Edwards is MWC’s special teams player of the year
Congrats to Mike Edwards, who was named the MWC’s special teams player of the year. He is the first UH player to win such an honor since kicker Jason Elam in 1992.
Edwards was named to the MWC first team as a specialist and second team as a cornerback.
He was sixth nationally in kickoff returns, averaging 30.4 yards per attempt.
Defensive end Paipai Falemalu and punter Alex Dunnachie were named to the second team.
Center Ben Clarke and defensive end Tavita Woodard were honorable mention.

Two finalists for the athletic director’s job will have face-to-face interviews with a UH screening committee today.
Both are associate ADs — one from a Big Ten school, another from a Pac-12 school.
None has an apparent Hawaii tie.
I always felt that bringing in No. 2s (or 2-Bs, 2-Cs) from a big-budget school is like bringing in a high-ranking Ben & Jerry’s guy to run a shave-ice stand. Oh, well.
I hope today’s interview comes with a tour: “These are your locker rooms. No, just these rooms. That other building is the arena …”
And a test: “Attendance has fallen in the major sports and you have an eight-figure accumulated deficit, how will you fix it? Hint: You may not propose a concert.”
Of course, there is an outside chance that the chancellor could appoint Rockne Freitas, who has moonlighted as acting AD since the summer. Freitas, who did not apply, is in New Zealand today as a guest speaker.

I actually hope UH doesn’t hire an AD with direct Hawaii/UH ties. The last two AD’s have been bumbling disasters. JD wasn’t nearly as bad as Frazier with his hires, but he left UH with a black eye. HF was responsible for three of the worst hires in UH history (Greg McMackin, Bob Nash and Jim Bolla) along with incompetence with football scheduling and fundraising.
McMackin inherited the football program at it’s absolute highest and produced 1 winning season in 4 years and left Chow a mess to clean up… Bob Nash completely train-wrecked the basketball program… Jim Bolla’s poor coaching was a highlight of his tenure as he was fired for verbally and physically abusing the Rainbow Wahine players. All three sports suffered through declining ticket sales/attendance under these coaches.
Time for a fresh point of view. Time to remove the old excuses: “we’re in a small conference… we’re a state school with financial problems… poor us because we don’t have funding.” That attitude must end.

The $64 question in a lot of Management 300 series classes is: What is the difference between a leader and a manager? Leader manages people and a manager manages systems is one answer. I think for an AD, we need a leader, one who has a vision and the will to pursue it. Managers abound by the thousands…only a few are leaders. I don’t care if it is a male or female, as long as they don’t step on their dork or get wrapped up in their panties!

#31, I said Frazier was responsible for McMackin’s hiring. Mack was hired about a week or two after Frazier was canned.
Frazier had 18 months to negotiate an extension with Jones, but failed to get a deal done. Maybe ST can confirm, but I don’t think Frazier/UH even made an offer to Jones until after SMU made their offer.

MRC Greenwood, Rockne Freitas and the BOR are the reason why we are where we are now. And why would you want to hav RF for the AD? The deal that they made to get UH into the MW was not beneficial to UH. They put us in the hole finacially. (Don’t forget the recent flip-flop on the Temple game). RF is now “crossing the T’s and dotting the i’s”, with respect to the public’s money. This is after being rather carefree with it.

UH needs someone with a vision, a plan, is organized, pays attention to detail, who communicates well, has good management/people skills, who can get everyone who works in the AD on the same page.
I remember when Stan Sheriff was interviewing for the UH AD job back in the early 80s. The thing that impressed the committee members was that Sheriff moved his seat so that he was sitting next to the members instead of across from them.

