Schroeder, Hall earn scholarships

Quarterback Sean Schroeder and tight end Ryan Hall have been placed on scholarship, head coach Norm Chow confirmed.

Schroeder and Hall are both Duke graduates who transferred to UH this summer.

Schroeder is the Warriors’ No. 1 quarterback. Hall is the top F, which is a hybrid tight end and H-back.

The Warriors had a walk-through at Aloha Stadium, an excursion that included the Warrior Walk (from the parking lot to the box office). They also worked on the haka, introductions and substitutions.

Congratz to Sean and Ryan. Now, get us some touchdowns! 😉

  8. Stiguy808 August 18, 2012 2:35 am

Just curious…were the former UH football head coaches this detail oriented? IMHO I think these little things speak volumes for the kind of program Coach Chow wants to run.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid August 18, 2012 3:01 am

I agree, Stiguy.’ Chow is very meticulous, and you can see that everything he does is for good cause. I can’t wait for the season to start.

  15. protector August 18, 2012 4:11 am

Morning everyone!. Congrats to Sean & Ryan; two decisive and assertive young men. I’m hoping they’ll be equally adept in the upcoming challenge. Birthday wishes to LM.

  16. Bugaz August 18, 2012 4:11 am

Was just thinking about the walk while checking out the photos, thanks by the way, and would probably be killaz if was led by Kahuna blessing the path, with nice green kahili bearers escorting the warriors in a more organize two person side by side stroll. Just a thought. Aloha

  17. mo808 August 18, 2012 4:13 am

    Nice one Bugaz! Good idea!

  18. Bugaz August 18, 2012 4:15 am

Went from organized military photos to a cluster of guys so I could help.

    Thanks Mo

  20. Bugaz August 18, 2012 4:18 am

Threaten the team of doing the walk in malo, and watch all of them work out extremely hard during the off season. Lol

  21. mo808 August 18, 2012 4:19 am

Nice photos and write up in SA today ST!

“We’re training for everything, from the way we get dressed to the way we play,” linebacker George Daily-Lyles said.

“It’s going to be nice when the season hits and we have no surprises and we know how to react to everything.”

I like the details…preparedness means no surprises!

  22. Bugaz August 18, 2012 4:20 am

…and hanging out at the beach getting rid of the shorts tan. Go Waimea Bay and see the whole Oline in G-…never mind

  23. mo808 August 18, 2012 4:23 am

I really like the fact that the Warriors will past through the tailgate crowd– that should jack everybody up seeing the guys up close and personal! Not to mention what it will do to rev up the Warriors!

  24. mo808 August 18, 2012 4:25 am

    Exciting times!

London has several teams in the EPL. They are:. . Arsenal (North London). Tottenham Hotspur (also North London). Chelsea (West London). Fulham (down the road from Chelsea). West Ham (East London, despite their name). Charlton (South London). Watford (I suppose they count. They’re just outside of London)

  30. zobacz August 18, 2012 5:06 am

  35. d1shima August 18, 2012 5:47 am

Will the parking lot open early enough for fans to gather?

Hopefully, the Warrior Walk will develop into something similar to what is in place for the NC’s.

  36. gigi-hawaii August 18, 2012 5:47 am

WNY: Didn’t people say UH would be WAC champ last year? We ended up with a losing season. So, I wouldn’t put much stock in polls.

  37. lava August 18, 2012 5:49 am

I keep hearing how we are going to shock the world at USC, but I’ll bet those same people want 35 points when it’s time to place a wager.

  38. WarriorNY August 18, 2012 6:00 am

    Gigi,

Agreed… Remember in 2010, UH was supposed to be the bottom team in the conference… They ended up as WAC champs…

    Lava,

What’s your point? Vegas gives UH 38 points… Why the hell wouldn’t we take it??

  39. Big Hilo Fan2 August 18, 2012 6:02 am

    Howzit Tsaikos.

Good job Cap/WDoc. Thx much for the info.

  40. Big Hilo Fan2 August 18, 2012 6:05 am

  41. WarriorNY August 18, 2012 6:07 am

    Just. FYI,

Jets/Giants game tonight… Due to the jets receiver situation, I wouldnt be surprised if Royce Pollard gets significant playing time… Be sure to check it out…

  45. Kevin August 18, 2012 7:38 am

That is a very good spot to park the bus and walk. That aisle – way in the parking lot is where the “rowdy” UH fans t-gate and a lot of the students are in that area as well!

