I guess no extra game is a good thing.
Guess they felt they couldn’t ask the season ticket owners to pay a little extra… especially on a losing season with less than 25K in the house against Boise for possibly the last match up ever. Who’d come to the Temple game, besides season ticket holders?

CONSIDER THIS:
Coach Norm Chow is a Punahou grad, yet he has IMUA on the back of the Warrior jerseys. As I understand this is a Kamehameha thing. And so why does he do this? There are many of us who would rather have the player’s name or nothing at all. But then you supposedly have this, one of the many cultural changes that have been implemented.
But, my friend and I were thinking about this and came up with this: having IMUA on their jerseys/or not would make it more difficult to see who was suited/on the sidelines/playing. You see this makes for less questions by the fans and media people. Unless you look for David Graves number or George Daly-Lyles you would never know that they were not suited and on the sidelines. And of course then the questions would also arise with the mounting losses about why we aren’t using our experienced players: Juniors and Seniors.

What happened to Daly-Lyles?
why do we keep running the ball up the middle over 50% of the time; when we are down 20 pts or more? It sends a wrong message to all our faithful fans that we are running out the clock; or giving up. more importantly, it tells our players the same. we should at least try; run the 2 minute offense or anything; to score quickly–even if we fail; it is the effort that counts and will be appreciated by the team and fans; not conceding the game and raising the “white flag”.

Iwonder and alawai, you guys completely missed the point, which is: Chow didn’t know what happened yet he rushed to judgment. His mind was already made up.
I’m not focusing on what Gregory did or didn’t do. My point is Chow decided to suspend the kid before even knowing what happened. That might work for you, but not me. .
Maybe JD is glad ticket sales and generating more revenue for the Athletic Dept isn’t his responsibility, anymore. Those in charge will have to answer to this year’s bigger deficit.
Or will they cook the books with some creative accounting ala Frazier style?

It doesn’t matter what Dr. Chow knows or saw in the video. It is documented that Gregory threw a punch(es) and got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Even if it was retaliation(there is no provision for that in the rules) Gregory was the one that was ejected.
Recent NCAA incidents have made it very clear. Dr. Chow said it, “He will be dealt with.”
So one state entity (UH) needs to pay another state entity (Aloha Stadium) to play its games there. Nuff already!! Time to seriously think about an on-campus stadium. Something in the area of 35K – 45K like Rice-Eccles (Utah). Save some $$ by making it bleacher seating except between the 20 yd lines (oh, my aching okole….. but only for 3-4 hours). Gotta come from private sources and fundraising, though (Bank of Hawaii, Hawaiian Air, Sheraton, etc).
I thought UH doesn’t want to maintain a stadium.
Woulda been a perfect occasion to have a MUSIC CONCERT following the Temple game.

Some of you think Norm Chow is making crap up regarding Will Gregory. I mean really…?

The kid got flagged for throwing a punch, for whatever reason, retaliating or not, and the kid got caught, got ejected from the game.
One of the officials told Hawaii coaches that Gregory actually threw not one, but three punches.
Gregory was told to leave the field, the sideline, per NCAA rules.
Norm nor his staff actually saw it, TV cameras never saw it, or showed it, but UH game films, from one of their few angles, DID see it.
Guilty, so he’s out. For how long ? Nobody knows.
Seems many here think Norm is making this stuff up. Get a DAMN clue already.
P.S. – for the many of you who’ve on the anti Sean Schroeder “band wagon”, wow, y’all were “on it” from the get go. Good on ya mates…!!!!!

Good point. Fact is Chow didn’t rush to judgement in fact he looked at the video before making his decision to suspend Gregory.
chow and his staff should step down. i have’nt seen the stadium that Empty for a Warrior game for a long time. and to to top it off the boise st broncos was in town usually they pack the house Everytime they play here.
Very thankful that the Temple game will not happen. Close this ’12 season and move on to the next one. If after 8 games there aren’t obvious improvement, an additional week isn’t going to make a huge difference for next year unless we can get a waiver to play Graham.
With 400 walk-up ticket sales for a nationally ranked BSU team, it would have been disastrous from a financial standpoint for UH unless Temple/State/Donors were paying for the bill. Sub 15,000 at the turnstile wouldn’t be impossible.
That being said, mahalo to Rockne for at least trying to make something work out. It could have been.

Air Force is beatable.
Gregory let his team down by letting his emotions get the best of him so early in the game. He knows his role, he knows he’s the speed back to run draws/delays or plays to the edge. The O missed that aspect of the running game, they’ll miss it again this week.
Just hope this is not a sign that alls not well in Chowville. That frustration over losing is not bubbling within the team ready to erupt in negative ways.

Even though the Warriors are struggling this year, I’m so into Hawaii football, (have been since the late 60’s) I would have loved for them to have that extra game, especially since it is a home game. Although, I don’t go to the games at Aloha anymore, I still watch them on ppv. The money making is the bottom line though. Go Warriors!

Hard times? During the VA era, I gave away my tickets for some of the games because of my wife’s work schedule. The regular ticket holders in our area would tell me later, that nobody showed up in my seats. As the season wore on, I couldn’t even give away the tickets. I had good seats too. The last game, although it was on regular tv, I sat and watched it by myself. My tvgate partners gave up. Good thing for the blog, although most of my comments weren’t very good. Maybe I should upgrade the menu.

I would add that not only does UH pay to use Aloha Stadium but UH does not receive any revenue from parking and concessions (as posted previously).
Parking and concessions alone would bolster (to a point) the bottom line for UH Athletics.