What’s great about all the award winners/mentions is that everybody except Falemalu is projected to be back for 2013. Edwards is on the fence if he’s leaving for the NFL or not, but 2013 will be his senior year.
Clarke looks like he’s going to be a real good player. Tavita is solid and Edwards is great.
Gregory, Iosefa, Graham, and a senior Stutzman and the offense looks pretty good at the skill positions. Hopefully Chow can recruit/develop a deep threat to round out the skill positions. Justin Vele looks like a nice player once he develops. Ikaika Woosley also looks promising. UH should have a healthy QB battle with Graham and Woosley in the spring. Graham has the edge because of size/arm and 2 years under Jim Tressel’s development at OSU, but both QBs will be in their 2nd year at UH and both don’t have any game experience.
Defensively, just being healthy at the start of 2013 will be a huge boost to the defense. Chow has focused on def linemen in recruiting and looks like he’s landed a couple immediate contributors. If UH’s freshmen LB corp puts on some weight, they will be a solid group. The secondary (UH’s best unit in 2012) pretty is pretty much unchanged for next year.
UH had one of the youngest 2-deep depth charts in all of FBS, so that should bode well for the next few years as they develop and improve. UH doesn’t lose any key players for next year, except for Falemalu (Hanohano and Correa aren’t big losses with the returning players and committed recruits) and the overall talent will be better next season.
2013’s non-conference schedule looks like this:
08/29 – USC — Loss
09/07 – at Oregon State — Loss
11/09 – at Navy — Toss up
11/30 – Army — Win
12/07 – BYU — Toss up (revenge game at home + senior night = elevated play by UH)
2013 MWC teams include: Air Force, Colorado St, New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming, Fresno, Reno, San Jose St, Utah St, Hawaii.
Not sure how the MWC schedule will lineup, because they can’t play everybody in one season, but I think if UH progresses how I think they will, UH should beat CSU, UNM, UNLV, Wyoming. Air Force is a maybe depending on location. Fresno, Reno, SJSU and Utah St are clearly better than UH now, and all their QB’s return for 2013
Given the adjustments Kaumeyer made for Air Force, I think UH performs much better vs the option teams next year. Kind of a crazy, but UH will play 4 option offenses + Reno’s Pistol Read-Option in 2013.
So I guess I’m saying UH will have a 6-7 season (assuming 8 MWC games). There’s some wiggle room up or down depending how the MWC schedule lines up.
Ray Nagel did a pretty good job of guiding UHAD to a new level.
It won’t matter who you hire as AD unless they change Upper Campus. There has been too much interference from the Manoa Administration. A new AD would face the same challenges as JD. So hiring someone new would accomplish nothing. There would be the appearance of things moving ahead, but then things would revert back to how things would be manipulated in the past.
The new AD will have to have real thick skin to fend off critics. Hawaii has small TV market and cost of travel a negative. PAC 12 membership out of the cost/revenue model. UH lucky to be in MWC.
Just ask Idaho and New Mexico St.
The only thing I remember about Dobelle was that he supported having UH’s baseball stadium named after Les Murakami– and not wait until after his passing, as was traditional. It passed his “common sense” test.
The tight end ,the Hall kid is stopping, probably because the chance of getting unwanted knocks to the head.
Art and music is more about the mind than hands.
Edwards should turn pro and never look back; think Colt B. Junior year 2nd round , senior year what.
UH should be looking at a AD prospect from a mid major conf. Why? Budgeting and scheduling. someone who can work with the probs UH has. Pac 12 ,Big 10 dream on we will never get there. Why ? simple just look around.
Look at the sources for revenue, how much support is the community willing to
give, when all the private schools consider UH a second or last option.

Since he left pro-football to pursue a music career, he has written songs, musicals/operas and even won several Grammy Awards for songs.

I can’t believe Edwards didn’t make the MWC First Team on Defense as a DB. People didn’t even throw the ball in his direction, and when they did he made them pay. I want to see how many yards receivers put up against Edwards… I bet its better than all four of the guys on the 1st team… They are probably just going by number of INTs…

Big Island scored one of those “Baskin and Robins” guys to head up their city IT Department. A former Microsoft/Dell exec that is insanely overqualified for the position. I hope one of those AD guys decides to take on a “vacation in hell kind of job” in Hawaii. Never know!

Former UH D-lineman Tony Hollyfield (78-81) was a pretty good painter/artist and I read somewhere that his work would be on display in the football office back in the day. His son, Marcus (Pac-5) is now playing football for JJ at SMU.

97. I heard that each team selects players and submits them into a pool of other players from other MW schools. The 24 voters (sportswriters) go online and pick players from that group for POY, first and second team honors, and COY. Similar to how they vote for preseason selections.
about time upper campus show transparancy in this forever search for an athletic director, and upper admin. stay out of his way and let him run the dept the way it should!
Oops, forgot to say that I’m sure there were other UH players that were in that pool. Its just that none of them warranted any recognition compared to the other players in the conference.

I prefer we give the job to a local administrator. Doesn’t matter who. I don’t have a preference. The regents can decide that. Lots of capable local administrators available. We only need look. If you can run a city or state government, you can run a little athletic department like the UH’s department, all things being relative.
The skill sets needed to run our little athletic department are the same skill sets needed to run a medium to large corporation. If you can do that, run a medium to large corporation or government successfully, you should be able to run a little athletic department like the UH.
Former mayors, governors, house speakers, senate presidents, business executives from BOH, Hawaii Electric, First Hawaiian, etc., are well qualified to handle this position. Because they have already retired and are there likely monied already, they wouldn’t be doing the job for the money. We wouldn’t have to pay these kinds of guys insane amounts of money because most of them already have money. We get a seasoned business executive for a fair price, and the business executive, who as strong ties to the community, gets to use his or her skills one more time to help the community. These would be the ideal kinds of guys and gals, for me, to hold the AD post next.
If you can run those kinds of large, complex entities, you should have all the necessary skills, training, and experience needed to run our little athletic department.
If they were transparent, I would think they would state who the two running candidates are for the job.
Cal State Fullerton reported who the final four candidates were for their AD position.