  46. chopsueyboy August 18, 2012 7:38 am

I think it was a WAC rule that the football team should be on the same sidelines as the student body.

Didn’t matter for regular schedule, but games moved up for tv purposes placed us in the sun.

Does the MTW conference have a similar rule?

During non-conference games, we had the option for the team to be in the shade on the makai sidelines.

    walter:

    August 17th, 2012 at 8:31 am

    well-done walk-ons!

#42, I’ve wondered why in the past, the team would be in the sun, while the visitors would end up in the shade

  47. Kevin August 18, 2012 7:39 am

    duffer,

NOTHING interesting about some sick bastards putting words in the mouths of student-athletes. And look who is joining in the fun with all that crap.

Some people cannot hide the fact they have issues stalking young female student-athletes and nitpicking every little thing they can find online.

Dunno what is more pathetic, the fact that there are “men” doing this or the fact that the particular blog host over there doesnt take action in her own hands to block these fools.

  48. tommui August 18, 2012 7:57 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Hate to see pictures of food before I had breakfast!

  50. Inyoface August 18, 2012 8:03 am

Cischemic Chow only knows about BIG TIME football. Most anticipated season I can remember since 2007.

  51. Inyoface August 18, 2012 8:05 am

Coach Chow I mean. Damn spell check

  52. PolyMom August 18, 2012 8:05 am

So excited for the Warrior Walk. Just like the big time schools like USC, Texas ect.

Thanks for the healing thoughts for Calen. He’s a quick heal. And would not leave camp. Always a team player.

  53. gigi-hawaii August 18, 2012 8:06 am

WNY: Hubby told me we don’t get the NFL network channel on cable, so we won’t be able to watch the Jets/Giants game tonight. We really wanted to see Royce Pollard in action.

  54. kev-1 August 18, 2012 8:08 am

Yup! It’s official. Coach Chow and the new look Warriors will get their first test against the best team in the nation.

Maybe a better way to put it would be . . . UH gets first crack at #1

  55. gigi-hawaii August 18, 2012 8:11 am

kev-1: Yup, that’s the best way of putting it!

  56. kev-1 August 18, 2012 8:13 am

That QB from Mililani has a great arm. Looks kind of small though. I read someone on here the other day talking about him, so checked him out for myself. Very impressed!

  59. A-joe August 18, 2012 8:26 am

    ST-

All too often Hawaii gets done in over the simplest mental lapses. Untimely fumbles. Incomplete passes. Costly penalties. Terrible tackling…

Have you seen Coach Chow and his staff emphasize the very basic fundamentals?

-Proper and effective tackling techniques: open field, one on one, gang/swarm…

    -Ball Hawking (fumble-idous induction)

    -Ball security/pass completion (fumble-idous/incompletion prevention)

    -Blocking techniques for various situations

    -special teams play

-solid fundamental knowledge to the rules of the game

    -sound knowledge of game strategy

    Thanks ST.

  60. chawan_cut August 18, 2012 8:27 am

that’s actually really smart. that middle walkway down the parking lot is where all the crazy fans are tailgating and blasting their music. i’d get all pumped up for that watching the warriors head to the stadium from the middle bridge.

  61. Hank August 18, 2012 8:33 am

@A-Joe…maybe we will now know how to properly cover on-side kicks?

  62. Bryson August 18, 2012 8:33 am

Iit would be cool if they could somehow make the walkway green…then we could name it the Warrior Mile…I’m excited though I mentioned it last season that we needed a way to connect the team and the fans this is a perfect way to start doing it!

  63. Hank August 18, 2012 8:34 am

Watched Cory Paredes on the NFL network with the Vikings and I thought he did well. Vikings crushed the Bills.

  64. Da Punchbowl Kid August 18, 2012 8:34 am

U roght about dat, chawan! That’s going to be a lot of fun and will help get the fans and players jacked up! Coach Chow is some akamai!

