No stopping Sampson

Let’s suppose you’re going to have ACL surgery in another week. I’m sure most of us would be limping along, with that pained expression one gets thinking about the Wonder Gate mess.

But not receiver Allen Sampson, who is awaiting his mother’s arrival from Florida before undergoing what should be season-ending knee surgery. Sampson is still participating in drills, in full uniform. Yes, he is not at full speed (although his average speed is your fastest speed). And, yes, he probably should be on the side holding a clipboard.

But, as the coaches say, Sampson just loves to play. And he’ll keep doing that … until they wheel him into the OR.

* * * * *

The Warriors still are fiddling with the active roster. We’re told they are expected to add about seven players, none of whom were on last year’s roster.

* * * * *

It was nice to see the return of Darius Bright. He even caught a scoring pass during drills.

* * * * *

Defensive end Desmond Dean is being held out of practice while he undergoes a series of medical tests.

* * * * *

The volleyball Warriors added:

• Siki Zarkovic, an outside hitter from Serbia

• Ian McKellar, a 6-7 left-handed opposite from London

• Ryan Leung, an outside hitter who graduated from Hawaii Baptist and played the past two years at Pepperdine

• Jace Olsen, a 6-7 outside hitter from Penn State

• Kainoa Mitchell, a Roosevelt grad who played at Orange Coast College.

* * * * *

UH coaches had a weight-loss competition, starting in June. Yesterday, volleyball coach Charlie Wade was declared the winner, having dropped 30 pounds.

Only once a year do we see the words “happy” and “Ralph” in the same sentence.

He’s militant, but we love him.

  8. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 2:50 am

Wade tells me they signed Zarkovic.

I asked him how the name is spelled.

    He says the usual way.

    I say, the usual way?

And he says, yes, the usual way.

Let’s hope I spelled it the usual way.

Still not getting the whole greenwood thing.

They did not want JD as AD but they wanted him somewhere.

Looking at it another way…they did not want JD as AD but they did not want to release him.

    WHY?

Why would you not want to release someone… especially someone who knows decades worth of much of the goings ons?

Perhaps you won’t release that person because there is a risk that person will talk. And as long as they are not legally bound in some way, there is a risk. Therefore, create a post, any post, and keep that person close.

As they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer right greenwood?

Why speculate? Because we will never get the truth.

  12. mo808 August 22, 2012 3:09 am

  14. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 3:18 am

    Moocher:

What UH should have done was said: “Jim, we love you. You’re fantastic. But we want to go in a different direction. We won’t be renewing you when your contract expires in March.”

Instead, it decided to get shady.

UH should have said: “The concert is canceled. We’ll refund your money.”

Instead, it told people about the missing money.

And so while the president says everything was a coincidence, she was the one who created the coincidence. JD was never told he would be out before the investigation.

Check the record and you’ll see why the president has gone through so many PR people.

  15. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 3:19 am

It actually was JD who once said: “When you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.”

    Quite prophetic.

Good luck to our Warriors as they prepare for battle. Regarding JD, fiasco is a good term for the situation. when things don’t add up, they just don’t add up, and that is pretty sad. how nice to find out about your career path via the media, after the fact.

let’s continue to support the Donovan family 🙂

    Happy Birthday, Ralph.

Just wuz going to have a brunch….but the tape worm made my loose my appetite, yuck!!

Back to do my laundry I guess; lots of energy today so just as well…..laters gangeeez!!

  26. BigHiloFan2 August 22, 2012 6:02 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

wow. we gotta lot of smart peeps on this blog. Got me really jact up! Cap W/Doc, you outdoing yourself today, lady. Good job. You too, PPuff. and Moocher and Bulla, you right.

    But first,

    Ralphie Ralphie Ralphie.

Happy Birthday belated Ralph. see you soon.

sooo….. I think Jim Donovan’s problems started about 3 years ago. He was supposed to be under the direction of the lady with the hat, the supporter of UH Athletics, but these two were overwhelmed by the obesity and nutrition expert. She can’t look at herself in the mirror, so she lookin on JD.

and the confluence of problems with WAC going down, UH having to find another home, getting pushed around by MWC in having to come up with $$$, all these kinds of problems overwhelming Virginia and JD, and RF in the background giving MRC support, then JD being left alone at UHAD when Virginia went on sabbatical, and JD not scheduling a 13th game, and I don’t know all the particulars about how or who hired the Coach Chow….

    all I know is this:

I don’t trust MRC Greenwood. Her story and Apple’s story, not talking about the same guy Donovan.

yep, the new job is a payoff to keep Jim Donovan quiet. I say the first question to the BOR and President MRC Greenwood today is:

    1. Is Jim Donovan a certain hire for UH for the next 3 years, no matter what happens today?

    2. If Jim Donovan is a certain hire, then put Jim on the stand and ask him point blank questions about life as the AD, including the scam, what he knows about the scame, where was he when the scam started. name names. and most important, what are his suggestions for making a better AD. pionted suggetions in public.

put some jet air and u’a on da problem. lots and lots and lots of u’a.

and get Guv and Rep. Takai in on da info packet. maybe they got their own questions.