Old School Dave, you do realize that the piece you cite actually classifies the accusation of Dobelle’s disdain for Asian women as a mere ploy to incite anger against him? The implication is that the accusation was false, although no evidence is provided to prove such falsity.
Taken as a whole, the piece is intended to question the critics and criticisms of Dobelle rather Dobelle himself. In other words it is critical of the process behind Dobelle’s removal rather than being critical of Dobelle.
Not saying the allegation is accurate or inaccurate, but we should have clarity about what any quoted or referenced material actually says.

I wasn’t too concerned about the lack of polish on offense. The O-line, which I focused on watching, was pretty much a revolving door as different combinations of players were tried out. For instance, Muir, Milovale, Sai, Koloamatangi and Shigematsu (I think) all got time at LT. Hard to develop cohesion with that amount of substitution.
The guy who stood out for me on the O-line was Ben Dew. He was solid in pass pro and showed good ability to pull and to line up blocks with LBs or DBs off the line of scrimmage. Also, seems to have a bit of a nasty streak that all really good guards seem to have. Like him a lot.
Muir seemed to have the best practice of the LTs that I saw. Milovale didn’t seem to have the physical presence that I was expecting, but he’s just getting into practice so maybe that will come. Ditto for Sai, who seems better suited for G. Wonder who the coaches start at G out of Dew, Lefotu, Sai, and Winchester-Makainai. Koloamatangi seems to be very athletic, but I’m guessing he will RS as he looks like he can (and should) pack on 20 or 25 more pounds of muscle.
Didn’t really focus on the centers and couldn’t really see the right side of the O-line as offense was always moving right to left. I recall Hunter Hollowed having a nice block on that side, though.
Other guys who stood out to me:
Haku Correa. He’s such a BULL in the middle and seems like he will have a great year. Calen Friel also looked like he’ll get quality minutes.
Benny Fonua. Awesome to see a true frosh calling signals as the MLB.
Steven Lakalaka. Again, nice to see a true frosh in the active mix. Runs hard.
Mike Edwards. He’s fearless (little crazy?) as a return man. No dancing with him, just one cut and go. Doesn’t matter how many guys are barreling down on him. On the other hand, not sure about having smaller guys like the receivers used as wedge blockers.
Marrell Jackson and Jerrol Garcia-Williams. Wasn’t really focusing on the defense, but those two always seemed to be around the ball.
David Graves. Perhaps showed the most out of the receivers on this day. Speed, moves, and hands. Gotta get him some minutes. Still a Graves Digger.
Does anyone know if the player’s have a special training table during spring ball? Correct me if I’m wrong, but come Spring Semester, there are no training table meals. Is that correct?
Only other requirement I would add: the retired exec/administrator must be a sports fanatic.
Jeff Portnoy is a good example. Lawyer during the day, sports fanatic at night, talking basketball with knowledge and passion for the game on his program. Portnoy is nearing retirement age from his practice, he is skilled in the ways of business and human relations, and he loves sports and has strong ties to the community. If a person like him were to be enticed to be AD, he likely would not be doing the job for the money, after retirement, of course.
There are many in our community like Portnoy who would make an ideal AD.
Basically, my criteria: retired business/government exec, local, strong ties to the community, monied already, with a passion for collegiate sports and a desire to contribute once more to the community, post retirement, by building our athletic programs in nationally recognized and respected programs.

I liked Dobelle. Met with him a number of times for business-related matters. He was accessible, approachable, and open-minded about new approaches to solving long standing problems at the UH and new initiatives to improve access to higher education for all.

My biggest criticism of Dobelle was his proclaiming that the WAC was dead in the water and that UH would be bailing for the MWC at the first opportunity. Jeez, that is still one of the stupidest statements in human history. Talk about giving away leverage.

oh my, how easy to forget how they controlled Hawaii from the turn of the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century because of their connection to King Kamehmeha and his successors and the vast amounts of land granted to them for helping the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Yet, during the Great Mahele, the common folks blamed the “haoles” for stealing their land and yet it was their “royalty” that gave the land to the white missionaries for services rendered.

