Steele shows mettle
Quarterback Steele Jantz participated in his first offseason passing drills yesterday afternoon, impressing UH teammates with his arm strength.
Jantz, who is 6 feet 3 and 208 pounds, is a graduate of Nevada Union High in California. He missed all but three games of the 2007 season after suffering a broken leg.
Before attending Nevada Union, he was a student at Crespi High.

Give credit to Jim Donovan and Scott Chan for an agreement to turn over 1,000 Aloha Stadium parking stalls to UH. (Although announcing the plan during Calf Call was, well, uncalled for.) It is estimated UH can earn $100,000 by selling those stalls.
Still, I like Robert Kekaula’s plan better.
Aloha Stadium currently gets to keep all of the revenue from parking. The stadium charge is $5 per car, and there are an estimated 8,000 stalls. For seven home games, the stadium would earn $280,000.
Kekaula’s suggestion is to double the parking charge to $10 per car, with UH getting the additional $5 per auto.
Under his plan, UH gets $280,000 for the seven home games, revenue it wouldn’t have received in the past. Aloha Stadium keeps those 1,000 stalls and maintains its $280,000 revenue. And there is no change to the fans, except paying more for parking. But even at $10, that’s a bargain compared to other prime parking spots for Mainland events.

I met Repetti several years ago, when I was covering UH basketball. Great guy.
Too bad Frazier blew it with the Boyd Group. If they ponied up the millions they were thinking of giving, then Cooke (I mean, Ching) Field would be quite the complex.
Actually, I met more people when I was covering basketball. That’s because we could hang out with the team more on the road. In football, it’s hanging out in the lobby as the players exit 1 a.m. meetings.
ST, how did frazier blow it? And is it too late to re-visit that opportunity now?
This was due to Riley acknowledging the Boyd group in public for all they did for the basketball team and UH sports in general. JJ and HF didn’t do that at all.

Just saw KHNL’s report on the new Word of Life football team that is starting up under Joe Onosai. Pretty awesome work that Brother Joe is doing. Bet he wishes he had Brashton and Tipoti, though.
The problem with the previous administration is that they never started any events. Everything was a carryover from somebody else’s work; then they’d show up, smile for the cameras, and slip to their table in the corner.
JJ was so fed up he got into the fund-raising business, which is how his foundation ended up funneling all of that money to Na Koa the past year.
My niece, a Word of Life graduate, was surprised Tipoti didn’t go to UH. Tipoti and Onosai’s daughter are dating. She’s at UH.
ST, thanks for the info. Herman was always more concerned about his image than with actually getting things done. Rather than acknowledge there was a problem and getting help, he chose to BS his way because he was afraid of looking stoopid. Early Good Morning Everyone.
These past ten days have not been that great. If something could go wrong, it did.
First, the blown motor in the washer which cost us $$$ to fix plus we got to eat a $50 deposit from the first Repair Guy who never came back to do the actual repair work. We priced new washers, but there’s no way given what happened a few days later that we could pay for one anytime soon. Perhaps in a couple of years.
Sometime last Sunday morning, our 1988 Toyota was vandalized – along with several other cars – in a hotel parking lot. No insurance coverage, but we still had to come up with a huge chunk of change to get everything replaced.
That happened within 24 hours of receiving the letter about the loss of funding – and my day job. Job-hunting is always a pain, but a real challenge for older folks. Hopefully, I’ll have another 25 -30 years of usable shelf life left until I die.
Then on Tuesday, our e-mail/website hosting service went into a major meltdown causing all sorts of chaos which we’re still trying to straighten out. We have five business websites plus our personal e-mail addresses so free hosting services are not an option .Thus when things go wrong, they go wrong bigtime. We’ll be getting a credit on our next bill, however.
That was followed on Wednesday evening with our dog breaking his 50′ cable, pushing through a 6′ high redwood gate, and nipping a kid walking by with his parents at 8:30 pm. We’d gone shopping at Windward Mall and were away from the house for slightly over two hours. Now we’re facing criminal charges as owners of a Dangerous Dog. Ironic given that we’re the ones who got the law passed over a period of 1,199 days from November,1998, through September, 2001
And now I’m coming down with a really nasty summer cold.
Anyhow, when I checked e-mail around 11 pm, the missing ones from Thursday night and Friday morning finally downloaded containing information about the Calf Call. The latter one was time-stamped about 40 minutes ahead of the one sent last night. As soon as I get my voice back, I’m going to call ValueWeb to get their take on what happened. Maybe we have to replace the e-mail program itself.
It’s bad enough that there are no live sports in town, all the tv shows are on summer break or showing re-runs. Guess it’ll be going to the movies & reading books & upgrading the bridge skills for the next couple of months.
Hope everyone had a good time at Friday’s lunch and hope that all of you have a good time later today at Nancy’s. I’ve got to take the car in to the last of the repairs and am getting a ride out to Mililani for the meeting and then will be dropped off at the repair shop afterwards.

