Bear market

Sometimes you get the bear.

Sometimes the bear gets you.

The Warriors will learn more today on the conditions of weak-side linebacker Art Laurel and defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau. Laurel left with a problem with his right knee. He was not on crutches after yesterday’s game, and there is no decision on whether he will undergo an MRI. Hardy-Tuliau left with what was described as a concussion. Both started at new positions yesterday — Laurel had moved from the strong side, where he started the first four games; Hardy-Tuliau was at cornerback.

This might have been a one-game reunion for UH and San Diego State, which is heading to the Big East next year.

don’t think the bear needs to eat for the rest of the season. it pretty much had its fill.

As bad as the loss was yesterday, there was a little improvement on defense. The 17 points off of turnovers killed Hawaii early and often. The WRs need to catch some passes, too many dropped passes again. Miah and Company had many passes hit in the hands and between the numbers and they dropped them. Screen passes kill this type of defense every time Kaumeyer needs to tweak the defense a bit. Mike Edwards, Beau Yap, Pai Pai, Tavita Woodard and Will Gregory are studs, the rest of the team needs to step it up.  But its a road game and its still only the 5th game in a transition year, as hard as it is to watch the Warriors take another beat down, I will have patience.

    Good Sunday Morning All!

  6. mo808 October 7, 2012 3:07 am

Get well soon to wounded Warriors Art Laurel and John Hardy-Tuliau!

  7. NYUHTX October 7, 2012 3:07 am

Better. Hopefully we can mark this as a turnaround game. Shroeder is ok. We are used to quicker QBs, especially release times.

  8. J October 7, 2012 3:07 am

    Morning.

  9. Moocher October 7, 2012 3:21 am

the biggest thing that offers hope in my opinion was chow changing things up. that’s the thing i wanted to see the most.

agree…shroeder is doing better then we can hope for. by no means is he perfect.

this year is disappointing…next year i think the mango tree will show flowers…this year, ahhh, no moa mango season.

pray edwards stays…we gonna be awesome as long as chow is willing to mix things.

thank goodness we not playing LA Tech this year

  10. just saying October 7, 2012 4:00 am

Still dont know why norm chow doesnt play his second string quaterback when the game is out of reach , What if shroeder gets injured and the backup has no game time experience when you are in a situation when they might have a chance to win. Still think it will take some time for the offensive adjusts to the blocking schemes and we will be at a disadvantage whenever we get into a third and long with a quaterback who cant scramble to give him time time to pass or run .

  11. mo808 October 7, 2012 4:05 am

    Condolences to the Chi Family.

  12. mo808 October 7, 2012 4:20 am

ST, very good article this morning!

  13. mo808 October 7, 2012 4:21 am

I really like how Schroeder is not giving up. The following quote: “I have faith in all of the coaches and I have faith in all of my teammates,” … “I can tell you one thing: I’m working my butt off. I’m not getting discouraged…We can all improve. That’s what I hope to do next week.” I admire that!

  14. mo808 October 7, 2012 4:23 am

We have a very good team going through transition. I hope to see them toughen up this week for homecoming!

  15. Graham October 7, 2012 4:47 am

I hope Cayman gets some time. Sean just doesn’t do it for me. Our offense could not look must worse. Right now we are one of the worst teams at the FBS level. Mike Edwards is real thou

  16. AlaWai October 7, 2012 4:54 am

Aloha Kakihiaka! Hauoli Lapule. Pray for Warrior healing. Be thankful you live Hawai`i. Pray for the Warrior Ohana. We are one and must stand united. The team learns from each game. Stand behind our team and support those charged with leading them. They feel the pain as well and are working very hard to bring victory to Hawai`i nei! We are Hawai`i. We stand as one. Imua!

    #17 – AlaWai

Mahalo for your great post. You are right. We are one and stand as one!

  18. AlaWai October 7, 2012 5:08 am

Warrior ohana: Like many here I am a 49rs fan. Prior to his taking over in SFO, the Niners were a floundering team. When Bill Walsh took over in 1979 many were skeptical as he went 8W-24L in his first two years. Look at his record http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/WalsBi0.htm In 1981 the Niners won the SuperBowl. Walsh’s career record is 92W-59L. I site this info as Coach Chow reminds me of Walsh. His mannerism’s, his demeanor and his attention to detail approach to coaching. I agree with the need to change upper campus management of the school and the need to correct the wrongs done in the AD office, but I will not “quit” on the team as a fan or supporter. I hope you will stay onboard as well. Imua!

  19. lava October 7, 2012 5:08 am

Chow Time is B-O-R-I-N-G. Every game is over by half time. Apathy rules the day.

  20. lava October 7, 2012 5:13 am

Football is as much about entertaining as it is winning and losing. If UH can’t put on an entertaining football game, I don’t blame any fans for losing interest.

What you are witnessing right now is really bad football. Other teams are laughing at Chow with two quarters yet to play.

  21. Wes'side Warrior October 7, 2012 5:15 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Condolences to the Chi ‘ohana, first off. Very inspirational story.

Secondly, healing prayers to Laurel and Hardy. Sorry, I had to. Healing prayers to everyone else too, boyz, coaches, and fans.

Listening to the game last night, I had the sense that we are improving in some areas. But right after a feel-good moment, we drop a pass, have to burn a time out for taking too long, or get called for a weird penalty, like too many in da back field, or jumping over the wedge blockers.

Still gotta move them chains on a more consistent basis. I liked the slight hurry-up we ran early against Reno, and it was very effective. Wish we could see more of it.

Wondering… Coach Chow has said how he used to always be in the booth, until this season. Would he consider going back up there to get a better view of what we’re doing (and not doing), along with what the opposing defenses are doing? If so, who would be the (on-) field general?

Also noticed that in earlier games, our kickoffs would reach or go through the endzone. Now, it’s most often short, or even goes out of bounds.

    Anywayz, enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Heal up, Warriors! Homecoming around da corner…

  22. mo808 October 7, 2012 5:16 am

@19, AlaWai: Absolutely! Support the home team! BTW: dem 49rs looking real good again too!

  23. lava October 7, 2012 5:17 am

As predicted, Chow’s inattention to early recruiting is really going to cost the team now. No quality recruit is going to come to UH and play for Chow in this ridiculous system.

It wouldn’t surprise me if guys like Yap transfer to play at their natural positions. If Beau has a future in the NFL, it certainly isn’t at DT. Kid has as much heart as he does talent.

  24. Wes'side Warrior October 7, 2012 5:18 am

And before anyone gets all hu-hu about it… NO, I did not mean “Laurel and Hardy” in a disrespectful way. Just a play on names that brings back fond memories.

  25. Derek October 7, 2012 5:18 am

The margin of losses the last 3 games, 45 against Nevada, 47 against BYU, and 38 against San Diego St. Not to mention 39 point margin against USC. This week, New Mexico who is much improved under HC Bob Davie. New Mexico played Boise St. tough losing only 32-29. It doesn’t get any easier. I think New Mexico will start as about 7 to 10 point favorites. Our front 7 is being mauled on defense. We just hope it doesn’t get ugly again. Kennedy Tulimasealii, we need you to be a Warrior. Right now.

  26. lava October 7, 2012 5:22 am

Here is the SDSU game in a nutshell. In a fourth quarter that meant nothing to SDSU, UH gets 8 yards on 1st down. Despite going for it on 4th down, Chow still can’t pick up the first down, and the balls goes over on downs. The offensive guru can’t take this team 2 yards in 3 plays, against SDSU’s second team, at a point when SDSU has a bend-but-don’t break mentality. Chow couldn’t even make them bend. 4 and out = Chow out.

  27. just saying October 7, 2012 5:23 am

Cant say norm chow follows his own philosophy when says he makes changes to his starting offensive and defensive players to get the best players out on the field . when he doesnt do that for quaterback position.

  28. lava October 7, 2012 5:27 am

Expect ESPN will make room for UH in its bottom 10. Wins by Idaho, Army, UAB and Cal, coupled with Chow time in San Diego, almost makes us a lock.

  29. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:13 am

I’m not believing in this wait 2-3 years junk for this team to turn around. If they don’t improve by the end of the season, I say Chow should resign while preserving his name and spare UH the horror…Chow and Hawaii is just awful…he’s so stubborn..stubbornness is one of the main ingredients for failure..

  30. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:21 am

    Pauoa Boy,

Imagine. We have to endure this for another two years..Chows’ literally ripping our football-fan hearts out of our bodies..this sucks so bad

  31. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:22 am

And what’s worse..his stubborn ass is not willing to change anything..please Chow RESIGN.

  32. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:23 am

Spare us the horror..:anybody still have positive thoughts????

  33. wowlaulau October 7, 2012 6:24 am

Ahh the internet, anyone with an opinion is an expert and a know it all … life is good

  34. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:25 am

    Al,

Realistically, as I always respect your opinion, what do you think is the problem with this football team?

  35. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:26 am

    Expert? Know it all? Uhmmmm…..ok.

  36. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2012 6:29 am

Funny to be called a know it all, when everything I have said can be backed up with facts, knowledge and whatever else you patty cake fans want to sugar coat!

  37. tom-warriornation October 7, 2012 6:29 am

yes; why is our defense always fooled by screen passes, QB runs/mis-direction plays & passes to the tight ends? Because our offense doesn’t do these; and we don’t have a running QB or option offense.

Why do we keep running right up the middle on 1st and 2nd downs late in the game; with no fakes to keep the defense off balance? I want more creativity for our offense.

  38. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:34 am

Some fans are just so unrealistic..it’s as if they want to show everybody that they’re a ‘true faithful warrior fan who will never give up on the team.’ That’s so corny..get real and wake up.

