Lion eyes; Edwards makes the cut

The Warriors have entered the pursuit of Penn State players, who are essentially free agents after the NCAA’s sanctions against the Nittany Lions.

The Warriors have made inquiries about running back Curtis Dukes, who is considered to be a long shot. But head coach Norm Chow said the priority is to add a punter and offensive linemen.

Chow said he has authorized assistant coach Chris “Demo” Demarest to be the point man in dealing with Penn State. It was an appointment that was both geographical and logical. Demarest was on a professional-improvement trip on the East Coast when the Penn State sanctions were announced. He also has been an effective recruiter.

“We’re going to do what we need to do to get better,” Chow said.

The competition for Penn State players will be heavy.

But Chow said:  “We’re going to take our swings.”

  18. haka July 24, 2012 6:24 am

Seeing Boise, Nevada and Fresno predicted at the top of the poll is very comforting as ai-no-sked-em. Been there, can do that…especially with Boise & Nevada at home. Both know how tough it is for them playing here. Rock da hale! Having had recent success at Fresno, plus the fact that Coach Chow has much experience in playing at the rest of the Mountain West venues makes for a positive familiarity. Having a new system on both sides of the ball can be counterbalanced with leadership, chemistry and BELIEF!

    I BELIEVE!

    GO WARRIORS!

    I BELIEVE!

    GO WARRIORS!

    I BELIEVE!

    GO WARRIORS!

  21. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 6:40 am

Happy Belated Anniversary Warrior Beat! Oh, try wait. I thought today was yesterday. Well Happy Birthday Warrior Beat!

    Happy Anniversary ST and Wena!

  22. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 6:40 am

    Or maybe today is tomorrow.

  23. Keoniana July 24, 2012 6:43 am

Fresno was picked ahead because they have a very good QB in Derek Carr 144 QB Rating and RB Robbie Rouse is a 2 time 1000 yard rusher. Our road game @ Fresno will be tough, but history shows, we like to win at Fresno as Under dogs.

  24. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 6:44 am

Look at the top 3 in the MWC poll. I thought the WAC was the weaker conference? Top 3 and 4 of top the seven. When UH were in the WAC, ever since the split, I always thought the WAC were the better conference in football.

  25. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 6:48 am

Frenso, like UH, has a new coach and a new system. I’m pretty sure that they are moving to the 4 wide receiver offense. We went to the 4 wide receiver offense, to beat us, you had to outscore us. Not too many teams stopped UH’s offense, including USC.

  26. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 6:49 am

Warrior Beat is 6 today. I remember when I was 6. It was right after my 10th birthday.

  27. HawaiiMongoose July 24, 2012 6:59 am

I’ll go out on a limb right now and predict that Boise State will not win the conference title.

  28. Shoko July 24, 2012 7:04 am

This preseason poll reminds me of the Warriors’ 2010 season when they were picked to finish in the middle of the pack. That year, the Warriors managed to beat Fresno State in their house and Nevada who finished with a 12-1 regular season record. The end result for the Warriors was a share of the WAC championship.

Besides, this is just what the media thinks. I think this season will be filled with close hard-fought games and no blowouts. Unless, of course, you’re called the Rebels or the Lobos.

    Ready for some football!!

  29. whitey July 24, 2012 7:07 am

Congratulations and Happy Anniversay to the Warrior Beat

  30. tommui July 24, 2012 7:07 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And Happy Anniversary Wena and Stephen!

And a hip hip hooray to the Warrior Beat!

  31. chawan_cut July 24, 2012 7:10 am

    bhf2,

i been busy, found time last night to whip up that wallpaper. clock, 12 opponents, chow time, i figured it’d be a good match.

  32. Bigislandkurt July 24, 2012 7:14 am

We certainly have every chance in the world to knock some of those guys like Nevada, Fresno and Wyo off of their perch. I’m cool with the #7 rating. To me, #’s 2-7 could shape up in many different configurations.

Go Warriors. Way to represent the 808 Pai and Mike.

    BIK

  33. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 7:44 am

JMO, Penn State’s penalties are so severe, I wonder why they are even having a football team this season. With no post season and $60M taken away, how are they going to keep keepin on? They won’t even get money for their conference team’s success.

  34. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 7:49 am

It’s only a preseason poll. Look at last season, the Warriors were picked to finish #1 in both the coaches and media polls.

  35. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 7:49 am

    Happy anniversary blog!

  36. Shoko July 24, 2012 7:50 am

Don’t play Wyoming this year, but I like your attitude. 😉

  37. Ipu Man July 24, 2012 7:55 am

Happy anniversary to us. The Warrior Beat is 6 today…

We all are just young whipper snappers.