  27. hightide August 22, 2012 6:05 am

The Board of regents since Lingle were political appointees not smart enough to deal with the academics

ruining the UNI at the highest levels. Let’s face it, it starts with them.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Happy belated birthday, Dr. Ralph!

Get well soon to Mr. Sampson and Mr. Dean!

    Welcome back Darius Bright!

Welcome to the new volleyball Warriors!! Nice to see the locals boys coming home. Do the transfers have to redshirt?

ST – I can see Charlie saying that to you. 🙄

    Nice going Charlie Wade!!

  29. BigHiloFan2 August 22, 2012 6:12 am

    Board of Rents.

Maybe all you’ll be shown is the final, sanitized version, of the “report.”

Ask for all draft version(s) of the report. We paid for them. when “they” tell you they don’t have any “draft” versions of the report, ask them who talked to who about the “draft” versions of the report. on the UH side. on the CSFW side. get down to the dirty ditty. you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by your detective work. you might even pat yourselves on the back and call yourselves “Colombo.”

because like some are alluding to on this blogsite, there is a 5 star smelly in da room.

Apparently the source was not al’s birdies. Good to have Darius back.

  31. BigHiloFan2 August 22, 2012 6:20 am

    Board of Rents,

we know you not going do nothing. no ifs anz or buts. the sooner you have your meeting, the sooner UHM can shut this down, say they had a public discussion, yada ya.

but this public meeting, if we’re lucky, should result in a further public meeting at the BOR.

since this is a “we got scammed” kinda deal, gotta ask who at the Attorney General’s office is the State representative investigating any potential criminal wrongdoing in Darolyn Lendio’s office, or any other UH office including fiscal and UHAthletics, or is any of that not covered in the “report?”

who engineered the “scope” of the investigation? i meant “scope of the report?”

Reallly, who engineered the size of the can of worms?

i’d like to borrow from the blog host’s reporteere. Sad.

    😆

  32. letsgowarriors August 22, 2012 6:21 am

    grimes is #2 now.

  33. Dan-O August 22, 2012 6:25 am

The surprising (or is it sad?) thing is that the “doings” of the upper campus don’t surprise me (or shock?) me anymore…..incompetent, and lacking common sense as usual.

  34. BigHiloFan2 August 22, 2012 6:33 am

so we know the investigation involved looking into JD and RS for wrongdoing, maybe criminal wrongdoing? and we know JD got cleared of any wrong doing.

but what about other entities in UH? were they investigated? who was investigated?

I wish i could go to the game today Doc, but going hit da road in Kona and Waimea. and i wish i rotten to da BOR. neva did. my ideas are said above. so have fun today Cap. but its not on you from me.

like i said, they not going do nothing. we not going learn anything until Jim is safely outta incountry.

yudda thought that he and RF coulda been friends. Oline guys and kumpa kumpa kine and all. 😆

  35. BigHiloFan2 August 22, 2012 6:36 am

actually, I’d really like to know who were da babuuzes who came up wit da Wanda deal, and who jumped into da Wanda Wagon, and got scammed. name da names.

so we can look at dem, both upper and lower campus, and say to ourselves, “i knew it.”

dems da babuuzes. den maybe day’ll no like be AD or interfere with AD. toxic job.

    😯 😆

  36. Moocher August 22, 2012 6:37 am

    Mr. Tsai 🙂

Totally agree. It surely could’ve been handled better from “highly educated” people.

The thing that gets to me and maybe 1 or 2 of the fans here is that UH with this batch of people at the helm is that we will never be told the truth. Example…Coach Mac “retired”.

Have a good day all 🙂

  37. Moocher August 22, 2012 6:43 am

BHF2….too funny. You should be on the board of regents.

    🙂

  38. Stretch August 22, 2012 6:44 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Was thinking about why Greenwood and Apple are TRYING make everything seem all good and covering their a$$ when they sound stupid. I forgot, it’s election season, everyone in the news is doing it right now

  39. tommui August 22, 2012 6:48 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I had submitted written testimony to the Board of Regents for today’s meeting which essentially asked when will the Cades Schutte report be released.

I also wrote that “I hope the University of Hawaii will not claim that the report is “privileged information” which, as you realize, will create a firestorm.”

Until the report is released to the public, everything and anything is speculation on our part.

Our friend BHF2 is a good lawyer – and I would imagine that if the report is not complete; if names of those involved in looking over the contract and approving it (the upper campus people, lawyers etc) – he and others will know the report was incomplete or censored. And I hope that the BOR will not claim privilege or personnel matters prevent a complete or partial release of the report

If we should get the unvarnished report, then we worry about accepting it totally or rally the troops with pitchforks and torches!