  39. hightide October 7, 2012 6:34 am

As I mentioned last night the athletic department might not recover financially, after paying for travel cost and your normal expenses; how many new fans are going to drive out to the stadium and watch this fiasco?

Ten thousand less fans a game means how much in revenue lost. Coach Chow better wake up unless his intention is to blow up our RAINBOW/WARRIOR heritage that the great coaches in the past have built;HOLMES,

    PRICE,TOMEY,WAGNER, JUNE JONES,end even MACMAKIN.

4 STAR athletes will they ever come now after seeing these games?

  40. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:36 am

    See reality. Not fantasy.

  41. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:38 am

I’m huge warrior fan…but sad to say it does not look like they will win another game the rest of the season..this sucks so bad…and please don’t come with the ‘if you’re a true fan then you wouldn’t be trash talking’ crap..quit it..that’s so corny lol

  42. Shoko October 7, 2012 6:39 am

Boise State is still on the fringe of the AP top 25. There must be a serious love affair between the Broncos and the AP voters. There’s a few teams that are unranked that could easily give them a loss. Yet they are ranked 24th. I don’t get it.

  43. Keoniana439 October 7, 2012 6:41 am

Coach Chow, if you take out the game against FCS Lamar; you have only scored 6 TDs all season! Schroeder and the WRs have no chemistry- Play DAVID GRAVES!!!

  44. GA Warrior October 7, 2012 6:41 am

114 yards passing, 114!!!! this man is not an offensive genius, he is completely out of his league. You had your top running back returning, your top 4 recievers, and a qb with 4 games experience and an offensive coordinator in Rolo who was getting better each year. We averaged over 31 points a game last year, this was not a broken team!!!!!! Chow will set us back 4-5 years, this is going to be the norm (no pun intended) for the forseeable future unless someone steps in and admits that this was a terrible mistake and get Rolo back here. For a head coach to say he doesnt know what to do and that he doesnt have the answers is a clear signal that he is in way over his head. The kids dont deserve this, they were no where near this bad last year, actually we were not a bad team (just had some bad luck and late breakdowns). Four out of five games COMPLETELY EMBRASSED on NATIONAL TV, being outscored 217-48, I dont care what changes are being made, we are not that bad. Chow needs to go RIGHT NOW!!!!

  45. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2012 6:45 am

Boise State has built a reputation of being a solid football team, that is the reason they get the respect we will never get…

  46. Keoniana439 October 7, 2012 6:46 am

A true fan supports the team yet is also HONEST about the teams performance!, I’m not gonna Telly kid the he did ok even if he’s got straights F’s.. I must tell him to work his butt off because he has failed… I’m not going to say; UH did a good job while they didn’t; I saw the game, Paipai Falemalu played with heart; I can’t say that for the other players – the coaches has failed to bring the best of out our players…

  47. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:49 am

    Keoni

    I agree

  48. Pauoa Boy October 7, 2012 6:50 am

I’m pretty sure none of us is giving up on the team at all, but frikk all we want to see is some respectable football on the field. All we’ve been this season is the laughing stock of college football. I mean a win against Lamar is like beating up on Kalani High School (sorry for you Kalani High alumns) but you know what I’m talking about.

  49. NYUHTX October 7, 2012 6:51 am

Sadly bottom ten is a lock but I did see improvement. Time to see the Boise State model go into effect with different combinations of players perfecting different sets of plays.

  50. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 6:53 am

    NYUHTX,

Just curious…what improvements did you see that were made in yesterday’s game?

  51. AlaWai October 7, 2012 6:55 am

Lots of frustration here. The heats been turned up several degrees. The team and the coaches feel worse than we do, because they had much higher expectations. Football creates more passion than any other sport in the USA. The season is at its midpoint. Upper campus is in disaster mode. We are 1 and 4. Groan. So, rather than call for the coaches head, what positive suggestions can we make to improve the teams performance and record? If other QBs performed better in practice would SS still start? This is year one in his eligibility. Is the coach already looking at 2013? How should he fix the defense after losing 3 DT’s? With his current roster, what should the coach do for a short term fix? Like you, I have been wracking my brain searching for solutions. Times like this shows how we are as supporters of the program. This week is homecoming. Will you vote with your butt and get it over to Aloha Stadium? Come out Tuesday to Kanikapila Grille at the Outrigger Reef and tell the Coach how you feel and hear him out. It should be a very lively session. At this time our war cry should be “Occupy Aloha Stadium!”

  52. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 7:09 am

    Alawai,

I don’t think anybody wants to watch a horribly-coached football team..regardless if they’re a fan or not…this is just horrible

  53. wowlaulau October 7, 2012 7:15 am

#54 +1, it is also a sign of integrity/maturity. It is easy to be a know it all whiner, it is obvious that there are major issues with the team but it is about supporting the team and coaches during the season. When the season ends their record/improvement will determine what happens.

  54. MauiSamurai October 7, 2012 7:15 am

31 – agree with your statements. Time for Chow to admit there are changes needed to be made in the coaching staff. Have pride in our student athletes. But lost faith in our coaching staff. Chow talks a good story but can’t back it up!

  55. AlaWai October 7, 2012 7:15 am

If your kid is playing a sport and they have a losing record and look horrible, do you stop going to their games? Do you boo your kid and their coaches? Out there, on the field is someones kid. Out there trying to teach and coach is someones, father, brother, uncle or friend. Shift your “stinking thinking!” a bit and you might see things differently.

  56. LizKauai (iPad) October 7, 2012 7:17 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Didn’t read the blog yesterday…

    Today is a new day.

Many times I have seen people compare football to the military.

Military discipline, training, teamwork, band of brothers, win win win, battle hard, fighting spirit, follow orders without question.

With that comes the need for cannon fodder.

For there to be winners, there will be losers.

Times change and with them, an increase of capacities and opportunities.

The time for peace has come.

    Food for thought…

Love and Healing Energy to all.

    Go Warriors!

  57. nanakuli October 7, 2012 7:24 am

I hope Tyler Graham and some JC O-line and D-linemen will help Hawaii in 2013. If 2013 is like 2012 what will happen to Coach Chow?

  58. AlaWai October 7, 2012 7:26 am

G’mornin Liz! The balance has shifted and the karma from upper campus now casts a specter on the school. There is a need for some shifting of thought and mana. Only then will we see a paradigm change. Have a great day!

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid October 7, 2012 7:35 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!

And some days, it’s almost un”bear”able to watch. These are tough times for all UH fans. And for the players and the coaches.

All we as fans can do is hope for improvement. But there are positives to be found in the play and in the future for our Warriors.

Meanwhile, can’t blame those who are upset. Its frustrating.

Hope the wounded Warriors heal up, and that nobody, Warrior fans or players gives up.

  60. Da Punchbowl Kid October 7, 2012 7:35 am

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  61. MauiSamurai October 7, 2012 7:40 am

Coaching changes are needed. Even Mack had to do it to! He learned that to win games you needed staff to teach your players so he started to make the changes. But the powers to be wanted a change, so Mack is gone. In comes Chow with all his grand schemes – just like VA – but no production. Players are out of position, wrong schemes are called, etc. When will the coaches teach the proper techniques? Chow is in dreamland if he can get players that fit the pro set offense – may get a few but not enough for the whole team (similar to VA). Wagner, Jones and Mack had the better schemes then Chow. This is going to be a painful next 3 years! Bleed GREEN but powerless! Hope all U power brokers can set the cart up again with the upper campus fiasco, AD, and football!

  62. Wes'side Warrior October 7, 2012 7:51 am

How come da experts hea neva put in one application fo da job when Coach Mack was sent off? Even afta Coach Chow was hired, how come you guys neva apply for position coach jobs? Just wondering why he hired all those other guys when we had experts right hea at home!

Okay, ’nuff already. Yeah, we all pissed. Yeah, most of us are real, life-long fans since hanabata dayz. We’ve seen da good, da bad, and da ugly. All the times through your lives, you start something new. What? You was experts already?

You wanted to build one pigeon coop, but neva have all da right wood, chicken wire, whatevas. What had to do? Improvise, right?

So, relax. Nobody going judge your pigeon coop. But look your pigeons. Das da winnahs. Bumbye you can work on your pigeon coop to make ’em mo bettah… den, all da neighbahs going tell all da friends fo come ova and try look at da coop in your back yard. Wow! Da buggah nice! Good ting dey neva tell you fo tear ’em down when you went first build ’em!

  63. kev-1 October 7, 2012 7:53 am

You can’t make coaching changes before you make player changes. The players are the ones on the field performing, or not performing. But then again, changing players are coaching decisions.

It is not bad to have faith in your players. But look at the defense. It wasn’t working and was injury depleted and changes were made. Every week, I might add. Why should it be different on the offensive side of the ball? If it isn’t working, make changes.

  64. kapakahi October 7, 2012 7:55 am

Laurel got hurt on a blatant block in the back by SDSU on the punt return that wasn’t called by the refs.

  65. MattyBoy October 7, 2012 7:56 am

    #60,

    What will happen? Bye-Bye.

  66. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:02 am

Wesside, I enjoy your analogy, but that’s not really what happened. UH went out and payed good money on what was thought to be a top of the line pigeon coop that was supposed to come with good feed to help our pigeons spread their wings and fly. Our pigeons are flying, but they look disoriented and lost. Meanwhile, the fans are getting their feathers ruffled.

  67. sdbowfan October 7, 2012 8:03 am

Stop the excuses!! The rebuilding excuse only works if there is improvements every week. I have NO improvement and UH is getting worse. Chow needs to held accountable for a lousy product.