  65. Da Punchbowl Kid August 18, 2012 8:35 am

    right even… 😳

  66. Da Punchbowl Kid August 18, 2012 8:36 am

Mebbe dey could make the visiting teams walk that same route. 👿

  67. gigi-hawaii August 18, 2012 8:37 am

Glad to see Damien High School has won their first 2 games this fall. They didn’t win any games last year, so this is a turn around. Hope they keep it up.

My mom was the registrar at Damien from when it first opened in 1962 til 1978 when she retired. She is 96 now.

  68. Supastoke August 18, 2012 8:38 am

Pay attention to DETAILS! Love it.

  69. cincodemayonnaisse August 18, 2012 8:53 am

To 2nd Bugaz thought process….don’t necessarily have to have a “kahuna” blessing the team coming in but you could easily get a student from our Hawaiian program to chant the team in…..

There are many chants that would be appropriate for this type of occasion…not just the often used “E Ku Mau Mau”

It would be original to our school and made to be respectful of the culture, it would be sincere and be careful not to be for Hollywood purposes. In other words, not just for show. Perfect fit…

I cannot say enough how much I appreciate NC’s thoroughness. I hope it can equate into a successful program, pretty confident it will.

  70. jm2375 August 18, 2012 9:04 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to the Mr. Schroeder and Mr. Hall.

(ST – is Schroeder pronounced like the Peanuts character or like the former Redskins QB “Shray-der”?)

Can we get the percussion section to line the Warrior Walk? 8)

  71. PolyMom August 18, 2012 9:10 am

If you have Fox Sports Networks the Hawaii v Washington game is on right now. Check out the game.

  72. madeinhawaii August 18, 2012 9:11 am

Maybe fans and line up along the walk and use the noise makers that they are no longer allowed to bring into the stadium…

  73. madeinhawaii August 18, 2012 9:11 am

conch shells would be nice, too.

  74. wyroby z betonu August 18, 2012 9:15 am

  77. Claud Sutcliffe August 18, 2012 10:27 am

There’s an interesting article in the New York Times’ sports section today, on “Calculating the Risks of Not Punting on 4th Down.”

    Go Warriors! Beat USC!

  78. Haleakala August 18, 2012 10:31 am

Our skilled Warriors did well in their games yesterday.

Alex Green (GB) Runs 4 for 16 Long 5

Davone Bess (Miami) Receiving 2 for 12 Long 12

Kealoha Pilares (Carolina) Kick Returns 2 for 31 Long 21

Hopefully Greg Salas and Royce Pollard can shine in their games today.

  79. Haleakala August 18, 2012 10:33 am

Also Kealoha Pilares had one reception for 32 yards!

  80. janek August 18, 2012 10:41 am

I have been exploring for a little bit for any high quality articles or blog posts in this sort of house . Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this site. Reading this information So i’m happy to express that I have a very just right uncanny feeling I came upon exactly what I needed. I most certainly will make sure to do not disregard this web site and give it a glance regularly.

  83. koakane August 18, 2012 10:43 am

mid morning warrior nation and 808 country

nice touch with the warrior or chow line, like to see the fans line the walk only cause the band does the 5-0 or whatever will be played when the team rushes into the battle field. jmho makes bonding between players, coaches and fans more personable.

  84. Ben A Lurker August 18, 2012 10:43 am

    rush = catch

liking the suggestions made my the peeps about using UH students in various college discipline to support athletics ie hawaiian studies for the chant as one example, get dem students back into the picture. dey belong

    nuff said

  86. oldtimer808 August 18, 2012 10:47 am

Good morning…there are always great suggestions in this blog. In respect to using a chanter that would be a great idea so long as it is pono. I think the chant should be at the beginning before the walk begins and the chanter should come from the Hawaiian Studies program and a current student as recommended by a kumu. No chatting should be done during the walk in respect to the chant since the fans will be growing crazy during the walk. Upper campus (admin) should allow the students to rally for the team and keep their nose out of the process to get student participation for all home games.

  87. Kapahulu August 18, 2012 11:01 am

From the Front Page a few minutes ago:

Hawaii will open season against USC team ranked #1 in AP poll

  88. work at home moms August 18, 2012 11:33 am

Hello there, You’ve done an excellent job. I’ll definitely digg it and individually suggest to my friends. I’m confident they’ll be benefited from this site.

