Warriors land a top d-lineman

The Warriors have a lot to be grateful this Thanksgiving weekend after receiving an oral commitment from Waianae High defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii.

Tulimasealii, who is 6-2 and 271 pounds, was at the top level of the Warriors’ wish list. He’s agile, strong and fits a big need.

“I’m happy I’m going to be a Warrior,” Tulimasealii said. “It’s a good day for me and my family.”

He received offers from several Pac-12 schools, but wanted the chance to stay in Hawaii, play in front of family and friends, and be part of the UH program.

Here’s his highlight video: Video.

For one night, everything went the Warriors’ way: Solid offense, strong defense, exceptional special teams.

The theme of the week had been: Trust.

“Coach Chow told us to trust each other, and that’s what we did,” cornerback Mike Edwards said.

Defensive tackle Haku Correa said the Warriors found inspiration the past week from the Wounded Warriors Project.

“They’re dying for us,” Correa said. “It was good that we could go out and represent a lot of people and a lot of families.”

* * * * *

The only puzzling moment was punter Alex Dunnachie’s rush.

He more than made up for it with the 73-yard punt.

* * * * *

While teammates were chanting “U-S-A! … U-S-A! … U-S-A!” in the post-game celebration, Scott Harding joked that he and Dunnachie chanted: “Australia!”

* * * * *

Just like old times . . .

jakie

Who were two of the happiest guys in the locker room?

Cayman Shutter and Taylor Graham.

It’s always nice when teammates support teammates.

JUST SIMPLY AMAZING!!!……what kinda positive results can be yielded…..when the Warriors are FINALLY “properly” motivated.

  9. Bugaz November 25, 2012 8:11 am

Nice for a change having the ball bounce in your favor. It’s been too long!

  10. kapakahi November 25, 2012 8:13 am

Also nice to see senior RB Sterling Jackson finally get some extensive PT.

    Good Sunday Greetings Folks!

  12. kev-1 November 25, 2012 8:15 am

Schroeder didn’t look very happy after the game during the press conference. Throw in his comment about not caring about how many fans were in the stands and I think it is safe to say that he has a little bit of “take that” in his message. While I am sure his fan comment was just misworded – I think his intention was more along the lines of saying that they can’t control how many fans show up – I am still glad that Paipai jumped in by saying it mattered to him. Watch it again, it was an interesting moment.

  13. papajoe2 November 25, 2012 8:15 am

kapakahi, yup it was nice to see Jackson, but remember he had problems with his groin which is why he wasn’t playing in previous games.

. . . Speaking of “viewing”… the soft pass rush gave Schroeder’s detractors a chance to see “what the he11 is he waiting for?” Some of those routes took a long time to develop!

And we know who those detractors are; at least on this board 🙂 .

    Happy for . . .

Sterling Jackson – first significant action results in a nice TD. Was crucial on other drives as well.

DEFENSE – Although only against UNLV, that type of performance is what I am hoping for on a more regular basis next year.

Sean Schroeder – nice rebound game in a week when most probably wanted someone else to start.

Miah Ostrowski – not a huge night, but made a very clutch catch on a 3rd down conversion.

Heck . . . the whole darn team. Great win.

  20. Bugaz November 25, 2012 8:20 am

Will Gregory did great in his short appearance at RB. May have had way more to brag about if he was played at that spot earlier.

I think you guys are reading too much into this.

I spoke to Schroeder right after he came out of the locker room, and he was really appreciative of the support for the team. He also was a bit emotional about the Wounded Warrior Project.

I’d cut him some slack. He’s a good guy.

  33. Chicken Grease November 25, 2012 8:30 am

Kev-1, hello there!!!!!! Very happy morning! It’s like Sauron’s ring was destroyed or something! Very nice sun out, weather’s nice and cool!!!!!!

  34. kapakahi November 25, 2012 8:30 am

    #23,

With Sterling gone after this season, Faga Wily would definitely be a great get!

BTW, good to see both Reggie and Richard Torres sporting the Warrior green on the field before last night’s game!

  35. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2012 8:32 am

    Auction:

I’m not exactly sure what the kids get to keep.

