    …sorry 😳

    Joe Correia started for Menlo.

  24. westwind November 16, 2012 5:24 am

Have no faith in MRC Greenwood/BOR/Chow

  25. Bigwave96744 November 16, 2012 5:24 am

BTW, the win streak starts TODAY 🙂

  26. d1shima November 16, 2012 5:26 am

    …OTOH, no mo Ding Dongs!

we lose that Twinkie in our eye.

  27. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 5:26 am

    Grease is the word.

  28. Chicken Grease November 16, 2012 5:27 am

Wonder (pardon the pun) if M.R.C. “Mercy” Greenwood is related to Lee Greenwood of God Bless the USA fame.

  29. Hilo Moon November 16, 2012 5:31 am

If Masoli started at Ol’ Miss, would he be the only one in the bunch to start at 2 D1 schools? That is some distinction for any high school!

  30. LizKauai (iPad) November 16, 2012 5:32 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Yea Bigwave!

    Winning streak does begin today!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  31. Chicken Grease November 16, 2012 5:34 am

McNamara, on PBS’s Insights last night, mentioned that the next UH Athletic Director should be announced early (if a Grease heard correctly, first week of) December.

  32. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 5:36 am

Everytime I see M.R.C., I think K-E-Y and start singing the Mickey Mouse song.

  33. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 5:36 am

OK gangees, ready for Da Spark to lead us to #2? Go Warriors!

  34. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 5:38 am

    33: ST, I think R-A-T……Hehe

  35. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 5:39 am

    32

  36. Chicken Grease November 16, 2012 5:42 am

A few of the multiples of 5 (read: “I Am Number Five”) got the right idea today: #s 25 Bigwave96744 and 30 LizKauai, right on!!!

Mr. Tsai — can you see an M.R.C. “Mercy” Greenwood doing a Glee-ish skit, and a decidedly Mickey Mouse Club skit at that?

M.R.C. . . . see you when you subpoena me for more questions, Donna Mercado Kim . . .” Eek.

  37. Tom Clarke November 16, 2012 5:44 am

See some of you tonight. Go Warriors.

  38. BigWave96744 November 16, 2012 5:45 am

Everytime I see M.R.C., I think of the Fonz referring to Richie’s dad as Mr. C.

  39. BigWave96744 November 16, 2012 5:46 am

But now ST got me into the Mickey Mouse Club

  40. BigWave96744 November 16, 2012 5:49 am

Oh, Bulla would have won the contest today but he was either in traffic, on the racketball court, in early morning prayer or knocking some skulls and protecting the locals in Waikiki.

  41. Chicken Grease November 16, 2012 5:50 am

    E’rytime a Grease sees “M.R.C.” He thinks of RUN-DMC!!!!!

    It’s tricky

    To answer informational hearing questions

When you don’t want to give

The truth to the people of Hawaii

    And hide behind lawyers

    And demand subpoena in order

    To answer more questions

    It’s trickyyyy!!

    Tricky, tricky, tricky, tricky!!!!!

  42. NYUHTX November 16, 2012 5:58 am

  52. kev-1 November 16, 2012 6:56 am

Go Warriors! Bring that trophy home so we can throw in couple bags poi!

My dilemma? Can’t watch the game live, so I have to tape it. I won’t be able to sit down and watch it until around the time of the b-ball game. Too old school to own a DVR. If I wait until after the b-ball game to watch the football game, I will likely have already heard the outcome. What to do? What to do?

Ahhh . . . the dilemma of a UH fan. If we come out of it with two wins, I will attempt to do a back flip. Go Warriors!!!!

    Today’s rule: Repeat? Delete.

  54. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 7:41 am

OK, trivia people: Who was the UH player nicknamed Spud McKenzie?

Hint: he has something to do with Air Force game.

  55. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 7:58 am

Don’t tell me we have to wait until Bulla?

  56. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 7:59 am

Meanwhile, which UH president looked like Professor Fun?

  57. Otto November 16, 2012 8:03 am

    #56 – Al Simone

  58. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:06 am

    Otto is on it.

Plus, he has a name dyslexics can appreciate.

  59. A-House November 16, 2012 8:08 am

    MRC Greenwood:

jus my opinion, but she does not deserve any pay if/when she leaves.

She damaged her own reputation with the “flimsy” answers she gave at the Senate hearings on why she put Donovan on leave with pay – no one defamed, her IMHO – some may have said he is not a leader or does not know how to be a good leader and this is an opinion statement

let’s see, what is the definition of “defamation”? to utter an untrue statement in public which tarnishes ones status – hey, people tell me I’m a dummie all the time – is this defamation?

  60. Independent Thinker November 16, 2012 8:09 am

Like D1, I am happy today. We get chance!

  61. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:09 am

Back to Spuds, whose featured in a UHFan808 song.

  62. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:12 am

    Independent

You should be happy every day, dude.

    You are a dude, right?

I think you made a mah jong reference yesterday, which means you might be an 85-year-old Chinese woman.

  63. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:14 am

    Neighbor:

Um, you do know it’s spelled “dummy”?

  64. RedZone November 16, 2012 8:16 am

I agree with A=House. MRC herself said that she has a foot in mouth problem.

  65. Dan-O November 16, 2012 8:18 am

Hmmm….I’ll guess Robert Lan? He of the the infamous fumble/intercepted pitch touchdown against AFA?

  66. Independent Thinker November 16, 2012 8:19 am

tsai, thank you for your concern. worry about yourself, my brother. I’m fine. Don’t know what you are talking about, but I did quote pink floyd yesterday, and if you took that for a mah jong reference, that’s on you, buddy.

  67. Kekoa November 16, 2012 8:20 am

    Stretch!

I like your choice better. I was thinking MRC reminds me of Church Lady. Sounds like she carries the same attitude in her carpet bag too!

  68. kitsunegari November 16, 2012 8:22 am

80+ year old Asian woman or a late 50s creeper that claims he cannot go wahine volleyball to take care of ill parents but yet has time to make threats to sports writers?

  69. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:24 am

    Dan-O is correct.

  70. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:26 am

Dan-O is now the only blogger who can use the phrase “I’ve been a UH fan for 30 years …”

  71. Kevin November 16, 2012 8:26 am

    Twinkies are dead.

We are living in the last days, dont deny it! 😆

In the words of Kanoa Leahey:

No twinkies or cupcakes? Who will the SEC schedule for non-conference games now???

  72. Independent Thinker November 16, 2012 8:27 am

kits, get a life, dude. learn to read while you are at it. thank you.

tsai insults me, and i can’t reply?

    grow up.

  73. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:29 am

Pink Floyd has been around long enough to have 80-year-old fans.

  74. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 8:30 am

    Kevin:

    That’s pretty funny.

  75. Independent Thinker November 16, 2012 8:31 am

Ok, tsai, you win this one, ha ha ha, soooo funny, yes, you got me, i’m an octogenarian woman, ha haha. thanks.

  76. Independent Thinker November 16, 2012 8:33 am

gotta go, am still happy about our chances today, and that won’t change.

What does this mean ? Today’s rule: Repeat? Delete.

  92. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 9:00 am

Here’s an excerpt what I posted late last night…

2012 is a washout year… nobody expected it to be this bad, but UH gotta take its lumps at some point…

For those complaining about Chow as a coach…. what were you expecting this team to be if McMackin was riding out his final year on contract??? I’m sure Graves could run the offense, but he’s a significant dropoff from Moniz and his only win last year was vs an awful Tulane and Shane Austin had to come in and save the win.

If Mack were still here and taking into account the defensive performance (which would be the similar because there wasn’t any change to the defensive scheme)… UH still loses to USC, UNR, BYU, SDSU, Fresno & Boise for sure, UH still beats Lamar for sure, and UH might have beaten CSU and UNM… That means Mack would probably by 3-6 at this point in the season of you count CSU and UNM as wins.

Folks, 3-6 isn’t getting it done and certainly is not going to earn Mack a contract extension. Thus, UH would be searching for coach at the end of 2012. Even worse, having a lame duck coach is the worst possible scenario for any team/franchise in any sport (college or professional). A lame duck coach basically renders the entire recruiting class hostage and most recruits will not commit to a team where they know the coach isn’t going to be there when they arrive.

It’s no coincidence that UH had 10 wins and co-WAC champions in 2010, and the 2010 UH roster was led by many of Jones’ upperclassmen recruits.

WR: Salas, Pilares & Pollard; OL: Hansen, Ginlack, Thomas & Letuli; DL: Purcell & Meatoga; LB: Lolotai & Paredes; DB: Torres & Silva were all Jones’ recruits starting in 2010. Moniz, Green, Tiwanak, Bradley, Tuipulotu, Umu, Brown, Davis & Bryant were the other starters (ALL TRANSFERS recruited by Mack). Not a single McMackin prep recruit was a regular starter during the co-WAC championship year.

    * 2010 was Mack’s 3rd year as coach and had ZERO prep recruits starting.

