Three request releases

Defensive back Mike Sellers, linebacker Kendrick Van Ackeren and receiver Chinedu Promise Amadi have requested releases.

The requests, which were made during exit interviews this week, enable them to enter transfer discussions with other schools.

Coach Norm Chow said the players would be welcomed back for the spring semester if they decide not to transfer. Scholarships are one-year arrangements that are subject to renewal at the end of each academic year.

In response to comments at the end of yesterday’s thread….

DL is a different matter from OL. The more physically matured bodies from the JC ranks….like an Isa’ako Sopoaga….are definitely needed at the DT position.

Agreed that definitely need more OL bodies, but not necessarily from JC ranks. Could just teach and develop the current OL bodies…..instead of just constantly “over” training them. No wonder LT Blake Muir lost 20 pounds of muscle over the season.

Loyd saw live game action at RT against BYU….and nothing since, while Loeffler broke his hand in Fall Camp….and ended up never seeing a live game snap all season. Afusia started and played almost the whole game against Colorado State until injuring an ankle. Shigematsu started at RT at the beginning of the season until getting hurt against BYU….then seeing only back-up duty behind Milovale at RT.

BTW while it would make all the world of sense to assign Uperesa to help out the OL, it’s simply not true. Exclusively the OL coach.

  17. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 7:01 am

    I like Mike Sellers.

Unfortunately, he’s at a crowded position.

John Hardy-Tuliau came on at the end.

Marrell Jackson is going to be a star.

Charles Clay became the third safety after Leroy Lutu was injured.

And I think Bubba Poueu-Luna can be a factor.

It’s interesting that Leaf, Sellers, Amadi, Van Ackeren and Hollowed are all part of the 2010 recruiting class.

  27. koakane ip5 December 7, 2012 7:11 am

    Steve,

know her mom, brother and all da uncles. last I saw her was when she was in middle school wanting to play vball.

  28. Annoddah Dave December 7, 2012 7:11 am

@#21, ST: I think that the Wong family is too tired to start up again. I believe that this drive-in is the last of its food places. Too many lunch wagons these days that provide a more contemporary taste sampling. Eat the Street is a good example.

  29. Old School Dave December 7, 2012 7:13 am

Sad to see Byron’s closing. Andy’s, KC (waffle hot dogs & ono ono shakes), Kaimuki Inn, the list goes on. On the other hand, running a restaurant isn’t an easy thing to do and can take its toll on the owner. Oh well, there’s still Rainbow Drive Inn.

  30. koakane ip5 December 7, 2012 7:15 am

    Stephen,

By any chance you privy to the talks going on between coach chow and those that are leaving?

Just wondering what the choices really are?

  31. Annoddah Dave December 7, 2012 7:18 am

@#29, Old School: You are correct, it is a tough business. Noticed that Japan style restaurants seem to have the fastest turnover. They pop up and a few months later they are gone. Remember Alex Drive-in in Kapahulu? There have been a slew of restaurants since at the same spot. Don’t forget W&M drive-in is still hanging on.

    Koakane

Saw Van Ackeren yesterday. He just wants to play. He didn’t play much after that CSU game.

His brother tried to walk on last year, was cut, but now goes to UH as just a regular student.

Brashton actually sent me two pictures. The first one had a beer sign in the background, which he must have photo-shoppped out.

If it were Heineken, I suppose that would generate the Coloma vote.

  36. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 7:40 am

In case anyone is wondering, Higgins is not going anywhere.

    Hey, I had to ask.

Comes in threes (3s), comes in threes (3s), comes in threes (3).

But, one is the loneliest number.

#31- Annnodah Dave: Good points. There was a Japanese restaurant called Katsu on Waialae that was only in biz for about 6-months, then closed. Before that, was Momomo. There’s another restaurant there now called Sakura. W & M is still an old standby, (gotta run into City Mill to buy something, though ;-). St. Louis Drive Inn, nearby, has also stood the test of time (they have a sashimi plate that is pretty good). They also have a “student’s special” there.

    Re: Byron’s.

OK, I get that they’re closing the building. But how come Byron’s can’t relocate?