By the way, there was an interesting thing. There was a guy dressed up in Packer gear. He then finds his way near the locker room and starts asking the players for their gloves. I tried to explain to him how they’re not supposed to give away their gloves, but he said the players were tossing them to kids in the stands. I was going to mention that he was in his 50s and then I realized, why am I having a discussion with a guy dressed entirely in Packer gear.

Sometimes it’s just best to not say anything at all.

  36. RedZone November 25, 2012 8:32 am

    ST is Paipai okay?

  37. kev-1 November 25, 2012 8:33 am

    Stephen Tsai,

If you read my entire comment, I do say that I think the comment was a bit misworded. I also give him credit for a good performance in a follow up post. I’m not reading too much into it. Just found it interesting. Even Robert Kekaula commented on it.

  38. Shoko November 25, 2012 8:33 am

Guess I’m reading to much into it. I have a bad habit of doing that.

  39. kev-1 November 25, 2012 8:33 am

And I am definitely NOT saying he isn’t a good guy.

  40. Shoko November 25, 2012 8:34 am

What site are the jerseys being auctioned off?

  41. gmahoney November 25, 2012 8:34 am

    Shoko, you are right!

Here’s the link to the current bids on 61 jerseys now up for auction.

    http://www.uhrainbowtique.com/auction/products.asp?catid=7

Rumor has it, more jerseys will be added and a select number of the helmets. Money for the jerseys go to the Wounded Warrior Project and proceeds from the helmets go to UH.

  42. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2012 8:34 am

    Hmm.

    Nobody ever calls me “Mister.”

Well, except for that guy holding a cardboard sign at the Pali/Kaneohe junction.

  43. gobows November 25, 2012 8:35 am

side note on the harding joke: the DOD is partnering with australia and may have some USMC stationed in australia on a permanent basis in the near future.

nice seeing the offense running 4 & 5 wide. but why have joey out near the sideline in the redzone on an empty back set, seems odd.

joey really hit the holes quicker last night, it was good to see.

unlv should have had 4 or 5 int’s, had the ball in their hands, good thing they suck.

  44. Shoko November 25, 2012 8:35 am

Ryan Hall have a broken finger?

  45. kev-1 November 25, 2012 8:36 am

If I were him, I would be feeling a little “take that-ish” after facing so much criticism.

BTW . . . is his leg okay? After the presser, he seemed to have a tough time standing and walking off the stage. Either he is sore, or his knee brace needs oil.

  46. Shoko November 25, 2012 8:36 am

Thanks Gmahoney. Lets see how Dunnachie’s jersey is doing. I think alot of the seniors will generate some decent revenue.

  47. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2012 8:38 am

    Kevin-1

    Gotcha.

I told Robert the same thing. Big guy gets a little emotional.

Anyway, I saw Kekaula’s son and daughter. I said to the daughter, wow, your brother just shot up and is taller than you.

Kekaula’s son looks at me and says: I’m taller than you, too.

  48. Old School Dave November 25, 2012 8:40 am

Just great to see smiles on the faces of the players and coaches.

UNLV beat AFA and New Mexico coming into the game and were favored to beat UH. On paper, they were the better team. Bobby Hauck looked like one frustrated coach. I think the UNLV admin will back him at least for another season, from what I’ve read.

If not mistaken, I think Hauck got a contract extension last year that extends him to 2015. I think he’s safe for awhile.

Similar to DeWayne Walker, who I thought would certainly be canned, but I recently found out that he, too, received a contract extension to 2016 last December.

  65. d1shima November 25, 2012 8:59 am

Yep. I asked The Former Coach about it once. He said Ellison’s is really a much more run-oriented offense. (the tackles really do a LOT of cut blocks) But the basic R&S concepts are all there.

…for you Graves-diggers you will be frustrated to know that nearly all the passes in the original R&S were designed to be thrown on the run! Passes planned down to the step.

My dad, a Korean War Vet, died this season, wanting only to get to one more game. His health wouldn’t allow this to happen. Being at last night’s game with my step son in his “wounded warrior” jersey lifted my spirits. Sure, he texted his fricken girlfriend the whole game but still, he understood what was going on. A whole crowd enjoying themselves. People forgetting their problems for a couple of hours. I wasn’t depending on this win for my will to live but it sure brought me peace to scream like a maniac and hug a bunch of drunken strangers each time we scored.

