Steele shows mettle

Quarterback Steele Jantz participated in his first offseason passing drills yesterday afternoon, impressing UH teammates with his arm strength.
Jantz, who is 6 feet 3 and 208 pounds, is a graduate of Nevada Union High in California. He missed all but three games of the 2007 season after suffering a broken leg.
Before attending Nevada Union, he was a student at Crespi High.

I told Jett Jasper that he had a fan on the blog. He was like, “What? Me?” Jett’s a great guy, very humble, and he works hard. I know the coaches are trying to get him on the training camp roster. It’s a tough numbers crunch. Anyway, here’s Jett saying aloha to his No. 1 fan from Kaua‘i:

Give credit to Jim Donovan and Scott Chan for an agreement to turn over 1,000 Aloha Stadium parking stalls to UH. (Although announcing the plan during Calf Call was, well, uncalled for.) It is estimated UH can earn $100,000 by selling those stalls.
Still, I like Robert Kekaula’s plan better.
Aloha Stadium currently gets to keep all of the revenue from parking. The stadium charge is $5 per car, and there are an estimated 8,000 stalls. For seven home games, the stadium would earn $280,000.
Kekaula’s suggestion is to double the parking charge to $10 per car, with UH getting the additional $5 per auto.

kekaula.jpg

Under his plan, UH gets $280,000 for the seven home games, revenue it wouldn’t have received in the past. Aloha Stadium keeps those 1,000 stalls and maintains its $280,000 revenue. And there is no change to the fans, except paying more for parking. But even at $10, that’s a bargain compared to other prime parking spots for Mainland events.
What do you think?

    Morning Liz,

Yep, such a sad story on what should be a joyous event!

A permanent solution to a temporary problem! Prayers to the family and friends.

  4. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 12:49 am

    Morning Duffer.
By the way, I have received the envelopes from Al.
    Thanks again.

  5. LizKauai May 31, 2008 12:49 am

    All Right, JETTTTTTTT!!!!

  6. LizKauai May 31, 2008 12:51 am

Is it me or does Jantz resemble a certain QB coach back in the day when he played????

  7. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 12:51 am

    Liz:
All I know is that Jett is one pinkie short of a shaka.

  8. LizKauai May 31, 2008 12:53 am

    hahaha… must be the camera angle/timing 😆

  9. duffer May 31, 2008 12:54 am

    ST,

Happy to do it for your bloggers. Maybe I can get some t-shirts and stuff. They’ll be here next week!

  10. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 12:56 am

    Gimme the sizes.

  11. duffer May 31, 2008 12:59 am

No, I mean get some shirts from them to give away as blog prizes! 🙂

Gee, I haven’t posted this often since I’ve been here!

  12. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:01 am

    Oh, sorry. My bad.
Hey, Riley’s in town. We should all get together.

  13. duffer May 31, 2008 1:02 am

I know they wanted to see if they could “borrow” that thingy that shoots t-shirts into the crowd at the basketball games. I don’t know the outcome of that. Well I guess it didn’t actually!

  14. duffer May 31, 2008 1:05 am

The group will be in Oahu the week of the 9th. Want to play some golf? I don’t think Riley’s game has improved with retirement.

  15. LizKauai May 31, 2008 1:05 am

wow… there is a pic of Rolo in 2003 – highly similar to the Jantz look. Not linking it ’cause it is from daodda papah. Hope Steele stays healthy and gets a chance to make his mark!

  16. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:07 am

I don’t play golf, but I’d go out there for the 19th hole.

  17. LizKauai May 31, 2008 1:07 am

I am nodding… La Mancha practice tomorrow and then grandson’s birthday party at the beach!

Nitey nite and the sweetest of sweet dreams to you all!

  18. WarriorMojo May 31, 2008 1:09 am

Wow, a new post to reward us night shift guys! Thanks, ST.

Garret, I just now checked my email. Didn’t know what you were referring to when you said you had sent me something, but now I do. Will get back to you shortly.

  19. duffer May 31, 2008 1:12 am

I don’t play golf, but I’d go out there for the 19th hole.

I’ll be in touch, I know they’d like to meet you! Me too for that matter!

  20. Jason May 31, 2008 1:14 am

I saw “Steele,” and I thought, “Phil Steele said something about us?”

  21. marlis May 31, 2008 1:16 am

first impressions of steele- On appearance, he reminds me of Travis Laboy. Similar swagger and look in the eyes. Looks like he could fit the mold of one of those MMA competitors. He looks tough.

  22. duffer May 31, 2008 1:22 am

Hey Jason, a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

    You’re up late…no curfew…..

  23. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:22 am

    He’s really tall.
There’s a lot of QB talent out there.

  24. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:25 am

I met Repetti several years ago, when I was covering UH basketball. Great guy.
Too bad Frazier blew it with the Boyd Group. If they ponied up the millions they were thinking of giving, then Cooke (I mean, Ching) Field would be quite the complex.

  25. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:26 am

Actually, I met more people when I was covering basketball. That’s because we could hang out with the team more on the road. In football, it’s hanging out in the lobby as the players exit 1 a.m. meetings.

  26. WarriorMojo May 31, 2008 1:30 am

ST, how did frazier blow it? And is it too late to re-visit that opportunity now?

  27. duffer May 31, 2008 1:33 am

This was due to Riley acknowledging the Boyd group in public for all they did for the basketball team and UH sports in general. JJ and HF didn’t do that at all.

  28. Jason May 31, 2008 1:35 am

I’m doing research on Jantz. Quoting Stephen:

    He attended practice last week.
He’s going to walk on, as a safety. He’ll probably have to redshirt. That’s UH’s deepest position right now.

From what I hear, the guy’s a decent athlete. Some message board posters have discussed him as a safety/linebacker guy who could try and develop into a QB. I couldn’t corroborate this, but one person said he did not have much experience as a QB prior to his senior year, and then he broke his leg.

  29. Jason May 31, 2008 1:36 am

Er, I think playing time would be better than experience. Bad choice of words on my part, there.

  30. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:37 am

    Mojo:
He took too long to close the deal. They waited and waited, and then the offer was gone.
I never could figure him out. He seemed smart. He was personable. But he never could finish anything. And he never listened to anybody.
The general counsel told him to check with the ethics commission before extending the Sugar Bowl list. He went ahead, anyway.

  31. duffer May 31, 2008 1:38 am

    Warrior Mojo,

JD and the Boyd group are old friends. It goes back to the Hugh Yoshida days. I’m sure JD will make things right.

    BTW

I met your dad at Komoda’s a few months back!

  32. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:39 am

I was told he would be a safety. But there he was yesterday, flinging long passes.

  33. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:40 am

I’m impressed with Jeramy Bryant’s work habits. He was doing ladder drills.
    He has great footwork.

  34. marlis May 31, 2008 1:41 am

remember the maloof family, too. hope they show for practices this year.

  35. WarriorMojo May 31, 2008 1:41 am

Just saw KHNL’s report on the new Word of Life football team that is starting up under Joe Onosai. Pretty awesome work that Brother Joe is doing. Bet he wishes he had Brashton and Tipoti, though.

  36. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:45 am

The problem with the previous administration is that they never started any events. Everything was a carryover from somebody else’s work; then they’d show up, smile for the cameras, and slip to their table in the corner.
JJ was so fed up he got into the fund-raising business, which is how his foundation ended up funneling all of that money to Na Koa the past year.

  37. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 1:46 am

My niece, a Word of Life graduate, was surprised Tipoti didn’t go to UH. Tipoti and Onosai’s daughter are dating. She’s at UH.

  38. WarriorMojo May 31, 2008 1:54 am

ST, thanks for the info. Herman was always more concerned about his image than with actually getting things done. Rather than acknowledge there was a problem and getting help, he chose to BS his way because he was afraid of looking stoopid. Well, there’s only so long that you can continue that before it all catches up.

Re Tipoti: Careena transferred back from UCLA. Didn’t she tell Tipoti that the mainland ain’t all its cracked up to be? Oh, well.

Duffer, you met MY dad? Hmmm, I don’t think he’s been to Maui in decades.

  39. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 31, 2008 1:55 am

    Early Good Morning Everyone.

These past ten days have not been that great. If something could go wrong, it did.

First, the blown motor in the washer which cost us $$$ to fix plus we got to eat a $50 deposit from the first Repair Guy who never came back to do the actual repair work. We priced new washers, but there’s no way given what happened a few days later that we could pay for one anytime soon. Perhaps in a couple of years.

Sometime last Sunday morning, our 1988 Toyota was vandalized – along with several other cars – in a hotel parking lot. No insurance coverage, but we still had to come up with a huge chunk of change to get everything replaced.

That happened within 24 hours of receiving the letter about the loss of funding – and my day job. Job-hunting is always a pain, but a real challenge for older folks. Hopefully, I’ll have another 25 -30 years of usable shelf life left until I die.

Then on Tuesday, our e-mail/website hosting service went into a major meltdown causing all sorts of chaos which we’re still trying to straighten out. We have five business websites plus our personal e-mail addresses so free hosting services are not an option .Thus when things go wrong, they go wrong bigtime. We’ll be getting a credit on our next bill, however.

That was followed on Wednesday evening with our dog breaking his 50′ cable, pushing through a 6′ high redwood gate, and nipping a kid walking by with his parents at 8:30 pm. We’d gone shopping at Windward Mall and were away from the house for slightly over two hours. Now we’re facing criminal charges as owners of a Dangerous Dog. Ironic given that we’re the ones who got the law passed over a period of 1,199 days from November,1998, through September, 2001

And now I’m coming down with a really nasty summer cold.

Anyhow, when I checked e-mail around 11 pm, the missing ones from Thursday night and Friday morning finally downloaded containing information about the Calf Call. The latter one was time-stamped about 40 minutes ahead of the one sent last night. As soon as I get my voice back, I’m going to call ValueWeb to get their take on what happened. Maybe we have to replace the e-mail program itself.

It’s bad enough that there are no live sports in town, all the tv shows are on summer break or showing re-runs. Guess it’ll be going to the movies & reading books & upgrading the bridge skills for the next couple of months.

Hope everyone had a good time at Friday’s lunch and hope that all of you have a good time later today at Nancy’s. I’ve got to take the car in to the last of the repairs and am getting a ride out to Mililani for the meeting and then will be dropped off at the repair shop afterwards.

    WarriorMojo,

My bad, it may have been Hooiki’s dad. Memories going going gone! I haven’t stayed up this late in ages!

  41. marlis May 31, 2008 2:07 am

about fund raising- you mean arrive at a cocktail party. mingle with the boosters. tell a few jokes warm up the house have the deep pockets gravitate to you instead of retreating back to your table being less engaging, less personable

come to think of it I remember one of garret’s posts saying how one of his relatives had observed a HF at a party being the person we come to know now.

  42. Esme May 31, 2008 2:21 am

Hey, gang! Long time no see/smell/hang out.