** Looking back at 2009’s roster and stats, Mack had ZERO prep recruits starting.

** As the last of Jones’ recruits graduated, so did Mack’s best transfer recruits. Mack’s poor HS recruiting got exposed in 2011 and now the team is suffering because of the lack of quality upperclassmen.

  93. Last Call November 16, 2012 9:02 am

I was in the Air Force for 12 years and I really enjoyed it.

  94. Dan-O November 16, 2012 9:03 am

Thanks ST…..but been fan for some 40 years now, since I was six…..still remember the old Honolulu Stadium days.

Besides Elam’s field goals that beat AFA back in the early 90’s, the only other memorable play against them was Lan’s defensive touchdown.

  95. Kevin November 16, 2012 9:04 am

There will be NO second coming of Rap Reiplenger.

    There is only ONE.

  96. Kevin November 16, 2012 9:05 am

Willie Maunawili would get more votes than Bu…

  97. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 9:05 am

    pomai:

    UH wins 28-27

Keys for UH victory (and they are actually realitic):

    * UH must run the ball — Air Force has a poor run defense

** UH must win turnover battle

*** UH must force Air Force into FGs in red zone — I assume UH will be giving up a bunch of yards, so making a couple 3rd down stops will be key.

**** Total time to play game will be under 2hrs and 45 min.

  98. cocobean November 16, 2012 9:06 am

    Air Force is beatable.

Power ball and play action. Hope Chow runs Joey more out ot the I than the gun. Seems to me, he’s a tad slower getting into gear from the gun. From the I he’ll have a running start going into the line.

    Just an opinion.

  99. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 9:14 am

Another key to victory will be the weather… It’s actually suppose to be pretty nice weather at kickoff. At least that won’t be working against UH. If the weather were 30’s/20’s and snow or wind, then I think Air Force has a major advantage.

Forecast = Low 40’s, light breeze, no rain/snow. It will be a “clear, crisp night” as they say

  100. Last Call November 16, 2012 9:19 am

The Air Force was my first experience with SOS and occasionally I still make it for breakfast with scrambled eggs.

  101. jm2375 November 16, 2012 9:24 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    GO WARRIORS!!

    GO WAHINE!!

Kekoa – I was thinking she looks more like Prof Umbrage in “Harry Potter”. You know, the one in the pink dress…

  102. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 9:25 am

    #98… dead on!

Iosefa and Lister should be the order of the night. Try and make the game easy for Higgins.

The less UH passes, the better (wow, that was weird to say). Mainly because pass protection has been bad all year. If Higgins is gets constant pressure, like Schroeder, then he’s going to make mistakes, especially in his 1st start.

I think UH easily covers (+22) vs Air Force. I may even throw a little $$ on the money line. Air Force has lost to some pretty bad teams this year and are (1-6) as a favorite ATS this year.

  103. Kevin November 16, 2012 9:26 am

    I like grits.

  104. Hawkpeter November 16, 2012 9:26 am

Someone needs to draw a link between the Earth passing safely through the tail of the comet Tempel-Tuttle and UH passing safely on the idea of playing Temple for the 13th game.

    http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/smartnews/2012/11/this-weekend-debris-of-a-dying-comet-should-produce-extremely-bright-meteors/

  105. Kevin November 16, 2012 9:27 am

Grits with biscuits and sausage gravy… then back to bed! 😎

  106. Seawalker November 16, 2012 9:27 am

When Chow announced Higgins as the starting QB, the point-spread dropped 1-1/2 to 2 points. That’s huge. Does someone know something and not saying it? Should be a close game. Let’s Go Bows!!!!

Anybody got the link to today’s game?

  107. Dan-O November 16, 2012 9:31 am

So much focus on the offense with Higgins starting….BUT, its the defense that has me worried. We have NOT defended the option well. New Mexico’s back up QB ran for a 70 yard TD, Boise’s back up QB ran one in near the goal line untouched for a TD last week.

Gimmick offenses (option, pistol, etc) have given Kaumeyer problems. He didnt see those in the NFL.

If we fall behind early by two touchdowns, it could be a real LONG day…but short game, time wise.

  108. frank November 16, 2012 9:34 am

Hi is leaf on the travel team and if so is he playing today.

  109. jeezy33 November 16, 2012 9:34 am

Hard to take Former Athlete serious when he refers to coach Cavanaugh by calling him Callahan the other day and thinks Paipai has another season

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  111. SteveM November 16, 2012 9:39 am

Last Call — I first had SOS in the service too. I prefer the hamburger type over the real chipped beef one. Nowadays, I order it whenever I see it on a breakfast menu.

  112. maddog50 November 16, 2012 9:41 am

Mike Edwards returns one……Jeremy runs and throws well….John and Joey along with Sterling crank out some yards and D plays a little better than it did last week with better FP—-Finish the game and enjoy the ride home—Go Warriors

  113. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 9:41 am

Yeah, former UH athlete clearly has a grudge against Mack. Still waiting for your analysis of who Mack inherited from JJ as the starting QB in 2008 or even the starting receivers. In other words until you answer WHY Mack went so heavily for JCs your opinion seems a bit lacking.

  114. obachan November 16, 2012 9:44 am

  115. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 9:44 am

So, anyway, grease or anybody else: is the asian Dangerous Liasions worth seeing? Notice that it’s opening for a limited run this weekend. The original, not counting Valmont, is one of my all-time faves.

  116. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 9:46 am

Since we’re doing this, every time I see MRC I always think of Roy Orbison’s “MERCY!” growl in “Pretty Woman”.

  117. gobows November 16, 2012 9:46 am

#94 how about the two 70+ yard td runs by anthony edgar in the early 80’s. that guy was fast.

  119. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 9:56 am

What time is the game today. 3:30 or 4:30?

  120. Dan-O November 16, 2012 9:57 am

gobows…..yup, agreed! But Elam’s field goals saved us that day, with our third string QB, Rodney Glover as the starter….as Carter and Jasper were out with injuries. I think the final score was 6-3?

Lan’s touchdown was so unexpected….AFA was basically just running the clock out.

  121. lowtone123 November 16, 2012 9:57 am

Didn’t Jeremy Higgins start when he was at Utah State? Anyway I got J. Higgins, C. Higgins, Gesser, Chang, Arceneaux, Mariota, Masoli, Correia…who else? Hao played at UH but don’t believe he start any games.

  122. Dan-O November 16, 2012 9:57 am

    4:30 game time….

  123. Bryson November 16, 2012 9:58 am

    Former UH Athlete,

We have switched defensive schemes in regards to the type of coverage we ran…and how can you say the defense would be jus as bad when Aranda’s Utah State D is doing well…

And if you look back to when Mack was a D-Co he had successful D’s wherever he went Hawaii also caused a ton of turnovers in the past which this defense hasn’t been able duplicate.

I feel if the old staff were still in place our record would be much better than the 3-6 you give them credit for. Graves might not have been the starter it could have been Stump Godfrey and with Rolo’s play calling we definetly would be putting up more points in each game offensively cause remember our ppg is a total average of all scores if you were to look at actual offensive scoring we are horrible probably around the 10ppg mark.

Mack was building a foundation which is why his last 2 years of recruiting we were hitting the HS’s hard he was building depth with younger classes.

My question is this what if next year is a complete turn around from this season? We will have a lot of the same starters in place next season then what would the reason be for the lackluster record this season cause lack of talent wouldn’t be an excuse anymore…

  124. haka November 16, 2012 10:08 am

  126. cocobean November 16, 2012 10:21 am

The thing I don’t like about MRC is she lives by her motto, ” the buck doesn’t stop here.”

Another thing I don’t like is the media alway seeking comments from Slom and Mercardo-Kim regarding UH matters. They get more free image building time than all the other legislators combined.

You can reserve it (as I did) on Netflix.

  128. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 10:23 am

Since JJ knew it was his last year, recruiting wasn’t a priority. When Mack was hired, he didn’t have much of a chance to recruit, so ended up recruiting a lot of JC players. Not knowing who would be the next coach after JJ and even losing, hurt UH in keeping the recruited players or players they tried to recruit. Not having everybody on the staff recruiting wasn’t a help either. This is one of things that I like so far in Chow’s tenure. He has a full year to recruit and every one recruits. We may lose some recruits because of the bad record though.

    The fly boys are beatable.

The good news, most of the offense and defense return next year. The bad news, most of the offense and defense return next year.

Kidding aside, as bad as we look this year, we shouldn’t have the same look next year. Players should be bigger, faster, stronger if they do their due diligence in conditioning and in the weight room. Plus the whole team will have the thing we lack the most this year – experience.

