Ultimate fan

There are ultimate fans and then there was Rodney Okai.

Okai was best known as the skinny Asian guy  hanging over the front-row rail and sharing his “opinion” of officiating at UH basketball games.

He was a season-ticket holder in football and men’s basketball, although it was never apparent why he was charged full price. He never sat during games.

He was a supervisor at Oceanic who carefully planned his vacations. He would take off during San Francisco 49er playoff runs and for certain UH basketball trips.

To know Rodney was to know not to get married or have a yakudoshi party on a football Saturday or any night the basketball team would  play.

He had become such a fixture at UH events, even before five basketball players were Fabulous, that he was entrusted to bring home the Rainbow Warriors’ 2001 WAC championship trophy. We’re not sure if he bought a plane ticket for the trophy.

His attendance at basketball games waned in recent years, mostly out of protest over the dismissal of Bob Nash as head coach. But he kept paying for his seats and, we hear, kept sharing his opinion on officiating.

Rodney recently passed away. The self-styled health advocate — he exercised regularly, took nutrients and didn’t eat dinners — was only 59.

He will be missed.

Even by the referees.

Our deepest sympathy to his wife and son.

My deepest sympathy to the Family of Rodney Okai. A UH Warrior Fan bar none will be missed!

The rain is making me Feel gloomy. Maybe a visit to a tanning booth is in order today?

  7. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2013 8:20 am

Recruiters should tell players interested in Oregon: “See this? This is your weather for the next five years. Hope Nike makes ponchos.”

  8. mo808 January 3, 2013 8:21 am

    😆

  9. jm2375 January 3, 2013 8:22 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

wafan – come get your rain.

Condolences to the family of Mr. Okai.

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!

  10. PolyMom January 3, 2013 8:24 am

ST can you send the info to Jesse Sapolu. He would be a nice guy and have a card sent. Oh heck…I’ll tell him on FB to come read the blog. Condolences to the family of a great 49er fan!

  11. Annoddah Dave January 3, 2013 8:26 am

ST: Where were his seats? Only rails I know are at both ends of the court. The sideline rails are not very secure for leaning over.

  12. tommui January 3, 2013 8:41 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I did not know Rodney Okai – but any dedicated fan of our Rainbows/Warriors will be sorely missed.

  13. kapakahi January 3, 2013 8:45 am

Sad to hear about Rodney. He will be missed.

The most passionate UH MBB fan that I’ve ever met…..a true and loyal supporter of both Riley and Nash…..and with the dooziest of stories to share.

  14. d1shima January 3, 2013 8:46 am

    Great Morning All!

Aloha to Mr. Okai’s Ohana. 🙁

  15. HawnMantis January 3, 2013 8:48 am

ST, Re: yesterday’s tag about Chow’s cultivation of Edwards. Chow’s demonstration of executive best practices of recognizing and developing leadership qualities in subordinates/players bodes well for the football program as Former UH Athletic mentioned. I found Edwards to be articulate and thoughtful in media soundbites and wish the best for his future NFL career.

  16. hank January 3, 2013 8:57 am

peace to brother Rodney and his ohana.

  17. MattyBoy January 3, 2013 9:01 am

My condolences to the Okai ohana.

  18. Dan-O January 3, 2013 9:14 am

True UH fans (all sports) never die…..they just move to BETTER seats.

  19. Bowwar January 3, 2013 9:14 am

Sorry to hear of Mr. Okai’s passing and my condolences to his family…The “hardcore” UH fans are starting to wane over the years as we get older. I just have to look around my section at UH football games and there are only a few still left from when I bought my season tickets in 1976…The young folks seem to be less inclined to sit in the seats and cheer our Warriors on, so losing fans like Okai are a big loss…

Note: I used to have UH BB season tickets until the Basketball scandal under Bruce O’Neil and subsequent sanctions killed my enthusiasm…I still attend occasional BB games…Actually, I’m excited about what Gib is doing, so maybe I may forego my football tickets and go back to BB. Another year of Chow and his “von Appen” style will kill me. 🙁

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid January 3, 2013 9:23 am

    Condolences to the Okai ‘ohana.

