Kapua Sai retires from football

IMG_0231

Offensive lineman Kapua Sai is retiring from football after suffering yet another concussion. He had a season of eligibility remaining.

“For safety reasons and for later on in life, I need to do this,” Sai said.

Sai said he had “quite a few” concussions “in middle school and high school.” He said he suffered from mild concussion-like symptoms earlier this year. He suffered his recent concussion against UNLV this past week.

“You don’t want to take chances,” UH coach Norm Chow said. “I read the Jim McMahon story with tears in my eyes. Football’s not that important.”

Sai is a Saint Louis School graduate who played at Utah, earning a bachelor’s degree in three years. The early graduation enabled him to transfer this past summer without having to redshirt this year.

“He really worked hard to get home for a year and get his studies and really help us,” Chow said. “He brought a lot of leadership.”

Sai said he plans to continue working toward a master’s degree.

Kiha Sai, who is redshirting this season, said he will request to wear his older brother’s No. 57 next year.

Friends and family will be allowed to give lei to the seniors after tomorrow’s game against South Alabama.

The 17 seniors will be introduced before the game. After the game, there will be no team meeting, and the players will be free to mingle with friends and family immediately.

Kapua comes from a very Akamai family with Father Dr. Keanu Sai and Uncle Billy Kenoi (Big Island Mayor) being very prominent community leaders. The family was so stoked that both boys played together on a same team for the first time in their lives. Kiha will no doubt rep big bros’s #57 very well. MAHALO KAPUA 🙂

  28. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 7:01 am

Kiha wears No. 75, so with some creative stitching, he can flip the numbers.

  29. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 7:03 am

Kids today are a lot craftier. They’ve been waiting until after practices to ask players for gloves, wristbands, etc.

I can just hear Al Ginoza going: Noooooooo.

  30. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 7:05 am

    Stephen,

With the 15 seniors in today’s picture plus the mention of Legay & Leslie makes 17.

In the picture above there is #82, Darius Bright.

Will he be the 18th senior honored tomorrow?

  31. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 7:07 am

    BigWave

From what I was told, Darius Bright was invited to the ceremony. He declined.

  32. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 7:07 am

For sake of the hardcore peeps, what time will the Senior Intro be tomorrow? 5:45ish, perhaps?

  33. expat November 30, 2012 7:11 am

Several players in the same year retiring because of the risk of further injury — as opposed to a specific injury that is career ending… I don’t recall if this has happened before with UH football. I think this is a positive precedent that the players are getting support for making mature decisions about protecting their health. They are in their early 20s. They are going to have to live with the consequences of some of these injuries for the rest of their lives. Smart decision by Kapua.

  34. Ballpicker November 30, 2012 7:13 am

Good morning and Aloha Friday to all Warrior fans.

Another season comes to an end. Many thanks and Aloha to all the players, their ohana and to all the coaches for the tireless effort given during this very difficult season. They never gave up, stuck together as a team and supported one a other as they should have. Imua to next season!

Thanks ST for all the fine reporting and your tireless efforts in bringing us all the latest info regarding the team. I’m going to have to pay better attention to ur lead in’s because u are really testing your theory that people aren’t reading your posts. Actually alot of your “miss steaks” are quite amusing.

Warriors’ , lets end this football season with a check in the win column.

Good morning DPK. Are u attending the Street Grinds tonight in Kakaako? Ill probably be mingling around after I hit the gym this afternoon.

    Go Warriors.

  35. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 7:19 am

    #31 thanks Stephen…

Atleast we won’t hear stories of him being shafted.

  36. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 7:24 am

Guarantee a lot more players will be asked to retire or transfer to open up scholarships.

Wouldn’t be surprised if SS retires from too many hits this year

Good job and good luck, Kapua Sai.

CG ~ IWWTHM actually wears a community activist hat on weekends and holidays. I credit him for trying to make a difference in his neighborhood. He is a more noble person than his blog handle may suggest. His unsuccessful district campaign might have been hampered by the controversy over his connection with a powerful member of the Sports media.

Ah, soo desu. Good going and good luck to a iwwthm!!!!

  38. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 7:29 am

    33. LOL I hope you don’t really believe all that. It happens when you only have 13 available scholarships to hand out.

  39. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 7:37 am

i wouldnt call kenoi a community leader.

  40. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 7:37 am

They always had more than 13.

  41. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 7:39 am

As of now, there would be 30 returning Seniors in the spring 2013 with atleast 21 on scholie. I suppose some of the other 9 may receive a scholie as a senior because of significant PT or impact to the team.

  42. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 7:40 am

quite a bunch of seniors graduating this december, hopefully chow brings in a few mid-year JC kids so they can participate in spring ball.

  43. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 7:50 am

    40. Well as of Monday on call the coach, Rauscher said they had 13 to give out. Just going off his words.

Sad to read about Kapua Sai, but glad that he realizes that his future is not only about football.

Thank you Kapua Sai for returning to Hawaii for your final college football career. Best wishes in your future endeavors.

  46. Stretch November 30, 2012 8:00 am

    good morning Tsaikos!!

jeezy – it was Wiesehan who did the Call the Coach show. He did say 13 but there will be more than that available

  47. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 8:01 am

I think that was Wiesehan. But he was off on the number. Plus, there have been a few that have requested scholarship releases. They want to play, and they realize they won’t get much playing time in the next couple of years.