If so, did anyone manage to download any songs by the winner, David Cook? I am disappointed that I’m not able to find much of anything download-able at this point. His independent albums have been taken off sales from Amazon, etc., and only his single release remains on iTunes. I understand that during the “Idol” season, the contestants’ weekly songs could be found regularly on iTunes, but I didn’t start watching until the last couple weeks. Anyone can help?

Speaking of hospitals. I went to a graduation ceremony last night, and the speaker was my middle kid’s former P.E. teacher. She had an undetected lifelong ailment. Anyway, a drop of blood went into her spine, causing an inflammation that led to nerve damage. Now she’s in a wheelchair. She’s only about 26, I think. She can’t walk, but that doesn’t stop her from competing in triathlons, using special equipment or her wheelchair.

Isn’t that done by Wimbledon (and actually, when you think about it, a lot of these ‘things’ are a reflection of viewing women as the weaker sex- now if we are gonna talk about physical strength, I am gonna be the first to admit that most women do not have the same physical strength as men…but I don’t think that is what we are talking about…I think what we are talking about are attitudes and sometimes stereotypes)
If we had always offered the same opportunities to women that have been offered to men, there would be acknowledgment that the pie is only so big, and that it has to be fairly (whatever is decided is ‘fairly’) distributed- it would not be viewed as women’s equal participation taking away from men’s equal participation-
Just as it is not now currently viewed as men’s particpation taking away from women’s participation…but rather, the fact that the pie is only so big and fair and equal distribution will mean some get funding and some don’t…

Aloha stadium parking? I just paid $10 in a parking structure across from Chase Field in downtown PHX for a D-Backs game. Went up from $8 two yrs. ago. Robert’s plan would work. I’m planning on taking Da Bus when I go. Do they still run that shuttle from Murphy’s?

I think we can all agree that Title IX is a fair and just law that assures opportunities for a gender that has been historically denied.
The only problem is that football, with 85 scholarships and 115-player rosters, creates an imbalance. There isn’t a women’s sports program that has that big a roster or offers that many scholarships. That’s why there are so few men’s programs at UH.
If football were taken out of the equation, then there could be more balance in the scholarships between men and women.
Or, as Bob Wagner once suggested: Make football a co-ed sport.
Seriously, though, as a father of two daughters, I’m glad females are now growing up in a time when they have an equal opportunity to participate in sports. And (cross-promotion plug) that was the point of Kate Robinson’s excellent journal entry yesterday, which was published in the online version of your favorite newspaper.

Because of change in my schedule, I wasn’t able to check out any of the theme parks in Orlando other than going to Epcot Center at night for a hosted event.
Judging by just that experience I can see why some people come away with a feeling about Disneyworld that “it’s the same as Disneyland, except you gotta WALK more”. The place was HUGE!
Bottom line Stephen, don’t expect to “see it all” in your extra time.

Orlando’s Disneyworld is Large Tsaiko-sized. Takes a whole day to enjoy it. I went to a conference when we had the entire place after-hours to go to all the attractions, & food stations (catered) were located in each “land”. I think RK’s plan sound good; however, I think JD needs to take care of the big boosters. Parking is a hassle so if you’re willing to pay enough through Koa Anuenue, then they will give you guaranteed parking.
Maybe a combination of of JD’s plan and RK’s plan can be worked out. Bottom line is there will be fewer stalls at the cheaper price.
Wonder how much most preschools charge now. When my kids were attending back in the 1980s, tuition was $150/month.
Now, daughter says babysitters charge $700-800 so I guess preschools probably charge as much.

I’m sure that Murph will continue to provide the shuttle this season. The bus leaves at 5 p.m. and it was $5 a head last year. He may have to increase the price this year. The disadvantage is there’s no time to tailgate with the Tsai-kos. Another option would be to try and catch a ride with a Tsai-ko in your district . If you live in the Makiki area and don’t mind going early to tailgate we would be happy to give you a ride.

