Tachibana OK'd to practice

Coach Norm Chow today gave approval for linebacker Alema Tachibana to resume practicing with the Warriors while he awaits the outcome of his DUI trial, which was rescheduled until Friday, Nov. 23.

He still is not permitted to play in games.

Tachibana was not allowed to practice or compete in games after being arrested this past summer. He was prepared to go to trial this afternoon. But police officer called in sick, and the state requested an extension. Tachibana’s lawyer opposed the request. The judge favored the state’s request.

* * * * *

It will be a day of rest for the Warriors — well, except for the coaches, who will evaluate every play and aspect of the first six games.

The Warriors resume practicing tomorrow, with workouts also scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Friday and Saturday are off days. Then practices for the Colorado State game begin on Sunday.

The Warriors are hopeful running back Joey Iosefa and Art Laurel will be back for the CSU game. There’s concern about the hamstring injury wideout Trevor Davis incurred during warmups.

The Warriors also will use the bye week to focus on recruiting. They will be sending coaches to the mainland and American Samoa. The need? Speed, of course. And linemen.

Happy birthday to A-Sports.

  18. kapakahi October 15, 2012 8:39 am

    al,

Not saying that Graves should be playing at QB…..ahead of Schroeder…..or even Shutter or Higgins. That’s obviously not the plan…..since only the 3 QBs (Schroeder, Shutter, and Higgins) who dressed this past Saturday attended QB game plan meetings this whole week. Even Woosley was not included.

Just saying that Graves should be given opportunity to dress for home games…..and possibly contribute even on special teams….or somewhere.

  19. (Jesse) James October 15, 2012 8:40 am

Agree that we need to recruit some speed on D-fense as well as linemen.

  20. Chicken Grease October 15, 2012 8:43 am

Who else managed to see Ms. Rina Takeda (Dead Sushi; the name [namae in the Japanese . . . ah, you know the rest ;)] of the film, not a slight on her 8)) at the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) last night?

[a Grease cries, hits self over head (atama in the Japanese . . .) as he missed Takeda’s appearance/karate demonstration/photo op’ last night at HIFF.]

  21. kapakahi October 15, 2012 8:45 am

JMHO that slim pickings this year for legit OL (only OGs Koehler & Wa’a) and DT (Tulimaseali’i since Pagano committed to Clemson) prospects among local HS ranks.

  22. letsgowarriors October 15, 2012 8:46 am

i agree kapakahi. while i dont know whats going on w the coaches, from an outsider’s perspective, it seems like Graves is/has made a lot of sacrifices for the team. flipping back and forth between WR and QB.

  23. graham October 15, 2012 8:47 am

To me there is no reason not to start Shutter or one of the other guys. Isnt Shroeder only here for one year? We are not going to a bowl game anyway, might as well look to the future and see if Shutter can do it.

  24. letsgowarriors October 15, 2012 8:48 am

  28. Kapahulukine October 15, 2012 9:04 am

The season is already over. The patient has passed. The five stages of grief, we have been through:

Denial: UH homers, greeazzzyman denying anything’s wrong. “Just give the new system time. You are disloyal! A troll, a fraud! You no real Hawaii kine !!” “I am a former coach, and I know about this things!

Anger: Whose fault is it? Posters angry at getting blown out in embarrassing fashion four weeks in a row suggest new QB, system. Loyalist project own frustration, anger at critics. Negative tone ensues.

Bargaining: “Well we do have CSU on the schedule. Some teams may suck worse than us. If there is justice in the NCAA heavens we will win again.”

Depression — “Why bother with anything? The season was a forgone conclusion, so what’s the point? Greazzzzyman takes to jabbering in japonee, Gangnam by Psy, check it his moves!” Chow even says he has no answers on the radio.

Acceptance: Game attendance drops. Coach doesn’t bother to respond to critics. Even greaazzzy man not defending. The recruits for next year are two-star passed-overs, tops. No help on the horizon. In for wilderness years at UH football.

  29. Wes'side Warrior October 15, 2012 9:04 am

    Howzit, Gang!

    Happy birthday (again), A-Sports!!! Enjoy!

I just want to see improvement.

And I love when we do hurry-up. Seems that’s the only time everyone’s on the same page (for the most part) on offense. Instinctive play, instead of trying to think too much.

    Have a great day, everyone!

  30. Old School Dave October 15, 2012 9:09 am

I wonder if Norm Chow could have someone from USC or Utah in mind as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the football team? Since coach wants to build things from the ground up, it’s obvious that the current players will need to get bigger, faster, stronger, and more durable. UH looked somewhat gassed in the 4th quarter against New Mexico. Nothing against Tommy Heffernan, who oversees all UH sports.

  31. gigi-hawaii October 15, 2012 9:10 am

I think SS and the team really stepped up and scored when they were told to play hurry up in the 2nd half. Wish they started that way in the 1st quarter!

Chow should have the guys come running out of the tunnel instead of walking out. Let’s see some enthusiasm on the part of the players!!!

  32. Shoko October 15, 2012 9:11 am

Was wondering when someone was going to do a Kubler-Ross analogy. Didn’t think it would be this soon tho.

    HB to A-Sports!

  33. madeinhawaii October 15, 2012 9:12 am

I”ll wait to see what kind of recruits we get by April. That will be a more realistic indicator of the direction our Warrior program will take.

  34. Shoko October 15, 2012 9:12 am

We can practice, practice and practice. They can coach and coach and watch all the videos in the world to improve this team. I’m not bashing on the players, i support the players.

What Chow and his staff has failed to do and will need to work on is HEART, PASSION and CONFIDENCE on the players. A very few of the players might have it but not all.

  37. SteveM October 15, 2012 9:20 am

You’re correct! How could I forget about DT Jeremiah Taleni???

  39. kapakahi October 15, 2012 9:25 am

In addition to DTs Tulimaseali’i and Taleni, Warrior DL could use DEs Failauga, Correa, and Sale!

  40. maddog50 October 15, 2012 9:25 am

Confidence comes with success….I have seen some sloppy play but the effort that comes with heart is on display…I do not question the heart or character of these kids at all. They are frustrated and should be….now how do you respond…..change it up a little and get on with it—–

  41. kapakahi October 15, 2012 9:28 am

    #23,

Schroeder is a junior this season….and will have also have next season…..with expected competition from Taylor Graham.

BTW even Taylor Graham is allowed on the sidelines for home games during this redshirt season…..unlike others…..who are eligible to play this season.

  45. jeezy33 October 15, 2012 9:38 am

At high school level, Tufaga might be performing at highest level out of all the DTs. But size limited so big risk offering him. I like him personally though. I think he will put on some weight. Can’t teach his motor and quickness.

I get depressed seeing Jesse Williams dominate for Alabama every weekend knowing he should have been a Warrior.

  46. Old School Dave October 15, 2012 9:39 am

Saw Waianae’s Kennedy Tulimaseali’i play against Leilehua. I haven’t seen such a disruptive defensive player who could change the course of a game at the high school level since Manti Teo. He’s like a grown man among boys. Not too many players with his size, strength, speed (4.9- 40), quickness, and agility.