  48. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 8:05 am

If you’re a scholarship player on scout team, and you don’t mind being on scout team, you’re not going to be cut.

    There is a process.

But nobody is doomed to be at a certain level. They practice only two units, and the rest go to scout. People can work there way off scout. Keao Alo did.

  49. Rodney November 30, 2012 8:09 am

    Good luck and Imua warriors!!

  51. kev-1 November 30, 2012 8:14 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Football is nearly as much a fabric of our society as the military. Injuries and fatalities are found in both pursuits. I wonder 100 years from now how things will be different in both. Perhaps avatars? For now, I enjoy the combat of our Warriors and hope they do not get seriously injured.

    Go Warriors!

@#55 ST, Whoohoo that one nearly sailed over. It took me several minutes to get that one!

  57. d1shima November 30, 2012 8:38 am

Many names earlier than when I started posting here but the Brennans, Bess, Sateles, Elimimians gave way to the Alexanders, Bains, Estes, Leonards who gave way to the Moniz, Salas, Meatogas, Paredes and finally to the group that exits tomorrow….

…whoever is gonna be in the next bunch, still gotta support ’em. No mattah who it is.

    GO WARRIORS!

  58. Old School Dave November 30, 2012 8:49 am

Good luck to Kapua Sai. Mahalo for coming home and playing for UH (giving up a scholarship at a BCS school). Take care and get well. Your health comes first and you have your whole life ahead of you.

  59. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 8:50 am

    46. You’re right. I mixed up the names. My point is that we didn’t have a full 25 scholarships to give out this year and I know the coaches are going to be finding ways to fill that class. Whether its guys retiring or telling a player they are better off transferring because they wont play. You will see more names sooner than later.

  60. Old Diver November 30, 2012 8:52 am

Great call Kapua, you have your priorities in the right order. Good luck.

  61. Shoko November 30, 2012 8:53 am

For what its worth, I think Stokes was a good kid but somehow when you hang around the wrong people, trouble seems to knock on your door.

  78. Annoddah Dave November 30, 2012 9:31 am

ST: What’s that saying? Different Stokes for different folks?

  79. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 9:36 am

I hope it was a misunderstanding.

I just think stealing is wrong.

I don’t care if it’s Stevie Wonder money, Lindsay Lohan boosting a necklace or those, um, mysterious burglaries at UH, stealing is just wrong.

  80. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 9:38 am

By the way, did you guys know that UH’s campus security are actually state employees?

  81. madeinhawaii November 30, 2012 9:38 am

What’s good about all those steals if you get caught and stuck with 5 blatant personal fouls? 5 will cost you 10 or more… and you’re out of the game.

  82. 3-Prong November 30, 2012 9:38 am

74 ST: you sure know how to “take it to da hoop”.

  83. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 9:40 am

is allen sampson still on the team?

  84. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 9:40 am

In case anyone was wondering, Siaki Cravens’ girlfriend is now a pro beach volleyball player.

  85. Shoko November 30, 2012 9:41 am

After hearing about Stokes, the thought of the person(s) behind the recent string of breakins and laptop thefts on campus did cross my mind.

  86. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 9:42 am

    Letsgo:

Allen Sampson is indeed on the team.

He re-injured the knee, so he had surgery in August or September. He should be good to go.

    Same deal with Samson Anguay.

  87. Shoko November 30, 2012 9:42 am

Allen is still on the team, but out for the season with a torn ACL?

  88. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 9:44 am

    i know hes injured.

just weird that Anguay, Elisara and Cravens are all on the hawaiiathletics.com roster, but Sampson is not.

  89. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 9:45 am

    Shoko:

Assuming it’s not an inside job, then I think campus security is accountable for not stopping the burglaries.

However, there should be different grades. If you’re stealing Macs, then that’s one thing. If you’re stealing PCs, well, then we’re not talking Ocean 11 here.

If you’re going to do the crime, do it at Tiffany’s, not Ross’.

  90. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 9:47 am

    letsgo:

There are quite a few who are on the team but not listed on the roster.

Every time there’s a scrimmage, I have to ask Brian Clay for the IDs of players with no numbers.

  91. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 9:48 am

yeah lots of scout/rs players who never ever got added to the roster. but Sampson was on the roster then got taken off.

maybe Inouchi should put him on there.

  92. d1shima November 30, 2012 9:50 am

I still feel bad for that guy on the “I’m Michael Jordan” guy commercial on ESPN….

  93. Shoko November 30, 2012 9:51 am

    89. I agree. Makes you wonder if UH security is undermanned.

If its one person that is responsible, all the items that were stolen could end up being substantial and result in stiffer punishment.

  94. Shoko November 30, 2012 9:53 am

Just found out the Hawaii -UNLV point spread is 20 points. That seems a little high.

  95. d1shima November 30, 2012 9:53 am

And to enhance your trip as you go “on your merry way” this weekend:

    H-1 FREEWAY LANE CLOSURES

    FROM PEARL CITY TO WAIPAHU

HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation advises Oahu motorists that two left lanes will be closed on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction between the Pearl City/Waimalu Off-Ramp (Exit 10) and the Waipahu Off-Ramp (Exit 8B) on Sunday, December 2, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., for viaduct deck repairs.

