"Heal-Up Week"

Coach Norm Chow has declared this “Heal-Up Week” with concise practices and more rest for the ailing Warriors.

Yesterday’s ailing list included middle linebacker Benneton Fonua, who has strained knee, and right tackle Sean Shigematsu, who was in a medical boot because of a sprained right ankle. Later, guard Ben Dew was carted off after aggravating a leg injury. Until the injury, the second-unit offensive line was: LT Jordan Loeffler, LG Dew, C Kody Afusia, RG Frank Loyd and RT Kapua Sai.

There is optimism that running back Joey Iosefa and weak-side linebacker Art Laurel might be available for the Colorado State game next week.

If not, there is an interesting Plan B: Fullback Jared Leaf has been getting reps at running back. For a big guy (239 pounds), he’s surprisingly agile and a very consistent receiver.

Keith Uperesa leaves today to recruit in American Samoa.

One of his stops will be with Penitito Faalologo, who is expected to join the Warriors in January. Faalologo originally signed in February 2011, but delayed enrolling because of a family situation. He then further delayed his UH start while addressing some academic concerns.

Sad to learn of the passing of former Warrior Shephard Killen, a great guy who left us too soon.

Don’t forget to check out former Rainbow Wahine softball  player Kate Robinson’s softball clinics next week.

Here’s the link: Robinson clinics.

GO WARRIORS!!!!!!! COACH CHOW, WE’RE BEHIND YOUR LEADERSHIP!!!!!

    GET THEE BEHIND ME, NAYSAYER!

R.I.P. Sylvia Kristel. Sad. Ironic thing is that there IS a film in the series called Goodbye Emmanuelle [emphasis a Grease’s] (1977) and . . . if a Grease is not mistaken, the series still continues after that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Emmanuelle IV (1984). Ahem. If the series had Emmanuelle marry a man with the last name “Lewis,” uh, she might have some . . . you know . . . people laughing at . . . and there’d be problems with the legend . . . and . . . um . . . anyway, for reals, R.I.P. actress Sylvia Kristel.

I must say, Leaf was really impressive yesterday.

He’s definitely a north-south runner, but he does have some moves.

  10. gigi-hawaii October 18, 2012 7:36 am

Gee, sad there are so many injured Warriors. Glad this is Heal Up week. Well deserved rest for both players and coaches!

Good luck to Uperesa in Samoa.

Hope the vibes on the Warrior Beat blog today are positive ones! Too much negativity lately.

I don’t care if people are critical. But there are two people (one?) who says the same freakin’ thing every day. I feel like I’m working at the DMV.

  16. Will-I-Am October 18, 2012 7:48 am

This schedule is throwing me off. I feel like we are either just finishing training camp or that the season is almost over. I just don’t feel like we are smack dab in the middle of UH football.

ST, is the schedule for next year done? Is it posted anywhere?

  17. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 7:49 am

By the way, I thought it was amusing somebody saying Chow has a low-key approach.

Now Mack, Rolo and Aranda had low-key approaches.

Chow is not the quiet type.

  18. tommui October 18, 2012 7:50 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Heal Up Guys!

Today’s meeting of the Regents should be interesting.

JD has been working at his new job for a few weeks now. Wonder if the attorneys on the BOR and its staff attorneys heard of the concept of “quasi-contract”?

  19. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 7:51 am

    Will-I-Am:

There is an outline of a schedule: Four non-conference games, it shows. It looks like those games are Aug. 31, then three in November/December. So there’s a 10-week puka to place the MWC games. I hope, at least, it’s home, away, home, away …

One home game in seven weeks just doesn’t cut it.

  20. Shoko October 18, 2012 7:55 am

Thougt I saw Oregon State on the schedule, too.

  21. jeezy33 October 18, 2012 7:57 am

ST, last week I thought you said Josh Long wasn’t the TE UH was after. Now it changed?

  22. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 7:57 am

Whoops, my bad. There are five non-conference games:

    Aug. 31 — USC

Sept. 7 — At Oregon State

    Nov. 9 — At Navy

    Nov. 30 — Army

    Dec. 7 — BYU

Looks like Hawaii making a strong push at 6-4 juco WR Joe Morris. Could be that big play guy we been missing past few years.

  25. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 7:58 am

    Jeezy:

Yep. Now it’s changed. He is a person of interest.

  26. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 7:59 am

They’re going after some tall receivers but they’re still trying to figure out the numbers. There might be some room if some guys graduate on schedule.

  27. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 8:01 am

By the way, who made next year’s schedule?

    Annapolis in November?

  28. AlaWai October 18, 2012 8:02 am

    Mr. Tsai:

Any word on Florida recruiting? “I feel the need, the need for speed!”

  29. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 8:03 am

UH also has to go on the road to Nevada.

Not sure if Wyoming comes back into play when they do the switch off: Boise/SDS for Utah State/SJSU.

  30. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 8:04 am

    AlaWai

The intent is to go get more Florida speedsters.

But I think they also would like to bring back a pass-rusher from there, too. We’ll see what happens. Demo is a very persuasive guy.

  31. Kevin October 18, 2012 8:05 am

Did not know Wahine bballer Kamilah Jackson got married and is now Kamilah Martin.

Heard an ESPN 1420 AM commercial for the bows and thought they made a name boo boo.

Heh. A Grease doesn’t know if he could say “next in line, please” hundreds of times a day. Dunno if a Grease could tolerate that PING!!!!!! and red light from the “next in line” DMV machine either.