Sorry to hijack this conversation, but I’ve run out of avenues for this thing I’m trying to figure out …

WarriorMojo, d1, Liz, A-Joe and any other fans of music in general, here’s a totally off-topic query: Any of you (or your kids, where applicable) follow “American Idol” this year? If so, did anyone manage to download any songs by the winner, David Cook? I am disappointed that I’m not able to find much of anything download-able at this point. His independent albums have been taken off sales from Amazon, etc., and only his single release remains on iTunes. I understand that during the “Idol” season, the contestants’ weekly songs could be found regularly on iTunes, but I didn’t start watching until the last couple weeks. Anyone can help?

Obvious this blog is supposed to be (mainly) about football, and yet I’m constantly amazed time and again by how resourceful my fellow Tsaikos are. I figger if I ask here, ya never know what you might find. Thanks, gang!

OK, back later (I hope). Still workin’ … 😡

  43. Esme May 31, 2008 2:23 am

WassupDoc, btw, so very sorry to hear about that horrendous string of bad luck! Wow — please take care! …

  44. Esme May 31, 2008 2:25 am

Oooohhh, lookeeeee here, I’m alone in the Tsaiko clubhouse again. What shall I do first … bounce on the bunk beds? Drink all the leftover Crown? Raid the fridge for the leftovers from the CC? Turn on the karaoke machine and play mike-hog all by myself? Hmmm …
    😆

  45. al May 31, 2008 2:33 am

wow. what is everyone doing up this late?

me, i just finished watching the season finale of “lost” and this past “l n l” show.

duffer, talk to you later this week. go easy on the boyd folks out there on the course.

  46. HiFlyer May 31, 2008 2:34 am

Esme , drink the crown first then grab then turn on the karaoke machine and everthing else will take care of it self.

Liz, sorry to here about your son friend.

  47. al May 31, 2008 2:35 am

esme…..you can download about 8-10 david cook stuff on “limewire.com”.

  48. al May 31, 2008 2:36 am

you have your own karaoke system?

  49. Esme May 31, 2008 2:36 am

al: Really?! I gonna check right now. 😉

  50. Esme May 31, 2008 2:41 am

al … did you mean livewire?

  51. Esme May 31, 2008 2:44 am

al, no karaoke system of my own. I was just kidding about having one here in the virtual clubhouse. Heh. 😉

Anyway … OK, so now I’m on livewire (assuming that’s what you really meant to type), and … I’m lost. How did you find said list of 8-10 downloads? I’m on the site now…

  52. al May 31, 2008 2:45 am

esme. click this and download the program.
then go to search-audio enter david cook.

    http://limewire.com/

  53. Esme May 31, 2008 2:54 am

al, I feel like an idiot. I have limewire installed now, but how do I get to the search-audio field? …

  54. Pomai May 31, 2008 2:56 am

al and esme, when you download Limewire just be careful because they try to put a lot of adware on your computer, other than that they have a good site.

  55. Pomai May 31, 2008 2:58 am

esme top left side of the screen!

  56. Esme May 31, 2008 3:04 am

To all folks reading this and going, “Huh?!” — I’m sorry. Al and Pomai are serving as my middle-of-the-night tech support. I promise to leave this blog back to football momentarily …

But Pomai … what url are you looking at? The limewire.com home page has no upper left field. The only music-related link is the music store on the right, and I’ve already come up empty searching there …

  57. Esme May 31, 2008 3:10 am

Wait a minute. I get it now. WHOA! Lotsa stuff there. OK, thanks al and Pomai! 😀 Happy camper now.

  58. al May 31, 2008 3:35 am

pomai…..i guess my norton security has been doing wonders blocking the stuff.

    gnite.

  59. J May 31, 2008 3:39 am

Morning…well, at least the sun is up here. Not so sure about me.

  60. Esme May 31, 2008 4:01 am

al and Pomai, I just finished finding the songs I was hoping for. So stoked! BEEg mahalo for your guidance.

See? In No. 42, I was right: Our resourceful Tsaikos know ALL.

    Going to sleep happy.

OK, returning this blog to your regularly scheduled programming: football!

    Zzzzzz.

  61. Esme May 31, 2008 4:03 am

    BEEg = BEEG

Fingers don’t work so good at this hour. 😉

  62. bighilofan2 May 31, 2008 4:32 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Warrior Mojo,
I was up at 3:30 but i was reading up on last nite’s posts from Stretch and you guys.

    Stretch,
thank you thank you. I guess we’ll see about how fast either or both Brent and Greg improve in the next 75 days, huh? Good for Inoke, keep it up, guy.

    Tyler,
ahem… where you stay? playing hookie? tired and taking a small kine break? i know i know, you’re always there when we need you.. you always show up an save the day… but we’re in the jungle, champ. there is no rest but the forward leaning rest… we’re a team… you gotta show leadership to da rest of Warrior Nation… Florida is in 91 days…. so, gimme 3000 😆

  63. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 4:34 am

    Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister,

Looks like our Warriors are bursting at the seems with talent. It’s a tough, but also a pleasant problem to find room for all of it. Have a great day.

  64. bighilofan2 May 31, 2008 5:05 am

    Florida Ted,
no kiddin da Nation is bustin at da seams wit good lookin talent… UH is da place fo look at muskula guyz in UA ahparal. Thanks for the pix, ST.

    patience is a virtue, isn’t it? 91 days, 91 days….

btw, I wonder how Nick is “feelin” about the “informalz” I wonder who is correcting “a bad habit” before it becomes something that needs correctin…

but mostly, I’m wondering about these things. who is informally doing Speed & Quickness and planting stuff with the Oline peeps? Does LaCount call “them” or do “they” call him? Will LaCount count in the cohesion factor in the Florida game? Will the Oline step up in Florida?
Are the D guys helpin the Oline guys now?

  65. Garret May 31, 2008 5:06 am

    ST,

Thank you for all the interesting information today about HF and fundraising!

Another QB at UH? Wow, they will all push each other over the summer in workouts and then the Fall camp competition will be intense!

  66. Garret May 31, 2008 5:10 am

Looks like the Houston Texans signed *2* WRs recently, including one who is eligible for the Practice Squad (WR out of Kansas who was in the NFL last year). RGM’s injury is given as a reason for the signings.

Carter gives the Texans a veteran playmaker who adds needed depth considering some of the recent injuries at the position. He joins Simmons, cornerback Jimmy Williams and tight end Ryan Krause as the team’s most recent signings.

“I think that’s the first thing that you think about is the experience,” General Manager Rick Smith said of the two wideouts. “They’re guys that understand the game, know how we work and I think are still good football players. In the case of Tim, with (Ryan) Grice-Mullen and Andre (Johnson) nursing a couple of injuries, we needed some more wide receivers and I think he’s a guy who could come in and really compete with our group.”

  67. Garret May 31, 2008 5:11 am

This guy talks about Colt on his podcast. I don’t have time to listen to it right now, but I thought I’d post the link.

In This Episode: Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom interview Will Allensworth from Hogshaven.com Topics Include: how is Erasmus James going to fit in, will this be the true breakout year for Jason Campbell, can Colt Brennan be the QB of the future, a discussion about the new weapons in the passing game, plus more!

  68. Garret May 31, 2008 5:12 am

Mack sure is doing a lot of public relations!

It’s the largest charity golf tournament in the state, and this year’s “First Hawaiian Bank REHAB Golf Challenge” brought in Warrior head football coach Greg McMackin as the Honorary Chairperson.

Dawning his shades, and a University of Hawaii polo shirt, Greg McMackin is ready to put his golf game to the test.

Coach Mack is the honorary chairperson for the REHAB Golf Challenge which benefits the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific.

“He is definitely now higher profile, and so we wanted to get him into the highest profile charitable golf tournament there is in the state of Hawaii,” said Michael Perry, REHAB Foundation chairman.

Money raised from the challenge goes to helping the clinicians at the hospital advance in their field.

  69. myki1 May 31, 2008 5:18 am

Good morning bhf2, Garret, and all other early birds. It’s great to read about the informal workouts. Can’t wait to go up and see for ourselves and get to know the fellas.

Looking forward to todays CC, and meeting another Tsai-ko. Hope you all have a great weekend.

Congratulations to all the graduates tonight. Keep safe and make wonderfull memories.

  70. bighilofan2 May 31, 2008 5:58 am

  71. bighilofan2 May 31, 2008 6:08 am

reading the dallas morning news and a past article on SMU getting JJ, that Greg McMackin took a assistant’s job there, yada yada. That Pres. McClain apologized to the State of Hawaii for letting things get this far, that exceptional performance deserves exceptional.. yada yada…That UH Athletics was not being run like a top 25 national program. yada yada.

Then I started thinking about where we are today and where we’re going tomorrow. When I look at Alexandah da Great I’m tinkin we gonna chisel dat buggah. We’re gonna beef up Brent. We’re gonna go left. We’re gonna go right. We’re gonna make da heir. we gonna run da geckos ovah. We gonna fight fight fight. Coach…. wea is my unifoooam!!! 😀

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  72. LizKauai May 31, 2008 6:34 am

Esme- David Cook music video and Idol segments are abundant in YouTube. Just search for his name.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=3yLCnxqtvv0&feature=related

I found him “pitchy” at times but he has the “it” factor… Colt on the stage 😆
(Our CPA is gaga over him and “forced” me to listen to him at the end. I picked da odda David for voice quality).

  73. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 6:42 am

While we all appreciate offering Esme some help, the blog host would like to make it clear that he does NOT endorse in any way (publicly) using sites that promote downloading free music.
A lot of people work hard in the production of a song — writers, performers, engineers, mixers, etc. — and they deserve to be paid.

  74. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 6:43 am

I’ve got to make sure I post the don’t-sue-the-host warnings every so often.

  75. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 6:43 am

    Great Morning All.

Better here than missing a “knot” back there in a hospital 😯

  81. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 6:57 am

    Auryte!

I hope that’s just the first of many times UH beats Florida to the punch!

    Thanks

Hmmmm….6:30 am start in Hawaii Nei?
Sounds like a bunch of all-nite pau hana/tailgaters going be planned.
Good thing is should get lots of facetime on CGD. Bad thing is gotta watch Kirk Herb(the smokin’ kine)streit do his yada yada about Hawaii’s ’07 schedule all ovah again.

  82. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 6:58 am

Speaking of hospitals. I went to a graduation ceremony last night, and the speaker was my middle kid’s former P.E. teacher. She had an undetected lifelong ailment. Anyway, a drop of blood went into her spine, causing an inflammation that led to nerve damage. Now she’s in a wheelchair. She’s only about 26, I think. She can’t walk, but that doesn’t stop her from competing in triathlons, using special equipment or her wheelchair.

  83. I Believe May 31, 2008 6:58 am

    aloha kakahiaka..

WDoc- hang in there- gotta be that things will start to upswing

LizK- Prayers are with your family and especially the ‘ohana of your son’s friend

FL Ted- hmmm…but do the women make the rules? Isn’t that done by Wimbledon (and actually, when you think about it, a lot of these ‘things’ are a reflection of viewing women as the weaker sex- now if we are gonna talk about physical strength, I am gonna be the first to admit that most women do not have the same physical strength as men…but I don’t think that is what we are talking about…I think what we are talking about are attitudes and sometimes stereotypes)

If we had always offered the same opportunities to women that have been offered to men, there would be acknowledgment that the pie is only so big, and that it has to be fairly (whatever is decided is ‘fairly’) distributed- it would not be viewed as women’s equal participation taking away from men’s equal participation-
Just as it is not now currently viewed as men’s particpation taking away from women’s participation…but rather, the fact that the pie is only so big and fair and equal distribution will mean some get funding and some don’t…

  84. LizKauai May 31, 2008 6:59 am

    ALOHA KAKAHIAKA!