Project Grad used to go to a hotel ballroom – and perhaps other schools still do. Ours starts with registration in the cafeteria after the ceremony and gathering with friends and family. The grads check in with a parent or guardian and are given a special tee shirt. They pack their extra clothes, towel, yearbook, jacket in a special sports bag which they get to keep. We put a laminated luggage tag on the bag (check the contents for contraband – no phones, hats, electronics or other real contraband stuff) and hold all the bags for transport to the proper location.
The grads change into their shirts and hand the parent everything else and are patted down by police officers before entering a secure area of the cafeteria where they enjoy pizza and wait for their fellow students.
Then they go to school buses which take them and their chaperones to the next location – in this case, a ride around the town, then back to the gym for entertainment (hypnotist, etc.).
Then back to the uses for a ride to a restaurant for late supper (this time on the Base), then to another location (between the Base and Waimea) where a mini carnival has been set up – water slide, food booths, massage and hairstyling booths, live band and a dance- and , of course, a tent with cots for crashing. This goes on til 7AM when the buses bring everyone back to school for parental pickup.
It’s a huge undertaking for a little community – but we all work together.
Last year, it was open to all the seniors- grad or not. This year, I don’t know what happened. But we got a new principal and I know a lot of kids did not grad. More kids graduated but were not allowed to walk because of absences or other “infractions”.
To me, Project Grad needs to be all-inclusive and ESPECIALLY for the latter groups – to keep them safe and together. It helped my #2 last year – who got his GED in the summer after.
Actually, don’t the top Koa Anuenue members already get favored parking? I think the new parking arrangements just extends the program to a wider circle by allowing others to pay extra for the better parking.
How about a compromise?
Sell the 1,000 seats to UH boosters.
Then raise the price of the other stalls to $10. To compensate for the loss of the 1,000 seats, give Aloha $6 per.
So, it would go like this (based on seven home games): UH’s take would be $296,000 ($100,000 from the 1,000 stalls, $196,000 from the other 7,000 stalls).
Aloha Stadium would receive $294,000 (7,000 stalls x $6 x 7 home games).

I believe the fans with full Koa Anuenue membership are already getting “free” parking so there are probably fewer than the 8000 stalls available for sale. This new agreement just cuts that down even further.
Garret pointed out a long time ago that UH could raise additional revenue by increasing $5 parking price. Maybe that’s JD’s and Aloha Stadium’s next step?

At UH, the athletic department doesn’t get parking revenue, even when it is clear that a game at the Stan Sheriff Center or Murakami Stadium is the only event on campus.
That’s because the parking moolah goes to pay off the bond that paid for the construction of the parking structure.
He was a pretty cruel.
After his mother died, he told his brother to have the least expensive funeral. He requested that his his mother’s death not be announced. He ultimately did not attend his mother’s funeral.

lizk best part of grad nite for PC anyway is the ending at the last site where a previous grads mom speaks to them. she talks of missing her son because of drinking after graduation and not heeding the warning. not a dry eye in the house. all the kids agree to be safer..it seem to work because there has been less incidents since then. I am talking 10 years now.

Re- Aloha Stadium, parking and revenue sharing… As long as the parties are thinking win-win and not being greedy, something will work out that is fair and equitable and attractive to the fans.
Re Title IX – While it may be some time before women’s sports in general (including pros) have the mass appeal and revenue potential of, say, football, the world will be a better place when that happens.
The LPGA is making great strides (imho) – especially when golf was considered a sport for only men until a few decades ago.
The world needs educated, evolved women.

I thought selling a parking permit at 75 which would allow you to park in the lower, and if popular, upper lots starting at noon, would have been a better Idea.
1. The stadium still charges the 5.00, so they still get their revenue.
2. 75.00 for the 7 home games is not that outrageous, so us low-income, die hard fans wouldn’t balk immediately at it. Its affordable.
3. It prevents major traffice back-ups at the 2:30 gate opening times.
With the current plan, can you imagine what traffic is going to be like at gates 1,2 and 5 when parking does open up now? And because of the location of gate 5, those waiting to get into the Kam lot are going to be blocking the access to gate 3, those looking to get into gate 2 will block salt lake blvd. Kahuapaani (is that the cross street) will be blocked as well, at least till the lots are full.
I can appreciate JD’s fund raising efforts, and if people are willing/can afford to pay an additional 400 for parking at 7 games, God bless em. I cannot afford to though, and am unwilling now to go try compete with 20K other fans for the remaining spaces.
In regard to Jantz, was he heavily recruited by UH? I don’t remember any mention of him previously. It would take real chutzpah to try to compete with that QB log-jam. If he’s coming to compete at safety, the team seems to have a lot of depth there also. What made him come out here rather than stay on the West Coast?

Methinks he should gray-shirt and enroll in Spring ’09.
That way, his 5-year college clock starts in ’09, rather than ’08.