Don – It just boggles the mind. And people wonder why UH can never get ahead. So many ways for the State and Upper campus to hold back the Athletic Dept. If I want to buy a UH shirt or cap, I want my money to go into the coffers of the athletic dept, and not the General Fund.
Reminds me of the story of when Coach Price caught hell for not getting permission from someone in the Upper Campus for letting his players drink from a faucet and hose in the Quarry back in the 70s. Some things never change.
On Shroeder
Anyone who is a fan of boxing understands what happens when a boxer is relegated to being a sparring partner for a champ. A person who primarily serves as a sparring partner loses the ability to throw sharp, crisp, snapping punches, with power, by virtue of the nature of his role in preparing champions.
Shroeder is like a sparring partner. He looks good in sparring sessions, but he gets wiped out in actual fight sessions.
On Higgins
Higgins, on the other hand, is a fighter, not a sparring partner. He performs when the bells rings, not when he is in the gym doing pitter patter with the other fighters. He knows he is in a real fight when the bell rings, not a practice fight where the defenders are told not to hit the QB, and he reacts accordingly. Hence, he is a gamer, in parlance of many who post here. This is why Higgins moves and Shroeder doesnt.
We all know people like Shroeder and Higgins. The problem, it seems to me, is that Chow did not recognize this difference between the two early on. This is problematic and disconcerting for a number of reasons. If a HC can’t distinguish between the two fighter/player types after losing seven games and winning one game, it tells you something about the coach. That something is not a good thing.

The on campus store for all logo merchandise makes a manini contribution (as compared to the profit made) to UH Athletics.

@#64 Don: According to the Legislative Auditor, 67% of Aloha Stadium revenues come from the Swap Meets. The stadium had an operating loss of some $4M in 2010 fiscal year. In fact, it has never made money…but if you take away the accounting convention of “depreciation” it does make money. In that same year, the depreciation was $4M or so. Parking and concessions are less than $1M. It appears the contractors and vendors make the $$.
Putting the “he practices best” argument to rest once and for all
One poster in particular has insisted that he being the only one who is at practices regularly, his opinion concerning who practices best is the opinion that should be given more weight and deference.
To this is I say the following: (1) who practices best is a poor measure or factor to use in deciding who should start (see Exhibit 1 – Sean Shroeder); (2) that one else is there to observe the practice and therefore, you are not entitled to draw any conclusions about who is best, is like saying you didn’t show up for the bubble blowing contest and therefore, nothing you say is of value on the question of who best blows bubbles; and (3) give me a player who can command the O and score some points and I’ll take that player as starting QB any day over a person who “practices really well” (see Exhibit 2 – J. Higgins).

Ooops, sorry. The 2013 and 2014 division format is a lock. The 14-team format still has to be approved. Each schools schedule will include 5 divisional games and three cross-overs.

David Graves – projected starter, went from #1, to #2, to WR, to scout team??? What the hell happened? I know he can at least be a contributer somewhere on the field like say special teams.
George Daily-Lyles – thought he was the next coming of Solomon Elimimian and some of you have stated before. He went from starting against USC to who knows where?
Sterling Jackson – Guess the emergence of Joey Iosefa and Will Gregory doesn’t allow him to get some run anymore

On the run-heavy, run-first offense vs. pass first
Seems that unless you have Earl Campbell or Barry Sanders-like runners in the backfield, you should go pass first. If you don’t have these kinds of backs, maybe a Dorsett-like back too, then you look toward a passing offense, assuming you have a kid with a decent arm, who is mobile, and some decent receivers – things which I believe we have at UH already.
I don’t believe we have a Campbell, Sanders, or Dorsett-like set of backs at UH, and I highly doubt we will ever be able to recruit these kinds of backs to UH with chow at the helm, given his record as HC and the decisions he has made thus far as HC.
To declare to the nation this is what we are doing – run heavy, run first – and then to install shroeder to lead this effort, was both futile and incomprehensible from the start given the lack of these kinds of backs. I said this at the beginning when I said chow would have to earn my respect, through wise decision making, and I continue to say this now.
Regarding the now defunct Temple game, I am “guessing” that Coach Chow wanted to use this game to convince recruits from the Maryland and D. C. areas to commit to Hawaii. So far, Hawaii has offerred scholarships to about 35 players from the Maryland/D.C. area and has no commitments. Of the 35, 13 have committed to other schools (12 remain undecided). But a win over Temple might have snagged one or two. It would have been a gamble.
You like the play of the two freshmen from Florida (Ne’Quan Phillipps and Marrell Jackson)? Well these players Chow is going after in Mayland/D.C. are as good or better. So Chow saw the Temple game as a rare opportunity.
But Hawaii being Hawaii, there was mostly negative reaction from the fans.

It should not be a relief when UH ends a football season. But it is. All throughout JJ’s time, Mac’s time, there were ups and downs. This season was all downs. If you talk to mainland viewers they talk about “yeah, Hawaii, the run n shoot! June Jones! Go rainbows!” In other words, there is still a positive brand for UH football. How long is that going to last?
Chow is learning to be a HC. He is performing a job at 65 years of age that he has never done. If you are bank manager, and one day you are promoted to CEO, do you think that is an easy transition to make? HC is a huge task. To learn it at his relatively advanced age? We would have been better off letting Rolo go through his learning curve instead.
He probably shouldn’t be blamed. MRC was looking for a coach with “ties to the islands” and who wasn’t asking for millions. Everbody was alienated by Mac’s strange, possibly-pre dementia behavior. People were thrilled when we got him. I know I wasn’t the only one wondering, “wow, we got this guy for cheap. And he was a career pro/PAC-10 coach?”
In the typical ohana, island way, Chow will be given the “whenever you please, sir” Daniel Akaka type farewell. He’s been promised all of next year, right? It’s the way kapuna are treated here, and it’s probably humane actually. Mac was treated like dirt, but I doubt they would do the same to Chow.
Nex time will be decision time though. Does UH want to be legitimate D-1? Then break out the big bucks and pay a real coach who has a record of success as a HC at the highest levels. Not paying the $1.5 – $2 million plus will get you a has-been or a never-was.
Hey, if the school admin feels the advertising, PR from having the UH football “brand” on national TV don’t add to the prestige, visibility of the whole school, then just back down. And we’ll move to Iaa. There ain’t any painless alternatives.
Where’s the Ohana? There is no Ohana. That’s why some of us resent losing Vili the Warrior and not having Hawaii Five-O before the start of the game. Having a wholesale change to our culture without consideration to the fans nor the athletes. Yes, he is the coach. But, you reap what you sow. This coach was born here but has been away for most of his adult life. Then it should be no surprise in his actions.