  38. Shoko July 24, 2012 7:55 am

No football team means no games and no fan’s in the bleachers. No sense punish the Nittany faithful, too. Still interested in catching some Penn games this season, regardless of the bad publicity they’ve been getting.

  39. Ipu Man July 24, 2012 7:56 am

If Rolo gets to design and call plays, watch out—

    maybe national ranking.

  40. haka July 24, 2012 8:01 am

    #34 jtl

yep, it’s just a poll…btw, the warriors are ranked #1 this year too…in the haka poll!

  41. Shoko July 24, 2012 8:01 am

Thats a good question to ask. How is Rolo filling into the role of OC and how much of the play calling duties will he have.

  42. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 8:08 am

    @haka

    dat’s da bess kine polls.

  44. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 24, 2012 8:16 am

Let the poaching begin. Chow has shown interest in running back Curtis Dukes from Penn State.

A WR here a couple of O-Line there.

Even if we secure 2nd string players from Penn State, they are probably just as good if not better than many of the 1st string guys in the MWC.

  45. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 8:16 am

Eyeing a running back I see.

  46. Ipu Man July 24, 2012 8:17 am

btw, Ichiro yesindeedy is a Yankee. Long time coming. But is only for one year.

He will be a free agent next year…

    Running Back?

    🙄

  48. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 8:19 am

Then Vele can go back to LB.

  49. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 24, 2012 8:20 am

Curtis Dukes was a 4* RB according to Scout.

  50. haka July 24, 2012 8:21 am

Dukes may be on the field in the opener, but it may not be for the Warriors… 🙁

  51. Shoko July 24, 2012 8:24 am

Heard the Mariners kicked in some cash along with the trade. Wonder how much.

  52. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 24, 2012 8:26 am

    #50 haka,

Yeah, I don’t know how good our chances are at securing him or anyone else. Demarest knows the area so hopefully he can make something happen.

  53. jm2375 July 24, 2012 8:29 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Happy Anniversary Wena & ST!

Happy Birthday to the Warrior Beat!

I started lurking sometime during the 2007 season and first posted in Mar 08. My first t-gate visit was sometime during the 08 season. The infamous BP was first sighted at a SuperBowl tv-gate. I’m so grateful for the many friends I’ve met through this blog. We may have differences of opinion but we all love the 5 Fs.

  54. (Jesse) James July 24, 2012 8:32 am

Good Morning Tsaikos….Eh, ST, no porget, it’s your anniversary….LOL

  55. haka July 24, 2012 8:34 am

    @iwwthm

on the news last night they said he was looking into USC, but we can only hope!

    Go Warriors!

  56. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2012 8:42 am

The Dukes situation is like the NBA’s rule for restricted free agents.

Dukes may test the water — Pacific Ocean, to be specific (hey, why not get a free trip to paradise) — but, in the end, USC has the right to match.

As Chow said: USC doesn’t recruit. It evaluates.

  57. Ipu Man July 24, 2012 8:48 am

Wonder if Curtis Dukes knows about Hawaii’s famous Dukes…

    Doris and Duke…

  58. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2012 8:52 am

So, I’m at lunch, chatting away with a really friendly guy.

Later, someones says: Wasn’t the Air Force coach nice?”

    I had no idea.

  59. djmitcho July 24, 2012 8:58 am

Happy Anniversary to the Tsai’s! Happy Birthday to the Blog! I’m grateful for the blogs existence. I’ve meet many awesome people here and love the fact that our love for UH football has brought so many strangers together as one big ohana.

  60. SteveM July 24, 2012 8:59 am

    Good morning everyone!

    ST — happy Anniversary!

    Happy Birthday Warrior Beat!

  61. Shoko July 24, 2012 9:04 am

Interesting. Curtis Dukes is related to Greg Oden.

  62. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2012 9:05 am

    . . . and Duke Kim Han, Roosevelt’s starting quarterback in 1977 and ’78?

  63. (Jesse) James July 24, 2012 9:13 am

…and “Squirmin” Herman “Duke Lukela” Wedemeyer…Hawaii football legend and Hawaii Five-O actor…..

  64. Pomai July 24, 2012 9:22 am

Sorry to disagree we don’t need no stinkin RB from anywhere we got our own – Joey Iosefa, Sterling Jackson, John Lister are just what we need. Joey Iosefa is going to have one heck of a year IMHO.