Even though it may appear that way, we don’t have a disagreement about title 9. I personally think it is absolutely great, having had a daughter and now a granddaughter playing 3 or 4 sports. Football with its 85 scholarships just skewers the data somewhat, that’s all, see the Tsai-Meisters comment above.
As far as my statement about Wimledon, that has nothing to do with title 9, that’s the category of equal pay for equal work and has nothing to do with gender or weaker or stronger sex. For years womens groups lobbied for equal price money with the men, but they balked about playing the same five set matches. That’s my only beef, it still would be men against men and women against women, they only would have to work equally hard for their price money.
ST- thanks for the comments re: Title IX- as wafan would say, “Ah…the sound of common sense…” (Aloha wafan; LizK- thanks for the shout-out from him! I promise to get something in the mail to you- the catch up from the extended trip has just been crazy and on-going- almost like there’s no end in sight and gotta go back in three weeks- sheesh!). I have both a male ‘child’ (26) and a female child (23) and I expected them to have the same opportunities and expected them to have the same responsibilities- no boy or girl chores around here- they were just chores and needed to be done as part of a ‘functional’ family with all contributing age-appropriate equally…that last part can be an analogy for men’s and women’s sports, too…
But…(and we can agree to disagree)…we cannot (and, imho should not) always use football as the measuring stick…otherwise, to do so, continues the ‘argument’ of : “…to provide equally to women is to take away from men…” That is not the issue; that is not the rationale behind the Legislation…how long has football been around? Compare that to many women’s sports…take a look at what Julie Foudy (formerly of the Nat’l Women’s Soccer Team, which, among many other accomplishments, won the historic game against China in the Women’s World Cup) has to say on the issue- same with Billie Jean King- same with …I could go on and on, but don’t want to ruffle feathers…

ST – are you planning to go to DisneyWorld after the game? Check the website for the hours. I think they go off extended hours sometime mid to late August. Animal Kingdom always closes around 6, so don’t waste your money there. I would recommend either Epcot or MGM Studios (or whatever they’re calling it these days). Epcot is huge and IMHO MGM has better rides (I love roller coasters). Magic Kingdom is pretty much, but not exactly, the same as Disneyland, just bigger (more walking).
Other places to consider for all you guys going up there – Kennedy Space Center, Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure. Islands has some awesome rollercoasters. Oh yeah, and Busch Gardens in Tampa. Free beer (in limited quantities) with the most awesome rollercoaster – Sheikra.
Wish I was going, but saving my vacation days for next summer.

Namakakehau…sorry to hear about your son’s friend. I used to have a house full of teen boys hanging out, sleeping over, making fried rice burritos for breakfast (ramen burritos were the strangest.) It helps to have a place for them to hang that’s safe & supportive. The grad night programs are great to keep them safe during the celebrations. We had 4 teens killed in NoAZ, in one car, due to drinking & speeding (not on grad nite) last year. Breaks you heart.
myki1, I hope to have a place to live in McCully-Mo’ili’ili when I move home. I’ll have to figure out how to get around without driving a lot (one reason I want to move home.) There are a zillion busses that pass through Moiliili/McCully area. I know because I have to run between grocery stores daily as part of my job. I gave up driving because of the cost, and with the 40.00 bus pass, I have no problems getting to the stores, unless I have to lug around boxes of stuff.
FL Ted- your point, re: equal pay, is well taken, but that is also why there are still efforts re: reaching equal pay and there is still an Equal Pay ‘event’ across the nation, annually, to bring attention to the matter…Every state in the nation has a Commission on the Status of Women and they often champion this cause (among others) because, on average, women make 75 cents for every dollar earned by a male…at the same job, with the same qualifications as the male.
In Hawai’i, because we are an island state, there is the overall Commission on the Status of Women, made up of island representation, and there are also Committees on the Status of Women on each island. Some people have suggested that there should be a Commission and / or Committee on the Status of Men. I have no problem with that, but personally don’t see the need. I just want to continue to champion equity…especially for girls and sports because I think that girls deserve to have the same benefits of sport participation that boys have…and, yes, I think we agree on more than we disagree.
Perhaps Wimbledon’s winner’s pay is not a good example because of the difference in sets played, but, again, who decides that? Wimbledon is steeped in tradition and very slow to change anything…especially when it comes to women as women had more rules than men re: appropriate attire forever…so I am not at all convinced that it was women balking about the number of sets as opposed to Wimbledon deciding on the number of sets (and, frankly, that decision was probably based on the notion of women being the weaker sex and that they couldn’t handle more sets) and, yes, I do think this all ties in to Title IX.

My daughter was gonna start a POI Club- (People of the Islands) while in school in Santa Barbara, but wanted to limit to ‘only’ people from the islands…told her I didn’t think the school would support that…kind of unconstitutional if at a publicly supported college….and was that really showing the aloha spirit, which would be a good purpose for the club in addition to addressing people’s homesickness, etc.? She didn’t care! ‘Auwe…they come from you, but they do not always embrace what you have tried to teach them…but one keeps hoping…
Living in Florida now, there is still one weird problem I’m trying to get used to. In Hawaii, when somebody says “it’s right down the street” they mean 100 to 300 yards. In Florida, when somebody says the same thing, they mean 5 to 7 miles, lol. I also always think I’ve overshot my destination on these endless roads everywhere, when in reality I’m not even close. In Hawaii a trip to the North Shore is a ‘trip’, here it would barely be considered a jaunt. I drive 15 minutes to Clearwater Beach, to people here that means I live “next” to the beach, lol.
rabidfan, I know about the bus routes cuz I grew up in McCully, right on So. King St. That’s why I’m planning on moving back to that area. I used to catch the bus to go work at the cannery in the summer, go to Hanauma Bay by bus, but walked to Ala Moana to go to the beach. Even tho it only takes me 15 mins. to drive to work here, I’m still driving & putting out emissions. I was happy to see Hawaii on the top of the “green” cities list.