  40. mo808 August 22, 2012 6:52 am

I Wonder how many more Blunders Greenwood, Apple and their minions will do?

  44. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 7:17 am

Oh, I remember the night McMackin “retired.”

it was after the banquet. His family had gone home. He was summoned into the I‘ao room. I was looking at him and he had that defeated look on his face. It was one of those things where you knew if he went into the room he wouldn’t come out as the head coach. And I have no idea why he went in without his wife. Every man knows that a wife will fight for a better deal, for more money.

Sort of reminded me of this scene with Sal Tessio:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d30Y0n1nDH4

  45. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 7:23 am

    Tom Mui:

There were more than 50 people who wanted to testify today, mostly to request that JD be restored.

    I think Greenwood’s e-mail was a pre-emptive strike.

The message is: Don’t bother. He was going to be gone anyway.

The other message: Take the deal or don’t take the deal, but the AD job is gone.

I think the nice-nice comments are just to avoid any sort of future defamation suit, as well as terms of a confidential deal.

But whether you agree or not, JD was fired as AD.

  46. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 7:28 am

It just seems like they didn’t want to renew JD, but screwed up the way to get rid of him, by using the Wonder investigation and ensuing audit to uncover some dirt. In most cases, you’re supposed to get the dirt before you issue the punishment (timeout/paid leave/suspension). Because they screwed that up, they had to come back with a deal

Again, if they were smart. What they should have done was announce that JD is back, clear him of all wrongdoing in the Wonder situation and the audit, and let him have his AD job back. And then let that contract lapse. And in March, let him apply for the job that was created for him under Apple.

But this is what happens when you hire TV anchors to be PR people.

  47. tommui August 22, 2012 7:34 am

    ST #45 = Wow 50 people!

    Thanks for the info.

I did express the thought that JD should not be restored as AD unless there were certain conditions such as complete cooperation with the Upper Campus and Legislature – which you and I know would only a dream. To be completely cynical (but probably true), that will never happen.

JD has a family to support and needs the (additional) years for his retirement and so the “lateral” transfer is the best deal for him.

But to be completely pake, if Dr. Freitas is not going to be the AD now and if no one is in the wings, JD should finish the six months left as AD to avoid a vacuum even though he would be a lame-duck.

  48. chawan_cut August 22, 2012 7:40 am

  51. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 7:41 am

    Tommui:

    whoa – nasty! 🙂

  53. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 7:51 am

UH did a couple of sloppy things here.

First, it went into hiding when trouble first broke. Making JD stand by himself at that first news conference looked like a POW being forced to read from a script. Clearly the message was, hey, buddy, you’re on your own.

And then the president starts releasing e-mails. Now I know her intent: She doesn’t want her message filtered by the media. And that’s fine, except it doesn’t allow for follow-up questions, so when she writes something that might be debatable, then she can’t explain.

This all goes back to UH needing media relations people who relate to the media. If you have some sort of relationship, then you can gauge the temperature of each situation.

But as we’ve all learned from this, if you’re at the top, you’re responsible, for whom you hire and what they do.

  54. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 7:57 am

    #52

    Hey, it’s true.

Some people are very good at what they do.

If I want home-improvement advice, I call Artie Wilson because he knows everybody.

If there’s a crisis situation, I call Michael Green.

It sort of reminds me of how in every celebrity scandal, Gloria Allred is hired. I have no idea if she’s ever argued a case in court in the past decade. But people hire her, cases go away.

But back to UH: This wasn’t a mess until it was turned into one.

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid August 22, 2012 8:01 am

  56. Stephen Tsai August 22, 2012 8:02 am

    One last rant:

Greenwood and Apple are bright and quality leaders. They know the job of education.

I just don’t think that of all of the concerns of UH — research money, capital-improvement projects, professors’ salaries — they never imagined they’d have to deal with stuff like concert scams or conference alignments. That would be like the president of First Hawaiian Bank having to worry about a shortage of money for bathroom supplies.

  57. A-House August 22, 2012 8:05 am

It’s been rumored that JD favored Koetter over Chow as head coach. The question is why? When I mentioned the rumor to hubby, he said, “Who’s Koetter?”

Doesn’t Chow have more name recognition than Koetter and therefore would have more appeal to sports fans?

  60. Annoddah Dave August 22, 2012 8:20 am

I looked at all those photos until my head started spinning! Yet, according to SteveM, so far, I may be the only one that didn’t identify your photo correctly! I can’t reveal the details just yet, but when he hinted that I may have to have my eyes examined, that worried me. I just had some cataracts removed and a lens transplant in both eyes. Maybe I need to get a refund…

What I would like to know is why is Jim Donovan not wanted to be retained? Did he do something wrong? If he did, then why are they offering him another job at $200,000 a year? Or is it that he is just not their man?