  68. Bryson October 7, 2012 8:08 am

Yesterday’s game solidified as least for me the fact that a QB change is needed…I understand Coach Chow’s scheme of ball control but when your constantly going 3 and out and QB takes 2 years to decide what receiver to throw then short hops it or over throws them it’s either you change the scheme of you change the player…Defensively I think because of the 3 and outs on offense the defense is on the field way too much….

  69. papajoe2 October 7, 2012 8:09 am

Hint to gamblers: Go against SDSU next week. They didn’t look like a good team either but the score will make the house give them too much or whoever they’re playing will give them only a little.

  70. Sdbowfan October 7, 2012 8:10 am

Hint to gamblers: Do not gamble.

  71. Rodney October 7, 2012 8:14 am

    Players need to make plays!!!!

I believe in the Local Chow.Give um

chance with his recruits next year!

We need more talented and Akamai

    players. Who made this football

    exposure !!!!!

  72. helencalif October 7, 2012 8:15 am

    Re #11 just saying:

If you want to know why Coach Chow does not use his back-up QBs, I suggest you go to YouTube and listen carefully to what Chow had to say on Oct. 1 at his press conference following the BYU game and his thoughts on the upcoming SD game.

First, about the BYU game: “no excuses, none whatsoever” which was followed by typical coach-speak of generalities of what went wrong. Looking forward to San Diego, “we have to keep fighting.” “We have to see what we are good at, we have to keep the defense off the field.”

At 3:40 he responded to a question (I could not hear the question): He said, “We need David Graves outside.”

He gave a laundry list of injured players — some would be back for the SD game, some would not. He said he had tried to put a travel roster together that morning (Oct. 1), but he doubted he had 64 healthy players to take to San Diego. (Graves, who he said was needed on the outside, was healthy, but Chow did not put him on the travel roster.)

Questions were put forth about the offense. He said, “I don’t think we have any offense problems… I believe we are OK with our offense.”

At 6:36 he said he does not believe in changing QBs. He said he believes in a one QB team. He said, “Admittedly Sean did not play as good as he should have.” He then implied that the problems were with the Offensive Line. He then said that he would get into Sean’s mistakes later. But he never did. The press conference ended.

Since he has a weekly press conference every Monday, it will be interesting to hear his recap of the San Diego game.

  73. Wes'side Warrior October 7, 2012 8:16 am

Actually, what I was saying was… we get da right pigeons… just da coop itself need work. Guess da coop could be da coaches, could be da framework (or schemes). We not using da skillz of our pigeons. Cannot race with da Show Birdz… those only for Show! Gotta max da abilities of da right birdz in da right spotz.

Kinda reminds me of the street-smartz vs. book-smartz (Trump) The Apprentice show.

Anywayz, enjoy the rest of your weekend, Gang!

I still believe going get bettah!

  74. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:19 am

    Wesside . . . I agree with that.

  75. Sdbowfan October 7, 2012 8:21 am

The QB change will not happen and it is because Chow is as stubborn as a mule. UH will NOT be able to attract top recruits like we hoped and it will be a bumpy 3 years. Thanks UH powers that be. Next time hire someone in the JJ/Mouse Davis tree of coaches. JJ was good but his ego was bigger than the island and assumed players would flock to him instead of vice versa. Mack kept putting his foot in his mouth in which led to his demise. Hopefully Rolo will come back with a wealth of knowledge and a motivated recruiter. I am willing to wait for ROLO when Chows contract expires.

Tolerate till ROLO comes back should be the UH fans motto!!!

  76. Sdbowfan October 7, 2012 8:23 am

Whoops I was wrong. We will have to tolerate Norm Chow for 5 years. Hopefully we can get ROLO at a bargain.

  77. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:23 am

Chow seems a bit stubborn with the QB position. He is the one who has the reputation as QB guru, so who am I to say. People like to say that players are off limits on these boards. I agree with that when it comes to personal attacks, but when it comes to performing or not, fans can speak their mind. It would be nice to see what else we have at the position.

As for why Graves never sees the field, I am just assuming Chow doesn’t seeing him fit into what he wants to do. I think most of us are finding out the answer to a question that we had earlier this year when Graves lost the QB job. Will he stay next year, or transfer. I am thinking he will transfer.

  78. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:24 am

I notice we almost never pick up first downs. Furthermore, we almost never pick up first downs….on first or second down. The first downs we have made have always come on 3rd down. Gone are the days of light’n opponents up. No, I don’t miss the run and shoot becaue Chow’s offense (back in the day) had the capability to light folks up too. It’s just not happening here in Hawaii nei. Ok wait. I might be missing some small parts of the run and shoot. Especially the parts where we scored touchdowns.

  83. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:31 am

Either that, or Graves needs to make a full time position switch so he can get some playing time at receiver. This double duty in practice is what the team needs just in case, but for him as a player, it is not fair. He needs full time snaps at one position or the other.

  85. kapakahi October 7, 2012 8:39 am

Watched the game again last night….breaking it down play-by-play…..and concluded that OL did a fair job in pass protection against SDSU. OL problems had more to do with the few bad and early snaps by Clarke.

JMHO that last night’s OL line-up (LT Muir, LG CWM, C Clarke, RG Lefotu, RT Milovale) showed promise. Didn’t see any sacks from SDSU Dlinemen…..just ‘backers. JMHO that problems with pass protection are still more schematic (i.e., coached assignments).

Also while redshirt frosh RB Will Gregory is doing a good job running the ball, executing his pass protection assignment to pick-up the blitzing ‘backer is definitely a weakness. With Joey still out, JMHO that would’ve been nice to see more of Sterling Jackson and/or John Lister….who both have more experience with pass protection techniques from the R&S schemes and should be better with executing their pass protection assignments….in the regular rotation.

    Howzit Everybody,

Man that was rough to watch. Thought going into the game we had a chance to win or atleast keep it respectable but man that was ugly. Right now it’s all about having pride as a player. Going out there and giving all you got. Yes guys like Paipai and Edwards played hard the whole game but we need just a little bit more. We need guys to be disciplined. We need guys to get nasty. We just need to see better.

I’m not going bad mouth anybody but the coaches and players need to look in the mirror and start showing everyone that they want it. If that means a change at quaterback, so be it. If it means a change at the wide receiver position, so be it. If it means tweeks in scheme, so be it. The team and coaches need to stop feeling bad for themselves and just start having pride. Go out there and get back to good old fashion broke your arse football.

  87. Chicken Grease October 7, 2012 8:43 am

You should always have room in your life for + + + POSITIVE THOUGHTS + + +. It’s not easy to have + + + positive thoughts + + + in the face of adversity, and nothing worth doing is easy (cliché, a Grease knows. But football is filled with clichés said by coaches and players who think they’re saying what they say for the first time in earth’s history, so, Grease joins the party in this instance).

You don’t stop just because of bad happenings. This is Jesus’s lesson, too.

Positive thinking is what makes life worth living.

And didn’t the oftly (for some reason) mentioned Manti (on this Warrior Beat alone) include this quote from The Count of Monte Cristo on his, uh, twitter or whatever page:

: Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you: as Albert Mondego, the man!

So, Manti thinks positively, too. Yeah, yeah, I know why he put in that quote, so save your explicatory rap.

Real losing is refusing to think and/or hate on thinking positively. Eek.

    Go to church.

    Go Warriors.

Rest in peace, “Peter” Frank Chi.

  89. helencalif October 7, 2012 8:58 am

This has been suggested to me so I am going to run this past the football coaches and ex-players on this blog.

It has been suggested that Chow does not want a QB controversy this year. Based upon high school football play (not a minute of college play in 3 years) Chow recruited a QB from Duke familiar with the pro-set program. After 2 practices, Chow announced he was the starter. Then he gave him a full ride scholarship for coming.

Chow will not play the QBs another HC recruited and he will not play these QBs because they might do better than the one he chose. He has already said publicly he is a one QB coach, which leaves Hawaii’s QB depth chart without a chance of showing what they could do.

As far as QBs go, this is a throw away season. He has already indicated that Graham will be the QB next year which means this year’s QB starter will probably be relegated to the bench next year.

So what happens when the only QB to get play time gets injured?

  90. SteveM October 7, 2012 9:16 am

    Good morning everyone!

Yesterday was the first game I’ve been able to watch since the USC game (been out to sea–literally and figuratively) 😐 I suppose I am too used to the Run ‘n Shoot. I cheered when our receivers made great catches and dismayed by the drops, which are magnified because there are fewer passes.

Running 2-3 yards up the middle in a cloud of dust doesn’t move the chains. No pass to set up the run–and no run to open up the passes. Predictable. But I think the team and coaching will improve.

Meanwhile, I am wondering about my binoculars for Aloha Stadium… bring the 7×50 one for watching the R&S or get a 12×50 one for those exciting dive plays…

  91. Warrior1978 October 7, 2012 9:24 am

As I posted yesterday, players and their families should not be publicly criticizing the coaches or their decisions. If I was Coach Chow, I would tell David Graves that if his family insists on criticizing my decisions, then they should find another program whose coach makes decisions they agree with.

  92. obachan October 7, 2012 9:27 am

Why in the world would Rolo want to come back? To what? – to an incompetent and arrogant Greenwood (hopefully won’t be here) and a meddling and equally incompetent BOR (unfortunately will still be here). I hope things works out for the team and frankly I don’t have enough football smarts to opine whether any given coach should stay or go. However, it seems that this situation was precipitated by upper admin and the BOR when they decided to get rid of Mac. I think Mac had the support of Donovan and Hinshaw. I suspect there was no affinity between Greenwood and Mac. Hinshaw left and Donovan wasn’t even included on the selection committee for the new coach. What kind of university doesn’t allow their AD to participate or be on the committee to select a new coach? That’s what you pay the man for. You don’t undercut him by taking away what should be his responsibility and judgment in this process. If he makes the “wrong” decision, you can at least hold him accountable. What we now have is an institution where no one is held accountable. One would think this would be “common sense” but at UH it has been well established that common sense is a sparse commodity. Teams of lawyers are hired to defend the unaccountable ones. Documents are redacted to further blur those involved. We have too many cooks running around at the luau producing a product that is increasingly unpalatable to the tax paying public.