I Believe, I’m the co-advisor for the Hapa club on campus. I’ll look for your em addr in the contacts I have from other Tsaiko em’s. Or, go to the nau.edu home page, navigate to the clubs under Student Life & you’ll find my work em. Our club is called HAPA Hawaiian for a reason. When my son started at UoOregon, he wanted to join the Hawaiian club & hang with them so he’d have someone to play ‘ukulele with. But since he was not born in HI, they were really cliche-ish & didn’t make him feel welcome. So, when I started this club with a haole student who had gone to St. Andrews Priory, but not born in HI, we made sure that the club was open to anyone who appreciated the cultures of HI & the Pacific Rim, but you didn’t have to be from HI. We have had Native American students & others hanging with the club & involved in our activities, even doing the SPAM competition. It’s partly to educate others about HI & the culture, as well as giving the HI students support since they are so far away from home. And, I’m sure, being a state institution, you really can’t exclude people from organizations.
Great community effort by 70 volunteers from Hawaii 3R’s to paint Roosevelt High School’s bleachers and kudos to MShiroma Construction for their part in assisting the volunteers.

Again, I don’t think we are in disagreement on anything, really, maybe a few shades of opinion, which only makes it more interesting. I mentioned Wimbledon because that’s my only beef, if one can actually call it that. In most professional sports, men vs women, the market dictates the pay, i.e. golf, WNBA etc. and thus is not really subject to debate.
In the corporate world on the other hand, I’m 100% for equal pay and I’m well aware of still existing inequities. My daughter works for Navy Civil Service as contract specialist, no worries about equal pay there. It strictly goes by pay grade. They are light years ahead of the private sector. The Military always was somewhat of a trail blazer as far as gender and race integration is concerned.
Regardless, I’m enjoying our little discussion.

Fl Ted- last comment as gotta get some chores done- more nowadays as less people doing them since the ‘children’ are gone (even tho they keep moving home)….appreciate your enjoyment of the ‘discussion’ as opposed to getting nuha because of a difference of opinions…but…re: pay for women’s professional sports…that, too, is an issue which should be looked at more…’argument’ is that the pay is dictated by the market…but not really when you think the purses often come from corp sponsors…irrespective of how many tickets to view in person purchased…and then again, it goes back to how long men’s sports have been around and how many more years they have had to develop a following, which then brings in MORE corp sponsors, etc…it’s kind of a vicious cycle…and then when there is the formation of a women’s pro sport…like soccer…they are under the microscope and blamed for everything that goes wrong and there is the quick-to-arrive-at judgment that women’s sports are just not popular when they don’t have sell-out crowds (yet we know that Aloha Stadium- even for football- is rarely sold out) ….and are never gonna bring in the money of…say…football…
…but that’s comparing apples to oranges…witness, though, the women’s softball (college) tourny from yesterday- sold out crowd! YEEHAW! But, how long did that take? It takes time…time that some people are not willing to give because they expect to see instant success; instant money-making and…they want to continue to use football and what revenue it generates as the measuring stick!

Mei Ling- thanks- and good for you for starting club for reasons which you did- and I will try to ‘shame’ my daughter by telling her this! I think she was just ‘over’ some of the attitudes she was getting from mainland people- which ironically she found to be appearing to be prejudicial- yet, she could not see, at that time, that what she was proposing could be viewed same way…ah, youth…she is 23 now and I hope she feels differently…hope springs eternal…but, bottom line is that my new mantra is that they are adults and I am no longer responsible for their attitudes, beliefs, choice of dress, language, body decoration, etc….
To add on the Boyd Gaming donation that fell through…
Despite the deal to donate millions to fix up Cooke field, the Boyd Gaming corporation still donates a ton of money to the University. They will be title sponsor for the home opener against Weber State. During the Sugar Bowl Vacations-Hawaii sold packages and had probably one of the best Tailgate Parties sponsored by Boyd Gaming. Even though it may have seemed like it was only for those who purchased packages, they did not turn any Hawaii fan away. IT was free for any Hawaii fan. In addition, there was enough food at this party and Coach Riley was welcoming all of the fans coming through the front door and put beads on them.
When it came to game tickets. The block that Vacations-Hawaii received WAS NOT ONLY IN THE UPPER DECK BUT IN THE GEORGIA SECTION AS WELL. This pissed off the management at Vacations-Hawaii and word got to the higher ups at Boyd Gaming and a phone call and visit from representatives of Boyd Gaming to the Athletic Department and next thing you know the Boyd Gaming block of tickets was right between the 35-50 yard line lower level. Boyd Gaming was seriously considering pulling sponsorship to UH for this.
Riley Wallace needs to be taken care of. He works for Boyd Gaming now and he deals with a lot of people who drop a large dime at the Boyd casinos, in turn they are more than likely on the UH Bandwagon. Riley’s influence and position being a host provides as a great bridge for more people with deep pockets to donate to the university.

