Aloha means Las Cruces

On today’s conference call, New Mexico coach Bob Davie spoke of the challenge of playing a game in paradise:

“I told them last night: Don’t expect to see much. This is a total business trip. In fact, I may even get, like, some pictures of, like, the beach, some girls in bikinis, some of the beautiful geography, and just put it in their rooms for ’em. Just kind of put big pictures in their room. I may put together a little pamphlet they can look at on the plane flight over there.

“This is what this is. This is just like we’re going to Las Cruces, New Mexico, to play a game, but we’re going to Honolulu to play a game. It just takes a little bit longer to get there, and we’re going by plane instead of bus. But, hopefully, the focus is the same.

“That’s what it is. I don’t want to sound like Scrooge, but I’m not going over there to be a tour guide and show our players what a beautiful place it is. We’re going over there for one reason. Period.

“I may not have said that to all of them when I recruited them last year, but that’s the message they’re getting now. That’s what it is.”

Heh, to Davie . . . he can tell them that all he wants; and he can school himself on the dynamics of the Alamo’s last hours, too.

He WAS on the winning side last time (Irish) . . . time for Warriors to return the result ;).

The question is, can Zhwallen dance? Can he do the three step behind center… or is he married to the shotgun?

  10. Top ten Halloween Apps (great for kids and adults). One of the things that bothers me about a lot of Top 10 and other ‘best of’ app lists is that the apps chosen are skewed predominantly towards younger children. Halloween is one of those festivals that isn’t just for kids – teens and adults get to dress up and have fun too.

Davie has done a great job so far of turning around New Mexico’s program. The Lobos didn’t give up after falling behind against Boise State and almost pulled off the comeback upset. The Warriors have a big challenge facing them on Saturday.

When our guys go to the mainland, doesn’t the same apply? I’m sure there are a lot of distractions along the way… for some, the 1st away game is their first trip off of the island. Pairing up and sharing a room can be a distraction, too. Doesn’t matter where you go, if it ain’t home, it’s distracting.

  16. HawaiiMongoose October 9, 2012 8:47 am

It’s concerning to hear that Joey Iosefa’s ankle sprain has turned out to actually be a “stress injury” to a “weight-bearing” foot bone. Presumably that means a stress fracture which normally requires one to two months of complete rest to heal and can take as long as four months. Now it’s up to Will Gregory, Ryan Leaf and Sterling Jackson to get the job done.

Nah I don’t think so, NM has a dominant run game, we tend to make running backs look like heisman candidates cause we can’t stop the run anymore. Plus since everyone else on offense is supposedly run and shoot oriented instead of pro style except Sean Schroeder, we will continuously be out of sync and not be able to score. Sean Schroeder seems to be the only offensive player suited for the system according to expert bloggers here. So again NM – 49 UH – 0.

  31. Old School Dave October 9, 2012 9:33 am

Go Warriors!! There’s still a lot of football to be played.

To the players, you’re going through some rough times now. Things will get better if you continue to believe in yourselves and your coaches. This is an important life lesson you are now experiencing – you can either listen to all of the negative people and comments or you can keep fighting and working hard. The game of life is no different, you have to keep on fighting in order to overcome adversity. Life is not always going to be good times with everyone wanting to be your friend. The alternative is to give up, go home, and feel sorry for yourself – in other words, letting the naysayers win. That would be too easy.

  32. d1shima October 9, 2012 9:40 am

    helencalif,

IIRC Coach Tommy Lee is HC Chow’s “eye-in-the-sky” during the games. Lee is also listed as the official OC but…

  33. Manoa Mist October 9, 2012 9:42 am

Still not convinced Norm is not just throwing this season away. He could certainly do more with what he has – and not just wait until he gets his own boys in camp. John Wooden would adapt his schemes to the type of players he had – that would mean using guys like Graves who can run and throw and not SS to just sit back there, get killed, and chuck shots into guys who are double covered. Surely we can be more creative than that.

  36. Pauoa Boy October 9, 2012 9:52 am

    Manoa Mist,

No use bring that up anymore cause supposedly Schroeder is the only capable pro style QB we have. He’s not the problem from what the experts here are saying. Supposedly the receivers are run and shoot guys who cannot produce cause they are not pro style guys. The OLine cannot block in this offense either somehow. Don’t blame Schroeder anymore cause he has brilliant moments that we are supposedly not seeing. It’s everything else around him that is making the offense suck. Too bad we can’t bring in more Duke scrubs with pro-style experience cause then we’d probably be awesome like say Duke?

I like Bob Davie. Seems like a nice person on TV as college analyst. Doing a good job with the Lobos. New Mexico will try to run the ball and run the ball some more. I don’t think Hawaii can stop it for most of the game.

    Prediction: New Mexico – 31, Hawaii – 10.

Rich Miano looking like a good head coach. Maybe somebody made a mistake??? Just saying out loud. I’ll make a prediction right now. Either Taylor Graham or Aaron Zwahlen will be the starting QB next year. Schroeder’s passes doesn’t have the zip and he is not athletic enough. I know Zwahlew is a very good athlete, runs sprints in high school and he’s very, very fast. Graham has the strongest arm in the program now. We need a lot of defensive lineman in both size and talent. The cupbard is bare and other teams are running through our line like water going down stream. And that spells disaster. Chow and Co. recruiting for next season will be the most important class. The only defensive player who has commited so far is Charles Tuaau, formerly from Leilehua, now at JC.