Think the owner’s the same as the now defunct Chowder House at Ward Warehouse (which was replaced with a pretty decent ahi eatery). Chowder House seemed to be always packed when it was around. Food was delicious as were the prices. Dunno why they closed and/or couldn’t relocate either.

Anyway, with the demise of Twinkies (not “Twinks” 😉 ), and, ergo, the end of Byron’s fried Twinkie dessert, the proverbial writing seemed to be on the outdoor dining room wall.

Anyway, too many ningens named “Byron” on this island, so, just as well, running out of room and all.

Is there a Twink dessert? kev-1, would you know? Just joking. 🙂

#39 the japanese plate deluxe at st louis drive-inn: teri-beef, sashimi, mochiko chicken, rice, salad, and 2 pieces of shrimp tempura to make it a deluxe for under $10.

    #40 whats ningens?

  43. Annoddah Dave December 7, 2012 8:13 am

@#39, Old School: That site started off as Eastern Garden as part of Larry’s Air Conditioning, then Momomo, then Richo (Korean style Japanese), then Katsu, now Sakura (not part of Sakura Terrace on King St). I think I got it right. So has St. Louis Delicatessen and Fukuya. Don’t get me started, now all I’m thinking about is fuud!

  44. tommui December 7, 2012 8:17 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Best of luck to Mike Sellers, Kendrick Van Ackeren and Chinedu Promise Amadi! Thank you for being Warriors.

AL – where you today? You were posting up a storm yesterday around midnight!

  45. mikey December 7, 2012 8:28 am

    #43 Thanks AD

Use eat dim sum at Eastern Garden all the time.

Tried Momomo only once. And never had a chance to go Richo (infact when we tried; they were already closed) or Katsu but I better hurry and try Sakura before they close.

Always looking for new places to try.

Japanese for “man” or, in my bastardized colloquialism, “mens.”

Ningen” is a word in the Kikaida theme song, as a bit of trivia for us English speakers.

Anyone tried Karai Crab? Co-owned by Willow’s?

  53. mikey December 7, 2012 8:52 am

Tried the new crab place on 9th and Waialae didn’t think their Dungeness crab was all that great but their Pepper shimp was pretty good.

And don’t get corn they were soggy and frozen not fresh.

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid December 7, 2012 8:55 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Good luck to all of those players who are transferring. May they find happiness, playing time and above all, a good education.

    Rainbow Drive-In?

  59. kifi December 7, 2012 9:25 am

Rainbow Drive In wins. I’ll be here waiting for the news.

  60. Buffoman December 7, 2012 9:30 am

I heard someone is bringing back Holy pies to Oahu. Da butta…. I think the guys are going to open a Hawaii products place at the old Quiksliver place on Kapiolani across from the Convention Center.

Hot Holy pie and vanilla ice cream!

  61. Derek December 7, 2012 9:32 am

I hope Kendrick stays. He will only be a sophomore next season. He can play and will definitely be in the rotation. But, it’s up to him. Good luck.

  62. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 9:36 am

Thanks for the post on the GA posts.

That’s so strange UH has to post an opening for those jobs. Good thing they don’t have a search committee for recruits. Oh, wait, that’s what this blog is for.

  63. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 9:36 am

    Old School Dave:

Know what you mean about all of those name changes.

Wait, are we talking about restaurants or Koreamoku Street?

  64. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 9:38 am

Van Ackeren just completed his freshman year. I know he probably doesn’t want to redshirt again, which rules out an FBS school. And he probably could play right away at, say, Sacramento State. But c’mon, wouldn’t you rather be in Hawaii?

  65. Bowwar December 7, 2012 9:40 am

Awfully good players leaving the team…Hard to replace “in-kind”…I can understand some of the others leaving, but when you start to lose too much, you’ll have NO depth on your team.

I wonder how many kids opting to leave will it take for folks to question what’s going on with the football team and its coaching. I don’t recall a mass exodust in previous coaching changeovers that we’re seeing now.