  96. al August 22, 2012 9:03 am

    what’s missing?

we have mainland administrators who don’t know the “local style”. it seems that they don’t get it or they just think they can pull the rug over our eyes. jd is as local as one could get. he deserved a better way of being treated. they took his pride away, something that is just not pono.

these administrators remind me of how some “missionaries” came here and did the same to the native people.

    no respect.

Happy belated B-Day to Grumphy, according to Gramps….LOL 🙂

This Donovan mess has a lot to do with personal issues, at least that’s my opinion, between he and MRC Greenwood. Obviously, MRC isn’t even communicating with her Manoa Chancellor very well since they don’t seem to be on the same page…..Aigooooo

  120. A-joe August 22, 2012 9:58 am

Reinstating JD as AD doesn’t make everything pono. The cancer still remains and continues to grow.

I’ve already told JD not to take the deal. It’s blood money. Accepting it means he agrees with all the circus in Manoa. It means it was never about integrity, morals, nor principal. It’s about doing what he’s told, keeping his mouth shut and collecting a phat pay check.

This cancer is bigger than Jim and his challenge. It’s an institution that has gone awry. I told Jim to instead, decline the offer and fight the establishment. Go to the legislature and demand a full investigation. (Where’s Mark Takai- step up to the plate for Jim and the integrity of the UH system, brah!) Take this case to the media. Expose the Malignant Manoa Cancer that festers behind closed doors!

If ever Jim has dreamed of making a difference in life, nows his chance. He’s in a position where he can right the direction of Manoa. Instill confidence and integrity. Jim can be the voice of so many who work at UH that want to speak the truth, but fear retribution.

I’ve told Jim he can’t do this alone. He needs each and every one of our support.

This is beyond football or an AD position or even Manoa Whether we like it or not, The University of Hawaii represents each and every one of us. It stands in the forefront and shows the world our abilities to higher education. UH upholds and associates with the same name we have. It’s actions is a direct reflection of us all.

Do we honestly agree with the seedy business practices being conducted in Manoa? Are you proud to have the University of Hawaii represent you in it’s current state?

    Really?

I ask you all to give your support to Jim and Mark Takai and demand change!!

  121. A-House August 22, 2012 10:00 am

I vote for Greenwood resigning her position immediately!

What has she done for UH since becoming its President beside hogging the tv lite for the MWC announcement? Any initiative to bring more grants and prestiage to UH for astronomy, agriculture, research, tourism and hotel management, etc.?

ST, are you saying that all the others spoke against Jim D? what happened to the other 48 that were supposed to address the BOR? or, did they submit written testimony like tommui?

  126. gigi-hawaii August 22, 2012 10:09 am

    Per Ferd Lewis:

Prior to entering executive session the regents accepted a letter in support of Donovan signed by nine Neighbor Island legislators and in-person public testimony from four people, including members of the UH Letterwinners Club, who asked the board to reinstate Donovan.

  128. Oahu Resident August 22, 2012 10:14 am

The last time a new UH president decided to hire a new AD, we got Herman Frazier to replace Hugh Yoshida. We learned that Yoshida was hard to replace.

His accomplishments included hiring of June Jones, cultivation of relationships with major college ADs that resulted in scheduling of USC and other major universities, a relationship that has continued under Donovan. My opinion, Donovan was Yoshida’s assistant and learned from his mentor, and we will also learn how hard Donovan will be to replace.

  129. gigi-hawaii August 22, 2012 10:18 am

Do you think Freitas will do as well or better than JD?

  130. SteveM August 22, 2012 10:22 am

    Stephen Tsai:

    August 22nd, 2012 at 7:23 am

Hmmm… now I’m beginning to wonder about the timing of Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw’s sabbatical. 😕

  132. Kekoa August 22, 2012 10:28 am

I hear you LOUD and clear A-Joe. It’s time for JD to make a stand. We all like a fair fight, so let’s get behind him and push for a REAL investigation and get ALL the facts. I’m meeting with my favorite State Senator this week, and will see about rallying more support from my good friends in the House as well.

What’s the procedure for dumping a President and a Chancellor? It’s clear that they have botched this whole issue from before the Wonder Blunder. MRC & Apple are a part of the whole problem…yet they were careful not to stand next to JD when he made his announcement to step up. From the beginning I thought they both acted more like

Cowards and left JD hanging. Let’s shine the light of truth on them.

  133. gigi-hawaii August 22, 2012 10:35 am

A-joe and Kekoa: You know darn well that JD will never do that sort of thing. First of all, it’s not part of his personality to fight like that. Second, he has a family to support. Certainly going to try… but it all depends on our schedule at the gallery and/or if we can find someone to take our shift on game day.

I thought Hinshaw was still on the island, although on sabbatical. Oh well… I’m surprised UH was able to justify 400K for Apple as Chancellor on top of Hinshaw’s 295K during her sabbatical. No wonder the professors are all upset, too. It’s not going to make Donovan’s new position a comfortable one with the non-administrative staff on upper campus.

