Midway point
It’s halftime in the 2012 season, and like most halftimes this season, the Warriors have a lot to overcome.
Slow starts. Self-inflictd mistakes. Third-down breakdowns, on both sides. Stopping an opponent’s running game. Tackling a running quarterback. Did we mention self-inflicted mistakes?
Well, at least nobody is complaining about clock management, extra-point attempts or third-quarter blahs this year.
The thing about growing pains is there is pain.
Still, there have been bright spots, such as:
MVP — The two fumbled kickoff returns were hurtful, but Mike Edwards is having a solid season as a corner, returner and leader. His best play: soaring to break up a fourth-down pass to a seemingly wide-open New Mexico receiver.
Best Newcomer (offense) — Center Ben Clarke is going to be a star.
Best Newcomer (defense) — Benny Fonua is doing what a middle linebacker is supposed to be doing: Going forward. Hmm. What’s that phrase in Hawaiian?
Most inspirational (offense) — Too often it is forgotten that Billy Ray Stutzmann still has screws in his left hand and, if his recovery was at the original six-week window, he shouldn’t be on the field until the Colorado State game.
Most inspirational (defense) — Imagine moving a basketball team’s best perimeter player into the post. That’s what happens every time Beau Yap is used at defensive tackle against much-heftier blockers.
Most improved (offense) — John Lister was always a tough runner. Now he’s a tough runner in meaningful situations.
Most improved (defense) — What the workmanlike play Charles Clay showed on special teams has transcended to defense.
Biggest loss (offense) — Joey Iosefa can do it all — run, block, catch, throw. The only thing that can stop him is that fracture in his right foot.
Biggest loss (defense) — Moses Samia. As the old song goes: “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”
Best sampling — Using BJ Penn’s intro music.
Worst sampling — Using a slogan associated with a specific high school.

In short, we can have the perfect map for attack and defense but not have the personnel to handle the same?

A Grease ~ We were served Huli-Huli Chicken during the ball game last nite. I must admit, I felt a bit uncomfortable about the fact that it had Chicken Grease dripping from it as it came off the spit. All that was missing was the Sean Connery voice from the server along with the bottle of Dos Equis.

Hey ST, were there any serious injuries during the game? It looked like Will Gregory might have gotten hurt, and Leroy Lutu appeared to aggravate his sprained shoulder.
Warriors are still a work in progress. We saw a preview of things to come from a young but hungry team. Defense can step it up against any kind of scheme. Offense still learning the system, but showing moments of brilliance. I saw coaches teaching on the Mauka sideline throughout the game. Team being held together by duct tape and unity. Players being used in unfamiliar positions and making mistakes born of anxious energy. We may not have a MW win but we’ll have success with a few good recruits and continually learning this new system. One snap clear. One game clear. I like the IMUA on the jersey’s. Imua Warriors, Imua!

One can see that things could be different in a positive light. They are still going uphill on the learning curve, may be physical (as Al pointed out), could be the complexity of the schemes (as coaches have pointed out) in trying the change a mindset from one philosophy to another.
I like the play of the new ones. They seem to get it quicker, even when they make mistakes. Could be that they come in without the other latent schooling that the players from the previous coaching staff may have instilled.
I cannot see what the coaches see in Grimes, sorry. That man tackles like he does not want to get his uniform dirty. I believe Nequan could be a better fit there. Yes, he makes mistakes but his tackling form and aggressiveness in that area is a lot more to be desired.
Too many drops, Qback still stares down his primary receiver (Colt also did that when he first got started.) I guess it takes more real time game time experience to get away from that. We run block a lot better than we’ve done in the past, but the pass blocking has been spotty, at best.
This game actually got interesting to watch. Someone said that the coaches were too scripted. I don’t know, going for it on 4th and throwing. Running on 2nd and long to get yardage seem to be timely when doing it (even when that second attempt at the 4th and yard was a bit botched. I though Qback may have had a shot at getting it on a quick count sneak as there was no one in the middle when he approached the line, but what do I know).
An improvement. A “C”, would have been worse as that ongoing 1st quarter funk is just troublesome. Coming back showed that good things could come.
I agree with Al on the statements from the previous posts. He understands the complexity of change: it not only mental, it’s physical. Those other things people like with the 4 wide, etc,, I believe will come when the team has the new basic, fundamentals of this new staff.

I really liked how Benny Fonua handle himself during the game. Even from up in my nosebleed seats, I could see him going to his teammates between plays, offering encouragement and helping with their positioning just before the snap. He didn’t look like a true freshman out there.

Observations from a lurker. I really miss the names on the uniforms so I can tell who made the play. Robert K. is no help. He makes me wish for the good old days when Papa L. was trying to sound intelligent. Fans need to know who specifically they are cheering for to develop a following for these young Warriors.
#25 kev-1, the Warriors uniforms had “IMUA” on their jerseys, where their name would normally be. Some folks wondered if they were all relatives of the same large Hawaiian family-the Imua family. It was a sight to see: Imua back to pass, pass complete to Imua. Tackle by Imua. And the holder is Imua, the kick by Imua…..You get the picture.