  66. 3-Prong December 7, 2012 9:43 am

What is the best of the crab joints in town. Mrs is ono for crab. She doesnt like it with that cajun spice. Too many trips to NOLA I guess.

  67. tommui December 7, 2012 9:47 am

I was a bit surprised when I read the newsrelease (yesterday) that the AD might be selected today WITHOUT a press conference.

How does the UH intend to name the AD to an anxiously waiting public? Just put out a press release and hope someone like ST will try to find the guy and interview him.

Of course by the time our intrepid reporter locates the guy, he may be back in Ohio or California!

  68. kifi December 7, 2012 9:50 am

When Brian Kelly brought his Cincy team to Hawaii on 12-6-08, little did we know that he would be the next Notre Dame coach to take them to a National Championship game.

When the Star-Advertiser shared a picture with us of Manti Te’o watching a Notre Dame practice on that same sideline 15 days later, little did we know that Te’o would captain that Notre Dame team that Kelly would coach.

    Veddy Intadesting.

  70. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 9:51 am

    Kifi:

In hindsight, I’m not sure we were supposed to run that picture.

  71. A-House December 7, 2012 9:52 am

best tasting dungeness(sp) crab was in Alaska – before going fishing, we would drop nets and retrieve them before going back to the lodge – then an hour later it was on the table.

with the “red tide” still there, over 2 years now, we could not eat the “miso”

  72. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2012 9:52 am

I agree that the exodus will hurt depth.

Thing is, I don’t think players like to be known as “depth.”

    Players wanna play.

  73. kifi December 7, 2012 9:53 am

  75. mikey December 7, 2012 9:55 am

    Best crab I had:

Fook Yuen Seafood in McCully Shoppping Center just across the canal bridge from Waikiki. Great Cantonese seafood joint, with the requisite crappy service. Home of the famous $11 lobster special. The garlic crab legs are incredible.

Once I had a $5 Crab near Byron’s that was good can’t remember the name kinda dinky place.

  76. kev-1 December 7, 2012 9:57 am

    Chicken Grease #40,

Comedian today? I googled the word “twink.” If you are intending the same meaning, then the answer would be know, I don’t know if there is a twink dessert. But, I’m sure if you’re creative enough you could think of one.

  77. mikey December 7, 2012 9:58 am

    A-House I agree

Best I ate was at Ketchikan Alaska: It was SOooooo Sweeeet

    https://www.catchcrabs.com/store/

  78. mikey December 7, 2012 10:01 am

A-House: I asked for the miso part on crab but it came all cleaned and white meat only.

But it was the best I ever ate.

  79. Old School Dave December 7, 2012 10:06 am

Ran to Longs Moiliili the other day and saw Scott Harding who was chatting with a fan there. Very polite and humble “bloke.”

  80. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2012 10:13 am

    Alooooooooooha, Tsaikos!

  81. Old School Dave December 7, 2012 10:14 am

Regarding crustaceans, I once went to this place called the Crab Pot in Bellevue, Washington. They went the full 9 yards – full body apron, eating tools, food was thrown onto a large sheet of paper. Messy, but ono, good fun. I liked it, but the locals up there tell me that it’s an “ok” place.

  82. al December 7, 2012 10:22 am

mr. mui…I am here reading in between some deadlines.

I am thinking, too, about that rainbow drive inn mixed plate with the boneless chicken, mahi, and teriyaki beef gravy all over bowl of chili on the side. maybe a slush float?

  83. Warrior Dave December 7, 2012 10:24 am

I tried Crab Pot when my daughter was going to college there. Save your money…

Neat gimmick with the apron and wooden mallet to crack the crab but the crabs are all frozen. Once you’ve had fresh crabs like A-House and Mikey, cannot go back to frozen.

  84. al December 7, 2012 10:25 am

not worrying about depth since it opens up more scholarships to replenish the roster. we can bring in as many as 25 new guys next year.

the mid transfers and grey shirts could count towards this year.

  85. Warrior Dave December 7, 2012 10:25 am

    Wow Al,

So descriptive, makes me want to go get a Rainbow mixed plate NOW!