How can you be so sure he won’t fight? I think he would come out to defend his self respect. A man like JD can only take so much before he decides that it’s time to strike back. Further, I believe his wife will not be *kinda shy* about it either! If you get a ‘local’ wahine angry enough to back her husband, you better bring a bento, ’cause you are in for a battle royal. JD doesn’t need a handout, there’s a lot of pride involved.

  161. madeinhawaii August 22, 2012 12:10 pm

Doesn’t Hinshaw start teaching at UH med school this semester?

  162. jm2375 August 22, 2012 12:16 pm

$400K for Chancellor may be at or below market rate, as is Dr. Hinshaw’s salary. My friend is a dean at Univ of So. Florida and is making mid-six figures. When I worked in Public Health years ago, I’d man the UHSPH booth at the annual APHA conference. When we’d put out faculty openings with a starting salary of $37K, we’d get laughs and snickers. UH has been trying to get their salaries up to where we can compete for quality faculty. And, as a general unwritten rule, you don’t work at the same place where you got your degree. It’s difficult to make the jump from student to colleague.

  163. madeinhawaii August 22, 2012 12:20 pm

    jm2375…

I understand it’s somewhere in the middle but the combination of both salaries puts them at the top. Furthermore, UH is in dire straits in terms of financial needs just to improve their infrastructure. It doesn’t have enough monies to provide enough classes for students to get the type of credits they need towards graduation…. hard to justify all that spending on top of JD’s lateral move for $200K+. That’s almost 900K for all three positions… two which are are pretty much benefit the UH very little at this time.

  164. Down with.... August 22, 2012 12:27 pm

I hope the BOR really did a job on her at their meeting today! Hawaii does not need MRC kind of leadership!~

  166. Willie August 22, 2012 12:45 pm

Oahu Resident #128, you left out the very pertinent fact that Hugh Yoshida hired his personal friend Fred Von Whot Happen as the head football coach; I believe that Norm Chow was an applicant for the opening. I guess you could say if not for Whot Happen, June Jones would not have made NCAA history with the positive turnaround in UH football.

What was disturbing about Hugh’s friend was his total abandonment of local recruiting and his public sentiment that you could not be competitive with Hawaii athletes. Not to mention that in one year he changed the offensive scheme 3 times prior to the season opener.

I like what JD did and stood for at UH. He was commited to what was best for the school, giving his heart & soul to the job. I wish him all the best going forward.

  169. NotNasti August 22, 2012 1:04 pm

JD is a big boy and can take care of himself. It’s easy to talk about “principles” and “taking a stand” when you are playing with someone else’s livelihood. We DON’T know what happened behind closed doors, so we should not assume this is something JD doesn’t want. They could have told him we want to bring in our own person to run the AD, but value your commitment and loyalty to the university and therefore will offer you a position in upper campus. If you were him, wouldn’t you prefer that to “thanks for your years of service, can you pack your things by the end of the day?” Is it a soft landing? Yes. Does JD deserve it? From the comments of most people on this blog, I would surmise the answer would be yes as well. Did they botch the handling of the situation? Yes. If they were going to replace him anyway, it would have gone a lot smoother had the Wonder Blunder not happened. I’m the hire/fire/discipline guy for my workplace, and letting someone go is the hardest, most difficult part of my job. I feel rotten everytime I have to do it. If any of you is that person too, you know what I’m talking about.

Per the agenda for the BOR meeting today, just after the call of the meeting to order and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, the public comments were to be heard.

Per Ferd’s article in today’s SA webpage, posted at 10:30 (more or less), Ferd stated that the BOR went into executive session which is restricted only to the BOR people and not open to the general public.

Looking at my tea leafs, this would mean that the general public only had perhaps 15 minutes to say anything before the doors were closed.

Per ST this morning’s TWB, some 50 people were going to be present and testify –

Must have been a bunch of lawyers – they are fast talkers!

I have no problems with the BOR going into Executive Session.

What I was concerned about was, if ST said there were fifty people that were going to testify one way or the other, were they given the time of day?

The Agenda usually is a time table of how the meeting will proceed. Public testimony (or outcry) was suppose to follow the approval of the minutes of the previous meeting

The BOR meeting was scheduled to begin at 9:00AM. The BOR went into executive session at 9:30AM

  177. Kevin August 22, 2012 1:38 pm

50 in person testimonies is impressive.

When I attending the BOR meeting regarding the athletic fee in the summer of 2010, there were about 18 in person testimonies in addition to written ones and that took several hours.

  178. Moocher August 22, 2012 1:46 pm

    JD’s fight is over.

He took the money and future benefits. In fairness, I don’t think many if any of us could walk away from the money or the benefits that are within reach.

Having said that….it’s not his fight anymore-it’s the people’s fight now.