  93. helencalif October 7, 2012 9:34 am

    #86 kev-1:

Let me expand on what you have said. Players make no decisions where they are going to play. Coach Chow makes the decisions on the positions the players practice and where they will play during the game. I think you are right, players need to practice and then play the same position during the game..

Not only did he introduce a different “scheme”, he has been moving some players around from position to position like checkers on a checkerboard.

Some have been moved from positions they knew to positions they don’t know. IMHO there is no way they can excel if they are being moved around and given two practice days to learn. If I am off base on this, add your 2-cents.Coach Chow said it himself during his Oct 1 press conference. After 10 months of being in charge, he is still trying to find out who is good at what. And that is a scary thought.

  94. Chicken Grease October 7, 2012 9:35 am

If it takes a losing season to imbue solid discipline into the Warrior football program, so be it.

It can also “be suggested” that discipline went to — yes, yes, despite winning records — the wayside under Jones (of whom a Grease has NO idea why he’s referred to as a decidedly elementary school nickname “JJ”) and, by extension, under McMackin.

And bled over. Just about two Warrior DUIs as Chow barely got off the plane coming back home to do this job.

I kiiiiiiinda’ think Chow would’ve had, at least, more #! Choices if it wasn’t for ONE of those DUIs.

Don’t blame Chow as you’re praising past coaches who let certain things go when it came to the players.

Because all of you criticizing Chow had a perfect record in YOUR first year in your respective jobs. Share the part where you walked on water, please.

Chow has a wealth of coaching experience. Know it. Respect it. Some of you know football soooooooo much that you yourself are head coaches. And would know EXACTLY what do to get a winning first season if given the opportunity to coach Div’ 1. Yeah. You know it all.

You know it all about football, even beyond a discrete phone call that includes you mouthing the words, “hi, yeah, I like take . . .” “Put me in fo’ . . .”

    Right?

Are there any pass plays to combat the blitz instead of just going back to running plays, as ST described Chow’s reaction to San Diego State’s defensive blitz in today’s newspaper article.

San Diego St. was supposed to have had a weak pass defense as well as Nevada, I think.

  101. postmanke October 7, 2012 10:06 am

Chow doesnt like QB controversy, distractions, etc.. likes to stick with numero uno no matter what.. This is what I would think DMK would ask Chow if he were ever called up for a Head Coach Accountability hearing – which by the way, i think should be standard protocol if you get 3 straight blown out losses.

is this your own philosophy? if not, who is the idiot that gave you this idea? and it what decade was this?

Is it true that in sports, it is natural to believe the more competition you have the more depth you build?

How do you ensure that complacency does not set in if your starting QB is not at risk of losing his job?

    Are you complacent?

When you watch tapes do you ever feel that you may be building an uncritical satisfaction system?

Im not hyper critical of Chows system. It can work if you have super talented athletes. they will play thru struggles and be able to turn it around. Carson Palmer. but you need more times than not you need competition vs controversy. you need battles vs distractions. let the players step up no matter what.

Hey Chicken Grease, respect is earned. The product that Chow (his offense, his defense) has put on the field hasnt earned anybody’s respect so far. Again, i feel sorry for the players, they were in a system that gave them a chance to be successful. We have talent, Chow isnt using it the right way. He is so stubborn believing his system is the only way. We tried it hear before (von appen) and look at the results. Not really hard to see why it took 40 years to get a head job and there was an obvious reason why Schroder didnt play at Duke, it if you need to be reminded why, just watch the game tape. Play Graves!

  105. Garret October 7, 2012 10:20 am

I agree with kapakahi about how the OL did a decent job in the SDSU game. There were a LOT of times when Schroder dropped back and he had amazing protection, much more time than the 3 second standard. However, Schroder held on to the ball instead of throwing it to someone or throwing it away–maybe there was nobody open, I was focused on the OL and not the receivers.

SDSU blitzed a LOT during the game and most of them were picked up. Normally a team that blitzed that much would be hurt by the offense when they didn’t get to the QB, but UH didn’t burn the blitzes so SDSU kept blitzing.

And like I’m saying, respectfully, people like YOU know better. (Not only addressing you, GA) and that’s why YOU folks have enough expertise. To. Coach. Riiiiiiight?

I see an old man (not Chow, yuk yuks) suddenly fall down on the sidewalk . . . I don’t help him up because I haven’t yet earned his respect (I certainly wouldn’t have time to)???? I don’t give to charity because I know some of that charity includes helping ex-cons, who committed some of the most heinous crimes to humanity and also includes, let’s face it, people too lazy to work??? That doesn’t earn my respect. But I still give to that (and I won’t mention the name or acronym except to say that it’s an umbrella organization. No, it’s not the Umbrella Corporation).

Just show some intellectual honesty. Be clear. It’s not about “earning” anything for you folks. You just hate Coach Chow. So, say it. Don’t do all this “he should” “coaching staff should” just because you’ve loved d’a game since you was small keed. “Ah, I get gooooood mem’ries me and my faddah t’row football aftah we watch the game.” Played ALL of the NFL Maddens. About comparing Bill Walsh’s first two years as the 49er head coach to Norm Chow and the University of Hawaii…

While Bill Walsh did not create the west coast offense, he tinkered with it and he perfected it. He also had a blank check from the Niner owners to recruit the best of the best — players and supportive coaching staff.

And he had some help from a guy named Joe Montana who came to the 49ers in 1979 (Walsh’s first year).

I don’t think Norm Chow is Bill Walsh.

I don’t think UH has the funds to recruit the 4-star players Chow needs to pull off a pro-set offense.

And I certainly don’t think this year’s starting QB is a Joe Montana.

  113. spisskyhrad October 7, 2012 10:50 am

“chicken grease” — you said “wealth of coaching experience” — agreed — that Hawaii is his first head coaching assignment and the administration that selected him — well we all know what a mess that is — doesn’t it trigger some thought that maybe there was a reason this was his first head coaching assignment?

Unless you are just really a positive sort of person — you sound almost like LDS true — rather that Warrior true.

  114. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 10:56 am

Fans, do not lose perspective of what 2012 was suppose to be… UH had to replace at least 11 starters (before the injuries started piling up) who graduated and replace Moniz at QB. 2012 was going to be a rough year no matter who’s coaching. Also remember that UH went 5-7 in 2011 with an experienced QB and experienced offensive line and a much weaker schedule than 2012.

I think fans are expecting too much of Chow in his first year. New offensive system, new QB, and before the injuries: 4 new starting o-line, 3 new starting d-line, 2 new starting LB. Not to mention that 80% of the roster is still McMackin’s recruits.

Chow has been forced to play a lot of young players that just aren’t ready to play at the D1 level because of the graduation of 11 starters and now the injuries. As Chow gets his players in things will get better. UH actually has some very exciting players for 2013.

Taylor Graham is a big time QB talent eligible next season. Will Gregory looks like he could be a star. Mike Edwards is a fantastic CB. Chow received a big time QB commitment from Aaron Zwahlen. As Chow gets more recruits to phase out Mack’s players, UH will start to improve starting 2013.

Think you need to expand more on what you’re getting at. I think almost who comes from Hawaii — lots end up going to other places to follow their dream/get experience — have dreams of going back home to live, work, contribute. Is THAT what you’re getting at?

It’s known that Chow’s contract is only for, what, 3-5 years? We have to assume it might only last that long. Think he’s the right disciplinarian type after the wild west that was under Jones and, by extension, McMackin )yes, again, despite many wins and lack thereof in the final years, both intensified and numerical).

So with the result being a forgone conclusion I felt I could more accurately assess the strengths and weaknesses of the team. And I think all of us here love the Warriors. So let’s dispense with the trolling accusations business.

Basically, the biggest flaw last night was the horrible preparation by Kaumeyer. Is he a personal friend of the Chow family? To let a QB scamper for four TDs, you’ve got to wonder whether he ever bothered to watch films of SDSU. Did he ever plan for this eventuality? Does he understand the concept of misdirection as a tactic? Containment? Staying in your lanes? This isn’t meant as sarcasm. You really have to wonder.

It did not appear to be the case. Even Todd Richardson, the ESPN announcer, noted the high school-level reaction to one of SDSU’s many misdirections. Every Hawaii defensive player got suckered by a simple move. No containment. QB’s off to another TD. I watched UH play for twelve years now, and I don’t think I have ever seen this complete lack of clue. These easy scores on broken plays by an okay QB are huge demoralizers for the offense, which from time to time looked like it might be standing on its feet. And it’s not the players, it the coaches at fault. If Kaumeyer does not realize the urgency of this matter, I’m not sure he’s salvageable at his position.

Note to Coach Chow: If you have a fast, athletic QB, even if you are a very ordinary mid-major, you have the opportunity to break one every now and then. And their QB ate us up. The expected SDSU stud RB Muaem didn’t even start hitting his stride until after the damage had been done. There wasn’t anything really wonderful about the SDSU offense. The QB was not especially accurate, and their receivers were not especially good at getting separation. More and more of our mid-major opponents are using the athletic, running QB factor. Usually running the option, or similar plays. It’s becoming the new normal.