At linebacker, Chow (Thom Kaumeyer) is now starting TJ Taimatuia, Branden Daley, and Art Laurel, with Kamalani Alo and Kendrick Van Ackeren getting significant playing time. They mix up the line-up quite a bit depending on what the opposition does. What’s happened to George? Don’t know. But I believe the best players are playing. Why Sterling Jackson is not playing? I don’t know, but significant playing time is being given to John Lister. Joey Iosefa, Will Gregory and John Lister were the three that rotated at the running back position. Like many, I thought Sterling Jackson would be a contributor. But it has not happened. Time to move forward.

I would really like to comment that the cost of car insurance differs a lot from one plan to another, simply because there are so many different facets which bring about the overall cost. One example is, the make and model of the automobile will have a large bearing on the cost. A reliable outdated family car or truck will have an inexpensive premium over a flashy sports car.

Coach Mack flipped out on Aaron Brown in 2010 during the NMSU road game for diving into the endzone on a Pick 6.
Yelled at him as he came off the field and Brown was walking away to the bench and Mack followed him and kept yelling even more.
i think Mojo’s point is that Mack clearly saw AB do his flip. Chow didnt see Gregory throw the punch, he was just relayed that message from the refs (and apparently an assistant coach according to some bloggers).
i wish they woulda caught that on camera and showed the replay. i wanna see how hard he punched the boise player haha.

I’m all for the best players to see playing time. To say George Daily-Lyles isn’t on par with the rest of the LB’s is hard to believe. He’s been contributing since his freshman year. Same with Graves, they’ve proven their productive enough to get PT. Sterling Jackson too. But ah, Chow is who he is so doesn’t matter anyway just think it’s kind of funny how you had guys who played and contributed the whole time they’ve been in Hawaii and now probably have screwed their football playing days by staying in Hawaii playing for Chow who’s sent them to the doghouse.

Anyway, glad the Warrior Basketball team looks promising this year. They should be better than the predicted 4th rating for Big West play. We have the big men to bang, Hauns is lights out, Spearman is solid, Jace is proving to be a nice facilitator with the rock as well. They just need to take care of the ball a little better and not be so careless but I see this team having the potential to have at least a 20 win season and possibly playing in March. They should be able to dominate the new conference this year. Fotu is a baller, once he gains more confidence in his ability and becomes the focal point when Vander leaves, he is going to be abusive in the paint.

anyone who has taken top post has always tried to do it their way or make changes. it’s only through time trial and error will things eventually settle.
im not pro chow-im pro understanding how management works. chow will tweak himself when the season is over but for now it’s difficult to change within and he will pass every mirror and see nothing wrong with his “style”.
grade chow on season 2. demanding people yes are set in their ways. it’s not until the smoke has cleared can they see clearly past and beyond what their initial vision might have been. and when they do see clearly, they will make adjustments.
they say for a football team the biggest improvement comes between weeks 1 and 2. for a coach, it’s between years 1 and 2. its unfortunate the season went the way it did, but it’s almost pau. i would suggest people take down fences, unite, and finish out the season with a spirit we can build on. there is much to hope for–recruits, graham, new leadership at UH, and a coach who will have time to reflect. let’s hope those who are in chows inner circle can be honest with him to be truthful and speak with candor-because that’s where the biggest and best changes will come. chow says he doesn’t know what else to do. the answer, not all changes are changes you make ON things…sometimes it’s changes you make WITHIN things-including yourself. not saying this in a harsh way, but in more of a peace within way.

#101 Hey, IT That’s a terrific idea, not just for recruitment but a guy like Maa has such great experience from a very successful organization, if he can translate that to young men along the d-line that could even open an avenue from him going forward.
I don’t think the UH higher ups would ever recognize any of the Noga brothers, if they have not done so by this time, too bad.

I understand what you’re saying about the Gregory incident. I have no problem with him being sent to the locker room, or facing more punishment during the week, but I just think that these kinds of things happen on the field all the time. Missing the game last week is technically a one game suspension. Now he’ll miss at least one more? I just think it is a bit of an overreaction. But that is just my opinion. I respect yours too. I am more in favor of that game counting as his suspension and then making him roll during practice a few days or stuff like that.
BTW . . . I also saw that head butt by Bright that wasn’t penalized. Someone on here pointed that out earlier too.

Its funny. There was once a conversation about fights during practice – being examples of players showing their competetive side and how they were good every once in a while to keep things lively. Yep, according to conference sportsmanship, being ejected from a game is considered a violation and would be subject to a one game minimum suspension by the conference.

If Chow didn’t act, the conference would have brought down punishment which would be worse because they keep that stuff on record for the duration of one’s college career. So, if there are any subsequesnt violations one could be given a stiffer penalty next time around.
btw . . . I in no way condone fighting on the field, because I believe players should be disciplined. I guess I just figure it comes with the territory sometimes. Afterall, they’re not out there playing hop scotch.

Gregory’s mistake in hitting that player is in no way indicative of his character, in my opinion. Sometimes in the heat of the moment you don’t think rationally. But if you commit the act, expect the consequences.

