Freaky Friday

New Mexico traveled to Hawaii on a charter paid by the Warriors.

The Warriors do not use charter flights between here and the mainland.

New Mexico is taking advantage of the Hawaii exemption and playing 13 games — no byes — this season.

The Warriors are playing a 12-game regular season.

After Saturday’s game, the coaches are heading out to do their heaviest in-season recruiting. They already have made some offers to junior-college players.

The Warriors will be going from Florida to California. The priority is the generically phrased “playmakers.”

Defensive back Ijumaa Armstrong, who redshirted in 2011 and was on the scout team this year, has requested a release from his scholarship. He is seeking to transfer to another FBS school.

I wish the Warriors would come out running from the tunnel, instead of walking arm in arm. I prefer to see more energy and enthusiasm from the players.

But I never get tired of seeing them do the haka — it’s always shown on television before the game and sometimes before commercial breaks.

if you listen to disgruntled workers who were bypassed for promotions you will only hear an exaggerated story and just one side of the story.

if between two different employers/coaching staffs you find yourself relegated to the bench or scout team…what does that tell you?

you need to know both sides of the story.

as paul harvey used to say…”…and now you know the rest of the story.”

Charles Tua’au (Leilehua H. S./Pasadena City College) and David Moala (Gardena, CA/Arizona St.) remain listed on sportshawaii.com as Hawaii commitments for 2013. And I too would like to see the Warriors come running out of the tunnel. Would like to see these young men “having fun.”

As for recruiting, I wonder why Hawaii is going after a player like Joe Mathis, DE/Upland, CA, when there are 40 teams going after him, starting with Alabama and followed by teams such as Florida, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Washington and everybody else.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

It was asked: “I wonder why Hawaii is going after a player like Joe Mathis, DE/Upland, CA, when there are 40 teams going after him, starting with Alabama and followed by teams such as Florida, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Washington and everybody else.”

Probably because Hawaii would want to get him because he is a great player as proven by the fact that “Alabama and … Florida, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Washington and everybody else” wants him too.

  44. Dan-O October 12, 2012 9:37 am

    Al…

There was about 10 of them walking past my car at entrance of Ala Moana beach. Im thinking they are probably the scrubs cause I thought Davies said there would be no sightseeing and time out of the hotels?

  45. Dan-O October 12, 2012 9:39 am

Chicken….funny thing, had one cop right next to my car. So they kind of walked “nicely” across the street. One kid actually pulled up his shorts, as he walked thru the crosswalk!

TGIF! Anyone know if there will be a re-telecast of the game on Sunday? Did not see one in the SA listing.

  47. Kevin October 12, 2012 9:46 am

OcSports 1016 always has replays on Sundays at 10am HST. Or was it 10:30? But as long as its their local ppv broadcast, always a replay for sure.

Why not offer? What’s the worse he going to say is “no”. If you don’t make the effort to get those type of players then we will never get them. Of course the odds are stacked against us from being a mid-major, over the ocean, and well the team ain’t doing so hot. Still if you don’t make the effort then you will never know…

  55. Pauoa Boy October 12, 2012 10:01 am

    #4,

A-dub always got ballers on that team. There are a lot of D1 prospects that just didn’t qualify or whatever. Plenty local boys played there and have moved on to D1 programs. Sucks we lost out on Jesse Williams who went the AWC route and now beastin for #1 Alabama. Zach Quines and TJ Alofipo too as of recent. Hope Tony Grimes starts a pipeline to his A-Dub brethren when we need immediate JC guys. Also hope that Eastern Arizona dude can make his way to UH Quenton Brown.

  56. Pauoa Boy October 12, 2012 10:05 am

Ijumaa Armstrong at least has some years to continue his football career. Oh wells, just hope he doesn’t start a trend…defense needs all the help it can get right now.

For those of you who are interested in learning more about the University of Hawai`i Department of Athletics, check out today’s story by Chad Blair in Civil Beat – www dot civilbeat dot com. Interesting, very interesting. Our blog host is mentioned both directly & indirectly.

Off to the Board of Regents meeting in about an hour. Took my own advice and submitted comments on today’s agenda; however, I’m going to a late afternoon film at the Hawai`i International Film Festival and then heading up to The Stan for volleyball and the Hoopfest tonight so I won’t be hanging around to get a heavily-screened report following the Regents’ Executive Session.

Fortunately, I’ve finished all my have-2 work for the day.

  105. Ralph October 12, 2012 12:40 pm

now we are spending more money on a search committee to find an AD….I say post the names of all the applicants, in this age of social media, if there are skeletons in the closet or any controversy that needs to be vetted, social media will bring it out. Of course someone needs to check out the sources but we get instant feedback.

  106. lava October 12, 2012 12:44 pm

What recruit in his right mind would want to play for Chow? I trust the better recruits will go elsewhere, as they should.

The other real question is how many of the current players (i.e., all prospective TEs and DTs, whether they know it or not or like it or not), will transfer out. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to stay.