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid January 3, 2013 9:25 am

Best wishes to Mike Edwards and Cayman Shutter. May all your dreams come true!

  22. graham January 3, 2013 9:25 am

Very disappointed that Cayman never got his shot to play. That DWI really hurt them ecspecially with the terrible play of the QBS this year. Coming out of high school he reminded me a lot of Colt. I was very happy when he decided to come to UH. I wish him nothing but the best in Canada and hope he does well there. I would not be surprised if he did do well given he never started a game when he probably should ecspecially after the season was over and Schoder was brutal to watch. Higgins just does not have the arm strength to play D-1 football. You cannot defend either QB because they were truly hard to watch.

  23. Will-I-Am January 3, 2013 9:30 am

Wow. 56 and gone. Anyone know what happened?

for me, guys like that are a huge part of what makes a program successful. At the end of the day we are paying for an experience. Okai did his part of entertaining me over the years.

  24. graham January 3, 2013 9:30 am

    Is Chinedu Amadi transferring?

  25. Wes'side Warrior January 3, 2013 9:43 am

    Howzit, Gang!

Prayers and condolences for the Okai ‘ohana! I always wondered who that guy was, way back when…

And as Paul Harvey used to say…

And now, you have… the rest of the story!

Mahalo, ST, for answering a question I thought might never be answered!

    … Good day!

  26. A-House January 3, 2013 9:44 am

Deepest sympathy to Rodney Okai family.

I do not know or ever met him, but he uplifts my spirits to know that there are those who still represent the fans – I can picture in my mind of he holding the top rail with his left hand, waving his right hand in many different motions at the refs, players, coaches, etc.

Such enthusiasim and energy will be sorely missed.

  27. Leron January 3, 2013 9:52 am

#24 Amadi is going to Boise State

  28. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 9:54 am

#56 Brenden Dailey is not gone, he is still here 🙂

According to his Twitter account, Chinuedu Promise Amadi is transferring to Boise St.

But he best wait til after next week. Word is Chip Kelly is going to meet with multiple NFL teams after today’s Fiesta Bowl. If he goes, Boise’s Chris Petersen is on a short list of candidates to take over the Ducks. If Boise gets a new coach, he may not honor Amadi’s transfer request

  29. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 3, 2013 9:56 am

It appears Lance Reynolds, a 30+ year veteran coach at BYU who retired this year was offered the Offensive Coordinator position.

Here is an article on his career by Deseret News.

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865569419/Lance-Reynolds-retirement-ends-link-to-long-history-of-BYU-football.html?pg=all

Dick Harmon tweets that Reynolds is deciding on whether or not to take the job.

Not really sure how I feel about hiring him. BYU forums don’t have much praise for him while he was OC at BYU.

  30. gobows January 3, 2013 10:16 am

    Aloha Rodney O.

    #29 IWWTHM

Reynolds might be a slight upgrade from TLee. If anything he could help the O line.

  31. SteveM January 3, 2013 10:18 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Condolences to the Okai family.

Good luck to Edwards and Shutter at the next level!

  32. al January 3, 2013 10:26 am

my heartfelt sympathies to the okai family.

    Godspeed brother!

  33. (Jesse) James January 3, 2013 10:27 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

Hope all have a great day!!!

Condolences to the Okai ohana. 🙁 Didn’t know him but he sounds like a true UH fan….and he will be missed.

  34. Shoko January 3, 2013 10:28 am

Condolences to the Okai family and close friends. Although Mr. Okai passed away too early, living the healthy lifestyle is fighting the good fight. May he rest in peace.

  35. LizKauai January 3, 2013 10:29 am

Heavenly Consolation to the Okai Ohana.