  49. madeinhawaii October 9, 2012 10:59 am

Chow will stick with Schroeder through thick and thin barring any injury. Why? Because every error made, every play well-executed, every snap becomes a usable memory for the QB. If the QB is smart enough and can digest and eschew what he has experienced with split second awareness, accuracy and a bit of sleight-of-hand, good things will start to happen. In Chow’s offense, the burden of the Offense’s success is on the QB. The Offense will repeat every play they have practiced at game time, till they can execute each to near perfection. The emphasis will be on execution more than on winning until they can execute the majority of plays successfully. By that time, they should automatically be winning.

    so…while many are blasting schroeder.

on sunday i got to watch the dvr of the sdsu game.

two critical fumbles led to two td’s in the first half.

a dropped ball right on the hands negated a sure td.

we could have gone in to the half down 21-14

we come out with a td drive. it could have been 21 all.

    we drop more passes.

    turn over another for points.

we make lolo penalties when we stop their offense.

we miss blocks here and there.

we miss tackles here and there.

if we give schroeder 1.5 sec per play he would have completed more passes.

if we had our receivers hang on to those drops.

if we ran our routes properly we’d be open to throw to someone, anyone.

another qb would have abandoned the play 1.5 seconds sooner than schroeder does. ss stays in the pocket as long as possible like no other. well dan robinsion comes to mind. he takes hit after hit. no complaining on his part. other qb’s would be scrambling out of there and not able to complete too many passes. (its the oline that needs to buy the qb pizzas)

not schroeder. give him time in the pocket and someone who is open and he raises his completion average 20%. we need to correct the pass pro and the route running. we are brewing a bad formula right now. no time and no one open = no good results.

ever wonder why we are heavily recruiting receivers? olinemen?

ever wonder why we came out of spring ball with no clear #1 qb?

ever wonder why we went after two qb’s as a top priority? before this season? (even rolo knew this).

    these are not subliminal messages.

these are right in front of our eyes folks.

  53. Kekoa October 9, 2012 11:34 am

  60. HawaiiMongoose October 9, 2012 11:46 am

Great post al. You hit on all the salient points. Effort is not an issue but poor execution is killing us. And with so many injuries coupled with lack of depth forcing so many true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and first-year transfers to play in key positions, the experience and physicality needed to consistently execute just isn’t there right now.

  71. wowlaulau October 9, 2012 12:29 pm

lol, yes the problem is the QB …… Last time I checked the QB did not play all 11 positions on offense and defense. The breakdown has been more than one player … that is the problem. Hopefully the coaches and players improve each game…..

  72. Abunai October 9, 2012 12:29 pm

#52 Al: AMEN BRO!! Well said! We are in need of OL and WR! Badly!! Defense can only do so much. I know defense wins championships but we need to score on offense when we can. And like you said al the OL need to give sometime to SS and open holes when we run. At times I can see WG run good when he has openings. But more often then not there is nothing! We need OL BAD!! Others that we need is DT and DE. We lots alot at DT this year and it will only get worse. Even at DE.

But we need the state of Hawaii to buy into what NC is doing and more importantly we need the student athletes to buy in and believe in NC. That’s what needs to be done…. That’s just my 2 cents…… Have a great and wonderful day to all of Hawai’i.

And btw: is it just me or has it been REALLY HOT!!!!

  73. Kevin October 9, 2012 12:37 pm

Kudos to the 2013 Rainbow Wahine for gutting it out and having a very energetic first practice yesterday in these HORRIBLE conditions.

Big props to the Rainbow Wahine Soccer ladies as well. That 2 OT game against Fullerton must have been just brutal to play in. Plus it also doesn’t help when a Fullerton goalie cheapshots you in the back with a kick…but that is for the Big West to review.

  74. Pauoa Boy October 9, 2012 12:37 pm

Let’s call it a 2-10 season and leave it at that… Maybe we get a win at South Alabama who knows? So in 2008, we lead the nation in giving up 57 sacks…we had 3 different QB’s start that year with Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki, and Tyler Graunke. A year after Colt and a bunch of key guys leave. Still we scored in every single game was never shut out. Actually finished the regular season at 7-6 and conference play at 5-3, earning a Hawaii Bowl trip and eventually losing to Notre Dame. The offensive line play was the worst ever as we led the nation in sacks given up. But thanks to Alexander and Funaki especially based on their play of throwing and being able to run to help out such an atrocious OLine, we were able to have a winning season. I also believe that was a tough schedule with Florida, Oregon State, Fresno State ranked, Boise State ranked, Cincinnati and the rest of the WAC. So with that being said the QB can still be the guy to win games with his play alone. Funaki and Alexander and Graunke all proved that in 2008. Do I feel Schroeder can, hell no! Has he gotten better since the beginning of the season? Maybe somewhat. All I’m saying is SS may need a break to figure it out. Why not try Shutter, or Graves or whoever else is on the depth chart. You never know what you really got unless you allow them some shine. Graves proved he can play and move an offense regardless of his shortcomings of not hanging in the pocket. I’d rather him gain yards then get abused. Schroeder may not be all that bad but at the same time there really hasn’t been much of an improvement from game to game. Wouldn’t hurt to try someone else. Colt wasn’t a starter right away, Greg Alexander wasn’t a solid starter right away, Moniz wasn’t either. Just saying maybe there’s someone who will shine if given the chance cause obviously our QB ain’t getting it done regardless of Oline, receivers, etc…

  75. Kapahulukine October 9, 2012 12:40 pm

The broken play QB TDs will kill us. Especially if they do it at will. One after the other. It’s going to kill offensive morale. Kaumeyer: remember your high school coaching days! Remember that Thanksgiving backyard touch football game last year!

If the QB scrambles for three TDs in a row, he’s probably worth putting a spy on. Whoever scored the last couple of TDs, keep an eye on him. Okay, on three. Ready, break!

  80. Kapahulukine October 9, 2012 12:47 pm

    74.

Wasn’t 2008 when MacMackin hired Brian Smith, a 25 year old former UH long-snapper to be the O-line coach? And the results were predictable. Critics (yes, they are valuable) were saying on this forum “fire smith”. Smith was given an honorable discharge next year. If I”m not mistaken, we got Geordie Smith who understood blocking technique, tactics. And we went 10-6, and Moniz had good protection. Best thing: we beat the spread five times. Awe!!