Some people, like myself, have complaints but still have faith. No fan likes it when their team loses, and frustration ensues. I may complain sometimes, but I will never give up on the team, nor have I given up on Chow, yet.

Fonua is just one of the reasons why the future holds much promise. There are LOTS of good young players on our current roster.
gmahoney . . . oh, that. I didn’t mind the “Imua” on the unis. It was rather large though. About twice as large as a name would have been printed on a jersey. I wouldn’t mind continuing something like that. I would include other Hawaiian words too. Ikaika, mana, ho’ohanohano, etc.
I’m tempering my enthusiasm regarding the so called improvements. Got to remember who we just played against and where we played them. We were the HOME team. Location wise we had the edge. NM was 3-3 coming in. They had beated an FCS team and NMSU and Texas State, and loss to Texas Tech, Boise and Texas. They are a so-so team. At the start of this season I thought this would be one of our “wins”.
Does anyone else think Chow should change the slow walk out of the tunnel to something that will allow the players to get more pumped up? I always like when a team waits in the tunnel like dogs on a leash with the coach standing in front of them staring. And then lets em loose and they go sprinting out, fired up.
It just seems like the energy level is so low at the start of the game, with the exception of the haka of course. But the slow walk seems a bit tempering.

On the former story on this blog, someone asked if Graves was MIA.
It is rule that you can’t play football without a uniform. When unis are being issued and a player shows up to get his and is told you are not suiting up, what do you do? You go sit in the stands.
Kevin -1 absolutely. Why anyone would want to slow walk onto a battle field baffles me? Slow walk to the 1st tee? Yes. Marching band? Yes! As much energy and emotion football demands, try not to walk into the field, you’re gonna get runned over if you’re not prepared.
Whoa. Arlen Spector. Was on the Warren Commission, no? Never mind waiting ’til 2050, or whenever, to get the straight on the JFK assassination. This guy needed to understand, at the turn of the century at least, that the world easily became one that “could handle” the proverbial truth.

That is disappointing. I’m sure he knows, but please relay to David that he has supporters among Hawaiin fans, and for him to keep his head up. As much as I would love for him to play as a Warrior, there is obviously something that is not meshing well with this coaching staff. Should he choose to go elsewhere, I, like many others will still be a fan and root for his success.

Personally, hate that Imua look. If you gotta put Imua on the backs of jerseys to motivate/inspire, you got much bigger problems than a word on the back can solve. If you gonna put something, put their name.

I’ve been thinking (and sometimes voicing) that the time for the Haka/Ha’a may have come and gone. There seems to be a considerable amount of time and effort being put into staging and theatrics in the pre-game that may be getting distracting to mental preparation.

I love CFB in general for the entertainment value…Hawaii football in particular because of the emotional involvement.
Last night’s game held more entertainment value than previous outings.
I wanna feel like we always “get chance” and get rewarded more often than not and can, at the very least, leave feeling like next time going be better.

I really feel for Graves and his family. I have a feeling he’s going to transfer somewhere with a read option offense and kill our defense next year…
I still don’t understand why we aren’t using Graves as a scout QB for all of these read option teams…
This week SDSU beat Colorado State 38-14, versus 52-14 against Hawaii last week. We play away at Colorado State in two weeks. Hope the commutative property of mathematics does no apply here. In addition to being an away game, Fort Collins is about 1 mile above sea level. This should be a good game to judge improvement in the Warrior coaching and execution.
I enjoyed the sing along to some of IZ’ favorite hits. I also enjoy those mini doughnuts. The tuba dancers were funny. The field was nice and green. Now, if we get the football thing up to par with the mini doughnuts and the tuba dancers it would be poifect.
If you willing to wait for dem mini donuts, you can handle waiting for the team….

I like the football concept Fast Dad, Slow Dad. “Fast Dad” hurry ups, trades 3 good plays ( homes) for a first down, (hotels) Repeats until a touchdown is a scored. “Slow Dad” takes his time, runs 3 good plays and punts for field position. Repeats this process until the time runs out and the game is pau. ..or the season.

No need to analyze the team to death. We suck. It starts and ends with the coaches. They truly suck. The players are not to blame. Chow sucks most. I think that covers it.

I thought that was Graves sitting in the stands…I know Coach Chow wanted to cut down the amount of people on the sidelines maybe this has to do with why Graves wasn’t allowed to suit up…I’m guess Coach has a certain number of players for each position that are allowed to suit up maybe he’s keeping the numbers close to that of a travel squad # that way he can manage with the same amount of players on the road…very different from Mack where everyone pretty much dressed for home games…
It’s funny that in football if we are doing poorly some say its only the coaches fault.
Students some of whom are football players may do poorly in class but the professor/teachers are rarely if ever blamed.