A Grease’s film festival picks playing over the next few days during this bye week 😉 :

ABCs of Death (not meaning to disrespect any recent deceased; this IS quite a film, composed of 26 shorts, a Grease believes)

Charles Bradley: Soul of America. Film on James Brown tributian.

The Castle of Crossed Destinies. HIFF’s obligatory samurai/chambara film of the season. This one has alternate history-isms.

Horror Stories. South Korea. Three (3) horror stories.

The Other Side of the Mountain. If you want to see what a North Korean movie looks like[!]

Dangerous Liaisons. Same movie, different time (1930s) and land (China/Hong Kong).

These are just SOME of the movies a Grease has already seen or will see.

It’s a bye week. Go to the festival 🙂

ST-Annapolis in early November isn’t always a bad thing. It is usually still early fall with warmish days (low 70s) and brisk nights. Then again it has snowed on Veterans’ Day. Still better than Annapolis in September when the humidity and temperature run in the 90s.

  35. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 8:07 am

  46. tommui October 18, 2012 8:17 am

ST – are you serious about NYU on the schedule? They are (or were) a Division III football team – the Violets (and people scream about our Rainbows?)

Took some classes there down at the Village.

  47. tommui October 18, 2012 8:20 am

ST – I looked at the schedule – I think you meant “BYU” not “NYU”.

The B is right next to N on the Querty keyboard.

  48. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 8:20 am

OK, now I see what everybody was talking about.

Sorry, I’ve had a little arthritis problem lately, so I mis-typed.

    It’s BYU.

    I’m going to timeout now.

  49. Moocher October 18, 2012 8:20 am

Heh, haven’t heard of the “Dr. Lao” film to which you refer; I will go look for it, however, and wtch.

Ah, ah, yes, though. I like the “seven phases . . . Dr. Chow” angle. Indeed, Alawai. 🙂

  53. Mrs. SB October 18, 2012 8:22 am

ST-Okay, I see what you mean by timing. It will be interesting to see what kind of schedule MWC gives us next year especially since there are 5 out of conference games already scheduled. By the way, isn’t the game on 12/7 BYU?

  54. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 8:22 am

    Yep. It was a typo.

That’s what happens when the B and N keys are near each other.

And for future reference, I meant to say if, ands or buts.

  55. RedZone October 18, 2012 8:22 am

So I think it maybe the first time we play Army, Navy and Air Force in the same year. I love it. I have always thought that we should haver created our own conference with those teams.

  56. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2012 8:25 am

I do appreciate how everyone is so polite to the old-fart host and they sort of hint there might be an error instead of saying: Hey, dufus, you typed “NYU” instead of “BYU.”

SubPac is still around, they have basketball on an intramural level if they can get enough guys who are not deployed. It was the late Chuck Leahy who brought them in….we didn’t have major conflicts in those days. Those were the good old days, I guess.

  61. Will-I-Am October 18, 2012 8:31 am

    I like it!

    ug. 31 — USC

Sept. 7 — At Oregon State

    Nov. 9 — At Navy

    Nov. 30 — Army

    Dec. 7 — BYU

Playing the military teams in Hawaii makes sense. We probably have the most bases per square miles in the U.S.

BYU, USC, Oregon state are fun games too.

I am LIKING those roadgames next year…wineries in Oregon and fall colors in Maryland!!!

  71. AlaWai October 18, 2012 8:53 am

ST: I believe Jim Leahy would have a lot of info on Subpac basketball. The coach Kiyoshi Matsuo was a three sport athlete at UH in the late 40’s along with Johnny Dang, Dick Mamiya, Harry Kahuanui and Jimmy Asato. Subpac had some good players that played in the NBA and coached at high levels. Notably, Bob Gaillard (USF), Tom Newell, Pete Newell Jr. etc. Subpac played in the developmental years of the Rainbow Classic at the then HIC.

  72. (Jesse) James October 18, 2012 8:54 am

Healing thoughts for the wounded Warriors!

Waiting for today’s real-life soap opera to unfold: “As Bachman Hall Turns”…

  75. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 9:00 am

ST, I reaally thought that the way the conference playoffs are now days, that we were kind of forced to play NYU at the end of the year. It may come to that in the near future instead of the days where we would play Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, etc.. This year’s schedule includes South Alabama for our end of the season “big game.” Lucky we got BYU for the last game next year. Anybody got our future “last game of the year” schedule?

  76. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 9:06 am

I remember a big name NBA star played for or in the league that Subpac played in. I could be mistaken on the name but wasn’t it Dave Debussure (sp)? Obviously I don’t know how to spell his last name (pst), but the person that I am thinking of also was a big time Senator.

  77. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 9:07 am

    pst=public skoo ting.

  78. AlaWai October 18, 2012 9:09 am

papajoe that player would have been Terry Dischinger who played for the Army.

  79. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 9:14 am

Thanks Ala Wai. I used to watch some of those games at Block Arena. Bringing back memories. The Hawaii Marines were always a very competitive team. I used to also watch the state amatuer boxing championships or golden gloves championships there too. The military was very good but in most cases the local boys would win out.

  80. turfwar October 18, 2012 9:15 am

Thanks for the news on Shep ST. He was one of the really good guys. Through 10 years of doing the Dick Tomey Show I was fortunate to call many of the guys a friend. And some like Sheppard, Joe Nobles, and Tom McCarthy were even kind enough to make my wedding. Shep was called Mr. Aloha for his acquired penchant of wearing aloha shirts on Fridays and had a personality that just sparkled with life. Aloha Shep, you were one of the really good guys to come through the program and will be missed by those you touched. Condolences and heart felt aloha to the Killen family.