  107. Former UH Athlete October 12, 2012 12:46 pm

This is a big week for UH, not so much for the game, but for the coaches on their recruiting push. I’m willing to bet money that Chow is calling Lane Kiffen (whom Chow coached with at USC) to find out the players that he’s after, but can’t qualify for USC (it’s a tough school to get into, even for jocks).

I think Chow will surprise a lot of people and land a solid recruiting class to turn this roster fill the many holes left by Mack. You don’t coach at BYU, USC, and Tennessee Titans and not get good contacts for recruiting. Also, Chow’s been around long enough that the players he coached in the 1980’s and 1990’s now have high school aged kids. Chow’s former players, now parents, are going to have a strong sentimental edge to push their kids to play for Chow.

The only downside to that is that most of Chow’s former players are LDS, and we all know what happens to LDS kids that BYU misses out on… Case-in-point: Aaron Zwahlen, the highly touted QB that committed to UH, is the son of one of Chow’s players at BYU. We’ll see what happens when Aaron completes his mission, but I foresee several former players pushing their kids to play for Chow.

  111. Na Koa Mike October 12, 2012 1:20 pm

Our journey catching up with our football alumni continues today with Mike Biscotti. Biscotti was a quarterback on the 1970 to 1972 teams which went 24-9. He ranks 14th in career passing at UH and threw for 2,161 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.

Also, photos of the San Diego St. game are now up:

isn’t there a push to alter the rules regarding students on an lds mission that will require them to be bound to the signing university for at least one year after being on mission?

  113. Sdbowfan October 12, 2012 1:27 pm

    Al,

What happened to the “Exciting times.” I am pretty sure more than half of Hawaii is not excited anymore.

  114. wafan October 12, 2012 1:29 pm

Perhaps. But the trolls sure are excited.

  115. jimmy the lock October 12, 2012 1:30 pm

    Aloha Friday bloggers.

Good luck coaches in your search for playmakers.

So many had high expectations for Ijumaa. I guess you can’t judge by video alone. Good luck to him as he continues to fulfill his dreams.

  116. Buffoman October 12, 2012 1:31 pm

Each prospect will play for a coach where he feels there is a good connection; a level of trust and respect. I believe that there would be some who played for Jones, Tomey, Wags or Mack who would not play for coach Clow, and visa versa.

That’s okay, but those who will choose to come and come to play will come with “eyes wide open” as they will know what is expected.

It’s like coach Peterson, there are those who would thrive at BSU as he is regimented and has a level of expectation that some have a comfort level with and some don’t.

So, for the naysayers you may be correct, but that does not also mean that there are those who would be comfortable with his philosophy and will come.

I think like you, only I come from the place where the cup is half full, not half empty.

  117. jimmy the lock October 12, 2012 1:37 pm

Yanks continue. CC Sabathia is a large man.

GO WARRIORS! GO BJ PENN, JUST SCRAP!

  118. Sdbowfan October 12, 2012 1:38 pm

    Wafan,

Trolling the boards for some reassurance that this will not be Von Appen all over again. But the more I read, the more I can imagine Glenn Freitas at QB, empty Aloha Stadium and Eddie Klaneski being our best chance of scoring.

  119. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 12, 2012 1:43 pm

    Kevin,

Yes and No. More like it depends. The Bus is a privatized and the majority of services from DHS are contracted out to NPOs.

What did you have in mind?

  120. Bulla October 12, 2012 1:48 pm

Go Warriors, wishing only the best for you 🙂

  121. Chicken Grease October 12, 2012 1:55 pm

Orioles’ manager press conferencing now. A green bladder-busting Gatorade cup (when was the last time you saw one of those before), and two more Gatorade bottled drinks in front of him. Product placement, even in defeat. Love the pros, hahahahah.

    GO YANKEES!!!!!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!

    Mike Biscotti on #111

Mike Biscotti and Mike Perkins picked up the torch when I left Na Koa.

Mike is leading the recruitment and re-engagement efforts in an attempt to connect UH Manoa with past FB players.

    Case in Point

Mike’s efforts with the NA Koa Bowl and his leadership in the Homecoming reception for FB Alums tomorrow evening.

On and off the field Mike was/is a class act!!

  123. You already know thus considerably relating to this subject, made me in my view consider it from numerous varied angles. Its like women and men aren’t interested until it’s one thing to do with Girl gaga! Your individual stuffs nice. Always take care of it up!

” ehh shut up before I slap u.” She said to a 2 and a half year old girl.

I turned to my right and said “REALLY”

    She couldn’t say a word.

i remember one day in class, teasing him that, “no way he was six feet tall”.

but, yah he was a good guy.

  142. papajoe2 October 12, 2012 3:37 pm

Ballpicker, no worry, I still back the Warriors and will be cheering them on, win or lose. They’re just not ready yet. I thought they would be better but we just gotta be patient and look forward.Their defense cannot stop the run and their offense cannot put up yards and make 1st downs and, more importantly, score points inspite of playing teams coming in with supposedly very bad pass defense. Looking forward to the future. Hopefully it starts tomorrow.