  81. Kapahulukine October 9, 2012 12:56 pm

I find it funny, well, rather hilarious….that we all are questioning the minds, and decision-making of coaches who have 20-30 years of coaching experience at the college and pro levels.

As a former head coach at the high school level, I have a bit more knowledge than the average, casual fan. I’d just like to leave everyone with two simple thoughts:

    1. The coaches KNOW what they are doing…to think they don’t is simply absurd.

    2. Yes, we have the talent (some, not a lot, that we can withstand injuries to our starters). BUT, it takes more than a month of fall practices to understand AND run the new offensive and defensive schemes, when performed at GAME speed. Both sides of the ball are in the SEE…THINK stage. They are slowly moving into the DO…REACT stage. We’ve seen glimpses of it this past game.

  88. Kapahulukine October 9, 2012 1:32 pm

Yes, it’s absolutely hysterical…1-4, losing by 45 pts per game. And nobody gets to ask why? Sorry, people are still going to complain (justifiabily)

  89. Former UH Athlete October 9, 2012 1:38 pm

    @Pauoa Boy,

The talent level returning in 2008 was far better than the talent returning in 2012. So by saying Mack did better job than Chow is not a fair statement…

Notable returning players on 2008 roster, which was McMackin’s first year, not including true freshmen:

NFL draft picks: Greg Salas (WR), K. Pilares (WR), John Estas (OL), Ryan Mouton (CB), Jake Ingram (LB/LS), Dave Veikune (DE)

NFL/CFL Free Agents: Mana Silva (S), Soloman Eliminian (LB), Corey Paredes (LB), Aaron Kia (OL), Vaughn Meatoga (DL), Daniel Libre (RB), Jameel Dowling (CB), Brashton Satele (LB), Liko Satele (DL)

The 2012 roster only has three NFL prospects that I can see… Will Gregory, Mike Edwards and maybe Alex Dunnachie. Outside of those three, I don’t see any other player even getting asked to try out at a pro camp. I hope I get proven wrong, but that’s what I see.

  90. OC Warrior October 9, 2012 1:43 pm

    @Former UH Athlete

You took the words right out of my mouth. You are voice of reason in these tough times, keep up the great posts!

  91. wowlaulau October 9, 2012 1:45 pm

#89 and the defense and offense was basically the same as the previous year….

  92. wowlaulau October 9, 2012 1:46 pm

#88, people can complain but voicing an opinion/complaint logically is different than an ignorant/whining rant.

  93. Inyoface October 9, 2012 1:48 pm

I think we can complain about the qb since we have no one else to compare him to, Graves might succeed or might fail, we’ll never know. I just hope we can beat a D1 school this year.

  94. Former UH Athlete October 9, 2012 1:53 pm

On the positive side, I am seeing flashes of good play on both sides of the ball. Gregory runs very hard and I think he’ll be a star under Chow. Being a former QB (mainland high school), I can see Schroeder making the proper reads and he’s actually an accurate passer, he just lacks arm strength, time to throw and WRs getting open.

Just remember, Taylor Graham will be starting next year at QB, so don’t get too worked up over the QB position this year.

On another positive note, never though I’d see myself saying that I’m glad to see a punter, but it’s nice to see the ball booming high and down field again… no more unpredictable rugby punts.

While undermanned and undersized on defense, I see very good effort. The lack of depth is causing the defense to gas out by late 3rd quarter, that’s when the scores have gotten out of hand in the losses. Mike Edwards has been great. He held his own going one-on-one vs Robert Woods (USC), and I love that he’s physical with receivers. Hardy-Tuliau has been pretty good too, but looks like he went down to injury on Saturday.

  95. jeezy33 October 9, 2012 1:53 pm

Mack’s inability to recruit is killing us right now. It’s not so much the players, it’s the positions per class that killed us.

His 1st year, I think Mack brought in 2 JC QBs who really got outshined by a walk on.

5 JUCO WRs that didn’t even play. That will kill you. 5 JC guys who don’t really contribute much. So 7 scholarships that went to JC players at 2 positions that really didn’t help much. From that recruiting class alone, only 3 remain on the team after Hanohano retired. Correa, Falemalu, and Laurel. When you have only 3 guys from a recruiting class remaining, that will hurt a lot. Fans will want to give Mack a pass for that year because he got hired late but thats college football.

2nd year- Another JC loaded roster. I understand maybe 5 Juco guys, but not 10. You can’t build a foundation that way. From that recruiting class, only 8 players remain on the team. So the lack of leadership and experience is starting to show.

As of right now, UH has a total of 11 players from Mack first 2 recruiting classes left on the roster. That isn’t going to cut it in regards to having experience at each position

Al @52: if there was a “like” button on this blog…I would have clicked it! 🙂

  97. kev-1 October 9, 2012 1:55 pm

Why is it that when someone says something bad about the QB position, people come out of the woodwork to defend him, but it is okay to bash on the oline and the receivers? This makes no sense. Obviously we can be better at QB, WR, OLINE, . . . EVERYWHERE.

There are valid points to make on both sides. YES, Al is absolutely correct. If all of the other things, protection, drops, etc. were better, Schroeder would be playing better and there would be no calls for a change. Given enough time, he can get the ball where it needs to be, and pretty accurately.

I think those that are calling for that change are basing it on the fact that protection and drops, etc. aren’t getting better, so maybe a QB switch could work. Being under pressure (and I give credit for SS for his toughness) only highlights his weaknesses. He doesn’t have the arm strength or quick enough release to get the ball where it needs to be when under so much pressure.

Another QB may struggle just as much as Schroeder is too, but we’ll never know. I think Chow’s focus is to fix the things around Schroeder first. I guess that makes sense for the long term. But for frustrated fans that want wins, they want quick change and results.