  47. AlaWai October 15, 2012 9:44 am

The “glass half empty peeps” should remember the number of quality Warriors who have graduated over the last 2-3 years. Green, Salas, Pilares, Mouton, Bradley, Pollard, Meatoga. Silva, Moniz, Brown etc. You don’t just replace these guys. You recruit potential, teach and build them and then give them spot experience. The youth of our team should be indicative of the number of seniors who have graduated. The fall off last year after Bryant was lost should have foretold of the need to rebuild this year. The last 13 years was built on recruiting players for the R&S. It’s a whole new era. Its a whole new culture. I for one like the class and discipline of this new philosophy. I am proud of this team. I commend them for handling this adversity. I wish those who blog remember that these student athletes are working their butts off to win games and the coaches are doing everything they can to see that this happens.

“Season already over.” Ah, all figured out. So Coach Chow and the Warriors should just forfeit the rest of the games.

Meanwhile — at some point in your life — you’re telling someone “ehy, no geeve up. Nevah geeve up.”. Right.

If the coaches are going to re-evaluate the players in midstream, then I think its only right that the QB spot needs consideration. For Coach Chow to continue to say that SS is his guy and then say “We need to re-evaluate the players,” is being in denial. You are 1 and 5. The QB/receiver sync is spotty. The defensive coaching or lack thereof is poor. We are being outcoached defensively. People are saying that we should trust the coaches because they know what they’re doing. On the otherhand, those of us that have been longtime fans know what we see. And what we see is not a quality product. We don’t expect to win but we don’t expect to be blown out, we don’t expect to have our coaches out coached.

Disruptive DT’s, when Andrade suits up next year, DT issues should be bearable. 4.9 40? I raced Andrade at school last year, 4.6 is legit.

I’ve refrained from comment about Shroeder…he seems “OK” enough… but… my vague recollection of most of the 4th quarter made me wonder: if we are constantly in the shotgun and sending 4 receivers downfield every play , maybe a Run ‘n Shoot quarterback with tons of passing experience should play? We may have a couple holdovers from last year sitting around….

Ah, yeah, SteveM, ahhahahah. “Advanced” is where a Grease started and ended, heh. Had a bit of respect for the “regular” D&D — at least they had a bit more stringent rules. When you have an “Advanced” Dungeon Master (little did a Grease know, many years after playing, the double entendre that title carried with it, hahah), tha’s just dictatorial at times. DM took my cleric’s church away because a Grease’s cleric used ONE non hoiy spell ‘against the dreaded Terasque.

Regarding Graves — he actually has a one year renewable scholarship — NCAA rules — Chow has already pulled scholarships on other players he did not want — the likely reason Graves was in the stands is Chow gave him a choice — you can keep your scholarship if you quit the team —– what goes around comes around — recruiting could become somewhat more challeging — oops not at USC anymore …. it seems like this website is for people who have absolutely no clue about what is going on.

I just hope SS learns to look off his receivers, puts some zip on the ball, and learns to move a bit.

  89. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 12:11 pm

    87. then, i apologize to you al. 🙂

  90. Down with.... October 15, 2012 12:14 pm

Chow is doing what he needs to do…SS is still there because he brought him in, havng graves, higgins, shutter play and succeed this season will make his decision next year even harder if, “they did well this year”. Taylor is in next year, no question there…SS to the clip board. The rest are on their way out. Hey, sorry this not little league and everyone gets to play….this D-1 and the coach got to make his move, even if it stings for some of the players from the old regime. He has at most 3-4 years to make a BIG difference in performance. Evidence? Jerrol Garcia Williams, nequan Philips, merril Jackson, tony grimes, SS, ben clarke, benetton fonua….all recruited by chow and starting (some of these guys true freshman). He has his redshirts waiting for next year, and his second incoming class to choose from (although maybe thin due to scholarships). I say give him at least 3 years before we start “chowing” his a$$. And for the naysayers who EXPECT results in the first year where 85% of your staff were painters and now your company designs websites (r-n-s to prostyle)….you obviously never worked a real job (well a position that mattered that is), never coached (a team sport), never played team sports (cause if you did then you would understand), and/or think because it worked on Madden 2012 every time that it must work in real life. But….you do have an opionion and that matters (well…I guess it only matters if someone’s listening). Anyway, we all not going agree, we all have our opinions, and all think we know what is best for the state and UH teams…especially football. But in the end Chow is the coach and you just sitting here reading this….so ask yourself this……you a supporter or the other guy?

  91. clyde October 15, 2012 12:17 pm

Stephen reported that Chow was going to make changes in hopes of a quicker start. So he wins the coin toss and — unlike the previous games — elects to receive. Then, on the first two possessions it goes pass, pass, pass, punt; pass, pass, pass, punt. It wasn’t until the first play of the third possession — by then the second quarter — that Gregory gets his first carry and runs for 32 yards. I heard Chow scripts the first 12 plays (and adjusts depending on the results), but was surprised he opened the game with six consecutive passes. Chow must have seen something he thought he could exploit, or wanted to change it up and surprise New Mexico. In retrospect, I wonder if starting off more balanced would resulted in a more positive start.

btw, chad ikei just donated 32K towards the kaiser hs weight room.

    1. A new nickname…Warriors v. Rainbows

    2. New school colors…black (or extremely dark green) v. Green

    3. New logo…”H” v. rainbow

    4. New pregrame warmup…Haka v. nothing

    5. New lettering & numerals…Jagged font v. helvetica?

With regards to all the criticism of Coach Chow:

There was a very well known and revered guru of quality. The Japanese even name their most highly sought after quality prizes after him, William Edwards Deming. Annually, the Japanese have their equivalent of the Oscar awards named after him, the Deming Prize.

In studying his methods in achieving quality, among his 14 points for achieving quality, one was constancy of purpose and another was all decisions made must support your long term goal.

It is evident from my reading of most comments that most commenters are not aware of both principles and obviously don’t apply it to their personal lives. To win or implement a good long term program, constancy of purpose is absolutely critical. Without that element, the program will just wallow this way and that way without any direction. Just win. Now! Without regard to the long term goal.

Make decisions without regard to the overall goal, just as long as results are achieved for the next game. Then, at the end of the season, then what? Start all over! Of course what has been left in place is nothing since decisions were not made with the overall goal in mind and no regard to the constancy of purpose.

I would hazard to guess that no successful program has ever been established with such a willy nilly decision making process. Even when new coaches are selected to established programs.

This season is challenging on a number of levels, besides the new coaching staff. 1) When the coaches talk about playing defense “faster”, it was somewhat evident this last game where players seem only a half to one step slower. But that makes a big difference in results. Compare to the days of Eliminian or Paredes where they “fly” around. 2) Coaching styles and experience. On the long QB run, it was shown that Woodward bit on the dive and the QB scampered all the way for the TD. Shouldn’t the DE just go and hit the QB on every play? Also, UH stuck with the man coverage without letting up forcing the DBs to run away from the play. Why not switch up to fool New Mexico? 3) Offense is not clicking and seems so disjointed, something unexpected under an offensive mind like Chow. We expected ball possession and consistent scoring. There seems to be few surprising plays that keep the momentum going and a lot of questionable calls – like the double reverse. If the offense could do what its suppose to do, most of the games would be closer, way closer. Why could we use Graves as a slotback reverse passing threat? Wouldn’t that be a surprise?