Man, I fell asleep at the keyboard and barely made it to the bed for a crash.
Still trying to get a number uploaded and working from the band concert the other night.

HI ST! I agree about the moral dangers of downloading music w/o pay. But the kids don’t seem to share the same sentiments…

  85. bighilofan2 May 31, 2008 7:00 am

    D1
check #62. wat, 3000 no nuff for Tyler????

  86. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:00 am

    Early starts are good.
And maybe now UH can get out of Florida earlier, and not lose a day of preparation.
Of course, the earlier start is announced three days after I received my airplane tickets. I guess me and the crew get to go to Disney World.

  87. LizKauai May 31, 2008 7:02 am

    copyright music, that is.

bhf2- We are A POSSE, doesn’t matter who ordered the tix… we all pay, we all go, we hang together to go TeBOWLING in DA SWAMP!!!

  88. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:02 am

A lot of players weren’t out there. That has more to do with afternoon classes.

  89. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:03 am

The main thing is Pride Period can look at a quarterback for two minutes and analyze his strengths and weaknesses.

  90. I Believe May 31, 2008 7:05 am

ST: RE: RK’s ‘Plan” (Under his plan, UH gets $280,000 for the seven home games, revenue it wouldn’t have received in the past. Aloha Stadium keeps those 1,000 stalls and maintain its $280,000 revenue. And there is no change to the fans, except paying more for parking. But even at $10, that’s a bargain compared to other prime parking spots for Mainland events.)…appreciate the new revenue for UH, but don’t think that add’l $5 should come from fans…irrespective of it being a deal compared to mainland parking for events…just kind of tired of being nickeled and dimed…like the airlines charging for checked suitcases…so now people are gonna hand-carry to avoid fee and that will delay boarding and that will cause a delay in the schedule, which adds to costs, etc…and are those add’l costs made up by what is being charged for suitcases? I don’t think so…

  91. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 7:05 am

    bhf2,

OK, I guess. But da slippah also get deterrent factah fo’ da ones dat standin’ aroun’ watchin’, eh?
Doing 3000 only going pump up da oddahs who like say, “Eh, I can do that, too!”

  92. MeiLing May 31, 2008 7:06 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Aloha stadium parking? I just paid $10 in a parking structure across from Chase Field in downtown PHX for a D-Backs game. Went up from $8 two yrs. ago. Robert’s plan would work. I’m planning on taking Da Bus when I go. Do they still run that shuttle from Murphy’s?

ST ~ my comment on Kate’s article got smuud…I posted one yesterday & today no mo’.

Wow! Lots of talent in the wings…Steele & Jett, good luck guys!

  93. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:09 am

I think we can all agree that Title IX is a fair and just law that assures opportunities for a gender that has been historically denied.
The only problem is that football, with 85 scholarships and 115-player rosters, creates an imbalance. There isn’t a women’s sports program that has that big a roster or offers that many scholarships. That’s why there are so few men’s programs at UH.
If football were taken out of the equation, then there could be more balance in the scholarships between men and women.
Or, as Bob Wagner once suggested: Make football a co-ed sport.
Seriously, though, as a father of two daughters, I’m glad females are now growing up in a time when they have an equal opportunity to participate in sports. And (cross-promotion plug) that was the point of Kate Robinson’s excellent journal entry yesterday, which was published in the online version of your favorite newspaper.

  94. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 7:11 am

    WooHoo! Disney World!

Because of change in my schedule, I wasn’t able to check out any of the theme parks in Orlando other than going to Epcot Center at night for a hosted event.
Judging by just that experience I can see why some people come away with a feeling about Disneyworld that “it’s the same as Disneyland, except you gotta WALK more”. The place was HUGE!
Bottom line Stephen, don’t expect to “see it all” in your extra time.

  95. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:12 am

    Mei Ling:
OK, I found out what happened. Because of this terrible new online system, the only way to post Robinson’s journal yesterday was as “breaking news.” So your comment is on Robinson’s breaking-news story.
For the morning edition, the editors took Robinson’s story but copied it to a different template. Only they forgot to move the comments. If you go to “back issues” (following the link on Tizer Web site), you can locate yesterday’s breaking-news stories. Your very nice comments on Robinson are still there.
By the way, for the record, people are SMU’d, not stories.

  96. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 7:14 am

  97. MeiLing May 31, 2008 7:26 am

  102. MeiLing May 31, 2008 7:32 am

ST ~ K, thx for the pic of what happened.

I’ll get to attend the AZ Cardinals practice in August at NAU. LaBoy, Satele, and (Poly boy) Deuce Lutui should be running around on our field up here. The closest I’ll get to HI football till I move home. Have to remember not to sell my TV before the FL game.

  103. LizKauai May 31, 2008 7:33 am

    I Believe- wafan says HI!

Yeah… when I got home last night, #2 son was icing down his knuckles. I guess he and some friends worked out their grief on a punching bag.

There is a whole gaggle of guys here… I can hear them sleeping in the LR. While the seniors were out for project grad, our hale became the juniors’ “project”.

    (ohhh da cuuute) 😆

Orlando’s Disneyworld is Large Tsaiko-sized. Takes a whole day to enjoy it. I went to a conference when we had the entire place after-hours to go to all the attractions, & food stations (catered) were located in each “land”. We could only get to maybe 25% of the attractions in 4 hours without lines. You’ll have to set your priorities if you have only a limited time there.

Is the UH-FL game going to be on ESPN?

  109. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:41 am

    MeiLing:
By then we’ll have this photo thing worked out, and we can post your pictures from practice.

  110. koakane™ May 31, 2008 7:41 am

    another question

when are the techies going to fix the time stamp?

it is starting to increase like the price of gas.

  111. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:43 am

    Gigi:
We apologize for the delay. It’s been an ongoing thing to get all of the permits finalized. If you guys ever make it to our side of the island, give a call. We can show you the place. It’s coming along.

  112. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 7:44 am

I’ll tell the techies about the problem on Monday. They’re good at fixing, but not so swift at detecting.

  113. koakane™ May 31, 2008 7:47 am

Stephen thanks for update on Robinson

  114. oldie May 31, 2008 7:47 am

    ST,

I think RK’s plan sound good; however, I think JD needs to take care of the big boosters. Parking is a hassle so if you’re willing to pay enough through Koa Anuenue, then they will give you guaranteed parking.

Maybe a combination of of JD’s plan and RK’s plan can be worked out. Bottom line is there will be fewer stalls at the cheaper price.

  115. gigi-hawaii © May 31, 2008 7:48 am

Wonder how much most preschools charge now. When my kids were attending back in the 1980s, tuition was $150/month.

Now, daughter says babysitters charge $700-800 so I guess preschools probably charge as much.

  117. myki1 May 31, 2008 7:51 am

    Hi Mei Ling!
I’m sure that Murph will continue to provide the shuttle this season. The bus leaves at 5 p.m. and it was $5 a head last year. He may have to increase the price this year. The disadvantage is there’s no time to tailgate with the Tsai-kos. Another option would be to try and catch a ride with a Tsai-ko in your district . If you live in the Makiki area and don’t mind going early to tailgate we would be happy to give you a ride.

  118. LizKauai May 31, 2008 7:51 am

koakane- yep. We wessai guys keep it on da wessai.
Project Grad used to go to a hotel ballroom – and perhaps other schools still do. Ours starts with registration in the cafeteria after the ceremony and gathering with friends and family. The grads check in with a parent or guardian and are given a special tee shirt. They pack their extra clothes, towel, yearbook, jacket in a special sports bag which they get to keep. We put a laminated luggage tag on the bag (check the contents for contraband – no phones, hats, electronics or other real contraband stuff) and hold all the bags for transport to the proper location.
The grads change into their shirts and hand the parent everything else and are patted down by police officers before entering a secure area of the cafeteria where they enjoy pizza and wait for their fellow students.

Then they go to school buses which take them and their chaperones to the next location – in this case, a ride around the town, then back to the gym for entertainment (hypnotist, etc.).
Then back to the uses for a ride to a restaurant for late supper (this time on the Base), then to another location (between the Base and Waimea) where a mini carnival has been set up – water slide, food booths, massage and hairstyling booths, live band and a dance- and , of course, a tent with cots for crashing. This goes on til 7AM when the buses bring everyone back to school for parental pickup.

It’s a huge undertaking for a little community – but we all work together.

Last year, it was open to all the seniors- grad or not. This year, I don’t know what happened. But we got a new principal and I know a lot of kids did not grad. More kids graduated but were not allowed to walk because of absences or other “infractions”.

To me, Project Grad needs to be all-inclusive and ESPECIALLY for the latter groups – to keep them safe and together. It helped my #2 last year – who got his GED in the summer after.

  119. oldie May 31, 2008 7:53 am

Actually, don’t the top Koa Anuenue members already get favored parking? I think the new parking arrangements just extends the program to a wider circle by allowing others to pay extra for the better parking.

  120. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 8:00 am

    How about a compromise?
Sell the 1,000 seats to UH boosters.
Then raise the price of the other stalls to $10. To compensate for the loss of the 1,000 seats, give Aloha $6 per.
So, it would go like this (based on seven home games): UH’s take would be $296,000 ($100,000 from the 1,000 stalls, $196,000 from the other 7,000 stalls).
    Aloha Stadium would receive $294,000 (7,000 stalls x $6 x 7 home games).

  121. LizKauai May 31, 2008 8:03 am

gigi- not a prob to feed da gaggle.
Put on one pot rice, cook bacon or spam, make scrambled eggs… pau!

I love having a bunch of kids around. When #1 son and daughter were in high school, it was the swim team. Carbo-loading and shave-down parties before meets… we ate a lot of spaghetti and Caesar salad with homemade dressing!

    gigi,

no get me started with baby sitting, pre school and cost. go thru this agruement at least twice a month.

  124. oldie May 31, 2008 8:09 am

    ST,

As I said, I think a combination of JD’s and RK’s plans can be worked out. Hopefully, JD or one of his staff reads this blog.

I believe the fans with full Koa Anuenue membership are already getting “free” parking so there are probably fewer than the 8000 stalls available for sale. This new agreement just cuts that down even further.

Garret pointed out a long time ago that UH could raise additional revenue by increasing $5 parking price. Maybe that’s JD’s and Aloha Stadium’s next step?

  125. Maverick May 31, 2008 8:12 am

    Awesome pics ST –
I haven’t been able to understand the Warhol interest either. I could of wallpapered my entire house for free with old labels from all the cambells soup we ate growing up.

Oh, Good Saturday gang, our last day of May.

  126. gigi-hawaii © May 31, 2008 8:13 am

hmmm I remember paying just 30 cents for parking at the swap meet at the stadium back in the 1980s.

  127. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 8:13 am

At UH, the athletic department doesn’t get parking revenue, even when it is clear that a game at the Stan Sheriff Center or Murakami Stadium is the only event on campus.
That’s because the parking moolah goes to pay off the bond that paid for the construction of the parking structure.

