Road Warriors

Head coach Norm Chow, defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer and defensive line coach Lewis Powell are on the mainland recruiting.

Chow, who is in California, has home visited scheduled.

Kaumeyer and Powell are in Seattle, but will be making their way to Northern California, Utah and Texas.

* * * * * *

Next year’s Mountain West dates are not finalized, but UH knows the league road games will be at UNLV, Nevada, San Jose State and New Mexico.

Each team is allowed to make one scheduling request. UH has asked the MWC to allow the Warriors to play a road game the weekend before their mid-Novemember road game against Navy. If approved, the Warriors will remain on the mainland between games, which would allow them to spend a couple of days touring Washington D.C.

Happy birthday to Joe Onosai.

I just hope it’s not the UNLV game before Navy. Only bad things been happening after the team stays in LV.

    Top ten. Good morning!

There are reports that San Jose State head coach Mike MacIntyre is being hired away by Colorado. Bad news for the Spartans and the MWC. Probably bad news for MacIntyre too, considering the fate of the past couple of coaches to take over at Colorado.

  7. Derek December 10, 2012 7:30 am

My guess is that the game before Navy will be either at San Jose or New Mexico, probably San Jose. That means MWC home games are against Fresno State, Colorado St., Utah State, and Air Force. Per prior arrangements we will not be playing Wyoming. So, the opponents will be:

    1)USC

    2)Oregon State

    3)Army

    4)UNLV

    5)Colorado State

    6)Nevada

    7)Fresno State

    8)New Mexico

    9)Utah State

    10)San Jose State

    11) Navy

    12)Air Force

    13)BYU

This is not in order of the dates, but you can see that it’s a pretty good schedule.

  46. Former UH Athlete December 10, 2012 9:37 am

Wow, tough schedule next year… The most of the easier MWC opponents are on the road.

Might be another tough year next season. UH will most definitely be improved, but the schedule doesn’t line up in their favor.

Early-early-early prediction for 2013 (+/- 1 win depending on how the MWC schedule lines up)

    Vs USC (LOSS)

    @ Oregon State (LOSS)

    Vs Air Force (WIN)

    @UNLV (WIN)

    @ Navy (LOSS)

    Vs Colorado State (WIN)

    @ Nevada (LOSS)

    Vs Fresno State (LOSS)

    @ New Mexico (WIN)

    Vs Utah State (WIN)

    @ San Jose State (LOSS)

    Vs Army (WIN)

    Vs BYU (LOSS)

    * Not sure if UH will play Wyoming or not (Probably a WIN)

    My early-early-early prediction for 2013: 6-7

Being the optimist: 7 wins if they get Wyoming instead of Fresno or if they beat all the Academies.

Being the pessimist: 4 wins, if they don’t win on road + lose unexpected home game.

jmxxxx ~ Bet wit SB was supposed to be a ‘friendly’ wager devoid of any monetary value. An over zealous grill team took the bet to a higher level by requiring the Cdr to dress in his white-out uni to grill all the meat should his team lose.

Then, at game time he would don a pink tutu and Make-up. Well, being the officer & gentleman that he is, he held up his end of the bet, and we should all admire the humility and class that he displayed.

#47 with an improved line and bigger arm at qb, navy is winnable. what about a new coaching staff at san jose?

is it an mwc rule that you skip the same team (wyoming) 2 years in a row?

  54. laulau head December 10, 2012 10:39 am

    Happy birthday Pastor Onosai!!!

  55. azwarrior22 December 10, 2012 11:05 am

#47 Former UH Athlete – you are probably cautiously pessimistic (i.s.o. optimistic) for predicting 7 wins. Here’s 3 reasons why will do better: 1. starts with the QB…I think Graham is lights out better than SS. 2. Presumably healthy; this past season was an injury plagued season. 3. Experience – our O-line and WRs will be better.

I’m going to drink the kool-ade and say optimistically we can win them all, realistically we’ll win 9/10 and pessimisticly, we’ll win 7.

  56. RedZone December 10, 2012 11:28 am

I remember coach Chow saying that Wiesehan was on the mainland recruting on the last call the coach show. Chris was visiting JCs and was to also be going to Pennsylvania which is why I was asking who are they recruiting in that state? I am assuming that olinemen would be on his list.