    A third lane will be closed from 6:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Two left lanes in the eastbound direction will be closed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Maybe a sleepover in town after the luau?

    Stephen Tsai:

Explains why it takes 3+ hours for them to check if a dorm is really on fire or if it was a false alarm….. 🙄

  97. Shoko November 30, 2012 9:55 am

Then again, they did beat UC-Irvine by 28 points. However, they lost to unranked Oregon and almost lost to Dixie State in OT.

  98. Annoddah Dave November 30, 2012 10:03 am

I always thought it best just to pick a favorite number, no matter which player wore it.

  102. tommui November 30, 2012 10:19 am

    Re #67 & 69

    ST is on a roll!

  103. gobows November 30, 2012 10:22 am

    #84 would that be FF?

  104. 3-Prong November 30, 2012 10:39 am

84: Too bad. FF would have taken todays team to a different level. Oh well.

  105. westwind November 30, 2012 10:58 am

Hearing all the goings on with players being told not to return, Darius Bright declining to participate in the Senior walk, and the talk about how only two units are active and the rest are scout team members, leads one to think there can only be a morale problem. In fact my family has been totally turned off by what’s been happening. Coach Chow being introduced at the Downtown Atletic Club held so much promise. We were looking forward to moving ahead. There was no pre-conceived notion of even talking about wins. But, what has transpired over the course of this season has left a bad taste in our mouths. We are not rah-rah-rah types. We support the young men. We find it increasing hard to believe and support the coaching staff.

  106. LizKauai November 30, 2012 11:09 am

And to those who must turn to another creative outlet, BEST WISHES for a HAPPY LIFE!

  107. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 11:09 am

    westwind:

Not sure about a morale problem, but the players seem to be having a good time.

The most upbeat people at every practice are Brian Clay, Cayman Shutter, Taylor Graham and Kyle Niiro.

  108. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 11:10 am

Oh, and Darryl McBride and Clark Evans.

They’re always having a good time.

  109. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 11:10 am

And Higgins and Ingram. Those two are hysterical together.

  110. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 11:11 am

He’ll laugh, and say: “I’m staying right here.”

  111. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 11:12 am

At least, Darius Bright leaves undefeated.

He won his only fight this season.

  113. al November 30, 2012 11:31 am

happy birthday mrs. sailor blue aka the beautiful janice!

(i completely forgot about an event last night…)

    happy birthday mrs. bighilo!

  114. al November 30, 2012 11:32 am

i thought that going in we had 17-18 available and now those numbers may reach 21-23?

    are those non-qualifiers still coming?

ronnie fields, dejon allen in particular.

  115. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 11:36 am

Stephen, SAD thing is that many here and SportsHawaii have bought into the crap and have become so negative. There are over 100 guys on the team, yet just because maybe 10% are not happy, some claim the whole team is in disarray.

most of what is told to them is third or fourth hand or from some anonymous person on the internet.

Ah, Minahs, next year they will eat crow and jump back on…

  116. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 11:54 am

    Not everyone will be happy.

There was a lot of unhappiness last year.

  117. tommui November 30, 2012 11:57 am

    Re #104

Is this a case where someone is a pro in one sport still may be eligible in another (collegiate) sport?

  118. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 11:57 am

    What kind product????

  119. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:01 pm

u know, 119 out of 120 in total offense.

  120. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 12:02 pm

Tom you mean like Faylyn being on the UH Sailing Team?

  121. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 12:04 pm

    LGW, I know.. I just thought this was a family blog…. 🙂

  122. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:05 pm

Sorry, you can’t swear on a family blog.

  123. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:07 pm

People seem to forget that when Mack came aboard, the exodus included Korey Reynolds, the late Mitch Farney, La’Marcus Gibson, Kevin Konrath, etc.

  124. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:09 pm

    junk product?

  125. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:09 pm

    Oh, I remember the outrage.

    They cut Korey Reynolds!!!

    They cut Kevin Konrath!!!

    Circle of life.

  126. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:18 pm

i didnt forget, posted bout that on another board. kepoo, rick taylor, eric schaeffer also.

  127. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:20 pm

    Vasconcellos.

    Assily.

  128. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:21 pm

    Kalua Noa.

dont think Vasco or Assily ever qualified anyway.

  129. Kevin November 30, 2012 12:22 pm

    Korey Reynolds! Wow…

Wonder if he would have made a good TE?

  130. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:22 pm

You know what happened to Vasconcellos?

    They forgot about him.

Same with that receiver from Kaiser. They actually forgot they offered him a scholarship.

It was one of those awkward moments, when you either speak up or watch.

  131. Kevin November 30, 2012 12:24 pm

Weren’t a few scholarship guys not invited to fall camp back in 2011? I remember hearing someone say on 1420am that in the Fall of 2011, more scholarship guys weren’t invited back to fall camp…moreso than previous years.

  132. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:25 pm

yes Mack forgot that they offered Vasco and Kalua. cant believe a D-1 coach would ever do that. either hes a joke of a coach or a liar.

  133. Will-I-am November 30, 2012 12:26 pm

Is it true? Tickets to the J-E-T-S is less than UH?