When I was in playing JV football, we were playing a pre-season game. I went in for my first series. As I was walking back to the huddle after the play, a d-lineman from the other team pushed me in the back and I fell down (we were having a lovely conversation on the line and I think I may have said something he didn’t like). I got up and charged him and threw a punch at him. My o-line coach ran onto the field, grabbed me by the facemask and literally carried me off of the field. I didn’t get any playing time that year.
Suspend him for the 1st half.. and if we’re still in the game, put him in.. if not, suspend him for the second half, too. Game time decision… đ
Maybe UH should hire Rick Neuheisel as he’s not coaching now. Slick Rick can bring his guitar and have the team sing Kumbaya after practice during the team meal. So many feelings have been hurt and Rick can help mend things.

I’m far from being a Chow apologist. When names started surfacing for the job I posted I’m for ABC, Anybody But Chow. Said his time had passed and we need a young up and comer.
I support him now for one reason only – he’s the HC. For me it would be counter productive not to. I don;t agree with a lot of the changes he made, a lot of his tactics and his overall handling of the team. But I’ll support him as long as he is the HC.
I’m definely not a Chow apologist, I leave that for Rockne. I’m a team supporter.
134, that will never happen. Chow will get at least another year. We will go 1-11 or 2-10 this year. If we go 2-11 or worse next year, he will get the pink slip. Otherwise he will get a third year and if the 3rd year is a losing record he’s history. If he doesn’t change as a Head Coach he’s curtains. As a long time OC, I think it was over his head being a HC. He himself said in the beginning he was wondering who was supposed to call a timeout. At his age, the younger head coaches are running circles around him with their innovative offenses and agressive defensives against us. Let’s not remember, Fresno St. could have scored 70-80 points against us easily. That’s how the difference one year can make. If you ask me, the selection committee sucks and I doubt they are football people or even played football. And that’s sickening. Forget about Hawaii football. We should be talking about the good stuff, Wahine volleyball and Gib Arnold’s basketball team. Now that’s a team that has some potential after 3 solid wins.

My biggest fear about the season is coming true. Attendance is taking a big time hit. It’s going to take a lot longer to get the FB program to where most fans want it to be if they stop buying tickets.
We’re a grass roots program supported mainly by the ticket buying public. We don’t have any lucative TV deals or many deep pocket boosters to finance the athletic dept. When football revenue is down all sports will feel some effect.
Many people have decided to save their niceties for WVB or MBB and dump on the football program. Winners deserve praise losers deserve whatever criticism they receive. I guess that’s how sports is.
I’m from old school fandom. Support your team win or lose is passe.

Attn people questioning Chow… You can’t change a program in one year. It’s extremely rare to have success in the 1st year of a complete overhaul of an offensive system. It’s been mentioned before by knowledgable fans, but what JJones did in 1999 may never get repeated again. Most programs that have gone through a similar situation to UH takes a minimum of three years to get back to a good program.
Anytime there’s a coaching change, there’s going to be attrition and there’s going to be players that don’t get along with the new coaching staff, especially when the coaching styles are completely different.
Just look at the UH basketball team… It’s taken Gib Arnold 3 recruiting classes to finally get the players he needs to move the program forward. This year’ BB team is probably the best talent they have had in decades. Remember, it’s taken 3 years to get to this point… And BB only has 5 players on the court (typically 15 on a roster).
Football has 22 starters + special teams (typically 100+ on roster) The average recruiting class is 20-25 players. Unless you’re Alabama, LSU, Oregon, USC, or Ohio St, you ain’t going to have great results in the 1st year with a new coach because they have too talent on their roster.
Greg McMackin left UH with arguably the worst toater since the Von Appen days. It’s easily the worst WR corp UH has ever had. Harsh but true — Mack didnt recruit a single good WR or QB. Salad & Pilares were both recruited by Jones and Moniz (Mack’s best QB) was a walk-on that beat out every scholarship QB Mack recruited for 3 straight years. There were 4 new starters in OLine prior to injuries, so that was going to be shaky regardless of the offense. As it turns out, this group has really struggled to pass block and with combination of bad WRs, the run n shoot would have failed miserably this year and our best offensive players (Gregory and Iosefa) would be rendered useless under Mack/Rolo’s offense.
With 2012’s roster talent, I don’t how anyone could think UH would be doing better under the run’n’shoot (or whatever you call the version Rolo turned it into).
I’ve gone on ad nauseum regarding the defense so I don’t need to repeat why they’re having a tough year.
9 games into Chow’s 1st year is way too soon to pass judgement. If UH doesn’t improve by Chows 3rd year, then I’ll admit I was wrong about Chow.
Just add to my previous post… UH’s best WR, Billy Rat Stutzman, is only at UH because big brother Craig played for JJones…. Otherwise Mack probably doesn’t get him.
Can you imagine how bad run n shoot would look like with Orstrowski, Gant, Bright, Harding and a poor pass blocking OLine??? You could have Johnny Football at starting QB and he’d be awful with Mack’s leftover roster.

#153 If you recall it (poor pass blocking) was already showing up in Mack’s last year. Moniz was getting his bell rung and like “true fans” there were those calling for Moniz’s head (re: Timmy Chang).