  81. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 9:23 am

Speaking of long time ago, the younger generation today probably didn’t know or can’t imagine that athletes in college weren’t allowed to play as freshmen. There were a lot of JV teams back then. UH football even had a JV team and played teams from the military or even the old Hawaii Football League, and at times would play a visiting team from Japan. I remember Lew Alcindor’s (later changed his name to Kareem Abdul Jabbar) JV team at UCLA, beat the varsity, who was either a defending NCAA champion or won it that year.

  82. PowderPuff October 18, 2012 9:26 am

d1, yes definitely. I haven’t been to Oregon on vacay since my brother’s graduation from University of Nike 12 years ago….I am ready to go back.

Heartfelt condolences to the Killen ‘ohana. Those teams back then were so fun to watch.

  83. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 9:26 am

  88. Old School Dave October 18, 2012 9:39 am

RIP Shephard Killen and condolences to his family. I remember him catching a 2-point conversion back in 83 (?) that won the game for UH against UTEP. He was a good athlete who was recruited as a WR, but grew into a TE, if I’m not mistaken.

  89. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 9:46 am

Would be nice to have Iosefa back in the lineup this coming game. Gregory is doing a decent job but I like guys who can just pound. After this week of rest the team needs to seriously get into ass whooping mode like for real. We are facing some bottom dwellers that should be easy wins if the team can get their ish together. CSU, UNLV, South Alabama, I mean if we cannot get these W’s then well, what is there to say??? Hope the defense can learn to stop the run against UNLV, cause if not John Hardy-Tuliau’s teammate from high school is going to tear up the defense… Bradley Randle!

  90. Samui Island Weddings October 18, 2012 9:47 am

  92. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 9:55 am

Just wondering if the target is to go after tall receivers why aren’t we using some of the guys on the roster. Like where is Cecil Doe? Isn’t he like 6’3″?… I’m sure him lined up with Darius Bright could be good in redzone situations…no???

  93. jeezy33 October 18, 2012 9:58 am

I don’t get why everyone thinks Cecil Doe and Darius Bright are supposed to be good just because of the height.

Fans need to realize that neither produced much in JC and weren’t really recruited by anyone.

We kind of took a risk on upside and so far hasn’t paid off much.

  94. al October 18, 2012 9:59 am

  97. al October 18, 2012 10:01 am

to be a good receiver you must first be able to receive/catch the ball.

then, you must run proper routes and be able to recognize coverages to make the proper adjustments.

    if not, then you sit.

  98. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 10:05 am

It doesn’t matter if you are a tall receiver and cannot catch the ball. Doe and Bright both played this past game. Their size looks good on the field but I think both dropped balls. I think if they can hang on to the ball then they will really help the Warriors. Imua!

upon watching the leahey and leahey show…perhaps mike lafaele would make for a great grad assistant or something for the warriors.

    i think he could inspire.

his very candid interview did hit the nail on the nose several times.

  101. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 10:10 am

jeezy, I think both receivers came from programs that rarely passed the ball. We did take a chance on them. Doe looked good in the last game but I think he couldn’t hang on to the pass. al is right, you also have to run the proper routes too. I don’t go to practices and don’t have their playbook, so I wouldn’t know about that. I just rely on people who I trust and does go to practices.

  102. chowDER October 18, 2012 10:17 am

al: best receiver on the team then?

  103. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 10:18 am

But boy did those 2 receivers get plenty hype when they were recruited. Too bad it didn’t work out as expected.

  104. Annoddah Dave October 18, 2012 10:19 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

For those who wonder about SubPac and the other Military teams in the salad years of the Rainbow Classic, the reason why the military had good college and pro type players was the Selected Service Agency. Every young male in America over 18 had to serve unless you had a classification of 4F. If you did not enlist, you were drafted…not by the NBA obviously, but by Uncle Sam. Two years of free training, housing, food, and clothes. Plus they gave you enough money to catch a bus! Of course, Elvis was the exception!

  105. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 10:20 am

You would think being a JuCo transfer they would’ve played more but I guess not. Thanks for stating the obvious though of a receiver having to be able to catch and all that, sorry I was clueless that’s what they had to do in order to see playing time how silly of me. Besides no one said anything about Doe or Bright being good because of their height. Seems pretty odd that these guys playing D1 football can’t catch, run routes, etc…man who the frikk recruited them and actually thought they were good enough… Regardless, I think every receiver so far has dropped balls. The ones that get me which stand out are guys like Miah who are supposedly sure handed…

  106. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 10:24 am

    #103,

It’s funny how every player gets hyped up when they are recruited here. Then when they don’t produce as expected the ones who hyped them up are the same ones who blame the recruiting efforts and bad talent levels, etc…so hypocritical.

  107. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 10:29 am

    @Annoddah Dave

I don’t recall every male over 18 had to serve. I do remember that men between the ages of 18 and 26 be required to register for the draft. I think even in WWII it was a lottery but you still had to register. I can’t remember all of my Social Studies lectures.

  108. madeinhawaii October 18, 2012 10:36 am

    Annoddah Dave:

There were other classifications as well..

1-O (Concienscious Objector – most went the Civil Service route or became ministers)

4-D (Deferred status – could be for any number of years between until the age of 27)

  109. madeinhawaii October 18, 2012 10:36 am

    Oops.. Conscientious

  110. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 10:42 am

    @Pauoa Boy

It’s in our nature. We see the vids, the physical traits, the stats, and we get all worked up. It makes good coffee table conversation for some and bar room enthusiasm for many. I get caught up in the hype too. Can’t deny that.