Regarding news PR people, I think perhaps why former news people become PR people is because they should know how to handle and relate to media in order to keep their clients/employers in the best light possible. But the strange thing is that coaches, players, they do not hire PR people and do fairly well speaking to the press as long as they are not talking about leprechauns.

  179. madeinhawaii August 22, 2012 1:48 pm

Someone brought this up in SportsHawaii. They said that games will probably end earlier now that we will be running the pro-set.

Just how much earlier might that be? Does that mean that UH can go back to the 7pm starting time and still finish with early enough for the opposing team to catch their flight?

  180. WWF August 22, 2012 1:50 pm

WOW. . . so much negativity in the air.

I don’t think it will be easy to change the way UH administration works, being a state run institution of higher learning. I don’t think we will change the way politics work, unless we start with the way campaign fund raising works. . . Or how the Board of Regents get selected by politicians. . . thank God football season is almost here . . .

  181. jm2375 August 22, 2012 2:00 pm

mih – Apple’s salary is for Chancellor, Hinshaw’s salary is her med school salary. But yeah, the mysterious new position for JD is puzzling, esp given the slow pace at which new positions are created at UH. As I’ve said before, Hinshaw will be expected to bring in a large portion of her salary in grants plus money for staff, equipment, etc. Not sure what the “indirect” part of a grant is now, but that money goes to UH (or the G-fund), and not to the individual dept/project, etc. May be 25%.

  182. NotNasti August 22, 2012 2:00 pm

#176 Tommui: Those are all legitimate questions you have. Hard to say what happened without actually being there. For example at legislative hearings, the committee chairs often announce at the beginning of the hearing that they have received “x” amount of written testimony, and you are free to testify, but please do so only if you have something additional to say. After an announcement like that, only a few people actually get up and testify in person. It’s easier for us to vent and pontificate on a blog, but much harder to do it in person.

  183. hightide August 22, 2012 2:23 pm

How are the rest of Manoas academic departments holding up under Greenwoods leadership. ARE they

You and NotNasti are prolly right. No sense beating a dead horse. JD was forced into a soft corner (whoa, I almost said coroner). Maybe we should just oust MRC.

MRC has done nothing but be one ackta since she arrived. Look at all the goofy chet she’s done…from her living quarters to her duties as the Prez. Now this Looney Tunes episode where she concentrates on destroying JD. Meanwhile her pahtna – Apple has been pretty quiet since he showed his okole at the last presser.

I can’t wait for the boo birds to come out at any event they are announced at from now on.

Lot of people forget that Virginia Hinshaw had joint appointments at UC Davis as a professor of virology in the UC Davis School of Medicine and in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Her research on the influenza virus has increased the understanding of important hosts of the influenza virus in nature, transmission among humans, lower mammals and birds, genetic changes related to disease severity, the molecular basis of cell-killing, and new approaches to vaccines.

She also held research appointments at the Medical College of Virginia, the University of California, Berkeley, St. Jude Children‘s Research Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

So her present salary should not be considered unusual for a top researcher.

I liked Dr. Hinshaw as she was one (if not the only one) of the people from Upper Campus to cheer on the UH athletes in all sports, silly hat and all!

  192. Kevin August 22, 2012 3:09 pm

Dr. Hinshaw was always approachable and she really seemed to enjoy all the athletic events.

Only one person and one organization SPOKE this morning during the Public Comment Period. Two letters – one signed by Tom Mui and the other by nine Neighbor Island House members – were submitted.

I had to leave at 12:30 pm for a downtown meeting at 1:15 pm so I am dependent upon Dave Reardon and Ferd Lewis along with the tv people to let me know what, if anything, the Board of Regents decided to do next.

However, with respect to what will be happening to the University of Hawai`i leadership, the next step must be to bring the Governor and the Lt. Governor to the table. Yes, the UH System is semi-authonomous, but it is still part of state government.

Meanwhile, those of you who have contacts in the downtown business community and Na Koa, express your concerns about these events.

In fact, at the last Force home game, there were 32 UH fans in the stands! We were even introduced before the game, and interviewed during the game!

    Tom:

In addition to signing up to speak up prior to the meeting’s start, (I think it was) Keith Amemiya offered the several dozen people in the audience an opportunity to speak after the four signees finished. Two of them were graduate students addressing their concerns about budget issues.

The Executive Session shift on the agenda did not in any way cut back the attendees’ opportunity to speak.

NOTE: Whether the public would have an opportunity to formally address whatever the Board decided in the Executive Session was not placed on the agenda; however. Greenwood said in her letter that she would be willing to speak to “the public.”

For those of you attending the Pigskin Pigout tomorrow night – I cannot afford it – please talk to The Big Cheeses there about taking the lead in bringing the University of Hawai`i back into our backyard.

This is the smallest town in the whole wide world – and clearly the UH administrators don’t get it.