  134. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:28 pm

theyre different anyway though, since they were never enrolled at UH. moral of their story, if u gonna “greyshirt,” u better sign a scholarship agreement so ure covered.

  135. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:28 pm

Von Appen recruited a receiver who didn’t want to play.

So they made him jog during practices.

He would jog by and ask: “How late is the book store open until?”

    Then he’d jog away.

And when he jogged past, we’d tell him the answer.

    Then he’d jog away.

We had conversations with him the entire practice. And he got into really good shape. He just never played. And he was happy.

  136. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 12:30 pm

Signed documents are only valid up to the start of the fall semester.

And that’s how UH lost Tyler Grey to Boise State.

  137. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:36 pm

LOI are binding for only the fall semester, for both the college and the recruit.

but the recruit can sign a scholarship agreement which binds the school, but not the recruit.

  138. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 12:39 pm

Also during Mack tenure the following either got asked to retire or transfer or was cut:

His first year was when the ax came down on many….

In 2008 – Kirk Alexander, Josh Aufai, Travis Campbell, Camron Carmona, JP Davis, Britton Forester, BJ Fruean, Le’Marcus Gibson, Keenan Jones, Kevin Konrath, Jared Lene, Erik Pederson, Korey Reynolds, Eric Schaeffer,

In 2009 – Rykin Enos, Steele Jantz,Bryce Kalauokaaea, Daniel Lofton, Daniel Otineru, Rick Taylor, Keahi Watson

2010 – Malcolm Lane, Veni Manu

2011 – DJ Armbrust, Corey Lau, Corey Nielsen, Hogan Rosehill, Steven Stepter,

  139. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 12:43 pm

So yes Chow is a monster for not keeping everyone…. He is the only coach ever to do such a dastardly act..

  140. (Jesse) James November 30, 2012 12:43 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos!!!

Happy Birthday Mrs Sailorblue & Mrs BigHiloFan2!

  143. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 12:48 pm

majority of those guys u listed were walkons anyway. so they were more about roster spots than scholarship openings.

Fruean was in the doghouse w JJ from the 06 season, he wasnt coming back. JP Davis and Keenan Jones had run ins w the law, if not for that, they probably would have stayed on the team. im sure Mack would have kept Gibson but he left on his own.

  144. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 12:56 pm

2008 – 8 scholarship guys (Kirk Alexander, ,Travis Campbell, Le’Marcus Gibson, Kevin Konrath, Jared Lene, Erik Pederson, Korey Reynolds, Eric Schaeffer)

  145. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 1:00 pm

2012 Chow 4 scholarship guys (Levi Legay, Brandon Leslie, Waylon Lolotai, Kevin Spain)

  146. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:00 pm

Campbell and Schaeffer were walk ons. so Alexander, Konrath, Lene, Pederson and Reynolds. Gibson left on his own.

im all for cutting players that arent good enough. just be straight up about it and dont renew their scholarships. im not dumb, i understand how college football works.

and just bc other coaches do it, doesnt mean there wont be backlash. thats the politics of college football.

  147. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:01 pm

    Thomas Olds.

  148. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 1:02 pm

Olds has personal issues, thus why he got kicked off his JC team this fall.

  149. WarriorMojo November 30, 2012 1:06 pm

OMG, are we gonna re-do the Olds melodrama again? Wasn’t it just last week?

  150. tommui November 30, 2012 1:06 pm

    #120 – yeah!

Is sand volleyball considered the same as indoor volleyball?

I mean a professional soccer player – can he play collegiate rugby?

Australian football – and American football?

  151. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 1:06 pm

Eric Schaeffer was a 2006 recruit who greyshirted until spring 2007.

But yes Campbell was an “invited” walkon

  152. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:08 pm

either way, Olds is still a scholarship player that Chow cut.

we dont know the real reason Mack cut those guys in 2008. maybe some of them had personal issues too, it just wasnt advertisd on the blogs or message boards. i remember someone posting that they would smoke weed w Konrath all the time. and he didnt even care that he lost his scholarship. who knows if that was true or not.

  153. wowlaulau November 30, 2012 1:08 pm

More ASSumptions by you know who ……

  154. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:11 pm

u right, Schaffer was a scholie kid. i was really lookin forward to him playing.

  155. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:12 pm

oh look, mr. moderator popped his fat head in.

  156. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:13 pm

this is a family blog, watch ur language.

  157. 3-Prong November 30, 2012 1:16 pm

120, 150: it may not matter in the case of FF. I assume the underlying problem was not able to be resolved.

  158. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:17 pm

That would be an inaccurate statement about Konrath.

    Again, don’t speak for others.

  159. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:20 pm

Olds filed an appeal with a committee not affiliated with the athletic department.

There was a hearing, and his appeal failed.

  160. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:20 pm

what are you talking about, im just posting what someone had posted on the boards back in 08. and i said, “who knows if that was true or not.”

not sure who im speaking for? the person who posted it back in 08 who claimed to be friends w Konrath?

  161. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:22 pm

Well, you’re not Konrath, so don’t speak for him or for anybody who posted an inaccuracy about him.

  162. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:28 pm

im just relaying a message. thats the same thing u do everyday.

  163. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:29 pm

jsut like the time u reported victor clore injured his shoulder at the rodeo.

  164. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:32 pm

Yep. That was wrong of me.