Somebody has to explain the concept of “opportunism” at the mid-major level to Chow. His instincts are all correct if he was still with the Titans or at USC. From what I saw, our o-line actually performed fairly well, and Gregory, once he gets a rhythm is excellent at penetration and advancing the ball as he’s tackled. I even saw Schroeder get his speed, timing, and accuracy going better. Maybe Chow is on to something with this guy in that regard. But we still don’t have the personnel on the field to take advantage of the precious opportunities afforded us. Especially with the defensive leadership being out to lunch for the entire game.

In the context of our uneven talent, and many injuries you need a QB with spontaneous athleticism at that position. Maybe the annointed starter for next year has those qualities. We need a QB who can do to our mid-major opponents *what the SDSU QB did to us*. Everybody’s getting guys like that. Having a mobile, athletic QB is a force multiplier. It adds an entirely new weapon that the opponent can’t plan for. There are risks to having an option QB. Moniz almost got decapitated against USC. But I agree with those suggesting Graves; at least you would have more playmaking opportunities. Unfortunately, now it would be like giving lambs to the slaughter, since I doubt he has received any preparation for this eventuality. He’d be set up to fail.

  123. madeinhawaii October 7, 2012 12:04 pm

Just seems like Coach Chow isn’t concerned with winning or losing, but is using this season’s games as practice with full pads sessions. And, with all the mounting injuries, next season, the bulk of returners will have had lots of game time experience.

  124. Chicken Grease October 7, 2012 12:08 pm

I think a lot of the problem with football criticism nowadays is use of the type of chiché’d “ate up” and “decapitated” expressions. Just a lot of “I no like get anyone in trouble, but . . .” (umm hmm. So sincere). From the ESPN overpaid “why do we REALLY need ‘football analysts’? The game is NOT that hard to understand” to posts like this. Yawn. All heard before. All reeks of “I’ll school the WORLD about this!!!!” Also reminds me of the Burke (the Paul Reiser character) from Aliens.

And, yeah. Many of you are “still fans” but . . . no faith.

There’s not enough of this kind of commentary:

    Former UH Athlete:

    October 7th, 2012 at 10:56 am

  125. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 12:18 pm

For those asking for QB change, just be carefuk of what you wish for. There’s a reason why Chow hasn’t changed QB and that’s not because he’s stubborn. It’s because the Higgins and Graves haven’t shown they can run the offense.

Do I think Graves can run a little? Sure, but that doesn’t solve the pass protection problems from the o-line or solve the problem with the receivers not being able to get open.

I just re-watched the game again (yeah I’m sick, but I’m a former QB prior to attending UH, and it’s my hobby), and HERE’S WHAT I SAW ON PASS PLAYS ONLY:

    1st Half:

1st Drive – 1. Accurate throw (DROPPED); 2. quick pressure on QB (incomplete)

2nd Drive – 3. 3 step drop, nobody open (incomplete, possible pass interference).

3rd Drive – 4. 3 step drop, nice throw completed with very tight coverage; 5. SACK (Gregory missed blitz pickup); 6. Sean throws to Stutz on a corner route, but he’s not open and ball safely falls incomplete; 7. After false start, 3rd and 24, Sean rolls right, Gregory can’t maintain his block and a hurried throw goes incomplete for Stutz, who’s covered tightly

4th Drive – 8. 3 step drop, immediate pressure, #86 (Cofer) missed his block, causing errant throw (incomplete and Sean takes a big hit)

5th Drive – 9. short drop, Sean throws a perfect pass on time to Orstrowski (sloppy route) complete for 1st Down; 10. Rollout left, Gregory throws an excellent cut block to free the throwing lane, perfect throw low and away to T. Davis for TOUCHDOWN! Perfect execution.

6th Drive – 11. 3rd&7, Blitz picked up well, Sean throws perfect ball on time to Stutz for first down; 12. Flea flicker, poorly blocked, hurried throw gets to Davis for first down (Sean takes a hit); 13. Quick hitch to the right flat completed to Davis, another perfect throw; 14. Sean has time to throw, good protection, looks down the middle, Orstrowski is double covered, looks at Stutz but he’s covered and Sean safely throws away incomplete; 15. Half roll to right, pressured quickly, hurried throw broken up. (no time to scan for targets, Sean takes another hit); 16. 4th&11, Sean drops back, #77 Milovale whiffs on his block, Sean throws beauty under pressure and Orstrowski DROPS the would be touchdown. Perfect throw by Sean, and then gets hit again.

7th Drive – 16. 5 wide, bunch right formation, SDSU blitz is unblocked, Sean makes perfect throw to hot route (Stutz) completed but then fumbles, turnover. Sean gets crushed by unbocked LB.

    2nd Half:

8th Drive – 17. Quick WR screen completed to Stutz, Orstrowski misses block and play is stuffed; 18. Sean drops back, has time, makes perfect throw to Bright on the post route, first & goal

    9th Drive – 18. Sean drops, good protection, throws… pass interference; 19. Sean drops, good protection, throws deep for Davis, nice ball but Davis doesn’t have the speed to track it down, incomplete;

10th Drive – 20. 3rd&5, SDSU brings hard blitz, Sean throws to Stutz and broken up. Stutz ran a lazy comeback route and didn’t fight for ball.

11th Drive – 21. After penalty, Quick WR screen to Bright, Harding misses block and gets stuffed; 22. WTF?!? center snaps the ball before Sean was ready, Sean recovers and does the smart thing and throws ball away incomplete; 23. 3rd&20, Sean drops back, pocket collapsing, nobody open down field, Sean dumps off to Stutz for short gain.

    12th Drive – 24. Quick WR screen to Davis, Stutz lays a good block, 9 yd gain; 25. Sean short drop, throws perfect ball to Bright on the slant, DROPPED;

After reviewing the tape and evaluating, Schroeder did ok. He does a pretty good job of throwing to the correct WR and goes through progressions when he has time to throw. All the bad throws were all under heavy pressure. He throws the ball away vs forcing into coverage, which is a good thing (hurts the stats, but no stupid throws). Again, dropped passes were a problem especially the Orstrowski drop which would have been 7 points (I think that’s the 3rd TD Orstrowski has dropped this year). I noticed that Chow called a lot of 3 step drops to get the ball out quickly and help the o-line, but WRs often can’t shake their coverage and get open, which forces Schroeder to hold the ball too long.

Overall, I don’t think Schroeder’s play warrants a QB change. It doesn’t solve the o-line issues and lack of talent at WR. Again, I am only assessing the QB and the passing game.

In other news, today’s Star-Advertiser front page story by Ferd Lewis and Craig Gima answered my question about the size of Greenwood’s golden parachute if fired. Not bad, 1 year severance and 9 months sabbatical… under $1 million if canned. Doesn’t sound like much when you consider the consultant and PR bills might decrease while credibility starts recovering.

Save more money if this is possible: appoint Virginia Hinshaw as interim President… or stretch it a bit and appoint JD, since he already supposedly works there in admin… 👿

  128. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 12:29 pm

    #125;

I think Kaumeyer needs to step it up, but I’m giving him a pass this year because the of the injury situation. He’s having to pull practice squad players into action now. By the late 3rd-4th quarter vs SDSU, the defense was completely gassed because of the lack of depth.

Once Chow gets a full recruiting class in, we’ll get a better assessment of Kaumeyer. If UH has similar problems next year, I’d be all for firing Kaumeyer, but this year’s front 7 was short on talent before the injuries.

UH has way too many newcomers/underclassmen playing this year because of injuries and lack of overall talent in the upperclassmen.

UH has take their lumps this year and start moving forward in 2013… Chow has some exciting recruits that will be ready in 2013, plus a full recruiting class.

  129. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 12:35 pm

    #129:

Don’t forget that June Jones went 1-11 his first year at SMU and plenty of SMU alumni/boosters were questioning the hire. As Jones implemented his changes, and one full recruiting class, he led SMU to 3 straight bowl games.

Believe, me UH doesn’t have the budget to get a better coach for the money and getting Chow for $800k+ was a steal.

80% of this year’s roster is still McMackin’s recruits.

This is not Pop Warner football with little kids and volunteer coaches.”

    Never said it was:

“If your kid is playing a sport and they have a losing record and look horrible, do you stop going to their games? Do you boo your kid and their coaches? Out there, on the field is someones kid. Out there trying to teach and coach is someones, father, brother, uncle or friend. Shift your “stinking thinking!” a bit and you might see things differently.”

It is an amateur sport played by student athletes who are someone’s child. I understand your frustration, but these issues have a way of working itself out. College football is as much an education as it is a competition. If an student gets a scholarship its not only because of his playing ability, but its also because of his character.

This is not Pop Warner nor is it the NFL. Imua Warriors!

  131. lava October 7, 2012 12:49 pm

For you Chow supporters, the damage would be far worse than the statistics show except for one very important point — the games are over by halftime. SDSU up 35-7 at half. They make the adjustments and we have no chance of coming back. USC was up 35-0. Nevada was up by 17, but I guess that was to close, and they outscored us 21-0 in the 3rd.

Chow is a joke. His offensive is pathetic. Very predictable, very slow to develop.

Former UH Athlete, you of all people should know, if you were a college athlete, don’t blame the players. Never blame the players. Pathetic.

Recall the Chow Time t-shirts, and issue the Blow Chow t-shirts. Chow makes me want to puke!

