Depth consolidation

The Warriors are going deep into the roster in search of defensive linemen.

Hunter Thomson stayed after Tuesday’s practice to receive tutoring from defensive line coach Lewis Powell. Thomson received medical clearance to play following Monday’s practice.

Kaeo Alo, the older brother of UH linebacker Kamalani Alo, was summoned from the scout team, where he was a fullback. He actually was wearing his yellow jersey when he worked with the defensive regulars. At 5-9 and 260, Alo has no problem getting leverage on taller offensive linemen. For history majors, he might be the next Delmar Johnson.

And, of course, defensive ends Beau Yap, Tavita Woodard and Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson took turns at defensive tackle.

* * * * *

The secondary also has its share of ailing players. Safety John Hardy-Tuliau took reps at cornerback to provide relief in that area. Hardy-Tuliau forced a fumble during team drills.

* * * * *

I haven’t been able to follow the hearings. Did they come to the part where they identified the person who:

• Authorized the $200,000 payment?

• Signed off on the payment?

• Signed for the reception of the payment?

Happy birthday to Krystle Kaneshiro.

  20. al October 3, 2012 8:45 am

well, this year’s schedule is perhaps one of the things that may have led to jd’s demise.

it is an awkward and very difficult schedule that should have been better laid out given the travel hurdles we face going across the sea. two back to back travels is not something so desired and given the opponents that we had as well.

then, the lack of the 13th game cost us a lot of money. typically that 13th game that should be a home game that helps us stay in the black.

what happened to the last home game of the season with a somewhat tough opponent. surely, the conference championships put a damper on that one, but, teams like byu, navy, army, etc could fit that bill really nicely.

    • Authorized the $200,000 payment?

    • Signed off on the payment?

    • Signed for the reception of the payment?

Mr. Tsai . . . think Donna Mercado Kim — whether she intended to do this or not — did a good job in bringing out that the payment was relatively done haphazardly despite all of the procedures and referal to “legal corporation”.

Guess the whole point of having the “Whisperers who are Lawyahs” was so that no ONE UH Admin’ person testifying would admit to being the signer-offer.

Senator Slom and some UH sider named “Lee” had the exact same Reyn’s UH aloha shirt. Someone call Fashion Police.

Could see Dave Reardon in the background of yesterday’s briefing. He changed seats at least twice (ants in pants?). Had also, what a Grease would describe, a seeming “silver age actress living in our modern times” who was cracking a Grease up; she kept hiding her eyes, face with her hands.

  45. manoa October 3, 2012 9:16 am

The need for lawyers is difficult to understand and has not been explained well. The UH simply cannot say or otherwise reveal certain information in this kind of a public hearing. There is a criminal investigation by the FBI ongoing, there is a lawsuit threatened by Donovan’s lawyer, there have been other lawsuits threatened, and the UH is contemplating employment action against others besides Donovan and Sherrif (and those employees have hired legal counsel, by the way and counsel has put the UH on notice about protecting the rights of those employees), the UH could compromise its case in defense or in taking action against employees.

There are instances where the UH could be compelled to answer questions by a judge ruling on the pubic’s right to know, employee privacy rights, confidentiality agreements and waivers, all after hearing all parties on the issue. How is this done? By seeking a subpoena to get the UH to testify. No subpoena, then the UH is legally unable to answer– this protects the UH and the State. In fact there are things the Senate can dig into without this problem the UH because they are the employer, the party involved in these potential lawsuits, and the fact they lack the immunity the Senators have.

  46. madeinhawaii October 3, 2012 9:19 am

I don’t recall any of the long time coaches backing Frasier or Yoshida when they got terminated.

  47. A-TEAM October 3, 2012 9:21 am

Is Frank Lord ever gonna get a chance to show his stuff . Our transfer didn’t impress me at all. As a former lineman has anyone heard of “move your feet, butt down shoulders back on pass or get to the 2nd level”. Oh I forgot Our OL coach was a receiver (coach). What happen with the hype on Kody playing Def. Hyped up the kid then deflate his balloon. Now looks like def is activating red shirts instead of giving this kid a shot. I think he is ready to cross over. Sometime what your looking for is right there in front of you. Cover story say they are digging deep into the depth chart. Duh………they’re right there…….