That was immensely hilarious. A Grease has known Psy’s music from a while back (check out his Champion on Youtube, say. A Psy uses a very, very familiar theme song from a popular Eddie Murphy film and Champion is the better Psy tune vs. Gangnam Style). It is my understanding that no player can transfer without his coach releasing him (for the player’s protection, the release better be in writing). It is my understanding that if a player on his own contacted a school to try to transfer without the coach’s release, the coach could say the player simply quit and, thus, the coach (who wants his scholarship) can take it away.
As a form of punishment, some coaches have been known to withhold their release to transfer until it is too late for the player to transfer.
Regarding Graves.
Years ago I coached and had a system. The kids that played for me really understood what we wanted to do so much so that, they would change defensive and offensive plays as they saw the flow. I only called timeouts when I sensed momentum shifts but not to change strategy.
We were very successful. So much so that HS folks came to watch and “scout” players. There was a young man who was just a leaderof the team. He had a way with teammates and could see game shifts like no other, in my system.
He went to HS and was supposed to be a starter. He would suggest to the coaches when they ran similar schemes that “maybe” this way would get the team to where he thought the coach wanted the team to be. The young man was rebuffed and soon found he could not fit and went on to be a spectator and student.
The team replaced him and they won.
Whose fault was this?
I don’t beleive that there is fault anywhere. The young man knew that there was a philosophical difference in coaching styles that did not allow for his particular way of playing the game. The coach did not see the players intent messing with his, got someone who did and found success.
The young man did well as a student, cheered the team and as I said, the coach won. I told the young man that it is just the way of the world with leadership. People see things differently and you are not to be blamed nor the coach for that difference. That’s life.
F. Baumgarter’s fall from 24+ miles was slick to watch. Looked like he wassed out for a bit on the way down or he was doing some pretty awesome aerial tricks — flips, twists, and turns all while awkwardly flailing his arms and legs.
I think he broke the sound barrior during his free fall, too.
Anyway, glad he survived. Otherwise that would have been quite the little crater.

Remember: Graves was selected by the team to be a team captain. That team vote was rescinded by Coach Chow and he appointed Schroeder to be a team captain. Starting to get the picture?

To David Graves,
keep on trying to help the team. You are on scholarship, so get your degree with a free education, compliments of the UH football team. If you don’t have playing time here, do you think you will make it in the NFL? I’m not bashing you on your play, but once you get your degree, no one can take it away from you. After your playing career is over and you still love the game, maybe you can coach. Through your experiences here, you will become a better person or even coach if you desire, taking both the positives and negatives with you for the rest of your life. Of all the football players in college, a very small percentage make it to the professional ranks. I’m not just talking about the NFL, but the other professional leagues as well. Players get serious injuries in those less publicized leagues too. Without a degree, what do they do after their career is over? Learn as much as you can while your school is paying for it. Gook luck to you in whatever happens in your future.

graves is on pace to grad so can xfer anywhere he wants. just needs his release. I’m sure it would b tough to leave his teammates tho. it’s not about playing professionally
NO EXCUSES for losing by over 3 tds every game but last night they fought back to make it a game that is ALL I wanted and im sure the fans in hawaii want is to play close or play to win. We ALL understand NEW SYSTEM, New COACH, A LOT OF YOUTH, But those are no excuses to be getting blown out all the time. I wont say play harder because they are playing hard but they need to play better. Mike Edwards is the bright star of this season but i feel bad for the seniors this year. We HAVE TALENT they just need to play to there potential espically on Defense I thought the strength of the defense was our front

Sean S. maybe the best quarter back we have now, but hopefully next year with graham, the situation will improve. no knock on Sean, but he takes too long to throw (no quick release) and average arm strength. this is one reason he has to stare down the receiver, no quick release and no arm strength. but he sure is one tough guy, keeps coming up after been knocked down many times. don’t know if the back-ups can do any better, but feel sorry for graves. he is one great guy.

A very well said message to David and other young men who go to college on a football scholarship. These young men live and breathe football, they want to play, they love their teammates and their school. This experience can happen only once in a lifetime… and when it is taken from you, the disappointment is great. But they do know there is life after college ball and more than not, it is not in the NFL. They know that their college education and degree is their future.
#93. Yes, Graves is on pace scholastically. Since arriving at UH, in addition to regular classes he has been taking summer classes. No problems with grades; he has declared his major and minor. He wants to stay at UH; he wants to remain on the team; he wants to play. He has said he will play any position to which he is assigned. He comes to practice to practice; he comes to the games ready to play.

If David graduates this December and finds another school that offers a graduate degree that is not offered at UH, he may transfer to another school without sitting. Similar situation to Schroeder coming to UH.
Regarding size and physicality, if you looked at Air Force’s lineman, none of them weigh more than 260 pounds.
Harbaugh should take out Smith and leave in Kaepernick already. At least Kap’s not throwing interceptions like it was Christmas.

#110 the problem is the qb’s terrible feet, he moves like a 1yr baby thats just starting to walk. more success on offense would come with a change at qb. there is no way graves or higgins would suck as much as 19. why does the qb keep throwing the ball as far as he can which is out of reach of the receiver, what the hell do they do at practice, chow’s offensive philosophy seems to be the same as fred von appen. highly respected coach with nfl credentials, but has no clue how to win without nfl caliber players. this years struggles will be repeated in 2014. next year they got graham.