Last comment on the subject, again I don’t see disagreement. You are right, the patience factor is always a problem, but as long as God Mammon rules the corporate world, patience and education and trying and trying is all we have.
I sure hope UH is treating Riley Wallace with the proper respect from now on, unlike you know who. He could become a huge player for us. He’s highly intelligent, well connected and all he ever wanted was respect.
Donating back to the UH is a good thing. And writing as cryptic as I can as not to signal out those that don’t. Because that’s not my intention. With donations being tax write offs, I’m puzzled at how some in good conscience show such disenfranchisement towards their former school. I mean throw them a bone, show some respect, class and appreciation to the ones that supported you and paid for your room and board…10k,20k and 50k is really nothing for those that we have read signing multi million dollar contracts over the off season. C’mon payback the scholie at least…add some bling, too.
On the plus side look at how much better you would feel about yourself. By donating it opens up your heart. And frees your mind of people thinking why you haven’t been benevolent. Maybe the food will taste better. Sleep will be a lot easy. And the weight on your shoulders will be lighter. What’s important is that people, fans and your former school will look at your in a favorable light.
I’m telling you to take that ride out here and bring a couple of suitcases of cash. It not so much of this writer is begging on behalf of the UH, I just think that when you take this journey in life showing as much afforded goodwill on to others is good thing…and it reflects highly of you as a person. And your family.
Vicariously, most of us only can dream what it’s like to be in positions to bring smiles onto others on such a big scale, like how we saw the Ching family donating. And the impression I feel is that they’re genuinely happy to make others happy. Maybe you will, too. And if money can’t buy happiness wouldn’t donating back to the UH spark the happiness in you? And conversely by being ignoring of your former school, wouldn’t you be planting seeds of malevolence in your mind?
And the old adage of how doing good onto others brings back goodness to you ten fold is something to think about.

your: #156, bout what people mean and say where you live now and what people mean and say in Hawaii; When I 1st moved to Texas from Hawaii-via-California, I got into a discussion with a resident here and she started talkin and then uttered the common term used in these parts which I only heard watching westerns, and I thought it was used to express how people in these parts spoke in by gone years…..anyways, she used the term, “you reckon,” and I had to take a double take on that, and asked what she said, and she repeated herself, and sure as shootin, I bust out laughing cause it seemed so unsual to hear that term, coming from Hawaii.

Did anyone catch the Colt Brennan interview on the Sports Animals show yesterday? I missed it. I did catch a little of their Davone Bess interview though. Sounds like Davone is doing well, but he says he’d like to do better. He said that the “reason” for the lack of “conditioning” at the start of mini-camp (as reported by Sparano) was a combination of all the rookies being thrown into full-on drills or whatever from the start, along with there being no vets at camp so that he had to take extra reps. Davone also said that it was hard adjusting to other QBs (though it sounds like he’s still catching everything like always).
Wouldn’t it be great if one day, Brennan and any of the Fab Four receivers were on the same NFL team…
Ok. His name is Steele Gantz. (And we liked Colt Brennan for a name.) He looks like an athlete. Please keep us updated, Mr. Tsai. Imagine a play in a future Warrior game, “Steele Gantz to Jasper Jett for the 75 yard TD pass.” Those names, hard to beat I tell ya.

If you believe that the stadium authority will not increase the parking fees to make up the loss of the 1,000 parking stalls to UH, you are being naive. Donovan’s plan is better because those season ticket holders who can afford to pay the premium prices for football tickets, they would be willing to pay an additional $100 for a premium parkiing. This way, more premium tickets will be sold.

So, it would go like this (based on seven home games): UH’s take would be $296,000 ($100,000 from the 1,000 stalls, $196,000 from the other 7,000 stalls).
Aloha Stadium would receive $294,000 (7,000 stalls x $6 x 7 home games).