  48. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 9:28 am

Was Yoshida terminated? I thought he retired.

  49. Stephen Tsai October 3, 2012 9:29 am

Frank Loyd did get to play in the BYU game.

  50. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 9:30 am

I think UH has too many public relations people on staff, not to mention outside PR people hired by admin.

    What good are they?

  51. Stephen Tsai October 3, 2012 9:30 am

Mike Andrade worked out at DT yesterday.

I’m not exactly sure what ailment he had, but he appears to be better.

He’s not as tall as I thought he was, perhaps 5-10? But it’s a game of leverage, so I think he can be fine at DT. (By the way, for some reason he reminds me of The Beast.)

  52. WarriorNY October 3, 2012 9:30 am

“The secondary also has its share of ailing players.”

Oh no… I hope its not Mike Edwards…

  53. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 9:33 am

Mike Edwards is fun to watch. Hope he is healthy.

  54. K-Bay October 3, 2012 9:34 am

The way they are already ushering coaches and administrators out…

“Suggestions” and “Discussions” with those Specifically Outside or Above The Appropriate Decision Chain, as well as How Fast JD/Administrators Fall Out of Favor for “Not Listening” was covered Last Week with MRC…

  55. AlaWai October 3, 2012 9:35 am

Smoking Gun. The wire transfer required a signature. So, who signed? The money was wired in exchange for a service to be provided. A contract therefore exits. The receiving account required a signature. Who signed? The receiver accepted the money to deliver a service agreed upon. Money was accepted under false pretenses. The banks involved are federally insured depositories. We have wire fraud, homeland security violations, failure to supervise, etc. etc. etc. The UH admins will continue to play dumb at the advice of their legal counsel. Eventually the banks must answer to this scam. The banks may end up being the fall guys but the ineptitude of the admins dictates that a major campus clean up occurs. Too much opala and pilikia!

  56. Stephen Tsai October 3, 2012 9:35 am

I think UH has the appropriate number of PR people.

In comparison, sports media relations has five full-time PR people.

It’s a matter of public interest. UH athletics doesn’t need PR people to get out the word. For instance, football gets covered every day of the year. They don’t have to send out releases about position changes or the Warrior Walk because it will get covered on its own.

But there are no booster clubs for Hawaiian Studies or the English Department. To generate media coverage of non-sports events takes a lot more work.

  57. Stephen Tsai October 3, 2012 9:36 am

    Ala Wai:

    Exactly.

  58. Stephen Tsai October 3, 2012 9:37 am

  65. AlaWai October 3, 2012 9:55 am

    ST:

The UH PR should be outsourced to a local PR firm if its not being already done. One firm for education and one for athletics. Then UH would not need such a big staff of covered state workers. Right now it is inefficient and a waste of budget dollars. This same situation exists in many departments and would streamline many processes if they were outsourced to professional companies.

Questioning by the Senators forced many to use the “we followed the advice of General Council” excuse, and the lawyer’s to invoke attorney client privilege. These folks could make a huge step toward transparency if they would waive the invoked attorney client privilege and let the UH lawyers (inhouse and contracted) answer the Senators’ questions in full. Of course the chances of the Florida company feeling bad about the deal and sending the money back are better.

I want to watch Senator Slom’s recounting of his trip to Florida again, but it sounded to me that UH played a business version of the arcade claw “Crane Game” and lost. But instead of a few dollars, they fed two hundred thousand dollars into the machine … and were poised to feed more in if the Wonder folks hadn’t have called.

    http://www.bmigaming.com/games-arcade-crane-claw-machines.htm

  71. tommui October 3, 2012 10:30 am

cee808 @70 Attorney-client privilege may be waived by the client. So if the excuse was “we followed the advice of general counsel”, the follow up question could be – do you waive the privilege? Or

“did you ask general counsel” for the advice or did general counsel just send out an e-mail, phone call, letter advising one and all his/her advice.

Perhaps Senator Kim, Slom et al should continue the hearing to find out what the UH counsel said/did etc including the question of redacting the records – did any of the people that you wanted to protect ask for such protection?