  57. 99club December 10, 2012 11:29 am

The previous schedule outlines didn’t have us playing Wyoming, but they also didn’t have us playing San Jose State. I’m wondering if the previous guidance has been ‘overcome by events.’ Also, it stands to reason that if UH knows what road games they will be playing then so do all the other teams in the league. I wonder who’s coming to Aloha?

  58. HawaiiMongoose December 10, 2012 11:39 am

I would be satisfied with 6-7 or 7-6 next season… ideally the latter since the Hawaii Bowl badly needs UH to play in the game.

  59. d1shima December 10, 2012 11:59 am

    Best wishes for Sen. Inouye.

  60. Former UH Athlete December 10, 2012 12:05 pm

#56, No disputing UH will be much better next season at several positions. QB will be vastly improved with Graham/Woosley/Zwahlen (if not on mission). RB will be very strong. LB corp will be young, but is very deep. DL commits Tua’au and Moala, will bolster the DL along with having a clean slate of health, which was the biggest problem UH had.

I’ve said multiple times that this year’s WR corp is the worst group of WRs UH has ever had. No speed, tons of dropped passes, and other than Stutz, they’re poor route runners. We’ll see if any of the new WR’s can provide a deep threat to stretch the defenses.

The entire OL comes back, so that by itself will be an improvement, but hopefully Chow can land a few upgrades.

All I’m saying is that the 2013 schedule probably won’t line up for UH to get 8 wins. 5 or 6 wins will show that UH is heading in the right direction. If people are expecting 7+ wins, I just think that’s being a little too optimistic because the bad MWC teams will be road games in 2013 and UH has always had issues on the road, regardless of how good/bad the opponent is.

I think the games @Navy, @New Mexico, vs Utah St, vs Air Force, and vs BYU (caz its Sr night & a revenge game) and are toss up games. For UH get to 8 wins, they would have to win all of the toss up games… USC, OSU, UNR, Fresno, SJSU will be losses…. UNLV, CSU, Army will be wins.

  61. Former UH Athlete December 10, 2012 12:14 pm

    #58

MWC Scheduling is a mess because of the teams coming and going. The usual rotation of home-home alternating will be thrown off as well as which 9th conference opponent that gets left off the schedule.

2013 MWC Teams: UH, SJSU, Air Force, CSU, New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming, Fresno, Reno, Utah St

That’s 10 teams total… but they only play 8 conference games, one MWC team will be left off the schedule each year (until there’s more re-alignment).

I don’t know why they can’t just play 9 MWC games so everybody plays everybody, but we have no control over that. Since the MWC is a mid-major conference, many teams need as many non-conference slots for their “money grab” road games vs BCS teams.

  64. Bowwar December 10, 2012 12:36 pm

I wonder if there’ll be any coaching changes on the Warrior football staff? It was quite obvious at times that we were outcoached a number of times this past year. I’m wondering if Chow is considering replacing Lee on the offensive side? Really, I think Chow should just settle on being Head Coach and hire a true Offensive Coordinator…Rolo?

  65. Visit Here December 10, 2012 12:48 pm

Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wished to mention that I have really loved surfing around your blog posts. After all I’ll be subscribing on your rss feed and I am hoping you write once more very soon!

  66. Former UH Athlete December 10, 2012 1:01 pm

#65 No not Rolo!!! He’s not a good OC. He got the position way too early and his playcalling was pretty poor while he was OC for UH. The shovel passes went away and he didn’t adjust playcalling based on how Moniz was playing. If Chang, Brennan, or Rolo himself were struggling during a game, JJ would always go back to screens and quick passes to get the QB back on rhythm. Rolo’s pistol goal line run game was atrocious… You can’t run dive plays without TE’s or extra OLinemen to extend the edge. DEs and OLBs were going untouched around the edge, and because the pistol RB is 8 yards deep, the defenders were getting to the RB before he got to the line.

Rolo didn’t exactly have a stellar season with UNR losing 4 of their last 5. UNR put up a ton of points vs UH, but that was because UH was seriously out gunned in the trenches, not because of playcalling. It’s still Chris Ault’s show, and Rolo is only there to develop the QBs. Rolo is merely a QB coach with the OC title.

Starting QB Fajardo only had a 7.5 yds/attempt average, which is nothing special… Fajardo actually averaged 7.8 yds/attempt last season, so his efficiency hasn’t improved since Rolo was hired. By comparison, Colin Kaepernick average 8.4 yds/attempt in 2010 in the same offense, and Colt Brennan averaged 8.5 yds/attempt in 2007 with 174 more pass attempts.