#152 What you seem to lack in understanding is that there was no need to change the program. And that recieving corps that you believe is so bad was good enough to win 6 games last year and would have a full year under their belt to excel this year. Quit making excuses for Chow, it doesnt take a football genius to see that he is in way over his head and that he offensive is outdated and cannot work here. The I formation is the dying offensive in football and the only ones who run it have the 4-5 star athletes that Hawaii can never give. So if you have a traditional drop back 4 star quarterback, who are you going to play for Alabama, Georgia, Southern Cal or Hawaii (with a 65 year old head coach who cant coach his way to a victory over a division 1 team). This roster is not as bad as you want to make it out to be. Last year, the Hawaii running game averaged 4.1 yards a carry, this year (in an offensive that is supposed to be running offensive, blah, blah blah) they are averaging 2.9 a carry, with 11 more carries through 9 games than they had all of last year. If you can look at the body of work that Schoerder has put in and what Graves was able to do, it is so clear that Graves gives you a better chance to win. Let’s talk about the defense, they are ranked DEAD LAST in scoring defense in the NATION. That never occured under McMackin(actually they were consistently in the top 50), so yeah is recruiting is all to blame, whatever, this isnt McMackin’s fault. Chow is a failure, 9 games is more than enough to see to pass judgement. If he was the coach some of you think he is, we would be getting better with each game, not worse. Wait two more years, you may see an empty staduim. Hard headed, arrogant, and out of touch, that wraps up Chow.
Cost cutting measure: Install bleachers at Ching Field, in excess of 30,000 like a War Memorial Stadium on Maui. Attendance will take a hit next season, but will increase once the team starts winning under Chow. You may a have hard core fan base of around 18,000 or so that will continue to attend games. Schools like CSU, Wyoming, New Mexico, and even SDSU have suffered from terrible attendance for decades.

Gotta be creative with getting that many people onto the campus. One idea would be to ban cars around a certain radius around the Upper and lower campus (like Dole Street) and bus in fans from key points near and far. Put in 30K to 40K bleachers that could be the foundation for permanent ones down the road with press and corporate luxury boxes.
Yeah, I know there will be critics slamming this, but UH needs to start thinking out of the box. It would certainly be a boon to the surrounding neighborhood restaurants and watering holes. I believe a lot of the surrounding land near UH is owned by Bishop Estate.

Let’s be honest, and again this is just my opinion, from my observations. The previous regime won games DESPITE their head coach. McMackin, let’s face it, was not all there. Kind of an air head, and lucky to be head coach to tell you the truth.
Warriors won games despite of their head coach. If it weren’t for Rolovich, Aranda and Miano etc., this program would have dipped way below vonAppen under McMackin. Absolutely no doubt in my mind.
In fact, in my opinion, if McMackin somehow dound it within himself to keep his thoughts to himself over the years, keep his mouth closed, not speak, and lets his staff coach the young men, he would still be here stealing money from the university.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t, so he’s gone.
Now Chow, here’s my take, for what it’s worth. And please remember I respect all other opinions.
I love the discipline he’s trying to install, because it’s been lacking for too long.
I don’t like the results mind you, but I am willing to take the journey with his philosophies, his style, and his “ways”. Fundamentally, I appreciate Chow’s input, to me, it’s been a breath of fresh air!!!

I disagree. That so called airhead recognized the talents of Rolo and Aranda. Made a tough decision when he promoted Rolo over his lifetime friend, Ron Lee. Was an excellent DC in his own right. Created the summer bridge program. Brought down the number of personal fouls.
A friend of mine says it was medication that his prescribed to him that made him a little incoherent during the last year or so. I dunno. Maybe so. But Coach Mack always put the student athlete first, then the program. He always wanted to give the fans what they wanted, too. He listened, and responded. With Coach Chow, it’s all an enigma.

OH yeah.. he also helped pull our football program through the worst recession since the Great Depression. Had this been 2008, going into 2009… you could kiss half the season ticket sales goodbye.
It was very interesting to hear NC on the Call The Coach program say that he liked the way Air Force plays a brand of football that suits the type of talent that they can bring and that he wants to do that type of thing here. Doesn’t that mean he would consider modifying or getting rid of his pro set schemes? Was kind of shoked to hear this. Maybe I’m reading too much into this but don’t know how else to interpret what he said. Or maybe be is just coming to realize the difference in talent level he will be forced to work with and is adapting. In any event, I liked hearing his openess to change. Change is constant. Adapt and innovate or die. Go Warriors!

Saying it, is a start. But can he be an offensive guru running anything but the Pro Set. I guess we shall see, eh?

Yeah, we don’t need to talk about Coach Mack like he was a bad guy, because that was one thing he wasn’t. Chow is a completely different type of coach. People are going to just need to get used to it. It is way to early for people to be calling for his job.
In terms of rules violations? Some of that gets discussed on other boards, and frankly it sounds like much ado about nothing. Until someone actually speaks out, then it is all speculation.
New coaches have their guys, and unfortunately get rid of ones that they feel don’t fit. On the one hand we expect Chow to bring in guys that can fit his system, yet on the other hand refuse to accept that he is trying to make room to bring in his guys. I think this is what is happening with guys like DG. As an original Graves Digger, this of course is hard to accept. But if we want to stop crying about losing, shouldn’t we let the coach do what he feels needs to be done for the future?
As much as we have seen of coach Chow’s offense which has been plenty I do not think that we have seen all that he has to offer. Coach doesn’t run the pro set. Coach Dave Holmes ran the pro set and Chows offense is very different from that.
#182 mih i agree, i like coach mack too, heck of a dc. his only fault, and a real big one, was he didn’t allow rolo to open up the offense and make modifications (like two backs, or adding an extra blocker) to the rns. and the offense numbers went down each year. jj’s best year was in 06 with reagan mauia as a blocking back. he probably punched harder than mike tyson, it was funny seeing de’s just quit on the play when they see mauia waiting for them in the backfield. that is what nc should incorporate into the offense, somebody like brendan daley to be an extra blocker. that on-line te doesn’t seem to be doing the trick.