  128. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2008 8:15 am

    He was a pretty cruel.
After his mother died, he told his brother to have the least expensive funeral. He requested that his his mother’s death not be announced. He ultimately did not attend his mother’s funeral.

  129. oldie May 31, 2008 8:17 am

    ST,

Do you media guys get free parking when you’re covering the game? I wonder who else besides the Koa Anuenue folks (who really pay big bucks for their “free” parking) get complimentary parking?

  130. koakane™ May 31, 2008 8:17 am

lizk best part of grad nite for PC anyway is the ending at the last site where a previous grads mom speaks to them. she talks of missing her son because of drinking after graduation and not heeding the warning. not a dry eye in the house. all the kids agree to be safer..it seem to work because there has been less incidents since then. I am talking 10 years now.

so parents of up and coming HS schooler support project grad and make memories with your children.

    off soap box

  131. LizKauai May 31, 2008 8:17 am

Re- Aloha Stadium, parking and revenue sharing… As long as the parties are thinking win-win and not being greedy, something will work out that is fair and equitable and attractive to the fans.

Re Title IX – While it may be some time before women’s sports in general (including pros) have the mass appeal and revenue potential of, say, football, the world will be a better place when that happens.

The LPGA is making great strides (imho) – especially when golf was considered a sport for only men until a few decades ago.

The world needs educated, evolved women.

  132. whitey May 31, 2008 8:18 am

Good morning Tsaikos here in beautiful Hawaii and around the globe.

Most interesting about the parking money at Aloha Stadium. IMHO, If SC or JD had asked the Tsaikos ahead of time for their input, both would be making a lot more money, but sometimes when people get into leadership positions they forget about where they came from.

  133. whitey May 31, 2008 8:22 am

koakane- Of course, Kenny Estes’ parents are Project Grad volunteers – empty nest notwithstanding! Actually, plenty of parents around here are like that. They continue to support the program because it saves lives in more ways than one.

It was also good to see some young alumni volunteering last night. I saw two of last year’s seniors actively involved- even from our cloistered location.

  144. Rabidfanman May 31, 2008 8:41 am

I thought selling a parking permit at 75 which would allow you to park in the lower, and if popular, upper lots starting at noon, would have been a better Idea.

    1. The stadium still charges the 5.00, so they still get their revenue.
    2. 75.00 for the 7 home games is not that outrageous, so us low-income, die hard fans wouldn’t balk immediately at it. Its affordable.
    3. It prevents major traffice back-ups at the 2:30 gate opening times.

With the current plan, can you imagine what traffic is going to be like at gates 1,2 and 5 when parking does open up now? And because of the location of gate 5, those waiting to get into the Kam lot are going to be blocking the access to gate 3, those looking to get into gate 2 will block salt lake blvd. Kahuapaani (is that the cross street) will be blocked as well, at least till the lots are full.

I can appreciate JD’s fund raising efforts, and if people are willing/can afford to pay an additional 400 for parking at 7 games, God bless em. I cannot afford to though, and am unwilling now to go try compete with 20K other fans for the remaining spaces.

  145. protector May 31, 2008 8:42 am

In regard to Jantz, was he heavily recruited by UH? I don’t remember any mention of him previously. It would take real chutzpah to try to compete with that QB log-jam. If he’s coming to compete at safety, the team seems to have a lot of depth there also. What made him come out here rather than stay on the West Coast?

  146. ai-eee-soos May 31, 2008 8:47 am

    ST – re: Steele Jantz.

Methinks he should gray-shirt and enroll in Spring ’09.

That way, his 5-year college clock starts in ’09, rather than ’08.

Gives him plenty extra time to develop.

Right now, team is loaded with QB’s & Safeties.

    What you think?

  147. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 8:49 am

    I Believe (83),

Even though it may appear that way, we don’t have a disagreement about title 9. I personally think it is absolutely great, having had a daughter and now a granddaughter playing 3 or 4 sports. Football with its 85 scholarships just skewers the data somewhat, that’s all, see the Tsai-Meisters comment above.

As far as my statement about Wimledon, that has nothing to do with title 9, that’s the category of equal pay for equal work and has nothing to do with gender or weaker or stronger sex. For years womens groups lobbied for equal price money with the men, but they balked about playing the same five set matches. That’s my only beef, it still would be men against men and women against women, they only would have to work equally hard for their price money.

  148. I Believe May 31, 2008 8:50 am

ST- thanks for the comments re: Title IX- as wafan would say, “Ah…the sound of common sense…” (Aloha wafan; LizK- thanks for the shout-out from him! I promise to get something in the mail to you- the catch up from the extended trip has just been crazy and on-going- almost like there’s no end in sight and gotta go back in three weeks- sheesh!). I have both a male ‘child’ (26) and a female child (23) and I expected them to have the same opportunities and expected them to have the same responsibilities- no boy or girl chores around here- they were just chores and needed to be done as part of a ‘functional’ family with all contributing age-appropriate equally…that last part can be an analogy for men’s and women’s sports, too…

But…(and we can agree to disagree)…we cannot (and, imho should not) always use football as the measuring stick…otherwise, to do so, continues the ‘argument’ of : “…to provide equally to women is to take away from men…” That is not the issue; that is not the rationale behind the Legislation…how long has football been around? Compare that to many women’s sports…take a look at what Julie Foudy (formerly of the Nat’l Women’s Soccer Team, which, among many other accomplishments, won the historic game against China in the Women’s World Cup) has to say on the issue- same with Billie Jean King- same with …I could go on and on, but don’t want to ruffle feathers…

ST: Good job with the steele/mettle reference…you are SO clever! Also, think your final suggestion- the happy medium- re: parking revenue is worth pursuing.

    Go Warriors!

    Good morning gangees,

Have a great time @ CC today. I know you guys can eat my share too! 😆

ST – are you planning to go to DisneyWorld after the game? Check the website for the hours. I think they go off extended hours sometime mid to late August. Animal Kingdom always closes around 6, so don’t waste your money there. I would recommend either Epcot or MGM Studios (or whatever they’re calling it these days). Epcot is huge and IMHO MGM has better rides (I love roller coasters). Magic Kingdom is pretty much, but not exactly, the same as Disneyland, just bigger (more walking).

Other places to consider for all you guys going up there – Kennedy Space Center, Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure. Islands has some awesome rollercoasters. Oh yeah, and Busch Gardens in Tampa. Free beer (in limited quantities) with the most awesome rollercoaster – Sheikra.

Wish I was going, but saving my vacation days for next summer.

  150. MeiLing May 31, 2008 8:54 am

    LizK,

Namakakehau…sorry to hear about your son’s friend. I used to have a house full of teen boys hanging out, sleeping over, making fried rice burritos for breakfast (ramen burritos were the strangest.) It helps to have a place for them to hang that’s safe & supportive. The grad night programs are great to keep them safe during the celebrations. We had 4 teens killed in NoAZ, in one car, due to drinking & speeding (not on grad nite) last year. Breaks you heart.

myki1, I hope to have a place to live in McCully-Mo’ili’ili when I move home. I’ll have to figure out how to get around without driving a lot (one reason I want to move home.) Thanks for the offer of a ride. I would love to make the T-gates; I organized the ones we’ve started here for the Hapa club, cuz I’m the one with the hibachi.

  151. Rabidfanman May 31, 2008 8:58 am

    MeiLing –

There are a zillion busses that pass through Moiliili/McCully area. I know because I have to run between grocery stores daily as part of my job. I gave up driving because of the cost, and with the 40.00 bus pass, I have no problems getting to the stores, unless I have to lug around boxes of stuff.

  152. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:00 am

FL Ted- your point, re: equal pay, is well taken, but that is also why there are still efforts re: reaching equal pay and there is still an Equal Pay ‘event’ across the nation, annually, to bring attention to the matter…Every state in the nation has a Commission on the Status of Women and they often champion this cause (among others) because, on average, women make 75 cents for every dollar earned by a male…at the same job, with the same qualifications as the male.
In Hawai’i, because we are an island state, there is the overall Commission on the Status of Women, made up of island representation, and there are also Committees on the Status of Women on each island. Some people have suggested that there should be a Commission and / or Committee on the Status of Men. I have no problem with that, but personally don’t see the need. I just want to continue to champion equity…especially for girls and sports because I think that girls deserve to have the same benefits of sport participation that boys have…and, yes, I think we agree on more than we disagree.

Perhaps Wimbledon’s winner’s pay is not a good example because of the difference in sets played, but, again, who decides that? Wimbledon is steeped in tradition and very slow to change anything…especially when it comes to women as women had more rules than men re: appropriate attire forever…so I am not at all convinced that it was women balking about the number of sets as opposed to Wimbledon deciding on the number of sets (and, frankly, that decision was probably based on the notion of women being the weaker sex and that they couldn’t handle more sets) and, yes, I do think this all ties in to Title IX.

    Enjoy your comments!

Glad you find the time to blog with all the activity going on at home.

Really enjoy your play by play blogging. Going to have to find a way to read listen to Curran/Kekaula and read your blog comments when I’m at the games. Don’t have any fancy handhelds so don’t know how I’m going to do that though.

Mei Ling- could you give me contact info for the Hapa Club? I am so happy for you to move home, but sorry that I could not meet you there…

My daughter was gonna start a POI Club- (People of the Islands) while in school in Santa Barbara, but wanted to limit to ‘only’ people from the islands…told her I didn’t think the school would support that…kind of unconstitutional if at a publicly supported college….and was that really showing the aloha spirit, which would be a good purpose for the club in addition to addressing people’s homesickness, etc.? She didn’t care! ‘Auwe…they come from you, but they do not always embrace what you have tried to teach them…but one keeps hoping…

  156. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 9:11 am

Living in Florida now, there is still one weird problem I’m trying to get used to. In Hawaii, when somebody says “it’s right down the street” they mean 100 to 300 yards. In Florida, when somebody says the same thing, they mean 5 to 7 miles, lol. I also always think I’ve overshot my destination on these endless roads everywhere, when in reality I’m not even close. In Hawaii a trip to the North Shore is a ‘trip’, here it would barely be considered a jaunt. I drive 15 minutes to Clearwater Beach, to people here that means I live “next” to the beach, lol.

  157. MeiLing May 31, 2008 9:12 am

rabidfan, I know about the bus routes cuz I grew up in McCully, right on So. King St. That’s why I’m planning on moving back to that area. I used to catch the bus to go work at the cannery in the summer, go to Hanauma Bay by bus, but walked to Ala Moana to go to the beach. Even tho it only takes me 15 mins. to drive to work here, I’m still driving & putting out emissions. I was happy to see Hawaii on the top of the “green” cities list.

I Believe, I’m the co-advisor for the Hapa club on campus. I’ll look for your em addr in the contacts I have from other Tsaiko em’s. Or, go to the nau.edu home page, navigate to the clubs under Student Life & you’ll find my work em. Our club is called HAPA Hawaiian for a reason. When my son started at UoOregon, he wanted to join the Hawaiian club & hang with them so he’d have someone to play ‘ukulele with. But since he was not born in HI, they were really cliche-ish & didn’t make him feel welcome. So, when I started this club with a haole student who had gone to St. Andrews Priory, but not born in HI, we made sure that the club was open to anyone who appreciated the cultures of HI & the Pacific Rim, but you didn’t have to be from HI. We have had Native American students & others hanging with the club & involved in our activities, even doing the SPAM competition. It’s partly to educate others about HI & the culture, as well as giving the HI students support since they are so far away from home. And, I’m sure, being a state institution, you really can’t exclude people from organizations.