God Bless and Godspeed to our Warriors who are moving on.

    Hi Ho and whoosh!

  36. al January 3, 2013 10:29 am

a lot of reynolds’ success came while coaching up the byu rb’s.

he could lend a lot experience to our otherwise youthful staff. then again he is still in his late 50’s isn’t he?

  37. Shoko January 3, 2013 10:32 am

Just out of curiosity, how much does the Warriors’ strength and conditioning coach get paid. I just read that Arkansas strength and conditioning coach makes 300k a year!

  38. al January 3, 2013 10:33 am

his versatility could allow for some shuffling within the ranks.

then, again we don’t know if he will be the next asst coach.

regardless, it is up to chow and whomever he chooses we should embrace.

  39. al January 3, 2013 10:34 am

remember, that football specific s/c coach will still fall under tommy h.

  40. Shoko January 3, 2013 10:39 am

If Tommy H. is the main guy, how much does he get paid. Can’t be anywhere near what Arkansas’ S&C coach, Ben Herbet, makes. I’m thinking the little over 100k?

  41. al January 3, 2013 10:40 am

at least one florida db will be walking the beach at waikiki tomw.

  42. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 10:44 am

Reynolds is an outstanding RB coach. If he comes here, I like our chance of landing Kahuku RB Aofaga Wiley, over BYU.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Reynolds coach the RB, Uperesa the Oline and Whisehan the WR.

Whisehan played WR and coached that position in the CFL and other stops prior.

  43. jm2375 January 3, 2013 10:45 am

Peanut butter and Spam sandwich? hmmm…

  44. Old School Dave January 3, 2013 10:50 am

#42: Recruiting running backs has not been a priority at UH since 1999. As you mentioned, Lance Reynolds has a proven track record at developing running backs at BYU. If UH can sign a couple of talented running backs (like the kid from Florida), along with Reynolds, along with improvement on the O-Line, chances are you will see Chow’s offense become more productive (and exciting).

  45. unkanesson January 3, 2013 10:56 am

Howzit SteveM and Tsaikos everywhere –

    Aloha Makahiki Hou!

Still lurkin’ after all these years…

Looking forward to success for all UH sports teams in 2013!

  46. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 10:59 am

Reynolds is also respected at the Utah HS’s that has high Polynesian enrollments.

  47. Gsky January 3, 2013 11:01 am

Condolences to Rodney. Way too young…

Amadi – Is this guy gonna make Chow regret letting him go? Interesting that he’s going to Boise. I don’t know why he wasn’t getting playing time, but make you go hmmmm.

Florida recruits – Fricken rain! Please go away so they can see how beautiful it is 95% of the time.

  48. Bigislandkurt January 3, 2013 11:10 am

Our greatest recruiting tool for these Florida guys is not our weather. They got good weather in Florida too. Our greatest assets are our current Florida players. They will make or break how these players feel about playing in Hawaii. Some of the most beautiful college women in world don’t necessarily hurt our chances either.

    BIK

  49. al January 3, 2013 11:11 am

i believe amadi is leaving by his own accord and also on his own dime as well, that he may land in boise.

  50. al January 3, 2013 11:16 am

then again the average humidity for tampa, fla is 87% during the day while honolulu’s average is 71% during the day.

  51. al January 3, 2013 11:17 am

we have geckos and they have alligators.

  52. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 11:19 am

BIK, Ne’Quan, Marrell, Grimes, Sampson all love Hawaii. Don’t know about Desmond Dean’s status

  53. d1shima January 3, 2013 11:22 am

    Rock, chalk, Jayhawk….

PIAADoris posts on FB that Colton Goeas commits to Kansas.

  54. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 11:23 am

Since Boise is back in the saddle again, how will Amadi’s transfer work since its a school within the conference.

    Gotta walkon for 2 years?

That’s something guys had to factor in when considering joining Rolo at Nevada last fall.