Because he has been taking summer classes as well as regular classes at UH, Graves is on track to graduate in December (which is “early”). He plans to not skip a beat; he plans to continue his schooling at UH and be on the Warrior team. Football-wise, he is a junior and has another year of eligibility to play under his scholarship.
I have a very difficult time believing that David Graves cannot run this offense as good, if not better than as Sean Schroeder.

As bad as we look right now, future does look bright with guys like Nequan, Marrell, Fonua, Garcia-Williams, and KVA getting solid Pt. Should be no excuses about leadership in a couple years. Now we need to recruit some beef up front.

To all you naysayers and armchair qb’s, just shaddup already. I see potential in this team definitely not this year but when Chow gets his players then this team will really be what we all hoped for but its going to take time……Brian Kelly at Notre Dame took him 3 years before he could get the players into his system….his first three yrs. he took a lot of criticism from fans and news media alike and even from players but they all believed and persevered and the results are an unbeaten season so far….so give it time. I remember distinctly at the end of the last football season even the local news media was saying that the cupboard would be bare and Chow was left with nothing, to speak of, when he came in as the new HC chg. the culture and inserting a new system. Once he recruits his type of players then I WOULD EXPECT a difference in the team’s makeup and gamemanship. Those of you saying he should chg. the QB…just shaddup….the offensive line is inexperienced with 2 freshman and 2 sophmores and if any of you have played the game watch the line try and hold their own against the opponent defensive line and you will see the inexperience as SS is constantly being pressured and getting hits but his resiliency has earned the respect of his teammates…..like I said and Chow has repeated many times, “our time will come.” Stop with your sarcastic and stupid and negative comments. Be a supporter and eventually you will be rewarded .

The biggest issue with Chow right now is how much he stresses how important running the football is. Yet, past 2 weeks, I don’t recall running the football much at all until we got down 3 scores.
If there is any question I would like to ask, that would be it. We have done a pretty good job running the ball. I don’t see why we don’t run early while game is close. Those quick 3 and outs passing just effects our offensive rhythm and gets our D tired.

I have seen some good adjustments on offense by Coach Chow during halftime that led to the offense having some good drives to start the 3rd quarter, so I expect this stat to get better with a recruiting class or two for this system and greater familiarity of the current players in this system.

I *love* this story about how a high school running back walked out of bounds at the 1-yard line instead of scoring on a 53-yard run so that a freshman (whose father had unexpectedly died from a sudden stroke 2 days earlier) could “honor his father” by scoring a TD. The refs had no idea what was going on and said that the RB had scored a TD…this might have been the first time that players actually argued with the refs by saying that they *didn’t* score! The freshman had no idea what was going on. The freshman scored a TD on his first ever running attempt and poured his emotion out on Twitter after the game, writing: “Looking straight up into the sky after scoring my first varsity touchdown…i know the old man was watching! love and miss you so much daddy.”

I would be *very* jealous to think about the food I was missing at the Tsaiko-gate, especially stuff from my Mom and Dad…if I hadn’t been in Vegas this weekend eating at all of the favorite places for my family.

I bet that almost nobody knew that UH had a BCS ranking. I have been checking that stuff ever since 2007, when there was a real chance that UH could have gone undefeated but still not made a BCS game because the SOS was too low. UH needed 4 teams to lose late in the season (if I remember correctly, 3 of them were favorites in those games) to get a high enough ranking to get the ranking required.
I posted UH’s BCS ranking each week in 2007…but haven’t been doing that in later seasons because it hasn’t been good news. You just gave me an excuse to post it once again, but I don’t think I’ll be updating that post each week until at least next season.
The BCS ranking only matters until next season ends. After that they will go to a committee that will pick who they want…and that committee will probably be made up of reps from the Big10, Big 12, SEC, and Pac-12…

What you are not getting is the fact that most of us aren’t expecting miracles, we know there will be growing pains. Screw the whole system BS, not the right players, and bad recruiting, and whatever else excuse there is. We have talent and players who should not be getting beat as bad as they are. The team has not shown much improvement if at all on either side of the ball since the beginning of the season. I mean the caliber of teams we’ve faced so far isn’t the upper echelon of college football aside from maybe USC. Still we don’t expect a perfect season but at least a respectable showing on the field and improvements from week to week. I’ve maybe seen a series or two on offense were they actually moved the ball well each game if that. The rest of the time has been atrocious to watch. No consistency all around. SS respect for being tough is overrated. He’s not the only person not playing well but he does have the ball in his hands every down and despite other deficiencies can move the ball on his own by passing, scrambling,etc…no other player has that ability but the QB. Regardless the defense still hasn’t figured out how to stop the run at all. The secondary is doing okay in pass coverage but they are on the field so long they are getting gassed. The offense not being able to move the ball and control the clock is causing the defense to remain on the field too long and get fatigued. I’m not making excuses but when they are tired and getting beat up, they start making bonehead plays.
In any case I can’t stand when the Coach says he doesn’t have an answer to what’s going on. I may not be right but it just feels like the coaches are trying to force the players to adapt to what they want vice the coaches adapting to the players they have. It may be the players are trying too hard to do what’s right yet in reality its not allowing them to just play to their abilities and go all out the way they know how. I don’t know but to me it seems like on defense the players are not in sync to what’s happening. Lots of mistakes and miscues and lack of execution. Coach keeps preaching simplify but how about simplifying the play calling. Frikk every team has shown run, run, run yet we still aren’t stopping them. Coach wanted to implement an attacking defense to make the opposing offense do what they don’t want to, yet everyone we’ve played so far has done just the opposite by attacking us with the run time and again. It’s getting ridiculous already the yards we’ve given up so far.