Oh the games people play now

Every night and every day now

Never meaning what they say now

    Never saying what they mean

And they wile away the hours

    In their ivory towers

Till they’re covered up with flowers

In the back of a black limousine

    Chorus

La-da da da da da da da

La-da da da da da de

    Talking ’bout you and me

    And the games people play

Oh we make one another cry

Break a heart then we say goodbye

Cross our hearts and we hope to die

That the other was to blame

    Neither one will give in

So we gaze at our eight by ten

Thinking ’bout the things that might have been

    It’s a dirty rotten shame

    Repeat Chorus

    People walking up to you

    Singing glory hallelulia

And they’re tryin to sock it to you

In the name of the Lord

They’re gonna teach you how to meditate

Read your horoscope, cheat your faith

And further more to hell with hate

Come on and get on board

    Repeat Chorus

Look around tell me what you see

What’s happening to you and me

    God grant me the serenity

    To remember who I am

Cause you’ve given up your sanity

For your pride and your vanity

    Turns you sad on humanity

And you don’t give a da da da da da

    Repeat Chorus

    autonomy sucks!!!!

no control over the UH-M leadership. they can spend money like nutzos. they can spend money we no more.

I agree with A-Joe. we need someone in upper campus that appreciates UH athletics. not athletics, UH Athletics! the UH Athletes represent us. Hawaii. I don’t some ex UC ex to speak for me. I need a local. Coach Chow is local. Rockne is local. But speak for us.

I agree with the image: MRC hogged the tv on the MRC deal. for herself.

and I agree with the image that Virginia was hung out. JD was hung out.

don’t get me wrong. i am happy that JD got some cushion for his family. good for him. I know he’ll go the extra to make himself feel that he is earning the money. He’s that kind of guy. and i’m also saying that if MRC is saying JD is just too soft and he didn’t cover all his bases in UH Athletics, then say it. don’t pussy foot around. we’re UH supporters. All for all.

Yup, I’m for A-Joe’s idea. And AHouse idea. We need local muscle for the head job. and, this blaming Sheriff for the majority of the deal, when he’s got legal oversight from upper campus…. where was they? ???????????????????????

oh yeh, blame da down below gang. dey not going stand up for themselves.

Duh da, duh da da da da da da da ……

MRC is saying to her upper administration and PR focus group:

boy he sure was a cheap date. and the former politicians who call themselves the Bored of Rejects, i knew we could outlast them. they live on their stomachs. good job team. this will all blow over. nobody asked the real difficult question: how come the legal team never called attention to the fake escrow account? how would Sheriff know the account was fake? again like i said, good thing we outlasted the questions. spend alot of time wearing down the naggers.

well done team. we saved the day for the University of Hawaii. 😀

    Re #249, d1….haha….uh oh. 🙂

  266. Moocher August 22, 2012 7:06 pm

so…..Hinshaw wanted to extend JD as AD a year or so ago..greenwood said no, regents said no.

    catfight???

Hinshaw takes a paid “sabbatical” per http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/18397941/uhs-hinshaw-getting-287k-sabbatical-high-paid-professorship

Hinshaw removed, JD as AD is next. But first Coach Mac is “retired” and paid as well.

On to JD. Simply put “Ousted”.

Learning from their mistakes and operating in their same MO, remove JD, pay him, but keep him in another position because in the public’s eye we cannot give out more money without the people having a post.

Working backwards, with the realignment of college football at the time, Hinshaw as football’s and JD’s greatest supporter, I see this a 100% move because of football. Coach Mac’s losing season made it easier to change things…and the concert fiasco only speeded it up. greenwood is the head…but just who might have the greatest influence and perhaps pulled the puppet strings of greenwood? And who is mum always in the shadows? And who is football’s “other” greatest supporter? rockne….

More and more, it looks like rockne is behind all of this. i’m getting the feeling rockne has his own personal agenda and pitting people against each other to achieve it.

rockne thinking to himself….”College football is changing way to fast, I need to step in and speed things up before we are left out, these guys are naive. First get rid of Hinshaw, JD’s biggest supporter, Coach Mac had a losing season but the year before he won the conference? Nevermind, get rid of coach too. Now I can bring in Chow-he knows the conference we are going to better then anyone else and local people won’t question a local hire too much, besides, he’s more then credible. Then get rid of JD. JD was taking too long to get a conference and seats were filling fast. We’ll pay all of them to keep quiet and sugarcoat the real reasons they left like sabbatical, retirement, transferred positions-lateral move.”

Was that how it went? Maybe it’s not really greenwood?

Of course rockne will not say he wants to be AD…it would be too easy to connect the dots if he did.

    IMHO…..

  267. Moocher August 22, 2012 7:10 pm

    And also…

rockne thinking to himself….”Anyway I liked JD, I just needed to step in and speed things up but let’s put him somewhere.”