  143. RedZone October 12, 2012 3:43 pm

wow Navy going airborne today. 3 passing touchdowns so far. 3rd quarter.

  144. Chicken Grease October 12, 2012 3:45 pm

If you know your post’s gonna be one sentence long, further consider — might you have immediate thoughts that could be placed in ONE post?

  154. 3-Prong October 12, 2012 4:40 pm

Damn, this MRC vs BOR is going to cost taxpayers even more than the 1.2 million dollar bill outstanding. She had her attorney there so looks like the school may have to hire MORE high attorneys to protect itself on top of a $400k buyout, unless we get rid of her for “cause”. All of this assuming the school wants her out.

  155. 3-Prong October 12, 2012 4:58 pm

We should have a “smoker” and have those involved put on some 16oz gloves so nobody gets seriously hurt. (1) 3 minute round should be nuff time for instigator to put up or……….

#154 @ 3-Prong … To me, the Senate accountability videos (all 14+ hours) showed the UH administration & BOR leaderships have a very close working relationship.

All of them seemed to indicate that their lawyers were providing reasonable interpretations of the law. They also seemed to be in agreement with … fact finders are expert witnesses for the purposes of procurement rule exemptions; redaction of public documents is reasonable; the JD settlement isn’t really a settlement; the consult meetings that discussed public topics were not a problem; hiring JD into the settlement position can be book kept as a savings; rank and file BOR members are presented with expensive deals and given the impression they can either approve or UH gets sued.

It will be interesting to see what the SCA02 report says about law enforcement’s findings.

  165. cocobean October 12, 2012 7:58 pm

    jm2375,

All the regular readers can easily recognize Mr./Ms Negativity. I don’t let anything he/she says bother me. Their me against the blog attitude tells me it’s coming from a very lonely person. Someone who can’t bounce his thoughts face to face with other people.

Irritating others seems to empower him/her. It gives him/her a sense of worth. Someone to be reconned with. Someone who is unafraid to take on all comers.

That’s my sense of Steve and all his incantations. He’s someone I feel sorry for rather than irritated by. If he ever calls me an a**hole I’ll just say to myself,”poor, poor Steve. Get a pet to keep you company.”

  189. Garret October 13, 2012 1:58 am

The Vegas line on the UH-New Mexico game wasn’t set until late in the week, probably because there are so many variables (UH is much better at home, New Mexico is so different from last year). But it looks like they initially decided to make *New Mexico* a 3-point favorite yesterday.

The gamblers seem to be pretty surprised about New Mexico being favored and have been putting their money on UH. The UH went from a 3-point underdog yesterday morning to a 2.5 or 2 point underdog last night.

#184 3-Prong … 🙂 Okay. The BOR & UH leaderships have so much common interest that I am not expecting to see aggressive negotiating on the part of the BOR with respect to the President’s employment status; in contrast, the University of California system got a resignation. If the Senate Committee finds additional items of concern and reopens the hearings, I was just thinking that maybe that could change.

Considering the cost is around $1.1M now, your $2M number sounds like a good guess.

  238. kev-1 October 13, 2012 8:21 am

Good morning all. If anyone is looking for a good football game being played right now, Iowa St. and Kansas St. is on FX. Very competetive game so far.

  239. kev-1 October 13, 2012 8:23 am

This QB from K-State is legit for sure.

  240. d1shima October 13, 2012 8:24 am

    Grrr…..

gotta get a 4G LTE device.

    Good news for Ralph though!

  241. d1shima October 13, 2012 8:25 am

    Hmm…

Stats show Steele “Get” Jantz apparently relegated to clipboard monitor again.

  242. βρεω808 October 13, 2012 8:25 am

    rock quarries –

In ancient times, they would have peeps pounding away, day after day, pounding and pounding and pounding. Same ol’ thing, non-stop, pounding and pounding.

    => gravel

    Maybe – not so ancient…. 🙄

  243. d1shima October 13, 2012 8:27 am

Looks like Mack Brown getting his Ash kicked again by OU

  244. Ralph October 13, 2012 8:28 am

A barn burner in the Plains, K State leads Iowa State 27-21 with 4:21 to go in Ames. Whitey, are you pacing the floor?

  245. kev-1 October 13, 2012 8:28 am

Yup. Jantz got replaced the other week. Too many INTs I think. The guy who replaced him has played well, so I think Jantz may be done. I did see him split time last week I think (or maybe the week before).

  246. βρεω808 October 13, 2012 8:28 am

    #56 for Moanalua HS is awesome! – 2 bad…. 🙁

  247. kev-1 October 13, 2012 8:31 am

247 . . . got to see Pagano play for the first time last night. Yes, he is a beast.

  248. kev-1 October 13, 2012 8:34 am

just when I say the Iowa St. QB has played well, he just goes out on a crucial drive and throws a few HORRIBLE passes.