That is a very good summation of many fans’ frustrations. I do think we have on par athletes able to compete, at least against the competition we have faced. So that excuse, you are correct, is garbage. What worries me is the inability to make the adjustments to fix the defense when you know exactly what an opponent will do. Against NM, we knew what was coming and still allowed a ridiculous amount of yards rushing by both RBs and QBs.
I understand that the defensive front is missing its true tackles, but it is not only the interior of the line where we are getting burned. We are getting burned inside and outside. How many times is a QB gonna have to light you up for 100+ yards rushing before you put a spy on the QB?
YES. The defense is on the field FAR too long in order to make plays consistently, so that needs to be considered as well.
PB #170 . . . you are exactly right. Coach has even said that they are asking players to do things they can’t do. As a fan, that is hard to take. But remember, these are going to be the same players we have next year, with the exception of any possible additions, and they have to learn the system some time, right?

For us it’s “put so and so” in. Solve the problem. Well, apparently, there’s more to it and other coaches and players outside of this Warrior team understand (I don’t see any “I’m a coach at ____________. You know what Coach Chow is doin’ wrong? Here: ________________________”; I don’t hear it on radio talk sports shows).

Last night’s game was promising, except defense still allows option quarterback to run for daylight. Will Gregory and John Lister ran with authority; fun to watch. Team needs to come out of the tunnel running. Chow needs to wake up and smell the roses. No, Chow needs to wake up. He is sucking the spirit out of the team. And fans. A win at Colorado St. will restore a lot.
My point is not that its any particular person or groups fault that we are where we are. Just that being a team sport, everyone should share in the victory and the losses. The good and the bad.
Maybe the future of the QB is the female. Hopefully their egos are not so fragile that they can’t sit out a few downs to gain some perspective on the game and gather their wits. This is not Chow, but Rolo too. JJ on the other hand wasn’t afraid to sideline a QB when he thought it was necessary.
For those that complain that Sean Schroeder cannot run, I remind you the same complaints were levied by some fans against two successful former UH quarterbacks – Garrett Gabriel and Tim Chang. They did not run because their role was to pass from the pocket. Sean has done that and taken many hard hits for sticking in the pocket.
You know therefore significantly in terms of this subject, produced me for my part consider it from a lot of various angles. Its like men and women are not involved until it is something to accomplish with Woman gaga! Your individual stuffs nice. Always handle it up!
So, if you go to the Na Koa luncheon tomorrow, you can ask the Coach who is there why David Graves wasn’t suited up to play… Hope they answer. Keep the speculation under control.

NWT, Gabriel and Chang did scramble when they had to. I don’t recall SS even picking up 1 yard scrambling. I’m limited to the tv camera angles or what they show on tv, but last night there was a huge opening in the middle of the field but SS threw a pass that was inc.. Could have gained a first down. I guess with SS being the only qb, the design is NO running at all, not even sliding.

Always funny when people not using their real name on online forums are the ones demanding personal information from others.
I think Chow is making a big mistake not using Graves at QB. However, to do that, Chow needs to look at fitting his system to the player– which Chow, unlike other coaches does not seem willing to do. Chow did give Graves a chance in Chow’s system, however, remember.
Examples of other coaches would be Paul Johnson using Gabriel in his option offense even if Gabriel could not run. He developed passing plays for Gabriel and the result was we beat BYU for the firs time and Gabriel outplayed a Heisman trophy winner on a national championship team– Gabriel even managed to run in one TD. Mack developed an offense for Funaki to use him at QB and his running ability. June Jones moved Robinson from under center to the shotgun to make it easier for him and cut out the bootleg plays out from under center (the Mouse Davis plays).
But that is Chow’s prerogative even if we know Graves could help the team with a more mobile style. For some reason, Graves has gotten on the wrong side of Chow maybe.
Anyone think that Shutter would be a better pick over Graves?

It seems people believe that Norm could have made adjustments to his system and won more games, but chose to tear it all down and start over with the result that winning is off in the future some time.

…and well…shroeder locks on because his mental clock is ticking and he needs protection and he needs his receivers to get open and backs to block and maybe, just maybe coach told him sit tight and not to take-off because “the play will be there, let the play develop, it will be there”.