  70. kapakahi November 25, 2012 9:02 am

Credit to Warriors for playing an inspired game last night, but the Rebels looked like they were running on empty last night….after playing a brutal schedule….being on the road 6 of the last 9 games….13 straight games without any bye week.

Neuheisel knows the feeling after last season’s shutout blowout loss to their cross-town rival.

First congrats to the boys on a good win. Second what a special game this was too bad there were not more military there. Also thanks to Under Armour for supplying the whole team with the uniforms, so my question for Chow is, being that this a a special game dedicated to our fighting men and women and Under Armour supplied uniforms for the entire team why didn’t you let the entire 105 suit up for this game. You keep saying it’s all about the team but I sorry this doesn’t show that.

Not really trying to be negative but when it comes to how they treat the student athletes it matters to me.

I hope last night’s performance will help the recruiting. The biggest thing is that we need a playmaking QB. The Holy Grail. Nobody in the program right now. Is Zwahlen the answer? I’m convinced Johnny Football is the Heisman winner. The guy is a magician or a Houdini. He’s certainly the most exciting.

I predict the Irish will play the Crimson Tide in the Natl Championship. Alabama will be giving some points.

    …so far, a Punt Fest

  104. Kevin November 25, 2012 11:00 am

    26-2.

Beats the top team in the nation at the time.

Only losses to defending champs UCLA and a 5 set loss to CAL.

Attendance for ONE regional at the Stan Sheriff Center WILL surpass the entire Omaha Regional itself.

NCAA is bunch of dumb-founded jackasses that stumble and fumble over the most logical decisions.

    Get chance for one more.

Who said Chow is inflexible? He had the team RUN out of the tunnel to start the game.

Agree that Chow should loosen up his view on having an uncluttered sideline. Should suit up everyone for the last game.

Liked sending Joey long on two pass plays. He wasn’t open on the first but was wide open on the second. Respect Chow’s ability to draw up new plays or is it he has volumes of play books to pick plays from.

Take away Joey’s TD run from his and Sterling’s stats what’s left shows a need for a back with speed and some power. Have to fignt myself to block out the thought that Gregory would’ve have an impact on the outcome of the AF game.

Hope this game is a confidence booster and not a “big head” inducer. There’s just one week of pracice left in the season. Everyone should be intense and focused. This should be the most spirited practice of the year. Can’t practice with the feeling that they’e finally “arrived.”

  107. WarriorMojo November 25, 2012 11:37 am

The NCAA volleyball tournament and its questionable seeding is an example of why Hawaii people need to stand up for Hawaii. You want to go play in south bend, that’s your choice, but you aren’t representing Hawaii as far as I’m concerned.

  108. SteveM November 25, 2012 11:56 am

    Good noonish everyone!

Walking on the concourse after the game, someone behind me was shouting, “Keep the uniforms for next week” (or similar). As he passed me I noticed his distinctive ti leaf headwear… and got to meet laulau head in person. 🙂

  109. jeezy33 November 25, 2012 12:03 pm

SS still holds on to the ball way too long in my opinion. It’s almost like were gonna hit a home run with him because if he has time to throw, he’s going deep or hes gonna take a big hit or sack.

Saw a few plays where his eyes are on his 1st read (stutz) way too long. Than by the time he goes to his 2nd progression, he’s knocked down.

Still, nice bounce back performance. Just really needs to make quicker reads for his own health and for the sake of sustaining drives.

  110. Shoko November 25, 2012 12:13 pm

Sheesh, talk about mood swings experienced with this Niners game.

Long day! Took a longer-than-a-glance look at today’s title, and the first thing that popped into my head is…

“… Late December, back in ’63…”

One of those songs that tug on the heartstrings, bringing back a flood of memories from the mid-to-late 70’s! Mahalo, ST, for the walk back in time! Always fun to reminisce!

  134. ai-eee-soos November 25, 2012 2:22 pm

Alex should be happy – he made plenty kala the last 6 years.

Will make plenty more if the Niners resign him.

