Fare play

Nevada will be the first football team to take advantage of the Kokua assistance program when it charters to Hawaii on UH’s dime.

OK, make that 1,500,000 dimes.

As part of the … er … um … agreement for joining the Mountain West, the Warriors are paying each visiting team from the Pacific time zone up to $150,000 to charter to and from Hawaii. (It’s $175,000 for charters if your team is in a city where your nose bleeds regularly.)

The Pack also will be staying at Turtle Bay to avoid distractions.

Not sure where the Pack’s fans will stay, or how many will be making the trip.

According to a Dec. 18 Reno Gazette-Journal article on the 2011 Hawaii Bowl: “As of Thursday afternoon, Nevada had sold just 10 tickets through phone sales, but had distributed about 600 because pass-list tickets count in tickets distributed. The Hawaii Bowl, mostly because of its annual Christmas Eve date has historically not been a well-attended game by fans of mainland teams. In 2009, there were about 150-200 Wolf Pack fans at the Hawaii Bowl.”

It should be a close race to Aloha Stadium. The Pack is taking the scenic route from the North Shore. The Warriors stay in Waikiki the day of a home game. The Aloha Festivals Floral Parade is this Saturday. UH has made arrangement for a police escort to the game.

* * * * *

If you ever need an event, call the Hawaii Five-0 crew. They were filming in our neighborhood last night, and they’re the most polite and well-organized group. Plus, they employ a lot of people. Good for the economy. Good for Hawaii.

    Jeezy:

    Excellent suggestion.

No plans for that right now because he’s the No. 2 center, but I suppose Kapua Sai can be the backup center.

  7. letsgowarriors September 19, 2012 7:16 am

i was thinkin the same, esp bc Ben Clarke is the starting C and only a frosh. Sai and/or Chauncey Winchester-Makainai can be the back up C.

Afusia looks like he plays w a good pad level.

  8. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 19, 2012 7:18 am

For those wondering what side of the field we will be on. Bobby Curran said that WAC rules required home teams to be on the opposite side of the press box.

The MWC however only recommends but not requires the home team to be on the opposite side of the press box.

Curran said expect Hawaii to be on the visitors side on Saturday.

  9. Stretch September 19, 2012 7:21 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

If the teams switch sides, how am I going to say “Hi” to Rolo?? The coaches change sides of the pressbox also. Bummer.

  10. letsgowarriors September 19, 2012 7:24 am

do u have any recruiting news?

  11. wafan September 19, 2012 7:27 am

Wait. Which visitor’s side? Last year’s visitor side or this year’s visitor side?

  12. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 19, 2012 7:29 am

Hawaii will be on the same side as the press box (makai).

  13. Stephen Tsai September 19, 2012 7:29 am

I wonder if we get to switch press boxes with the governor? Word is his booth in the South end zone has more urinals.

  14. gigi-hawaii September 19, 2012 7:30 am

That’s the good thing about watching the game on television. We get to see all sides.

  15. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 19, 2012 7:33 am

UHAD should pony up the money to make sure our team gets a police escort from waikiki to the stadium.

I saw a police escort as the buses were pulling up to the Warrior Walk but they weren’t with the team the whole way.

  16. wafan September 19, 2012 7:34 am

So, the visitor side is now the home side.

  19. gigi-hawaii September 19, 2012 7:35 am

We had a dinner reservation in Waikiki, but when we reached Kalakaua Ave at 5:15 pm, the police had blocked the entrance because of a parade.

We couldn’t access the restaurant from a side street, either, because of the parade.

Ended up at the Ilikai for dinner, instead.

  20. Will-I-Am September 19, 2012 7:37 am

ST, did you see the Five-0 crew guy open two bottles of water and pour it into a bowl for neighborhood dogs? I was thinking, wow! the dogs are getting better treatment than the humans. Such is life. It is off to work I go…

i always thought that mike andrade would be the sleeper of the year.

all he needs is to get up to snuff on the defensive schemes and he’ll play faster.

he reminds me of the greatest defensive lineman ever to play for the warriors…levi stanley.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Nice bio, WarriorNY!