I do agree that this year’s schedule is terrible. Is this the last year of Frazier’s planning? I hope so.
Chow is showing the traits of a senior citizen, like me!!! He is stubborn and won’t change quarterbacks, unless Schroeder gets hurt. Besides the QB play our defense is one of the worst in the country, especially the run defense. I can see blowouts against Boise St., Fresno St., and Air Force. We will be double digit underdogs at Colorado St. and I don’t think we can beat UNLV at home either. Sadly, this is what I see. And South Alabama is a toss up. Could be either 2-10 or 1-11. We will continue to watch and hope for the best, but with each pasting every week it starts to be almost a joke. Hard to take, but as a fan we can only look to the future.

The only reason I can see for tearing it all down and sacrificing the season would be because if you don’t what happens next season. I mentioned earlier, that even though it is hard for us frustrated fans to take, the players are going to need to learn the system at some point right? I am also guessing that Chow hasn’t fully implemented what he wants to do offensively either. He keeps saying things are simplified, so there must be more.
Hawaii could beat CSU, but we won’t. Altitude will be our problem, as usual when we travel up that way.
I’ll still pick Hawaii though.
I can’t wait to see what Alex Green will do next week against the Rams defense. This Texans defense is tough, and he still managed 70+. Next week could be a break out game.

Well this has been a tough season and I will always support the team so I will retire from being in the blog for now since too many negative, downtrodden are having a difficult time staying positive. I know how difficult it is to coach so my heart goes out to Coach Chow and his coaches. No one wants to lose especially the coaches and players. I do hope Coach Chow will reexamine the possibility of giving the quarterback position another look. Sometimes a player may not look good in practice but when the game starts things change. I know I know a lot has already been bantered around but maybe just maybe he should give Graves a hard look. We need to change the dynamics at that position. It might even boost the morale of the team. Any way I said my piece and just my humble opinion but GO WARRIORS. NO GIVE UP BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES ALWAYS AND NO READ THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS IN THE BLOG.

Yes, Shutter is #2 and, as kama krab posted the other day, Shutter can scramble and has the strongest arm, next to Graham. Shutter knows the West Coast offense, is accurate and has good mobility. Higgins is #3, is accurate and has a high football IQ. Graves is #4, which explains why he wasn’t dressed on Saturday. With Billy Ray back from his injury, we probably didn’t need the extra depth at receiver. However, that may change after Saturday’s game.

134. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s HC was 7-5 his FIRST YEAR in 2010, with a Sun Bowl win over U of Miami.
2011, In his SECOND SEASON, Kelly was 8-4 with a Champs Sports Bowl invite (loss to Florida State 18-14). ended season at 8-5.
2012, so far, Kelly’s team is undefeated.
Kelly’s Notre Dame football team has not been blown-out of games like we have. Show me where Notre Dame has performed like our coaching staff and Warriors. You’ve picked the wrong coach and team to compare to Chow and his boyz. lol

A good comparison would be SMU in 2008 when JJ first got there. He didn’t have his pieces and ended up 1-11. The next couple years he’s done well though.
june jones took this program to another level. mac mackin did ok and norm chow is taking it to the gutters.
I just watched Inside Access. Two comments:
1. ST really doesn’t like the IMUA on the back of the shirts. He said he expects them to be wearing blue next week, and then I think said it was ridiculous already (or something to that effect).
2. When they showed the clip of the Colorado St. coach, he said that when you start a new program, you don’t want to force kids to do what they can’t do. That you have to find their strengths and work with that until you recruit guys to fit into your system that you implement over time. And then Kekaula tells Chow, doesn’t that seem familiar? And Chow agrees with the CSU coach. I’m confused. Chow is doing exactly what the CSU coach says not to do, yet Kekaula says that is similar? He should have said, isn’t that opposite of what you’re doing?
Now, with that said, both teams have one win this year and are winless in conference. So I guess we will have to wait to see which approach is correct.
225. i kinda thought that JJ took our program to another level, but Mac slowly brought it back down. As the team became more and more Mac recruits, the program started to go backwards. IMO
Since New Mexico was a tough mountain to climb at home, I don’t think we will reach the summit on the road games anytime soon regardless if it’s Colorado St. If this is a pro-style offense, then maybe we should pound the ball more considering the big runs Gregory has been having. Why isn’t there any fullback plays? fullback dive? full back counter of some sort? That would have probably gave us a 1st down on 4th an 1 or 2 instead of giving it to the halfback who has to run 6-7 yards before he even reaches the line of scrimmage.
I know we are at the half way mark but I fear this season will be a bust and things will not turn out the way I expected. Can’t make excuses about not having enough talented athletes to compete. At this level, every athlete is suppose to be good enough to compete if not6, they wouldn’t be on the team. Besides the reality of it all is that a 4*-5* star athlete who has multiple offers from top BCS programs is not going to turn down those offers just to come and play for a losing program, well at least if we continue this streak. It all depends on coach Chow and his assistant coaches and how they utilize the current players. Coach Chow will be a great division 1 head college football coach as long as he has the right staff in place. If he doesn’t have that then it will have a ripple effect on the entire team and that will maybe the downfall for this program. I know he’s a stubbern old man and wants to stick to his guns, but you can’t fire your guns if you don’t have bullets in it and right now the way I see it, his bullets are still sitting on the shelf waiting to be reloaded and fired.
Last night it seems as if the coaches we’re not on the same page. Saw them yelling at each other and it kinda rubbed off on the players as well.
Sometimes change is good, but if change was made on something that really didn’t need fixing and the change made it worst, then maybe its time to change it back to the way it was.
It’s like a new boss coming into your job and changing a system that you and your fellow employees have been use too, productivly and efficient for so many years and now we have issues that could jeopardize the future of the entire company financially for the year. I know its a process and it takes time to so called, “Rebuild, instill, and impliment”, but was it really that bad in the last 3 seasons under coach Mac? last year 6-6 one game shy of a bowl game? and the year prior to that coming off a Co-WAC championship season? compared to the status we are currently in? It’s only been half a season for 1st year head coach Norm Chow and yet the people of Hawaii have always been living on Hawaiian Time.
Continue to grow and like my Portuguese aunty Nina would say, “Dunnfunnet! Hurry up and win some games!” LOL
Coach Chow is prepping us for the big time. We just don’t have the players he needs for his offense to work. And the best players he’s had (Iosefa, Samia, entire d-line, has been hurt) I really think next year and 2014, we will win 10+ games.