  135. Derek November 25, 2012 2:44 pm

I believe Colin Kaepernick has the “it” factor. The 49er coaches know this. He is a playmaker and he is showing he is making big plays. Harbaugh is playing him now so that he is getting lots of game experience. By playoff time, he should be well tested under real fire. Alex Smith is a valuable member of the team. You need 2 good QBs just in case one goes down. The Niners are in good shape. Brandon Jacobs is now ready. LaMichael James is just waiting for his chance too. First round draft pick A.J. Jenkins can’t even smell the game, but he too is ready. The Niners are loaded.

Chizik, O’Brien, Tedford, John L. smith, are all gone. Is Leach next.

  136. ai-eee-soos November 25, 2012 2:50 pm

  138. 3-Prong November 25, 2012 3:15 pm

Watching the Kahuku/ Punahou replay. Physical high school ball. These teams should be ranked higher nationally. Doubt that mainland teams can match the pounding.

  139. d1shima(Galaxy 'd) November 25, 2012 3:39 pm

    Nice!

  140. Warrior Dave November 25, 2012 3:39 pm

Not sold yet on Kaepernick. Defense bailed out the offense with 2 pick 6’s. Kaepernick’s problem in college was throwing the long ball with touch. U tip I see several of those, this juror is undecided.

See the players run out got me pumped up before the game. Small change, great outcome. Wish they continue this practice going forward. My wish list for next year is the return on names on jerseys. Need to build the fan base with fans being able to identify with the players.

  141. jeezy33 November 25, 2012 3:40 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

What a good sleep after last night’s victory. I really wanted them to make up for the loss last season at UNLV. Warriors really stunk that night, why?, don’t know but it left a bad taste in the mouth. Waited for this one and they did it! Kept yelling for Schroeder to “let it go!” when he was looking for a receiver. Luckily the O Line held for the most part. UNLV looked like us up to this point in the season. How did they beat AFA and New Mexico??? We looked so good… Thanks, Warriors! SSG S. Hesch was also a highlight. His renditions of patriotic songs was most inspiring. He sang it like it was supposed to be sung and not all the fancy crap some singers try to infuse because they lack the vocal chops. SSG Hesch can sing!!

  147. ai-eee-soos November 25, 2012 3:44 pm

    … Looooking good !!!

  156. kapakahi November 25, 2012 4:14 pm

    #154,

JMHO that Sale could be a perfect hybrid DE for Warriors in TK’s defensive alignments and schemes.

Just like the DT position being a big need area in recruiting, JMHO that so is the hybrid DE spot. With Paipai gone after this season…..and Tavita Woodard and Jordan Pu’u-Robinson seniors next season…..and former signee & potential JC transfer Quenton Brown’s status is still uncertain, that depth at the hybrid DE spot is looking a little thin next season.

JMHO that Sale would probably be in the mix of the competition at that hybrid DE spot.

  157. Wes'side Warrior November 25, 2012 4:19 pm

    Welcome, Kennedy!!!

    I’m wondering…

Maybe the two happiest in the lockers were happy, because we just got a glimpse of our future, when everyone is on the same page of music! Granted, there were mistakes and several near-INT’s, and we still need to open up better holes for our RB’s, but consistently moving the chains is oh so sweet! And shoring up our defense is always a plus!

USC in da hale next year! Getting excited already! Plus, we’re playing for the Commander’s Cup next year too! Oh sorry, getting TOO excited!

I wonder Tulimasealii was named after Presidemt John Kennedy, or maybe Kennedy Cortez. I agree, Chow should go back to having the names on the jersey. Chow, be democratic, ask the players. Are you a conservative Repunlican? This is the 21st century.

    #164,

Pretty good bet that he’s named after JFK…..since his cousin (who plays RB/DE/LB for West Anchorage HS, Alaska) is named Lincoln.

    http://www.maxpreps.com/athletes/HQdTkAMfXEaN6B8BJfOFbw/football-fall-12/profile-lincoln-tulimasealii.htm

  169. Pauoa Boy November 25, 2012 5:39 pm

Das a huge get right thurr. Tulimasealii is a beast and would definitely help bolster the DLine. Samia, Friel, and now Kennedy could do some damage. I think Kennedy is up there with Savaiianaea as being the top prospect in the state. Pagano is mean too but Tulimaseali’i is a menace.