Actually, this is the first time we have anybody on the MWC allstar team. We were never in the MWC. We were in the WAC for 20+ years. The MWC was formed when they split from the WAC and we weren’t invited. So Owens and Colt and the others were not in the MWC.

Shoko. Do you know for sure if one candidate is a woman? I wouldn’t mind a woman for AD. That way anytime the Wahine go 29-2 they’ll host.
No one understands the needs of our athletic programs, and the hopes of the community regarding these programs, better than our very own people, and this is why I advocate hiring locally someone who already understands the concerns and needs of the community, as opposed to someone we need to put on the payroll for two to three years while he or she is on the job learning about our community, its wants, and its needs, as regards our programs.
Yet our current approach is we bring in an outsider, give him or her two to three years to learn our community’s needs and desires for our programs, and then we fire him or her a year later for not understanding our school, its needs, the community’s desires and objectives for the programs, etc., and for not moving fast enough to accomplish the objectives the community wanted to see accomplished. This is a foolish approach to hiring an AD and improving our programs and this is the approach we are now taking with the interviews of the mainland guys.

The UH admin will pick who THEY want, not necessarily the best qualified for the job.
Local people often go with their hearts, not always with their heads. In the case of selecting an AD, you must take an objective approach and see which candidate can raise funds and improve the athletic department moving forward.
Look at what Jim Livengood has done at UNLV… The football program is still struggling, but has shown improvement. The basketball team is doing very well and has a brand new, state-of-the art facilities. UNLV’s other athletic programs are on the rise and Livengood has done a great job at putting UNLV at the forefront of Las Vegas media again.

Of course, this is just a guess with no logical reasoning other than the fact the schools are from the PAC12 and Big10. However, I was thinking one of the candidates might be a woman who has held an associate AD position as senior womens administrator. Since there are very few woman in AD positions at the Division I level, I thought UH would be the perfect institution that might hire their first woman athletic director.
As for my Mchigan guess, I figured since Hawaii just scheduled a game with them for 2016 there might be someone there that is interested.

The criteria for AD shouldn’t be who can raise funds. To an extent, the issue of fund raising is self-perpetuating, at least on the local level. Companies like FHB, BOH, HA, Time Warner, Chevron, etc. will always be UH contributors. Their customers demand it, and where else would they put their as money? The amounts available may vary from year to year, but that’s more a function of the economy than a desire or lack of desire to donate to UH, IMHO.
OF course, if you are talking about new sources of funding then that is a different issue, but people who can direct that kind of rain to UH are few and far between. You think JJ could get Boone Pickens to donate $5,000,000 a year to UH? Not gonna happen. Someone like Almidyar wouldn’t donate big bucks unless he took an interest in the school, in which case he would want to be on the BOR or some such. Hiring an AD on the belief that they can make rain for UH is a set up for disaster. That’s how you get Dobelles.
TO me, the more important thing for our next AD is a strong tie to the major power conferences and/or the NCAA. Such a person should be able to pick up the phone and find out why Wahine Vball was short-changed and get guarantees that it will never happen again. Or to call the MWC commissioner to find out why we are paying travel subsidies to schools joing the conference AFTER us.
If a candidate does not possess the ability to make those kinds of calls initially, that person MUST show promise in being able to DEVELOP that ability on a NATIONAL — not local level.
That is how Stan Sheriff did it. Ray Nagle too. Yoshida had problems in this area, at least initially, as did Frazier throughout his term. I think JD probably was better than Yoshida or Frazier, but the money game changed so quickly with the BCS and conference realignment, that he had his hands full playing catch up. It’s difficult to plot a course to safety when the map keeps changing.

So, for those saying Portnoy, I say “seriously?” He’s smart and passionate, no question, but does he have any ties to the NCAA? Don’t think so.
Oh, and another name that keeps coming up, Keith Amemiya. No question he did a great job at HHSAA. He’s sincere, hard working, passionate, but connected to the NCAA? Not to my knowledge. Even locally, his ability to generate funding was tied in significant part to the man behind him. THAT’s the guy with ties to FHB, etc.
Re MWC All-Stars:
Great that Tavita Woodard was named. Very deserving. I was disappointed to see that he’s going to be a senior next year.
Bummer that Beau Yap was not named. I thought he had a very productive year.

I would really like an AD that has very strong connections to the west coast schools we schedule our OOC games with. Someone from the PAC12 will obviously have those connections in the PAC and probably with a conference like the WCC as well. That might help in scheduling some basketball games too.
The associate AD’s should be from here or at least have local connections to keep the relationships going with local donors, business, politicians etc.
If we can find one person with all of the above, great. If Tomey were a few years younger he may have been a good candidate for the job.