  135. gobows October 7, 2012 1:30 pm

#134 – finally somebody has the balls to say what they see happening on the field. coach chow is trying to run big boy football with small time players. hawaii doesn’t have the big boys (nfl size) on the ol like he had at byu. jj was successful because he threw the ball, threw the ball, and threw the ball some more. in the lavell edwards era, byu was most successful throwing the ball. if hawaii is to run a pro style offense, then it will be fred von appen all over again. the ’92 team was great under paul johnson’s option. the best games hawaii has had against byu was when they passed the ball like crazy. hawaii running a pro style offense is equivalent to damien running the ball in the ILH = losing records. coach chow should rethink his game planning and implement more passing if he’s truly trying to win games. right now he’s worse than mack. hawaii needs dave aranda and nick rolovich back at dc & oc.

Still can’t figure out our defense. How it was supposed to be our bright spot to absent on the field is so really difficult to accept.

  139. gobows October 7, 2012 1:41 pm

3 straight games hawaii is unable to stop the run. worst defense in the nation, worst offense in the nation, at least hawaii has another game against an fcs school = 2-10 record. shouldn’t be too hard for chow to improve in his second year.

I am not really sure how McMackin and Co. recruited but somehow or another Moniz came out of nowhere to be one of the most effective QB’s Hawaii has ever had. The offensive line is like a recruiting trip to Australia. However they did it they got people working together and fighting for a team. MaMackin was pretty hard to look at with that bloated look and raspy voice but last season might have been something to behold had not Moniz gone down with injury.

This blog was all over McMackin back then. Everyone wanted him to retire or just go away. Well he did and now we have a measurably worse situation than I could have ever imagined. This situation is really a function of the administration, which defines the word “obtuse”.

“Chicken grease” — the word respect is not one I use carelessly. Their is respect for an office and there is respect for authority. But like Clint Eastwood said to the empty chair “if you can’t get the job done, you gotta let the guy go”.

Let’s see how the season progresses. Maybe things will change. But most of the points I have noticed in this blog about — players, play selection and strategy seem to be pretty valid. Like I said “get a clue…”.

The pre-season activities looked really good, and I hoped they would inspire the team with a good work ethic.

Keeping June Jones’ 1-11 first season at SMU, let’s give Chow the benefit of the doubt. Let’s give him the year to work out the kinks. Hopefully the second season will show excellent results.

  152. Manoa October 7, 2012 2:32 pm

The SDSU coaches and players are dissing Chow and Kaumeyer in an area Chow wants to highlight for recruiting and he is competing for the players recruited by SDSU.

The head coach said he wished every team played a proset because it is so easy to defend. Another coach said that to make SDSU’s proset harder to defend, they added spread offense plays– the sweeps, tosses, and the zone read which the ran. But they said they did not need those things to fool Hawaii’s defense because Hawaii left the QB uncovered. And Kaumeyer admitted that they did not account for the QB in some of their pass coverage schemes. SDSU QB sees pass coverage, he knows he can run and no one is covering him– that is why he made it look so easy.

    That should not be happening.

  153. Garret October 7, 2012 2:47 pm

SDSU was pretty banged up too going into the UH game.

CB starter (Wade) was injured so a sophomore CB made his first start in college football.

WR (Lockett) didn’t play due to an ankle injury last week.

DE (Onuoha) couldn’t play so his backup had his second career start.

LG (Gordon) has a foot injury so his backup had his first start this year.

LB Tenhaeff was playing with a broken right hand, you could see the protective casing around his hand.

  154. Garret October 7, 2012 2:48 pm

The attendance was 50,586, but I figure 5k to 10k of them arrived around halftime and were trying to find open seats on the other side of the stadium because they wanted a better view of the fireworks.

  157. Garret October 7, 2012 2:55 pm

    Manoa,

I took the comments a little differently. SDSU *cannot* defend against the spread offense this season, it has been shown over and over. SDSU’s head coach didn’t want his defenders to get overconfident after the game because UH was running a different type of offense and SDSU has to figure out how to stop spread offenses.

    SDSU’s D summary:

UH Pro Set: 14 points, 173 total yards

The week before against Fresno: 52 points, *655* total yards

The week before that against SJSU: 38 points, 367 total yards

The week before that against D-IAA North Dakota: 41 points, 489 total yards

You can see why their head coach still doesn’t feel too confident about his defense. Nevada and Boise State are going to pass and run all over their D and if their D doesn’t improve then their D won’t do well in 3 or so of their other games.

  158. Garret October 7, 2012 2:59 pm

Manoa did make a good point–SDSU recruits against UH in Southern California. SDSU’s head coach has an incentive in speaking negatively against UH because recruits and their families read the articles and see his statements on TV.

Instead of negative recruiting where a school talks behind the other school’s back and trashes the school and/or its coaches when they talk directly to the recruit, this was an example of public negative recruiting. I don’t like it and hope that UH doesn’t use that tactic, but I bet it does work on some recruits.

And the sad thing is, knowing they’ll never have a job in it, they lament it the entirety of their lives Tmove ON for Pete’s sake) . . . and that lament might turn into negativity (not positivity 🙂 ) . . . talk about “undefendable.”

    9th Drive – 18. Sean drops, good protection, throws… pass interference; 19. Sean drops, good protection, throws deep for Davis, nice ball but Davis doesn’t have the speed to track it down, incomplete;

    12th Drive – 24. Quick WR screen to Davis, Stutz lays a good block, 9 yd gain; 25. Sean short drop, throws perfect ball to Bright on the slant, DROPPED;

I think the same ones who pushed Mack out (Fred and Dave) should start writing articles if chow doesn’t change his offense to the strength of players we should fire him! And as fans we should start chanting graves during games when SS is doing horrible which is always! By having a mobile qb we take one man out of coverage to spy and open the windows jus alittle more so our receivers get some seperation

    Carlsbad Costco gas prices:

    Last Sunday: $4.09/gallon

    This Sunday (today): $4.59/gallon

A couple of refinery fires in California really caused gas prices to jump. The sad thing is that they say that they might get one of the refineries running again tomorrow, but of course prices won’t come down for quite some time even when the supply meets the demand again.

Supposedly two female athletes and one male in mens volleyball.

Last year was Natasha Kai, Brooke Wilkins, and Patsy Mink (for Title IX).

  168. Shoko October 7, 2012 3:15 pm

What I found interesting about last nights game was when Chow went with the pistol offense. Didn’t he say in the Nevada pre-game press conference that when he visited Ault couple years ago to gain insight to the pistol, he still couldn’t figure it out enough to implement that at UCLA?

I’m thinking since Army was using the pistol and put up 282 yard against SDSU, the pistol might be able to establish a decent running game against the Aztecs.

  169. Shoko October 7, 2012 3:20 pm

Miah has the most receptions (20) for 181 yards. Last year he had 65 receptions for 687 yards. However, he is a good point guard, too.

    . . .

I don’t think anyone can trust you when I comes to the topic of respect. After all, you made fun of the coach’s last name, which is simply not warranted; let’s go to your comment (# 113), above:

    spisskyhrad:

chicken grease — you say discipline — an interesting comment when considering the DUI players from this summer and the bunch Bowwowchow kicked off the team on his arrival in January for supposed discciplinary reasons — in short — hypocrite — may be added to the stubborn — arrogant comments —

So, uh, when it comes to the topic of “respect”? You “don’t use it carelessly”? Making fun of the coach’s last name, yet we’re supposed to believe you have a good handle on “respect.” I mean, based on this, how am I supposed to put stock in your assessment of ” But most of the points I have noticed in this blog about — players, play selection and strategy seem to be pretty valid.”? Answer, I can’t. Who can? I don’t see anyone going “rah, rah, you TELL him, spisskyhrad” (and seeing such endorsement from here on would simply be “after the fact”).

So, a Grease is not the one who needs a clue, ha ha.

How many other posters are supporting your pejorative of Coach Chow’s last name? Respect, huh? Riiiiiight.

Will ignore your posts, spisskyhrad, from here on (which is what I should do for other posts too! [rimshot!!!!!!]. Just not worth a Grease’s time.

Why does a losing season make some of you soooo miserable?

  176. obachan October 7, 2012 4:03 pm

Winning brings everyone together and losing produces critique and diversity of opinion. Everyone is free to express their own opinion whether or not others agree. I’m reminded of that on almost a daily basis as our soldiers keep sacrificing their lives for our freedom of speech. It’s bad enough that Afghans who are supposed to be the ones who we’re “saving” keep killing our troops. Wasn’t too long ago when training camp was at joint base Hickam Pearl Harbor. Good to keep the big picture in mind and regain some perspective.

  177. gigi-hawaii October 7, 2012 4:05 pm

It’s one thing to state an opinion, but quite another to levy insults. We don’t need the latter.

  179. Moocher October 7, 2012 4:07 pm

    #128 EXACTLY!!!

graves goes in and what??? o-line still can’t block, running back still does not pickup and maintain blocks, receivers still miss blocks, receivers still can’t get open, he’s a quarterback who does not get it yet…OHHHH, i’m sorry but graves can run.

people…graves came in as the number 1 qb…he could not hold it, got passed by, others proved to be more capable and pretty much thats it…end of story.

graves needs to fit designed plays. OR, designed plays needs to fit graves…and that’s up to chow.

and let us not forget one thing, we now know what the rest of the football world was right in when they said the run and shoot was a system that made just about ANY quarterback look good. where is timmy, where is rolo, where is robinson, where is graunke, where is moniz…anyone of them putting up those numbers in the NFL, CFL, arena at best maybe?

chows “system” will not make “any” quarterback look good…therefore, you need a specific type of quarterback who can do specific things while clicking upstairs. put that in context and shroeder is the best we have.

funny…i remember a time no one liked glenn freitas. he could pass but cold not run. i remember a time when we did not like tipton…he could pass but he cold not run…what got us to love those quarterbacks was when the line held, receivers caught balls, and defense held. hmmmmmmm???

so does that mean when the line does not hold, receivers drop balls, and defense does not hold we not like our quarterback because he is not mobile???

    funny aren’t we? 🙂

Interesting article in SA about the upcoming BOR meeting in executive session; “Regents face tough choice over future of UH leader” by Ferd Lewis and Craig Gima

It includes a sabbatical cost concerns about possible resignation/firing of the President (below) that sound remote considering information from the Senate hearings. The BOR policy, as I recall, requires 6 years of service, pays out at tenured faculty salary, and has a duration of 1 month per year of service. Since she started in the position in 2009, unless I am missing something, she wouldn’t even be eligible for a sabbatical until 2015. Since the President was the one that negotiated the exceptions in the Chancellor Hinshaw deal (only 5 years of service, Chancellor pay, 9 months sabbatical), that doesn’t seem like a reasonable precedent. That said, it is true that she could “ask” for it.