  102. Shoko October 15, 2012 1:00 pm

I was reading CSU’s football website (RamNation) and was smirking just a bit. Here’s one of just many Ram fans expressing their concerns. It may sound familiar…

“In my opinion, a good coach adapts his coaching around the talent that he has to get the best out of them. The fact that McElwain (Mac) apparently HAS to have his kind of player, according to some people on this board, is troubling to me. To me it shows lack of creativity, ingenuity and just an overall stubborness. I think that kind of coach is fine for a top program because they get what they want and get all the talent they want. But, for a school like CSU – you don’t get that. You better be able to be flexible and adapt your coaching to what you have or else you’ll go down in flames.”

Just like Warriors fans, so too are Ram fans dealing with growing pains. However, I haven’t heard any discontent about their QB. Then again, the first and second string are hurt and they have a freshman starting. Good news, folks, this one doesn’t run…lol.

As players are learning about coaches, coaches are learning about players. It is a process. It takes time. Even coach Chow said that the coaches will be looking at all the game tapes to evaluate all the players. I think that this will be an important week. I wish the bye was last week.

  105. westwind October 15, 2012 1:10 pm

Reality check. There are people that say you gotta give Coach Chow time to implement his system with the players he needs to make this change a success. Problem is that its all about the money. You won’t have the time. Many people in our community have their livelihood tied into UH Football at Aloha Stadium. From the people who sell beer to the many vendors that sell food and products. With the next loss at home and blowout away one can only imagine what the attendance will be at the next game. MRC Greenwood and her muscle RF fired the last coach after only one bad season. With dropping attendance and the likelihood of less season tickets sold in the future, even a favorite home son would have a limited duration to succeed.

  106. maddog50 October 15, 2012 1:24 pm

AlaWai….you are nothing but class!!!! I agree with most of your points…the only reason I can not say all is I do not pay attention at times I will from now on. These kids are caught in transition…this is big boy school. Every year they recruit players you can lose your job, it is the nature of the beast. The pure enjoyment of playing is competing and fighting and making yourself “untouchable”. I would like to believe Coach Chow has a plan….time will tell. Till then I support the Coaches—I see what thye are trying to do….the players sometimes they play with such frustration bad things happen. I believe in them I believe in the coaches and more than that I believe it will work out…..right now I just want a win, I will be in the stands for CSU and am looking to just have a great day and celebrate a

Warrior victory!!!!! AlaWai you are the best—-

  107. Down with... October 15, 2012 1:24 pm

@Westwind….I hear you but….we are a mid-major program. To expect a mid-major program to change it’s entire coaching staff including Head Coach, change it’s entire system and way of thinking (RNS to prostyle), given the existing structure (players) and expect them to compete in a (somewhat) tougher conference is asking a lot….and to think it would happen at year 1 is ridiculous. I don’t even think the top coaches in both pros and college and in the TOP conferences with the top blue chip recruits could do it (and the ones who have, are few and far between). So the reality check should be….lets not assume it could’ve been done in year 1 but realistically will take at least a few years to build. I don’t think MRC Greenwood, RF, JD, and all the other people in decision making positions are that DUMB to think it could be changed in year 1 or are they? My family has supported the UH system since termite palace, my entire family supports UH Sports, season tix holders 50 yard line since stadium built…none of us went to UH but….we support, good, bad, ugly, wonderblunder, tsunami, good coach bad coach….it don’t matter, so no it’s not always about the MONEY. Sometimes it’s just a chance to take the family to watch the only sporting event on the island i grew up watching and supporting….sometimes it’s a little more than just about the kala….a hui hou

  108. madeinhawaii October 15, 2012 1:25 pm

Right now some of my worst fears regarding the football program are being manifested… I didn’t want a coaching change but it’s too late to bemoan that. I didn’t want to lose the RnS, a proven winner at UH, especially for a Pro style… but again, it’s too late to bemoan that. I thought UH Admin put too much blame on the coach for dwindling attendance in an economic downturn. Once so bad that private school attendance also dropped 8%. If parents who sacrifice so much for their kids cut back that much, how much more would cut back on season tickets? Weren’t Women’s Volleyball ticket sales down more than 10%, too, in the past two years? Hope that doesn’t mean we have to replace the coach there, too.

Yet, here we are. Seemingly bad decisions abound regarding our football program – maybe our entire athletics department. But, all we can do is sit and wait and see what happens. Kind of frustrating. Hope we still got soap, at least.

I wasn’t able to ask about Graves until the very end when I went up to shake his hand. When I did, there was a little bit of awkwardness/hesitation in his reply. He said it may be something to do with yadda yadda the jersey numbers or the number of guys we can dress yadda yadda.

We all know that can’t be the case. Gut feeling tells me there must be more to it than we know.

  114. Warrior4Life October 15, 2012 1:41 pm

@102 – Shoko, I hope that TK plans for ALL contingencies just in case CSU decides to have their QB run. Remember when New Mexico’s first play from scrimmage and subsequent plays were a pass plays?

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 1:44 pm

Coach Demo did not sugar coat our current situation. The coaches are going to recruit hard because there are some issues with the talent level at hand. He called it like it is and said that the situation they adopted talent/personnel wise was not good. He noted the players are giving it their 100% and working hard every day, but it’s just not at the level that it needs to be.

  119. wafan October 15, 2012 1:57 pm

    Good afternoon!

  120. Former UH Athlete October 15, 2012 1:57 pm

2013 will be much better… Promise! 2013 means a clean slate of health, a full recruiting class by Chow, Taylor Graham (the real QB). Chow will get more pieces for his offense so things will get better.

Here’s a big part of the reason as to why UH is struggling this year:

This year’s marks the first senior/rs-Jr class from McMackin’s first full recruiting class of 2009. (’08 was JJ’s class, ’09 is Mack’s 1st full class on his own).

Of the 25 signed LOI’s in 2009, there are only 11 remaining on 2012’s roster (Sr: Ingram/Dunnachie; Rs-Jrs: Stutz, Clapp, Graves, Shutter, Laurel, Tachibana, Alo, Daily-Lyles, and Makainai) … Of those 11, only 5 actually were slated as starters (prior to injuries).

After needing to replace 11 starters from 2011’s team, just 5 starters from the 2009 recruiting class is terrible. UH was going to take a big step back in 2012 regardless of who’s coaching and what offense UH is running. Nobody knew it was going to be this bad, but UH was not going to make a bowl game with this year’s roster.

Like I said earlier, 2013 will be better. If Chow has a decent 2013 recruiting class, then I think UH will be about 6-6 next year. If Graham turns out to be as good as advertised, and Chow’s 2014 class (2nd full class), then UH will be back to a good program.