Great community effort by 70 volunteers from Hawaii 3R’s to paint Roosevelt High School’s bleachers and kudos to MShiroma Construction for their part in assisting the volunteers.

  162. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 9:29 am

    I Believe,

Again, I don’t think we are in disagreement on anything, really, maybe a few shades of opinion, which only makes it more interesting. I mentioned Wimbledon because that’s my only beef, if one can actually call it that. In most professional sports, men vs women, the market dictates the pay, i.e. golf, WNBA etc. and thus is not really subject to debate.

In the corporate world on the other hand, I’m 100% for equal pay and I’m well aware of still existing inequities. My daughter works for Navy Civil Service as contract specialist, no worries about equal pay there. It strictly goes by pay grade. They are light years ahead of the private sector. The Military always was somewhat of a trail blazer as far as gender and race integration is concerned.

Regardless, I’m enjoying our little discussion.

  165. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:42 am

Fl Ted- last comment as gotta get some chores done- more nowadays as less people doing them since the ‘children’ are gone (even tho they keep moving home)….appreciate your enjoyment of the ‘discussion’ as opposed to getting nuha because of a difference of opinions…but…re: pay for women’s professional sports…that, too, is an issue which should be looked at more…’argument’ is that the pay is dictated by the market…but not really when you think the purses often come from corp sponsors…irrespective of how many tickets to view in person purchased…and then again, it goes back to how long men’s sports have been around and how many more years they have had to develop a following, which then brings in MORE corp sponsors, etc…it’s kind of a vicious cycle…and then when there is the formation of a women’s pro sport…like soccer…they are under the microscope and blamed for everything that goes wrong and there is the quick-to-arrive-at judgment that women’s sports are just not popular when they don’t have sell-out crowds (yet we know that Aloha Stadium- even for football- is rarely sold out) ….and are never gonna bring in the money of…say…football…

…but that’s comparing apples to oranges…witness, though, the women’s softball (college) tourny from yesterday- sold out crowd! YEEHAW! But, how long did that take? It takes time…time that some people are not willing to give because they expect to see instant success; instant money-making and…they want to continue to use football and what revenue it generates as the measuring stick!

  166. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:44 am

Mei Ling- thanks- and good for you for starting club for reasons which you did- and I will try to ‘shame’ my daughter by telling her this! I think she was just ‘over’ some of the attitudes she was getting from mainland people- which ironically she found to be appearing to be prejudicial- yet, she could not see, at that time, that what she was proposing could be viewed same way…ah, youth…she is 23 now and I hope she feels differently…hope springs eternal…but, bottom line is that my new mantra is that they are adults and I am no longer responsible for their attitudes, beliefs, choice of dress, language, body decoration, etc….

To add on the Boyd Gaming donation that fell through…

Despite the deal to donate millions to fix up Cooke field, the Boyd Gaming corporation still donates a ton of money to the University. They will be title sponsor for the home opener against Weber State. During the Sugar Bowl Vacations-Hawaii sold packages and had probably one of the best Tailgate Parties sponsored by Boyd Gaming. Even though it may have seemed like it was only for those who purchased packages, they did not turn any Hawaii fan away. IT was free for any Hawaii fan. In addition, there was enough food at this party and Coach Riley was welcoming all of the fans coming through the front door and put beads on them.

When it came to game tickets. The block that Vacations-Hawaii received WAS NOT ONLY IN THE UPPER DECK BUT IN THE GEORGIA SECTION AS WELL. This pissed off the management at Vacations-Hawaii and word got to the higher ups at Boyd Gaming and a phone call and visit from representatives of Boyd Gaming to the Athletic Department and next thing you know the Boyd Gaming block of tickets was right between the 35-50 yard line lower level. Boyd Gaming was seriously considering pulling sponsorship to UH for this.

Riley Wallace needs to be taken care of. He works for Boyd Gaming now and he deals with a lot of people who drop a large dime at the Boyd casinos, in turn they are more than likely on the UH Bandwagon. Riley’s influence and position being a host provides as a great bridge for more people with deep pockets to donate to the university.

  174. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 10:15 am

    JaM,

That news just made my day.

    I Believe,

Last comment on the subject, again I don’t see disagreement. You are right, the patience factor is always a problem, but as long as God Mammon rules the corporate world, patience and education and trying and trying is all we have.

  175. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 10:18 am

I sure hope UH is treating Riley Wallace with the proper respect from now on, unlike you know who. He could become a huge player for us. He’s highly intelligent, well connected and all he ever wanted was respect.

  176. marlis May 31, 2008 10:33 am

Donating back to the UH is a good thing. And writing as cryptic as I can as not to signal out those that don’t. Because that’s not my intention. With donations being tax write offs, I’m puzzled at how some in good conscience show such disenfranchisement towards their former school. I mean throw them a bone, show some respect, class and appreciation to the ones that supported you and paid for your room and board…10k,20k and 50k is really nothing for those that we have read signing multi million dollar contracts over the off season. C’mon payback the scholie at least…add some bling, too.

On the plus side look at how much better you would feel about yourself. By donating it opens up your heart. And frees your mind of people thinking why you haven’t been benevolent. Maybe the food will taste better. Sleep will be a lot easy. And the weight on your shoulders will be lighter. What’s important is that people, fans and your former school will look at your in a favorable light.

I’m telling you to take that ride out here and bring a couple of suitcases of cash. It not so much of this writer is begging on behalf of the UH, I just think that when you take this journey in life showing as much afforded goodwill on to others is good thing…and it reflects highly of you as a person. And your family.

Vicariously, most of us only can dream what it’s like to be in positions to bring smiles onto others on such a big scale, like how we saw the Ching family donating. And the impression I feel is that they’re genuinely happy to make others happy. Maybe you will, too. And if money can’t buy happiness wouldn’t donating back to the UH spark the happiness in you? And conversely by being ignoring of your former school, wouldn’t you be planting seeds of malevolence in your mind?

And the old adage of how doing good onto others brings back goodness to you ten fold is something to think about.

    Florida Ted,

your: #156, bout what people mean and say where you live now and what people mean and say in Hawaii; When I 1st moved to Texas from Hawaii-via-California, I got into a discussion with a resident here and she started talkin and then uttered the common term used in these parts which I only heard watching westerns, and I thought it was used to express how people in these parts spoke in by gone years…..anyways, she used the term, “you reckon,” and I had to take a double take on that, and asked what she said, and she repeated herself, and sure as shootin, I bust out laughing cause it seemed so unsual to hear that term, coming from Hawaii.

  181. FloridaTed May 31, 2008 11:40 am

I’ve noticed that ‘reckon’, ‘over yonder’ etc. is still widely used all over the south.

Did anyone catch the Colt Brennan interview on the Sports Animals show yesterday? I missed it. I did catch a little of their Davone Bess interview though. Sounds like Davone is doing well, but he says he’d like to do better. He said that the “reason” for the lack of “conditioning” at the start of mini-camp (as reported by Sparano) was a combination of all the rookies being thrown into full-on drills or whatever from the start, along with there being no vets at camp so that he had to take extra reps. Davone also said that it was hard adjusting to other QBs (though it sounds like he’s still catching everything like always).

Wouldn’t it be great if one day, Brennan and any of the Fab Four receivers were on the same NFL team…

  184. Da Punchbowl Kid May 31, 2008 12:31 pm

Ok. His name is Steele Gantz. (And we liked Colt Brennan for a name.) He looks like an athlete. Please keep us updated, Mr. Tsai. Imagine a play in a future Warrior game, “Steele Gantz to Jasper Jett for the 75 yard TD pass.” Those names, hard to beat I tell ya.

BTW, Tsai. Pictures you took to go with a post you wrote. Brilliant. You’re a machine, ya know that? A machine!

  185. disgusted May 31, 2008 12:58 pm

If you believe that the stadium authority will not increase the parking fees to make up the loss of the 1,000 parking stalls to UH, you are being naive. Donovan’s plan is better because those season ticket holders who can afford to pay the premium prices for football tickets, they would be willing to pay an additional $100 for a premium parkiing. This way, more premium tickets will be sold.

  186. wafan May 31, 2008 1:21 pm

I am so sad to hear about the passing of the young adult. The permanent solution does not fit the temporary set back. Too bad someone, anyone, did not recognize the changes in behavior. 194. Garret May 31, 2008 2:55 pm

    Esme,

You should be able to download David Cook’s songs legitimately soon…he’s going to set a record tomorrow for having *11* songs enter the Billboard chart and 14 songs jump on the download chart.

Season seven “American Idol” champion David Cook will set a record for debut entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs tomorrow as 11 titles enter the former, while 14 songs jump on the download tally. The onslaught is led by a No. 3 Hot 100 start for his original recording “The Time of My Life,” which shifts 236,000 downloads to easily take the No. 1 spot on Hot Digital Songs.

“Idol” runner-up David Archuleta lands three songs on both charts, led by his cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” (No. 36 Hot 100, No. 16 on Hot Digital Songs, 71,000).

Cook’s takeover of the Hot 100 shatters the mark for debuts set by Miley Cyrus (as Hannah Montana) in the Nov. 11, 2006, issue, when she placed six new titles on the list. The 11 songs on the chart are the most in a week by any artist in the Nielsen Music era, which began in December 1991 when the chart converted to Nielsen BDS and Nielsen SoundScan data.

The 14 tracks on Hot Digital Songs also gives Cook a record for debuts and total songs on that three-year-old chart, besting Hannah Montana’s total output (8) on the Nov. 11, 2006 chart, and Bon Jovi’s six debuts in the May 19, 2007, issue.

Thanks to sj-macro and myki for taking me to and from Nancy’s today, and for treating me. Although I did sneak some money into his backpack. 😀

BTW, did you know that chocolate moose droppings taste like almonds? 😉

It was really great to meet Pauoa Boy and his family. Those kids are cute rascals, yeah? 🙂

  213. Hanalei May 31, 2008 4:05 pm

Bungahead1 writes in Warrior Sports Network.com

Time for K. Mark to speak up. . . .

. . . .and answer the following questions:

    1. Did you attend the Sugar Bowl?

    2. Did you stand in line to buy tickest with everyone else at Stan Sheriff Center??

    3. What section of the SuperDome did you sit in for the Sugar Bowl????

    4. If you didn’t stand in line with the masses (if you did, sorry, I apologize), how did you get your tickets??? From who?? Tell, please. . . .

    5. If you went on one of the local travel agencies’ packages, how much did you pay???

Does someone know the answers to these questions? Maybe someone should email him. What do you think???

  214. gigi-hawaii © May 31, 2008 4:09 pm

so, that’s what you ate? just moose droppings? lol

  215. Jason May 31, 2008 4:12 pm

Corned beef hash, two scrambled eggs, and a hash brown for breakfast; grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. The chocolate moose droppings were a gift, which they brought from Canada.

chocolate covered almonds, that’s what they are.