  147. jonj November 16, 2012 11:14 am

    UH athlete

ur killing me with your backing of chow and hating on Mack! I bet with your assesment of Graves you were one of the fools who hated on Moniz in 2009 when he got thrown into the fire after being Qb3. Im not sure if u remember how that turned out??? next year 2010 we went 10-4. on the 2010 roster how many of JJ’s recruits were actually on that roster?!!? 2006 class bryson ginlack, greg salas, spencer smith, kenny estes 2007 Vaughn Meatoga, clayton laurel, austin hansen, m. lefiti, kealoha pilares, ostrowski. Thats 10 guys! the others were walkons that miano developed! you saying 10 of Junes recruits made that whole season??? we all kno JJ never recruited Preps well and he lived off the JC players. For the most part Mack got us going away from the JC route and thats why we are so young these days! if you wanna play the injury bug game with Chow, we could also say the same about 2009(qb1 and 2 injured) and 2011 (just as much as this year). Its ashame that we will never really be able to see mack recruits develope since Chow is just throwing them under the bus! Also 2010 JHT, GDL and billy ray started. 2011 mike sellers, trevor davis, dave lefotu, sean shigematsu, joey iosefa. 2012 will gregory, justin vele, lance williams, ken van ackren, blake muir, ben clarke. <— freshmen mack recruits starting.

  148. jonj November 16, 2012 11:15 am

The problem this year is Scheme and Coaching! It most def wouldnt be a 3-6 yr with david graves and cast running the R n S. It actually would have been more of a 10-4 type 2010 season and I wish I could actually be saying this but a possible BCS 2013 season with

QB – Sr. David graves (3yr starter)

Wrs – Sr. Billy ray(4yr starter), Jr. trevor davis (3yr), Sr. chris gant, jr. scott harding

Rb- Jr. joey Iosefa (3 yr) and So. Will gregory

OL – Sr chauncy makaina (3yr) jr. david lefotu (3yr), jr. jordan loffler (3yr), so. blake muir and so. ben clarke.

everyone of these guys would be on the same page with 3yrs with Rolo at offensive coordinator not to mention some other guys i think would contribute greatly Chinedu amadi, allen sampson, justin clapp, kody afusia

    Defense

DL – Sr. Tavita woodard, Jr. moses samia, sr. Siasau Matagiese, Sr. Jordan Puurobinson

LB – Sr. Brendan Daley, Sr. Art laurel(3yr starteer), jr.TJ taimatuia

DB – Sr. mike edwards(3 yr starter), Sr. JHT (4yr starter), Jr. Mike Sellers(3yr starter), Jr. Bubba pouelunna

DB’s would have been beasting it next year as well as the defensive front. notibles

calen friel, marcus malepeai, GDL, justin vele, dee maggit, lance williams, ken van ackeren, kama alo,

  149. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 11:15 am

Re #144 obachan, typical yeah? Sound and fury signifying nothing.

  150. jonj November 16, 2012 11:15 am

And whos to know what other studs Mack couldve recruited in those 2 years! All in all we can say whatever we want now becuz chows at the helm now and hes running us to ground! and if you cant see that just look at the stats! we average 12pts a game (take away defensive and special teams TDs) against FBS teams. If we take away our garbage time touchdowns its 9pts a game. our defense averages 48pts a game. N dont ever try to tell me Mack left us with THE WORST fbs team!

On a positive not I am excited to watch higgins in action! Hopefully he can shine some light on this team now and for the future (hopefully boost the recruiting)!

Re conditioning. Nobody has really addressed hawkpeter’s point from a couple of days back. Not sure who is monitoring fatigue and overconditioning, but some of the guys do seem less explosive than I expected. Maybe it’s just the long season + too much travel on short prep weeks + disappointing results. Dunno.

  157. Annoddah Dave November 16, 2012 11:28 am

@#144 obachan: Did you understand the KMH report? RS went beyond his job description and it showed. JD delegated authority to someone he shouldn’t have. CC did not check and double check. The only person not mentioned is RS’ direct supervisor, TC. Why was she out of the loop? This one is a classic case for MBA study…everyone disregarded the chain of command?

  158. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 11:28 am

  159. gobows November 16, 2012 11:32 am

#134 the # of starts for a teams returning players, especially on the o line, is a good indication on how well they will do. that’s 1 of the keys that phil steele uses when he makes his preseason predictions. so next year the team should have over 50 game starts on the o line, and more than likely show a huge improvement over this year. with that we should also see improved play from the qb, rb’s, te’s, and wrs.

The BOR and MRC articles in the paper is interesting from the point of view that any “dissenting” opinion by individul BOR member(s) in totally missing – is the article saying that it was 100% support for MRC?

Of course, the “nicities” to work together to move UH forward sounds so “political” – which in my opinion is horse sh*t.

Then the wonda blanda articles cites UHAD has the authorization to issue a “wire transfer”? Is this true? How many other department heads have the same authorization? How is this controlled by the “financial” guru at upper campus? Yet, nothing is said in either article about the role/responsibilities of certain upper campus individuals (guess they are the untouchables).

Orgainzational, I find it difficult to grasp the idea that MRC and not the Chancellor has the responsiblity for UH-Manoa campus. In my mind, I see each Chancellor as the head with MRC as the “chairperson” of the board who coordinates with each Chancellor to get things done; not by-pass the Chain of command” which by the way was not addressed in either article ( ie, MRC instructions to RF to handle the MWC deal which by-passed the Chancellor and UHAD).

BOR says that MRC sould be given credit for several important items including getting millions of dollars in research grants and opening of West Oahu Campus – now, did she really trample over all the individual professors who were awarded the grants? What was her role is securing each grant? Did she personally solicite the funds? West Oahu campus has been on the books for years and years and I do not recall how MRC was instrumental in the completion of the campus – yes, she is the President when it opened – this means she get all the credit?

Sounds like Fraiser who took credit for the wahine VB program being so successful.

    Auwe, auwe, auwe!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of Nam where there were Generals in choppers over a battle area relieving platoon leaders fighting the ground battle – until the Generals learned that the Chinese gave ground to air shoulder held missiles to the Viet Cong.

  163. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 11:56 am

I know that Trevor Davis is here.

Against Fresno, he said somebody landed on his head. A few plays later, he got whacked on the head again. So they took him to the hospital. They said he had something resembling whiplash. He didn’t practice much, but he’ll play.

  164. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 11:58 am

I’ve been told that Stutzmann won’t start.

    It’s not a performance thing.

I think it’s because there’s a possibility he might sub for Gant, who’s starting. They don’t want to have to switch Stutzmann in the middle of the game. So Harding is expected to start on the strong side. Everyone is going to play. Sterling Jackson will play a lot. Art Laurel will play middle linebacker in place of Daley.

  165. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 12:00 pm

jonj, 80+% of this roster are Mack’s players. Rebuilding a college roster takes 3-4 years. In year two, good coaches will show progress on the field, but the record may not show it. Very few new coaches have success at mid-major programs in the first season because of the amount of change that takes place.

Need proof?: Gary Anderson at Utah St… It took him 3 years to record a winning record and now in his 4th year (2012), Utah St is (8-2) and a chance to win the WAC and is arguably the best team in Utah this year.

More Proof?: Sunny Dykes at La Tech… Took him 2 years to turn the program (had better talent than Anderson’s 1st year @ Utah St). In 2012, La Tech is (9-1) and a chance to win the WAC and has one of the best offenses in the nation (statistically).

Even More?: Todd Barry @ La Monroe… Took over a middling program in 2010 and in his 3rd year, records a win over a SEC team and should have beaten another and contending for Sun Belt title.

Shall I keep going?: Darrell Hazell @ Kent St… Took over a middling program in 2011 and after a losing 2011, is now (9-1) and in 1st place in the MAC.

One more for the road: June Jones @ SMU… went (1-11) his 1st year, but in year 2 took SMU to its first bowl game since the 1987 & 1988 “death penalty.” Also, in spite of not having a consistent QB, he’s on track to go to 4th straight bowl game (SMU is favored over Rice this week to become bowl eligible).

Here’s some more fuel to the fire you’re stewing over:

Here are Mack’s performance in 3rd Quarters (after coaches make their adjustments) vs FBS opponents:

    UH — Opponents

    2008: 72 – 128 (-56 pts)

    2009: 16 – 93 (-77 pts) **UH didn’t have 3Q TD vs FBS team until the 9th game

    2010: 128 – 126 (+2 pts) **Co-WAC Champs, but got embarrassed in Hawaii Bowl

    2011: 95 – 105 (-10 pts)

Overall (-141 pts) lost to opponents after halftime… that’s pretty terrible.

  166. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 12:02 pm

I’d like to see what transpires in the offseason.

There are a lot of unreported injuries that have factored in inconsistent play.

  167. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 12:10 pm

jonj… here’s McMackin doozie for ya:

McMackin suffered two embarrassing blown out losses in the two bowl games he coached in (21-49 vs Notre Dame & 35-62 vs Tulsa) and following both games there were multiple reports that practices were lax and the team was unprepared to play.

  168. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 12:17 pm

    Hi Stephen,

This year’s offseason will be critical to Chow’s future beyond 4 years. I don’t know if the win-loss record will be great next year, but based off what I see and hear, we should see progress next year.