Football programs take a long time to rebuild, it’s not like basketball, where there’s only 5 starters and just two players make a huge difference.

In essence what Demo said was when you have less than superior athletes, you need to execute schemes and plays with perfection (Boise St). When you have superior athletes, you can afford to go off the course a bit and still be successful (USC).

  127. jonj October 15, 2012 2:06 pm

how do you propose he signs a good class??? We are getting blown out! we got beat by a team whos never won on the road in how many years??? Nothing shines right now… recruits gonna come on visit and the attendance is 18-20000??? to run a pro offense we need top level talent! I heard the top recruits he had given tickets to the game arent even coming. lol We need a gimmick offense to shine up what we have and then with chows contacts n recruiters/recruiting we can attract top level talent! look what Oregon did under chip kelly, ran the gimmick offense got the top level talent now is a championship caliber team. Top Level Talent + Gimmick Offense = championships

  128. letsgowarriors October 15, 2012 2:06 pm

  129. Shoko October 15, 2012 2:10 pm

    114. Well, It wasn’t any secret that NM would call more pass plays than their last game (three total). In fact, Davie hinted on opening up the passing game when he was interviewed by the hometown paper. I think TK knew what to expect. The trick was how to come up with a game plan and execute it to perfection. The Warriors demise was slow start and costly turnovers. I believe if the Warriors could get score first, then things might have fallen into place. Alas, that wasn’t the case.

Today at the Nakoa lunch I was very impressed with Demerest. What an enthusiastic fireball as a coach and positive approach to the 1/11th concept. Certainly as their 12th man coach in the mix he is a worthy addition and described the whole team as working very hard but still a work in progress. He was also very good in going through the film clips and explaining what, when, why, and how. Go Warriors!

  132. Independent Thinker October 15, 2012 2:18 pm

What’s all the fuss about. Anyone who thought Chow had the right stuff had to be delusional. Come on, be honest. Other universities had more than enough time to evaluate Chow and declined to name him their head coach. NFL teams evaluated Chow too and declined to name him their head coach. This should speak volumes about Chow and the prospects for him building a winning program as head coach. Some dogs have more fight than other dogs, and in deciding whether or not Chow had enough fight compared to other available dogs, everyone except UH said no thanks, Chow does not have enough fight in him as a dog in order to build a successful program as HC. Chow is what, 70 years old. Okay, only kidding about the age stuff. The ideal coach will be between 35 and 45, age wise. A 67 year old dog is not a fighting dog, no matter what planet you might be on.

  133. Down with.... October 15, 2012 2:20 pm

By the way…UH need money? Easy…recruit the Asian market (UH is “kind of” trying to do this). Bring in a couple of soccer players, a volleyball player, golfer, tennis, three baseball players, a football player (obviously needs to be fast or anomaly) from either China, Hong Kong and/or Japan and….presto! just like magic you have the entire eastern rim watching and supporting UH-tada! UH can corner the asian market (believe me the asian guy would rather go to college at UH in Hawaii then Alabama, even if we are ranked 116 and they’re ranked 1). Now if one of them actually goes to the pros-you now have a Ichiro type player and status….look at what Jeremy Lin is doing everywhere now and around the world and he hasn’t even started a full season (of course he’s from the US but you get the point of the asian market)…just thank me later

  134. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 2:20 pm

    letsgowarriors,

    mahalo.

Curiosity can either a dangerous or beautiful thing. The University of Hawaii recruiting in Florida will for sure get some players curious. They probably know a little of the good (2007) but not much of the bad unless they choose to watch UH on national tv over Florida, Michigan, ND, etc etc.

Couple the curiosity that players will have in this “new kid on the block” with the familiar and trusted face that Demarest has in the Miami-Dade/Tampa/Ft. Lauderdale area and it could turn out to be something beautiful.

Nothing is guaranteed obviously, but it’s kinda exciting.

    #156,

Yes Boise St. teams execute with perfection. That is what makes them good without having “studs” on the team.

I know its not what you or a lot of people want to hear but if that’s the situation, we can only hope that players start to execute flawlessly and/or we start to recruit what we need.

  160. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 3:14 pm

How many Boise States exist in college football?

How many mid-majors aspire to be just like them?

  162. madeinhawaii October 15, 2012 3:15 pm

So they’re saying they can’t get our guys to execute with perfection? Why is that? Why could Boise when they had 1 or 2 star athletes and not us? Certainly not the caliber of athletes.

  163. madeinhawaii October 15, 2012 3:18 pm

If the coaching staff have an attitude that our players aren’t good enough talent wise, then they (our players) never will. That’s pretty darn sad.

You could easily turn it around and ask “why can’t they do exactly what the coaches are telling them to do?” Is that unreasonable?

  165. Shoko October 15, 2012 3:23 pm

Well, from the days of Dirk Koetter to Dan Hawkins to Chris Petersen, Boise has had continuity when it came to changes in coaches. The philosophy was still there when each coach took over the reigns.

  166. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 3:24 pm

    161. normally you give a “reason” for something going bad if you’re an ADULT/POWER POSITION/COACH.

If you’re a subordinate/student/kid, you give an excuse.

    NO DIFFERENCE.

Broncos getting spanked! 24-0, 2nd quarter

  169. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 3:31 pm

I don’t know if its the players or the coaches or both. We could go back and forth and back and forth and go no where with it.

If everyone could do what Boise St. is doing, there would not be this constant reminder of BSU this, BSU that, BSU for President. They wouldn’t be so special. If we want what they got, we just have to offer up $10M/year to Chris Peterson to take over our program.

I just feel that its too early to be thinking our program won’t get better next year when our guys have more experience and we start to get more of the players he wants in. There may be a desire to build a foundation without as much importance on the winning aspect. Grow the tree, then pick the fruit.

  170. SteveM October 15, 2012 3:31 pm

RE: Talent level of the team

Hearing stuff like that disturbs me and should certainly disturb the players. Does not help the morale of the team to hear stuff like that: “gonna recruit better and replace you ASAP. Then we’ll get better”.

I don’t think any coach would say that.

  171. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 3:32 pm

    #166,

Obviously there is a difference in your mind if you just stated adults give reasons, children give excuses.

  177. PowderPuff October 15, 2012 3:41 pm

Well, THAT was the lunch for the naysayers to be at today. Demo sure came dressed ready for South Beach – pink shirt and orange slippers, and a whole truckload of energy. He was such a dynamic speaker, talking for a full 45 minutes before getting into the game clips. Loved how he really broke down plays and many times, went in slo-mo too. He showed one clip of the defense where he pointed to Fonua, M. Jackson and Williams and said, “FRESHMAN, FRESHMAN, FRESHMAN…!” He said in 2 years, hopefully….”Junior, Junior, Junior” like many of the opposing teams this year. He emphasized being results oriented and results driven.