“Greenwood’s resignation or firing would add even more to the cost. Besides her $427,512 salary, Greenwood could also ask for a 10-month paid sabbatical, something that was granted to UH chancellors who left the university and former UH President David McClain.”

  187. NinjaWarriorTurtle October 7, 2012 4:47 pm

Coach Chow’s annual salary is $550K/3-year contract. Give Chow a few more games before asking for his head. I thought there were positive improvements both sides of the ball. I further believe Chow needs to continue with the running plays to allow the O-line to get better at run blocking, a skill long forgotten with the run n’ shoot. And Schroeder’s numbers are decent. Would be better if not for dropped passes.

  188. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 5:01 pm

For those who want Chow out, you better start donating money to pay for his buyout. I did a little research and found the contract for Chow… If UH fires Chow, the contract states that UH must pay Chow in full through year 4 and $200k for year 5. Chow’s base salary is $550,000, so UH would need $2.4 million to fire Chow.

Getting Chow at $550,000 base is incredibly cheap and he gave UH a discount because he’s getting to coach at home. Remember, McMackin was making $1.1Million/year base. UH was retarded and didn’t put a buyout clause, so UH had to pay McMackin the full $5.5 million on his contract even after firing him.

Two questions for the anti-Chow people:

    1. If not Chow, who was UH going to hire for $550,000?

    2. Considering UH had to replace Moniz at QB, along with 11 starters graduated and gone (including 4 OL, 3 DL, and 2 LBs)… What was your honest pre-season win total for UH in 2012 (regardless of who’s coaching)?

After looking at the returning roster, I thought I was being generous with 5-7 for 2012.

189, cee808: Yeah, the Greenwood-may-ask-for-a-sabbatical thing is worrisome. Hopefully the BOR remembers that just asking doesn’t guarantee receiving. Also, the attorney that has looked the best so far is JD’s, so perhaps if UH is going to retain outside counsel YET AGAIN it might want to retain him before she does.

Lawyers out there, a hypothetical question. If someone goes before one’s employer and wants legal representation, he/she has to pay for said representation, right?

Not complaining about losing games we expected to lose.. complaining about how badly we got beat. How poorly we are performing on defense as well as offense. At the start of the season, I expected losses against USC and BYU… I thought we would play Nevada closer since we were at home and had not lost here in recent memory, and I thought SDSU was a possible win. But we got trashed, spanked and yanked all over the place. We didn’t get to vote on a new coach.. and if we did.. I don’t know if Chow would have won… I had Rush and Koetter as my first two picks.. I wanted to see us keep Rolo, at the very least.

Ah, Former UH Athlete. You were doing so well :). You’re still my hero of the day, you and shoko, though.

Look . . . uh . . . Taxpayer (yes, with a capital “T”) still goes a ways toward UH coaches, you know? If it doesn’t go to pay directly to the coaches, taxpayer dollars — and folks paying for tuition — inevitably go toward paying all the facilities and (A Grease ain’t going list ’em all) assorted ancilliaries needed by the team that coach coaches.

And tell me UH coaches don’t say stuff like, “this is a good win for the state and the people of Hawaii” or likeness thereof. Surely as a former UH athlete, you’d want your coach to say, and mean, stuff like that. You don’t want your coach — or the program — looking so elitist coming from a public. Riiiiiiiiight? 😉

  208. islandman October 7, 2012 6:52 pm

Don’t forget, even with Mack, Rolo and Aranda, UH lost 4 of its last 5 games last year going from 5-3 to 6-7 . And also lost earlier to a supposedly weak UNLV 20-40 . The scores were closer though.

In all honesty there is a loss of excitement watching this new offensive scheme on the field…The Defense is a lot more aggressive which is why we’re probably out of position sometimes…reminds me of when Glanville was D-Co he got the players fired up but they were over aggressive and out of place just like this defense tends to be against the run…The lack of turnovers caused by our defense also doesn’t help getting a few turnovers a game would help our momentum a ton…but hey I’m just an observer

    Rolo are you kidding!!!!

    Chow is our man!

Who made this F’n schedule ??????

  220. Moocher October 7, 2012 7:27 pm

Chow has said he is demanding. From my experiences working with many leaders in business, military, and sports, with all demanding people there are three stages they will go through:

    1. You have standards or even raise standards. you will not change.

    2. You lower your standards or expectations to what you have to work with.

    3. You replace personnel to get to your standard.

    Regarding #1.

This is not a perfect world to fit a perfect ideology. After a certain time, demanding people will realize they are not getting 100% of what they saw in mind. Demanding people will realize certain things must be compromised to achieve the main goal.

    Regarding #2.

To achieve the goal, demanding people are still people who want to be in charge and succeed. They will realize some goals are not yet attainable and lower the bar and or will make changes in their thinking to give people the best chance possible to reach the goal. Nonetheless, one thing that will not be compromised is morals and ethics. A demanding person will insist people think alike and act alike in line with an image or goal.

    Regarding #3.

Once those changes are made, a demanding person will “weed out” people that do not fit or are not in line with the goal. Once that demanding person has shaped his people, maximized their strengths and limited their weaknesses, he will once again raise the bar. Any new people coming into this unit must now be at the level of the unit and must grow with the unit.

Looking at this way, in my opinion Chow is in the end phase of #1 and entering phase #2. In my opinion, we a ways away from phase 3. Believing this and as it relates to sports there is another issue.

The Coach’s goal and the fans goal in the first stages are different. Of course each wants to win. However, I speak about goals. The coach’s goal is to implement a new offense. The fan’s goal is to be entertained with wins. If we are lucky as with JJ, wins happened right away. Although, it wasn’t really until 2003-2007 that his system clicked with consistency. The difference right now is again, with JJ wins came fast, tapered off, then came with consistency and grew.

Chow just isn’t getting the wins at fans pace…but perhaps he is in the overall goal.

    Only time will tell.

  221. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 7:30 pm

    @kev-1 I didn’t say you were.

I have noticed the “Chow was a terrible hire; he don’t know what he’s doing” crowd won’t answer my questions. I’ll I asked was for them to provide the “better” alternative to back up their opinion and what they expected for 2012.

Obviously I don’t think anyone believed UH would look this bad, but I didn’t have high expectations this year after looking at how many starters UH lost to graduation, the talent returning and the change in offense.

Someone posted earlier a YouTube of a post-game interview w/Chow in the Qualcomm tunnel right after the game and one thing he said really surprised me… Chow said that he’s had to simplify the playbook for the players in the past few weeks. This means that some of the guys aren’t putting in the work off the field to learn the offense. I’m sure Chow’s full playbook is huge (like most NFL caliber coordinators), and being his 1st year, there’s not enough time to implement everything. What surprises me is that the returning players, about 80% of the team, got the playbook during spring meetings/practice. Learning a playbook is on the players to do it on their own time. Coach McMackin was a very laid back personality, which rubbed off on this players and I think it contributed to the sloppy play that eventually led to his firing. I suspect that the laid back work ethic among Mack’s recruits is part of the reason why Chow has had to cut the playbook down.

Several people mentioned that the playcalling has been “boring.” From what Chow said in that interview, we got our answer why. Chow can’t get creative with playcalling if the players don’t know the plays.

Dang, one of my posts is being moderated… The post had YouTube links for Taylor Graham and Aaron Zwahlen. UH’s future starting QB’s

Since the post is getting moderated, you can YouTube search “Taylor Graham Film Part 1” – there are 3 parts

youtube Search “Aaron Zwahlen” — there are several videos. Chow looks like he beat out Wazzu, Boise St, BYU and Texas Tech to get him. Zwahlen’s father played under Chow back when he coached at BYU.

  223. papajoe2 October 7, 2012 7:56 pm

One play that I didn’t really care for, was a supposedly quick pass to the receiver on or just in back of the line of scrimmage, close to the sideline. We must have ran that play around a half dozen times. Did it ever work? That play should be a quick developing play but it takes too long for it to happen. The ball is not zipped in and the motion of the qb takes time too. Nobody is really out there to block the db too. Maybe scrap the play. I know it should open the middle by going wide, but since it isn’t working, if the db is playing off the receiver, then a quick slant might work.

  224. Kapahulukine October 7, 2012 7:56 pm

    Former UH Athlete:

Your comments are astute as usual, but they don’t explain the pop warner level mistakes Kaumeyer’s players keep making in either a) over reacting to most screens, draws, bootlegs, and b) letting QBs run for TDs on broken plays. I’m not a coach or an expert, but all you have to do is be a living, breathing human to see these issues. It’s almost like Kaumeyer’s coaching consists of telling players “go chase the ball.”