Second, re #152. Is there a way to defend Chow without dissing the kids on the team? They were recruited for an entirely different system. That’s not their fault. But instead of dissing the kids, why not JUSTIFY Chow’s management of the players he does have? Great coaching utilizes the talent at hand in the best way possible. What has Chow done to maximize the opportunity for the team to win NOW?
By the way didn’t Mack recruit Rodney Bradley? But for that Idaho leg whip, he would have been one of UH’s all time greats. And Trevor Davis and Stutz are quality.

The thing that bothers me the most about Chow’s handling of the Gregory incident is that it just seems WRONG. No matter how I try to give Chow the benefit of the doubt, everything I see indicates that he mishandled that situation completely.
I haven’t said a word about the David Graves situation or the Levi Legay situation or the GDL situation or even the SS situation. Those are situations that I didn’t know enough about so I was willing to give Chow the benefit of the doubt (even though the SS situation has become clearer game by game).
But this situation with Gregory is ridiculous. Don’t preach togetherness and commitment and ohana and then stab somebody in the back at the first sign of trouble. IF Chow had talked to Gregory, got his story, and then decided to suspend him or kick him off the team, FINE. Just do your due diligence FIRST.
What Chow did is MORE stupid than Greenwood placing JD and RS on leave without any finding of wrongdoing. At least Greenwood could try to justify it by saying JD and RS needed to be relieved of duty pending the investigation. What is Chow’s justification for saying Gregory would be dealt with severely before even talking to the kid?

I must admit, I clearly do not see what was wrong about the way Chow handled the WG situation.

To me, I applaud the way he handled it, that’s exactly what I want my head coach to stand for. No B.S., no non-sense.
The kid clearly made a mistake, and I read on someone’s post that he was fighting way back, because he was being held down by a BSU player. I beg to differ.
As I see it, he was beaten on the punt, flat out beaten, and the frustration of being man-handled became too overwhelming.
As for GDL, SS, DG and some of the other players being talked about, well, I too do not know enough of the inner workings to pass judgement.
I do however, have opinions of some of those players.
First, I have yet to see anything displayed by GDL to convince me he is of Division I or FBS quality. Not a “diss” toward him, but he’s shown me nothing throughout his career.
SS, well, I do like the fact he’s shown a toughness as quarterback. Poor kid’s been beaten senseless here in 2012.
DG, I must admit, I did like his “rough neck” style of play in 2011, but I can see how it clearly doesn’t fit the new system. I mean I always thought that kid had heart. I too, would have found a place for him. I agree with many of you.
As far as receivers are concerned here at UH this season, I do think one word describes the unit.

As for some of the young talent, I love me some Benny Fonua, Lance Williams and Jerrell Garcia-Williams.

Bleed, yeah it is. Illinois guards will be the best we’ve seen so far, by far. Hope Jace can elevate his game. Makes me a bit nervous because he dribbles so high. But he has done well so far.

D1, hard to say. They lost their best big guy to the NBA draft. Size-wise, Vander, Christian and Isaac might have a slight advantage. The team seems to be more guard-oriented, 6’3′ and 6’4″ three ball shooters.