Finally, what I took away from it was this is the time to support the program…when we are not doing so well. He had many great lines….my favorite was when he sees the bandwagon jumpers returning when the team is doing well, he said, “Yeah, I remember you when you looked at me like I had three heads.”

  178. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 3:42 pm

    #176,

Ok thanks, some people don’t see it as the same thing that’s why so I was just curious.

  179. Shoko October 15, 2012 3:42 pm

I think Chow came into the position thinking that he could develop the existing players well enough to be competitive in his first year. Now he’s finding out that’s a bigger task than he expected. It’s a rude introduction into coaching a mid-major school. And the way it sounds, it seems to be overwhelming for Chow and the other coaches.

  180. SteveM October 15, 2012 3:43 pm

IWWTHM — no, not you. This kind of talk has been floating around a few weeks now. It just gets louder and more painful the more we lose.

I believe it will get better too and I support the players who chose to be Warriors!

  181. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 3:44 pm

    PP,

Yes. And please clarify for us that Demo did not say that “They will recruit and replace ASAP” as if our kids were the plague.

I agree with PP. The doubters and naysayers should come to the Na Koa luncheon and listen to the coaches. I think sometimes their message gets lost in translation.

You can feel the passion of all of the coaches. The main thing they need is time to get their program in and support from us fans. If we’re going to criticize them, we should at least hear them out.

  191. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 4:02 pm

  196. jiminy cricket October 15, 2012 4:12 pm

We’ve had 6 games to evaluate UH. Excuses have been:

    1. New system; need a year to get used to it. New Mexico has been the consensus worse team in FBS over the last 3 years. Each season was 1-11. Bob Davie institutes a new system and they are 4-3 and beat UH at home. Instituting a new system helped NM.

    2. UH Players are bad bc recruiting over the past 3 years was bad and the current players do not fit the system. Maybe so, but after 3 straight 1-11 seasons, Bob Davie inherited “bad players” too for a different system. . You think NM had better recruits than UH over the last 3 years, one of which UH went to a bowl game? Yet Bob Davie comes to Hawaii and with his bad players that don’t fit in his new system wins for the first time on the road in 5 years.

    3. Defensive line has too many injuries. This is legitimate. Howver, the defensive scheme is bad. McMakin’s record at stopping running option teams, be it Nevada or Navy, etc. was outstanding. He knew how to play them. Not so with this coaching staff. In Nevada game, the defensive end came crashing down on the quarterback in the backfield on every play no matter whether he handed the ball off or not. If he went to the ball carrier even 50% of the time, he would have had about 4-5 tackles for loss. But that was not the scheme. Nevada’s players are not that much better than ours.

    4. June Jones institutes a brand new system in 1999 and sets the record for all time turnaround in NCAA history with a new system and holdover players from an 0-12 team. He is a pioneer in spreading the defenses out and now after 13 years, many college programs run a version of the spread.

People, it is the coaching, the impartation of confidence by the coaches into the players and the system. Norm Chow’s offense is way past its prime in the college ranks. His offenses were terrible for 3 years at UCLA with great athletes and was terrible at Tennessee at the NFL. Unless you are an SEC team or Notre Dame or USC with studs at every position, you cannot win or even compete running the pro set offense in college, especially at UH. Even though Von Appen had terrible records, his teams were more competitive than Chows, mainly bc he had a real good defensive coordinator in Don Lindsey. Von Appen also ran a version of the pro set offense.

Sorry, I am praying for June Jones return. He is the only one that can rebuild this program. McMackin was and Chow is only holding the position until JJ’s return.

  197. Shoko October 15, 2012 4:16 pm

Has there been a person that left a program as a head coach and returned to the same program as a head coach?

  198. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 4:20 pm

    John Robinson, USC

  199. GA Warrior October 15, 2012 4:20 pm

Last three years, New Mexico was 3-33, Hawaii 22-16, both with new coaches this year and I think that the excuse that Chow needs to get his players for his system is nothing more than an excuse. Bob Davie has been out of coaching for 10 years and yet he seems to be doing just fine implementing a system “without his players”. They had not won out of the state of New Mexico in 5 years and they came in there and beat the heck out of us. This is not a lack of talent issue people, it is coaching. You dont win 22 games in the last three years without talent and good players. These guys didnt all of the sudden forget how to play. I find it somewhat hypocritical that Chow is look into changing EVERYTHING but wont even consider changing the position that controls so much of the game. The game has passed him by and it he contines to be stubborn and unwilling to change to allow his players to have more success, then the results will be like his time at UCLA, Tennessee titans, and utah. Good luck next week boys

What amazes me is some “fans” ability to always dwell or point out every deficiency as if it does any good. All it does is worsen other people’s day and adds negativity to any bright lit room. Positivity can be infectious, negativity is just an infection…

Hate to watch the games with those guys. In 30 plus years supporting UH sports, regardless of the win/loss record, I have never found the need to direct negative comments to any of our sports programs at UH.

Those “fans” that have the need to do this lacks any tact or class in my book. To any who need some advice….take a deep breath, step away from the keyboard and stop making yourselves look like children who can’t logically deal with your emotions. Most adults have learned to develop that skill by the time they are in HS.

Just really bothers me that some guys don’t get it….5 games in and they spew nothing but noise. Hard to hear a bunch of “never been there’s” judge those that are trying to build a winner and have forgotten more in their careers then most think they know while playing Madden football with their friends. Either crap or get off the pot….the program don’t need that kind of “support”…..

Re #181, IWWTHM: nope, didn’t hear that. It was just amazing to see the kind of command Demo’s presence had in that room. Wow…and those who left at 1:30 (when he was still talking…heh heh!) really had to leave. No one else budged. Guess we got lucky with the bye week because he said, “I can talk all day (no, really?!? 🙂 ), and Coach gave us the day off so I don’t need to go back to work – you might, but I don’t.” HAHA!

He really did emphasize supporting the team and even likened a college coach’s tenure to that of a U.S. President….four years later, the sitting President has a record, and you can judge that. He opened by talking about his experiences at Rutgers whose program was pretty bad; now they’re up there with many players in the NFL such as Ray Rice and Kenny Britt.

First what I have been posting was/is directed to the spammer/trolls who have migrated here from other boards because they were either banned(sock puppets, content, etc) or not accepted by other boards because of their attitude. I have seen what they have tried to do on the other boards and do not want that to happen here.

In my opinion, there are two general groups of people who post. One group wants to support the players and coaches in a positive way. They are also critical but make logical post to support their opinions. The other group is looking for someone to blame. For some reason, the people in the “blame” group need to have someone/something to blame. I guess it makes them feel better. Not really the type of people you want to work with or depend on because they will be the first people to throw other team members under the bus. All of us have come in contact with people like this, these are the type of people we don’t hire or want as part of our team/organization because they are a cancer that will tear a team/organization apart. Their negativity kills any synergy/team spirit.

This group also includes people who live in the past, no meaningful change can happen if people can’t move forward. My motto is that we need to respect, understand and learn from the past to make it possible for us to be better moving forward.