  65. hilousupaman July 24, 2012 9:32 am

At 6’1, 241 lbs, maybe Curtis will be used as FB or TE?

  66. Shoko July 24, 2012 9:32 am

  77. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 10:32 am

  81. HawaiiMongoose July 24, 2012 10:45 am

You gotta like Edwards cutting his hair to show the UH-USC point spread. Talk about a constant reminder to stay focused and motivated… not just for him but for his teammates too. Way to go Mike.

  82. RedZone July 24, 2012 10:52 am

UH has contacted Dukes according to this article.

    http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20120723/NEWS09/707239891

  83. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 10:56 am

I thought UH was not allowed to directly contact the Penn St. players?

  84. RedZone July 24, 2012 11:01 am

Just need to notify the school first. The school no can say no.

  85. d1shima July 24, 2012 11:02 am

    GO WARRIORS!

  86. al July 24, 2012 11:04 am

the purging of the penn state football program has become en vogue. when its over some say 50% of the returnees and maybe a lot more of the new recruits will find themselves in another uniform.

already their best rb may sign with usc in the next two days. (as if they need more talent)

  87. d1shima July 24, 2012 11:05 am

    Notification

PSU Coach: Hey, Dukes, some guy from Hawaii is asking if you’d like to check out their scene.

    Dukes: Whatcha think, Coach?

PSU Coach: I think I better go with you and make sure it’s all good!

    😉

  88. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 11:05 am

So Dukes initiated contact, got it.

Now we need a punter to knock on the door.

  89. tommui July 24, 2012 11:07 am

#83 Jimmy the Lock asked: “thought UH was not allowed to …contact the Penn State players”

    We did.

“We’re going to take our swings.”

  90. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 11:07 am

Try wait, try wait. I’m confused.

  91. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 11:08 am

Oh, so UH contacted someone in the PSU coaching staff.

  92. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 11:09 am

Dukes should just stay at PSU. It may be his time to shine there.

  98. wafan July 24, 2012 11:12 am

    He definitely did.

  99. wafan July 24, 2012 11:13 am

    7th place?

    No problem.

  100. wafan July 24, 2012 11:14 am

Just finish 6th or better to silence the doubter.

  101. wafan July 24, 2012 11:15 am

    Oops.

    doubter = doubters.

I am certain there is more than one out there.

  102. wafan July 24, 2012 11:15 am

    What is for lunch?

  103. John Fitzgerald Byers July 24, 2012 11:17 am

Chasing championships are what you do when you are not given what you fully deserve to have in order to fulfill expectations set by administration. Teams with the full backing of admin get championships more than chase them.

Chow will do well with what he has and more. In the end, it all trickles from top to bottom.

  104. d1shima July 24, 2012 11:19 am

    wafan,

Hope your leg is better today

  105. BigWave96744 July 24, 2012 11:23 am

Stephen, the picture od Edwards, by UH athletics Facebook, shows Edwards with 38 1/2

    Did the spread drop?

  106. papajoe2 July 24, 2012 11:23 am

    Again. Where in Pearl City?

  107. wafan July 24, 2012 11:23 am

Yup. Leg is better thanks to good drugs.

Interesting time at the ER yesterday. Lots of fun — yeah, kind of strange . . .

  108. jimmy the lock July 24, 2012 11:24 am

Many BCS schools with backing of admin are still chasing championships.

  109. d1shima July 24, 2012 11:37 am

    BigWave,

Maybe as his hair grows out, the spread will continue to disappear?

    heheheh

  110. A-House July 24, 2012 11:43 am

    Noooooooooooooo!

keep the point spread as high as it can go until 8/10/12.

    #39 Ipu Man,

Rolo’s biggest obstacle will be his Head Coach. Talking about going to the R&S is one thing. What happens after a few 3 and outs? The HC okole going pucker and go back to what he’s comfortable with.

I like Rolo a lot but it ain’t going to be easy.

I have not seen or heard coach Chow very much except for news sound bites. But I do notice he uses the corporate “we” a lot. It appears that he uses a more collaborative approach to leadership or is this the trend among the contemporary coaching fraternity. Obviously, there was a lot of political correctness in his responses. One question was leading him toward the off field stuff of late but it was deftly deflected or non-answered.

Warrior Dave~While playing Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, et al, who are all looking for a national championship, 1 64-7 blow out, because of the lack of a number of quality players, especially in the 1st few games of the year, will the 107, still show up? Will the big money boosters run away? Remember, the teams that PSU plays will not show any mercy to move up in the polls. Maybe I should check their schedule. Didn’t they sign a big name coach to take Joe Pa’s place. Maybe he will get frustrated with his hands tied and leave for a better opportunity. Just saying.