But the bottom line is the live on-field performance against your opposite counterparts. You either dominate or be dominated.

Fun to have the hypocritical opinions. Shows the passion of individuals. Also makes for entertaining reading.

Recruiting is not an exact science, sometimes work out, sometimes bust. But somehow, plenty teams get PhD’s as recruiters, like the SEC.

  111. letsgowarriors October 18, 2012 10:46 am

i was never hyped about Bright. i questioned his recruitment bc he didnt produce at CCSF, but everyone kept sayin NFL potential. same w Brandon Leslie, questioned why he didnt produce at COS. but everyone was hyped on him bc he had lots of stars and went GaTech.

  112. Bryson October 18, 2012 10:49 am

Too bad we couldn’t get Stevue Johnson’s younger bro Dre Lewis…He’s a Utah Commit who’s tearing it up right now in JC’s…

  113. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 10:51 am

Plus, we only human, can’t expect 100% efficiency from every player on every play. Drops happen, miss blocks happen, turnover happens, penalties happen, breakdowns happen. But one thing that sucks is the timing of the miscues and the number of miscues. Just need to minimize them.

I’ll let the coaches and players figure that out.

    GO WARRIORS!

  114. mo808 October 18, 2012 10:52 am

    Good Morning!

    Get well wounded Warriors!

    Re: Some local boys,

    from staradvertiser on 10-27-12,

UNLV senior linebacker John Lotulelei (Baldwin ’09) had a career-high 19 tackles, including 11 solo stops, in a 42-37 loss to Nevada on Saturday. >>

Western Oregon quarterback Cody vonAppen (Kalaheo ’08) was 16-for-27 for 424 yards and four touchdowns and led the Wolves to a school-record 696 total yards in a 66-20 win over Dixie State on Saturday.

Sophomore Trey Shimabukuro (Kauai ’11) threw a 22-yard touchdown pass and receiver

Lucas Gonsalves (Saint Louis ’09) had three catches for 25 yards and

returned four kickoffs for 74 yards. >>

  117. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 11:07 am

Seems like Hawaii, over the years, went the JC route. I think more DON’T make it than do. A lot of them drop out or just cannot make the speed of the D1 football game, although they look good in JC. I don’t know how, but can someone look up how many football players from the JC ranks actually have significant playing time and graduate from UH football in the past or even in the past few years. I recall a few years ago that many JC players were not on the roster at UH toward the end of their supposedly career. I don’t know what year it was but it might have been 10 years or so ago or even longer.

  118. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 11:08 am

    111,

I still think regardless if the player blossoms into a star or not he could be used somewhere on the team. Especially a JuCo guy, who is normally recruited to help out immediately. Recruiting is a tough cookie though as far as evaluating talent. There is always that kid who is good that blossoms into great. There are others who were great that fade into obscurity. Unless were recruiting obvious beasts like a Julio Jones type player, or say a Manti Te’o, you will never know huh…

  119. papajoe2 October 18, 2012 11:13 am

I you haven’t seen it already, I typed in PBS Hawaii, clicked on programs, clicked on local programs and clicked on Leahey and Leahey Show. I got the last show with Lafaele as a guest. It was kind of brutal and sad at the same time before Lafaele came on. Lafaele talked about the lack of emotion of the Warriors. Very interesting show. Maybe the players are afraid of showing emotion with Coach Chow at the helm.

  120. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 11:14 am

    @papajoe2

Aren’t you retired? You can look it up and report back to us.

    @Pauoa Boy

Yeah, that’s why I said it’s not an exact science. My hopes would be, like you said, that they blossom into great. I take the good with the bad. At least the kid is getting an education and hopefully be successful after his playing days are over.

  121. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 11:20 am

Different eras. Lafaele played on an emotional team and environment.

This team is different, could be the coaches, could be the players, I don’t know.

Emotion isn’t everything. You don’t have to show emotion on your sleeves to play with passion.

  122. Kevin October 18, 2012 11:25 am

Its wasn’t that long ago when people flipped out EARLY in McMackin’s tenure that they questioned the purpose of the haka saying that “too much energy” was spent doing it and practicing it.

  130. A-House October 18, 2012 12:01 pm

    Seletive Service:

at age 18, all young men had to register with their local draft board.

then, you can volunteer or wait for the draft or get a college deferment or 4F for whatever reason.

saw a lot of the 4Fs being drafted during Nam and it was difficult to run a “company” with so many of them – give the NCOs credit for doing a magnificient job in getting them up to speed – enough that they contributed to our successes.

with the “mordern Army/Navy/Air Force/Marines/Coast Guard, technology “drives the train” – saw the “changing of the guard” as I left the Army in 1968 with the new weapon systems being developed with required “high tech” training – even the basic soldier had new weapons, radios, etc which needed a higher level of intelligence/training for success. The days of Gen Custer were over.

  132. Warrior Dave October 18, 2012 12:03 pm

Current teams lack of emotion is due to changes made by Coach Chow and staff.

IMHO, was energy if Haka done properly before kickoff. Also sets a lack of emotion to come out with arms linked together.

Would rather they just buckoose when they come out. At least it would get the players and fans blood pumping. But that’s only my personal opinion.

The second year my number was 19 but I had already chose to join. While in boot camp I got my draft notice which my dad mailed to me saying that they were looking for me. I took it to my CO and told him I had to go home because they were looking for me. He laughed took the notice and told me that he would take care of it. Per Hawaii Athletics.com:

University of Hawai`i at Manoa students can win an assortment of prizes simply by attending UH sporting events.