There is nothing wrong with having a negative/positive opinion but it should be logical and not an ignorant whining one. Most people understand that emotion can take over and post can be made when this happens but when it continues over and over and over that is saying something about the poster. How can you take a person serious who does not even have control over themselves and keeps repeating the same rant over and over.

My advice to the negative posters who spam is to make a logical post of your opinion and try to leave emotion out of it, people will take your opinion more seriously. Remember in the real world, losing your temper/not having control of your emotions is not looked upon as being a strength.

The only thing we have control over is ourselves, when things are tough a persons true character is exposed….

I’m just as frustrated as Jiminy, SA and GA. A lot of what they’re saying has crossed my mind. It is within their rights to post their feelings in an open forum. I see their point but don’t agree with their multiple posts restating their feelings.

I’m just guessing. But it’s my take that Chow feels Graves would be the most divisive of all the other QBs. Think Tebow and the Jets. Chow must be believe he would have to custom build an O around Graves much like the Broncs did for Tebow. Doing so would set back his rebuilding plans for some possible short term gains.

Chow may be “old fashion” but he’s certainly not blind or deaf. Just by reading the papers or listening to sports calling ins he knows there’s a lot of disgruntled fans. He’s doing his best to shield individual players and coaches from the disgruntled by assuming responsibilty for what has transpired. He doesn’t make excuses or give reasons why just says he and HIS coaches got to do a better job.

I save my gripes and arm chairing for my friends who like to discuss sports. We can get into some lively discussions about UH FB, WVB, MBB, WBB.

    225. Yes, Ault did return after a stint as AD by firing Chris Tormey. His return to head coach was mostly pushed by boosters, tho.

Funny thing about his situation, if Ault didn’t retire and he continued to be head coach, he wouldn’t have been inducted into the College Hall of Fame because he wouldn’t have had enough wins as a active HC. When he retired as head coach, the requirements for a specified number of wins didn’t apply. Some have speculated that he took the AD position only to be accepted into the HOF, then planned to return as head coach by firing Tormey to be classified as one of three active head coaches in the HOF, which I think is BS.

Anyway, have a good night, folks!

A GREAT story involving our cheerleading squad.

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2012/10/15/CHEER_1015122754.aspx?path=cheer

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai’i cheerleaders were host to a special guest this past week. In conjunction with the Make-A-Wish Foundations of Arizona and Hawai’i, recipient Abbi Cleaver’s wish of meeting the UH cheer squad was granted.

Cleaver, a high school senior and cheer captain, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma a year-and-a-half ago. She responded ahead of schedule to chemotherapy and has already had a complete knee replacement. Currently, she in remission. When she was 11 years old, she watched the UH cheer team on television as they competed at the UCA Nationals and has been a huge UH fan ever since.

Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Cleaver and her parents celebrated her 18th birthday at the team’s practice early on Wednesday morning and the cheerleaders presented her with an official team shirt and birthday cupcakes.

“There are no words for my excitement,” exclaimed Cleaver. “They need a new word for how excited I am. I love this team and I’ve been following them for years. They’re my inspiration. And they’ve been my inspiration though the cancer process, to get better so I can come back and compete and be on their team with them. That’s my motivation, to be on the team with them.”

Usually, Make-A-Wish recipients who come to Hawai’i want to learn how to surf, or swim with the dolphins, or go to a lu’au. But Cleaver’s wish was different. “Abriel’s wish is unique,” explains Kalae Araujo, the local Make-A-Wish Foundation coordinator. “We don’t get many wishes like this. Her wish was specific in that she would like to meet the cheerleading squad at UH.”

During her five-day trip to the Islands, Cleaver also attended UH’s homecoming events—the women’s volleyball game, the men’s and women’s ‘Ohana Hoopfest on friday Night. On Saturday, she spent the day following the cheerleaders at the football game.

“It’s hard to keep the tears back to be honest. To see what’s she’s gone through and to see this happen with Make-A-Wish–it’s been awesome,” says her father, Robert Dixon. “It’s really truly unexplainable how well they’ve boosted her up and giving her this wish on her 18th birthday. You can’t beat that.”

Head cheerleading coach Mike Baker was humbled that Cleaver’s one wish was to meet his team. “It’s an honor to help fulfill somebody’s wish. And for that wish to be just to meet and hang out with the University of Hawai’i cheerleaders is just a huge honor.”

Cleaver summed up her time spent with the team, “It’s been such an amazing experience, I’m so honored that Make-A-Wish could do this for me. Hopefully I’ll get accepted to the school and I’ll be here next year and hopefully I’ll be trying out in two years.”

Too bad cheer leading isn’t considered a NCAA sport.. otherwise we’d have a couple more Division 1 NCAA national championships under our belt. …

  239. kapakahi October 15, 2012 6:52 pm

    #68,

Andrade hasn’t played this season. Wasn’t suited up for this past Saturday’s Homecoming game. Must be redshirting.

Meanwhile walk-on #93 Kaeo Alo (Kamalani’s older brother) suited up and even saw a few snaps of live action this past Saturday.

  240. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 7:05 pm

    Kevin,

I saw the M-A-W girl with the cheerleaders during the Warrior Walk. She looked so incredibly happy to be there right in the middle of the action. At the time I had to ask a friend who that little girl was. I was told the story and gotta admit was small kine choked up seeing her. Must have been a nice experience for the cheer team to have a warrior like her join them.

Hope she and everyone with cancer never gives up the fight.

    #240 Amen! Imua warrior

Peeps should pay attention and see

    how a program is built!

J J is learning how difficult the run n shoot

is when playing physical Texas teams!

We need to be physical and that calls for

recruiting the likes of such players!

I love watching this process in fold!

It’s going to be Awsome !!!

  243. kev-1 October 15, 2012 7:38 pm

As much as people despise Boise on this site, these have got to be the sickest black helmets I have ever seen. Come on Hawaii, get with the program.

  244. madeinhawaii October 15, 2012 7:41 pm

Gonna sit back and watch the recruiting…

Thing is.. that’s not really exciting..

That’s a part of football but not real football

The real stuff is hard to swallow right now…

Chow will have to do better than 50% in blue chipper type players…

    Anything less won’t do…

There won’t be all that many schollies to offer this year…

So, leaving any on the table going into summer will be a huge waste…

  245. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 7:49 pm

    243. i agree, even the uniforms are bad zzzz. BSU moving forward, we moving backwards.

  246. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 7:51 pm

DUMP UA, GO BACK TO NIKE.

  247. Bleed Green and White October 15, 2012 7:53 pm

    – Like most everybody else on this blog, I, too, love to play Monday Morning Quarterback. However, to think I know more than any of the coaches at UH, well, that would be rather irresponsible of me.

I can have my opinion, no question, but without being at every practice and every team meeting, it would be grossly irresponsible of me to think I did know more than the coaching staff.

    – With the Warriors at 1-5, 0-3 in the Big West….As a fan, am I happy with that?

    Absolutely not!

Fact is, team has looked horrible at times. There have been a couple of instances that give us hope, but for the most part it has been sub-par.