Congrats to my bruddah Chad Owens for winning the CFL Grey Cup Championship. Record breaking season, CFL Most Outstanding player, and now a CFL Champion! The other team focused on locking him down but he still got a TD and had a nice return in the game.

  170. Garret November 25, 2012 5:43 pm

Welcome to the Warriors Kennedy Tulimasealii! Wow, he is a *huge* commit for the coaching staff! Tulimasealii is an example of a top local recruit who everybody will want and the UH coaches have a chance to get–they worked hard and convinced him that UH was the best choice for him.

HUGE. It is hard to imagine a bigger commit for the Warriors in a long time when you factor in the need at the position and the timing of the commit…hopefully a pied piper effect will happen and this commit will help many others choose UH.

  171. Garret November 25, 2012 5:44 pm

Congratulations to Chad Owens! I’ve been posting about him here since he first tried out for the CFL and have enjoyed following him since he started at UH. All of his sacrifices and hard work sure have paid off.

  172. Garret November 25, 2012 5:45 pm

This is an amazing turnaround…going from NO bowl games since 1972 to a decent chance at a BCS bowl game!

The Golden Flashes are No. 17 in the BCS standings and just five spots away from earning the non-AQ automatic berth. This is unprecedented because this is a Kent State program that is going to its first bowl game since 1972.

Given the subject matter, jm2375, you can’t say what you did enough.

Say it’s time, get all “minimum” regarding NCAA presence for women’s volleyball here on out. Do the bare minimum when their officials come down here when it comes to women’s volleyball. Their hotels, cars getting comped when UH don’t have to do it? That should end. They need somethin’ from UH? Give it to ’em the last possible minute. Question, question, question every NCAA request. Don’t make it easy for ’em.

Send the fu(kin’ message. Stugatz and vaffanculo to you, NCAA.

Have to echo what everyone has already said . . .

Great recruit! Great win for Chad Owens! Great weekend!

  186. kev-1 November 25, 2012 8:04 pm

You know what the Wahine V-ball team needs to do? Go out there and give everybody lickens! They get disrespected every year at seeding time. How about smacking everybody around and bringing home that title to stick it to the NCAA!

  187. Derek November 25, 2012 8:08 pm

USC will get an inexperienced QB next season. Robert Woods might opt for the NFL draft. Silas Redd gone. Safety McDonald gone too. Wonder if Lane Kiffen will survive. It was not a good season for the Trojans. 7-5 is bad for a program like that. Our Warriors will have some confidence.

Kapakahi, re 158 and the hybrid DE/LB I’m looking forward to seeing former LB Poly & UCLA stud Iuta Tepa

  202. gobows November 25, 2012 9:56 pm

105 game jerseys for auction? that’s bull, i only counted fifty something suited up at the game. i don’t know what kind style that where half the team no suit up for a home game. seems ridiculous for the guys to practice all week and then they don’t get to have the honor of suiting up with the team. i know get injured players, but to have around 50 players not suited up is questionable. look strange when the visiting team get more players than the home team.

  203. kapakahi November 25, 2012 10:28 pm

    BigWave,

Re: 203. Yup…..forgot about Tepa. BUT would still be nice to get Sale.

  204. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 25, 2012 10:35 pm

    D1,

Great to hear. I hope we land some from the sunshine state. Demorest was excited about creating a pipeline.

  205. kapakahi November 25, 2012 10:41 pm

    #182 & 187,

Both Joey and Lister will be redshirt juniors next season.

No doubt that Wily would be a great RB get for the Warrior 2013 Signing Class!

JMHO that Crusader RB Adam Noga (nephew of Niko, Al, Pete & George) should draw consideration from Warriors as possible Class of 2014 RB prospect. Just gotta work on resolving some ball security issues….like Joey is doing.