A “Student Rewards Program” is being launched November 1 and each month during the sports seasons the students that attend the most UH ticketed sporting events will receive wonderful prize packages.

The prize packages will include items provided by members of UH’s Corporate Partner Program, as well as other donated gifts.

Students scan their UH Manoa identification cards each time they enter a UH ticketed sporting event and the winners will be determined by a check of the student database by the UH ticket office at the end of each month.

Ticketed UH sports include: football, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, and baseball.

Winners will be selected for the months of November, December, January, February, March, and April.

Just throwing out a guess number of games from now until the end of the spring season in those sports mentioned. Let’s say there are 18 home games for mens and womens basketball making it 36 total, then 15 home games for mens volleyball, and 30 home games for baseball. Total is 81 home games.

What if 500 students attended all 81 games??? 😯

    Per ST on Twitter:

@StephenTsai: First scrap of the year. Star-Advertiser scores it 10-8 in favor of Darius Bright over Darryl McBride.

Before anyone says anything, players got into scuffles during McMackin and Jones’ tenures as well.

  189. jimmy the lock October 18, 2012 3:15 pm

10-8 score is like a knockdown or complete domination.

  190. madeinhawaii October 18, 2012 3:16 pm

Not so excited about the incoming freshman. Chances of any incoming freshman contributing immediately is usually less than 10%. We need to strengthen a lot of positions to win under Chow’s system. Unless 10 players currently under schollies transfer we may not have enough scholies to offer this year to make all that much of a difference. Got to hope our existing guys grow into their positions.

  191. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 3:21 pm

Fotu has the potential to be one of the best big men Hawaii Basketball has ever seen. He needs to stay on the hardwood and not the field. Tony Akpan and Ikaika Alama-Francis got freakishly big once they switched over to football, if Fotu kept his weight from 8th grade (300lbs.) then maybe he would make a solid DE or DT. But I say Gib needs to develop his big man skills on the court cause he could be dominating very soon!

  192. MikeB October 18, 2012 3:26 pm

Chicken Grease the analogy I was referring to, is that they both suck as head coaches.

  193. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 3:30 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I was thinking the same thing which is why I was breaking down the roster of what we have coming back next year, if everyone returns. Next year we should be somewhat better with everyone returning, having a year in the system and with a better QB in Graham. Plus defensively will be much better once we have a healthy Samia, Friel, and with our young LB corps gaining experience. Still we need to have a huge recruiting class this year and next to fill the holes cause honestly I don’t see much talent aside from the running backs and maybe the linebackers once next years Seniors leave. I may be wrong and I hope I am but the roster looks a little slim after next year.

  194. Pauoa Boy October 18, 2012 3:37 pm

Bright and McBride throwing blows… nice maybe it will get them fired up enough to start throwing some real blows against these upcoming teams. I really hope the team finds a way to get past bottom dweller CSU and gains some confidence because the next three games could get ugly with Fresno State, Boise State, and Air Force upcoming. If we get slaughtered by those three teams I don’t think we’ll have enough umph left to beat the other bottom dwellers in UNLV and South Alabama…

  195. Garret October 18, 2012 4:08 pm

I’ve been talking about UH taking paycheck games for awhile now, but $1 mil seems a little low now that Big 10 and other schools have agreed to pay $1.3 mil and more. Neutral site games can pay schools like BYU and BSU $2 mil.

The big negative for UH is that travel costs are NOT included–the travel costs will eat into the $1 mil check. When you consider that published reports have said that UH makes between $700k and $1.2 mil (when USC last came to Aloha Stadium), and travel costs increase as UH goes further east (like to the Big 10)…UH will probably net less money for a $1 mil game than they do from a regular game in Aloha Stadium.

Still, it will be great for the players to play in a packed stadium in a very different environment (stadiums like Michigan’s are much bigger than Aloha Stadium). The game could also help recruiting. The game would be on national TV, which is good exposure for UH.

UH may get less money for the $1 mil paycheck game than a regular home game, but the other benefits could be good for the team.

This could mean that UH might have 7 road games and just 6 home games that season. Since half of conference home games are road games, and half of home-and-home nonconference games are road games, UH will have seasons with just 5 or 6 home games if it takes 1 paycheck game each year.

So, UH could lose a bye week, travel to 7 road games, and have less home games…that is rough on the player’s bodies and their schoolwork.

  196. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 4:12 pm

man, if Garret Gilbert QB for SMU ever “gets it”, SMU will be deadly. Gilbert didn’t have much time to study the Four-Wide, but JJ’s D and Special Teams are pretty decent. 45-21 SMU, 3rd quarter.

  197. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 4:13 pm

chow could also go the JC route and get help for D-line and WR right away.

  198. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 4:14 pm

Always thought you had to be pretty passive-aggressive to operate in Hawaii.

Over 100 points in the SMU-UH game. One of the most fun games I ever saw was Timmy Chang’s UH-UH Hawaii Bowl win.

  208. madeinhawaii October 18, 2012 4:57 pm

Looks like SMU’s QB found his rhythm for today’s game… leading 59-42 halfway through the 4th qtr.. BUT.. looks like SMU could still use McMackin on defense

  209. letsgowarriors October 18, 2012 5:00 pm

nice to see some fire in practice. But bright has like 30lbs on mcbride lol

  210. letsgowarriors October 18, 2012 5:01 pm

agree, DL, WR and safety for immediate. If they not studs tho, rather just get HS kids

  211. AllG October 18, 2012 5:09 pm

    72-42 here in TX.