  55. al January 3, 2013 11:40 am

    desmond dean is a texan

  56. A-House January 3, 2013 11:51 am

ah, the recruiting war goes on and on and on with no end in sight – get some Tsaikos all worked up – plus or negative, don’t matter.

what is is, what will be will be

as Alfred E newman says, “what, me worry?”

  57. Warrior Dave January 3, 2013 11:52 am

Shouldn’t surprised me to hear additional transfers to other schools and opportunities, but it does. Oh well, good luck to them all

  58. A-House January 3, 2013 11:52 am

very slow day, which is good on the brain and my back, so I’ll trot on home!

DE/OLB Kalei Auelua (Saint Louis Class of 2012) who was Class of 2012 UW Huskie signee….but was being greyshirted…..now apparently available……

  61. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 12:19 pm

Desmond Dean ended up Texan but he was born in Frostproof, Florida. His pops played at Florida A&M.

To some he’s a Floridian, You know just like some Kanaks claim Barry is Kenyan, oops I mean Hawaiian born 🙂

  62. al January 3, 2013 12:23 pm

    check that…next friday.

  63. Old School Dave January 3, 2013 12:23 pm

From the Seattle Times— Dawgman.com reported last night that DL Kalei Auelua, who signed with the Huskies last February and then delayed enrollment, will not enroll at UW this month as planned. The site reported that Auelua had not been accepted into school and will not look at schools such as Boise State and UCLA.

  64. Will-I-Am January 3, 2013 12:29 pm

Florida recruit hosts should point to geckos and call them Hawaiian gators.

  65. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 12:34 pm

Others born but not raised in Florida includes WR Elijah Langley, OL Ben Dew

On the contrary, Ne’Quon Phillips was born in Wisconsin, but raised in Florida.

  66. Chicken Grease January 3, 2013 12:36 pm

R.I.P., Mr. Okai. That was a fan. Man, Too healthy not always too good, maybe 🙁 .

  67. Bowwar January 3, 2013 12:40 pm

If UH FB players get healthy and stay healthy this year, then maybe we might have a chance of winning 4 games.

  68. Bowwar January 3, 2013 12:50 pm

I wonder if there is an “Alex Green” type running back available at the JC ranks, as we could surely use another “quick” running back.

  69. 99club January 3, 2013 12:52 pm

    Rest in peace, Mr. Okai.

  70. al January 3, 2013 1:07 pm

will gregory reminds me of alex green.

  71. al January 3, 2013 1:09 pm

i think lakalaka will show up this year.

  72. gobows January 3, 2013 1:21 pm

#67 the 2013 edition of UH Warrior football get chance for win 13 games…but will probably only win 6

  73. PolyMom January 3, 2013 1:29 pm

    I love Lakalaka!

  74. kev-1 January 3, 2013 1:41 pm

I think Gregory has the potential to be better than Green. He seems quicker and shiftier.

  75. BigWave96744 January 3, 2013 1:44 pm

    “Boom” Lakalaka 🙂

  76. maddog50 January 3, 2013 1:58 pm

    4 games….you gotta be kiddin me—-Go Warrriors—-mor like 7 plus!

  77. jeezy33 January 3, 2013 1:59 pm

74? Shiftier??? Gregory in my opinion is a 1 cut north-south runner.

  78. kapakahi January 3, 2013 2:01 pm

    #77,

    Gotta agree with u.

  79. kapakahi January 3, 2013 2:18 pm

    #63,

Other than UW, UCLA, and Boise State, Auelua had scholie offers from Utah & Colorado (with Cabral – who is now “retiring”)…..and supposedly UH (under Mack).

  80. AllG January 3, 2013 2:30 pm

    #77

What do you think Alex Green was? He definitely wasn’t shifty…Gregory definitely has more shift than Green

  81. laulau head January 3, 2013 2:46 pm

Had the honor of meeting and working briefly with Rodney. We got along right away because of our passion for Warrior sports.