  72. Whats up October 3, 2012 10:34 am

When Hawaii is playing true freshman in multiple positions on defense, you know times are hard! But it is what it is, just like last year there was no shortfall of injuries but thats still like Chow said no excuse. I know this is a transition year and the coaches and players are still learning each others strengths as well as new playbook. But the coaches need to find a way to put the players in position to make plays, regardless if it’s a McMackin recruit or Chow recruit. The acronym (K.I.S.S) Keep It Simple Stupid should be the approach this season for the coaches regarding the playbook and scheming both on offense and defense.

Chow needs recruit JC players hard this class and most likely every class since Hawaii has such a hard time getting top High School recruits to commit. Transfers should also be top on the list too. LA Tech recruited a boat load of pretty good JC players the past 2-3 years and it paying off huge right now, so why not!

For these smaller-framed replacements on DL, look up Houston Ala.

Hey ST, I really think the next Karaoke Kall needs to have some Gangnam style… whaddya think?

    Go Warriors, whoever you are!

  78. westwind October 3, 2012 11:01 am

Plain and simple. By their actions and spoken word at these two hearings, the BOR, MRC Greenwood, Tom Apple should tender their resignations or be removed from their positions. The UH-Manoa Admin has been less than truthful with their answers. The BOR has been a rubberstamp for the UH Admin. I for one will not donate any money if these people do not go.

  79. Goldman October 3, 2012 11:11 am

Seems only thing to decide at this point is who should be replacements for BOR and MRC. Kim’s named has been tossed around. She seems smart, spunky, no-nonsense. Any other names or possible replacements for MRC? Neil, you paying attention. I know your staff reads these boards. MRC, Apple, and all the other MRC and Apple Dumpling Gang should be shown the door.

  80. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 11:15 am

That’s easy to say. However, don’t these people have contracts? How much will it cost to pay them off? Beaucoup bucks!

I’ll continue to donate to UH Foundation, because my money will benefit the students.

  81. Kevin October 3, 2012 11:21 am

Donations are done out of goodwill and are not obligations.

While the frustrations of those are centered around UH administration (i.e. upper campus) are heavily documented, it is important to remember and distinguish what athletic booster club funds are used for and who attempts to raise them.

All athletic booster clubs directly feed their funds raised to the programs themselves for the benefit of the student-athletes and coaches and some clubs utilize those funds to assist with academic assistance for the student-athletes (i.e. summer school).

All funds raised goes directly to the programs and yes, the UH Foundation does take 3% since all booster accounts are under the UH Foundation. Booster club officers an volunteers are exactly that, volunteers. Volunteers that use up their own time and often their own funds to help operate the functions needed to solicit donations to athletic programs. There is no profit to be made.

Again, people’s discretionary income and how it is spent is their own choice, but we must be aware of what athletic booster organizations try to accomplish during these economic times.

  82. Kevin October 3, 2012 11:23 am

    These are interesting times indeed…

The court of public opinion ultimately has final say when it comes to long-term repercussions both financially and ethically.

  83. cee808 October 3, 2012 11:24 am

tommui @ 71 I agree. It would seem reasonable for the committee to follow up and ask key administration officials if they would be willing to waive this privilege.

From the opening remarks by the Senators, I was under the impression they were very receptive to public calls for additional hearings and associated congressional actions. At the end, it sounded like additional hearings would be called if warranted based on reports from law enforcement. It wasn’t clear to me if that meant they would reconvene if law enforcement found UH was the victim of illegal actions, versus being duped legally. To me, since the UH administration has been able to deflect questions based on the assertion that there is an ongoing FBI investigation, additional hearings could be warranted if that turns out not to be the case.

  84. Pauoa Boy October 3, 2012 11:25 am

So which side of the ball is Afusia going to be on? I think he could actually see playing time and has a big body to be on the defensive side of the ball. Seems like Clarke has that center job locked down so far. I hope Matagiese is going to be okay to play. At least for the time being Afusia could add some much needed depth and relieve Correa and Matagiese for a series or two. I’d also try Koloamatangi on the defensive line as well.

  85. INNOCENT OBSERVER October 3, 2012 11:27 am

while the payment of the $200,000 is important, the real issue is the aftermath of the fiasco. there were many blunders made by numerous people, from top down. greenwood and apple presented conflicting testimonies (lie); they should be concerned about their future with the university. apple appears unable to think on his feet, and he was considered the best?