  214. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 5:14 pm

  216. Warrior Dave October 18, 2012 5:23 pm

Did anyone see the ending of the SF vs Seahawks? 4th and 21, Chop block in the endzone by Seahawks with 41 seconds left. Decision for Harbaugh to take the 2 points and receive free kick or decline penalty and take the ball. He chose to take the ball.

Why would you take points away to guarantee a win, even if you lose the free kick? Any thoughts?

Any thoughts on the effect on recruiting of LDS members now that the minimum age is 18 to go on missions?

  221. madeinhawaii October 18, 2012 5:55 pm

Heh.. if SMU’s defense was a little better they’d finish 10-2 or better, too.

  222. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 6:02 pm

    222. true dat, but the QB garrett gilbert throws a lot of picks (think, timmy chang), pick-6 and gives the D bad field position. When gilbert has his 3 and outs, which is a lot, the defense stays on the field and tires.

the TCU game was winnable, and their tulane game should have been a win 26-25 or some score like that, it’s why i say 10-2.

i watched all of SMU games except one.

  223. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 6:07 pm

  225. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 6:16 pm

SMU losses, @ Baylor 59-24, Texas A&M 48-3. those were not winnable IMO, no matter.

    SMU losses, TCU 24-16 (5 picks, 37.5 comp%) , Tulane 27-26 (1 pick 49comp%). winnable IMO.

  226. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 6:18 pm

    Howzit Tsai-kos!!

PP – I think Nov is a little late for fall colors. Trees probably gonna be bare by. 11/9.

FWIW, I have always been curious about the best time for Fall Foliage cruises, especially up in the Montreal and Quebec area. Met many people from the area on previous cruises and they all say it depends on the weather, but most agree the “guaranteed” best time is the 2nd week in October. So, a month later could be bleak as jm2375 notes.

Gonna do a Canada fall foliage cruise someday, but note that one major cruise ship sails for the Bahamas from Baltimore the day after the UH-Navy game (Nov. 10, 2013). Cruisers should check that out–especially if they fly cross country to Annapolis…

  230. 3-Prong October 18, 2012 6:43 pm

That Stanford win looks better and better as the Pac12 WVB season moves on with Stanford undefeated in conference thus far. Pac 12 must be tough with UCLA with 3 losses already.

  231. jm2375 October 18, 2012 6:56 pm

SteveM – #232 – the farther North, the earlier the leaves change. Can’t remember my biology, so not sure what the trigger is. Generally, Mid-Atlantic is a couple of weeks later than New England. I do remember it snowing on Veteran’s Day one year. Not sure if Baltimore is any better when it snows, but DC generally shuts down when there’s at least a half-inch of snow on the ground. One Washington Post columnist called DC the city that’s northern enough to snow and southern enough not to know what to do about it. 🙄

    madeinhawaii #222,

SMU defense returned 3 of 6 interceptions and one fumble for a TD. That means the defense scored 4 of the 10 TD’s . Houston also scored a TD on a 75 yd interception. Score was 72-42 SMU.

Wish UH defense could score 4 TD’s .

  237. madeinhawaii October 18, 2012 7:54 pm

    islandman..

LOL… I wasn’t aware of that! NO wonder the score was so high.. Thanks for the correction… maybe both sides of the team are coming together…. I’d like to see JJ do well at SMU..

  238. islandman October 18, 2012 8:08 pm

Garret Gilbert threw for 4 TD’s for SMU; he also threw one to Houston for the 75 yd interception TD. So that means Houston’s defense scored 7 of the 42 points.

  239. kev-1 October 18, 2012 8:21 pm

to add to what others said about Lafaele on the Leahey & Leahey show . . .

I never even thought about the culture of the team changing. Obviously it has, but for some reason I never considered it as having an effect.

When JJ was here, he changed the environment to resemble more of a pro environment, in terms of how he treated his players. More freedom, but some would argue less discipline. When Mack was here (and this is just my opinion, so I hope nobody takes offense), I think the lack of discipline increased and resulted in questionable effort at times.

But, Lafaele makes a good point about not being able to recognize the culture. In his efforts to instill discipline, Chow got rid of names, hair, and implemented strict rules and punishments. While overall discipline is probably better, has this eroded the attitude of Hawaii football?

UH was always the team that win or lose, opponents would comment on how hard they hit and how fierce they play. I doubt that is the case this season. And I don’t mean that necessarily as knock on the players. But, has UH lost its’ attitude?

  240. Cheree Eurich October 18, 2012 8:24 pm

Heya i’m for the primary time here. I found this board and I to find It really useful and it helped me out much. I hope to provide one thing again and help others such as you aided me.

  241. kev-1 October 18, 2012 8:26 pm

Would the wreckless, crazy, exciting, talented, Polynesian-fueled style of play a la Nate Jackson and Leonard Peters be able to exist on this team?

  242. Shhhhhh October 18, 2012 8:29 pm

Well, at least now UH lower campus workers no longer have to worry about players wrecklessly breaking the soap dispensers over and over again while horsing around and leaving the lockers in disarray with all kinds of missing gear and clothing resulting in coaches yelling at staff about players not having some of their gear available.

    Discipline is good no doubt.

  243. kev-1 October 18, 2012 8:33 pm

BTW . . . I am for the discipline. But could it have cost UH football its culture? Could there have been more balance?