RIP Mr. Okai, thoughts and prayers to his ohana.

  82. d1shima January 3, 2013 2:52 pm

    Go Ducks!

  83. NotNasti January 3, 2013 2:55 pm

#80, There are plenty highlights of Alex Green faking guys out of their shoes, and then running right over them. His strength was/is a combination of strength, speed and great balance.

  84. al January 3, 2013 2:58 pm

i see many agree with my green = gregory analogy.

lister is similar, though less explosive but has more punch and soft hands.

lakalaka, yes, boom lakalaka, reminds me more of an ilaoa type runner. though, nasty nate is/was in a class by himself.

joey is the samoan bus in the mode of jerome bettis.

to say that a diocemy st. juste would fit in would be an understtement.

  85. jeezy33 January 3, 2013 3:24 pm

Hearing Hawaii close to getting commit from a Utah DE…. potential beast

  86. NotNasti January 3, 2013 3:28 pm

Many people forget how fast Alex Green was. He posted a 4.45 sec. 40 yd. dash time at the NFL combine. I think Wil Gregory looks faster when compared to our other backs, who are not fast.

  87. al January 3, 2013 3:36 pm

jeezyd…we’re close on some db’s as well.

  88. kev-1 January 3, 2013 3:38 pm

I wasn’t saying Green was slow. I still think Gregory is shifty. If you watch him before he hits his holes, he has very subtle, quick moves, then hits it.

NotNasti . . . that is a good point though, that Gregory looks faster when compared to our other backs.

  89. kev-1 January 3, 2013 3:39 pm

    #77 Jeezy . . . I don’t mean Barry Sanders shifty.

  90. jeezy33 January 3, 2013 3:43 pm

    87. I only want Thomas though. Don’t think we will get McCollum

  91. NotNasti January 3, 2013 3:46 pm

kev-1, You’re right. Gregory HAS the potential to be a very productive back. I know what you mean about his move right before he hits the hole. He has a sort of glide step and then “BAM” he hits it hard. The key next year will be the O-Line.

  92. al January 3, 2013 3:49 pm

so the qb will also be here.

  93. al January 3, 2013 3:50 pm

jeezy…its higdon who takes the same ride as thomas.

the big z will be here, too.

  94. Bryson January 3, 2013 3:51 pm

I think we land Higdon and Thomas from the Florida boys….looks like McCollum will be going wherever Coach Randy Shannon…

  95. Bryson January 3, 2013 3:52 pm

Thomas and Zwhalen are all ready communicating….about their visit dates….good signs

  96. wafan January 3, 2013 3:57 pm

    jm0809340932 . . .

Your rain is coming this way. Maybe we can build up a high pressure system in time to deflect some of it northward to BC or southward to CA.

    Nope. Not holding my breath.

  97. wafan January 3, 2013 3:59 pm

Looks like good things are in the works.

    Huzzah!

  98. Kaleo January 3, 2013 4:00 pm

Jeezy…..what DE you talking about?….the DB’s I know. Is it a guy already offered or is he another behind the scenes Etuale kinda guy?

  99. Kaimiloa January 3, 2013 4:00 pm

Are we still in the running for the RB?

  100. wafan January 3, 2013 4:01 pm

Thank you to jeezy33 and al et al (sorry, been wanting to do that one for some time) for the updates.

    I know I missed some — sorry!

  101. wafan January 3, 2013 4:02 pm

    100, too!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  102. wafan January 3, 2013 4:03 pm

    23 this morning.

    Sun came out.

    Temperature dropped to 20.

    Weird.

  103. gobows January 3, 2013 4:04 pm

its still raining in the valley

  104. wafan January 3, 2013 4:06 pm

Wigwam was also on Dillingham across the street from the elementary school, McD’s, and the now gone Jolly Roger. The Skyslide used to be there, too.