Once UH let Coach Mack go, I felt sorry for whoever they hired given this year’s schedule. Even with good players it would have been a tough first half. I think that is why JD wanted to give Coach Mack more time, he probably foresaw that any change this year would have been tough for the new hire. If Mack struggled this year, it would have been easier to let him go and since it was the last year of his contract there would be no buyout.

I don’t think Dirk Koetter would have been the answer, he had some off field issues with some of his players and apparently ticked off some alumni and administrators while he was there, not a good fit for Hawaii’s unique culture. Also, if people recall, our 2006 team killed his ASU team in the Hawaii bowl.

  108. Former UH Athlete October 9, 2012 2:20 pm

kev-1, I haven’t seen Yap play enough to get a good grip on him. I need to rewatch film to see how he’s been doing. He’s switched to DT out of necessity and at 260, he’s way small for DT. NFL caliber is usually pretty easy to spot.

As far as UNM coming in town this Homecoming weekend… I dunno. UNM’s strength is running the option. UH’s biggest weakness is d-line. So not a good match up there. UH needs to win the time of possession, and cut down on the silly mistakes in order to win.

With both teams preferring to run, this could be the fastest game at Aloha stadium in quite a long time.

  109. Former UH Athlete October 9, 2012 2:23 pm

Another note, the 2012 schedule is probably the toughest UH has had in several years. The MWC is a huge step up from the WAC.

  110. Pauoa Boy October 9, 2012 2:25 pm

Okay you’re not getting my point. Did I say Mack is a better Coach then Chow, no. All I’m saying is try someone else cause the offense is not producing. I already know the defense is getting killed and I’m not talking defense. I’m talking offense. The point I was trying to make is that 57 sacks is getting your ass kicked in. Alexander, Funaki, and Graunke could throw and run, they helped the shitty Oline play. Does SS help the oline…nope! Besides if given time any halfway decent QB can make throws better. Obviously we don’t have a strong Oline just like in 08 but we did have mobile QBs who made plays. SS like any other QB with time is going to be successful. Is he doing anything to help the Oline by maybe scrambling or running or throwing the ball away to avoid a sack…nope. We’ve got receivers that can play and are proven. Yeah Kealoha and Salas were special but Stutz, Miah, Gant, Harding, etc…can ball too.

  111. Moocher October 9, 2012 2:26 pm

    Al…

exactly what i been saying all along.

some people really just don’t get it.

i said before, offense averages 20 pts per game defense gives up 44 pts per game. if the defense can limit what they give to 3 tds instead of 6tds we’d be in every game the rest of the season.

coach K said in the beginning said his philosophy is that the d will not react to what the opposing team’s O is doing rather the D is going to impose it’s will on offenses. well, maybe that’s why when we are on D it looks like ships passing each other in the night (or afternoon). the D is doing its own thing, the opposing teams O is doing its own thing…ummm we don’t need the ships to pass each other–we need them to collide 🙂

  112. OC Warrior October 9, 2012 2:27 pm

I really thought Coach Mack was a good DC, a decent person and a very nice man (well except to Dave Reardon, apparently the chewing out he gave him left a deep wound…lol). However, he was not HC material, I really wanted him to do well but every time he spoke in public it gave me that uncomfortable feeling like when your drunk uncle gets up to talk at the Christmas party, you never know what inappropriate words were going to come out.

I also was/am a David Graves fan but he had all Spring and Fall camp to win the job. Coach Chow even went on a SoCal radio station when he got the job and said he thought they “had a guy they could hang their hat on in David Graves” but that was before spring practice. Same thing happened at USC when Carson Palmer graduated, they came out of Spring practice without a clear winner between Matt Leinert and Matt Cassell. Matt Leinert dedicated himself to winning the job and the rest is history.

    Howzit, Gang!

    I still trust in Chow.

You could see and sense it in his latest interview… the emotions about to spill over… disappointment, frustration, etc. at how (slowly) things are catching on.

He’s shown us the direction he wants to take things. We’ve already seen glimpses of vision with changes that have already taken place around the program. I don’t recall a single voice upset at the military training, short haircuts, Warrior Walk, etc. Now, seems none of our coaches can do right, no matter what.

    Let’s go, Coaches!

    Let’s go, Warriors!

    Looking for further progress here!

  120. Shoko October 9, 2012 2:54 pm

Warrior fans are just going through growing pains similar to the team. I think some folks are more emotionally vested than others and tend to express it differently.

At least thats how my therapist explains it.

  121. AllG October 9, 2012 2:54 pm

I agree with Pauoa Boy Schroder has got to go. The QB is the most important position in football and is the primary reason for a successful or in our case unsuccessful team. If the offense was moving the ball and giving the defense a breather, it would help out the D a lot and I think there play would pick up. Be Chow is stubborn and wants to change everyone but the QB and he has gotten no results. Maybe because the problem is the one change you have yet to make!!!! There is a reason why he did not play a Duke. And Duke by no means is a football power house or QB factory. Nothing against the guy personally, he seems like a really nice guy, but give someone else a chance. Stop burning through redshirt players because that is not the answer, especially half way through the year.

  122. Shoko October 9, 2012 2:57 pm

Not sure if the MWC is a step up. If it is, its not by much. However, I would say the Warriors out-of-conference schedule this year is alot tougher than years past.

  123. AllG October 9, 2012 3:00 pm

To be successful with a pro style offense you need pro style players. Which he had at USC. In Hawaii we don’t get those players. The years Hawaii has been successful we ran a gimmick offense( triple option and run n shoot), which hides the lack of talent and puts us on a more even playing field with the more talented teams.

  124. Pauoa Boy October 9, 2012 3:00 pm

    111,

Your numbers are off sorry to say. I do not count the Lamar game because that is a team you use to pad stats on, which is kind of like what we are right now. Against actual D1 teams we are averaging a mere 12pts a game. If the defense plays even 3 times better than what they’ve been playing we still lose. Defense is getting trampled but still don’t matter cause the offense still ain’t scoring enough anyway. Lamar game should not be counted. Kahuku could’ve whooped their ass.