And this is wrong of you.

The difference is I actually talked to Clore and quoted him. The fact that he lied, well, shame on me.

I don’t think you’ve ever talked to Konrath.

  165. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:38 pm

oh look, tsai making assumptions now that ive never talked to konrath. just like how he assumed i wasnt even in colorado at the AFA. where’s wowlaulau when u need him?

yes, i never talked to him. like i said, i just relaying a message and i disclaimed it by sayin who knows if its true. probably not, but i was just trying to make a point that we didnt know the reason Mack asked those guys to xfer, if he even did.

  166. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:43 pm

I didn’t say you weren’t at Air Force.

You live in Denver, don’t you?

I just was amazed you were able to sit in the second row behind the bench and hear anything because that’s where all of the Air Force students were standing and yelling the entire game. That’s why I praised you for being in the military.

Let’s not forget how this debate began. It was about departures. I pointed out the number of departures during McMackin’s era. Were they right or wrong? I don’t know. I don’t like any player leaving. But in context, it seems that departures under Chow aren’t out of the ordinary.

  167. kifi November 30, 2012 1:47 pm

Hmmmmm, old article but a very interesting one.

    http://bit.ly/SvNcP7

  168. Annoddah Dave November 30, 2012 1:48 pm

@#166, ST: I hope this guy is not using a government computer for this…that is a no-no for the military!

  169. Kevin November 30, 2012 1:50 pm

Guess people tend to notice certain things when the results on the W-L column lean in the wrong direction.

As a wise poster once said recently: If Chow is cleaning house to make way for players that he thinks can perform in his system to improve the program then so be it. College football head coaches do this all the time.

As I and some others agree: If people don’t like it and think its ruthless, well that IS what college football has become. Its big business. We made it this way.

  170. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:52 pm

    AD:

    I like letsgo.

I was just defending Konrath. Now I’m on the phone scolding BigWave for running away.

  171. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:54 pm

u said u were both on the field and in the press box then said, “were u in colorado?”

said yup, 2nd row at the game. then u assumed i was in the air force. nope, i sat on the opposite end of the student section, where the defense was constantly huddled and where TK/Powell were meeting with them.

it wasnt even loud at the stadium.

  172. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 1:55 pm

No problem with cleaning house. We need to in order to get our program to upper half of the conference.

How the coaches choose to go about it sometimes is a little puzzling to me.

I am not saying its false that Sai has had concussion issues over his career. But it is weird considering none of us have read about it before and it didn’t seem like he missed a lot of time this year due to head injuries. For him to all of a sudden retire when we all have seen football players play through multiple concussions in the past is just puzzling. Especially when the season just ended and a whole off season ahead.

I am not doubting whether or not this is true, I am just not completely delusional to believe everything that is said and i’ll leave it at that.

  173. letsgowarriors November 30, 2012 1:55 pm

AD, stop making assumptions that im in the military. ill wait for wowlaulau to moderate u.

  174. Old School Dave November 30, 2012 1:55 pm

Football scholarships are one-year deals. The players and their parents understand this before accepting the agreement. It’s a mutual agreement between coaches and players.

Back in the “old days” you could just discard or run off players (a la Texas – Meat on the Hoof). I knew a guy who started his playing career at Arizona State. First day of spring ball, ASU HC Frank Kush looks at him and says, “He’s too small. Get him out of here.” The poor guy had to pack his things and exit his dorm room that day.

  175. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 1:55 pm

It was loud behind the bench.

  176. Buffoman November 30, 2012 1:56 pm

Mr. Tsai attempting to convince that individual otherwise is probably akin to a reporter speaking with Trump regarding his “birther” claim. one cannot expect to win although it is quite funny to read.

  177. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 2:01 pm

    Jeezy:

I think there are a lot of unreported concussions.

For instance, Schroeder finally admitted to having two previous ones.

I can see why some players would hide injuries. It’s not smart, but, hey, I guess they want to play.

I do know that the UH doctors are really strict about clearing players. For instance, there’s a player on the women’s basketball team who has had five concussions — three before entering college — and she won’t ever be cleared.

I think Stephen Stepter was the same.

Football is someone’s dream, so I won’t question what they’ll do to attain it. As a parent, though, I don’t know if it would be worth future problems.

  178. gobows November 30, 2012 2:03 pm

#141 didn’t swa run the option on occasion…i recall him playing quit a bit, probably due to injuries

  179. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 2:05 pm

If SS had 2 concussions this season, I would hope coaches sit him out considering player safety is a high priority.

  180. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 2:06 pm

    Buffoman:

Actually, I’m trying to finish a story, so I really don’t want to be in any debates.

    But for the record:

    • I don’t like to see any player leave. Hey, what can I say? You become attached.

    • I do know of back stories, but I don’t want to say anything negative about 20- and 21-year-olds. In my younger days I would, but, nah, there’s no need to do that. Young people make mistakes. That’s life.

  181. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 2:06 pm

Hahaha I remember when Vic told me that he was gonna say that to ST!! The thing about the rodeo. Funny how it was all in the paper too lol! ST, don’t believe all the things the players tell you. Even Blaze would tell me things about how he’d say stuff to you ST that was bogus. Can’t believe what they say all the time.