Watching a “Real Sports” segment on concussions in football. Once again, the NoClueAtAll has its head in the sand. Even the NFL has put limits on hitting in practice (1x/wk). One study showed that if a player gets over 700 hits over the course of a season, the damage could be permanent. Most of the hits occur in practice. Many are calling for the NCAA to assist former players with their medical bills for football-related injuries.

Columbus native Ben Jay has been the senior associate athletics director for finance and operations at Ohio State since 2006. He served as associate commissioner for business and finance at the Pacific-10 Conference for 12 and a half years before returning to Columbus to join the Ohio State staff.
As the department of athletics’ chief financial officer, Jay’s duties include the planning and implementation of all aspects of its $109 million operating budget. He also oversees the athletics business office, facility operations, event management, human resources, information technology and the OSU golf course and OSU Ice Rink. Additionally, Jay oversees facilities construction projects for the athletics department and monitors other special projects such as the Equity and Athletics Disclosure Act.
Jay earned two degrees from Ohio State, including a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1981 and a master’s degree in athletics administration in 1989. Between degrees, he served as general manager for the Redwood Pioneers, a minor league baseball team affiliated with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and then was director of operations for the Cleveland Indians. After receiving his master’s degree, Jay served as an assistant athletics director at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., before moving on to the Pac-10.

After serving in a senior capacity with mutli-media marketing rights holders ISP Sports and IMG College, Solly Fulp rejoined Cal Athletics as Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer. Fulp began his new position on Nov. 7, 2011.
Already very familiar with the Cal campus, Fulp returns to Berkeley where he worked from 2003-08, first as assistant athletic director for corporate development from 2003-05 and later as vice president and general manager for the Cal ISP Sports Network from 2005-08.

From 1996-2003, Fulp worked at Sacramento State, moving from director of athletic events and facilities to marketing director to associate athletic director for external affairs.
Fulp received his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Oregon and he earned a master’s degree in educational administration and policy studies from Sac State. He has also recently served as an adjunct professor with the University of San Francisco’s Sports Management program teaching a course on “The Business of College Athletics.”

Both look like solid candidates with PAC12 experience. Hopefully that will help us with scheduling some quality OOC games.
I’m hoping that his staff will be comprised of some good candidates with strong local ties to burn the opposite end of the candle.

In these financially-challenged times, yes, being a bean counter is a plus. He’s also got experience with fund raising and pinching pennies as a minor league baseball manager. Liking him on paper.

On paper I like the candidate from OSU, money talks in these dire times for UHAD. He has the business acumen we need to run the department like a business.
Fulp is a person Apple could use to rebrand UH, his IMG experience improves UH marketing potential. But we need a businessman to run a sports program.

Didn’t people want JD because he was really good at fundraising and could bring in a lot of money? In my view, I would like to know what their vision is to turn things around knowing what the roadblocks are (mainly State funding and upper campus management). How are they going to work around those roadblocks to get the UH Athletics into the red and bring world class athletics to UH? How are they going to get more UH students involved in UH sports? That’s the kind of things I am more interested in, not if they can make money or schedule PAC 12 schools.

You just don’t get it. Too many Kool-Aid drinkers here.It won’t matter who you hire as AD unless they change Upper Campus. There has been too much interference from the Manoa Administration. A new AD would face the same challenges as JD. So hiring someone new would accomplish nothing. There would be the appearance of things moving ahead, but then things would revert back to how things would be manipulated in the past. Ohio State, Cal Berkley, doesn’t matter. Sounds impressive but the people on the top as it stands call the shots. The new AD for all intents and purpose would just be a figurehead.
Reading between the lines, one can only conclude that the present coaching staff would prefer that the majority of the football team be walk-ons (non-scholarship) players. Thereby freeing up scholarships for the new recruits. So it should not be a surprise that we are hearing that players are being weeded out. “We don’t need you.” “We will not be renewing you scholarship.” We have been told by some of the posts on this blog that this is the business of college football. You can’t help but feel for the young man who commits to a program and now has to face the stark reality that his football days may be over.
Was the release of the finalists’ names authorized? Wouldn’t the person not getting the job be put in an uncomfortable position with hie (her) current employer?

Job seeking is nothing new in the athletic world and am certain that the institutions know that the two were looking into possibilities of newer worlds, titles etc – so long as the salary was the same if not higher.
Both people sounds good to me – even Mr. Jay has PAC-10 experience in addition to the fact that he is over at Ohio State.