The biggest room for improvement is already in house…

    1. UH will start 2013 healthy

    2. The 2012 freshmen will go through their 1st strength & conditioning program.

    3. The 2012 freshmen will be sophmores in 2013 (EXPERIENCE!!!)

    4. QB Taylor Graham

  170. gobows November 16, 2012 12:21 pm

#166 i liked mack, he’s a great dc. but i agree, he wasn’t good as a head coach.

what’s your view on the job bob davie is doing at nm? will he be around long enough to see winning seasons?

  171. jeezy33 November 16, 2012 12:30 pm

    Former Athlete,

You saw improvements to Utah St very early on. It’s not all about the wins and losses. About competing.

Utah St was playing competitive ball games with BYU as soon as he took over.

I agree Mack recruited terribly. But the fact Chow hasn’t done much yet at all doesn’t give me any reason to be optimistic about him either. I think Chow can recruit a lot better. But I am not sure of his ability to lead as a HC.

  172. jonj November 16, 2012 12:37 pm

    Really thats your proof??

2012 295.2yds per game 123 nation?!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!? starters pulled out 2nd half!!!!!!

2011 404.2yds per game 42nd nation (injury season)

    2010 500.6yrds per game 2nd nation

2009 437.5yrds per game 15 nation (injury season)

2008 345.8yrds per game 45 nation (who was the Qb JJ left us with his great recruiting)

I get we shouldnt of had a winning record this year! i dont mind that but were playing high school level football. no competition total blowouts! teams pulling their starters 2nd half!!! how much more do i have to go!!

  173. wlsc November 16, 2012 12:40 pm

so, what is your answer re saint louis quarterbacks?

  174. jonj November 16, 2012 12:42 pm

you could have made the same arguement with Mack!

2011 freshmen sophs experience/strength condition program

    2011 graves (experience)

    2012 team healthy!!!

Your arguement is weak! bring some real statistics to the table and evidence!

I didnt think Mack was the greatest Head coach. but he did surround himself with the right people and we did have winning ranked seasons under him. I also saw a team fight till the end for the first time with USC and teams that gave hell to BCS competition!

  175. ALLAN November 16, 2012 12:46 pm

MRC HAS BOR BY THE cashEWS…GET IT? BUCKS & NUTS.

  176. jonj November 16, 2012 12:54 pm

opponents 250 pts 31.25pts per game first half points

UH 58pts 7.25pts per game first half (thats offensive production)

  177. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 12:55 pm

jonj… you do realize that UH changed offenses, lost a 3 yr starter at QB, lost 4 starting Olinemen, 3 starting Dlinemen, and 2 LB after 2011 and that’s before the injuries in 2012???

UH had all those gaudy #’s and only had 1 winning season.

If UH administration and Jim Donovan thought the program was fine, they would have extended Mack’s contract after 2010. By not offering an extension after a co-WAC championship season was a huge red flag regarding the state (or confidence) of the program. Considering UH failed to complete an extension with Jones, and losing him, following a great 2006 and (12-1) 2007, you would think UH would rush to an extension with Mack if they viewed him as the long term answer. In hindsight, the 2010 season probably saved Mack’s job… If Mack was .500 in 2010, he may have been fired if UH could gather the money.

BTW, there’s only 120 teams is FBS.

  178. jonj November 16, 2012 1:02 pm

i wish i could see a real 2nd half adjustment againsst the first teams!! damn what dont u get about this situation???

  179. Hawkpeter November 16, 2012 1:03 pm

This argument will not go away. Who is more responsible for poor results? The current HC or the previous?

There seems to be some idea that a guilty charge against one axiomatically exculpates the other. This is a fallacy. Each is responsible for their own record, the severity of the charge is dependent against the unique circumstances of each season. It’s possible that each are equally guilty and responsible for their own results; each guilty as charged.

One question for the apologists of the current HC; what WOULD a bad 1st season look like under Coach Chow that you would be assign him a strict measure of accountability for?

This is request for a falsifiability of your own argument. A lack of falsifiability is not not a strength of an argument, it is a weakness.

  180. jonj November 16, 2012 1:04 pm

and you do realize that in 2011 we lost 4 guys to the NFL (3wideouts n 1RB) had a QB that was good (but got injured) as well as how many recievers and lineman??? and still was 9pts away from a 9-4 season?? what dont u get??

  181. jonj November 16, 2012 1:05 pm

our speacial teams alone gave our season away last season!

  182. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 1:10 pm

From now on, why don’t we just compare Norm Chow to Chip Kelly, or Nick Saban, or even Paul Johnson? After all, we want a successful program, right? One that rivals the likes of Oregon, Alabama, and such?

  183. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 1:11 pm

#172, Utah St had a slightly better roster to work with in Anderson’s 1st year vs this year’s UH roster. Plus the Utah schools can pull in the post-mission LDS players, which are more physically & mentally mature. So that helps also.

I see Chow has been heavily recruiting Utah, which was his old Utah & BYU recruiting territory. If nothing else, it opens another populated region to recruit. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chow pulls in a few late recruits who can’t qualify for USC (Lane Kiffin connection). What’s interesting is that Chow has recruiting ties to Florida (Tony Grimes, Marrell Jackson, Ryan Hall, Ne’Quan Phillips all originally from Florida). Even if UH only gets 2nd/3rd tier recruits from Florida, that’s still quality players.

  184. haka November 16, 2012 1:13 pm

    Ah, statistics…ok then,

1.Subtract your mean score from every games actual (observed) score

2.Square those difference scores for each game

3.Add those values together for the whole sample

4.Divide that sum by the number of cases in your data

5.Finally, calculate the square root of the number calculate in step #4

Voila, you now have the standard deviation for the data!

  185. kifi November 16, 2012 1:15 pm

I don’t know too much about the X’s and the O’s about football. All I know is that when we had good seasons, Ben Yee was on the sideline. And this year Ben Yee is not on the sideline. I think the key is Ben Yee. Ben Yee has to get back on the sideline.

  186. markazulu November 16, 2012 1:21 pm

I honestly loved things that Norm Chow has done except for the whole taking names off the jersey. I think we would be more succesful if we kept Aranda and Rolo i dont know i was really high on those 2 guys and rich miano.

  187. haka November 16, 2012 1:23 pm

    ok…

bad first half + good second half = good adjustments = bad coach

good first half + bad second half = good game plan = bad coach

bad first half + bad second half = bad coach

good first half + good second half = good coach = more pay

ben yee on sideline = good season

but factor in inheritence factor + injury factor = muddle huddle

    got it!

    just do it!

    just win baby!

  188. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 1:23 pm

  189. jeezy33 November 16, 2012 1:24 pm

If the excuse of putting in a new offense is going to take 3-4 years before Chow brings in HIS guys, why was he hired in the first place? You don’t bring in a guy knowing you are gonna have to hit rock bottom before we see any kinds of improvement.

  190. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 1:26 pm

    185 Haka: dat too.

eh, 3-prong, catch any fish lately?

  193. d1shima November 16, 2012 1:27 pm

…the team did pretty good when Gaylord was in charge of the kicking tee, too!

  194. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 1:27 pm

#183, now that you mention Saban…. In his 1st year at Alabama (2007), Saban went (6-6) in the regular season with 18 returning starters, finished 5th in the SEC west, and lost to Auburn and were cheating (later proved that there were improper benefits to several players). Saban was nearly run out of town by impatient boosters and fans.

I guess cooler heads prevailed there.

  195. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 1:29 pm

and Saban lost to La-Monroe in 2007!!!

  196. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 1:33 pm

Whoa 6-6.. DAS what I wanted to see this season! Not going to happen, ever! Cause the window of opportunity is gone.

See? You missed the point.. At this point of the season, why bother comparing coaches, it really achieves nothing at this juncture. What’s more important are the incremental developments positive or negative that affect the program here and now. Not what was and will never be back.

In the last Na Koa lunch, Lelie talked about how the receivers were messing up on their routes. If it were only one or two receivers, I might blame the receivers. BUT all? After all these weeks of practice and this many games, it doesn’t make sense to put the onus on the receivers. Doesn’t that suggest problems in the method of instruction?

  197. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 1:36 pm

FUHA, why oh why won’t you answer the question about who Mack had left in the cupboard for QB, WR, and SB when he took over? If you can’t either refute that point or acknowledge it as a flaw in your argument then you have ZERO credibility.

  198. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 1:37 pm

193 Haka: been put of commission for a few months. What about you? What kind of fishing you do? Partner was out Waianae last weekend and picked up some shibis. Tako should be coming in too.

    Go Warriors!

  203. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 1:55 pm

#200, considering Marrell Jackson and Ne’Quan Phillips are true freshmen from Florida, I would think it’s fair to say Chow gets some credit for recruiting Florida. I wouldn’t think Florida kids just call out of the blue and say they want to play for UH (Google Earth says about 4,800mi from UH to Miami).

JJ occasionally had prep recruits from Florida, Mack only 2 via JC transfer. Chow got 4 (2 were transfers) in his 1st class. We’ll see how they pan out but I see it as a good thing that UH now has access to Florida and Utah.