  67. Former UH Athlete December 10, 2012 1:33 pm

Wow, didn’t realize Fajardo is only a sophomore. Though he was older.

Also can someone explain the QB rating system? it’s ridiculous and in my opinion overrated! For me it’s all about 3rd down completion %, yards/att, TD/INT ratio and Attempt/INT ratio. Hard to compare option QBs vs run’n’shoot QBs.

Is the QB moving the offense in key situations? That’s the bottom line.

  68. Derek December 10, 2012 1:34 pm

Big bad Joe Mathis coming to town on Friday. 6’4″/255/4.69 4-star DE from Upland, Calif.

Hope he likes it in Hawaii. Definitely, he would be in the rotation as a true freshman. How would he like to play against USC and Oregon State in his very first college games of his career?

  71. gobows December 10, 2012 1:56 pm

#65 much like recruiting, it’s probably hard to get assistant coaches to come out to hawaii, especially if they have families. lee is here to fill a position (or in norm’s words “his eyes in the booth”) and draw a paycheck. jj did the same thing with mouse davis, mack had dick tomey.

coaching staff needs to learn how to make halftime adjustments. the coaches should forfeit their pay for what happened at air force.

Year 1 chow got a free pass. In year 2, the community will expect a winning season. For half a mil a year, we want a winning season. Period. One free year, then you better win the next year.

Yes, he got criticism in year 1, but that was expected. I hope he makes some serious adjustments in year 2. If he fails to make gametime adjustments next year like he did this year, we will be in for another long season.

Here is to wishing chow has learned a lot between the two seasons about making gametime adjustments and about playing the best players, not the favorites.

    Independent Thinker

How much did Hawaii pay for McMackin for each season? Was it worth the money for those seasos? Is $550,000 really a lot for a FBS level head coaching job? I know it’s hard but your really are the only the “Independent Thinker” thinking that season number 2 has to be a winning one for a Hawaii Warriors program that is pay a bargin basement price for a FBS Head Coaching job. We all would “like” to see a winning season next season, shoot we all would “love” for Hawaii to have a winning season and a bowl game next season. But the reality is when changing HC and the entire staff with changes to Offensive and Defensive systems with still having the recruits from Macks regime left over and bring in new recruits that are better fit, it takes time. Like 3-4 years. Not year 2?

Lets keep the expectations on a realistic level and if Norm Chow leads Hawaii to a bowl game which usually means a .500 or winning season next year, then great! If 4-8, 5-7 or 6-7 then it’s improvement over this 3-9 season. Year 3 is when we should expect a winning season or a bowl game invite. Hawaii is not breaking the bank paying for Norm Chow as Head Coach, don’t even need boosters to help cover the annual salary like when McMackin was head coach. No matter how you personally feel about whats going on, it’s not going to change the fact that it’s going to take time to make a real assessment on Norm Chow as head coach.

  83. kapakahi December 10, 2012 4:10 pm

2 local defensive players that the Warriors could use in coming seasons…..DL Titus Failauga & DE/OLB Ualesi Sale…..tripped to SDSU this past weekend….together with Aztec commit TE/DL Dakota Turner.

Hopefully Turner enjoyed his trip BUT wasn’t also playing “host” too……to convince Failauga and/or Sale to join him as an Aztec.

    #85,

The shocker and kinda not so much of a shocker at the same time is Stanford.

Ya’ll remember this story a few months back about University of Miami’s DISMAL attendance. Yes, the former national power Miami (not of Ohio).

san jose state, despite a very good year, they averaged only 10789. a drop of 41% from 2011.

kent state enjoyed an increase of 54% for a whopping average of 17880.

hawaii was down 6% with an average of 30031.

pac-12 was the only bcs conference to increase attendance.

Whew…another day of work, but before nap time…

Guessing we need a bye after Navy for SteveM cruise after game to Bahamas

According to SteveM’s Tsai-ko Cruiser News List

    * Cruise Bahamas day after UH-Navy 2013 game?

    (7-night, $439 inside $549 balcony)

auwe, that was last month’s news. Prices have crept up to $459 inside, $499 balcony. This is a large Carnival ship out of Baltimore and I think Carnival have a fare protection plan for those who book waaay early… anyway, check your favorite travel agent or site.