  105. wafan January 3, 2013 4:11 pm

Aloha to R. Okai. Condolences and positive thoughts for his family and friends.

Sounds like a real fan who was willing to invest his time and put his money where his mouth was — positively supporting the student-athletes.

I think he may have a bit more clout from where he is now.

  106. gobows January 3, 2013 4:32 pm

    so…

    wigwam in waipahu and kalihi

    gems in waipahu and kalihi

jolly roger in waipahu and kalihi

    skyslide in waipahu and kalihi

but kalihi nevah have goody goody drive inn, big way, tops, and arakawas.

  107. jeezy33 January 3, 2013 4:34 pm

    98. Been offered for a while. Just kind of under the radar. First year playing football I think.

  108. wafan January 3, 2013 4:38 pm

Gem was also across the street from the Ward Center next to the market. Used to go there to pick up some munchies before basketball games at the then HIC.

Been away too long — do not remember the names of the companies.

  109. wafan January 3, 2013 4:40 pm

    Nytal!

  110. Abunai January 3, 2013 4:41 pm

    Jeezy? Who’s the Utah DE?

  111. kapakahi January 3, 2013 4:45 pm

    #85 & #107,

Still kinda worried that about the Utah Ute connections on this one.

  112. MattyBoy January 3, 2013 4:51 pm

    Al,

How’s our chances with landing St. Juste?

  113. kapakahi January 3, 2013 5:05 pm

Wonder if JD is in town…..and will be at the Sheriff tonight…..to support his new team…..CSUF Titans in tonight’s MBB ball?

    Hmmm…..

  114. cocobean January 3, 2013 5:10 pm

    Aloha o’e Rodney Okai.

Never met the man but saw him at all the BB games. Would be nice if Keenan asks for a moment of silence before the the anthems are sung. Most in attendance will know who he is. The guy in the green jacket yelling at the refs from behind the home basket.

  115. Shoko January 3, 2013 5:16 pm

Once a Warrior, always a Warrior.

Should be one of the better conference games tonight.

  116. Brother: January 3, 2013 5:32 pm

Thanks Stephen for those kind words. I’m Rodney’s brother Cliff and “true” to every word said and some. Rodney passed on Christmas Eve 2012. And the funeral plans will be posted through you folks. I not just saying this because he’s my brother but of all 50 years of my life, Rodney was the most unselfish, kind, proactive person I’ve ever met. He was also predictable because he would always do the right thing.

  117. 99club January 3, 2013 5:32 pm

Still wishing for 16-team playoff for FBS. After this year’s BCS games one has to wonder: Would the Wisconsin head coach quit before the Rose Bowl if it was a playoff quarter/semi-final? Would anyone say “Florida didn’t want to be there” if the Sugar Bowl was a playoff? Would more people watch/attend the Orange Bowl (Florida St. vs. Northern Illinois, remember?) Finally, I’m not so sure we’d see both Notre Dame and Alabama in the championship game if there was a playoff. Stanford would have been a tough out, for one.

  118. d1shima January 3, 2013 5:50 pm

    Brother Cliff,

Very nice tribute to your brother. So sorry for your loss.

  119. gobows January 3, 2013 6:24 pm

    wahine loss 74-83

fullerton is going with a 5 guard line up…vander, standhardinger, and fotu should do well tonight

  120. gobows January 3, 2013 6:30 pm

clair gets the call at pg, brereton, vender, standhardinger, and fotu start.

  121. Shoko January 3, 2013 6:32 pm

Fotu off to a strong start.

  122. gobows January 3, 2013 6:34 pm

    fotu 10 pts

  123. 3-Prong January 3, 2013 6:42 pm

Sey so small, at this rate Fotu might get 4 2…hehe

  124. 3-Prong January 3, 2013 6:42 pm

Sey so small, at this rate Fotu might get 4 2…hehe

  125. 3-Prong January 3, 2013 6:44 pm

see what happens when you drink and text.