  204. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 1:58 pm

Go Rainbow Warriors and Wahine too!

ST: At least we not talking politics!

  206. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 2:18 pm

    Latest Spread Updates:

    UH (+22), Total = 60pts —- Opened at (+23.5), Total = 63

What’s interesting is that after Higgins was announced the starter, the line moved down 1 point but vegasinsider betting trend shows more tickets placed in favor of Air Force. The last update shows 90% of tickets getting bet on Air Force to cover. That means some large bets came in on UH shortly after the announcement (the line moved at 12pm Pacific time, about 4 hours the announcement was made on Warrior Beat).

    WOW…

UH is (+8 or +8.5) vs Illinois tonight. I think UH covers easy. The odds makers have no idea what Gib Arnold has going on at UH this year. Illinois is in a transition year with a new coach and they don’t have much size or depth at the bigs. If UH takes care of the ball, I think they got a very good shot to win outright. Sounds like the odds makers only read the Athlon sports Big West preview to get an assessment of UH. They probably discounted the Rainbow Classic wins because the opponents were weak, and probably didn’t watch the games before setting the lines.

I heard this week chow gave 10 scholarship players their walking papers and told them they can leave now or wait untill the seasons over. and i heard that from one of the players that is hitting the road. i know the players that got their walking papers but i ain’t gonna mention any of them.

  215. Old School Dave November 16, 2012 2:30 pm

Read somewhere that USU’s Gary Anderson is being mentioned as a candidate for the Kentucky job, along with former Tennessee HC Phil Fulmer.

  216. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:31 pm

    Manoa:

That would be an inaccurate statement.

  217. Kevin November 16, 2012 2:31 pm

Michael Harper. Gib gets credit for Australia. But then so could Coolen going back to the early 90s to present day, but then Matt McBriar is in the NFL so maybe JJ…

    Maybe its pointless to wonder?

    Maybe?

  218. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:33 pm

Ah, I believe Ben Yee’s situation is best addressed by people who are on Na Koa’s board.

  219. Kevin November 16, 2012 2:35 pm

I don’t care what anybody says. If people were to meet face to face and throw blows fas’ kine it would settle things once and for all.

Argue about sports long enough and it becomes one ***k -measuring contest. 😆

If Jim Donovan leaves, where do I sign up to interview for his current $200,000+ job?

  222. jimmy the lock November 16, 2012 2:37 pm

What the receivers didn’t know their routes? Oh my! That means they aren’t ready, they shouldn’t be playing.

ok den, GO UH STUDENT ATHLETES!

  223. Old School Dave November 16, 2012 2:38 pm

Scholarships are a one-year deal. June Jones did the same in his first 2 seasons at UH. Bo Espinoza – Montana State, Chris Smith – SE Missouri, Aaron Lavarenz – New Mexico/Azusa Pacific, Charles Tharp – Western Illinois, the list goes on. Stuff like this happens with a new coach. Just stating the facts.

  224. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:41 pm

A committee has to review each pulled scholarship.

Now a player can be cut, but remain on scholarship.

Also, if a player has graduated in, say, 3.5 years, there’s no obligation to extend the scholarship for a fifth season.

  225. manoa#1 November 16, 2012 2:42 pm

    st,

ok then that player is just making it up..

  226. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:42 pm

    Kevin:

    That’s because this isn’t a football matter, it’s a Na Koa matter.

    Something happened there.

We do have people with Na Koa ties on the blog. I’m sure they could explain.

  227. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2012 2:44 pm

#222, you should be able to go onto workatuh.hawaii.edu and find the opening and apply once its available.

  228. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:44 pm

    manoa:

Now I’ve heard there are some players who probably are encouraged to go elsewhere, and there was a challenge after last week’s game, but, no, a scholarship cannot just be pulled for someone who hasn’t graduated without cause and the approval of a committee.

  229. manoa#1 November 16, 2012 2:45 pm

ok maybe cut from the team but will remain on scholarship.

  230. manoa#1 November 16, 2012 2:46 pm

    shoots thanks .

  231. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:47 pm

A player also has the right to appeal.

But again, there is due diligence.

And, again, a player might be deactivated from the team, but without the proper channels, he cannot be stripped of his scholarship.

By the way, McMackin had several of those incidents, where he had to eat a lot of scholarships.

At one point, McMackin had five players who had “retired.” Say a scholarship is valued at $20,000, that’s $100,000 in dead money.

  232. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2012 2:49 pm

The other thing is that any player with a problem needs to go straight to Chow.

Don’t go through assistants or staffers. Go right to him. He actually is a very reasonable person.

  233. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 2:52 pm

i thought jeff portnoy was a legal advisor to UH. where was he on the wonder blunder and the jd suspension?

    UH athlete

Atleast Saban showed what his team could do in year one and same for the rest of those coaches! they put a product on the field that competed. how does that go over your head?? its not about the wins or losses. to be honest i thought this season was a 3-9 season from get go. But the fact that Chow is breaking all the records (not in favor for us) is a disgrace! teams are laughing at us and saying hey well my 2nd n 3rd teamers will get a chance to gain experience this game. When i look in the paper and tsai writes that Air Force has the advantage in every aspect of the game. Well my friend something is wrong!

AMEN lets pack the house tonight! And Good luck to UH football

  241. jonj November 16, 2012 3:28 pm

also its been clearly stated that Greenwood and the other idiots over threw JD to get Mack fired and to hire Chow. JD didnt want either of those 2 to happen. Greenwood who has never watched our brand of football and hired Chow based on resume and maybe “political pressure” lol pls man! dont bring those fools up again

  298. gobows November 16, 2012 4:59 pm

special teams decisions on punting is not good.

  299. Matt November 16, 2012 5:03 pm

    Big stop Defense!!!

  300. gobows November 16, 2012 5:03 pm

    4th down stop at midfield

  301. WarriorNY November 16, 2012 5:04 pm

    Great job again D!!!

  302. Manoa November 16, 2012 5:04 pm

We took the options away from the option offense.

  303. WarriorMojo November 16, 2012 5:04 pm

Is is gonna be a dive on 1st and 10?

  304. Matt November 16, 2012 5:06 pm

Come on Offense. We need another score.

  305. Matt November 16, 2012 5:08 pm

Come on O-line. You outweigh these guys by 30-40 pounds.

  306. NYUHTX November 16, 2012 5:09 pm

Higgins running stats not so good.

  307. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 5:09 pm

Higgins making some great fakes on play action but you still gotta block.

  308. Manoa November 16, 2012 5:13 pm

Need to look at our running plays and change them up a little– change the double teams, delay to throw rythm off, or cut back not all downhill all the time.

  309. PurpleMaple November 16, 2012 5:14 pm

Hawaii has only one running back. And he missed a block which allowed Higgins to be sacked. Really miss Will Gregory. And I haven’t seen John Lister play yet.

  310. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:17 pm

change QBs and we’re in a competitive game, go figure.

  311. gobows November 16, 2012 5:19 pm

    #309 lister had a carry 3 or 4 yds

  312. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:19 pm

figures, chow running out the clock. we 1-8, try and score. jezzus.

  313. NYUHTX November 16, 2012 5:20 pm

Liking this game. Iosefa’s fumble was tough but he has had some nice runs too.

  314. Matt November 16, 2012 5:25 pm

Wahine VB loses game 2 27-25.

  315. NYUHTX November 16, 2012 5:26 pm

Nice to see them having some fun, even if it was a bit short.

  316. PurpleMaple November 16, 2012 5:26 pm

Gobows, Thanks, I must have missed it. Also listening to Wahine volleyball on radio. Coach Chow was actually smiling.

  317. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:26 pm

at least we’re competitive, and we see the results of a change in QBs, its all some of us asked for.

  318. wth November 16, 2012 5:26 pm

agree with PurpleMaple. Joey missed the block that got Higgins sacked. Joey playing ok, but his ball handling is scareing me a bit. Look forward to the 2nd half. Havent felt that way all year!

  319. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:28 pm

yeah, it was nice to see chow smile at Higgins. first time i ever seen chow smile on the sidelines. the cameras caught chow smiling twice.

  320. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 5:34 pm

I guess ESPN came prepared. They talking about everything but this game. Anticipated a blow out?

  321. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 5:35 pm

Not only at halftime but during the game itself. Can we blame them?

  322. SteveM November 16, 2012 5:35 pm

Wow– it’s halftime and the other team doesn’t have 35 points yet….

    woo hoo!

  323. lava November 16, 2012 5:37 pm

I hope we don’t see SS in the 2nd half.

  324. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 5:43 pm

Stanford beat Baylor in WBB in the Wahine Rainbow Classic to end the winning streak.

Punahou leads Mililani 21-13 starting the 2nd half.

  325. Matt November 16, 2012 5:46 pm

Nice return Harding. They are really avoiding Edwards.