  218. g-nalo May 31, 2008 4:25 pm

    Aloha Stadium would receive $294,000 (7,000 stalls x $6 x 7 home games).

sounds good, IMO both sides are being considered fairly. if adjustments are necessary later on, then shouldn’t be a big deal?

oh….i enjoyed the Wessai today, thanks to all the peeps in attendance.

  219. Jason May 31, 2008 5:04 pm

Did everyone eat too much today, decided to take a nap?

Who is K. Mark? Went through the Athletic Department Directory and couldn’t find the name listed.

  226. Ralph May 31, 2008 5:14 pm

I like g’nalo’s position except I would prefer a 50 – 50 split on the other stalls..afterall, UH is a state institution and it should have received revenues in the past..Giving up revenues from the 1000 stalls shouldn’t be a hardship on the Stadium Authority…

  227. bighilofan2 May 31, 2008 5:21 pm

    ******

Returning to Title IX: Shouldn’t the issue be phrased as working towards increasing scholarships & other forms of financial aid rather than just shifting them around.

Incidentally, Hawai`i should be proud of its progress in meeting Title IX goals compared to other public & private colleges & universities. Remember the intense discussion a few months back about Carl Clapp’s time at St Mary’s?

One of the interesting facts dug up in trying to get the complete picture of what happened before & during his tenure as Athletic Director was that the school was under intense pressure by both California and federal education officials to start making progress in implementing Title IX. As late as 2003, it was way, way behind the curve. One of the reasons given for dissolving the football program was to expand the school’s basic support for women’s intercollegiate sports.

Despite the major flak I got from some people when I raised the issue earlier, I still think that all out-of -state players in all sports, the cheerleading squad, and the band should pay in-state tuition rates. Other students in work-study programs get their tuition as part of their compensation package.

If they cannot get a scholarship, then they should be able to pay in-state tuition rates.

Remember, these talented young adults spend over a hundred hours each month preparing themselves physically, professionally & psychologically to provide a service to both the University and the larger communities. – all on top of their academic studies.

As a recipient of two academic fellowships back in the day, I would never have been able to afford to attend graduate school without them. BUT, it was understood by all recipients that we were expected to give back to the local community by working 20 hours a week in return for receiving the benefits. For me, it was providing tutoring services including student athletes and working as a research intern at the Legislature & in Washington, DC. Both later led to paid positions.

If these students today play or perform on behalf of the school, they should all receive the same level of benefits. That could be defined either as scholarships or as in-state tuition charges.

Even the most pointy-headed intalleckshuals in their ivory tower campus cubbyholes who would never step into the Stan Sheriff Center, let alone drive out to Aloha Stadium in their hybrids, would be hard-pressed to argue against leveling the playing field financially.

Remember too that traditionally UH has drawn upon young adults – especially males – who are trying to get out of the Poverty Pit which has swallowed up so many of their peers. We need to help them succeed in getting a good education & not place barriers in front of them.

Several weeks ago, there was a story about a men’s volleyball player who is going to forego his final playing year to be the team manager in order to stay in school to finish his degree. Sorry – I cannot remember for sure his name – but that should not happen. Stephen – how about a followup story on him.

Mahalo. – and back to bed until tomorrow am after another dish of ice cream.

Hope everyone has had a pleasant Saturday so far.

  233. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 31, 2008 5:39 pm

Okay – here is the story about legislators and the Sugar Bowl.

Back in early January, I asked both Colleen Hanabusa and Calvin Say if any legislators attended the Sugar Bowl representing the Legislature and getting freebies – as opposed to paying their own way.

Both said that a memo went out in December that no one could take anything from the University without paying for it. Now, I don’t know about standing in lines, but Mark is a season ticket holder so I assume that he, like several thousand others, got first dibs on buying tickets.

If people were planning to attend – even paying their own way – they were asked to let the leadership in either the House & Senate know in advance.

Sen. Norman Sakamotom, Chair of the Education Committee, specifically told me last weekend that he did not go to the game even on his own dime for fear that someone might think he was getting something for nothing.

Mark did attend the Sugar Bowl, but he was traveling as a supporter and not as a legislator. I assume he went on a separate flight because he was using the travel opportunity to deal with a variety of personal and professional matters after the game.

If anyone has concerns, all you have to do is pick up the phone and call him at 586-8455.

BHF2 – I agree with you that Mark Takai is a great friend of the entire University of Hawai`i System; however, I have to agree with the leadership in this instance that legislators should not take any freebies. We can honor him in other ways such as making him a guest of honor at one of the T-Gates.

Okay – now I’m heading off to bed.

ST…Thanks for the answer. Mike W. looks beefed up and sculpted.

Hanalei…I think I missed something. Did Mark T. do something inappropriate to warrant having to answer those questions?

I remember Mark T. being the ASUH president when I was an undergrad. I thought he was a great advocate of the student body and representative of the school. So far, he seems to be a very loyal alumni and really looking out for the best interest of the University.

  236. Garret May 31, 2008 5:48 pm

    WassupDoc,

Please do not consider this flak, but what you are suggesting (letting walk-ons pay in-state tuition rates) is an NCAA violation. I explained this the last time you suggested it and the rules governing athletes are clear. Students in work-study are not governed by the NCAA, but athletes are.

The cheerleaders and band are a different story, as there are no rules against that. However, if the cost is charged to the Athletic Department for the difference between in-state and out-of-state rates then it would be a burden they cannot afford. If the University would pass a rule that would have the University absorb the cost then it would be affordable for Athletics…but then you would have others asking for a similar deal.

I hope that you feel better soon.

  237. Garret May 31, 2008 5:51 pm

Fresno is close to a 3-year deal with Colorado, with 2 games in Boulder.

Fresno State could start a three-game football series with Colorado in 2011 if things go as planned.

Officials from both schools confirmed Friday they have an agreement in place, but said the contracts have not been signed.

Fresno State athletic director Thomas Boeh said the contracts could be signed “in a matter of weeks.”

The Bulldogs and Buffaloes have agreed to begin their series in 2011 in Boulder. The series will then come to Fresno in 2012 and return to Boulder in 2013.

Fresno State coach Pat Hill reportedly initiated the talks.

Possibly helping the series get started is the coaching history of Colorado’s Dan Hawkins. He coached against Hill at Boise State for five seasons from 2000 to 2005, going 53-11.

“Pat Hill was engaged and some of our administrators and our people [were engaged],” Boeh said. “Usually it’s important for both coaches to be supportive of a deal before it happens. With Pat and Dan knowing each other, well that helped a great deal.”

To support Garret’s #236, excerpts from NCAA manual. Click on the link for the entire 453 page document. Of course, the doc is always entitled to her opinion.

2.13 THE PRINCIPLE GOVERNING FINANCIAL AID [*]
A student-athlete may receive athletically related financial aid administered by the institution without violating the principle of amateurism, provided the amount does not exceed the cost of education authorized by the Association; however, such aid as defined by the Association shall not exceed the cost of attendance as published by each institution. Any other financial assistance, except that received from one upon whom the student-athlete is naturally or legally dependent, shall be prohibited unless specifically authorized by the Association.

16.01.1 Eligibility Effect of Violation. A student-athlete shall not receive any extra benefit. Receipt by a student-athlete of an award, benefit or expense allowance not authorized by NCAA legislation renders the student-athlete ineligible for athletics competition in the sport for which the improper award, benefit or expense was received. If the student-athlete receives an extra benefit not authorized by NCAA legislation, the individual is ineligible in all sports.

16.02.3 Extra Benefit. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability. I would assume that a lot of out of state walkon’s get WUE rates on tuition and that is cheaper than a lot of schools. A California student paying WUE rates at UH is still cheaper than any school in the Pac-10. WUE requires good grades but it is only 150% of in state tuition.

What irks me are some of the comments I read about Michelle Wie.

While the German Open is not exactly one of the top tournaments, it does have about half a million in prize money – which is half a million more than the Ryder Club.

If Ms Yang did not have such a sensational round but only maintained her average, Michelle would be only 2 strokes behind.

A minus 9 is nothing to laugh at.

I don’t play but many of my golfer friends are lucky if they can break 150!

Went out to dinner tonight. One, or more, of the people sitting at the table behind me kept farting. Not particularly loud, but juicy ones that could have peeled the paint off the walls. Worse, there was not a single open table to which to move. It was bad enough the buffet line was close-by and there was open food.

I kept standing up to take a look at the buffet line at the opposite side of the restaurant. Had to be the least I have ever eaten at dinner.

I sure hope that person feels better soon!

  252. I Believe May 31, 2008 7:53 pm

wafan—ah…the sound of reason…well, in all honestly, the melodious baritone can get squeeky sometimes…but I think we discussed this…as teachers, the silent stink eye, or the silent “what the heck is going on? I am so disappointed in you” look is often (if not always) much more effective….but my ‘kids’ (my adult ‘children’), when they were in elem school, used to tell me that they hated that I was a teacher because they thought I used all my patience on my kids at school…and they would tell me that those kids were not really my kids…and that THEY were really my kids (like I didn’t know to whom I gave birth? like they deserved special treatment or something?)! HA! I still think that is hilarious…and I would tell them as lovingly as I could that I didn’t know how all of my kids at school were raised, and so I had to sometimes give them more chances than I would give my real kids, because I knew how my real kids were raised and therefore I did not need to, for instance, ask them more than once to put away their laundry- because they knew better…

Not coming back to CA until 6/25 and hope to make it a short and sweet trip- am still playing catch up from last trip and it’s very, very tiring! Would like to come back and visit OR and WA when it is not so darn cold and snowing where ‘it never snows’!

  253. Hanalei May 31, 2008 7:55 pm

    Hoohiki:

No problem with Takai. I just read the blog from the other site and posted it here. Bungahead1 says that Takai went to the Sugar Bowl on the University’s dime. If that’s true, then I have a problem with that. But, if it’s not true, then Bungahead1 needs to apologize.

The problem is that no one knows who UH paid for. Hope Ferd gets the entire list, including all those who paid UH back.

  254. Jason May 31, 2008 7:56 pm

WassupDoc: I forgot to mention this earlier. If you want a recommendation for a good Web host, try PolurNet Communications. My friend uses them, and she likes them so much that I decided to use them for my church Web site too. Prices are reasonable; although I’m not sure how much space and bandwidth you need for your sites. You might want to check out their site, and if you have questions you can always e-mail me. (And yeah, get a free e-mail acct, even as a backup.) I hope things start to improve for you. And thanks again for the present; you really didn’t have to.

  255. A-House May 31, 2008 7:57 pm

    K Mark Takai:

I believe he stated earlier that he “paid his own way” to the Sugr Bowl for he and his wife.

    Stadium parking:

The extra 1,000 spaces, if I heard Jim D correctly, will be offered to those season ticket holder who pay $400 or more in “premium seat fees”; it’s not another/extra $400 payment.

    Tom Mui:

Like your take on Michele Wie’s media problem – I have always objected to beat writers or commentators who “rag” on her for missing putts, but say nothing when other top players miss short putts or at worst glance over it and move on.