    IMHO

  268. d1shima August 22, 2012 7:13 pm

Sounds like they wanted to do the same thing they did to Coach Mack to JD….Have him stand before the media and claim something that isn’t real or right but go along with it….I’m guessing the only reason JD was given this new post is because it all never got swept under the rug quickly enough.

  288. Capitolist/WassupDoc August 22, 2012 10:47 pm

Is there any interest on this blog to address the issue of getting new academic administrative leadership for the University of Hawai`i System?

  289. Moocher August 22, 2012 11:52 pm

After reading the conditions JD’s lawyer set which can be found at http://www.khon2.com/media/lib/128/b/7/7/b7729c1b-72e3-4736-8174-6b477f9e6feb/DOC082212.pdf

After reading the above link, is it right to conclude that JD was kept perhaps as a way to “restore his reputation” and for greenwood and gang (which I will now call gang-green) to not be liable for any type of defamation lawsuit?

If you haven’t already, read the above link…. it’s quite interesting.

    Ahaaaaaaaaaaa

Moocher is quite the detective. #290. and he went plenny far from 270.

first he dunno, just trying to add entertainment value, and then he did a

wifi burg, and found da smoking letta. 😆 quite a literary feat frum/fo JD.

And the 5 page letter points out the real problem in the Wondergate fiasco. Not Rich Sheriff. The problem was UH Legal Counsel. Thats the conclusion Simon alleges,

    and I agree.

But the problem with UH Legal Counsel is Legal Counsel knows too much about too many things, and outing da legalz will cause real problems for the whole PR gang, starting from da top.

    cavewarrior

he said it best, simply cannot pay enough for this kind of entertainment. 😀

but da best of da best is a Moocha 267.

your analytical prowess is beyond compare.

your intuition is ala da honey badger. Rockne. and he works in tandem

    wit a scapegoat. Greenwood.

heck, lets face it. Rockne is a pro. Like Elizabeth II. all behind da scenes.

he’s like quite deft and slickahand. He got Chow. He putting da pieces in da puzzle, and showing da oddaz how fo fit a square in da round hole.

and if dats wats going on, and dis is only conjecture but i noticing how everybody else going get da rap an not him, den i saying da Kam Skoo grads are pretty pretty tricky. 😆

but he gotta work on da money sava. an he gotta get frum behind da skirt. she cannot hide him foreva. 😀

an anyway, he gonna outtink hisself. and dat is not always a good sign fo da Kam Skoo gang. cuz pretty soon da Punahou guys gonna leave him in da dust. right?

    😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

    Moo cha,

    290.

    how you found da letter?

    your timing is poifek.

Reardon and Ferd would love da stuff.

the letter musta been given to the BOR, no?

the Simon letter is quite damning to Ms. Greenwood’s

rendition of the facts in yesterday’s presser, that the

problem was with Mr. Sheriff, per her presser.

Maybe Simon gets a new client after yesterday’s presser?

i saw all this in a movie once. I not sure of the title,

    “they shoot horses, don’t they?”

all i know is this: Coach Chow and his crew gonna do way way way betta

    than his UH bosses.

Coach Chow doing it right. He playing to his public bosses, not da nutitionists in upper campus.

    Go Warriors.

  295. BigHiloFan2 August 23, 2012 1:49 am

    ok. Gang Green wins. 😆

so, while we been watching da Wed fights, wats Coach been up to? I know he’s got Rockne’s respect. Mine too. Whats he up to?

got da blog host out back, talking to hisself, not talking to Sean? and not talking to Alex D?

not giving him hand me downs. talking about da Warriors who’re not going to LA?

Well, its Thursday. Team leaves for LA inna week. gotta book rezz. gotta name names.

i’m lookin fo signs dat Coach is sneeky peet. and its all ova da places. Speshooz? wat Speshooz? kicka? no mention kicka, no need kicka. 😀

yep, imma concluding da obvious.

ST is in on da plot.

    loose lips sink ships. 😀

    we’re on da outs. 😀

    booo hoooo hoooo…. 😀

    Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

especially after Simon’s letter has now come out.

ok. brake time. back inna few.

but getting back to da Moo Cha.

dat was good. superb. real gooderer. because the facts in the letter is wat

    was entertaining. had extra value.

cuz now all da speculation makes sense. we get teets. meaning, da speculation got homogenized. da rumors gonna be long lasting.

might as well call him President. i cannot believe Gang Green and Green Apple are dis stoopid to do all dis to demselves. gotta have had help. 😆

page 3 of 5 “[JD’s] his instructions to the athletic department before he left was that the contract was not to be signed until it had been cleared and approved by UH’s general counsel’s office….” another head shot.

  324. papajoe2 August 23, 2012 7:11 am

Didn’t Greenwood just say on the news last night that it was a mistake made by the athletic department? Sounds to me like JD, the leader of the athletic department, was still getting blamed but indirectly. Still trying to make an excuse why he shouldn’t retain his AD job.

  325. Kekoa August 23, 2012 7:30 am