  182. gobows November 30, 2012 2:10 pm

#181 conspiracy against the UH beat writer unfolds …

  183. jeezy33 November 30, 2012 2:11 pm

    181. Exactly why I say for fans to not believe every single thing they read. Coaches, players, officials will never speak 100% truth.. Just a fact. That’s why there are investigative reporters all over the country that break all these crazy stories we watch. In Hawaii, everything is kept pretty safe.

  184. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 2:12 pm

    MattyBoy:

    That’s why I record everything.

I think Estes told me once he had to cut his hair because it got caught in a fan. I held up the recorder and said: You say it for the record, I’ll print it.

    He did. I did.

I wasn’t about to go to his apartment to see if there was hair in the fan blades or not.

  185. Kevin November 30, 2012 2:12 pm

I do know of back stories, but I don’t want to say anything negative about 20- and 21-year-olds.

There are more than enough people ready to talk smack about people young enough to be their own kids.

  186. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 2:15 pm

On the other hand, there are players who aren’t telling the truth to their folks or people who befriend them, either.

    This I know.

  187. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 2:17 pm

    #181,

    +1!!

  188. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 2:18 pm

    ST,

That’s also true too. Definitely true.

  189. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 2:25 pm

The other thing I do is I ask recruits to tell me their heights, weights and 40 times.

Then I’ll write: “He said he is …”

I’m not about to get a stopwatch and time every recruit.

Almost every starter, though, tells me that I have their height and weight wrong on the starting lineups. Sometimes I think UH uses old measurements. I’ll just say: Tell me what to put down. I figure, with cleats, everyone can be an inch taller.

  190. tommui November 30, 2012 2:29 pm

To have a doctor clear you for playing after suffering a concussion, you have to tell the MD that you had a concussion or symptoms or just act goofy after the hit.

If you have concussion and you don’t report it, the team doctor, though a qualified physician, he is not a fortune teller/psychic.

Add to that, if the MD is not a sports doctor or a neurologist/neurosurgeon, he may not be the best person to determine whether you should be cleared if you had a concussion.

  191. tommui November 30, 2012 2:33 pm

It must be true, I saw it on the internet.

  192. Kaimiloa November 30, 2012 2:57 pm

    #187 … I’m not saying 181 wasn’t a good post but … “+1” your own post? Is that a blog foul?

  193. d1shima November 30, 2012 2:58 pm

    25-20. Wahine.

    7-0. Bruins.

  194. d1shima November 30, 2012 2:59 pm

    …like 😆 your own joke?

  195. d1shima November 30, 2012 3:01 pm

Cardinal HC Shaw’s hand signals seem simple…snap the ball, run it down their throats.

  196. d1shima November 30, 2012 3:10 pm

    …and it works!

    7-7 now

  197. Kevin November 30, 2012 3:12 pm

+1’ing your own post is just a foul period. 😆

  198. Da Punchbowl Kid November 30, 2012 3:15 pm

In other news, Wahine are kickin’ butt. Can I get a syntax/grammar check on that please, d1?

  199. d1shima November 30, 2012 3:15 pm

    Bruins answer the man-test!

  200. Kawika77 November 30, 2012 3:18 pm

Been reading this blog daily for years, and am now motivated to speak. I am a uh student currently though older. Speaking on concussions or back injury, if you are chasing your dreams like many of our boys are, a serious injury could not only curtail but possibly end years of effort. Look at SS, a couple unreported concussions to date, and we ask why didn’t he open his mouth. College is similar to the military, in that in aviation if you have medical problems you will be grounded(benched) for your own safety. Sure speaking up will get you the attention you need to help healing and health. Yet ultimately can effectively end any opportunity you have to chase your dreams, ie starting QB or flying. How many of us have done the same thing in other capacities to ensure progress towards goals or ideals?

  201. d1shima November 30, 2012 3:20 pm

If taken collectively, Wahine is kickin’ butt…

    but…

    😉

  202. Da Punchbowl Kid November 30, 2012 3:22 pm

Readin’ some of the earlier posts this afternoon brings to mind an image of Tsai in them black kung-fu pants, shirtless ala Bruce Lee, tastin’ that little trickle of blood on his mouth… then goin off!

And then d1 and Kevin show up…

    (To be continued)

  203. Da Punchbowl Kid November 30, 2012 3:24 pm

I will properly acknowledge d1’s post in the following fashion: 😆

    British are we , d1?

  204. Kevin November 30, 2012 3:27 pm

Rainbow Wahine up 2 sets to NONE.

    Set 1: 25-20

    Set 2: 25-13

    Seeded #17 .. 🙄

Kent State’s BCS dreams just got crushed…

  218. wowlaulau November 30, 2012 5:24 pm

letitgo, don’t blame me for calling you on what you post, that is all you..

It is not my fault that you cant seem to understand a simple concept like

don’t make assumptions about the players and coaches. You can post that $hit on the scout board…..

  219. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 5:35 pm

I’m sorry I’m blog illiterate. What is meant by “just a foul?'”

  220. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 5:45 pm

Hey, I just got off the phone with Victor Clore.

He’s living in Tulsa, with his girlfriend, who’s in medical school. Victor is a personal trainer there, as we all knew he would be. (The other option, I always felt, was that he would be Vin Diesel’s double.)