  86. al December 7, 2012 10:27 am

I can’t remember the name but it was “crab tour” in Alaska that ended with an all you could eat Dungeness crab meal with wine or beer.

  87. al December 7, 2012 10:28 am

    warrior Dave…you should.

  88. Former UH Athlete December 7, 2012 10:29 am

Sellers, Van Ackeran, and Amadi would be on the back end of the rotations next season. Their collective presence won’t be missed unless UH goes through mass injuries like this year.

Sellers is a good player, but unfortunately for him, Hardy-Tuliau and Jackson are better. Van Ackeran only played this year because of injuries and as freshmen Garcia-Williams, Williams, and Fonua develop, Van Ackeran would be pushed to 3rd/4th string MLB.

Amadi, wasn’t going to factor much in the future for UH.

I wish them all luck if they find schools to transfer to. The good news is that this opens up 3 more scholarships for Chow to get better talent. With so few seniors this year, there aren’t many scholarships to give out this recruiting class, so Chow needs to open a few spots where he can.

  89. al December 7, 2012 10:30 am

I wonder where diogenes snope is?

    I owe him a hamburger.

  90. 808Bowler December 7, 2012 10:34 am

My fav place to eat is Queen st drive in.

Funny thing is its not even close to Queen st.

    Uh special ono………..

so means more scholies for chows real 1st recruiting class?

  91. hawaiian December 7, 2012 10:34 am

    Mr. Tsai,

So who’s in town this weekend (recruits)? Heard there were supposed to be 6-7 of them.

  92. Abunai December 7, 2012 10:36 am

With all these guys transferring out. Does thatran UH have more scholarships to hand out? Any word on Dejon Allen coming in January?

  93. 3-Prong December 7, 2012 10:37 am

Yah, did the Crab Pot thing….ageed that is gimicky but enjoyed atmosphere while washing it down with the local brew. Have got to do the crabbing thing in Alaska or maybe Oregon. Oh well, maybe just gotta buy da big legs at Costco and make believe this weekend…… Hehe

  94. Former UH Athlete December 7, 2012 10:38 am

Hopefully Chow can land TE Bryce Fitzner from San Diego. His only other offer is SDSU and has an offer from UH. Fitzner is 6’7″ 245 and is a good receiving TE. He’s a huge target and looks like he’s athletic enough to cause major matchup problems for defenses.

  95. Kevin December 7, 2012 10:39 am

    Al,

I am here and you owe me a beer.

Remember? 2009? Ray Hisatake. You said you were confident he’d return to D-Line, I said he’d remain O-Line. 😎

    Just saying… 😎

    😎

  96. A-House December 7, 2012 10:39 am

    Old School Dave:

we enjoyed the meals at the Crab Pot, but too much food for one person – wife and I shared the “smaller” one – she had to eat all the shrimp as I am allergic.

  97. Kevin December 7, 2012 10:41 am

    Nevermind. We bet a Heineken.

I’d have to be pretty drunk to drink a Heineken.

  98. Old School Dave December 7, 2012 10:41 am

Small kid time, we used to dig up clams in K-Bay. Something that is no longer recommended, but at that time it was fun, though.

  99. Former UH Athlete December 7, 2012 10:41 am

#91, Maybe UH should employ the ‘Florida St – Andrew Wiggins recruiting technique’ when the recruits are here.

It’s the equivalent of starting a sentence: “To be honest with you …”

Re: AD selection – will they do their usual thing and issue the press release late in the day, so it gets buried in the back of the Sports section and doesn’t make it in time for the 6pm news?

BTW, Kevin – from yesterday’s blog – it’s principles, not principals.

  106. Annoddah Dave December 7, 2012 11:27 am

    @Fuud Bloggers:

Ate at Karai Crab: Just like most of the others but higher priced. Boiled in pot with corn and potato. Slightly better in overall quality of shellfish.

Ate at Ragin Cajun: Boiled in bag…got sick from the clams, big time, the other person did not eat the clams and was not sick. The porcelain chair was my closest friend for nearly 12 hours! (Note: some of the clams were closed and only saw them at the bottom of bag…too late)

The cajun dudes can say all they want about crawdads…but that is the worst crustacean to eat!! Muddy, no flavor other than mud. That’s why they put so much seasoning. Once you grow up eating crab and lobster, why would you eat crayfish?