  86. AlaWai October 3, 2012 11:27 am

@80. It will be far more expensive to lose the good faith of large foundations and agencies who contribute to UH. The current organism that pervades the “system” will be harder to get rid of than plantar warts. Yes it will be painful and expensive but the students will gain the most from the purge. The first step is to get the BOR to step down and be replaced. The faculty union has already given a statement of “no confidence.” One name that comes to mind for a meaningful position is Judge Walter Kirimitsu.

  87. Pauoa Boy October 3, 2012 11:31 am

Mike Andrade only 5’10” really??? Wasn’t he listed as 6’2″ coming out of high school? That’s a lot more than the 2 inch rule…

  90. Bleed Green and White October 3, 2012 11:56 am

Stevie Wonder concert wasn’t the straw that broke the camels back as I see it, it actually turns out to be the pretty little girl that pulled the wool over all our eyes.

UH is flawed, heavily, from top to bottom.

No doubt it starts with conflicting truths between Greenwood and Apple, the top dogs no doubt. The screams embarrassing.

Bottom line, and thru two senate hearings still no accountability.

Who authorized the release of $200k?

Who authorized a wire transfer of such a huge amount?

Who tried to cover it all up?

And why is that person / persons still working at the university?

    Damn simple isn’t it…?

Arena manager has an idea, with a contact, makes contact, they share the idea, then contact his superiors, his bosses. His bosses in turn still leave the responsibility of following thru with the idea, with said arena manager.

Arena manager does all the leg work, including contacts with UH legal team, promoter and agents.

    What’s wrong with this picture….?

Maybe it’s just me, but isn’t the arena manager in charge of basketball / volleyball courts, turnstile counts, clean rest rooms, and in general making the building look clean and presentable…?

Is he really the guy that should’ve been the front man in a potential deal worth up to $2M if they indeed booked two shows…?

Should the brain trusts involved….Initially Jim Donovan and Carl Clapp, later ANYBODY from upper campus, or somebody in an upper level administration post at least, shouldn’t they have taken over as “front man”….?

    That’s what really irks me.

Good leadership, and I know it’s hard to find…but good leadership has to come with “The Buck Stops here Mentality”.

Take control, stand behind your decisions, take the credits, accept the blames / responsibility, do the damn work,

You know what else irks the heck out of me….?

Spending damn good money, repeatedly, on search firms and outside search committees. Why in God’s name does the state pay administrators so much fricken money, if all they’re gonna do is spend more money, to be told what to do?

    That makes me SICK!!!!!

  91. Shoko October 3, 2012 12:11 pm

Its been mentioned that Andrade also runs a 40 yard in 4.6 seconds. Thats pretty fast for a person listed at 6’2″ at 275 pounds.

  92. Shoko October 3, 2012 12:14 pm

Wonder if they will archive the last nights hearing today. Didn’t get to watch it in its entirety.

  93. Pomai October 3, 2012 12:15 pm

    Lister?

  96. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 12:21 pm

1st game at UH, jr college, or high school?

  97. Shoko October 3, 2012 12:23 pm

Oops, misread. No idea in terms of passing TD in first game.

  98. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 12:25 pm

if it’s UH, my guess is Rolo or Colt.

  99. Shoko October 3, 2012 12:26 pm

I know who now. But I had to look it up.

  100. jojo ® October 3, 2012 12:26 pm

Pomai!! Ummm I gonna say UH 10 – SDSU 34

  101. Pomai October 3, 2012 12:27 pm

come on gigi i said UH football!!!!!!!!!!LOL

  102. Chicken Grease October 3, 2012 12:27 pm

Think this sad situation simply demonstrates that we must needs get more involved with the running of the UH system if we don’t want shenanigans and non-answers when those shenanigans are unleashed.

Hold your respective representatives and senators responsible for happenins at UH. Hell, call the governor’s office directly; Abercrombie should have a vested interest, he earning his Ph.D. there and all.

Get involved beyond the football game. Are you? Are you, really?

Shoko @ 92 The streaming video for SCA02 10/2/2012 is up at http://olelo.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=13.

Unfortunately, they haven’t posted the downloadable video version (MP4) for this hearing. In addition, they removed the MP4 that was initially posted after the 9/24/2012 hearing. They have other 7 hour videos available as MP4s, so I can’t see why they wouldn’t want to post both the MP3 (audio) and MP4 (video). It’s not that big of a deal, but just a pain to have to use screen capture to save the streaming video.

