Back in the saddle
I’m back after nearly a month on vacation and a lot has changed, a lot has stayed the same. Curious for your thoughts on the following topics and whatever else:
>> Starting today, July 1, all University of Hawaii men’s sports teams are named Rainbow Warriors. I think we’ll still call the football team Warriors and the baseball team Rainbows a lot. Basketball? Around 50-50, but trending toward Warriors.
>> Yasiel Puig was called up by the Dodgers and the Cuban right fielder exploded. He picked up where he left off in spring training and is hitting over .400 with power and speed. He also has size and has drawn comparisons to Bo Jackson for all-around athleticism. Puig’s arm is big-time, too.
But does he belong in the All-Star Game after just one month in the bigs?
>> Aaron Hernandez, one of the NFL’s best offensive players, is in a jail awaiting trial for murder. The former Patriots tight end has had a checkered past going back to his college career at Florida.
>> The favorites are getting knocked off early at Wimbledon.
>> The Pittsburgh Pirates look like they’ve finally gotten over the hump.
>> Making the cut an impossibility, Michelle Wie didn’t show up the next day to finish up her final hole of the second round after a rain delay in last week’s tourney. Does that make her a quitter? Depends how you define it, I guess. In my book, it makes her at the least disrespectful to her sport and fellow competitors.
>> Where’s Dwight Howard going to go? Where should he go? Is he worth all the money and attention, considering his high maintenance and poor free-throw shooting?
Welcome back, DR. What about the team trials at the Tour de France tomorrow? And the backdrop to the countryside is something to die for. We, the iron ok0le-type, should have top-billing once-in-a-while too.
I was wondering what happen to you? We need you to keep taps on UH sports. You are the person that tells it like it is Dave, keep us informed.
Hoping Michelle turns it around. I just wonder what happened? At 15, she was about to take the LPGA by storm, but fizzled by the time she was 19 and struggling. She’s given signs of turning it around, only to falter badly.
Some say it has to do with changing her swing to try to compete with the men when she was a teen. She also had some injuries that set her back, but seems healthy now. Confidence is a big part of golf, so there’s that, too.

Welcome back Dave. Hope you’re all right. Our friend saw you in Kuakini while he was having his colonosocopy. Apparently he really enjoyed the procedure, he just thought the doctor should of bought him dinner first.
Michelle Wie does NOT know the first thing about being a class player. Stinks of entitlement!!!
She should switch coaches and become humble but in her vocab probably missing.
Would like to see her succeed, but I think she’s missed the boat.
1. Like Rainbow Warriors…a) Honor the past, look toward the future, b) Consistent with women’s sports (Rainbow Wahine, Rainbow Warriors and c) unique to UH, lots of Warriors but only one Rainbow Warriors.
2. Let Yasiel Puig play in the All-Star Game. He is good for the game, the game needs a shot in the arm and fans want to see him.
3. Aaron Hernandez needed to separate himself from his past associates, but didn’t. That shows a lack of maturity and it’s going to cost him his freedom and his lifestyle. His family will have to pay the dearest, unfortunately.
4. Don’t pay too much attention to tennis but a little shakeup now and again is good for the game.
5. We’ll wait a little longer on the Pirates.
6. I think the coddling of Michelle Wie by her parents and her management has made her immature and it’s showing. I also think her father is still heavily involved in her career which doesn’t help. Have you seen her in a TV interview? Not good.
7. Don’t really care about Dwight Howard. He reminds me of Shaq in that he only cares about the entertainment. Hasn’t really worked to improve his game, doesn’t show a high degree of competitiveness, and he is high maintanence. I’m surprise that the Lakers have to resort to a form of begging to get him to stay.
I’m fine Manoa. But it is good that I had that procedure done. Peace of mind. Our friend and I agreed the post-game graham crackers tasted really good. Of course, after a full day of consuming little else other than Ala Wai Canal Juice a plate of dirt probably would’ve tasted good.