  326. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:46 pm

    322. stevem…. lmao

  327. wth November 16, 2012 5:46 pm

Be nice to see any action from Graves. Play hard Warriors!

  328. cocobean November 16, 2012 5:46 pm

    Still get chance.

Have a feeling Chow will go to more screens or even a shovel. AF doing a good job of attacking on running plays. Don’t really care when we show one RB then moving the F back inside. Almost a tip off that we’ll be running to that side. Hope Chow has some passes off of the move.

  329. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 5:49 pm

Higgins a red shirt freshman? Said at least twice by commentators.

  330. Matt November 16, 2012 5:49 pm

Come on defense. Let’s get a turnover.

  331. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:50 pm

i love the academy players, all heart.

  332. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:50 pm

    man, that edwards has speed!

  333. gobows November 16, 2012 5:52 pm

air force offense is hitting UH hard

  334. Matt November 16, 2012 5:54 pm

TD AFA. JHT has to wrap up.

  335. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:54 pm

that was a gift TD. gotta wrap him up dude.

  336. gobows November 16, 2012 5:55 pm

huge hit at 5, no wrap, walk in for td. lack of technique is not good.

  337. DoubleB November 16, 2012 5:55 pm

    Beaten by a 5’6″ rb … Ouch

  338. DoubleB November 16, 2012 5:56 pm

Need to score on this drive boys…

  339. Townie November 16, 2012 5:56 pm

Cripes….no wrap up and AF walks into the endzone. Come on, where’s the basics?

  340. gobows November 16, 2012 5:57 pm

UH keeps getting good field position on the kick offs

  341. PurpleMaple November 16, 2012 5:58 pm

Cody Getz is 5-7, 175 and Warriiors could not tackle him. Hit twice, he still managed to get into the end zone. What’s with dat?? And WVB also losing set 3 17-22.

  342. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 5:58 pm

    162 pounds.

  343. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 5:58 pm

did i just see SS in the game?!

  344. Matt November 16, 2012 6:00 pm

Throw on 1st down once in awhile coach.

  345. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 6:01 pm

    my eyes going bad, nvm.

  346. gobows November 16, 2012 6:02 pm

    3 and out… again

  347. Matt November 16, 2012 6:02 pm

    Woo hoo turnover.

  348. gobows November 16, 2012 6:03 pm

    air force muffs, UH recovers

  349. Warrior fan November 16, 2012 6:03 pm

Big turnover! Lets go Offense!! Need to pass on 1st down

  350. A-joe November 16, 2012 6:03 pm

    Here we goooo…

  351. Matt November 16, 2012 6:04 pm

Wahine VB down 2 sets to 1 after losing game 3 22-25.

  352. gobows November 16, 2012 6:05 pm

iosefa gets the 1st down and fumbles

  353. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 6:05 pm

    iosefa, 2nd fumble.

  354. wth November 16, 2012 6:05 pm

JOEY!!! DANG IT, NOT AGAIN!!! Careless with the ball. High and tight, close to the body!

  355. Warrior fan November 16, 2012 6:05 pm

Oh no… Iosefa needs to get benched.. 2nd fumble on the night SMH

  356. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:05 pm

    Cement hands,,,,

  357. A-joe November 16, 2012 6:05 pm

    Shucks!

  358. Matt November 16, 2012 6:06 pm

Like a kick to the stomach.

  359. PurpleMaple November 16, 2012 6:07 pm

Talk about taking the air out of your sails. 2nd fumble. He needs to protect the ball better.

  360. gobows November 16, 2012 6:07 pm

why is air force able to move the defense 5 yds back off the line?

  361. obachan November 16, 2012 6:07 pm

Iosefa’s 2nd fumble – he carries the ball like it just came out of the hot imu.

  362. Townie November 16, 2012 6:08 pm

Chow needs to work on his composure. I’m sure his raw emotions on his sleeve has a negative effect on the guys.

  363. PurpleMaple November 16, 2012 6:09 pm

Yeah defense. Art Laurel making lots of plays.

  364. Townie November 16, 2012 6:11 pm

Why, why, why, does our defensive coach think that glancing blows are a good way to bring down a ball carrier?

  365. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:12 pm

    Second fumble today by Iosefa.

  366. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:13 pm

364 what makes you think a coach would teach that technique?

  367. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 16, 2012 6:13 pm

Pssssssssst Norm…I don’t think running it up the middle on every 1st and 2nd works.

    Do something else!!!!

  368. gobows November 16, 2012 6:16 pm

    3 and out, again

  369. Townie November 16, 2012 6:16 pm

    @366 cuz that’s what I’m SEEING!!!

  370. Townie November 16, 2012 6:17 pm

    Over and over.

  371. PurpleMaple November 16, 2012 6:18 pm

Well, it was a good half a game. Signing off.

  372. LizKauai (iPad) November 16, 2012 6:19 pm

Summa you guys talk like we have a bench.

Just support the struggling kids and think good thoughts that they can stay healthy enough to keep playing. Especially Joey.

    Go Warriors!

  373. warriorFan November 16, 2012 6:20 pm

here we go again..SMH..lets try again next week boyz..

  374. Buffoman November 16, 2012 6:20 pm

    364. I have been wondering that since JJ’s time. We think bumping people will make them fall. JHT is one of those. H just does not wrap up.

  375. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 6:21 pm

lets go warriors, still get chance.

  376. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:21 pm

370 yep no getting around it this is a sad team toP to bottom… Hope we can get some good recruits and build on what little we have.

  377. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 6:24 pm

    TOUCHDOWN HAWAII!!!!!

  378. Buffoman November 16, 2012 6:26 pm

One thing for sure, we need an o line coach like Cav. Have not seen good o line work since he left.

  379. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 6:27 pm

Higgins passes are floating again. Maybe he is winded with the altitude.

  380. LizKauai (iPad) November 16, 2012 6:29 pm

28 degrees could also have somethingmto do with it…

  381. SAWARRIOR November 16, 2012 6:29 pm

we need a turnover, special team score and offense to score.

  382. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:29 pm

379 our O line coach never coached O line before… Doesn’t look like a wise choice in retrospect.

  383. Kekoa November 16, 2012 6:29 pm

Hmmm…Only Joey left to carry the ball I guess. It’s Joey left, right, center and stop.

Meanwhile the defense gets to work extra as AF spreads the ball around to a dozen guys.

Lord help me be more tolerant.

  384. LizKauai (iPad) November 16, 2012 6:30 pm

    Haha. SAWARRIOR….

  385. MattyBoy November 16, 2012 6:30 pm

Anybody can call plays like Chow..he’s so damn predictable..with crappy play calling

  386. Inyoface November 16, 2012 6:31 pm

Yeah Chow shouldn’t get in the qb’s face. His previous years he was up in the booth and not getting in their face if they messed up. might be better he let the qb think about it on his own and just let the qb talk to the oc.

  387. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 6:31 pm

Watch the d-line. They cannot fend off the blockers.

  388. LizKauai (iPad) November 16, 2012 6:31 pm

    Go, Joey!

    Yea! Fumble recovery!

  389. Matt November 16, 2012 6:31 pm

    Fumble!!!

  390. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:32 pm

  409. Matt November 16, 2012 6:36 pm

  411. DoubleB November 16, 2012 6:36 pm

  414. Wassup November 16, 2012 6:38 pm

  424. Cheyah! November 16, 2012 6:47 pm

    Shutter and Lister please?

  425. gobows November 16, 2012 6:47 pm

anyone know who is doing the men’s basketball on radio?

  426. Buffoman November 16, 2012 6:47 pm

Put in Cayman. Can’t be worse than what we’ve seen in the second half.

  427. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 6:48 pm

Where is Shutter. SS didn’t complete a pass. Maybe the receivers running the wrong routes again. Or put Graves in for the heck of it.

  428. RedZone November 16, 2012 6:48 pm

    Way to go vb wahine.

  429. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 6:50 pm

  431. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 6:51 pm

    Nice return Harding!

  432. gobows November 16, 2012 6:55 pm

no 1st downs in the 2nd half.

  433. Townie November 16, 2012 6:57 pm

Ooooooooof!!! SS the punching bag just took a BLOW.

  434. gobows November 16, 2012 6:58 pm

air force is laying the smack down on hawaii. like varsity against jv.

  435. Townie November 16, 2012 6:59 pm

    Cue the fat lady.

  436. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 7:00 pm

No passes in the game. Hawaii not using their timeouts. He give up, but not me. Will watch again next week. I wonder who will be the qb?

  437. gobows November 16, 2012 7:00 pm

air force line is way smaller and way tougher than then the bigger hawaii guys. how is that happening…

  438. cocobean November 16, 2012 7:00 pm

Still got time. Off to the Stanley.

    Let the bashing begin..er continue.

  439. obachan November 16, 2012 7:02 pm

I give AF credit for being undersized high achievers but to lose to a team who didn’t attempt a single pass is hard to fathom. I also give credit to anyone who still has the stomach to watch Kekaula’s Inside The Abyss.