QB – Graham
RB – Iosefa/Gregory
WR – Stutzman, Harding, Gant,

You guys are the experts, you can have your discussion with the coaches and players. You guys keep posting the same whine over and over and over. If it bothers you so much, let the coaches know face to face. That is what a person with integrity would do, not hide behind a computer screen….. It will also keep your spamming off of the blog …
The future is not now. It’s next year and the years after. No more thinking just playing and reacting. No more men against boys matchups.
The O line, the RBs and the LBs will be one year older and wiser. They’ll be the foundation Chow will build his program on.
Wish we could win now but it seems Chow is determined to follow his own blue print. He must feel taking our lumps now in learning his system will have greater rewards later. He has his vision of what the program should look like and won’t deviate too far from what he thinks is the best way to get there.
For now we’ll have trust he knows what he’s doing. Aside from lack of experience he knows what areas of the team he has to shore up with the recruiting process. A pass catching TE and a speedy receiver would do wonders for the O. A couple of run stuffing tackles and a hard hitting safety would do the same for the D.

I have my opinions about certain things and have always written from the perspective of a fan frustrated with current results but hopeful for the future. I enjoy voicing my opinion as well as reading others.
Moreover, I am not delusional enough to think that my opinion overrides that of a coach with years upon years of experience. I think there are some here that take it too far and insult, berate, and badger just for the sake of doing so. I also think that there are some here that are overly defensive regarding people’s opinions.

I think you mistake defensive with the same points are being made over and over and over by the same people. @226 Kev-1 That one left me scratching my balding head too. Almost like Kekaula aired those comments by the CSU coach hoping to get a reaction from Chow. Chow agreed with the comments but Kekaula failed to ask a follow-up question and just smiles with the coach. End result: coach doesn’t elaborate on his philosophy vs his actual practice and one wonders why Kekaula brought it up in the first place if he ain’t gonna pursue it. At that point, I switched the channel.
When things are going good and ya’ll are posting positive things on here, please take time off to go down to the coaches office or practice field and approach coaches and players to transmit your gratitude and happiness.
If ya’ll don’t do that, the happiness and positivity expressed on the blog won’t be very genuine and ya’ll should refrain from those types of posts.

coach chow doesn’t explain much in his show. I like the way JJ and Tomey did things, talk about the highlights or low lights and explain what’s going on and what could have been done better. I felt better connected to the team back then.

Did you notice how many open parking spaces there were at the stadium last night. Also, there were some vendors that did not open for business. A lot of people make their livelihood from UH football. With the lack of wins coupled with poor performance one can only imagine what the attendance will be for the next home game. I applaud the UH students that came out to support their team last night.