  244. d1shima October 18, 2012 8:54 pm

Discipline seems to work pretty good for the Service Academies

  245. AlaWai October 18, 2012 8:59 pm

Discipline & Focus. Mantras of martial arts, the military and life…

  246. d1shima October 18, 2012 9:01 pm

Maybe the officials will take Hawaii off their “watch list”

  247. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:02 pm

If instilling discipline “cost” UH football its “culture” then what does that say about what the perceived culture is/was???????

A few complete passes here and some defensive adjustments there and we might have had won our second game of the year.

Dunno how “culture” plays into that.

Balance? MAXIMUM discpline is good and all coaches should strive for that.

The “balance” comes from carrying out a game plan and the players executing that plan is the next step of BALANCE.

Sorry, but digging deeper into this is only good for discussion to kill time until the next game.

  248. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 9:08 pm

it depends how that discipline is dished out.

  249. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:08 pm

    Kevin,

Your last sentence is probably why I brought it up. I only heard Lafaele mention it on the show and wanted to comment. Just probing the blog to see what people think. Again, I like the discipline. It probably just seems like the attitude is gone because of the blowouts. You make a good point. Proper execution of a game plan and adjustments prevent the results we’ve had, and the issue would be non-existent.

Still, perception of Hawaii football toughness, whatever that may have been, is being altered this year. There are players on this team that can restore the pop though, to be sure.

  250. RedZone October 18, 2012 9:11 pm

Hmmm…. changing culture of the team. Isn’t that why they changed the coach to begin with? The ones who are resistant to change are the problem.

  251. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:13 pm

Deep down people miss the culture of WINNING.

No amount of piped in recorded music, big helmets, long hair, and a half-asses Nike contract that cant even five practice uniforms for our players can bring that back.

Jones won because he was a good coach and the rest followed.

People connect the superficial part of the “extras” with having some direct influence on QBs connecting on pass plays and defensive stops.

The image and inconsistent view of UH football culture should be saved for online disussions to kill time until the next home game.

  252. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:14 pm

    Stupid iphone…

    Meant to say:

“Half-assed Nike contract that cant even GIVE our players practice gear”….

  253. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:15 pm

So . . . is this a good time to talk about uniforms, then? 🙂

  254. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:17 pm

    Toughness being altered?

Ok NOW we’ve got something to discuss!!

How does one believe that is lacking or altered?

Not saying it sarcastically, just wondering because I think this team got worked like no other in Spring Ball compared to the last decade.

  255. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:17 pm

Actually, the aerodynamic change to a players stride due to the new hair length rule should have improved speed. And I’m just not seeing it. Not to mention the weight differential that should have resulted from less fabric on the uniforms with no names on the back. There are some real issues here, people!

  256. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:22 pm

My toughness being altered comment . . .

After UH played USC when Bush was there, he commented after the game about the toughness and hard hitting style, especially of Peters. Over the years, coaches and players alike have consistently commented that when you play Hawaii, you know you are getting a hard hitting, tough team. What I mean by it being altered, is that losing in blowout fashion and not being able to tackle (although I attribute that more to scheme than player ability) – especially against the level of competition we have faced – is not going to leave anyone fearing UH’s toughness in the immediate future.

That’s all. Again, I think we got some tough as nails players that would like to challenge my opinion. And, they’d be right in doing so. When is the question.

  257. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:24 pm

I don’t mean player toughness in terms of work ethic or how they are disciplined or anything like that.

  258. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:27 pm

We can talk uniforms all night.

But I gave up around last year.

Some people don’t like our Under Armour uniforms and those same people do not understand and want to remain ignorant about how apparel contracts work.

Bottom line, Nike… after our Sugar Bowl year and sending a player to the Hesiman Ceremony was only going to STILL give us a contract that did not meet the apparel needs the Under Armour deal laid out.

People are ignorant if they look at Boise State and Oregon’s uniforms and accessories and think that Nike would be giving us things remotely close to that.

    That is just fact.

Yes Nike is ahead of the game, but they do NOT give all that stuff to all the teams they have deals with.

Yes Under Armour does the same. Maryland has the biggest deal with the most cash and the most apparel compared to UH.

However in the end this same Under Armour deal gives UH WAY more than what Nike was willing to negotiate in 2008.

UH football, softball, baseball, and soccer players now have multiple sets of footwear on and off the field, practice only apparel, and casual/pre game and postgame clothes, and of course uniforms.

I guess no one remembers watching UH football practice in the Nike era where players were wearing old tshirts underneath OLD REEBOK game jerseys as practice uniforms and shorts with holes in them??

But that is my view on uniforms in relation to our Under Armour deal.

People may not like the uniform styles, but fact is fact.

  259. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:30 pm

    Kevin,

Didn’t they still practice in uniforms with rainbow stripes still on them until they started to recycle some of the Nike stuff? And I’m talking while JJ was here. Or am I just imagining that?

Hmmm.. don’t remember that. I remember old Reebok jerseys and game pants being used under JJ during the Nike contract.

The Rainbow Warrior days were different cut jerseys wide at the bottom and not tapered like todays ones so would have looked awkward and should have stuck out.

Perhaps a few players got a hold of some vintage stuff taken off inventory and marked as “salvage” and used them??? Dunno.

I do remember white jersey #26…. god damn that thing was grass-stained to hell and back with so many holes in them.

Remember Daniel Libre? Yeah, poor guy had to wear that thing as #26.

Just checking.. dunno what the eff silver had to do with Hawaii.

The media guides said silver represented how the sun reflected off the sheets of rain in Manoa Valley.