  105. Pomai October 3, 2012 12:28 pm

  107. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 12:30 pm

definitely not Timmy Chang. Didn’t he have a losing season his first year here?

  108. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 12:30 pm

    how about Gabriel?

  109. Shoko October 3, 2012 12:33 pm

Aikae. If the person asking the trivia question had to look it up, den people can look it up too. 😆 😆 😆

  111. Worried Warrior October 3, 2012 12:35 pm

Wow, UH is in bad shape on depth if they calling for scout team FB’s to fill in at DT.

Hopefully UH’s offense can get on track against SDSU’s porous defense. SDSU’s last 3 games have been high scoring shootouts. The only problem is that UH isn’t geared for high scoring games because they don’t have any playmakers at WR or QB this year.

The problem lies that the defensive line is so banged up and thin, stopping the run is going to be very difficult the rest of the season. Injuries plus four poor recruiting classes by McMackin have decimated the D-Line.

I fear for the defense’s safety when they play at Fresno, home vs Boise , and at Air Force. Fresno’s revamped no-huddle offense is averaging 513 yards per game… Boise is super physical and has a top notch defense and may give UH it’s second shutout loss… Air Force is always tough because of the option and the cut blocks.

Road game in high altitude Ft Collins (at CSU) is never an easy win and UNLV is not as bad as their record shows plus they have very good running backs.

It will be a tough year for UH, as I predicted, but what I didn’t realize how bad the talent was at WR and QB thanks to McMackin’s recruiting incompetence.

For Christ’s sake, our top two QB’s entering week 1 were both walk-ons! Graves, the incumbent QB from last year, was demoted to WR (but back at QB again) because he practiced horrible. The WR’s are flat out awful. Nobody has the speed/ability to stretch the defense or get off man coverage and get open. Orstowski has been the best WR this year, but saying he’s limited physically is being kind. Believe me, if this was still the run n shoot offense, we wouldn’t be much better than what we are seeing now.

Enough bad talk… on to the positive stuff…

The good news is that the RB’s are actually quite good. I really like Will Gregory and once Iosefa is healthy, UH has a very nice 1-2 combo. Next season, QB Taylor Graham will be eligible and UH will have a big strong armed QB that can make all the throws and get the ball down field. The O-line is extremely young and inexperienced this year, but them getting playing time this year will make them much better next season. This unit will only get better as Chow gets better talent in.

Defense can’t get much worse than now (see earlier for reasons), but for starters, next year means a clean slate of health. UH does have some nice players in the secondary. Hardy-Tuliau and Mike Edwards are nice players.

Chow biggest task in the next few years is improving the front 7 and getting talented skill players on offense.

  112. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 12:35 pm

I’ve only been watching warrior football since the JJ era dawned, so don’t know anything about the previous QBs.

  127. BigWave96744 October 3, 2012 1:06 pm

Timmy was doing so bad, JJ yanked him and SWA led the team to victory

#127. SWA wasn’t the starter if he replaced Chang. Guessing Gaves.

  129. Chicken Grease October 3, 2012 1:09 pm

Who holds the record for touchdown passes in first game of their career?

    [emphasis a Grease’s]

Career. Not only at UH, right? 😛

  130. gigi-hawaii October 3, 2012 1:09 pm

hmmm. Wonder if Chow will do that to SS.

    Replace SS with Shutter?

  131. BigWave96744 October 3, 2012 1:12 pm

Robinson, Colt, TG, Schroeder all played SC their 1st game and we got smoked.

  132. BigWave96744 October 3, 2012 1:14 pm

Graves 1st game he threw 1TD to Dustin Blount

  133. Shoko October 3, 2012 1:16 pm

Hint: The record for touchdown passes in first game of his career is three TD’s.

Is it me or is Mr. Harris easily aggravated when questioned

  134. cocobean October 3, 2012 1:17 pm

Not first start eh. Wild guess JJ.

  135. BigWave96744 October 3, 2012 1:17 pm

SWA had 2 TD passing and one running. He was the POTG.