  125. Shoko October 9, 2012 3:03 pm

Bob Davie has different offensive packages for his two QB’s (Holbrook and Gautsche). In Chows system, its one package for one QB regardless of skill set.

  126. al October 9, 2012 3:04 pm

on another note…tommui, i just got a coupon in the mail for a free 1/3lb burger at the counter. i think there’s also a free ice cream sandwich to boot.

  127. jimmy the lock October 9, 2012 3:05 pm

Win as a team, lose as a team.

    No blame any individual.

Most all of us know barring any unforeseen circumstances, there’ll be a new starting QB next season. So in my mind, give those that have put in the hard work and sweat a chance. Coach has shuffled the defense, why not shuffle the QB? I’m not hating on SS. He’s doing the best he can do.

But if one can see personnel changes elsewhere on the team, why not the QB position? How bad can it be? The other QB’s put in their time, give them a chance to shine.

Again, I’m not hating on SS but as a fan I’d like to see what the other QB’s have to offer.

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!

  128. Kapahulukine October 9, 2012 3:06 pm

    Former UH Athlete:

You keep saying the UH defense is gassed by the third quarter.

Whose fault is the lack of conditioning? I’m not sure Kaumeyer or Chow should really be given too much slack, given they probably have 50 years coaching experience between them. Are we too assume they didn’t have time to prepare a fitness program? Just leave it up to each player, as he sees fit? I ain’t no “former high school coach” (yeah, right) but I know most coaches have conditioning, fitness as a number one issue starting any season. If that’s an issue in all these ugly mismatches, I think Kaumeyer, Chow take huge responsibility.

  129. Shoko October 9, 2012 3:07 pm

I think Mac was a decent head coach and a very good DC, but it seemed his heart wasn’t into football anymore. Might explain why he decided to retire instead of looking for another coaching gig somewhere else, which wouldn’t be hard to find with his resume.

  130. al October 9, 2012 3:10 pm

jeezy33…great research work and you are correct that is the root of this year’s problem. lack of numbers and squandered scholarships are coming back to haunt this year’s team. out of 50 potential scholarships having but 11 on the current roster spells doom.

  131. Kapahulukine October 9, 2012 3:11 pm

A good and decent man. I think he was losing it a little bit in the sound reasoning department. Kinda strange behavior. But not a bad record, especially with the shock of the Sugar Bowl blow out and sudden exit of Jones.

  133. al October 9, 2012 3:16 pm

    letsgowarriors…now about that tight end.

some of the birdies are saying that we may not be receiving too many verbal commits until a little later. unless it is the holy grail, which we may have already secured a verbal from, heard that he is a whale(n) of a player.

the reason for the quiet front is that we have less than 15 to secure so its got to be a well spent $200k scholarship.

  134. al October 9, 2012 3:17 pm

a little birdie believes that a tight end could also be holy grail.

  135. Leron October 9, 2012 3:23 pm

#128 the D is so short handed, it’s not conditioning. Beau Yap for example, is a prime example of this team playing hard. He must’ve been in on almost every play on defense…I’m guessing at least 60-70 plays. The conditioning is there. The opportunity to get a breather is not. The offense has to be on the field longer to give the D some time to rest. The last few games, not much chance for that.

  136. Chicken Grease October 9, 2012 3:26 pm

These naysayers. A Grease would love to know their own background to prove their, um, football acumen.

Somehow — no matter how right they seem to merely sound — a Grease simply refuses to put stock in the “coach MUST do THIS” instruction of those who brag 3-10 different football fantasy leagues, win their bets every week (and, really, they don’t come up with the odds on their own, right?), and, the big daddy of ’em all, no real coaching experience (honestly, any league that comes before at least high school coaching experience — and even, then — doesn’t count, you wanna talk about something that doesn’t count).

Because a Grease thinks those really involved in the game — no matter their opinion of Chow, staff, and players — understand that they’re going through a first year. YEAR ONE. It’s bad, but, they know it can happen.

  137. Pauoa Boy October 9, 2012 3:27 pm

If were bagging on the recruiting efforts so much, how come every year when the recruiting lists come out everyone is cheering up and down about this player and that. Then once they see them play and its not what’s expected they say oh the recruiting was horrible and the players aren’t good enough etc…don’t make sense. I will agree that it is hard to build a solid foundation with JC guys instead of true freshmen for sure. But I guess it is what it is…

  140. WWF October 9, 2012 4:03 pm

Okay, about Coach Chow and the QB debate, I agree with a lot of what Al said in #52.

But, on his last Inside Access show, Coach says that Sean is not a running QB, and then continues that Joey as the Wildcat QB is out with an injury. He says nothing of using other Wildcat QBs on our roster, who have the ability of run, like Graves or Alo.

My hope is that he finds opportunities for a player like David Graves. Especially with Joey out.

I believe that David could be very successful in the Wildcat position.

  141. Shoko October 9, 2012 4:14 pm

In my opinion, Graves would be a good Wildcat QB. However, there seems to be issues other than just his ability to fit into Chow’s system that might not be so obvious. The fact that Graves was absent on the travel roster for the last game was strange. I can understand if he was left of the roster due to academic reasons, but that doesn’t appear to be the reason. Makes me wonder if there are relationship issues between Chow and Graves. Just speculating, but I have a feeling Graves is frustrated and might seriously consider transfering after this season.

Here’s one first-year head coach on developing his players for teh future. A sign that might be saying that he’s giving up this season and folcusing on next year.

“Weis announced on this week’s Big 12 conference call that he practiced without seniors on Sunday, citing the need to develop younger players for the future.

It’s an odd approach for Weis to publicly take considering he is just five games into his first season in Lawrence. The Jayhawks are a miserable 1-4, but two of the losses have come by seven or points or less.”