  440. Townie November 16, 2012 7:02 pm

I wonder what JJ is doing? I heard SMU has a new AD…

  441. LizKauai (iPad) November 16, 2012 7:02 pm

Sorry to see Sean put in… Only because I think he got really hurt this time. A for effort trying to get a first down.

    Howzit, Gang.

Just got home not too long ago, with the score at 14-7, AFA. Missed most of the exciting stuff, seems like. All I hear on the radio is us fumbling away opportunities. Just one heck of a tough season. Always looking forward to the next game, to see some progress, and possibly a win.

With a weird, kinda sick feeling in the stomach from what I heard of the second half, I guess I’ll go sleep now. Gotta get up in about 6 hours…

    Take care!

    Heal up, Warriors! Keep fighting!

Waiting to hear the many experts’ take on tonight’s game…

    Laterz!

  444. NYUHTX November 16, 2012 7:06 pm

Well, it looks like we have two backup QBs for next year.

  445. 808Bowler November 16, 2012 7:10 pm

That was a pathetic show of offense. In fact I’m offended by that offense.

    Sheesh…….the o line is bad……yuck

  446. manoa November 16, 2012 7:14 pm

Incredible– how can anyone defend what was done?

Made no first downs, because they ran for almost no yards every first down. What happened to mixing the pass and the run? No wonder Higgins struggled second half– because the bad play calling put Higgins in the hole with third and long. It is almost like someone tried to sabotage Higgins by calling bad plays.

All the local media– Curran, Veneri, Chris Hart, and Gary what’s his name– all talked about what a difference Higgins made.

  447. gobows November 16, 2012 7:16 pm

    uh turnover per minute

  448. Inyoface November 16, 2012 7:20 pm

Damn that was a katoosh. Gotta stop the fumble boys, gotta stop the fumbles. Now I see that there is no excuse that the qb has no time, he has all the time in the world and still double pumps or doesn’t run in wide open pastures. The spirals should be a lot tighter too, hard enough that its a left spiral but when the nose is going all over the place, even harder to catch.

  449. gobows November 16, 2012 7:20 pm

i’d like to see rolo return as the oc with free reign to run whatever he wants. mack was stupid to restrict rolo’s play calling.

  450. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 7:23 pm

    Fro-tu!

  451. BKekoa ( 9th isle) November 16, 2012 7:23 pm

    SADD!!

  452. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 7:29 pm

I thought they worked on securing the ball?

  453. Inyoface November 16, 2012 7:29 pm

Next year these guys will be better and bigger, they’re definitely getting hardnose football experience.

  454. Slugger November 16, 2012 7:32 pm

    Tsigh….

Nice to see what Higgins could do. Keep the faith, Warriors.

K, guess I’ll go over to the MBB game. Work keeps getting in the way.

    Latahs…

Gangees, wanna feel better….MBB hawaii leading Illinois 21-7.

  456. gobows November 16, 2012 7:34 pm

#466 is there a cure for “chow syndrome”?

  457. Moocher November 16, 2012 7:35 pm

exactly what many been saying–changing the qb does nothing when the whole team is out of synch.

125 passing yds for higgins…really? not a knock on higgins, but why so low an output? receivers? line?

higgins completed only 60% of his passes–why?

higgins -26 yards rushing…why? not blaming higgins like how others would do shroeder, but i’m asking why? why was higgins -26 yards? sacks? line breakdowns?

could’ve sworn i seen chow talking to higgins and a receiver as if there were mix up in routes.

iosefa 2.5 yd. avg. why??? o-line again?

shroeder 0-5 in passing but not fast, he had the highest rushing avg at 4.3 and second most rushing yards…really? how can that be?

ok gangee, since we can’t complain about ss this week or blame him for a loss, let’s see who the fan scapegoat will be this week.

no win, means no improvement. i think i can rightfully say that because i know none of you will take an 0-12 season and be satisfied by saying “it’s ok we lost, we were better then last week”.

  458. gobows November 16, 2012 7:36 pm

    21-15

  459. cavewarrior November 16, 2012 7:38 pm

Offense productivity begins with OLine, run blocking and pass blocking. Both were ineffective, and not consistent tonight. Does not matter if QB is SS or JH.

The individual QB actions and decisions tonight was a toss up. SS may see the defensive scheme better, but takes too long with decisions as the play is run; and his arm strength is weak. JH needs more playing time to develop ‘feel’ for the game.

Hope JH gets another chance next week though.

Chow calls plays to manage the game clock. Defensive strength got weaker as the game progressed, so calling running plays, even if not effective, runs the clock. Totally different philosophy from JJ, where we had many, many 3 and outs in 16 seconds elapsed time, in 2000-2005.

    GO Warriors !!!

  460. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 7:39 pm

I will be surprised if more than 20K show up for the next game.

  461. Taz November 16, 2012 7:41 pm

#472, Yeah, $2,000,000, Rockne Freitas, Dave Shoji or if worse comes to worse, “The Braddas”!!!!

  462. 3-Prong November 16, 2012 7:41 pm

    2-Prong = 3-Prong enjoying refreshments

    Go Bows!

  463. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 7:41 pm

    Cavewarrior,

I think, our Oline outweighed AF’s Dline by an average of 50lbs. I’m not so sure that we can blame the talent, it may really be the training.

  464. cavewarrior November 16, 2012 7:42 pm

The players we have are trying — GREAT Effort!

But injuries, playing at 60% health, lack of depth, and inexperience shows.

  465. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 7:44 pm

At least both Wahine teams won… whoo hoo!

  466. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 7:55 pm

Men’s BB off to a good start!

  467. tom-warriornation November 16, 2012 7:56 pm

    Brain-dead offensive play calling

why do we call a running play up the middle over 50% of the time when we gain 1-2 yards each time? This is so predictable (and boring) and a dream gameplan for our opponent’s defensive coordinator. Why not do more screen passes or swing passes to the running back or anything NOT up the middle?

2nd half stat: 25 plays, 30 yards gained; 0 first downs?

  468. MattyBoy November 16, 2012 8:05 pm

Brain-dead offensive play calling is right! Fire Chow

  469. MattyBoy November 16, 2012 8:05 pm

He’s running Hawaiis football program to the ground

  470. RedZone November 16, 2012 8:10 pm

We got beat at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Coach can’t do much about that now. It is something that needs to be corrected during the off season.

  471. warriorfan November 16, 2012 8:11 pm

Very simple stuff, Coach Chow ego got in the way of a win. JH didn’t have chance. 26 plays up the middle with 1-2 yards gain. And to ensure we lose, he put Mr. Statue of Liberty in to cap of a lose Shame on you Coach

  472. MattyBoy November 16, 2012 8:12 pm

He’s not going to correct nothing. Nothing has been corrected this whole season. We’ve been not progressing but regressing this year..Chow is horrible. Chow Appen era begins. Or has begun for that matter

  473. warriorfan November 16, 2012 8:13 pm

Red Zone You must was watching a different game or you on some serious drugs

  474. gobows November 16, 2012 8:30 pm

wahine vb wins set 5 15-7. fb team should train with the wahine in the off season, so that they can win games in the 4th qtr.

  475. Piikoi Boi November 16, 2012 8:39 pm

Looks like Higgins arm not as strong as SS. I think runs are up the middle because not fast enough to get to the edge. Agree O-line needs to help QB and RB. Long year.

  476. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 16, 2012 8:42 pm

    tom-warrior nation,

beats the hell out of me why we think running the ball up the middle when AF is stacking the box with 7 guys is going to work after the 200000th consecutive failed attempt.

    meh, whatevers already.

  477. Slugger November 16, 2012 8:43 pm

    A-House,

Are you at da MBB game? I have something for you. It’s from LizKauai.

  478. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 8:51 pm

Men’s BB getting uncomfortably close, now… Go Bows!

  479. imuagrad November 16, 2012 8:52 pm

when will the Hawaii media speak up to the “old boy network” and say the hiring of Chow was a mistake?

  480. gobows November 16, 2012 8:52 pm

only 61% at the free throw line 13-21.

  481. gobows November 16, 2012 8:53 pm

#495 after the rail goes to UH

  482. Moocher November 16, 2012 8:55 pm

    mattyboy

why don’t you start a petition to fire chow if that’s what you see to be correct.

in fact why not ask ST if you can start a vote on his blog and see where most opinions lie if that’s how you or others with the same opinion of fire chow feel?

maybe you can visit chow and tell him what he needs to do?

  483. gobows November 16, 2012 8:55 pm

    uh has 15 turnovers.

  484. westwind November 16, 2012 8:55 pm

If David Graves could score 6 touchdowns with the scout team against the first team defense, maybe we would have better results using David Graves. Also, Air Force made adjustments during the halftime while UH did not. It appears our guys always get outcoached.

  485. gobows November 16, 2012 9:00 pm

#500 well, some coaches only want to win, coach chow is teaching life lessons. me, i’d rather have the team win, lots of time to learn life lessons after school.