Puppies need to leave North Shore about 3am, since the bridge will be closed… 😈 🙄

    GO WAHINE!

    GO WARRIORS!

  49. BigWave96744 September 19, 2012 9:05 am

Ok gangy, spread the word. Best time to view the turtles at Laniakea, on the North Shore, is Saturday between 11am and 1:30pm. Lots of parking along the road side or drive slow to see the turtles from your car.

Also small kind North, North West swell is coming on Saturday. So wax those sticks and shoot the tubes before the game.

  50. wait a minute September 19, 2012 9:06 am

wait a minute, you’re right! They were voting last week – what was the outcome of that? Maybe Local 5 will find a way to tell UNR not to stay at Turtle Bay too. Awwww Stretch, I know you were looking forward to seeing Rolo in the box…I guess we’ll see. Maybe you should move your seat to the South Endzone side. 🙂

  58. madeinhawaii September 19, 2012 9:18 am

    jojo,

Tell you sister, it’s time think outside of the box. Take family pictures in a more natural environment… a family-oriented environment… like a tailgate party… or a football stadium…

  59. PowderPuff September 19, 2012 9:20 am

IWWTHM, ah yes…I was golfing up there last Thursday and they were out there being quite vocal along Kamehameha Highway getting everyone to vote. Bryson, aw man…that is awful to have your wedding marred by a strike…hopefully they settle (if they walk out) and are back to work by her wedding date.

  63. SAWARRIOR September 19, 2012 9:22 am

…. or should i say “deal”.

  64. BigWave96744 September 19, 2012 9:23 am

On a saturday, Turtle Bay to Kaneohe to Halawa is not a fast short cut. Hour half minimum.

If its pouring like today on the Eastside, the Waikane bridge could overflow 🙂

  65. Hodad September 19, 2012 9:27 am

Orther than Ault, the only jerk visiting coache I met (and i met them all during Von Appen and June Jones days, was John L. Smith when he was at Michigan State and gary barnett when he was at Northwestern. All of the others, including the Cincy coach Rick Minter and the Houston coach (forget his name), were decent guys. The best, IMHO, were dana Dimmel when he was at Wyoming and John Robinson at UNLV. Oh yeah, probably the nicest was John Ralston (San Jose) in what I think was one of his last games.

Smith thought the refs were Hawaii homers and Barnett ran it up. Smith now at Arky is proving to be the ultimate nutcase in coaching. The jerk for Cincinnati was their AD who was screaming at the refs all night while his palyers were trsh talking.

  66. A-House September 19, 2012 9:28 am

    WarriorNY:

nice picture – how far did you advance in the poker tournament?

What “town” on Molokai? My UH roommate grew up in that “pineapple” community on top of the hill looking towards Oahu.

  67. jimmy the lock September 19, 2012 9:30 am

On a Saturday, Turtle Bay to Wahiawa to Halawa is not a fast short cut. 45 minute minimum. That’s with the Karsten Thot Bridge. 🙂

  68. Stephen Tsai September 19, 2012 9:31 am

    JoJo:

Game starts at 4:30 p.m., not 6, so now you can go.

  69. Stephen Tsai September 19, 2012 9:32 am

… And the tailgate starts on Thursday, for some.

  70. Stephen Tsai September 19, 2012 9:33 am

And that’s assuming the special-duty escorts show up.

    Uh, I mean, police escorts.

I think special-duty escorts are paid by the hour.

  71. Stephen Tsai September 19, 2012 9:35 am

Now that UH practices in the afternoon, I get to watch Wings reruns.

I miss the ’90s. Where have you gone Fay, Roy and Helen?

  72. Hawkpeter September 19, 2012 9:38 am

ST, can you tell us any more about the detail today RE Daley’s sponsorship by a dairy company? I wouldn’t have thought that was possible under NCAA rules.