Moral of the story: shellfish is good if it smells okay and not like sulfur. Clams and mussels usually open up after cooking because they were still alive… Shellfish must be alive before cooking, if not, the toxins start to get into the flesh and you can get very sick..

  126. kifi December 7, 2012 12:13 pm

Wonder if our next AD should be someone who comes from a mid-major school, who has experience squeezing money out of rocks. Looks to me like the two finalists come from programs where money is raining down from the sky. They might get frustrated when they find out that money at Hawaii comes from squeezing rocks.

  127. al December 7, 2012 12:13 pm

mih…nah, all we need to do is get guys like you to make a commitment and attend games.

  128. al December 7, 2012 12:15 pm

I guess Colombus, Ohio has faster internet than we do in Hawaii. Just like the old TV days when Hawaii saw the shows one week later. We now get the internet news late, later, latest.

We have speed demons right here, we only need look. We have some of the best O linemen and D linemen, right here, we only need look.

  141. al December 7, 2012 12:29 pm

dio…i was available for lunch today.

i like teddy’s bigger burgers. especially now that burgers on the edge went over the cliff financially.

    another misnomer though.

it really should be called teddy’s bigger burger bill of fare.

a few weeks ago i ran in to get my 83 year old auntie her favorite pastrami burger and fries. my teddy’s bigger burgers bill was $15.

  142. al December 7, 2012 12:31 pm

Stephen, can you clarify the “Charles Clay Rule”, where a walkon can transfer to a D1 program and not have to sit out…

Does a walkon have to be uninvited, ie didn’t take a recruiting trip ?

  144. Kelvin Lavene December 7, 2012 12:32 pm

I was searching Google when I came across your website after several pages of search results. You could get a lot more traffic if you were ranked higher in the search engines. I had a similar problem with my website until I found a company that helped me. Take a look at http://venueseo.com/7-day-free-trial/. I saw more traffic to my website during their free trial period and it really picked up after that. Imagine how much more popular your site could be!

  145. al December 7, 2012 12:34 pm

kapakahi…soon. i believe that the media and uh will wait until the new a.d. is announced first.

this way, the commits get more of a limelight when its announced.

i hear birds chirping about a few more takers.

  146. madeinhawaii December 7, 2012 12:35 pm

    al,

Just gotta find a way to make as much as we do on a Saturday some other day of the week… otherwise, I figure it costs the wife and me somewhere in the neighborhood of $600-800 to attend one game on a Saturday. Easier to ask us to donate something for a silent auction… Which we’ve done for several causes this past year.

  147. Townie December 7, 2012 12:36 pm

@#39 & #41 Oh yeah…Student Special, very plain, with Green River please!

  148. Old School Dave December 7, 2012 12:38 pm

Al: I was surprised to see a new Panda Express in the spot where Burgers on the Edge used to be. I wonder how the Counter at Kahala Mall is doing? I used to like Bob’s Big Boys burgers, but they’ve since closed down. Agree that eating a hamburger is getting hard on the wallet. Still like the grilled burgers at Liliha Bakery – very local taste.

  149. BigWave96744 December 7, 2012 12:41 pm

Wonder if those seeking to transfer will not get released to future opponents, ie the “Mike Wadsworth Rule”

  150. al December 7, 2012 12:42 pm

mih…i know. i am just jerkin your chain.

  151. al December 7, 2012 12:45 pm

os dave… the counter must be doing okay. i like their menu options, kind of like burger king. “have it your way” only the counter actually does it the way you like it.

of course, one could buy a u.s. prime steak for the price of a burger n fries.

its no wonder i like the maple garden all you can eat lunch buffet for ten bucks.

  152. al December 7, 2012 12:48 pm

i wish that w and m burgers would cook to order instead of cook them two hours before the rush hour. the only time i go there is shortly after they open at 9 am.

and the worst thing any restaurant can do is pre-cook french fries. that is one thing you must admire mcd’s for. the have really rigid rules of order when it comes to their fries.