  486. gobows November 16, 2012 9:02 pm

uh having trouble making layups, and now lost the lead.

  487. gobows November 16, 2012 9:13 pm

brereton (30%) and standhardinger (21%) combined for 17 pts.

  488. westwind November 16, 2012 9:17 pm

Coach Chow’s playcalling reflects his days with USC and BYU. And he’s trying to play this style with Hawaii and it’s not working. This is the reason he insist on sending Joey Iosefa into the middle of the defensive line. To no avail. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

  489. gobows November 16, 2012 9:31 pm

coach chow must think iosefa is lendale white.

  490. gobows November 16, 2012 9:34 pm

hawaii lost, more like gave it away. 17-31 at the free-throw line 54%, 16 turnovers. they should work on their free throw shooting more and trying to dunk less.

  491. Townie November 16, 2012 9:35 pm

    Men’s BBall…a loss, but I don’t feel embarassed!

  492. obachan November 16, 2012 9:37 pm

Ouch! Hawaii couldn’t guard the 3 point line – great effort though.

  493. gobows November 16, 2012 9:39 pm

one thing about shooting free throws, the shooter has no defenders in their face, open look at the rim. gib should have the team do gassers/suicides every day until they can shoot 70% at the line.

  494. Townie November 16, 2012 9:42 pm

Hey, regarding that WARNING: LACK OF OXYGEN sign. We need a WARNING: DRINK WATER…HIGH HUMIDITY ALERT sign. Then pass out hand fans to everyone to psych the visiting team.

  495. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 9:46 pm

No penalty call against Illi on that huge push off near the end hurt the Bows… too bad..

  496. MattyBoy November 16, 2012 9:47 pm

    Moocher

Start a petition on THIS blog?????? Uuuhh ok.

  497. gobows November 16, 2012 9:53 pm

lots of fro-tu’s in the stands

  498. Moocher November 16, 2012 9:58 pm

    yeah…

keep a cool head. it’s not easy no one likes losing. the way i look at it is when you build something you either need to tear down something that was existing, or dig a hole to lay a proper foundation.

like any construction site-aye, things are a mess, but it’ll take shape. there’s not an architect in the world who rants and raves about there being a hole in the ground when he visioned a 50 story shiny building in 3 years time. it’s a process. we’ll get that nice shiny building, but for now, we are in the hole and going to build the foundation.

this is how i try to look at it to keep things in perspectice.

  499. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 10:02 pm

Replay at 11 pm on ESPNU. Uh vs Air Force. Maybe we might win da second time.

  500. RedZone November 16, 2012 10:03 pm

  501. kapakahi November 16, 2012 10:06 pm

    #384,

Was never a good choice…..from the get-go! Should’ve kept Gordy!

  502. Moocher November 16, 2012 10:14 pm

gotta agree with imuagrad on a point…

chows hiring did seem manipulated and orchestrated by a few. not saying chow had anything to do with it-but i think its common knowledge gangreen along with the podagee strongarm did want chow when the AD did not.

    correct me if i’m wrong.

but if true…this is really another extension of the wonder blunder and jd’s fiasco by a small few who are trying to dictate manoa. and i would have to agree that in looking purely at this season alone, i agree, there is no way mac would’ve done worse. we were going into the MWC and certain people wanted a new coach to take us into the MWC, one perhaps with MWC experience…that’s the impression i got. and hinshaw and jd wanted mac to remain, and that’s perhaps part of the reason why they had to be flushed out of their positions in order to keep continuity.

anyways, this is more suited for keoki kerr then moocher.

anyways, chow is here, and there’s gonna be a process to it all. it is what it is now.

  503. SteveM November 16, 2012 10:31 pm

papajoe2 — I watched the game with my brother-in-law from Seattle. He asked if this was a rerun– esp. when I told him to watch for the 2-yd dives on first down and that the QB in the 4th quarter was unlikely to complete a pass. I had to nod yes.

  504. kalani November 16, 2012 10:37 pm

Defense has played pretty well since Colorado St. game. On offense I think its Cayman time.

  505. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 10:46 pm

Our team played like a bunch of rookies being coached by a group of rookies…

“We went two quarters without HIM moving the ball at all so we made a change. Thought we could get something going.”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

  508. The Mill Yard November 16, 2012 10:55 pm

Dont understand how week after week, Coach Chow preaches that he doesnt want his starting quarterback to feel like they’re having to look over their shoulder and not believing in replacing his quarterback. Also, not believing in relieving his starter at the end of games cause he feels its more important to get game reps in to gain more experience.

So why are things different now that Higgins is the starter? Higgins wasn’t lighting up the scoreboard, but he wasn’t hurting his team either. And you can also say that some of the offenses inability to score wasn’t all his fault (protection, receivers not on the same page as qb, fumbles by RB). Sound familiar?

If you decide to make a change at QB, give him the same chance and leash you gave Schroeder. Why should it be so different? What message are you sending your team? How are they gonna trust you when you preach something and yet are not consistent with that message for all players and positions?

Yes, I’m not at practice and may not know the ins and outs of the whole situation. But this is what I see and don’t understand the thinking for Coach Chow’s handling of the QB situation. You may not have the QB needed, and this year may be a transition year till Graham or Zwahlen comes to compete for the job, but be consistent with your QB’s and treat them fairly. Schroeder hasn’t proven to deserve this big leash and from the looks on the sidelines, there doesn’t seem to be a togetherness on the offense (Schroeder not communicating with receivers or linemen; just getting yelled at by Chow and thens goes to sit down and be alone till the next series).

  509. madeinhawaii November 16, 2012 11:02 pm

I don’t even bother listening to the post game conference… too painful.

Win or lose, I used to look forward to the Na Koa lunch reports, not anymore…

Why? Because what I see on the field doesn’t look fixable. I’m not convinced that it’s a drop off in talent… but I do question the techniques and fundamentals being taught. Seems our players forgot how to block, catch, hold on to the ball and even tackle properly.

  510. cocobean November 16, 2012 11:05 pm

    I no kill fight yet.

The can of worms Chow was reluctant to open is now open. Who’s the starting QB against Vegas? Think KITV is running a poll – A. HIggins B. Schroeder C. Shutter. Vote by text or on their website. Write in votes for Graves will not be counted. Results will be annoumced on Friday night’s sports cast.

  511. papajoe2 November 16, 2012 11:21 pm

cocobean, Air Force is beatable, but not by us.

  512. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 16, 2012 11:21 pm

I think the starting QB should be Sammy Sam.

  513. kalani November 16, 2012 11:22 pm

Schroeder has a decent arm but no mobility…Higgins has mobility but a weak arm. Shutter has mobility and a strong arm…its time to pick C.

  514. manoa November 16, 2012 11:36 pm

Higgins is clearly better– if you trust what you see.

The oline is a problem, but it is not like you need to recruit all new players. They are good enough talent wise to block the plays and protect the QB.

Technique is horrible (get some binoculars and see– I can hardly stand it), discipline in technique is horrible, and their is hesitation and confusion in who to block and where to go, like when they are zone blocking== this is NOT talent, it is either failure to coach and teach, or failure to drill these in as habits better.

Coaches have not had the time to make the oline perfect, but they should have made them better by now. Example, Cavanaugh can get results in a few weeks. There is a real problem in coaching the oline judging by what I see.

  515. cocobean November 16, 2012 11:46 pm

I’m just as disappointed as everyone else. The thing I try to keep in mind is no matter how I or other fans feel, the players and coaches feel worse. Their own disappointment and frustration is a mentally grinding burden to carry. Just don’t want to add any more negativity to their load.

Now is the time the team needs encouragement not a kick in the teeth.

The worse thing that could happen is for the team to kill fight and give up.

To my way of thinking everyone has a right to express how they feel. Being critical of the way things have gone is perfectly all right. Criticizing coaches and tactics are acceptable. Singling out players or personal attacks or other posters is not.

For me, I no still kill fight. I tink Vegas is beatable. Just hope the team thinks so too.

  516. Rodney November 17, 2012 12:12 am

JH not answer.I can see why SS was starter.

I would start JH again because SS is hurting.

For the sake of SS health.JH needs to step into

his throws.good luck JH and team

  517. cocobean November 17, 2012 12:13 am

Watching the 2nd half replay. Sure looks like Kapua Sai knocked the ball loose from Joey on the screen play.

  518. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 17, 2012 12:31 am

Lets give Shutter a shot against UNLV. What do we stand to lose besides another game? If it doesn’t work out we can always put Duke’s gift back into the game.

    Give CS a chance.

  519. smh November 17, 2012 3:40 am

Looking for highlights of current players that were QB’s in high school, found this one of DB Bubba Poueu-Luna. Video is split by rushing then throwing. Not bad. Shows a lot of versatility with running the ball, speed and good vision. Heck its late in the season but maybe he can help run the ball some since throwing seems to be limited? Otherwise I’m going to say finish the season trying out Shutter or Higgins (he did better than SS, but to me, just didn’t exude that “IT” factor but gave good effort)