He spoke of this game at a men’s rally at our church 🙂

  136. oldtimer808 October 3, 2012 1:18 pm

Ever since the Wonder blunder, it appears everyone is abbreviating everything and so here I am trying to figure out who the heck is that person some of the bloggers are posting. I think I got JJ for June Jones but who is SWA….hold it I got it..I just scrolled up and saw another post. Thats what I get for starting at the bottom of the blog when I come back on.

  137. greenthumb October 3, 2012 1:20 pm

129 — first game of HS career maybe?

Thanks for posting something where puzzling is good, unlike yesterday’s hearing, where puzzling again was frustrating.

  138. Shoko October 3, 2012 1:21 pm

    137. First game of his UH career.

  139. jimmy the lock October 3, 2012 1:21 pm

    Tipton

  140. oldtimer808 October 3, 2012 1:22 pm

I blame this lack of understanding the abbreviations to the General Council.

  141. greenthumb October 3, 2012 1:22 pm

133 – Seems Harris didn’t like getting cross-questioned. Credit to the senators for staying on task and relatively calm with him. I do give Carlsmith credit toward the end of the hearing, when he pointed to the answer to #1 and said that it shouldn’t have been answered that way for the legislature.

  142. jm2375 (Infuse) October 3, 2012 1:22 pm

    Howzit Tsai-kos!

Al-san, back-to-back road games not JD’s doing. It was the MWC. I don’t really blame him for the missing game either. All this realignment cr$p is the culprit.

    Go Warriors!

    Go Wahine!

  143. jeezy33 October 3, 2012 1:23 pm

I don’t think fans understand match ups. Byu was a bad match up for Hawaii considering they dont give up any yards on the ground.

I’m surprised just because UH lost big to Byu that the predictions are leaning towards another blow out this week.

I don’t know if Hawaii will win or not because we have yet to be tested in a close match up. I do think Hawaii matches up well with SDSU though. SDSU has all kinds of trouble on defense giving up big plays. SDSU does run the ball well but I dont think their running attack is as physical as BYU or as creative as Nevada. I think talent wise, we match up. I believe Chow will draw up a good game plan to expose the weaknesses in the SDSU defense.

This game will be a 1 possession game in my opinion and hoping the Warriors come out on top.

    27-24 UH

  154. Buffoman October 3, 2012 1:48 pm

Looking at the list of predictions, there are about a third who believe that Hawaii cannot stop a man on crutches. then there’s a third who have wild dreams of the offense just doing something not done to anyone better than Lamar. The middle third are plain hopeful that the defense will make stops when necessary and the offense will improve enough to actually score more than once.

I am in the middle and could see the better result in score belonging to either team. I’d prefer it to be us, but at this point a moral victory in a close, well played loss is fine.

#146 rolo’s 1st pass was a bouncer to a wide open receiver in a loss to to d1aa portland state, he would later be benched for a true freshman named timmy chang. 2001 rolo was freakin awesome.

UH has spent an additional (so far) $900,000 on the stevie wonder concert after losing the initial $200K. WHAT A BUNCH OF DUMB MONKEYS!

if upper campus has so much money to throw around, they need to forget that $11 mil the athletic department owes.

  163. lava October 3, 2012 2:03 pm

    Re Wonder Blunder,

Hearings have been fascinating. Many responses refer back to the advice of UH general counsel, who according to the flow chart of the UH hierarchy is Daroyln Lendio. Last night’s session closed with no determination as to whether she would be called to testify.

It appears UH would fare better without the likes of Apple, Greenwood, Matayoshi, Lendio and Norm Chow. A few other regents should probably be added to the list.

  164. lava October 3, 2012 2:05 pm

There is no way UH is beating SDSU, so prepare yourselves.

  165. jimmy the lock October 3, 2012 2:09 pm

Without that hope, you would just give up.

  169. Old School Dave October 3, 2012 2:20 pm

Delmar Johnson was a JUCO transfer from CCSF who played nose guard. No D-I school would offer him because of his statue – 5 foot 9, 245 lbs (solid muscle), but Paul Johnson kept mentioning him to Wags. No one could block the guy at the JUCO level, including players headed on to Pac-10 schools. Johnson had a solid junior year for UH in 1989, but a knee injury from a motocycle accident prevented him from playing his senior season.