According to his bio, Ben Jay has been in charge of OSU’s operating budget of some $109 million. He also is involved with daily business operations, management, human resources, along with facilities construction projects. As daunting a task it is, Jay sounds like someone who could benefit and turn things around at UH.

  159. Kevin December 7, 2012 1:04 pm

    Pretty much official now.

Hawaii News Now reports Ben Jay is the new UH AD.

Will be interesting to see what his experience will garner in terms of salary. I think the salary range is between from 240-285k?

Regardless of the salary, at least someone has been hired. Only time will tell whether it was a prudent hire.

  169. haka December 7, 2012 1:29 pm

    kevin, my sentiments exactly… 🙂

Welcome to our new AD BJ

Hope this works out for everyone.

  177. Kevin December 7, 2012 1:54 pm

Ben Jay CLEARLY has the most impressive career resume of the most recent ADs in recent memory.

With that in mind, one can assume that he too has done his research into the happenings with UH Manoa and the athletics department. Any prudent individual will listen to what is presented to them from the institution/company they are applying for and then they will go out on their own to dig deeper into what it is they are seeking to get involved with… whether what they find is good or bad doesn’t matter, the point is they can make up their own mind about the situation(s).

Upon accepting the job, one is either ready for the challenge OR is naïve into thinking there will be no issues.

UHAD Jay has the background to seek other opportunities elsewhere. With a resume like his, there will always be opportunities.

Based on what is on paper, we clearly have someone that has the talents and experience.. how that translates to effectiveness in Hawaii and at UHM is obviously the “main event” of the “evening”.

  178. Chee Hoo December 7, 2012 1:59 pm

#158 how hard is it to “manage” an operating budget of $126.5mil when you have enough revenue sources?

he goin flip out when he takes a look at the books and try to figure out how to run an athletic program with not enough resources and getting no help from the state.

on the other hand, maybe he had a pet rock when he was young, and squeezing rocks might be a hobby of his.

Studying this information So i am happy to express that I’ve a very just right uncanny feeling I found out just what I needed. I so much indisputably will make certain to do not put out of your mind this website and give it a glance on a relentless basis.

  227. Shoko December 7, 2012 3:48 pm

This probably one of the biggest obstacles that Jay will face.

In the 2011 fiscal year, the athletic budget was a minus $7,331,488. The following year, 2011-2012 year, the Athletics Department had a net loss of $2,440,041. The institution loaned the Athletics Department the funds to cover the loss bringing the athletic deficit to minus $9,710,073.

If he manages to decrease that by half, I will be the first to call him a genius and support doubling his salary.

  228. wafan December 7, 2012 3:49 pm

  229. Shoko December 7, 2012 3:54 pm

    Interesting tidbit.

Recruiting expenses for UH went from $562,480 in 2010-2011 to $639,040 the following year. Compare that to Ohio State that had a recruiting expense of $1,289,623 last year.

    So new AD is Jay.

Anyway, if you folks are interested in the expenses/revenue of different schools, you can check out this website. Notice the disparity between big schools and small schools. The search is pretty self-explanatory.

All the crab posts are funny. Best dungeness crab I ever had was from San Francisco Chinatown many years ago. Buy it live for $1.99 per lb, take em home, steam em, and eat em over the newspaper. So fat that the meat takes like there was butter on it.

Good hamburger joint in Chinatown called Downbeat next to the old Mini Garden. Serve grass fed beef from Big Island. French fries real good too.

Besides, I don’t think I ever said I don’t respect him. I respect anyone who can parley athletic ability into an athletic scholarship AND employment for the family.

All I said was that I’m not ready to worship at his altar, but even that is mostly because I’m not sure if the services would be Catholic or LDS.

I also like Mike Sellers did not request to be released until it was suggested to him that he find somewhere else to play. It may seem as if he is jumping ship but he is not. Why stay on a team when you are not wanted?