  73. BigWave96744 September 19, 2012 9:38 am

Maybe KoaMahu can set up Nevada with some special duty escorts.. HUUUUUI!!!!!

  74. jimmy the lock September 19, 2012 9:42 am

Don’t Nike and Under Armour sponsor? Don’t see why a dairy can’t.

  75. jimmy the lock September 19, 2012 9:43 am

No forget, Wahine VB plays today. Watch it on the Big West stream.

  76. letsgowarriors September 19, 2012 9:43 am

hawkpeter, i am assuming that was a joke, in regards to the sponsorship. say, instead of his weight gain being due to CytoSport (muscle milk and cytomax), his weight gain is due to Meadow Gold. milk and juice.

  77. letsgowarriors September 19, 2012 9:45 am

or maybe meadow gold sponsors the football team and supplies them w milk and juice.

  78. jimmy the lock September 19, 2012 9:48 am

Now if that sponsor uses that player in a commercial endorsing the product then you are crossing the sideline out of bounds.

  79. A-House September 19, 2012 9:55 am

    #78:

IIRC, the basketball team got dinged for using UH players in the background of a auto commerical – implying that they approved of the cars for sale by the dealership.

Wasn’t Rick Petino a first or second year coach at UH that year?

am I getting my “facts” or memory all homajagged again?

  80. A-House September 19, 2012 9:57 am

questions are useful because it’s not a statement of fact, but asking for help from others who are more knowledgable than me.

  81. Buffoman September 19, 2012 9:59 am

I read Dave’s editorial in today’s paper and could not agree more, and I drink beer.

A few years back, I decided I wanted to go see UH play at UNLV, there were so many fights in the stands it was just nuts. I had my family with me and they said they’d never go back to UNLV to watch a UH game…ever. There were so may drunk people around.

It seems that things are getting that way a Aloha Stadium. I’ve since given up my season tickets for PPV, but if there’s even a half truth to what was written, it’s bad.

I also agree that the State is just setting itself up for a major lawsuit as someone will get seriously injured due to an alcohol fueled melee. Too bad.

  82. Kevin September 19, 2012 10:05 am

Someone on the WSN message board claims the fight this past Saturday was really just rowdy military folks back from deployment getting into it with each other.

    I dunno..

I suggested years ago that the stadium cease alcohol sales during the halftime and that the security with the assistance of HPD or sheriffs monitor DUI-like checks at the entrances to stop people that appear to be too drunk to enter the game.

  83. jimmy the lock September 19, 2012 10:05 am

    @A-House

Ahh, the Bruce O’Neil era, or error.

  84. Will-I-Am September 19, 2012 10:05 am

    WarriorNYC,

Great write up. I was left with 2 questions after it though.

1: What is the best finish you have had in the poker world tour?

2: Is that what you do for a living?

  85. tommui September 19, 2012 10:05 am

    #78 Jimmy the Lock

    #79 A-House

You are referring to the “Cutter (Ford) Five”. Bruce O’Neil was the head coach and Rick Petino was an asst. coach.

#69 ST…Now now…the tailgates usually don’t get started to at the earliest Friday….LOL

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Marching Band Asking For Fan Support Of Fund Drive

The UH marching band is conducting a fund drive to raise money to repair, maintain, and replace wind, brass, and percussion instruments, as well as uniforms, flags, etc. The funds will also be used to assist with travel costs to an away football game. 88. MattyBoy September 19, 2012 10:38 am

What’s up with the low ticket sales for the football game this week? I was reading on another blog that ticket sales are down from last weeks game against Lamar. Is that true? What’s up with that?

  89. Kevin September 19, 2012 10:44 am

4:30PM is too early? Too hot with the sun still out?

There are people in Hawaii that use excuses like that.

    88. Good reminder, Tom. WDoc- thank you for posting the initial link.

  92. Otto September 19, 2012 10:56 am

Don’t forget, the game is not on PPV. It is on regular cable NBC Sports Network (regular cable ch 19, digital ch 200-something?)…..