  126. Shoko January 3, 2013 6:52 pm

Geez, Fotu is a one-man show!

  127. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:02 pm

    Roooops?

  128. gobows January 3, 2013 7:03 pm

4 quick turnovers by clair…he’s the best UH got, it’s going to be a loooooong season for gib

  129. Chicken Grease January 3, 2013 7:07 pm

There’s some kind of “Oceanic Employee Channel” in the 900 range on the digital side. Last a Grease checked, wasn’t viewable by non-Oceanic employee customers, but, wonder if there’s a tribute to Okai there already or in the works?

  130. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:08 pm

Goes without saying, but Fotu is in beast mode.

  131. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:09 pm

Long Beach, Northridge and Irvine lost tonight. I dunno, but there doesn’t seem like a clear favorite to take the conference.

  132. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:11 pm

DJ Seeley is a deadly 3-point sniper.

  133. gobows January 3, 2013 7:12 pm

40-40 half time fotu has 20

  134. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:12 pm

Vander scoreless in the first half.

  135. gobows January 3, 2013 7:13 pm

10 of 12 all from under the basket for fotu

  136. 3-Prong January 3, 2013 7:16 pm

Let em keep shooting the 3’s. Law of average will catch up with them. But make em pay if they take it to the hoop. Plenty fouls to give. make em shoot the FT if anything, but No Free Layups!

  137. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:22 pm

DJ Seeley 3-point percentage is near 40%. Don’t want to give him to many good looks behind the arc. If the score is close, as its looking, they could easily steal the game at the last second.

  138. lakesidegt January 3, 2013 7:23 pm

Condolences to the Family of Rodney Okai. I had a chance to share some time with him watching UH football road games for several years. He was a good guy whose time came way too early. Great write-up Stephen.

I Wonder Why They Hate Me, don’t know if you had a chance to talk to him; but he was part of our group at the Moanalua Club House.

  139. Shoko January 3, 2013 7:25 pm

Why doesn’t OC16 online stream have commercials, instead of this dead air. Isn’t that one way to make money via advertising?

  140. gobows January 3, 2013 7:31 pm

    vander sucks

  141. gobows January 3, 2013 7:33 pm

vander should go out for football

  142. Slugger January 3, 2013 7:35 pm

    Condolences to Rodney Okai’s ‘ohana.

  143. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 3, 2013 7:36 pm

    OMG!!!!!!

I just realized that ST’s Rodney Ohai was referring to a friend of mine. Just got an email about his passing. Did not put 2 and 2 together.

We had our version of “TV-Gates” in which Rodney, another tsaiko, and a bunch of other mutual friends were a part of.

Sad to hear this…he was indeed one of the most passionate fans I have ever seen.

  144. gobows January 3, 2013 7:37 pm

fotu 12-14 from the field rest of team 9-27

  145. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 3, 2013 7:39 pm

    # 143 damnit (sp) Okai*….rattled a bit

  146. gobows January 3, 2013 7:50 pm

18 turnovers in 30 minutes for UH

  147. gobows January 3, 2013 7:54 pm

why is manroop clair on the team

  148. Shoko January 3, 2013 8:00 pm

Backcourt is the Warriors archilles heel this season. Miss Miah and Zane.

By the way, is Zane still playing for the Fukuoka Rizen in the Japanese league?

  149. Rodney January 3, 2013 8:06 pm

    Dribble penetration !!!!!!!!!!!

  150. Shoko January 3, 2013 8:16 pm

    Oh man, very good game!

  151. Chicken Grease January 3, 2013 8:16 pm

    Hahahahah, # 149, Rodney!!!!

  152. Chicken Grease January 3, 2013 8:20 pm

Anybody know if they did a “moment of silence” for Okai ‘fore the game tonight? Might’ve been a nice touch if the lights were turned down and a spotlight beaming on where he sit, er, or stood, rather, for the duration of the moment.