    Terrific.

When the next outbreak of Sars or Swine flu hits, New York’s John F Kennedy airport and Los Angeles’s airports will likely be the key spreaders of disease, according to a new study. But while the influence of these super-hubs may not come as much of a surprise, the third most outbreak-friendly airport in the states is far smaller, and far less obvious – Honolulu International.

For starters, the multi-brand system conforms for the theory of industry advancement, i.e. the trade growth procedure exists for constantly enlarging and subdividing markets. Penn St. will get past the current sanctions as though it’s just a speed bump. $60 million? Nothing. Player transfers? I will be surprised if more than two upper-class players transfer. Recruiting? I wondered how USC survived their scholarship reductions? Easy. Don’t renew ten scholarship players considered marginal. Easy math. 15 + m10 = 25. In Penn St’s case, maybe as many as fifteen the first year of the sanctions. Build a solid foundation for four years. Be selective in recruiting only the best. Then put the program into cruise control for the next four years. Fan and alumni support will carry the program. Not for a second do I see them throwing in the towel.

  147. earl tanaka July 24, 2012 4:27 pm

I see/hear them singing “Sweet Caroline” even louder.

  148. Shoko July 24, 2012 4:32 pm

Not a very inspirational opening statement by Bob Davie. Basically, 7 minutes of speaking of how bad the Lobos are and will be this season. Took notice of the players and they almost looked embarrassed to be up there. I felt bad. 🙁

Sort of chuckled when Bobby Hauck said he hopes to get into a bowl game this year. After giving him getting a contract extension after a two-win record the last couple of seasons, I suppose if he gets three wins, he’ll get a raise. And people wonder why UNLV football program is struggling.

Chow said, more hard-nosed defense and a balanced offense. Offense will be less exciting compared to the the R&S. Are the days of putting up 40 plus points on the board gone forever? No more pass-happy offense makes me very pass-sad. Oh well, change is good. Just as long as you win, baby!

  149. Shoko July 24, 2012 4:45 pm

Thats it for now, I guess. 38 more days and counting.

{or PowerPoint, Microsoft have introduced new tools with Office 2010 to make things just a little bit easier for those who’d like a one-stop-shop program. Rather than fiddling with two different programs at the same time to get things just right, you can use Office’s new functionality to perform basic photo editing tasks and apply some surprisingly lovely picture effects and corrections. This saves your IT support the effort of training you to use a new program and gives you an opportunity to make more professional documents and presentations with hardly any extra effort.

Sherman “George Jefferson”…Hemsley was born and raised in South Philadelphia by his mother, who was a factory worker. He dropped out of school and joined the United States Air Force, where he served for four years. On leaving the Air Force, he returned to Philadelphia where he worked for the Post Office during the day while attending acting school at night. He then moved to New York, continuing to work for the Post Office during the day while working as an actor at night.

Thar’s hope for all you postal workers out there.

What a wonderfully diverse, creative, and amazing group of folks you are!!

What a robust, resilient, amusing, and unexpected journey it has been!

Thank you all for welcoming me and my family to the party. We look forward to seeing you at the tailgates again this fall.

And thank you, Stephen, for creating and nurturing this place.

Not an Expert: The news stories I read said the $60 million will go to a non-profit which will work to prevent child abuse and help those who have been abused.

    g’morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    ST

great video on Paipai and Edwards. nice to see their faces and their positive outlooks in Vegas. good for them.

and great video too on Jim Donovan “explaining” the Wonder cancellation, and the even greater video about the upper campus fallout.

with HLN all over the story, blazing away at Mr. Peyton, the obvious questions are running through my mind.

Mr. Kuniyuki says his clients are cooperating with the investigation. I’d like to know how far along this “investigation” has gone? My confidence in eliminating the babuuz fakta was terribly shaken when i saw the videos tagged to the video you posted this morning ST.

On that note, I am very happy that Mr. Freitas has stepped in. I hope he gets a great deputy attorney general to help him get to the bottom of things, beings that UH Legal may have a conflict of interest too. I mean, the Guv can direct peeps at the AG to help.

Give Bob Peyton the Tony Robbins experience. 😆

    BHF2 ~

    Good morning counselor!

There is a thick layer of *Babuuz* vog hanging over the upper campus. This makes it very difficult to think clearly up there.

We also need to eliminate the deadwood up there beginning with the Chancellor. (why gotta be one carpet baggah anywayz?). The others better dive for cover! Hehehe.