  89. lava August 18, 2012 11:36 am

My point regarding the “shock the world upset of USC” is that I don’t think anyone really believes it. Forget Vegas and the odds and points. If you had to bet your car that USC loses at home to UH, you wouldn’t make the bet (and UH is 0-1). An even up bet is more credible. Using that benchmark, are you willing to bet your car UH goes 8-4? 6-6? 4-8?

If Vegas gives UH 40 points against USC, sure we take the points, but when we lose by 39, we aren’t shocking anyone by merely covering.

  90. laulau head August 18, 2012 11:37 am

Nice pics! I agree…perfect planning for the walk!

  91. el burro sabio August 18, 2012 11:41 am

  94. Old School Dave August 18, 2012 11:49 am

The USC game should be a good challenge and gauge of how good UH is against the best. Nothing to lose – “no scared em, go get em.” But the game I’ve circled on my calendar is the one against BYU in Provo. That would be poetic justice for Norm Chow to walk out of a silenced Cougar Stadium victorious.

  95. SAWARRIOR August 18, 2012 11:56 am

congratz to hall and oates…. i mean hall and shroeder. and that food looks ONO!!!!

  96. SteveM August 18, 2012 12:01 pm

    Good afternoon everyone!

Two grad student scholarships– congrats to Schroeder and Hall!

Professor Chow’s first team offense using grad students sounds impressive. 😉

  97. Wes'side Warrior August 18, 2012 12:02 pm

MIH… your post at 9:11 am… Conch shells being blown by as many folks as possible lining that walk would be chicken skin! And imagine a chanter right off the bus, and maybe one more at the end of the walk, just chanting blessings as the boyz walk by? As unique and local, and yet down-to-earth meaningful as can be!

  98. Stephen Tsai August 18, 2012 12:12 pm

When people go to Vegas, they always joke about how they’ll spend their MegaBucks winnings.

    Will they win MegaBucks?

    Odds are against it.

But why put a damper on the festive fun of hope?

It takes an angry self-hateful person to want to put the damper on people just having fun.

    Lighten up.

We’re all going to have fun and great lives with great friends and family whether somebody wants to tsk-tsk the party.

Lava… re: Your post at 11:36 am (#89 above until the spam zapper is brought out)…

We were still living in Michigan, one fateful day in September of 2007.

Big Blue was favored by something like 4TD’s in the Big House. They were ranked in the top-5 at the time, and most folks we knew were upset that they should have been higher. Everyone we knew went to the game.

I was actually smiling when Appy State went up 28-14, doubling Michigan just before halftime. It was just one of those feelings that we also had for Hawaii, hoping for a magical season. We were so looking forward to the underdogs proving themselves. That feeling of hope will never be forgotten.

We squeezed throughout the second half, as Michigan made their comeback… all the way to that blocked FG attempt and run back at the end.

So if some folks want to believe get chance, why kill the fun, hope, and dream? If you don’t believe get chance, then that’s up to you. We all know that anything can happen. We’ve got a smart coach (and staff), and a bunch of guys who are physical and believe. Just enjoy the build-up, even if you don’t drink kool-aid!

  101. Derek August 18, 2012 12:52 pm

If there is one game that I’d like to see Hawaii win is at home against Boise St. Heck, that game just might be the Mountain West Conference title. That would be so sweet, indeed.

But yeah, every win is a good win. Let’s not talk about potential losses. Let’s get rid of all these negative ways. Woof, Woof!

USC is the ultimate test in the first game. Nobody is expecting Hawaii to be close in this game, except the coaches and the players. There is no pressure for Hawaii, just play the game that the coaches have been teaching. Let it all hang out and keep the mistakes down to a minimum. Run the ball, control the clock, short passing, pick up lots of first downs, and make some big plays on offense and defense, and take advantage of scoring opportunties. Who knows what happens when the ball doesn’t bounce straight.

  102. Garret August 18, 2012 1:11 pm

Vegas would be really shocked if UH upset USC–the spread has gone up to 39 points now it seems (d1shima, time to change that daily post of yours) and the money line is just crazy. The money line started out at +19500 and is now at +22750. That means that $100 bet on UH to win (no point spread) would turn into $22,750 if UH won…

Talk about a lack of respect–the Vegas odds gives SUNY-Buffalo a much better chance of beating Georgia than they give UH beating USC. SUNY-Buffalo!