H5-0. If the crew is nice, how come that veterans tour operator made hu-hu about something that happened at Punchbowl? Articles or letters to the editor was in the Tizer for several days.

Pitino was an assistant or grad assistant, and got promoted to interim coach for several games at the end of the season after everyone else got fired because on the NCAA violations. Something happened and now he doesn’t mention his time in Hawaii nor list it on his resume.

  93. WarriorNY September 19, 2012 11:06 am

    al,

    I hope I don’t give off too old a vibe… haha

    PP,

No worries haha, I saw it posted on here this morning and was kind of surprised but in a good way…

    A-House & Will-I-AM,

I play mostly the cash games now but used to play quite a bit online. The picture was taken at the WSOP main event last year. My brother is the real poker pro in the family. He nearly won his first bracelet at the WSOP in the Heads Up event this year. He got really deep in the Main Event this year as well.

  94. Otto September 19, 2012 11:14 am

What music were they going to play when the team walk in? I noticed the band didn’t play the H5-0 theme… how come no complaints? JJ did the same thing (changed the music), and plenny complaints… also no cheerleader on the surf board…

  95. BigWave96744 September 19, 2012 11:23 am

The fight this past weekend is on youtube.

    Search Aloha Stadium Fight 2012

    Says they were Texas Marines.

Weird thing is everyone involved was wearing Hawaii tee shirts.

Chawan_Cut was near the action but out of harms way

  96. NYUHTX September 19, 2012 11:30 am

Ah yes, today’s reminder of how the WAC got snookered. Makes the Wonder fiasco seem so petty.

  97. Kaneohe Resident September 19, 2012 11:37 am

I can’t recall the last time I sat and watched an entire UH football game; however, I watched the entire Lamar game and came with this conclusion. This is the first time I can recall not seeing any fat players on the UH team. The entire team looked lean, and I guess Lamar will agree with me, mean. I liked the no long hair hanging out from their helmets look. This year’s team really looked like a football TEAM! I also enjoy watching the players being interviewed after practice/games WEARING shirts and not bare chested. After all, you’re being allowed into my home, so be respectable.

Watched the Coach Chow’s TV show and I wondered with the past two coaches, did they ever acknowledge the UH band leader, Nakamura? From Chow’s comments pertaining to the students, I get that he sincerely wants the students to enjoy the football games and enjoy their college experience. Since I went to UH in the early 60’s, collegiate football was almost non-existant. Playing the Tantalus Rangers didn’t count. Enjoyed basketball in Klum gym though.

GO BOWS! (Just showing you that I’m an old school alumni of UH.)

  98. Cali76 September 19, 2012 11:40 am

Where can we watch the game online?

  99. Kevin September 19, 2012 11:42 am

Players are being interviewed in the actual homes of Hawaii residents now?

3 great tickets left for SDSU @$23 each–game almost sold out!

Hawaii-San Diego St in San Diego on Oct. 6: @$23 each for 40 yard line SIDELINE SEATS (these just became available but only few left) in the Plaza level one level above the field (or $16 for 20 yard line field level 15-24 rows up) all behind our Warriors bench (UH ticket office price is $26 each). FIREWORKS SHOW right after the game! This will be a critical conference game and our boys need your support; so far we have almost 200 Warrior fans in our group; including former great players Gary Allen, Tim Grasso, JR Directo & Nicky Clark.

Hawaii-Fresno St in Fresno on Nov. 3: I have 50 yard sideline seats right behind our Warrior bench for $60 each in Section 31; rows 9 thru 12—you can reach out and touch the players! This will be another critical conference game; so far we have almost 80 Warrior fans in our group.

    email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

It looked like the participants of the fight at Aloha Stadium were military…The police ended up NOT arresting any of the combatants, although they we both drunk and disorderly. I suggest they has some military police at the games do deal with these folks or at least, report them to their COs. I’m sure the military doesn’t want any bad publicity or their soldiers to promote ill-will in the community. I hope some of the military brass watches the You Tube video and address the situation with the participants.