Returning to Title IX: Shouldn’t the issue be phrased as working towards increasing scholarships & other forms of financial aid rather than just shifting them around.
Incidentally, Hawai`i should be proud of its progress in meeting Title IX goals compared to other public & private colleges & universities. Remember the intense discussion a few months back about Carl Clapp’s time at St Mary’s?
One of the interesting facts dug up in trying to get the complete picture of what happened before & during his tenure as Athletic Director was that the school was under intense pressure by both California and federal education officials to start making progress in implementing Title IX. As late as 2003, it was way, way behind the curve. One of the reasons given for dissolving the football program was to expand the school’s basic support for women’s intercollegiate sports.
Despite the major flak I got from some people when I raised the issue earlier, I still think that all out-of -state players in all sports, the cheerleading squad, and the band should pay in-state tuition rates. Other students in work-study programs get their tuition as part of their compensation package.
If they cannot get a scholarship, then they should be able to pay in-state tuition rates.
Remember, these talented young adults spend over a hundred hours each month preparing themselves physically, professionally & psychologically to provide a service to both the University and the larger communities. – all on top of their academic studies.
As a recipient of two academic fellowships back in the day, I would never have been able to afford to attend graduate school without them. BUT, it was understood by all recipients that we were expected to give back to the local community by working 20 hours a week in return for receiving the benefits. For me, it was providing tutoring services including student athletes and working as a research intern at the Legislature & in Washington, DC. Both later led to paid positions.
If these students today play or perform on behalf of the school, they should all receive the same level of benefits. That could be defined either as scholarships or as in-state tuition charges.
Even the most pointy-headed intalleckshuals in their ivory tower campus cubbyholes who would never step into the Stan Sheriff Center, let alone drive out to Aloha Stadium in their hybrids, would be hard-pressed to argue against leveling the playing field financially.
Remember too that traditionally UH has drawn upon young adults – especially males – who are trying to get out of the Poverty Pit which has swallowed up so many of their peers. We need to help them succeed in getting a good education & not place barriers in front of them.
Several weeks ago, there was a story about a men’s volleyball player who is going to forego his final playing year to be the team manager in order to stay in school to finish his degree. Sorry – I cannot remember for sure his name – but that should not happen. Stephen – how about a followup story on him.

Okay – here is the story about legislators and the Sugar Bowl.
Back in early January, I asked both Colleen Hanabusa and Calvin Say if any legislators attended the Sugar Bowl representing the Legislature and getting freebies – as opposed to paying their own way.
Both said that a memo went out in December that no one could take anything from the University without paying for it. Now, I don’t know about standing in lines, but Mark is a season ticket holder so I assume that he, like several thousand others, got first dibs on buying tickets.
If people were planning to attend – even paying their own way – they were asked to let the leadership in either the House & Senate know in advance.
Sen. Norman Sakamotom, Chair of the Education Committee, specifically told me last weekend that he did not go to the game even on his own dime for fear that someone might think he was getting something for nothing.
Mark did attend the Sugar Bowl, but he was traveling as a supporter and not as a legislator. I assume he went on a separate flight because he was using the travel opportunity to deal with a variety of personal and professional matters after the game.
If anyone has concerns, all you have to do is pick up the phone and call him at 586-8455.
BHF2 – I agree with you that Mark Takai is a great friend of the entire University of Hawai`i System; however, I have to agree with the leadership in this instance that legislators should not take any freebies. We can honor him in other ways such as making him a guest of honor at one of the T-Gates.

I remember Mark T. being the ASUH president when I was an undergrad. I thought he was a great advocate of the student body and representative of the school. So far, he seems to be a very loyal alumni and really looking out for the best interest of the University.

Please do not consider this flak, but what you are suggesting (letting walk-ons pay in-state tuition rates) is an NCAA violation. I explained this the last time you suggested it and the rules governing athletes are clear. Students in work-study are not governed by the NCAA, but athletes are.
The cheerleaders and band are a different story, as there are no rules against that. However, if the cost is charged to the Athletic Department for the difference between in-state and out-of-state rates then it would be a burden they cannot afford. If the University would pass a rule that would have the University absorb the cost then it would be affordable for Athletics…but then you would have others asking for a similar deal.

Receipt by a student-athlete of an award, benefit or expense allowance not authorized by NCAA legislation renders the student-athlete ineligible for athletics competition in the sport for which the improper award, benefit or expense was received. If the student-athlete receives an extra benefit not authorized by NCAA legislation, the individual is ineligible in all sports.

I would assume that a lot of out of state walkon’s get WUE rates on tuition and that is cheaper than a lot of schools. A California student paying WUE rates at UH is still cheaper than any school in the Pac-10. WUE requires good grades but it is only 150% of in state tuition.

Worse, there was not a single open table to which to move. It was bad enough the buffet line was close-by and there was open food.
I kept standing up to take a look at the buffet line at the opposite side of the restaurant. Had to be the least I have ever eaten at dinner.

wafan—ah…the sound of reason…well, in all honestly, the melodious baritone can get squeeky sometimes…but I think we discussed this…as teachers, the silent stink eye, or the silent “what the heck is going on? I am so disappointed in you” look is often (if not always) much more effective….but my ‘kids’ (my adult ‘children’), when they were in elem school, used to tell me that they hated that I was a teacher because they thought I used all my patience on my kids at school…and they would tell me that those kids were not really my kids…and that THEY were really my kids (like I didn’t know to whom I gave birth? like they deserved special treatment or something?)! HA! I still think that is hilarious…and I would tell them as lovingly as I could that I didn’t know how all of my kids at school were raised, and so I had to sometimes give them more chances than I would give my real kids, because I knew how my real kids were raised and therefore I did not need to, for instance, ask them more than once to put away their laundry- because they knew better…
Not coming back to CA until 6/25 and hope to make it a short and sweet trip- am still playing catch up from last trip and it’s very, very tiring! Would like to come back and visit OR and WA when it is not so darn cold and snowing where ‘it never snows’!