  170. SAWARRIOR October 3, 2012 2:22 pm

    143. i understand match-ups…. we were over-matched against Nevada and BYU, some in personnel, but mainly in coaching/schemes. A new FBS school like Texas State should not lose to Nevada by 13 points and we get blown-out by 45, no ways. I’ve seen Texas State in person, they don’t have the talent we do. At a minimum, we should be able to compete against other mid-majors. getting blown-out by fellow mid-major by 45 and 47 is ridicules. IMO

  171. LizKauai October 3, 2012 2:26 pm

Romney’s getting some decent jabs . . . mentioning Obama’s not getting his (Romney’s) tax cut plan right. Romney’s really championing small business more than the president is.

I dunno. Jobs seemed a bit too vengeful, no? Um, well, maybe his style would work against certain Mideast countries (and groups).

It’s a bit of a nice battle, this debate.

16% of the US population will tune in supposedly by TV ratings estimates.

That doesn’t necessarily mean only 16% cares, but its kind of a tell.

Based on this, I am confident Obama will win. Not because he ‘deserves’ to or is the better person for the job, but because of…

    APATHY.

Same thing happened when George W Bush won re-election. The democrats had a JOKE of a candidate then. People were not impressed. No amount of Anti-Bush/Anti-Iraq War hippie college beer keg rallies could make a difference then. No amount of lopsided extreme liberal Michael Moore propaganda could make a difference then.

This year. Same thing but different political party falling victim to APATHY.

If you fail to present a viable alternative, VOILA… you lose. So, no cry when its over in November.

People vote because they believe in democracy, but what happens when your options keep getting less and less exciting and promising??? Answer: see the last few decades.

    Garbage in, garbage OUT.

    October 3rd, 2012 at 3:00 pm

    . . .

Based on this, I am confident Obama will win. Not because he ‘deserves’ to or is the better person for the job, but because of…

    APATHY

That’s a good one. Though, a Grease is still impressed that a Lingle won TWO gubernatorial terms in this Democrat stronghold of Hawaii. I can’t believe all those Democrat-rich public union folk “stayed home” to result in a Lingle victory, again, twice.

If you believe the polls, it’s a dead heat ‘tween Obama and Romney . . . and if you know a bunch of folk in the mainland . . . it’s a bad situation up there (not everywhere like Hawaii, get, well, enough jobs here) regarding jobs . . . people dipping into savings. Housing situation. We’re to trillions in that national debt right now and only one of the guys on stage is in charge of the country right now. I mean, we love Obama down here, but, there are 48 contiguous states that might have a different view.

Remember Reagan’s landslide victory back when? He was the Republican challenger. Denied Carter a 2nd term.

Ah. Obama has the mainstream press on his side. That DOES help.

Holy crap. Obama just mentioned “Obamacare.” A Grease has previously predicted that if Obama mentions, ever, “Obamacare”, he will lose the election.

Gotta admit. Romney’s offering more specifics in this debate.

“The candidate with the better hair wins” [paraphrase] — Michael Savage, Ph.D.

The events of Sept 11, 2001 should have changed things for the BETTER.

    It didn’t.

What survived is our dedicated passion of hate for political parties not associated with our own selfish biases…

#168 Agree. Always saw that glass half full. Heck, I sat and cheered in a very quiet, empty section for coach VA. I remember that game when it rained so hard the water going down the stairs looked like mini waterfalls.

I had a chance to go to a Pro Bowl gathering a few years back and saw Marcus Allan, Eric Dickerson and Marshall Faulk chatting. I went up to them and said, hey Marshall, I bet you just loved coming to Hawaii to play when you were at SDSU. He turned and smiled and said, damn I had a lot of fun just racking up crazy yards against you guys. To that Eric Dickerson asked what’s that all about. Marshall said, he just had our number and could run up insane yards when he played against us. I agreed and told him I followed his career because of what he did to our team. He laughed and thanked me. He is quite a gentleman.

  203. Otto October 3, 2012 4:37 pm

Everyone has to remember, this was an informational legistlative session. The UH officials didn’t testify under oath. They weren’t going to say anything that could be used against them, and they weren’t going to name names… cuz the employees involved would have sued them for defamation, slander, etc.