I would prefer that they track all players who made or missed putts for the 18 holes or for the tournament and see what the actual results were.

  256. Jason May 31, 2008 7:58 pm

Pauoa Boy: I want to send you the picture that I took of you and your family. E-mail me at jnagaoka (at) hawaii.rr.com, and I’ll send it to you.

  257. Garret May 31, 2008 8:02 pm

    Hanalei,

From what I’ve read, bungahead1 owes Rep. Takai an apology. Why he would make such an assumption and then spread it on an open forum confuses me. Rep. Takai said quite some time ago that he paid his own way and the Legislature made it clear before the Sugar Bowl that none of them would be accepting UH money for their trip. Plus, he had business in LA after the Sugar Bowl so he clearly was not on UH’s plane.

  258. I Believe May 31, 2008 8:03 pm

    wafan….omg….tmi…really!

FL Ted- I agree! So…let’s all kokua together…makes the load lighter and makes it much more fun!

RE: directions- I have a hard time while in the mainland with the N-S-E-W thing- can’t people just tell you right or left? It’s not like I can see the ocean most of the time to KNOW where west is (sun sets in the west)…but, conversely, I know mainland people sometimes have hard time with our mauka, makai (although most times you can see the kai!) and leeward and windward (although the hint of wind in windward is kind of obvious to me)…

The other thing about freeways (in CA) at least is that the final destination is often used to identify the freeway, but if you are not going to the final destination and don’t even know where that place is, or what is in-between, you sometimes have little panic attacks when making lane changes…and lots of second guessing of yourself…I made it fine to the CC in Orange County, but totally screwed up on the way home as I thought I could just reverse the directions…couldn’t!

  259. Garret May 31, 2008 8:05 pm

I really like how Houston’s coach lists RGM among their key people that they are missing due to injury. I do hope that RGM is able to practice soon, and that he’s fully healthy (or at least close enough to recovered) to practice full-speed without being hampered by injury.

Running back Darius Walker has missed a few of the days this week with an ankle injury. That doesn’t bode well for a player in one of the most heated battles for a roster spot. Chester Pitts, Ryan Grice-Mullen, Jordan Black and Brandon Frye have also been sidelined with injuries.

Ahman Green returned to practice Friday after missing the previous two days because of food poisoning.

“Ahman was back working,” Kubiak said. “Darius missed again today. I think we should get a few of these guys back Tuesday. About four guys will come back. I’m hoping Chester, Darius Walter, Grice-Mullen – and there’s one more I’ll think of here in a second. We’re going to get a few of these guys back, but other than that we’re fine.”

  260. Jason May 31, 2008 8:06 pm

    WUD . . .

You have hit a bad stretch of road. Once past this portion things will get better. Hopefully, you will get through this phase quickly!

Thank you for the information — good stuff as always.

I do not see how the UH, or any university for that matter, can give in-state tuition to only the athletes. That would be discrimination to those out-of-state students who do not play any sports. Even if they are putting in a lot of time with their school work, community, and sports consider there are others who are not in sports but put in as much time for their school work, and community.

I like the idea, though. And agree something should be done. Unfortunately (?), it has to be done within the rules and regulations of the NCAA.

  262. Garret May 31, 2008 8:08 pm

Interesting that Randy Moss is learning from Wes Welker.

One part of the story speaks to how far Wes Welker has come in his NFL career. Another highlights how Randy Moss, entering his 11th season, remains in dogged pursuit of excellence.

    *

What ties it all together is a soccer ball.

The story goes something like this: Over the course of his remarkable 112-catch season last year, Welker added a distinguished admirer to what has become a growing legion of boosters – Moss. The two were naturally spending a lot of time together as Patriots receivers, and it wasn’t long before Moss started chatting up Welker on some of the finer points of his smooth route-running.

How do you get in and out of your cuts so efficiently while running full speed? What helps you find those creases in tight spaces, which is such a key in the NFL passing game these days? Tell me more about your footwork.

Welker shared with Moss that he believed his background in soccer was a big part of it.

Welker still keeps a soccer ball close by, and regularly uses it as part of his football training. He juggles it between his feet, not allowing it to touch the ground. Sometimes it’s the simple skill of possessing the ball, on the ground, with the bottom of his feet. Or he’ll dribble it between his feet as he surges up and down the field, focusing on short, quick cuts.

“I really feel that it’s helped with my footwork, getting in and out of breaks, and it seems like I can take a bunch of little steps in a very quick amount of time,” Welker said yesterday during a break from the Patriots’ passing camp at Gillette Stadium.

“Your feet get put in some awkward positions in football, but I’m sort of used to that from playing soccer, from moving the ball around. I definitely think that’s a big part of what has made me successful in the NFL.”

Moss agrees. So impressed was he with what he saw from Welker last season, he’s added his own soccer-specific drills to his training this offseason in Florida.

Just the fact that Moss approached him was sort of a can’t-believe-this moment for the 27-year-old Welker, who entered the league as a rookie free agent in 2004 and took a long, obstacle-filled road to become one of the NFL’s best pass-catchers. Moss, on the other hand, was a first-round draft choice in 1998 who now has six Pro Bowls on his résumé.

“I was talking to my parents about it and I told them, ‘This is crazy – Randy is asking me about soccer so he can use it to make him better. We’re talking about one of the best receivers in the NFL, and he’s asking me?’ ” recalled Welker, who will be honored in Orlando, Fla., this weekend with the 2008 Pop Warner Inspiration to Youth Award.

Pomai- Re: 177- the makers of pa’akai NEVER sell their salt- it is given in recognition of from where it comes-

I hope that Colt and the dreadheads and all the other UH grads who are playing sports professionally will follow the example of the wonderful Ashley Lelie- who almost immediately gave back to UH (in honor of his experiences here and I believe in recognition of the coaching staff) once he got into pro basketball- what a shaka guy!

  265. Mike Wedge May 31, 2008 8:17 pm

    Great story, Garrett

  266. wafan May 31, 2008 8:18 pm

    IB . . .

Nah. Just have to get used to things here. When I first moved here it was a bit confusing especially the part about not knowing what was where or in-between.

Generaly, I-5 runs North and South except in a few places where it really runs East-West just because of the layout. That really confused me when I first moved here. Having the sun rise in the “North” simply because the highway was really running East-West for a short distance. Weird.

Sorry for the TMI. I was alone here. By the way, it was not me. It really was the people/person sitting at the table behind me. HA!

  267. I Believe May 31, 2008 8:18 pm

wafan- public HS’s (Waimea, Kaua’i, and Kapa’a) had grad ceremonies on Friday night- not so sure of the ceremonies for the private schools (Island, Kula, Kahili Adventist and Kaua’i Christian Academy) – maybe tonight?

  268. Jason May 31, 2008 8:19 pm

I Believe: You mean Anthony Carter?

  269. I Believe May 31, 2008 8:21 pm

wafan….warfan…wafart…sure it was…it was also probably the dog under the table…have you ever heard that joke? pretty funny!

your add’l comment about the I-5 supports my point exactly! then, there is also pacfic coast…which I think might be a blvd…but I kept calling it HWY cuz in CA it’s a big deal HWY and well known…not so much in WA when it is actually a Blvd (blvd- right?)

  270. I Believe May 31, 2008 8:23 pm

    Jason…Anthony Carter? Not Ashley?

  271. Stretch May 31, 2008 8:26 pm

With the comments made the past 2 days, it appears that an apology is in order.

    May 30th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Regarding my last comment in the blockquote – details about today’s last-minute T-Gathering are not posted on SteveM’s website, the information has not been released here on the blog, and I’ve not gotten back a response to e-mails sent last night and earlier this morning. Since it seems to be a BIO private event, the first half does not hold.

    May 31st, 2008 at 1:55 am
Then on Tuesday, our e-mail/website hosting service went into a major meltdown causing all sorts of chaos which we’re still trying to straighten out. We have five business websites plus our personal e-mail addresses so free hosting services are not an option .Thus when things go wrong, they go wrong bigtime. We’ll be getting a credit on our next bill, however.

  272. wafan May 31, 2008 8:27 pm

    IB . . .

Thanks! Just curious as to the graduations. Out here the early ones are going to be in another week and a half. Our seniors will be released on the unsuspecting public on June 10th. Seniors in surrounding districts will escape no later than two weeks from now.

Another 14 wake ups to go! Whoo-hoo!!!

  273. Jason May 31, 2008 8:32 pm

I Believe: You said pro basketball. And I know AC’s donated to UH. Ash wasn’t on the list that Stephen gave a while ago.

  274. Koauka May 31, 2008 8:34 pm

No can believe, people just like make trouble. Why?

  275. wafan May 31, 2008 8:35 pm

    Stretch . . .

I use the 2-hour mark as the deliniation point. Under 2-hours is a nap. Over 2-hours is a sleep. Have not figured out what passed out is. HA!

Must have been a great CC since it moved all of your blood to your abdomen and left you absolutely helpless and, no doubt, in a vulnerable unconcious state. Hopefully, nothing untoward occurred during that time!

  276. Koauka May 31, 2008 8:37 pm

I believe Ashely donated the football scoreboard on the John Velasco Field of Radford High School.

  277. wafan May 31, 2008 8:39 pm

    IB . . .

HA! The dog under the table. No. No dog under the table. Hey, wait a minute . . . it was a Chinese restaurant. There was not a single dog or cat around. Whoa. Nah. Cannot be. Could it?

  278. Jason May 31, 2008 8:45 pm

Koauka: You didn’t say “Radford” with enough disdain. C’mon, they are our rivals. It’s Radford. 👿

  279. wafan May 31, 2008 8:46 pm

    IB . . .

The Pacific Coast Highway is really Highway 101 as it is known up here in Washington. I have driven it up here and part of Oregon and it is just a two lane road with lots of twists and turns, and with some of the most beautiful scenery! I think in California Hwy 101 was widened into a 4+ lane highway in some of the bigger towns/cities. I kind of like the smaller and quieter places — especially the wooded areas.

  280. Stretch May 31, 2008 8:52 pm

    May 30th, 2008 at 11:58 am
SteveM: As of two minutes ago, I did not receive any e-mail from you or anyone else about today’s event. I didn’t mention names on purpose because our e-mail and website hosting service – ValueWeb through Costco – has been inconsistent at best since Tuesday.

If you sent something which I don’t receive within 24 hours, it should bounce back to you as have other people’s sent e-mails over the past four days have done.

Some e-mails are delivered without any problems and others bounce around in the ether for up to 24 hours and others are immediately rejected. I have no way of predicting which ones will fall into the the last two categories.

If you are going to insinuate something then find out it’s not correct, most people will apoligize for their error.

  281. Koauka May 31, 2008 8:57 pm

Be nice Jason, we are all adults now.

Plus the principal of Radford is a good mentor and friend of mine.

Promised to say good things about his school.

When he retires, well, that’s a different story.

Back in the day, a friend had the opportunity to transfer to Moanalua because he lived in Salt Lake. After his freshman year, I asked him if he is gonna change schools. Nope, because MOHS has junk athletic teams.

But he always had the nerve to ask me to introduce him to Moanalua girls.

Gosh, what an idiot. And that’s why he has a Radford HS diploma.