Also, you mentioned that Chow needed time to get his recruits before he could be judged. So far the only mentionable ones are the two QBs, Zwahlen and Graham. I don’t know how they are going to perform, but I assume they have more athleticism than our QB. Meaning, they can keep plays alive by running, throwing on the run, etc. It wasn’t his fault, but it seems like Chow had to go on a recruiting binge in a hurry, and ended up with a bunch of two-stars. Not saying they won’t end up being great players. But not sure about “wait till he gets his recruits in” part.

You ARE new here, hero Former UH Athlete.

Save your proverbial ammo’; there’ll be more anti-Chow posts ’til . . . end of year and beyond, probably?

A Grease likes to think of the naysayers as well, sad. They wish they were ON the field every Friday or Saturday. Certainly every Sunday. They haven’t really gotten over this lament. They’ve never fully moved on.

That’s why they have so much negativity. Think they know more than the coach . . . yet they don’t have the proven skills to even complete 1/2 a resumé, so to speak, to get their foot in the door.

And they keep on wishin’. Secretly.

  226. Warrior Dave October 7, 2012 7:59 pm

Blogs are so wonderful. It allows everyone to express their opinions. However, the downside is that anonymously, people can put on a braver front standing behind a curtain. And post under several different names to make their opinions appear more of the norm verses the exception.

I too am a frustrated hardcore UH fan. I have/had doubts whether this pro set offense can work only because I wonder if we can recruit at the level necessary level to be successful.

I am willing to “embrace” the change over to Coach Chow and his philosophies and try my best to remain supportive. Yes it may take several years but continued improvement, maybe not week to week with the rash of continued injuries. But baby steps like making a tackle and being in position to make a play.

Good luck Warriors this week. I will be there to support you!

    Welcome Too Hawaii!!!

When we have crooked politicians like upper campus and fans that want positive results like immediately, we tend to overlook what we have already and what we could have had that really didn’t need fixing.

The University’s mistake was letting coach Mac go too soon instead of letting him finish off his last year as head coach. Chow is a great coach and would have been great coming in next year to replace coach Mac if need be, but this rush, rush transition is a down fall and just flat out worst than years past. Through observation on the hearing and with continuous he said she said, it wasn’t me, and the amount of tax payers money the university is throwing out as if its no ones business, Time for the people of Hawaii Nei to get off of there okole’s and do something about something.

  232. Kapahulukine October 7, 2012 8:15 pm

    Warrior Dave:

You are absolutely right. If this pro-style offense does not work out, and we go back to losing seasons it won’t be the end of the world. Pele won’t swallow up the islands, the sun won’t crash into the sea. In that vein, you are completely correct. Dwelling on problems of severe UH losses doesn’t change anything. Don’t worry, be happy!

  233. HolyCrapp! October 7, 2012 8:21 pm

Unless the talent level is there. The pro-style offense works when it is unpredictable. Adjustments, Adjustments, Adjustments on the blocking schemes is a must. QB has to be mobile and has to be able to read the defense.

  234. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:23 pm

    Former UH Athlete,

No, I hear you . . . definitely. I was just pointing out that I wasn’t anti-Chow. While I tend to prefer playing more of a variety (at least a couple) at the QB position until we find something that works with what we have (which is probably not the way most coaches would go), as I said before I defer to Coach Chow, as he is the one with the reputation for coaching up QBs.

I still support Chow and his system. I also realize it is a rebuilding year. I just wasn’t expecting such a drop off, especially on defense.

I do, however, think that UH will win next week.

  235. SAWARRIOR October 7, 2012 8:23 pm

  236. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:26 pm

Just wondering, cuz I forgot . . . how many years will Graham have to play? One or two?

  237. kev-1 October 7, 2012 8:29 pm

Zwahlen doesn’t exist in my mind yet. He will be going on a two year mission. His return is too far into the future for my football brain. So much can happen by then. I am not writing him off, I’m just not going to get excited about it yet.

  238. papajoe2 October 7, 2012 8:34 pm

No disrespect intended but, Chicken A Grease, what does the “A” stand for?

  239. Warrior Dave October 7, 2012 8:37 pm

    Kev-1,

I believe Graham has 2 playing years. I also agree with your comments about Zwahlen. It’ll be 3 years before he even gets to step on the playing field.

Hope he doesnt change his mind while on his LDS mission. Not that he’ll be recruited to go elsewhere, like BYU.

  240. kitsunegari October 7, 2012 8:45 pm

People on message boards dwelling on bad losses does nothing for a team.

To think it helps influenece coaches to change or improve only shows how delusional and egocentric those that believe and drink their own brand of kool aid is.

Anyone want to keep arguing, go ahead and create arguments… probably why they are on their 3rd wife by now.

  241. cee808 October 7, 2012 8:45 pm

greenthumb @ 205 From the videos, it sure sounded like the Senators were getting good in-house legal and staff support.

tommui @ 221 Yes, considering that the justification given in the video, it definitely appeared to be a sweetheart deal. Regent Matayoshi said that President Greenwood both negotiated the sabbatical deal with Chancellor Hinshaw, and gave the Board the impression that the Chancellor could sue the Board if the deal was not confirmed. If the President were to receive similar exceptions (time in office, sabbatical salary, and/or sabbatical duration), it would seem impossible to justify.

Oh, not a problem, papajoe2. “Chicken Grease” is the handle/screen name. “A” is not a middle initial. When I refer to myself, I use the third person colloquialism, “a Grease”. When I say “A Grease is having New York steak tonight” I’m simply saying “I am having New York Steak tonight.”

    It’s strange. But, it’s my (“a Grease’s”) style. 😉

  243. Former UH Athlete October 7, 2012 9:06 pm

@kev-1, Zwahlens going on mission? dang it. He’ll probably end up at you know where. The good news is that his dad played for Chow, and he obviously has a positive take on what Chow can do for Aaron. So UH has a chance. Maybe the timing will be perfect as Graham would be finishing up by the time Zwahlen finishes his mission.

Another reason to hate BYU, they have a built in recruiting trick… if they can’t get their player, then the LDS church comes knocking to go on mission. I believe all missionaries have to train in Provo (or at least the athletes do).

And yes Taylor Graham will have 2 years of eligibility.

At least we can say Chow has already got two big pieces in his 1st partial recruiting class. QB and RB appear to be solid for 2013 and beyond. It’s impossible for UH to get all the pieces in one recruiting year, which is why it takes 3-4 years to rebuild a football program. If the returning talent is good, the transition can be faster because theres fewer holes to fill, like in 2008, but UH is not in that situation now.

  244. madeinhawaii October 7, 2012 9:11 pm

    Former UH Athlete:

550K is an arbitrary number… UH can afford more if they wanted to.

If Chow doesn’t work out, you think they will be fixed on that number? Highly unlikely.

  245. Ralph October 7, 2012 9:14 pm

Rainbow Wahine open Fall softball practice tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at the RWSS, public welcome. There is a $6 parking charge to enter lower campus.

  246. kev-1 October 7, 2012 9:15 pm

Not to mention that the young defensive players now getting time will have experience on their side next year. There IS talent on this team, to be sure. It is just misfiring for some reason. I’m not saying we should be winning all of our games, I just think we already have the talent to be more competetive than what has been shown on the field. That’s what is frustrating. And I think that’s what makes people point at the coaches.

  247. Rodney October 7, 2012 9:19 pm

  248. kev-1 October 7, 2012 9:24 pm

What’s wrong with the schedule? Are you talking strength, or placement of road games?

  249. greenthumb October 7, 2012 9:27 pm

221 tommui and 244 cee808: thanks for additional info. Yes, the senators were doing fine. It just seems that when UH employees fish into their own pockets, they get legal counsel that tends to get them what they want.

I am now appreciating the vagueness of DMK’s concluding comment on Tuesday. Perhaps the potential of further legislative doings will end the inertia and same-old same-old. When it comes to sweetheart stuff, seems like that needs to stay as a drinking cup brand and candy hearts on 2/14.

  250. Warrior Dave October 7, 2012 9:30 pm

I agree that the placement of games makes this year especially tough. Personally, I like the caliber of teams we’re playing.

But I wish we had more home games up front to help the coaches and players through these difficult times.

Good to have a bye after next week but then it’s another back to back on the road.

  254. Warrior Dave October 7, 2012 10:03 pm

    #255 Rodney,

I would be surprised if the players weren’t studying the play book. From what I see from Coach Chow, that would have been corrected early on. Plus, the players take weekly tests on the playbill.

When Aranda was here, he agreed that his playbill was too advanced and tried to install too much too soon. Maybe Kaumeyer like Aranda has to reduce the number of pages and play very vanilla defense. Like Coach says, if you know what you doing you play faster.

    Former UH Athlete:

    Dang, I love your comments!

I too thought I was being generous listing my prediction of 4-8 for the 20-12 season.

It’s not that I don’t believe in Chow, because I do, I really do…However, with the style he wants to play, and I’m talking offensively, he just doesn’t have the right kids.

I mean truthfully, he’s trying to run the Kentucky Derby with Clydesdales.

I give 2, maybe 3 years to recruit the right type of kids, and then I’ll judge.

I love the discipline he’s trying to place on the kids, because for too long, we had a bunch of “punks” representing our state school. It was embarrassing.

I do believe in Chow, I buy into what he’s selling, I like that he speaks honestly and truthfully when I see / hear him.

I read a bunch of arm-chair Q-B’s chiming in about Sean Schroeder, but c’mon people, exactly who the hell is he supposed to throw the ball too…?

The poor kid’s running for his life every snap, UH offensive line play has been horrible. And that’s saying it nicely.

Defense, to be honest, it’s really starting to concern me.

I do, however, love the idea of playing Benny Fonua at middle linebacker.

Go Chow! Go get some recruits! I hope the “local boys” stay home!