I see some folks completely missed my earlier point about the time it takes to change a program…
When UHBOR panicked and hired McMackin, the main reason why he got the job was to maintain continuity with the program and preserve the incoming recruiting class Jones was working on, which for the most part, the 2008 recruiting class maintained intact. McMackin’s 1st true recruiting class is the 2009 class…
McMackin’s “success” came off of Jones’ recruits. Mack had a few good JC transfer pickups over 4 years, but I can only count on one hand the number of good prep recruits that are contributing this year. I counted only 9 players are getting any sort of playing time this year from Mack’s 1st recruiting class of 2009 (that’s pathetic!!!)
The program was able to stay afloat with Salas and Pilares (Jones’ recruits). Alex Green was excellent, but underused by Rolo and Mack lucked out with Moniz fitting into the system. Again, a walk-on pizza boy beat out all of Mack’s scholarship QBs: David Graves, Corey Nielson, Cayman Shutter, Kevin Spain, Justin Alo. Not to mention that 2 walk-on QBs (Schroeder and Higgins) beat out the returning QBs from 2011.
So in four years under Mack, his scholarship QB recruits have a grand total of 3 starts, and only because Moniz got hurt. That’s really bad by all measures.
Moving Mack’s WR recruiting over his 3 recruiting classes:
*2009 scholarship signees included: Rodney Bradley, B-R Stutzman (That’s it, seriously! Only 2 WR scholarships)
— Stutz is the best receiver in 2012, but is only average in terms of what UH had under Jones; Bradley contributed, but was the #3 option behind Salas & Pilares
*2010 scholarship signees included: Samson Anguay, Darius Bright, Corey Lau, Bubba Poueu-Luna, Allen Sampson
— Anguay converted to safety, Poueu-Luna hasn’t played, Sampson & Lau quit the team prior to 2012. Bright barely contributed in two years
*2011 scholarship signees included: Chinedu Amadi, Trevor Davis, Cecil Doe, Chris Gant, Scott Harding (walk-on)
— Amadi & Doe have not contributed; Davis & Harding play but are average at best.
I can keep going down the roster but moving on…
The Oline play had steadily declined all throughout Mack’s tenure. Notice the lack of NFL OLine prospects the past few years? UH always had one or two NFL potential linemen prior Mack taking over. Actually, the Oline play started declining after 2005 when Oline coach Callahan left for Oregon St. He was an outstanding coach and a huge loss for UH. Believe it or not, I thought the 2006 UH team was better than the 2007 12-1 team because the Oline was much more solid. In the 12-1 season, Colt Brennan was under much more pressure and was hurt for a good part of the season (concussion & ankle). 2007’s schedule lined up much more favorably, which is how they got into the Sugar Bowl and Brennan broke all his single season records in 2006.
2012 can be summed up like this: Needing to replace 4 starters from 2011 + injuries = bad news
Defensively, 2012 is a washout year… UH had to replace 5 of the front 7… which is tough to begin with. Add in a ton of injuries makes it a really bad situation. This is where Mack’s poor recruiting really shows up… Because Mack recruited heavily with JC transfers in 2009 and 2010 (few prep recruits), most of those recruits were finished with eligibility after 2011, leaving a serious shortage in 2012 upper classmen (this is why there’s only 9 players from Macks original class). This has forced Chow to play much more true freshmen that haven’t had the chance to go through a full strength & conditioning program and are clearly not ready to play.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… UH is going through the exact same situation as Wazzu after Coach Mike Price left the program. Price had just taken the Cougs to the Rose Bowl and left the program in excellent shape… then his DC (Bill Doba) got the job… Doba couldn’t recruit, the program began to slide… by year 5 Doba was fired. Doba’s early recruiting classes were heavily JC transfers and few prep players (just like Mack), and by the time of Doba’s firing (ironically after a 5-7 record, same as Mack’s final season), there were no quality players left to replace all the departing JC transfers. That left a mess for Paul Wulff and he was forced to play too many players that weren’t ready to play and the rest is history. I think Chow is a better coach than Wulff so I believe UH will recover faster than Wazzu has. And as you have seen, Coach Leach is having a hell of a time with Wulff’s recruits. Wulff was laid back and didn’t push his players to improve (similar to Mack). The similarities to UH and Wazzu are shocking.
The silver lining to this mess is that Chow’s freshmen are getting valuable experience and once they go through a full offseason of S&C, they should be much improved in 2013. The biggest factor for 2013 will be a clean slate of health. UH has got to be one of the most injured teams of 2012.
Actually Chow has some very promising freshmen we all should be excited for… Jerrol Garcia-Williams, Bennie Fonua, and Lance Williams look to be solid LBs. Garcia-Williams could be awesome if he can add 20lbs. Marrell Jackson looks like a stud at safety. Will Gregory has been excellent.
UH actually has one of the best RB corp in the west coast in Gregory, Iosefa and Lister. Once the Oline improves, these three will really shine.
Chow has 2 commits that will bolster the line immediately in 2013… Theres a 305lb DT coming and then there’s Charlie Tua’au (6’3″ 270lb DE). Tua’au looks like a monster (look up his youtube highlight video). Plus there’s another 6’4″ 285lb DT/DE that’s has UH as his top 3 schools. There are others but they will probably need redshirt to get bigger. Bring back a healthy Friel, Samia, Matagiese, and a bigger/stronger Yap, Woodard, Falemalu, Andrade… and the DLine depth and size problems largely go away. Jury is still out to see if these guys are good, but 2013 will be vastly improved over this year.
As far as the QB spot, I’ve been defending Schroeder as serviceable for 2012. Sean’s a tough, smart player, but lacks the physical gifts and time to throw… Hard to be good when you’re getting hit on every play (See Mike Vick and Ely Manning). We’ll see if Higgins gets to start vs Air Force… Overall I don’t really care about 2012 QBs because neither of them will be playing next year barring injury to Taylor Graham.
After watching the decline in roster talent over the past few years and hearing whispers from within the athletic department regarding McMackin and his players (mainly that McMackin had no control over the program, and was a very poor leader in the locker room), the 2012 season isn’t a shock to me at all. Looking at the lack of upper-classmen on this year’s roster and looking at all the starters that Chow had to replace (The 2012 media guide says 14 starters lost from 2011), 2012 was going to be a very tough year.
You make Nick Saban replace 14 starters and even Bama’s quality of play will go down. Actually, Saban had to replace 11 starters this year and it’s noticeable that this year’s Tide is not as good as 2011. The drop off is greater when its not a top tier program.
I think a healthy UH team would have 3 wins at this point. My pre-season prediction was 5-7 and I thought that was a stretch looking at the roster and knowing the changes that were coming. I guess the other silver lining is that the boys are still playing hard. I don’t see any quit in them, even during a blowout. They may be over matched, but they aren’t quitters. That’s a testament to Chow’s work ethic he preaches.
In summary, I’m not worried about 2012… 2013 is where the real strides will start to be made. Again, I expect UH to be much more competitive and the offense will start to be more consistent. It may not lead to more wins, but I expect to see some tangible progress. I see flashes of good play this, but it’s non sustained for a whole game. I think around 6 wins for 2013 if UH can stay healthy,

Be happy basketball has started and Gib Arnold (IN HIS 3RD YEAR) might have assembled the best UHMBB team in decades. Gib had to purge the roster from Nash’s garbage players. He had to plug the holes with some questionable JC guys, but they’re gone for the better… Now its truly Gib’s team and it appears UH will be good on the rise for years to come. (or until UHBOR falls asleep at the wheel again and lets another good coach slip away).

Former UH Athlete: You seem like a smart guy, so no need to rewrite history to make your points. Moniz was the #3 QB in 2009 and became the starter after two injuries. Graves and Shutter were redshirting. Folk lore says he came out of nowhere, but Moniz had a good run as a JC QB while those others you mentioned were in HS.
By the way, most of the former UH football players with recent ties to this team have been very vocal in their support for Graves and have questioned why he doesn’t see the field. At QB, or in any capacity. I think the most common disconnect on this blog is how Chow is using THIS year’s group of kids. With respect to them, please stop making them out to be scrubs. 11 kids starters graduated last year? So half the starters last year were seniors? Why is that news? Very common in college.
Hawaii was 6-7 last year, could have easily been 9-4. All games were competitive. We weren’t anyone’s Lamar. So is this staff coaching players up, or are they tearing them (many of them) down for future years? Get what your saying about Macklin, often, but show the kids who committed to this school some respect. They are already getting hammered, and I’m not talking about game day. Thanks.