  256. SteveM December 7, 2012 8:23 pm

  257. kapakahi December 7, 2012 8:32 pm

    #256,

That’s how quite a few of the exit interviews went for the fellas….some alot worse.

In addition to Amadi….and with Miah done, still quite a few more other scholie receivers were given the same suggestion/recommendation…..as Sellers was given. That’s why coaching staff has identified receivers (along with OL and DL) as the high priority positions for recruiting.

Meanwhile Coach is contacting various FCS programs to find a program where DG might be allowed to compete at QB for his remaining senior season in 2013.

A man walks into a hamburger shop and orders a regular meal. Later, the waitress brings his meal to him. He takes a bite out of it, and notices there’s a small hair in the hamburger. He begins yelling frantically at the waitress, “Waitress, there’s a hair in my hamburger! I demand to see what is going on!”

So, the waitress takes him back where the cook is and to his demise, he sees the cook take the meat patty and flatten it under his arm pit. He says, “That’s disgusting!”

Then the waitress jokes, “You think that’s disgusting you should see him make donuts.

  263. westwind December 7, 2012 11:50 pm

With the pending departure of more players from the Warrior Football team, it causes me to wonder if we will ever see the likes of a Richard Torres, a Mana Silva, or a Chad Owens during Coach Chow’s term as football coach. It appears that he has his own ideas about what talent is. And yet, it has been proven in the past that it isn’t the size of the dog, but the fight in the dog. This does not bode well for a lot of our young men. Based upon what happened this year, you might be wasting your career/opportunity by choosing UH. It appears desire, effort, and hardwork doesn’t count for much. They call it business as usual. If it was you, how would you like it?

  264. smh December 8, 2012 1:40 am

Thinking back to all the games we lost by blowouts, the coaches almost never dug deeper in their rotations to give those players a chance whether to prove themselves or redeem themselves. I wish nothing but the best for these few young men leaving their Warrior brothers, the friends they’ve made and Hawaii behind. But this is real life. Hope to see them rise if not in another football program, that they finish their education and have successful lives.

  265. just saying December 8, 2012 4:43 am

It seems to me that coach chow is doing a 180 with the type of offense and players he wants. He wants bigger stronger players too run a system like alabama. I think norm chow is a good recruiter, but dont think he can ever get the talent of the big time schools. It seems puzzling too me that he would not try to install a passing offense which should be where he has the most experience and knowledge. what quaterback would want to come to hawaii if you are running offense. norm chow said the more physically superior team will win, if that is true we will never win against the sec teams, that is why june jones used the spread offense with smaller but faster players.just my thoughts, but hope norm chow does well next year.

  266. Moocher December 8, 2012 5:44 am

I don’t buy into JJ knowing he had smaller players so he used the run and shoot. Please don’t tell me when he was a coach in the nfl he had small players compared to other teams and therefore used the run and shoot to compensate…it’s JJ’s choice of offense to run and he will get players to fit. Norm will do the same with what he sees as the right fit for his system.

remember, mac was pretty mch JJ’s style of O. so we might not have seen or noticed transfers the way we see or scrutinize them now.

Chow and the warriors will be fine 🙂

  267. kapakahi December 8, 2012 6:20 am

While smaller quicker slot type of receivers (e.g., Channon Harris, Chad Owens, RGM, Davone Bess, Kealoha Pilares) are definitely better suited to the R-n-S offense, have heard Coach Chow…..as well as Ashley Lelie…..mention at Na Koa luncheons that the larger bigger H-back type possession receivers is what he’s looking for in inside receivers in his Pro Set offense…..as opposed to the smaller quicker receivers that the R-n-S offense prefers.

That clearly explains why Clark Evans (who was deemed too small to play TE) emerged as a slot receiver late in the season…..supplanting Miah Ostrowski…..and why Scott Harding switched from playing the slot receiver to playing the outside receiver at the end of the season.

    Westwind #264,

You wrote that “it appears desire, effort, and hardwork doesn’t count for much.”

I understand that nobody likes to see players leave, but your comment suggests that the players Chow keeps or recruits don’t show desire, effort, or hardwork. Maybe not what you intended, but sure sounds that way.