well it was an exciting game last night.
yes, we still made some critical errors.
we still misfired on several key plays that could have turned the game around.
however, i did like the fact that we made a huge effort in the second half.
we were a half yard short on the fourth down play.
we were two false starts away from momentum taking us to the end zone.
we were slightly overthrown from hitting a wr in stride from paydirt.
yup, we moved the ball but we didn’t make the big plays and weren’t disciplined enough to sustain momentum.
we were that close really.
btw . . . why wasn’t that pop on D. Bright not flagged for unnecessary roughness? I saw the highlight on the coaches show tonight, and it sure looked like the defender launched and led with his helmet. The direct contact pushed his helmet halfway up his head.
qb situation…in all due respect for all the qb candidates.
in the spring, chow gave graves every chance to win the job. he had the most reps at the get go.
at the same time he gave all the other qb’s a chance to show who would be the leader of the pack. then, one of the potential starters ran aground with a dui, eliminating himself from competition.
the one guy who really separated himself, by light years, from the rest of the qb’s was a redshirt transfer who would not be eligible this year. yes, light years separation. he is that good when compared to the rest. but, its “wait till next year” for him.
at the end of spring and some rather sloppy play by all the returning qb’s the coach declares that higgins and graves were probably the top two. the starter yet to be determined. (note: the subliminal message here)
later, a graduate transfer enrolls at manoa. during informal workouts one could tell that he had better stuff than the others. why would he be allowed here or approved? (note: another subliminal message) perhaps, the returning qb’ didn’t get it or don’t have it or “c. all of the aboved.”
within days schroeder is named the guy. not a shock if you followed the bouncing ball from spring training or if you read the subliminal messages.
what happened to the other qb’s is sad but such is life.
now don’t get me wrong because i think graves is an outstanding individual. however, he did not fit the offense. even when he played under the run and shoot he would too often run before the shoot. that did drive rolo crazy, too. whether there is a back story to graves’ plight may only be answered by david himself because chow will not stoop low to divulge any of it to the general public (that’s class).
i will not refute chow’s decision when it comes to qb’s. just look at his history and credentials. i think he knows a bit more than any of us when it comes to qb’s. chow along with tommy lee a former little all american and long time successful qb/offensive coach surely has more knowledge than any backyard coaches.
…nuff said.

It’s not often I or any other bloggers disagree with you but in the whole SS thing I have to draw the line…The o-line was giving him ample time to throw but he continues to hold the ball and make things more difficult for himself and the recievers…You could tell he is inexperienced by what he did when he had a chance to scramble instead of running through the gap he ran smack into one of the New Mexico defenders…Okay the recievers did drop some passes but how many of his passes were either under thrown,Over thrown or throw no where near the direction of a reciever…I mean thank god New Mexico DB’s have no hands or else SS would have been picked off a few times…

anyway, i agree that a lot of passes were over or under thrown as i stated earlier. and i cringe each time he throws that hitch pattern. but, like i say he still is the best of what we have right now.
i like shutter and maybe one game he will get the call. but, for now i am not one to say chow doesn’t know who our best qb is.

Schroeder is the man with control of the ball. If we are to live and die with him so be it. I just want to see more improvement in his game. Everyone around needs to step up no doubt but the QB can make plays on his own when need be. That no huddle offense against NM was great because SS got the ball out quick, everyone was in sync to what was going on, and the ball was moving so fast NM couldn’t react in time. Not saying that’s what we need to do but it sure seemed like it was working nicely. In any case, the arguement to replace SS is a sour subject. He’s going to be the man barring any unfortunate circumstances. I just hope as a captain and leader he takes a step forward to rally the boys and get some respectability back to the offense. The defense is a whole issue within itself, but the team in general needs to do some soul searching, Seniors need to lead and not let the season go to waste. As a die-hard Warrior Football fanatic, this season has been more than gruesome to watch.

If anyone cares to know, the Warrior Walk was still successful. I got there a little earlier than I should have so I had to wait a while. There weren’t much people around so I was a little concerned that it might look thin when the players walked through. But as soon as the buses showed up, the crowd did.
I remember hearing various announcements over the PA in the parking lot.
Can they announce the arrival of the team and the Warrior Walk? Maybe an announcement 15 minutes before they arrive and a reminder of the walk would get more people to come down.

With a week bye, the stuff here should be interesting. I bet by the end of the week we’ll be talking about other things like where to eat, argue about best buffet in LV, old stuff…you know important stuff.
I will support the team, players and coaches. Frustrated, yes, disappointed, of course, second guessing, sometimes in weaker moments, but we have a leader and he is there for a reason.

I watched the offensive line all game just to make sure I was seeing everything that could possibly be a reason for those thing happening….And I Have to say the offensive line did a great job of the two sacks and two hurries out of 42 passing attempts showed the oline did their job….Of the near hurries and the times SS waa put on his a$$ don’t you think that maybe that could be attributed to SS holding on to the ball to long? I mean the oline can only protect for so long the pocket will eventually collapse…as for the recievers running the wrong routes that’s a possibility but then again there’s no way all of them ran the wrong routes on the same play and that’s what I was talking about earlier where SS stares down 1 wr and doesn’t go through his progressions…

SS does have a tendency in times to stare down his primary. The times when he looks off the primary he appears more successful. This could be due to the fact that this is his only real game experience as a starting QB. I remember TC and Colt having those issues when they were in their first year, especially TC, but as they matured, the got a heck of a lot better.
I believe SS needs to get this skill more sooner than later as his ball does not have zip like TC’s and is not as accurate as Colt.
Oh, and he does at times hold on too long, probably due to staring down his target and waiting for a release.
But what do I know.
Would have been interesting if Cayman had not had his issues, but that’s water under the bridge as I agree with Al that for this offense, he is the next in line.