Ahh I see some of you have already thought about the bridge in Wahiawa and the Turtle Bay strike. I’m so happy that the wolfpack will be in a no distraction area so will not make any further comments. Do not let fans who had too much in the parking lot into the stadium to spoil the game for the rest of the fans. It’s just the small few idiots who no can handle their booze and choose to act like fools. The state or should I say the Stadium Authority Board are letting profits dictate common sense.

  110. madeinhawaii September 19, 2012 12:51 pm

They should cordon a section for the inebriated. If someone is found inebriated, they should be escorted to that area to sober up, someone comes to pick them up, or to sit until the game is over.

Many mahalos Tom K for the tickets to the SDSU game.

    From a former players perspective:

I attended Warrior practice yesterday. What a difference a year makes. Players ran from station to station at the sound of the horn (warning: do not stand by the timer at practice when he toots the horn), timed segments were intense in terms of work, Tommy has them doing plyometrics to decrease injuries, coach’s had the players on task for the entire segments. The put it bluntly, the practice ran like clockwork. How refreshing!!!

I don’t Nevada is going to get the kind of yardage in there past games. This Hawaii defense is going to carry this team. Me likes what I have seen so far from the first two games. Remember USC could not run against Hawaii.

  121. Buffoman September 19, 2012 1:59 pm

If tickets sales for the upcoming game has been slow, I am not surprised…that’s how Hawaii fans are. I do believe that if the defense shuts out or comes close to shutting out Nevada and special teams looks like they did against Lamar, more people will start to fill seats. Hawaii fans are funny that way. The enjoy the points on the board, but they really like the team with a stout defense, especially against an opponent who supposedly has the “weapons” to pile it on. This is an important game for the program.

Hawaii loves defense as we saw during the Tomey era. Not taking anything away from Coach’s offense as I know it will come around and be quite exciting (something the Tomey era struggled with).

Just be patient and watch the picture start to take form. Coach knows what he is doing and I for one trust the product he is putting on the field.

  125. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 19, 2012 2:06 pm

Btw, I sent an email to Carl Clapp and Coach Chow suggesting that UHAD send out a thank you message email to all students/faculty for attending the game.

My suggestion didn’t fall on deaf ears! 🙂

The following was sent out today.

    ——

    Aloha UH Manoa students:

There were many things that were pleasing about our football team’s home-opening win last Saturday, but none was more gratifying than the 1,803 UH Manoa students who turned out to cheer on the Warriors. Thanks so much to those who came!

The students were enthusiastic, spirited and made their presence known by waving pompons and rally towels, while cheering loudly. Now, that’s the type of atmosphere we need at all of our home games, so the team plays its best and everyone gets to experience a top-notch collegiate football environment.

Please take full advantage of the free bus transportation from campus to Aloha Stadium and the ease of simply showing your valid UH Manoa identification cards in order to enter the stadium at Gates 1, 7 or 8.

Three thousand (3,000) green and white pompons will be distributed in the student sections before the game. Also, UH Manoa students will have the chance to compete in the on-field “Quarterback Challenge” and win a Vacations Hawaii Trip to Las Vegas during the first timeout of the fourth quarter (register pre-game at Gate 7).

This Saturday, we play our inaugural Mountain West Conference game at 4:30 p.m. against a tough Nevada squad on national television. Please come and support the team, while grabbing some television time for yourself as part of a UH student section that is going to demonstrate to the country the passion and pride of “Warrior Nation.”