There’s always next game — some of youse got clout to arrange this, yes?

  153. Shoko January 3, 2013 8:24 pm

    YESSS!!!!!!

  154. mo808 January 3, 2013 8:25 pm

That was a great finish MBB Warriors!

  155. Shoko January 3, 2013 8:25 pm

Great, now I’m too amped to go schleep now!!

    Man, outstanding!!

  156. gobows January 3, 2013 8:25 pm

  157. Gsky January 3, 2013 8:26 pm

    A little magic in manoa…

  158. Chicken Grease January 3, 2013 8:32 pm

Unreal, unreal. Okai had a hand in that! 🙂

  159. d1shima January 3, 2013 8:32 pm

    Nice job MBB! 🙂

I’m sure Mr Okai was guiding that last shot!

  160. Chicken Grease January 3, 2013 8:36 pm

Heh, we say almost same thing at almost the same timen d1shima (a Grease before you 😉 heh.)

Good decisions by Gibb tonight. Shoji should take some tips.

  161. kapakahi January 3, 2013 8:48 pm

    Happy for Garrett!

Great game! Great shot! Great win!

  162. cocobean January 3, 2013 9:10 pm

No moment of silence for Mr. Okai. My friends corrected me. Rodney always wore a black jacket to the games. No one I know knew his name but all remembered who he was.

Points off of turn overs was disappointing. Other than that very entertaining game.

  163. kev-1 January 3, 2013 9:16 pm

Congrats to the bball warriors tonight. Also, congrats to island boy Marcus Mariota for a great performance tonight and being awarded the Fiesta Bowl MVP. I hope Chip Kelly decides to stay in Oregon so he can continue to work his magic with the young, former Crusader.

  164. niho mano January 3, 2013 9:20 pm

Great MBB game…exciting win…my wife just laugh as she watch me yell…..YEEESSS!!!

  165. dannyp January 3, 2013 9:28 pm

Do we have a legit shot at WR Keith Kirkwood? He’s visiting Jan 12. 6’4 and an another Florida guy would be a big get imo.

  166. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 3, 2013 9:45 pm

Coach Chow…Get at least 8 of the Star Advertisers Top 10 high school FB players.

Rodney would love that. I remember him saying how important that could be.

  167. kapakahi January 3, 2013 9:53 pm

    #165,

Other than geographic issues, would seem like Warriors have a legit shot at Kirkwood…..since somewhat under the radar recruiting-wise…..since playing making transition from playing Bball to Fball.

  168. teethkanaka January 3, 2013 10:00 pm

    Thanks Stephen,

Thank you for that wonderful piece about my friend Rodney Okai. He was an intense guy, a great person, a generous human being, and the greatest UH fan ever for football and especially basketball!!!

Also the greatest Laker fan in Hawaii!!!

Who else could talk me into a buying courtside seats with him at the SSC to watch the Lakers play a preseason game at $250 a pop. Thank god it was only one of those games.

UH basketball will not be the same without him. So will UH football. I walked the sidelines with him on passes he got or we bid on at the pigskin pigout on on at least on a half dozen occasions.

I had to coax him out of his room in New Orleans to see the New Years Eve fireworks on the Mississippi. Had to go to his hotel and escort he and his son there. Front row seats to see the Sugar Bowl New Years Eve fireworks.

I could go on and on but before I weep somemore I need to stop.

To my friend Rodney……you may be better off now, but we will still miss you my friend. I know you will watch over Joan and Steven and the rest of your family.

    God Bless my great friend…….

  169. dannyp January 3, 2013 10:28 pm

#167 We should give him the Ostrowski deal and let him play both. I think it would put us over the top in acquiring his services.

  170. tom-warriornation January 4, 2013 1:22 am

My deepest sympathy to the Family of Rodney Okai. We need to have 50,000 Rodneys at every UH Warrior football home game!