Just saying that if one is traveling all the way to the D.C./Baltimore area, 🙄 this is an interesting and extremely economical 7-nt vacation extender…add Tsai-kos who know each other and it’s a 7-night party! Just saying….

I will track this fare and the Alaska cruise possibilities out of Seattle after the UH-Oregon game in the 2013 Away Game>/b> logistics page when I post it. (not up yet–soon, even though the MWC sked not known yet).

    More blasted traffic heading Ewa.

Is it an accident THIS time? Just saw personalized police wehicle, blue lights a-shining pass by on the shoulder lane.

Driver’s license test should way, way, way more difficult. Renewals should be, too. And if you’re over the age of 70 . . . oh. A Grease better not say.

Some Hawaii drivers. The heck?!?!?!?! If you dunno how to drive — if in your heart you don’t how to drive — then don’t drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  93. Former UH Athlete December 10, 2012 6:19 pm

I’d say it’s fair to expect a winning season next year, but the schedule will make it tough. We’ll get a better idea of the progression of Chow’s 1st recruiting class during spring camp. We’ll see if the freshmen bulk up in the S&C program. That will be key for UH in the next few years. With so many underclassmen playing in 2012, the next few years worth of UH teams will be very experienced. So that will play to UH’s advantage come 2014-2015.

Very excited to see how Garcia-Williams and Merrell Jackson develop into year 2. They look like they could be stars. Can’t wait for Tua’au. I think he’s an immediate game changer based on the tape I’ve seen.

The big question marks for Chow’s recruiting the remainder of this offseason will be the OL and WR. UH desperately needs a deep threat to compliment Grahams big arm. In order for deep routes to happen, the OL must improve (and I think they will, with all 5 starters coming back plus the new additions).

UH loses virtually nobody significant to graduation (Falemalu is the only notable Sr this year). We still have to wait for what Edwards will do, but UH’s secondary talent is pretty good. We can already see that Chow has more recruiting areas than Mack had. Utah, Pacific Northwest, Florida were areas that Mack rarely got anybody from unless via transfer. This all points toward major improvement next season.

You can still never know how recruits will turn out but the 1st two classes from Chow are already shaping up to be improvements over Mack’s first two classes. Transfers are needed to fill holes but it;s the prep recruits that form the backbone of college rosters, because they are there for 4-5 years. Chow’s almost had as many freshmen play significant minutes than Mack had in four years. These freshmen will all grow and mature together. Leaders will develop and the lockerroom will rally behind it’s leaders. I think the lack of seniors played a big roll (in addition to the injuries) of why UH played so poorly at times.

Too much reliance on transfers will lead to major gaps in the class breakdown, like what UH had this year (only 15 Seniors of 100+ players). It’s very unusual for a college roster to have fewer than 18 in a junior or senior class.

    “Independent Thinker:

Year 1 chow got a free pass. In year 2, the community will expect a winning season. For half a mil a year, we want a winning season. Period. One free year, then you better win the next year.”

A half mill a year for a college coach is pathetic. We pay a half mill less than the last coach.

Almost every school in California pays more than that for their D1 coach and that state is in bad shape.

In Hawaii people concern themselves too much about what people get paid. My tax payer money goes to that…this whatever. Your tax payer dollar goes to much more things that cost more money.

Chow is working for free basically with for a school who still doesnt put soap in the mens showers or cant even have a decent locker room.

  95. Leron December 10, 2012 8:51 pm

Need help at WR….but funny how Chris Gant is overlooked. He had a few TDs this year, and was open on deep routes quite a few times…the ball was never delivered to him in the right place.

  96. kapakahi December 10, 2012 8:56 pm

    #96,

JMHO that the mutual trust between SS and Gant got better….but just never really click in all season.

  97. Mauiwarrior December 10, 2012 8:57 pm

Gant needs more balls thrown his way……he just has to be more consistent catching them, maybe taylor will help with a more timely delivery

    @95.

Couldn’t agree more….chow gets very little for the mess he inherited, give him at least four years, it’s kind of funny how our schedule is tough when our program is in shambles, but when we were good our schedule was weak…. All a matter of timing

  100. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 10, 2012 9:06 pm

Agreed that Chow should get at minimum 3 years. At that point, bowl bound should expected unless our OOC includes a murderers row of BCS schools like away games at Michigan and USC or something.