You know what the saddest thing about what you naysayers and negativators (yeah, heh, unless that exists somewheres else, a Grease coined that last term; don’t tell me — it’s already the name of a Decepticon? Ah, $@+7.) miss about this whole first Chow season, yeah, yeah, yeah, call it what you want, “blow out season” “worst season Warriors ever had” (funny how the season’s not over yet)? You know what you miss?

You naysayers and negativators are gonna kick your respective selves if you have kids or operate in a Big Brothers/Big Sisters or youth organization.

You miss that what’s happening with (not “to”) the football Warriors is good for kids to witness.

You know Tsaikaidas, let’s not forget how successful Coach Chow is in football. Experience with the best programs in the nation; great championships. Good NFL experience. And a Ph.D. (a Grease has commented about a Ph.D. before. You cannot, though, deny the work it takes to earn those) to boot; in a field not too far from the “game of football” (a phrase coaches like to use as Mr. Tsai informs us). So, we have a coached — UH football Warriors and fans and UH-M itself — are blessed to have a football coach with practical and theoretically-related experience to help build this program.

Build this program from the ground up, as we were reminded in this week’s Norm Chow: All Access.

But, a Grease digresses a bit.

We want our kids to do their best. And a lot of them do. And a lot of them don’t. This season’s Warrior football situation is a good lesson for kids and those in their informative adolescent, high school, even college years[!] . . . indeed, every one of them, kids.

This season’s Warrior football situation, thus far, as experienced by the coaches, players, staff shows us all — but mainly benefits kids — in showing that you can work hard, do the right things . . . and there are just going to times in your life where you will not get the expected result.

And what needs to be focused on in discussing with kids this seeming lesson is, yes, that it might happen because there’s someone with more of what their teacher or selection committee or potential company to which they are applying for a job.

But, moreover, we must teach them that at the beginning of things — especially with new beginnings — you have all this experience, child, yes, I know you did ALL of this. Accomplished ALL of this. Teacher praised you EVERY step of the way. If the Dean’s List were personified, that personification would, by gum, want to MARRY you even if that personification was . . . um . . . well . . . you know . . . well, parts of such similar union is legal now and . . . well, you know what Grease gets at here. Ahem.

That in the next part, next chapter in their life — and remind them that there will always BE a next chapter in their life — there will almost always have to occur a significant rebuilding. Proving yourself in the next part of or chapter IN your life.

Adults. Those of us been through all the junk. Tell a Grease he’s wrong. Be honest.

Because maybe we wish we had THIS lesson early in our own respective lives.

We rebuild. We keep going. USC, Oregon, LSU, they have great seasons? Let ’em have it — because you’re going to explain something responsible to your kids: there is no utopia. It’s not “your life will suck.”. Of course not.

It’s “your life will have its ups and downs and when it’s up, enjoy your life, keep working hard, keep following the law, pay your taxes, eat your vegetables . . . keep doing the right thing. When your life is down, ask for help if you need to; but, you keep going. You stay (here’s that word again) positive. You don’t down hard liquor and go for a drive. You don’t hit someone.”

You let them know to believe in themselves and that people will talk about them no matter what — it’s something that just cannot be controlled. (good reference to “Pandora’s box” would be prudent to offer, too. Kids nowadays, they can look that up, good with the computer and all. What? You thought “Pandora” was only a music service? Tch. Get out of the house some time.)

Remind them that it’s perfectly OK to have an opinion and to speak up. And you also tell them that doing anything negative only ends up wasting their energy.

You tell to keep in mind that they’ll have to rebuild throughout your life, no matter how many 4.0s and 0s that you have after that first # on your paycheck.

And they will HAVE a life.

    # # #

Rebuilding starts from the bottom up.

    Who’s at the bottom?

What and who is the foundation to start a solid base?

Are we building a concrete or a temperary wooden structure?

And do we have the right tools to build?

Or do we have to utilize and make use of what we have?

    When is the dead line?

How much time do we have?

    Good Luck.

Well, since many are in the “what if” mode at the moment, just a little blast from the past regarding one particular head coaching candidate. When he was the head coach at ASU, Dirk Koetter’s tenure at ASU players were charged with an assortment of crimes ranging from theft, assault, rape, attempted murder. Here’s one particularly disturbing example:

1.5 sec? Whow talk about taking complete credibility away from the O-line.

One, Two slip ups because of a delayed corner blitz that was suppose to be picked up by the RB, yet we tend to blame the O-line and not see the inability for a QB that doesn’t have the mobility to step up avoid the rush and scramble out of the pocket, yet alone look down field for open recievers who clearly are wide open waiting for the ball to be thrown.

This may help with what me any many other hard core warrior fans are seeing.

    http://youtu.be/lwQ7KCVUzrY

The problem will not get better unless this improves bottom line. Not asking for anyones head or a change in personell, just hoping it get better. Still hurting.

Coach Chow is not slated to serve only one season. Coach Chow mentioned they are building from the ground up; maybe he needs to amplify what he means.

Coaching staff — especially this first season — should be trusted to do what they do. Trust a Grease — if you met Coach Chow at, say, a party and the question of what YOU do for a living came up, and Coach Chow had an opinion and/or told you how to do YOUR job, well . . . wouldn’t FEEL very good. Would feel worse if he patronized the product or service of whom you work for. Riiiiiiiiight? That would be just ONE incident.

Coach Chow gets to be told what to do constantly (just look at this board alone). He must needs focus on what he thinks he and the assistant coaches need to be done vs. listening to the tower of babble (yes. A Grease knows it’s originally “Babel”). It’s like what Spock said, (paraphrasing) “all things being equal, the simplist answer must certainly be the solution.” You Trek types, clean up that quote for a Grease.

It’s what they’re paid to do. “Thank you for your opinion, sir.”. They know if they don’t ultimately succeed, they gone. Of course they know this.

They have the skills and the background. That’s why they have the job.