If they find the third party in Florida, then UH will file a criminal complaint for fraud or theft, and hopefully, some of all the details would come out in a trial. Sooner or later UH will file a civil claim against the local promoter although he has declared bankruptcy, UH will want to go the record as a creditor. Sooner or later they will go after some of the other staff with disciplinary action (reprimand, suspension, demotion, something), and then the employee will file a grievance, lawsuit, etc.

  204. 3-Prong October 3, 2012 4:43 pm

$200,000 was a mistake in judgement. Was the other $900,000+ highway robbery? Can someone explain to me where the 900k went again.

  215. Kevin October 3, 2012 5:52 pm

    3-prong,

Not to help the academic or athletic mission of the university for sure.

  216. madeinhawaii October 3, 2012 6:03 pm

That 900,000 would have gone a long way to help resolve the Athletics Dept. debt… Since upper campus has that kind of money to toss around, they should just forgive the Athletic Department’s debt. Then the Athletic Department can avoid this kind of happenings again.

  217. obachan October 3, 2012 6:06 pm

Chow made it clear that he’s old school when it comes to making changes to the QB position. In other words, it ain’t gonna happen unless the sun don’t rise tomorrow morning. With that said, it will be interesting to see how Schroeder does against the Aztecs who rank poorly on pass defense.

  218. Kevin October 3, 2012 6:10 pm

Personally, I believe $900,000.00 invested towards something like the expansion of the Nagatani Academic Center at the athletic complex for student-athletes for all sports would be more useful as opposed to dropping it into the black hole of debt to upper campus.

  219. Kevin October 3, 2012 6:17 pm

Personally-speaking, the debt accumulated by the athletic department to upper campus could very well be an indicator of where athletics is when it comes to priorities of the university.

Whenever profits come and are available via donations or earned dollars via ticket revenue or whatever, investing in the future of the athletic department for necessary athletic and academic tools represents a want, represents a need to have the department grow and help the progression of the student-athletes involved that come into UH.

It was already documented that of the 400 student-athletes at UH Manoa, most are not on scholarship and make the university over 2 million dollars a year in tuition revenue.

FACT: unless you play football or are a male basketball player, most student-athletes move on to the work force and professional fields in many areas and even then, those football players and male basketball players make up a small percentage that actually turn pro.

Invest in your inventory. Your inventory are the student-athletes.. “student” comes first so, invest in the academic evolution of that aspect as well.

    And…

Athletically-speaking we do not need nor can the athletic department, coaches, and fans/supporters/donors expect improvements on the field of competition if we continue to be worried about paying this back and paying this off. We are running in place and getting nowhere.

  220. SAWARRIOR October 3, 2012 6:37 pm

And in other not so good news, Jane Croson suspended indefinitely. 🙁

Hawaii’s eighth-ranked volleyball team flies out tonight for its second Big West road trip and it will be without all-conference hitter Jane Croson. The sophomore is suspended indefinitely for breaking team rules, according to Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji. He called it a “serious offense,” but would not elaborate.

Shoji said Croson she would be reinstated later if she “meets some obligations.”

    From Stephen:

I haven’t been able to follow the hearings. Did they come to the part where they identified the person who:

    • Authorized the $200,000 payment?

    • Signed off on the payment?

    • Signed for the reception of the payment?

    * * * * *

My reading of the the factfinders report and Senator Kim’s conversation on the sports animals show today :

The $200,000 was authorized by the Agreement for the concert, signed by C. Clapp.

Asst. Athletic Director for Business Operations, T. Kuraoka signed the authorization for payment per request from Clapp and Sheriff. Clapp is Kuraoka’s supervisor.

    P. Kobayashi, Director of Financial Mgt & Controller, who has the UH Disbursing Office under him decided to use the wire transfer method along with Kuraoka.

No one verified that the payment was going to a “real” escrow agent.

The MP4 video of yesterday’s Senate hearing is available for download at

    http://olelo.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=13.

Senator Slom’s recounting of his trip to Florida in search of the money trail is from 2:46PM to 2:50PM (between Mr. Sheriff and Chancellor Apple). He concludes that the scam “was not sophisticated in the least” and “we are not going to see that money again”.

In addition to speaking to a representative of the Florida promoter, he mentions that he tried to meet with the branch manager at the bank where (it seems based on context) the $200K briefly resided; he said the bank manager appeared to be “well aware of our investigation because she refused to speak at all or provide any documentation.”