  282. I Believe May 31, 2008 8:59 pm

Jason- well, forgive me…I have always meant to write a thank you note, so I will write one to AC now…you referred to a list ST posted…could you share date or go and snag it and re-post?

wafan- did you see my earlier post asking if any mainland ‘guys’ knew of Jr. FF Programs in your area? Could you ask your kids? They would be the age grp – mainland tends to serve 14-20 if they are Explorer/Learning for Life Programs…thanks

Also, perhaps ‘talked’ about ad nauseum when it happened, but what happened to the now ‘old’ silver road uniforms? Could they be auctioned or donated to a deserving school?

  283. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:03 pm

Koauka- mahalo…did Mr. Williams used to be the principal of Radford?

Also, is it just me or does anyone else feel a little bad about Cooke field…I am totally stoked about the Ching donation and grateful for their generosity…and certainly support something being named after them (him), but does that mean the end of Cooke field…is Cooke field being swallowed up by Ching?

  284. Koauka May 31, 2008 9:09 pm

    I Believe:

The principal of Radford HS is Robert Stevens. Not certain of Mr. Williams.

The UH administration, according to JD, asked the Cooke family persmission to rename the complex, and the family agreed.

  285. slenzi May 31, 2008 9:14 pm

Aloha Garrett! RE Randy Moss learns from Wes Welker . . . sounds exactly like what gave Chad Owens an edge in route running. Too bad Chad never get chance receiving with Jags. Maybe Chad will shake the fumble-rusky issues in the punt return business with the Colorado Crush.

  286. Jason May 31, 2008 9:15 pm

    Also, #160 and 161.

  287. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:32 pm

Jason- mahalo- wow- such a small grp when there have been many more who have made it to the pro level…and then there are those like Rainbow Cliff…we have had discussions about this…but, on the bright side, thank goodness for those who have remembered from where they came (just wish there were more!)

ey- does your tutorial still work with this new format?

  288. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:35 pm

Koauka- thanks for follow-up- glad the Cooke family was asked about renaming, but (and maybe just me) seems kind of tacky…once something is named should it not be pretty much forever…and what was the family supposed to say? Kinda hard to say anything but yes when asked such a question….

  289. Jason May 31, 2008 9:40 pm

I updated my tutorial not too long ago, take a look.

  290. I Believe May 31, 2008 9:40 pm

g’night folks…gotta go and get something for dinner!

wafan…didn’t mean that no dogs or cats were around and so …. maybe…. just maybe…I was referring to that old joke about everything being blamed on the dog under the table….will try and remember the punch line and share…maybe then you will know if you have heard it (yes, I am one of THOSE- the ones who cannot remember the punch lines! I’ll ask my son- I think that was one of his favorite jokes)

  291. Koauka May 31, 2008 9:56 pm

I Beileve – I agree with you, but with the Cooke family’s permission, I guess it worked out.

Me, I would have left the Cooke name, like the “Cooke-Ching Multi-Purpose Athletic Field.” Or something like that.

  292. koakane™ May 31, 2008 10:03 pm

With talk of how the Boston’s teams appeared in 3 championships this year:

Fall of 2007: Redsox over the Colorado Rockies
February 3, 2008: Patriots lose to the Giants 17-14
Spring of 2008: Celtics facing Lakers starting June 6, 2008 in NBA finals

The sport’s trivia question is: In the history of all professional sports, which cities team had teams in four finals. ( The answer below, Philadelphia)

Spring of 1980: Flyers lose to Islanders in Stanley Cup Finals
Spring of 1980: Sixers lose to Lakers in NBA Finals
Fall of 1980: Phils win World Series over KC.
January of 1981: Eagles lose 27-10 to Raiders in Super Bowl

The 76’s led by Julius Erving fall short in 6 games to a then 20 year old Magic Johnson led Laker team
And the hockey team loses in 6 the Islanders.
Notes of interests of the Phils World Championship win -Steve Carlton wins two games, Pete Rose plays first base. And it was the first baseball championship for the Phils in 98 years.

    I Believe,

One note that probably won’t help you in driving on the mainland…

Interstate Freeways with odd numbers generally run north-south, even numbers run east-west.

The three digit ones eventually connect to the freeway referenced…105, 405, 605 connect at some point to I-5. 210 and 710 to I-10.

Of course if you get directions from long time southern Cal people…it’ll be like getting directions at home where you give the tourists names while they are hunting for numbers. Santa Monica Freeway, Long Beach Freeway, San Diego Freeway, Ventura Freeway, San Bernardino Freeway, etc…

its really well planned and tons of different stuff for them to do at each place. parents, lions club, bands, make up and hair people donate their expertise to make it a fun time. they choose the site to be at and just show at that site and time. it relieves parent from having to do it all night. like shift work bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

TG not at practice. It could be that he is in Arizona for summer but if he is in a heated battle for the starting QB, I would think he should be here trying to get ahead.

midori – you one smart girl, good point about ESPN and the choice of games.

chawan – his ear was screwed. how come it was like that??

  335. Stretch May 31, 2008 11:43 pm

If TG is thinking like that, it’s no good for the TEAM!!

  336. chawan_cut May 31, 2008 11:44 pm

    stretch,
it was cauliflowered before the match even started. i guess during training.
did you hear the anouncers call it the alien life form clinging to his head?
my friend said it was Quatto from Total Recall saying “Open your mind….. open your mind…..”

  337. al May 31, 2008 11:44 pm

d1…..hmmmmm. by next week they should all be here no? aren’t they also asked to take summer school, which is now funded by na koa?

  338. Stretch May 31, 2008 11:46 pm

chawan – i’ve never seen a cauliflower ear look so “soft”.

  339. LK May 31, 2008 11:46 pm

    Koakane,

Depending on the print time, we’re about 1/3 done, hope I get there by no later than 2:00 a.m. Probably won’t run in to you in that case.

I’m sure the kids and parents really appreciate all of the volunteer help (especially from those that do not have current graduates) that they receive for their special night.

    🙂

  340. chawan_cut May 31, 2008 11:48 pm

    stretch,
you’re right. it did look puffy. thats why i was like “pop it!” kinda gross.
the wec fight is so early tomorrow…

  341. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 11:50 pm

    uh oh. USU driving.

I hope UH holds them to no more than a…. say a 36 yd FG?

  342. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 11:51 pm

    Hoo boy.

    I hope UH can maybe….
run back the KO for a TD!

  343. Stretch May 31, 2008 11:53 pm

chawan – good thing it’s live at 3pm so I can’t read about the results before watching it.

d1 – you are scaring me with your tsaichic abilities!!

  344. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 11:54 pm

    al,

I think ur right about summer school.

My question would be knowing that the workouts will be in the afternoon, why would, say, a certain Sr. QB schedule a class then?

  345. d1shima [sez:] May 31, 2008 11:57 pm

    Stretch,

    Just lucky.

    Try again.

I hope UH can force a punt and then drive down with 7 of 8 plays being CB passes and score on a pass from, ummmm….about 22 yds out!

  346. koakane™ May 31, 2008 11:58 pm

LK you do the video of grad? You da guys that do that big group shot inside stadium before they get on bus? If so is that you on da ladder taking the pics? anodda question who at the HS you deal with one teacher known as Mike ( I know its a she, but dats what she goes by)

  347. Ralph May 31, 2008 11:58 pm

luckily he wasn’t fighting Tyson, he would have ate it

  348. Stretch May 31, 2008 11:59 pm

time for me to go sleep now. as exciting as this football game is, I think I can wait until tomorrow morning to get the final score.

  349. Stretch June 1, 2008 12:00 am

ralph – gee thanks, right before going to bed I get a visualization that can cause nightmares.

  350. midori7 June 1, 2008 12:00 am

looking forward to seeing the rebroadcasts from the other sports as well. always appreciated KFVE doing this. just gotta be patient for baseball, since it’ll be the last one.

    night all.

  351. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:05 am

time for me to go sleep now. as exciting as this football game is, I think I can wait until tomorrow morning to get the final score.

Gee, Stretch, with an attitude like that, do you expect to ever make it to watch UH play a BCS game?

  352. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:08 am

Gosh, I really miss Colt already.

  353. al June 1, 2008 12:08 am

    ralph….that was sick!

  354. al June 1, 2008 12:09 am

ralph….. i confess. i thought of the very same thing. sick guys we are.

  355. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:11 am

OK. So now that I won’t be having a midnight snack….

  356. SteveM June 1, 2008 12:13 am

Hi folks… everyone resting and having a quiet night? Peaches and I napped for a few hours today too…only thing at different times, so are both out of sync. Going to break out the Wii pinball soon… 🙂

  357. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:13 am

…at least nothing that resembles a cruciferous vegetable.

  358. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:26 am

Watching Colt in this game makes me really wonder about what some of the coaches were saying about what happened in the SB game. He is making a lot of plays by holding onto the ball a long time.

  359. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:30 am

    I think it’s a Touchdown.
    Anyone wanna bet?

  360. d1shima [sez:] June 1, 2008 12:36 am

    Alright.
I’ll take a cue from Stretch and read the final score on p. 65 of my Perfect Season book in the morning.

    Oyasuminasai…

  361. homey ® June 1, 2008 12:38 am

    Stretch – karma’s a biatch. 😆

  362. Ralph June 1, 2008 12:39 am

ok d1 make an assessment of the three returning o-linemen, what’s your take on their footwork, etc..

  363. Ralph June 1, 2008 12:40 am

homey, how come you couldn’t make it to lunch, we were close to Mililani

  364. homey ® June 1, 2008 12:44 am

  366. Barry Markowitz June 1, 2008 1:07 am

D1, yes I was there at the PIAA, I documented it, and I was impressed at how many kids who were there that are not high profile, but will be solid Div 1 or Div 1AA kids. Here is one for ST to sort out…a certain paid professional entertainer’s son, who I had heard had sent his Letter of Intent to Portland State (his mother said on the Jeff Portnoy Show, in April, that he was confirmed to play for PSU), told me directly that he will be playing for McMackin this Fall, not Glanville. Whats the real deal, ST?

  367. LK June 1, 2008 1:17 am

    Koakane,

Yes that was me on the ladder in the north end zone, lil’s (my son) was helping me.

We don’t do video professionally, just the occasional Youth League game of our nine year old.

I was a little late after crawling through traffic from Moanalua Road to Aloha (kinda reminded me of UH vs USC back in ’99). I guess HPD merged 4 lanes into 1 to help facilitate cars leaving the stadium after the ceremony.

Mike short for Margaret is indeed a teacher at PCHS, I think she handles Student Activities.

  368. Kekoa June 1, 2008 1:46 am

SteveM & Peaches ~ Missed you folks today at the Wessai CC, but then it dawned on me about the time and distance thing you once spoke of. Got it!

Good gathering, thank goodness others were there taking photos! You saw how hamajag mines was! Sheezsus…I gotta go take another Pho King photo class to get it right one day.

My shot selection got worser den dat at the party I jez came home from!…only not talking about da camera shoot!

  369. Kekoa June 1, 2008 1:47 am

Hey Big Hilo Paddle-Papa!…go make one paddle, two paddle…all da way to da swamp and save your kala to bet the outhouse on UH. Take no prisoners, drown ’em all in da swamp!