“We’re not gonna let you down. We’re not gonna let you down” [applause follows this quote during live Call the Coach radio show — UH Warrior head football coach, Call the Coach, ESPN 1420 AM, October 9, 2012, 6:43pm — note: this board’s time stamp is off. So don’t be going, “oh, Grease conspiracy, Grease conspiracy” on all and all.]]

    169,

Be careful, there are a lot of experts here who see things differently. That clip did not show the brilliance he has. I guess people like us don’t know what were talking about at all, we are ignorant to ever think that the QB is not the problem. Like I said before people keep saying who can he throw to, the Oline doesn’t give enough time… Proof is on film, how many times has he missed his check down guy frikkin wide open to where a frikkin jumbo jet could park. Seems like he locks on to one guy to try and make the long throw but if he ain’t open, there will always be that check down guy or throw the ball away, or scramble and run, which as you see he does neither. A QB can move the defense with his eyes but you can clearly see he locks on to his primary target and doesn’t see the whole field. Oh well what do we know, were just ignorant and whine and not part of the little popularity contest going on from the real football minds in here.

Tayson Hill, BYU QB who killed UH, out for the season due to knee injury on final play of BYU 6-3 win over Utah State. He was supposed to have taken a knee on the play that gained 4 yards with about one minute left to play, per staradvertiser.

UH should have someone else taking some reps in the game besides Schroeder in case he gets injured.

Donovan claims that the Foundation approved everything that was paid for, otherwise he paid for things himself. If the Foundation approved the spending, blame the Foundation. If they want to make a case for it after the Foundation approved it, then I would call it “entrapment.”

The Foundation is the check and balance of JD’s expense account. If they didn’t do their job properly, whose fault is that?

  203. kama krab October 9, 2012 9:07 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Been going through the post and see alot of stuff I agree with and some I don’t. I for one think that it not only falls on Schroeder but on the rest of the offense. There have been times where the O-line got caught with there pants down on the outside. There have been times where the RB’s have missed blitz reads. There have been times where wide receivers have not gotten open and there are time where Schroeder has just not made the right reads. There have been enough mistakes to go around. The bottom line is the offense needs to continue to get better. They need to continue to put in the time to make things smooth. I do not think that a change in scheme is the right thing to do since this is an offense that we will be using for the next 3 years. I feel that growing pains are expected but we need to see a little better play each and every game. I thought we had flashes last game. Just not enough plays being made and not enough ball security. Like I said, there is alot of blame to go around and by no means does that leave out the QB or anybody else.

  204. oldtimer808 October 9, 2012 9:08 pm

  205. papajoe2 October 9, 2012 9:11 pm

I’m not doubting Coach Chow in starting SS. It’s just that while getting blown out or even in the Lamar game where we we blowing them out, why didn’t any of the other qbs get significant playing time. I beleive Graves and Shutter played in the Lamar game in 2 different series at the end of the game but each handed the ball off every time. Even in the SDSU game when SS had to leave with an injured hand and Higgins went in, he only handed off in running plays. No other qb attempted a pass for UH after 5 games. Even the coaches could look at film of the other qbs in game situations and correct or teach them. That is what is strange to me.

  206. SAWARRIOR October 9, 2012 9:22 pm

hi K.Krab, howz u been brodha

  207. kama krab October 9, 2012 9:25 pm

    On the QB situation,

I go back to the spring game. What I saw was a nightmare of epic proportions. That night nether Higgins nor Graves could hit the side of a barn (I don’t mean to say this but that’s how bad it was). The best QB that night was the Freshman (that’s not saying much cause he was not very good either). Reads where terrible, footwork was bad, it was just ugly. It was so ugly that I had to turn to Vinny Passas to ask his opinion hoping to get some kind of good vibes but he also thought we needed alot of work. I had hoped that Graves would shine but he did not. The only QB that was not present due to a big mistake on his part was Cayman Schutter and that is the only QB I feel comfortable with if there is any change to be made. Cayman comes from a high school program that blended the pro-style with some spread. Cayman can scramble on top of having maybe the second strongest arm next to Taylor Graham. I’m not saying that he would be the answer but compared to the rest may be the only answer if a change needs to be made.

    Well put.

  211. kama krab October 9, 2012 9:35 pm

    And don’t get me wrong,

I thank Graves for sticking in there for the team and I also thank Higgins for sticking in there but for me, I just don’t think they would be the answer. I just feel if we put them in we would have to totally change what we are doing just to fit there talents and in the long run, I just don’t feel that it will help anyone but these two players. I think with the type of players we have that yes, it would make sense to go to a more spread look but on the other side of that, how would that help us in trying to transform into a ground and pound team. I think sprinkling in some spread stuff would be fine (which I have seen done already) but a total change in scheme would set us back a couple years.

  212. SAWARRIOR October 9, 2012 9:36 pm

i liked what i saw in the Pistol and multi-formations. clean-up the miscues, i think we will be alright. We won’t score 30 PPG, but will score some and take time off da clock. Most here think the pistol is for only a running QB—no its not. it’s a power running formation. for reals. a run/pass QB gives more options, but a non-mobile QB will be ok too.

My main concern is the D schemes. even with the injuries we should be able to hold our own against NM, they are a 1 demential Offense, but watch-out for the pass up the seam. LB, key on the lone pistol RB and we should hold them to something manageable.

play more zone-blitz, and mix in some man-press, we will be okay, but one never knows what the DC will do. IMO

  214. kama krab October 9, 2012 9:46 pm

    #213 SAWARRIOR,

I agree with you on what you said. Yes the pistol option read offense does not need a mobile QB to make a work. It would help to have a freak back there with the back but is not needed. It is just another way of grounding it and pounding it.

On the defensive side I tend to agree with you also. With so many injuries to the D-line I also feel that we need to tone down on the man press and go to a more zone defense. If our line had not been so decimated with injuries than I feel we could have run a pretty solid man-press defense cause we would have had a very solid line but with the line the way it is, I would rather see a zone look with sprikles of the man-press.