Cannot really compare Coach Gib’s basketball team as an example for this 3 year rule you talk about. From the beginning when Coach Gib took over the program he went out and recruited his type of players. Unfortunately a lot of them left before he even had a chance to develop their games. This past year when guys like Joston, etc… left the team it obviously left Coach Gib more opportunity to go out and recruit a few more guys to fill spots. To say it took him three years to get his type of player is wrong. The only player left from the first recruiting class is Davis Rozitis, Jace Tavita, and Vander Joaquim. His second recruiting class Garrett Jefferson, Hauns Brereton, Brandon Jawato, Christian Standhardinger.
2010 – Bobby Miles, Joston Thomas, Pi’i Minns, Trevor Wiseman, Dominick Brumfield, Bo Barnes are no longer on the team
2011 – Shaquille Stokes, Tyler Brown, Orel Lev are no longer on the team
Basically Coach Gib had to pretty much recruited a whole new bench of 9 guys. So thus the reason we have 9 new guys on the team. To say it took Coach Gib 3 years to finally get his guys is wrong. He had his guys, just that none of them stayed. If all these previous players stuck would he have the current roster he has now, nope. This years team is much better as a unit because they play like one. The leadership of Seniors Vander, Hauns, and Jace is what makes this team go. They are very unselfish players and lead by example. There are no more attitudes on the team but a bunch of players who all respect and play for each other. The football team needs to follow suit in that regard.

im not one to back up Mack, he was terrible at managing the game and terrible at recruiting. if u look over his recruiting, his classes were horrible. luckily for Chow, i think Mack’s last 2 classes were actually pretty decent. its a matter of Chow utilizing that talent properly, which he is definitely now.
i dont mind us losing, but we’re getting flat out embarrassed every week. for me at least, i turn on the tv every weekend knowing we’re gonna lose bc Chow will not give us a chance to win. he shows no urgency. we play games like its a control scrimmage. “we dont look at the scoreboard.” what a joke!

I agree with Former UH Athlete for the most part, but others have some valid points. My take away from FUHA (How’s that for an acronym?) is this:

Former UH athlete. Good points and that’s what I’ve been saying all along. The OL needs improvements bad. WR needs better prospects, rb solid, DL will get better but still needs IMO atleast two DT an two DE, LB solid corners are solid(cant expect corners to defend too long DL needs to put pressure) but still IMO needs two more and one more safety to compliment M Jackson, and of course QB(graham). But IMO the most important thing chow needs to get is OL….
Re #246, yeah, there are so many factual errors in your post, it’s really hard to respond. Just as a jumping off point: how many starters did Mack have to replace his first year and who did JJ have stocked up ready to go? Start at QB, please. Oh, and you obviously have NO clue re Rodney Bradley.

#248 wow, just like that, you are easily fooled. the men’s basketball will probably go .500 in the big west. that sound about right to you? just because some of the members of this years team was tearing up the manoa summer league for 40+ points a night, doesn’t mean that’s going to continue in ncaa ball. yeah they looked good against teams that most people never heard of, that couldn’t shoot. they still managed to average 18 turnovers a game. you think they looked athletic, they’ll look much like the football team once they get into conference play. and that’s only the big west. a mediocre, mid-level conference. coach gibs still doesn’t have any players not named vander.

According to KHON2 news, this past game against Boise St. was the lowest attendance in over 35 years. So, I guess it WAS lower than last year’s Tulane game.
The Coaches know their player’s attitude and character on the field best. If they feel that the player needs to be suspended a game or more, it’s really up to them. Getting ejected from a game isn’t punishment, it’s getting what you asked for. Suspension is punishment.

I think it fair to say that every coach needs the personnel to fit his system and coaching style. It does not mean that the inherited personnel of a new coach are not good players. It does mean though, that recruiting is essential. Which in turn means a coach needs a chance to recruit. Which one would logically assume means a coach would be given the time to do so before extreme prejudice prevails. More importantly though, we should remember too, that a coaching change is hardest on the athletes and that though there may be displeasure with the change, these young athletes deserve even more support from the fans as they remain steadfast in representing the people, the school and the State of Hawaii. Empty seats mean empty hearts and they don’t deserve that.

@#290. Liz: Glad you said it…Hamura’s is overrated. I remember my first time there decades ago, it was very, very good. Now they are like Zippy’s, quantity over quality.
#282 correct on jj, correct on mack. hurricane fred didn’t leave jj with much, jj did an amazing job with the sr class (robinson, ulbrich among others). his second year he had to go with timmy (rolo didn’t have a clue that year) and did a lot of losing. but that was the only year he wasn’t winning. i think nc lacks the full time gimmick that can lead hawaii to winning seasons (spread/option of paul johnson to the rns of jj). the team shows spurts of excitement on offense, they had it the first half against nevada. stuff like the quick passes on inside routes or running a no huddle offense seem to bring them more success. i wish they would do more of what works and less of the stuff that don’t work. and nc needs to find better defensive coaches.
#292 you don’t get quantity from zippys, that would be rainbow drive inn. it’s hard to find quality drive inn eating now days.

The highs of fan exultation and the lows of fan frustration are the emotional swings of passion. We all strive for success in our lives and that is no different in how we satiate our entertainment appetites. Everyone wants to win and nobody wants to lose, but that is the reality of competing. For the most part, it doesn’t matter how a team wins, but it matters greatly to a fan if their team loses and more importantly, how their team loses. Edge of your seat losses are more easily digested than blowouts are which leads to how we cope with the hunger for victory. All fans think they have the answer and many times they are correct in their assessments, but most of the time its the emotions they wear on their sleeves that echo their sentiments. Not a bad thing, but not always a good thing. It’s the passion for success that fuels the fan fire and the association of representation that fills the soul.