  103. Garret August 18, 2012 1:15 pm

The Warrior Walk is a GREAT idea, something that is great for the players and the fans. Adding to the atmosphere of home games is important to aid the home field advantage, which will lead to more wins and better attendance.

I’ve witnessed similar pre-game walks for other college football teams and it really is something special. I’m glad that the Warriors will have that atmosphere…an example of the program under Coach Chow doing things that the big-time programs have always done. This costs UH no money to do and will actually end up encouraging more people to attend games, so this is a great idea that Coach Chow has earned the praise he’s getting for.

  107. Shoko August 18, 2012 1:45 pm

Anyway, figure if the Warriors were to become bowl eligible, the AF game would be a crucial game. After that, the last two games are with UNLV and South Alabama which should be sure wins.

Would be nice if the Hawaii Bowl was played between Hawaii and SMU. That bowl game would definitely fill the stadium. A man can dream, right?

I wonder that with these changes that Coach Chow is implementing–as with the Warrior Walk through the fans tailgating (that is an exciting walk even for us fans to walk through)–if it might not mean more season ticket sales. I keep hearing sales still down from last year.

I discovered your “The Warrior Beat | Schroeder, Hall earn scholarships | UH football, University of Hawaii athletics | staradvertiser.com | Honolulu, Hawaii” page via Google but it was hard to find as you were not on the first page of search results. I see you could have more visitors because there are not many comments on your website yet. I have found a website which offers to dramatically increase your rankings and traffic to your site: http://aerotraffic.com/web-traffic/. I managed to get close to 1000 visitors/day using their services, you could also get lot more targeted traffic than you have now. I used their services and got significantly more visitors to my site. Hope this helps 🙂 Take care.

Once again, here’s my annual rant about keiki pricing. Why are the keiki seats limited to the upper levels? I’m willing to pay a few bucks more for keiki seats down in the lower levels but not full adult price. You might get more families and get the kids engaged earlier (and become lifelong fans) if they were closer to the action.

    *stepping down off the soapbox*

I think we will keep the game close if we don’t allow too many mistakes. USC is formidable but I think we can impress a lot of people. Living in the heart of OC, everyone here is pumped up for the Trojans but being a UH alumni and keeping my mouth shut, I hear everyone respects Coach Chow so they do not not take to the odds as much over here. Enjoy the game, I will.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but if it’s all the same, I don’t want these negative nancys anywhere around me come game day…

Those are the ones that seem almost happy that their predictions come true….real Nostradamus types I tell you…doesn’t take a rocket scientist to pick the favorite.

I don’t get it, if you’re a fan, no matter the team or challenge, you pick your team to win. I guess that’s one of the problems with some fans. If we beat a weak team their not impressed, play a top team and they jump ship like it’s on fire. Finicky bunch…

Sorry for the rant but it does get irritating for those who wish to remain positive in support….that’s why we play the games. You never know……

GUESS THE YOUNG TSAI-KO CHALLENGE NEWS

mo808 has won the fill-in-the-blank phase of the Challenge with a correct guess score of around 50%. The 2nd and 3rd place guessers were within 2 and 3 points (the guessers not named here to shield their anonymity for phase 2.

Her prize is a blue “Bonafide Tsai-ko” mug from the limited 2008 production. Click here to see photo. Note that the beverage glass on the right will be the prize for the Phase 2 “multiple choice”.

Winner for most incorrectly guessed (hardest) photo was inconclusive due to the low guess rate. In other words, had plenty… 😐 Hopefully Phase 2 will determine this. Since this person has to be seen more, the prize for this category is a free lunch or dinner at a Cattle or Karaoke Call.

Phase 2 multiple choice starts Sunday night

    Rules:

    1) Current participants may substitute their pix or submit a 2nd one. Limit 2.

    2) Only 1 list of guesses per person (reduces recordkeeping)

    3) Guesses due by midnight, Friday August 24

    4) NEW PARTICIPANTS may submit one photo (high school–mid 20’s) for entry into the contest. Due by Sunday night.

Think you know the Tsai-kos and can top 55%?

    Join the challenge and fun!

Cost of entry is one digital photo….and some coolness. 😎