  206. gobows November 25, 2012 10:46 pm

ncaa selection committee is a bunch of crack addicts. how the hell does kentucky (20-10, 4th in sec) get seeded #16 and not hawaii (25-2). if kentucky deserved it, then why the hell is florida at 25-4 (beat kentucky 2x) seeded #14. the 4th place sec team gets seeded, but not the 2nd and 3rd place teams. and the kicker is louisville seeded #10. wtf? louisville hasn’t beaten anybody significant. they lost to penn state, texas, and notre dame all at home. the big east is a weak volleyball conference period.

  207. manoa#1 November 25, 2012 10:49 pm

According to his dad wiley is leaning more to join mariota up in duck country.

  208. Derek November 25, 2012 10:55 pm

Tyler Taumua wouldn’t be bad. Hope he can qualify.

  209. kapakahi November 25, 2012 11:02 pm

    #210,

FYI….Taumua was a frequent attendee at Warrior weekday afternoon practices this past Spring.

Congrats to Kennedy on his choice….won’t regret it. It is OK to be excited about this weeks past win….the alternative—-had enough of that. The spirit will burn bright for the coming months and this weeks game….get healthy, get talented and get on with it.

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Great news about Tulimasealii! Can’t wait to see him in a Warrior uniform. Throw in Kahuku O-line commit Wa’a and we’ve picked up the top two Big Boys outta this year’s class. If the rumors about Wily are true, that would give the Warriors three of the state’s top recruits!

  218. Da Punchbowl Kid November 26, 2012 5:56 am

    Mornin’ d1, maddog and duffer!

  219. 3-Prong November 26, 2012 5:56 am

208 gobows: actually they are not drug addicts, I will bet you that if you analyze selection committee membership it will actually make a lot of sense. Why else would Big 10 teams get free rides to the Final 4 year after year while they make Hawaii have to go through the gauntlet to get anywhere. Its very political. Remember USC last year?

  220. d1shima November 26, 2012 5:57 am

Two recent (808) HS’ers win awards at UofO. Hopefully, Tulimasealii”s commit starts a trend that keeps the best here!

Senior linebacker Michael Clay, as well as redshirt freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota, were honored as the University of Oregon’s Most Outstanding Players at the school’s annual football awards reception Sunday afternoon in the Club at Autzen in Autzen Stadium.

In addition, freshman defensive lineman DeForest Buckner was honored with the Len Casanova Award, given to the Ducks’ first-year player who best exemplifies the athletic ideals and inspiration of the University’s former head coach and athletic director, Len Casanova.

Transcripts of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball seeding meetings should be made availabe to the public. This is just shameful! Someone from that group owes Hawai’i an explanation at least!

  222. 3-Prong November 26, 2012 6:08 am

DPK: yes, as Shoji said in the post selection interview” its not a transparent process”. That’s an understatement.

  223. Manoa November 26, 2012 6:09 am

Great game– took my former neighbor, an all conference player in college, and his houseguest, a former college and NFL assistant with family in Hawaii.

We saw all the changes that Chow has made to the offense to open it up– all the fans asking for a wide open offense got it on Saturday. Chow ran 4 and 5 receiver sets much of the game, ran the tight ends as receivers instead of blockers, ran adjusting routes similar to the run and shoot, ran Schroeder out of the shotgun and the pistol instead of under center– even at the 8 yard line, ran a spread formation most of the game, ran the backs out as receivers instead of blockers, ran running plays to the outside and off tackle instead of just the middle, had the backs cutting back on runs, ran the wildcat with Iosefa handing off and Schroeder and Stutz as lead blockers!! Ran Mike Edwards on a sweep to the outside– there is your outside run. Ran two trick plays in the flea flicker and the swinging gate/muddle huddle. Adjusted the trap and zone blocking to make them more effective (still need to block the linebackers and safeties better– so close, but a touch off on timing).

Chow was reborn– he was on the sideline without a headset for much of the game, so even the play calling was changes. Cannot say the man does not make changes.

  224. Shoko November 26, 2012 6:58 am

    Morning folks!

  225. Pomai November 26, 2012 7:04 am

Just looked at all the jersey’s up for auction and as of now #13 Justin Clapp is leading all, high bed is now $610.00, must be a proud dad bidding that high 🙂 coming in at second is #42 Paipai Falemalu at $500.00. Looks like an average of #300.00 a shirt.