    – Sean Schroeder, I continue to be baffled that so many wanna pull the plug on him. I really don’t get that.

I get the fact that Norm had to break down the entire team to implement all of his philosophy’s. Again, I get that.

  248. el burro sabio October 15, 2012 7:56 pm

MIH, I think Chow is planning to recruit 25. There are only 14 seniors on scholarship, which means…. I’d rather not say it.

  249. Dino October 15, 2012 8:00 pm

196, yes, coach JJ set the standards and levels that we aspire to get back to. as a disciple of coach Tomey, who succesfully ran a pro set offense in back in the day, coach JJ took us to another level. not sure if JJ would ever come back to coach, but, JJ’s disciple, coach Rolo, wouldn’t be a bad idea. in the meantime, i look forward to coach Chow succeeding, and seeing if he can surpass the achievements of coach Tomey running the similar pro style offense.

  250. kev-1 October 15, 2012 8:02 pm

I think uniform mistake for UH was taking the novelty out of the black uniforms by turning into their permanent ones. People get excited over something different. UH was among the first to go black. We liked it too much, and ended up ONLY wearing black. Now other schools are on board with black special occasion. What is our special occasion uniform now? No moa.

  251. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 8:06 pm

our wounded warrior uniforms missed the boat IMO, no school colors in it except white.

  252. kev-1 October 15, 2012 8:08 pm

Nah, I actually like the WW unis. They’re different. And how often do we get to see the Warriors in red, white, and blue?

I was hoping for a green camouflage look, since our colors are green, though.

  256. kev-1 October 15, 2012 8:21 pm

Okay, I know I said this yesterday, but I have to say something again after reading ST’s article today about re-evaluating everything. It was mentioned that even the haka will be evaluated – to do something about the slow starts I assume.

If you can read in yell, do so now . . . NO, not the haka! That is not what is causing your slow start. How could you consider getting rid of the ONE pregrame activity that actually looks like it pumps up your players? Not to mention many of the fans (notice I said many, as I know there are those that can’t stand the haka already). Is the haka seriously being considered for removal instead of the slow, walking down the aisle at a wedding pace entrance out of the tunnel?

Let your players burst out onto the field like rabid dogs. Don’t make them temper their excitement just before kick off. It doesn’t make sense to me.

  257. SAWARRIOR October 15, 2012 8:27 pm

    256. yeah, that sloooow walk into the stadium is ridiculous, IMO.

  258. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 8:30 pm

    kev-1,

I guess once they went black, they didn’t want to go back.

  259. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 8:32 pm

    #248 burro,

The coaches are planning on having open scholarships in the “high-teens”. 17/18/19.

  260. Derek October 15, 2012 8:37 pm

Nike uniforms are the best, as well as the shoes, accesories, etc. I really like those black unis for the Broncos, and that black helmet is menacing. UNLV better watch out this Saturday. It’s homecoming too.

I figure that Chow has to recruit at least 5 to 6 defensive linemen and with a couple of them to say that if they come on board they will have a good chance to start right away and will be in the rotation, even as freshmen, and even junior college players. The carrot has to be that the player knows that when in comes in he will play right away. As it is right now, the cupboard is bare on the defensive line. We need size, speed, strength, and of course talent. It also would be nice to have a couple of pass rushers.

I see Taylor Graham being the QB starter next year, but the QB future is Aaron Zwahlen. Zwahlen has the arm and he has the atheltic ability and he has speed. Schroeder can’t run and his passes are so slow it begs to be intercepted. One throw last Saturday should have been a pick six, but the NM DB couldn’t hang on to the ball, right in his hands.

  261. kev-1 October 15, 2012 8:43 pm

    258 . . . lol

260 . . . Zwahlen’s first year back from his mission will be after Graham’s second (his final). Is he good enough to start as a freshmen right off his mission?

  267. al October 15, 2012 9:49 pm

i think the haka should be performed in front of the student section.

at least two old time tsaikos will enjoy it.

  268. Will-I-Am October 15, 2012 9:57 pm

    This is pretty sweet!

    I love the black helmet.

    http://www.broncosports.com/SplashPage.dbml?SPLASH_AD_ID=644354

  269. al October 15, 2012 9:58 pm

i don’t think that the haka will go away. just relocate.

  270. al October 15, 2012 10:01 pm

i’d really like to hear the team assemble at the field entrance and let out a collective blood curdling yell.

then see the team sprint out of the smoking helmet or a volcano with some whoops, cheeehoo’s, grunts, and other hype.

upon sprinting near the north end zone to where the band and the student section are circle the area two or three times so that all of the team encircles the head coach.

then come together in a huddle and then let out another blood curdler and sprint out in the haka lineup. perform the haka and run to the sideline to prepare for the battle.

by then the adrenaline will be flying not only amongst the team but in the stands.

(i’ll bet even old japanese lady long time season ticket holder will stand up and cheer her butt off no matter who is the quarterback.)

  271. cocobean October 15, 2012 10:03 pm

Al. I agree where the haka should be performed. Energize the students they in turn can be a catalyst to energize the crowd and the team.

In most sporting venues the student section is the loudest.

  272. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 10:03 pm

    al,

there might be more to your suggestion. come out holding hands to Hawaii ’78 to the student section, do the haka, get all worked up, the game begins.

the way we have it now, we do the haka, get all jazzed up, hold hands and walk to the bench with ’78, game begins.

There’s a more natural flow/progression of energy if we did in front of the students and off course the students would appreciate it a lot.

  273. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:03 pm

    It’s been awhile….

Try explain the significance of the Ha’a to an athletic endeavor again?

  274. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:05 pm

…and how will Florida high schoolers be impressed by it?

  275. al October 15, 2012 10:08 pm

…and of course for selfish reasons i suggest this. since, i am in section “n” i will at least be a lot closer to the haka performance. as it is, i am as far away as possible from it.

  276. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 10:09 pm

We have to incorporate fire into the haka. A lot of fire. That would impress folks from Florida to Fagaloa.

The 2nd and 3rd degree burns may be a problem though.

  277. al October 15, 2012 10:10 pm

d1…just watching tony grimes do the haka is inspiration enough.

if one did not know any better they’d certainly think that he is a polynesian.

  278. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:18 pm

    Is it inspirational?

From whence does the inspiration come?

    Is it cultural? Historical?

I forget. What is the deal?

  279. al October 15, 2012 10:21 pm

…speaking of floridians. marrell jackson is just slowly earning more minutes as he continues to show up each game. i believe he started this past game.

he ended with 9 solo tackles and one assist for a team high of 10.

  280. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:21 pm

Has it helped Hawaii win more games?

What is the record when doing the Ha’a?

  281. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:23 pm

Does it help recruit more/better players?

Are there any quotes that can be cited by current or former players stating it was influential in his decision to come here?

  282. al October 15, 2012 10:23 pm

mike edwards has now been credited with 10 pass breakups. 10 is a huge number and one would be elated with that many for a whole year or career.

  283. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 10:23 pm

    al,

He is only 17 right?…Imagine the damage he could do in a couple years.