What the hell is that? Did someone FAIL science in elementary. What dafuq happens when sunlight interacts with raindrops??? Rainbow….

    😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

  280. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:51 pm

I’m waiting for the post from the guy who will scold us, telling us that JJ is gone, stop living in the past, and support our current team, players, and coaches. Not to mention that uniforms don’t win games.

  281. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:53 pm

    Vili was good.

Dont care what anyone says, I miss that guy on the field.

    Nah,

Would rather see matte green. Our baseball bows had matte green helmets last season if anyone remembers. Wahine softball has some matte white lying around too and I think they’re getting a different color scheme this year. I asked if it was matte green like baseball, but dont think it is.

Baseball and softball get their gloves, bats, and helmets from Easton.

  288. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 9:56 pm

uniforms dont win games, but at least i can look good in my black, silver, green and white warrior jersey.

  289. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:57 pm

I like modern stuffs… Still young enough and not bitter yet to shun new things, but I still gotta stick with my roots and my school’s roots.

    GREEN AND WHITE.

BLACK from time to time on special occasions is fine too.

  290. kev-1 October 18, 2012 9:57 pm

matte anything, I want that too.

  291. Kevin October 18, 2012 9:58 pm

    Ohhh.. replay of Wahine Volleyball!

  292. d1shima October 18, 2012 9:59 pm

They may not win games but they do make the registers ring at the logo shop

  293. Kevin October 18, 2012 10:00 pm

Actually, matte white with black trim doesnt look good. The matte white finish attracts dirt like a magnet and hard to wipe off unlike the smooth shiny finish. Matte white, not good for outdoor sports, especially softball where dirt is everywhere.

Also I think I saw one of the teams we played against with a matte blue or purple, cant remember who but that was FUGLY.

  294. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2012 10:01 pm

I would be perfectly content with the design of Utah State’s jersey and helmets but off course in our colors.

  300. Kevin October 18, 2012 10:04 pm

Follow up on the post I forwarded her earlier today regarding UH Manoa’s Ka Leo Student Newspaper first reporting a hostage situation near lower campus.

Apparently is was just outside the back gate closest to the Duke Kahanamoku Swimming Pool.

    From the Advertiser:

Police today arrested a 33-year-old Moiliili area man on suspicion of felony abuse of a family member, first-degree terroristic threatening and intimidating a witness.

Police sent in officers from the Specialized Services Division to a Varsity Circle address. He was arrested at 2 p.m. at his Varsity Circle home.

  302. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2012 10:05 pm

    #300,

I think the simplicity looks good. If we want to do something special/creative with the helmet, it would make a nice contrast to a simpler looking jersey.

Dunno what theirs looks like, but sounds good. Just as long as the dominate color is our dark green or a 50/50 mesh of black and green and another 50/50 blend of green and white.

  306. Kevin October 18, 2012 10:08 pm

    This would be interesting.

  307. Kevin October 18, 2012 10:09 pm

BTW, Under Armour doesnt make helmets and neither does Nike.

  308. kev-1 October 18, 2012 10:12 pm

No, but who is responsible for the design on the helmets to go with the uniforms? Is it seperate?

  309. SAWARRIOR October 18, 2012 10:14 pm

have a chrome helmet, one side oversized H logo and on the other chrome colored oversized hawaiian flag.

    http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/962116/Concept_helmet_1.jpg

    this is oversized raider logo.

  310. Kevin October 18, 2012 10:15 pm

    Kev-1,

See that’s the interesting part. The helmets are PART of the uniform scheme. The uniform scheme is something crafted and decided on between the outfitter and the administrators at that school in charge that deal with the outfitter.

So its a collaboration of sorts and there has to be an agreement I imagine.

I think the manufactureres of Oregon’s helmets are Schutt ours seem like Riddell.

  311. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2012 10:16 pm

Or instead we make a collage of local Hawaii favorites.

Surfboards, costco, spam, club evergreen, ling hing mui, ihop, guy hagi, k-dramas (oops, i guess that would be a repeat of #4).

  312. Kevin October 18, 2012 10:16 pm

John Ortberg is an engaging and entertaining writer with a message. He likens life to a game. When the game is over, all the pieces go back in the box (casket) and what truly matters is not what you’ve won playing the game, but how you play. You can’t live life without focusing some on death. While the basis of the book can easily be summed up in the old adage of life is like a game and it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play, Ortberg gives fresh meaning to it based on scripture and Jesus’ teaching. This is truly a thought-provoking book and one that needs to be read by all Christians.

Also interesting that we’re playing BYU on December 7th. Too bad that couldn’t be switched out with Navy. Haven’t looked at the schedules of the armed forces. Maybe that date is already tied up between a couple of service academies already.

Have a great day, everyone! I’m still on my son’s computer, while he’s at school. Not sure when I’ll get my machine up and running… Priorities!…

Let’s say the helmet looks like cr_p, but we have a helmet that now conforms to the NCAA standard AND, is manufactured in such a way that concussions are almost non-existent.

Give me that helmet over anything that a cosmetic job can do to “look pretty”.

Safety first, pretty can come later.

    Buffoman,

I heard an interview if a personal injury attorney who works with many sports injury cases. He says football helmets are designed to prevent skull fractures, not concussions. Hence, skull fractures are extremely rare in football.

Facemasks. Ban ’em and the concussions will virtually disappear.

#343 One step at a time is probably the right steps to take. Concussions are simply terrible. More needs to be done to more fully protect these athletes.

Maybe without facemasks we won’t need names on the back of the jersey as we’ll see a face.