Man with a solid recruiting class though, this man-press defense could become a real crazy defense with alot of pressure coming from all over the place. For now though I feel we need to wait and go to a more conservative defense. JMO

    215. go to a more conservative zone D mixed with man-press, 100% agree. a conservative D takes time off the clock and makes the O work for it (bend no break). An aggressive D is high risk, high reward, but we not getting it done— we don’t have the horses just yet to play that as a base D. IMO

conservative zone D, error free special teams play and Pistol O, we should be able to keep the score manageable. we should be competitive. i would hope so. lol

The favortism is so blantant sometimes from the same people. If donovan followed protocol that is one thing, but when it comes to prudent better use of funds that is another. So many coaches at UH are critiqued for their spending and even if they stay in budget, their expenses are under heavy scrutiny.

Yet… spending foundation dollars to send staff to enjoy the Final 4 to “see how a big time event should be handled” is a great way to spin something and isnt it ironic how months later they end up screwing up what could have been a big event. yeah people think Donovan is untouchable because so many people here had interacted with him at some point they feel they have their own “club” with the former AD. Talk about hypocrisy.. people complaining about favoritism and putting out scapegoats when they cannot be objective about documented facts.

  222. John Fitzgerald Byers October 9, 2012 10:32 pm

600 thousand dollars approved by the UH foundation from Donovan’s requests… how many bathroom stalls could have been fixed for that? how many more laptops and study aids could have been bought for road trips for all the players at UH…

Sending Mr. Clueless McNamara to the Final 4 to see how big time basketball is run?

You can blame the foundation for sure, but they didnt make the request to spend money on that item and other things as well.

    210. i went out to a couple of city pubs sporting my “H” cap, and this hot looking blonde come up and say, “im from san diego and we kicked your ass”. lmao talk about big-time deflation! lol

    Wow.

That sounds like a significant story and considering your constant criticisms of the coaching staff I imagine you would have shared this story earlier since the game was on Saturday and it is now late Tuesday evening.

Convenient recollection to enhance your current argument?

Some people just create a second blog name to agree with themselves to enhance that same effect.

  224. Moocher October 9, 2012 10:37 pm

some want to blame shroeder and more so coach for not putting in someone else??? how about maybe, just maybe coach is not putting anyone else in because they are nowhere near ready to go in???

    wow, what an amazing thought?

if anyone else were ready to go in he’d be in.

when coach says we are sticking with shroeder that means “hey shroeder, i’m still giving you the opportunity, but you need to improve” and it ALSO means, “hey higgins, shutter, graves…either you can pout, be content, or step it up and prove yourself worthy to take the top spot”.

there is no right or wrong or who should be in…it’s who earned it, who proved themselves, and who is ready…

    pretty simple.

WHAT ARE CHINESE FIREFIGHTERS? ARE THEY A GROUP OF MORE THAN TWO? HAS ANYONE SEEN THEM FIGHTING FIRES? AS A KID I REMEMBER SEEING ACTORS IN A CHARLIE CHAPLIN MOVIE RUNNING AROUND PRETENDING TO TRY AND SAVE A BURINING BUILDING AS PART OF THE PLOT IN THAT COMEDY, BUT I’M PRETTY SURE IN THOSE DAYS THEY DIDN’T EVEN USE CHINESE ACTORS, LET ALONE FIRE FIGHTERS. WACHOOFIGGA?

  229. AlaWai October 10, 2012 12:28 am

IMHO Dr. Chow sticks with Schroeder because he wants to imprint his offense into the team. Chow wants the team protecting the QB. He wants the QB to stay in the pocket and make the right decision. This can only happen through repetition. Schroeder has two years eligibility and next year Graham will have two years. This gives Chow three years to implement the changes he wants and two years to recruit players who fit the system. Grant it, it might not work. Then again it might. I haven’t seen SS making better reads. I haven’t seen the OL and RBs blocking well enough. I’ve seen special teams make a huge improvement and until the DL was decimated with injury the Defense playing well enough to keep us in games. Blow outs were for the most part a result of offensive turnovers. Ideally Dr. Chow will get the team to a level of competitiveness and the wins will come. In his system, Chow will produce more NFL worthy players. If he does not succeed we can see the return of trickery football and an overtaxed defense. So ask yourself if you want a team that goes 7&6 to qualify for the Hawaii Bowl or do you want us competing for perfect seasons and big bowl games? I for one will wait patiently to see how this team and next years team develops. If we want another chance at a Sugar Bowl this is the way it has to be. Dissect and criticize all you want, I believe Dr. Chow knows a lot more about football than we can ever hope to know.

Chow knows more football than all of us combined. But he made a choice against his original idea of trying to use the talent we had in the receivers, running backs, and quarterback– he said he wanted to use what they were good at in the run and shoot and transition to his offense that way– Von Appen made the same choice.

Contrast that to June Jones who changed his offense after a few practices. He was going to use Robinson in the typical run and shoot under center (like Ron lee and Mouse), but realized Dan was better in the shotgun. He started practicing with one and two tight ends and H-backs like Norm and like he did in the NFL, but he found their ability to run pass routes was limited and their blocking was nullified by bigger defenders clogging up the middle. He wanted smaller tight ends who could run quick routes and catch the Ball and spread the defense and force them into a mismatch with a linebacker or go to nickel coverage. He often noted he could not find good B-backs or tight ends, so he converted offensive linemen to big backs or used an extra guard near goal line. The players he recruited for tight end he had to send to the defense and two of the three went to the NFL that way.

When he struggled his second year he met for a week with Bill Walsh to revamp the offense from the offensive line to the pass routes and alignments on offense.

I think Chow can do that too, but IN HINDSIGHT, he made a choice not too that went worse than he thought.