    Mahalo,

    Norm Chow

    Head Football Coach

About the alcohol sales at the stadium: i’ve been to Big 10/Pac 10 (back then) football games where there are a TON of drunks in the crowd. You’ve never seen so many people taking swigs from hidden flasks full of hard alcohol. I’ve even seen the extreme of hiding booze in a ziploc baggie to thwart the metal detectors. People will always find a way to get hammered if that’s what they want to do, regardless of the stadium being “dry” or not.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  145. (Jesse) James September 19, 2012 3:17 pm

#142 Jack Flash….and like one of the posters on Reardon’s story said, “At 8.50 a beer, are people really getting hammered simply by drinking in the stadium?” I think most of the buttheads who get all superman in the stadium because of too much booze get hammered before they’re even in the stadium…or at least close to it.

I for one don’t buy beer in the stadium simply because for $8.50, I can almost buy a 12 pack at Foodland…..

  146. gigi-hawaii September 19, 2012 3:22 pm

I drink just one beer during the game — and that’s at home!

    Yay for PPV!

  147. gigi-hawaii September 19, 2012 3:24 pm

Didn’t know they sell parking stalls at the Stadium Mall.

Hubby had to park illegally in order to buy a sub from Subway prior to the game.

  148. gigi-hawaii September 19, 2012 3:27 pm

    Good luck to Salas!

Hope he uses the practice squad as a stepping stone to something better.

  149. Aaron September 19, 2012 3:28 pm

#146 – do you know how hard it is to maintain your buzz after walking into the stadium and to your seat without buying a drink inside the stadium? plus, most of the fights occur after the 1st quarter – you rarely see a fight near the beginning of the game. i guarantee that it’s the alcohol sales inside the stadium that cause the fights much more than alcohol consumed in the parking lot.

  150. BigHiloFan2 September 19, 2012 3:30 pm

  153. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 19, 2012 3:39 pm

With the conversion of UH Webmail (hosted by UH and really antiquated) to a gmail platform, more and more students are using their UH mail as their primary email. What does that mean? They are actually reading their UH mail accounts.

This was a just a small yet free method of getting the “mahalo” out to the students.

Brad Jones apparently took the lead on this. I didn’t initially email him but I received a reply from him and Carl.

  154. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 19, 2012 3:39 pm

    Thanks, Don!

  155. (Jesse) James September 19, 2012 3:40 pm

#150 Aaron..that may be…but I know guys who pound maybe 8 – 10 beers before going into the stadium…and they seem pretty toasty during the first quarter…and some people I know, I’m not naming names, begin tailgating and imbibing around 9:00 a.m. LOL

All I’m saying is that drinking 6 beers in the stadium would cost a cool $51 plus tip if you are so inclined. That’s a large chunk of change to get plastered at a game versus buying 4 12 packs for that price.

  156. (Jesse) James September 19, 2012 3:45 pm

Also, not to imply that no alcohol in the stadium wouldn’t solve some of the problems. After all I did say that guys may be close to getting hammered before they enter the stadium….so that one beer or two may put them over the top while in the stadium.

I would be interested in seeing the numbers as to how many beers were sold at the stadium during any given game. That would be really telling…

  157. (Jesse) James September 19, 2012 3:47 pm

Hey IWWTHM…..Where were you this past Saturday??? How come you didn’t stop by the T-gate???

  158. madeinhawaii September 19, 2012 3:53 pm

So, are our Warriors ready for Nevada’s hurry-up, 16-seconds-between-plays offense?

  159. madeinhawaii September 19, 2012 3:54 pm

Got to be ready to rotate defensive players in just about every first down… Hopefully we don’t give them too many of those.

  160. (Jesse) James September 19, 2012 3:54 pm

#159 Always READY….or at least that should be the answer… 🙂

  161. Kevin September 19, 2012 3:56 pm

    James,

I think the combination of zero alcohol sales inside plus having HPD work with stadium ushers and security at the entrance gates to do a visual check of people that may be too drunk to enter will cut back issues big time.

Banning alcohol on the premises in the parking lot is too Nazi-esque and only punishes the 95% of people that do drink and can handle their liquor and or know what their limit is.

