Not sure of the status of Clapps application for AD at Montana, but some people think that the former AD from Washington State is in the lead. So far, there has been one internal and two external candidates for the Montana job. If Clapp doesn’t get the nod, there is always the prospect of applying for the Nevada AD position next year. According to Ault, he doesn’t care if the candidate is external or internal. He just wants someone that puts the football program at the forefront.

Speaking of Rolo, just read Dan Hinxman’s column (Dan Hinxman). He believes Ault should hand over the reins of offensive play calling to Rolo. I think Mr. Hinxman is still fuming about Aults play calling on Nevada’s last possession against Southern Florida.

Guess they decided on hiring internally.

I have to say, I give Graves a lot of credit for sticking it out. Many QBs in his circumstance would have asked for a transfer. He was a star coming out of HS, a highly touted QB going into college prepped to be to be next in line after backing up Moniz. Then a new coach comes in with a whole new system, gets bumped from the number one spot and gets moved to a whole different position. To top it off, he doesn’t make the roster for UH’s biggest game this year in his home town. I could just imagine how disappointed he was. Many times, when one experiences a personal loss like he did and then going back home, one would expect to just say “move on and try something else” in his situation, maybe another school where he could be the starting QB. However, Graves chose to stick it out and power through which really says alot about his character- no sense of entitlement, humble, persistent, team player, loyal, hard worker. I hope he reads this and know that fans are grateful and appreciate having a quality player for the Warriors and serve as a wonderful role model for our keikis.

#21 SAWARRIOR – after boise gets the aq slot to a bcs bowl, then the hog cheese mongers of the bcs will strip the big pathetic east of their aq status. boise and sdst will no longer reap benefits from membership in the big east and will look for another conference closer to home. doubt if the pac will consider either boise or sdst, the wac will be history, and all that’s left is the mwc. another senario (which is coming soon too, garans) is a playoff system and the bcs bowls reverting back to the original formulas (sec in the sugar, acc or big 12 in the orange, big 10 and pac in the rose, etc.) for selecting teams which means the big east will lose their aq to a bcs bowl. in a few years you will see boise back in aloha stadium getting chowdown by UH.

Thank you for your kind words about David Graves. He came to Hawaii to play for Hawaii. He is a Warrior, he is a team player, he is loyal. He will play any position Coach Chow assigns to him. Thank you to the others here who have said good things about his character and leadership. Your support is greatly appreciated.

#49 I totally agree with you. Right now the Big East are trying to work a tie-in with the Orange Bowl, i don’t see that happening, especially with a weaker Big East in 2014.

David Graves is such a loyal, unselfish team player! I would bet he would volunteer to replace Fehoko Vili as team mascot or volunteer to be the water boy during breaks. He is such an inspiration like Robocop and S. Harding.

From what I understand, the AD does the scheduling for football. For all other sports, scheduling is done by the coach (or whichever assistant it get delegated too). Football schedules are typically done years in advance, while other sports are typically year by year. Football provides the biggest income (and biggest expense), so they give that responsiblity to the AD.

The University of Hawaii-Manoa has begun soliciting applications for a permanent athletic director.

The opening, which invites applications “for best consideration” by Sept. 28, was posted on the school’s website today.

It does not list a salary.

Former athletic director Jim Donovan’s contract listed an annual salary of $240,000.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, three years of athletic administration experience, demonstrated fiscal integrity and expertise.

Rockne Freitas has been acting athletic director since July 11 and has so far said he will not apply.

I’ve been a David Graves from the moment we signed that duel-threat QB out of Cali who was also a musician. My respect for him increased exponentially during these early stages of the Norm Chow era. Most young folks (and their parents) would have had their feelings so hurt that they would immediately search for other options. Not Graves. Talk about a model team player. I’m glad he’s back in the QB mix. He deserves all the good that will come his way.

Buffoman — I used to go to Meg’s often in the early 70’s. Right next door was a Korean errr, pupu and beverage place I used to frequent in those days. Still has one I think… <b<but I stopped at Meg’s last year to see how things changed.

The cook–a slender Japanese guy, was still at the grill in his spotless white tee shirt just as I remembered. Needless to say, the food has not changed much with the same cook still active, but the menu has expanded.

I know it’s very early in the season, but is next years schedule complete? Isn’t that the athletic director’s job? I hope all this shuffling or even late hiring (Jan.) of the AD doesn’t screw up the scheduling. With all this conference’s title playoffs, it is getting harder and harder for UH to complete their schedule.

JD already took care of the scheduling. The ideal schedule will have 4 attractive D-IA schools and then either a D-IAA school (so UH gets an extra home game instead of having to go on the road) or staying with 12 schools so that UH has an extra bye week. Most schools would stay with just 4 nonconference games since bye weeks are important. If the MWC has a title game, the only way that UH could play 13 games in a 13-week season would be to have ZERO bye weeks…that is rough on the health and academics of the players.

I heard that some conferences are proposing that departing teams lose their TV rights for 4-5 years, so could be upwards of $100M. That would effectively put a kibbosh on conference realignments. Remember, the big money for the AQ conferences is the TV rights.

The Big 12 schools signed a *13-year* grant of TV rights to their conference. That means that if any Big 12 school wanted to leave the conference, they wouldn’t have TV rights for 13 years. In other words, no school is leaving the Big 12 for 13 years.

Seeing as how the Big 12 schools will make more from TV than ANY other conference now, they really have no reason to go anywhere else. Even a school like Kansas State will get the $20 mil and add a few mil for its local TV deal, which puts it above USC and Florida.

The Big 10 schools also signed away their TV rights to their conference. The Big East i apparently trying to get TV right granted also as part of their new TV deal…one reason why Notre Dame had to jump now if they ever were going to jump.