Anyway, he must be having some memory problems because he doesn’t know who MattyBoy is. Ah, old age, I guess. He said for you to give him a call so he can remember. He’s got the same cell.

  221. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 5:51 pm

    Good final walk-through today.

The Nielsens are in town — Jon, Corey and Casey.

They’ll be here for a week.

  222. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 5:58 pm

Corey Nielsen was bothered by knee trouble this year. Anyway, he’s here for a week, then he goes back for finals.

He said Saint Francis is in a rural area of Pennsylvania, about a 2-hour drive from Pittsburgh. He said the enrollment is about 2,000.

  223. wafan November 30, 2012 6:03 pm

    Cracking down tonight.

Long day had to work some of the kids for telling untruths.

  224. wafan November 30, 2012 6:04 pm

And a good evening it is turning out to be!

  225. wafan November 30, 2012 6:05 pm

Good luck and thank you to the Warriors who are moving on.

Riley Wallace was here and then not here.

  234. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 7:00 pm

The starting QB at St Francis a senior who went to Penn St as a Freshman. Corey has good chance of claiming the starting job next Spring. GO CN1!!!!

  235. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:04 pm

    Haha ST. He knows me..

  236. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:04 pm

    That’s not my name lol..

  237. BigWave96744 November 30, 2012 7:04 pm

I once went to the sporting store in Windward Mall and thought it was Victor Clore working. Turned out to be his bro. He said people always would come in and call him Vic.

  238. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:08 pm

No I’m not a weirdo fraud just posting random stuff..that would be corny and retarded. And I don’t use my real name or any name anyone would know hahha.

  239. kapakahi November 30, 2012 7:08 pm

Looks like I missed some interesting exchanges…..about Warriors….past and present.

Konrath did NOT leave on his own accord. This I know. AND yes I spoke with Konrath at that time….since he was….and actually still remains a friend of a former Warrior player.

Also, DE Veni Manu quit the team on his own…..walked right off the field during a Fall Camp practice…..and never came back. This I saw firsthand….and got confirmation from a still current Warrior player.

BTW, no comment on Olds….nor any retractions…..nor apologies.

  240. kapakahi November 30, 2012 7:09 pm

On the lighter note….one of his best Warrior moments for this former Warrior was when he, Konrath & Reynolds were driven down to Sandy Beach by JJ for some body surfing…..during the Summer of 2007….their first as Warriors…..and then had shave ice on the way back to UH.

  241. kapakahi November 30, 2012 7:14 pm

FYI….JD interviewed with CSUF this week….so still in the running for the AD position.

  242. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:16 pm

And you know what’s so funny though, the truth…I actually don’t have his number anymore cause I must’ve went through like 4-5 different phones since I actually spoke to him..so yeah it’s been a while….but yes I personally know him..And I can’t believe I’m actually trying to prove this to you on the blog lol..

  243. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:19 pm

I’ll give it away ST just for your assurance that I’m not a liar on your blog, and also that others may take me serious when I post lol…Mention this to him:

    C & K.

  244. 3-Prong November 30, 2012 7:19 pm

    Happy Birthday Shane Victorino.

  245. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:21 pm

He’ll laugh when you tell him lolol.

  246. MattyBoy November 30, 2012 7:27 pm

    ST where you at????

  247. kapakahi November 30, 2012 7:29 pm

One of my Long Beach buddies…..who used to teach at LB Poly….and is a counselor in the Long Beach Unified School District….still keeps in regular contact with former colleagues from LB Poly….teachers, counselors, and coaches.

Word around LB Poly is…..that GDL is not hurt….but not suiting up either…..and therefore not playing. Coach’s decision…..which is completely within his prerogative….as it should….like it should be for Popovich.

Unfortunately though…..probably not gonna help with strengthening the recruiting pipeline from LB Poly to UH any time soon.

BTW, LB Poly playing Mater Dei for CIF-SS Pac-5 Division Championship tomorrow night on Fox Sports West starting at 5 PM HST.

  248. gobows November 30, 2012 7:36 pm

#10 seed louisville lost in 4 to michigan. ncaa seeding is worthless, they only seed teams that they want to host. so every year some non deserving team from the midwest or the south will host a subregional. louisville and kentucky is this years teams.

  249. Rodney November 30, 2012 8:13 pm

My personal observation is that Chow

has gotten the players to play extremely

hard for him.Thats a positive thing.

    Imua Warriors!!!!!!

  250. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 8:26 pm

Coaches don’t get mad if you don’t play their kids. They get mad if you don’t recruit them.

  251. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2012 8:39 pm

Kaumeyer makes the calls on who plays on defense. If it involves a linebacker, Tuioti is consulted.

  252. kapakahi November 30, 2012 9:29 pm

    #252,

True about coaches….but not about family.

    #253,

Not entirely correct…..according to GDL’s cousin….who is also a starting LB Poly ‘backer.

Just saying…..what the word is….among some Jackrabbits.

  253. Kenoisai November 30, 2012 9:31 pm

Mahalo to all the Tsaiko’s for the well wishes for Kapua; our family appreciates it deeply and tomorrow will be a very emotional day as it will be the last that both our boys will be Warriors together, and the last day for Kapua as a Warrior.