  162. jm2375 September 19, 2012 4:04 pm

Boy, some people must have lost a lot of money on the game, but sheesh, it’s only a game (and in the 2nd week)…

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/redskins-josh-morgan-receives-death-threats-twitter-costly-190946297–nfl.html

  163. gigi-hawaii September 19, 2012 4:07 pm

No mention of women getting into fights during the game?

    Don’t they drink, too?

    Hmmm.

  164. wafan September 19, 2012 4:10 pm

Reser Stadium (OSU) allows drinking outside the stadium before and after, and during halftime. Did not notice any problems the other year when the Warriors played there.

Security was present at the gates to stop or discourage, I guess, those fans who were ready to do a face plant.

  165. Buffoman September 19, 2012 4:10 pm

If beer sales were so inconsequential (sp?) to the Stadium Authority, they would have made the call to simply be like most other college venues and cut sales completely. Apparently, the sponsorship from beer companies and the sales are just too profitable for them to act otherwise.

It really boils down to dollars.

I mean the risk for bad publicity, unhappy spectators and a potential lawsuit does not appear to be enough for them to cut the beer. It has to be the dollars.

  166. wafan September 19, 2012 4:15 pm

Dunno if it is just my perception or not. Does it seem Hawai’i has a high tolerance of public intoxication? Just seems that way to me.

‘Course, you can see the same behavior at the Silver Bowl (UNLV) during UH games. Or, are the number and intensity of fights similar or lower when other schools play there, too?

  167. Bigislandkurt September 19, 2012 4:21 pm

Could it be that in Hawaii, folks just dodoknowhowfoact when they drink? IF people are getting hammered at other stadiums (pac12 included), why is it that UH got more fights in the stands? Maybe we have more stupid people in Hawaii? Beefing has been such a part of the culture of Hawaii. “legal beefs” in the MMA ring are some of the most popular venues in the islands. Beefs is as part of the local Hawaii experience as is cold rice and teri chicken. It’s not a new phenomenon either. I remember my older uncles telling me about how boxing matches were some of the greatest events of days gone by. Not to mention the drunken brawls that would also happen at social dances and other events. I am not making no excuses because I’m sick of it too. Beefs in the stadium stands are LAME. Those beefing are LAME. No mo respect.

    BIK

  169. wafan September 19, 2012 4:26 pm

    Random question.

Why do women (apparently wannabe’s, too) shave their eyebrows off only to draw them back on? Crooked or uneven, no less.

A couple of years ago one of my girls came to school with a different “expression” on her face every day. Angry, questioning, lost, happy, surprised, . . . based solely on the positioning of her hand drawn eyebrows. It was difficult not to laugh and to figure out what she was really feeling that day. One day she had different colored brows because she ran out of one color and had to use a different pencil(?) for the other.

  170. jojo ® September 19, 2012 4:31 pm

wafan, I’ve decided to go hippie and let my eyebrows grow back. I don’t know why I did the naked eyebrow

  171. wafan September 19, 2012 4:41 pm

    jojo . . .

Got carried away plucking, waxing, Nair, shaving?

  172. wafan September 19, 2012 4:43 pm

Andm hope you are not going completely hippie. HA!

  173. Kevin September 19, 2012 4:43 pm

Get people fighting in the stands, get people telling others to sit down and be quiet at a sporting event. Get people knitting and reading the newspaper. People quiet on 3rd down when we are on D. Get people letting their goddamn kids run around up and down the stairs and various venues and throwing trash over the railings, get people making house on the front lawn façade of a stadium and they are not even part of the home team….

Pretty sure no one here watches “Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia”, but they could make a four part episode to try to capture the stupid diversity of some Hawaii people that seem to be awkward in public settings.

  174. Kevin September 19, 2012 4:46 pm

    Wafan,

The modern day hippie is more like a douche-bag “hipster”. The only difference is they dress a little better than the hippies of the 60’s and smell better at least.

Pseudo-intellectuals and as a resident of the PNW, head down to PORTLAND, OR and you will find them all over the place.