  284. al October 15, 2012 10:23 pm

    haka is better than ha’a.

  285. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:24 pm

Is it included in the play book?

  286. al October 15, 2012 10:25 pm

not sure what his age is.

  287. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:26 pm

    What makes the Haka better?

Does it produce better results for the football team than the Ha’a?

  288. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 10:27 pm

The haka does seem energize the fans. That is a good thing.

  289. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:28 pm

Does the Haka attract better football players than the Ha’a?

I’m sure I knew at one time…can someone remind me?

  290. cocobean October 15, 2012 10:29 pm

D1. HI has virtually no football traditions. I’m not into the Haka or Ha’a myself but it does seem to fire people up.

To answer your question. No it hasn’t helped us win more games neither has the new Warrior Walk. It’s more for the fans. Part of the entertainment value of attending.

  291. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:29 pm

If the fans do the Haka would it energize the team?

  292. d1shima October 15, 2012 10:30 pm

    Entertainment?

  293. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 15, 2012 10:31 pm

    #291,

I bet it would. But some of the people in front of me consider it a victory to climb up the stairs to their seats.

Maybe the students section should learn the haka. That would be something.

  294. kev-1 October 15, 2012 10:39 pm

d1 . . . the haka, ha’a, or whatever else you want to call it is not for winning more games. It is not for recruiting purposes. It is not to produce better results. It is not in the play book.

It is inspirational. It is motivating. Researched evidence is not necessary. Look at how the fans get pumped when they see the team do it. Look at the faces of the players when they are doing it and tell me that most of them aren’t getting fired up. It is a chicken skin moment that is something special that the players can share with their fans.

Yes, there are fans that don’t like it and think it is a waste of time. But so are many other things. Yes, there are even players that probably think it is stupid. But many other things are stupid too.

To me, it just doesn’t hurt. Especially if the team likes it. And from what I understand, when potentially ending it has arisen before, it was the players that saved it.

  295. AlaWai October 15, 2012 10:40 pm

The Haka or Ha`a is an ancestral war cry.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka

The New Zealand All Blacks Rugby team performed it before matches at the Rugby World Cup in 1987. http://goaustralia.about.com/od/maoriculture/f/haka.htm

It is said to have its origins back to 1810.

I was taught it in 1967.

Kahuku High school may have been the first to use it and BYU performed it in , however the University of Hawai`i has become known for it.

  296. AlaWai October 15, 2012 10:40 pm

BYU performed it in 2005. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka_performed_by_non-New_Zealand_sports_teams

  304. cocobean October 15, 2012 10:52 pm

D1. Like I said I’m not into it myself. But if people like it why rain on their parade.

If you were a 10-12 year old kid attending games from the Mack era or from whenever the team started performing to you it would be part of the openning tradition.

I don’t know when singing/playing Hawai’i Pono’i at UH sporting events began but now part of UH athletic tradition. It’s something fans can identify with. I remember when UH played UCLA for the NC in MVB. The several thousand fans spontaneous broke into Hawai’i Pono’i after the National Anthem was played.

D1. Again it’s for the fans. Were you in NO in 2008?

WE BELIEVE IN YOU COACH CHOW!!!!!!!!

  320. Lopaka43 October 16, 2012 1:09 am

    Aloha, Tsaikos!

Just have to weigh in after reading everything since Saturday.

We do not have to divide the Tsaikos into supporters and others.

It is okay to have opinions about what the Coach should be doing different, even if you haven’t coached at Norm Chow’s level. It is what fans do. They moan about the choices, the what might have been, the mistakes because they care and they want the team to do better.

And you “supporters” may be right that Coach Chow’s teams will do better in the future … when they have learned the new system … when they have the players needed by the new system… when the quarterbacks who are waiting in the wings play … etc.

But you did not help your case before the season started when the blog was filled with the rosy predictions of how well Coach Chow was going to do with his new disciplinary system … with the wonderful recruiting job he did on such short notice … etc.

I frankly was a doubter and have a “show me” attitude for those who thought abandoning the run and shoot for the pro set was the way to go. I remember Dick Tomey’s boring, grind it out until the fourth quarter, and steal a win style, and it never took us to the levels that June Jones took us or even Bob Wagner took us.

As Liz Kauai has said before, I miss the run and shoot when it seemed that the magic was always possible, and we could always come roaring back.

And I agree with Pauoa Boy and others who would like somebody other than Schroeder to get some time, if only to show us that the cupboard is bare. I don’t believe Schroeder would ever have started for Dick Tomey, Bob Wagner, June Jones, or Mack. I beieve he is a tough kid who is trying to do his best, but many of the throws he made Saturday were way off target or extremely risky.

It is hard to believe that a school which lead the nation in passing yardage just a few years ago does not have a quarterback who can get the ball out faster and more on target, or receivers who can consistently get open, make the catch, and get YAC.

Still a believer in UH sports, but want to see progress that gives hope for the future.

  321. maddog50 October 16, 2012 1:55 am

How about some audible opportunities…..quarterback keep would have gotten first down. Also since we have been burned on the screen pass so many times….how bout one ourselves. Draws and screens keep the D off balance….the other night there were at least 3 times the alignment called for draw…..did not get it….oh well—

    October 16th, 2012 at 1:09 am

    Aloha, Tsaikos!

    . . .

Still a believer in UH sports, but want to see progress that gives hope for the future.

Is a Lopaka43 willing to give a year or two to Coach Chow, this being his first season as UH football coach? And this being his first head coaching job? Are you willing to say that you only think your direction for the team, overall (yes, the nuts and bolts, the routine, boring stuff that you DON’T see the coaching staff do) rivals that of Chow’s? If “yes” to that last question, then WHY didn’t you apply for UH head football coach when the job was advertised?

You folks want. You must be able to give. (and that goes beyond every Saturday or every other Saturday during football season?)

Who is sleeping yet? (a Grease is not referring to you vampires)

Go to sleep already, whoever is up You are getting . . . very sleepy . . .

i think SS is being told not to run. and the thing is….IF this is true, do you think chow or shroeder can tell the media that the QB will not run it??? can you imagine what info that would be for opponents? so of course they cant say it, but i do think, i really do think SS is being told not to take off, and let the play develop. chow gets the most info from plays that were given a chance to develop…not plays where the QB ran. remember…shroeder needs to see it develop, all the QBs need to see it develop on tape–so i think this is just one of those things to make the team better in the long run-SS has to sit and not run.

shroeder is a smart kid and common sense for all of us including him would be to tuck it and run, but he doesnt…so there has to be a reason…and i think its because chow tells him not to.

the biggest mistake for this year in my opinion is that everyone knows graham will be the QB next year. maybe…maybe that has impacted the team a bit in some negative way? how do you follow a “temporary leader?”

Schroeder was running some in the first few games, I think. Some were set running plays after faking to a back. But he wasn’t going too far most of the time. Looked like some old UCLA QB plays .

Schroeder seems to be flexible when he is hit, bending but not breaking. Hope he can stay relatively healthy.