Re #132, I think Fox will find out, just as ESPN did with the LHN, that there isn’t a whole lot of national or even regional demand for a network focused on showing just one school’s events.

If there isn’t a conference network like the Big 10 or Pac 12 network showing a school’s events, then I think the practical and viable alternative is the OC Sports Channel approach of televising those events in that school’s local cable market and streaming the events to the rest of the world over the internet.

Dear UH Manoa Ohana,

Since arriving at Manoa, I have spoken personally with many of you. We have had a chance to get to know each other and exchange ideas and opinions, person to person. I have been very impressed by the passion, commitment and quality of our faculty, staff and students here. I have met some of the best scholars and educators that it has been my privilege to know. Unfortunately, there has not been enough time for me to speak with most of you in person.

I am excited about advancing the campus in our two primary missions: scholarship that has impact, and the academics to help our students find their passions. To that end, I want to engage the community in dialog on a regular basis. You have not heard anything from me directly regarding what took place since the Stevie Wonder concert was cancelled. With all of the controversy swirling about right now, that is something I would like to remedy.

The members of our UH Manoa community are justifiably distressed by what they have seen and heard regarding the failed concert and the search for a new Athletics Director. Partial facts, rumors and personal allegiances have all had a part in raising the temperature of the discussion. It is important that all of us who care deeply about the University and its people have facts to deal with before making our conclusions. That is the purpose of this email.

I begin by saying that, while I inherited the failed concert situation, I have made my share of missteps in communication since arriving. My public outreach was less than satisfying for all concerned, because I was not able to provide a lot of details, either because the investigation was ongoing or because of legal restrictions. People had a right to know that at the time. With respect to the failures of checks and balances, and general judgment that should have prevented the loss of $200,000: I have instituted measures to prevent this from happening again. In addition, the Board of Regents has formed a group to ensure that our policies and procedures are both sound and efficient.

I have heard from many of you who have said that Jim Donovan should be returned to the position of Athletics Director. While it is true that the decision had already been made not to extend his contract, I was the one who requested that Dr. Rockne Freitas step in as interim Athletics Director and that Jim be reassigned. My decision to do this was based on many conversations with people within and outside the Athletics program. While I did and still do praise Jim’s commitment to UH and his many talents, I concluded that it was in the best interest of the Athletics program and our students to reassign him. I stand by that decision. The timing of Jim’s reassignment made a difficult situation more complicated and confusing and I regret that. I very much appreciate the support of my decision by the University President and members of the Board of Regents.

I approached campus and community leaders and asked them to serve on a Search Advisory Committee to find candidates for the position of Athletics Director. Accepting the challenge in the current climate was something each member had to consider carefully. Their commitment to the University should be applauded.

As you are probably aware, a few days after formation of the Committee, a letter signed by nearly every coach in the Athletics Department was sent to me, indicating their support for Dr. Freitas’ leadership. In the letter, they requested that he be appointed permanent AD. This event was followed by reactions on multiple sides of the issue. However the Search Advisory Committee weighs the contents of the coaches’ letter, what they decide the role of the three coaches named to the Committee should be, and whatever names they recommend for the position of Athletics Director, there will be some who will disagree with the Committee’s recommendation. I ask that the Committee members be given the space to do what has been asked of them. The Search Advisory Committee will publish updates periodically to keep us all informed, but their deliberations should be respected as confidential.

It is clear from all that has happened that there are many who are intensely interested in and care about our University. We have had our challenges, and we have taken action to rise to meet them. Please don’t allow what has happened to distract or discourage you. Now is a time for the entire community to come together and support one another. We are all in the same canoe. We can only move forward if we are all paddling in the same direction.

Athletics is very important to the UH community, but it is only a part of what we do. We must not lose sight of the preeminence of our academic mission, our students, faculty and staff. They all need and deserve our support and attention. This is a place where students’ lives are transformed. Our research has tremendous impact and helps those in our community and around the world. This week, the news included reports of our John A. Burns School of Medicine faculty, staff and students helping the homeless in our community, and about our UH Cancer Center discovering critical new information about fatal cancers. The greatness of our University ties into the greatness of our State. What we do here affects everyone. Wisdom, common sense, integrity and openness of spirit are cherished values here in our islands. Let’s show the world what working with aloha really means.

For those of you who are wondering why $6 million is being spent on replacing the roof and the 5th floor lanai: The Hawaii State Capitol opened on March 16, 1969. Although significant upgrades were done to the building in the early 1990s, the roof and the lanai area is over 43 years old.

Many of the ceilings in rooms on the fourth floor under the lanai area leak.

I actually think that Fox will be just fine with their deal with Oklahoma. Hawaii has about 1.4 mil people and was been making $2.5 mil for PPV. Oklahoma has 3.8 mil people and they also have a lot of the market in Texas (26 mil people)–they are the same distance from Dallas as Austin is and have a lot of alumni in that area, for example.

Most of the Fox deal with Oklahoma is for regional coverage, but their region has more people and is worth more money than UH’s in comparison. Oklahoma just had their latest game on PPV for $40 and sales were reportedly very high. The national games shown on Fox College Sports will probably be 1 football game, lots of men’s basketball games (Oklahoma vs. Kansas is often not shown on national TV, Fox College Sports will grab that, and sometimes Oklahoma vs. Texas was not shown before), and other sports will probably be shown (volleyball, softball, soccer) if Oklahoma is doing well and they don’t want to just show repeats of other events like they do now.

Since Kansas gets $8.5 mil already from their local TV deal, I wouldn’t be surprised if Oklahoma got $10 mil from Fox.

It is a long NFL season and injuries take a toll on every team’s roster. Hopefully Pollard will get a call later this season.