Like your take on Michele Wie’s media problem – I have always objected to beat writers or commentators who “rag” on her for missing putts, but say nothing when other top players miss short putts or at worst glance over it and move on.
I would prefer that they track all players who made or missed putts for the 18 holes or for the tournament and see what the actual results were.

From what I’ve read, bungahead1 owes Rep. Takai an apology. Why he would make such an assumption and then spread it on an open forum confuses me. Rep. Takai said quite some time ago that he paid his own way and the Legislature made it clear before the Sugar Bowl that none of them would be accepting UH money for their trip. Plus, he had business in LA after the Sugar Bowl so he clearly was not on UH’s plane.

RE: directions- I have a hard time while in the mainland with the N-S-E-W thing- can’t people just tell you right or left? It’s not like I can see the ocean most of the time to KNOW where west is (sun sets in the west)…but, conversely, I know mainland people sometimes have hard time with our mauka, makai (although most times you can see the kai!) and leeward and windward (although the hint of wind in windward is kind of obvious to me)…
The other thing about freeways (in CA) at least is that the final destination is often used to identify the freeway, but if you are not going to the final destination and don’t even know where that place is, or what is in-between, you sometimes have little panic attacks when making lane changes…and lots of second guessing of yourself…I made it fine to the CC in Orange County, but totally screwed up on the way home as I thought I could just reverse the directions…couldn’t!
I really like how Houston’s coach lists RGM among their key people that they are missing due to injury. I do hope that RGM is able to practice soon, and that he’s fully healthy (or at least close enough to recovered) to practice full-speed without being hampered by injury.

I do not see how the UH, or any university for that matter, can give in-state tuition to only the athletes. That would be discrimination to those out-of-state students who do not play any sports. Even if they are putting in a lot of time with their school work, community, and sports consider there are others who are not in sports but put in as much time for their school work, and community.
I like the idea, though. And agree something should be done. Unfortunately (?), it has to be done within the rules and regulations of the NCAA.

Generaly, I-5 runs North and South except in a few places where it really runs East-West just because of the layout. That really confused me when I first moved here. Having the sun rise in the “North” simply because the highway was really running East-West for a short distance. Weird.

The Pacific Coast Highway is really Highway 101 as it is known up here in Washington. I have driven it up here and part of Oregon and it is just a two lane road with lots of twists and turns, and with some of the most beautiful scenery! I think in California Hwy 101 was widened into a 4+ lane highway in some of the bigger towns/cities. I kind of like the smaller and quieter places — especially the wooded areas.
If you are going to insinuate something then find out it’s not correct, most people will apoligize for their error.

One note that probably won’t help you in driving on the mainland…
Interstate Freeways with odd numbers generally run north-south, even numbers run east-west.
The three digit ones eventually connect to the freeway referenced…105, 405, 605 connect at some point to I-5. 210 and 710 to I-10.
Of course if you get directions from long time southern Cal people…it’ll be like getting directions at home where you give the tourists names while they are hunting for numbers. Santa Monica Freeway, Long Beach Freeway, San Diego Freeway, Ventura Freeway, San Bernardino Freeway, etc…

lizk yep PC has always had 2 to 3 place within the night to take the kids. just before morning check out a video is shown to them from graduation to earliest part of the last sight.
its really well planned and tons of different stuff for them to do at each place. parents, lions club, bands, make up and hair people donate their expertise to make it a fun time. they choose the site to be at and just show at that site and time. it relieves parent from having to do it all night. like shift work bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

d1 I was kind worried because neva know had 50th state fair going on. usually we try to keep one entrance open for parents to enter which is upper front gate on left side of ticket box office. at end of ceremony graduates exit north endzone to meet parents in parking lot. lots of space with the alpha posted on the light posts. heard from the committee guys had log jam in front because of fair.
stadium neva inform us of da fair because I no recollect have both going on at same time. usually state fair durnign 4th july times.

Here is one for ST to sort out…a certain paid professional entertainer’s son, who I had heard had sent his Letter of Intent to Portland State (his mother said on the Jeff Portnoy Show, in April, that he was confirmed to play for PSU), told me directly that he will be playing for McMackin this Fall, not Glanville. Yes that was me on the ladder in the north end zone, lil’s (my son) was helping me.
We don’t do video professionally, just the occasional Youth League game of our nine year old.
I was a little late after crawling through traffic from Moanalua Road to Aloha (kinda reminded me of UH vs USC back in ’99). I guess HPD merged 4 lanes into 1 to help facilitate cars leaving the stadium after the ceremony.