For those who have questioned Kapua’s decision and whether or not his injuries are “contrived” by Coach Chow or anyone else to free up scholarships; please don’t presume to do so as this is deeply offensive to our family and is a great injustice to Coach Chow who has our family’s utmost regard and respect.

Kapua has suffered at least 7 major concussions over the course of his football career from Intermediate, High School and College level play, with the latest, and worst to date being that of the UNLV game. This while playing with a shoulder that throughout the past season has dislocated multiple times and was strapped to his chest with a harness and for which he will undergo surgery for in the next week or so, his second major shoulder surgery, none of which has been completely “reported” to the public.

The bottom line, is that the dream of playing football, especially as a D1 Scholarship Athlete comes at a steep price, and one that at this time for Kapua is greater than he can afford to pay. Our entire family is proud of him and how he has handled himself through all of this and for making the best decision for his future that he could under the circumstances. He has offered to and will support and mentor his younger brother Kiha and help to guide him into making sound decisions and ensuring he reports injuries, especially concussions immediately (yes, this is something that as parents we say often, but boys hear the message better from fellow players and mentors then they do from us), to ensure that he can enjoy post-football life….

Mahalo to all of you, for supporting all of our UH Warriors, through the good and the bad…year after year….let’s all get out there and support our boys tomorrow and wrap up this year with a much needed WIN..

    Go Warriors!!

  254. Rodney November 30, 2012 9:41 pm

Quote “injustice to coach chow who has our

    family’s utmost regard and respect”

  255. cocobean November 30, 2012 10:05 pm

#255. No further proof needed that players and/or their familes read what’s posted here and in the comment section of sports articles. People should temper their comments with this in mind.

  256. wafan November 30, 2012 10:08 pm

    Nytal!

  257. Rodney November 30, 2012 10:11 pm

    #257 Amen!!!!!!!!!

  258. Kevin November 30, 2012 10:37 pm

    cocobean,

There are also some parents that read what is written and laugh it off. Why? Cause faceless jackasses don’t matter.

  259. madeinhawaii November 30, 2012 11:07 pm

When someone claims to be a player’s parent or relative in a blog, how can you know for sure?

  260. Kenoisai November 30, 2012 11:26 pm

#262 – seriously? Kapua was born at 1:38pm on 12/21/90 at Kapiolani hospital, 6 weeks premature and weighing 5.5lbs….I don’t know if someone has impersonated players parents before….but I would consider it a despicable thing to do….

  261. Kevin November 30, 2012 11:37 pm

When someone claims to be a player’s parent or relative in a blog, how can you know for sure?

Well, you must think it’s real since you reposted Kenoisai’s original post elsewhere. Jesus…. 🙄

  262. Kevin November 30, 2012 11:41 pm

For some, this has NOTHING to do with who is posting as a relative of a player or how schollies can get yanked or revoked, players getting cut or not asked back… Or how the team runs onto the field, names on jerseys, or who can have long hair or not.

For SOME… this is about “I Told You So” with regards to seeking a new coach last season.

Dont need a Psych Degree to figure that out after a while.

  263. Pomai November 30, 2012 11:58 pm

Kenoisai thank you for your comments, please understand that there are a lot of fans who read this blog and are supporters of the team (players and coaches) but there happens to be a few who just like to hear themselves talk and stroke their own ego’s.

We thank you for your sons effort to be a Warrior but as you said he is making the best decision for his future, as it should be. Mahalo to your whole family.

  264. Mrs. SailorBlue December 1, 2012 1:21 am

Thanks ST and Tsai-kos for the birthday wishes. This was a really big one and I have made the most of it.

Aloha Ke Akua, Kapua Sai. Take care of yourself and your future.

For this last game I am Switzerland. Both of my children graduated from South Alabama. I’ll be cheering for both UH and USA.

  265. maddog50 December 1, 2012 3:34 am

Let’s play this one and win it…Congrats to all outgoing Warriors….hope you become like me, eat drink and live Warrior FB. Those that truly support the program will realize, it is going to work out and some of the warped crap that gets tossed about is exactly that warped crap. Go Warriors—-

  266. mo808 December 1, 2012 4:29 am

Game Day! The Grand Finale! The Last Hoorah for some!

Go Warriors! We’ll be cheering and believing for victory!

  267. wasabi December 1, 2012 5:14 am

I really believe if Chow had done things more diplomatically in the spring that his every move would not be questioned. Hopefully going forward one of the improvements will be in morale and player-coach relations.

  268. azwarrior22 December 1, 2012 5:17 am

Kenoisai – thanks for setting it straight because there’s way too many fans that will read into anything without knowing the whole story and then this is how bad rumors start. Unless you know the full story, we shouldn’t be speculating.

I also want to mention that I sat next to the Sai Ohana at the USC game. Very cool crew and met Kiha there. I remember someone was donning Utah red.

Best of luck to Kapua and Go Warriors !!

  269. smh December 1, 2012 5:20 am

Is David Graves walking tonight? Been quiet about him last few weeks. Good Luck Warriors, finish strong.

” A player on the Kansas City Chiefs shot and killed his girlfriend early Saturday before shooting and killing himself at the team facility, according to police.

The suicide took place at Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs play, and the player shot himself in front of a “couple of coaches,” according to police. The Kansas City Star said the player was 25 years old.”