I would weigh in on the pros and cons of the drinking issue but it is a something that UH can not control. But in the context of the ‘big picture it is quite telling.

UH does not get any revenue from concessions including beer.

This is a stadium authority/commission issue. Thus, it becomes quite political.

Also, look at the ‘big donors’ to UH Athletics. Do you really think UH Athletics wants to lose this source of revenue (check out the banner heading on UH Athletics at http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2012/9/18/FB_0918121221.aspx?path=football

Why do we see other NCAA football venues not allowing beer/wine sales in stadiums during games?

  181. d1shima September 19, 2012 5:47 pm

Hey! Wats wrong with PDX? 👿

…actually, only ever spent a few nights in Portland Civic Center, several overnight stays near PDX, but mostly down the 99 and along the Oregon Coast (which is stunningly beautiful!)

    Great memories…*tsigh*

Did I mention get casinos? 😈

  182. d1shima September 19, 2012 5:56 pm

Been to several CB venues on the mainland and would definitely rank Sam Boyd Stadium as THE worst experience. Afternoon beer sales and the desert sunshine make for a pretty explosive mix.

Other stadia I have visited that don’t sell alcohol seem to have well-controlled, fun-oriented fans.

Prolly the most unique situation I have seen is B$-You’s where alcohol is OK in the parking lot but no sales inside the stadium. The stadium has an open end and at halftime fans stream out to the parking lot for a quick one (or 2) and come back in for the third quarter.

With the scanners that are used now maybe something like that could be done here with a re-scan out and re-re-scan back in.

*If you too bombed and lose your ticket while you outside, oh well…

  183. d1shima September 19, 2012 6:01 pm

If they going check fans for CWI (Cheering While Intoxicated) when they walking in why not put 4×4 beams for erryboddy to walk on while they approach the gate. If no can, no can!

  184. CoolEthan September 19, 2012 6:08 pm

    Kevin, on # 174

    Bingo.

    Couldn’t concur more.

Most of the complaincency from those fans just need to sit aside at home, knit sweaters, then ring a bell when they are ready to cheer for the team.

Except for the probability of giving up some big gains, the UH run defense should be stout. USC couldn’t run and don’t expect Nevada to do much better despite their stats. Right now the front seven appear to be the strength of the D. On O, given that this will be the third time they have played together, the coaches know what to tweak to make them better and we should see some new plays. Expect to see Will Gregory in the endzone a couple of times.

If they banned alcohol at the stadium there wil still be fights.

Sadly, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets beaten to a pulp or worse at the hands of some alcohol fueled act of violence on Stadium grounds, resulting in the State gets its ass sued and having to pay up $$$ to the victim. People in positions of authority in Hawaii are really “hard head” often, and it takes some tragedy before something is done.

Kind of like Gen MacArthur disregarding and ignoring reports of a large force of Chinese troops assembling on the Yalu River during the Korean War.

Real “cute” of Hawaii News Now in their selective coverage of the fight last Saturday. They used footage of students having a beer on campus at the Manoa Gardens Bar as they covered the story.

The uneducated sees this in light of the story about the fight and might assume the UH Manoa students were involved…

    Again… FALSE.

People that actually go to the games know exactly the demographic starting problems and a lot of them are old enough to the be the parents or uncles of students.

    Howzit, everyone!

Ah… home game or Sam Boyd game, here comes the topic of banning alcohol sales in the stadium again!

All I know is… The only other stadium I went to for a NCAA football game was the Big House, and that stadium is dry. Sure, all kinds of drinking outside, but not a single lick of brew sold inside. And weird thing… people are actually still involved in the game! Although, I’m sure my friends wish they were drunk after Appy State came through.

When I was stationed in Korea the second time, back in the late 80’s through early 90’s, there was this Korean comedienne named Kim Mi Hwa on this hilarious show… bossy as most Korean women are… with this huge, thick, furry, unibrow! Wish we’d taped some of it to watch these many years later.
