Credit the transfers

News item: Quarterback Sean Schroeder (Duke) and center Kapua Sai (Utah) completed their transfers to UH and will be eligible to play this season.

Impact: Both will compete for starting jobs. Schroeder, who will be a walk-on, is in the mix with David Graves and Jeremy Higgins. Sai, who can play all five line positions, is the Warrior with the most experience in Norm Chow’s version of the pro-set offense. (Chow was Utah’s offensive coordinator in 2011.) Before entering talks with both players, Chow waited to receive the blessings of their head coaches. Chow also notified quarterback Taylor Graham, who is redshirting after transferring from Ohio State.

Why Schroeder: He sought out UH because of Chow’s success with quarterbacks in the pro-set offense, a version Duke employed last year. Schroeder spent the past month training with quarterback guru Bob Johnson. Chow requires intelligence from his quarterbacks; Schroeder earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke in three years. Chow has done well with left-handed quarterbacks (Steve Young, Matt Leinart).

Why Sai (OK, that sounded like the title of a video-chat show): The Warriors struggled to find 10 ย healthy o-linemen for spring practices. Sai and JC transfer Mike Milovale provide athleticsm, power-blocking skill and maturity to a unit that does not have a senior. Sai, like Schroeder, earned a BA in three years.

NO Wonder our greatest potential adversary and OWNER (already OWN >40% of USA, do we allow CHINA to get to >50+%?)… Thinks of US as babies (newbies at 236 versus mature perserverents @ 4,500+)…They think (their strategy & manifesto) that they WILL (eventually) Defeat US UpStarts with No Proven Lasting Power just With their Piracy (Reverse Engineering), Perseverance And Billions…

WE Think we Can Slow Them down by Keeping Them Out of Our RIMPAC?

  40. WarriorNY July 4, 2012 6:24 am

These two transfers will def help our team this year.

So Coach Chow notified Taylor Graham but not Graves or Higgins? Interesting… I hope Graves can get a handle on the offense so he can show what he can do. Fall 2013 should be interesting with Shroeder, Graves, Graham, Shutter, Higgins, and Zwahlen all competing for the number 1 spot.

I find it funny that our TE (Clark Evans) was ranked higher as a QB recruit than Graves, Shutter, Higgins and was only two spots behind Schroeder… That 2009 class has a lot of familiar names like Barkley(USC), Gilbert(SMU), Carr(FSU), Southwick(BSU), Forcier(who knows?) and Padron(SMU/EWU) to name a few…

  43. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2012 6:29 am

I don’t know if he consulted with Graves or Higgins. But because he recruited Graham, he wanted to let him know. Graham is on scholarship. Schroeder is not.

  44. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2012 6:31 am

Evans will not be competing as a quarterback.

  45. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2012 6:36 am

I think Graves, Higgins and Woolsey are confident enough to compete vigorously for the starting job.

  46. WarriorNY July 4, 2012 6:38 am

    ST,

I know Evans won’t be competing at QB. I just found it funny that our TE was ranked as a QB recruit above almost all of our QB’s.

    re: Graham,

    That makes sense.

  47. WarriorNY July 4, 2012 6:45 am

It just shows how hit and miss those recruiting rankings are…

Very glad to hear that Graves, Higgins and Woolsey will compete vigorously for the job. That’s the kind of fire we need…

I mentioned a BSU QB that is listed as 5’10” 185 lbs before. His name is Nick Patti out of Florida. He’s a very accurate QB (based on video highlights) that has some speed (4.46 – 40) and has been compared to Kellen Moore. There seems to be alot of hype coming from Bronco Nation regarding thsi kid. Although Patti will redshort thsi season, I’m somewhat interested seeing him play. Never know, he could be the next Doug Flutie.

    Too many Quarterbacks?

    Graves, Jr.

    Shutter, Jr.

    Higgins, So.

    Woolsey, Fr.

    Alo, Fr.

    Graham, Jr. (redshirt)

    Schroeder, Jr.

    Ewaliko, 2013 commit

    Zwahlen, 2013 commit

Did I miss somebody? You would like to think that one of the bunch is the holy grail. Fact is, nobody in the bunch that’s eligible this year is a clear cut starter and only Graves has had meaningful experience in a UH uniform. Shutter maybe has only some mop up work in game(s). A lot of intrigue and may the best man win the job in fall camp. It is hard to imagine that a guy that didn’t even play at Duke in 3 years would be the starter on day 1 against USC. I can’t see it. I think it will come down to Graves, Higgins, or Woolsey and who does the best in not making stupid mistakes. The QB position is all about leadership, efficiency, and being heady and smart. Good luck to all the QBs because they are all Warriors and play for the Home Team.

Well, we bought two bone-in ribeye steaks at Times a few hours ago. They are 1.05 lbs each and nice and thick. I’ll marinate them in teriyaki sauce for 2 hrs before broiling them.

Yup, we’re broiling instead of grilling today. Hubby is too lazy to bring out the gas grill for only 2 steaks. Too much of a hassle.

  92. gigi-hawaii July 4, 2012 9:35 am

Welcome to the Warriors Sean Schroeder and Kapua Sai!

Graduating early shows that they are smart and that they are serious about the student part of student-athlete, a great thing. Intelligence is especially important at QB and OL, so it will be interesting to see how well they do for UH over the next 2 years.

The WAC is considering dropping football. It is quite sad to think about all the schools that used to be part of the WAC and where it is now.

The Western Athletic Conference is exploring an option that would take the league into a future without football beginning in 2013.

Conference interim commissioner Jeff Hurd stipulated this week the WAC must make a decision on a future course in the next few weeks. Hurd noted that the conference’s board of directors has a number of options available for consideration, one of which would be to proceed as a nonfootball league.

  102. Garret July 4, 2012 9:54 am

Even schools in the big-money conferences are struggling with athletic deficits. Cal cut a bunch of athletic teams and now Maryland cut 7 sports. As budget cuts hit the Academic side, Athletic Departments are being pushed to avoid deficits and even pay all of their costs without any subsidy from their Upper Campus. At least at UH we don’t hear Upper Campus talking about the $10 mil they give the Athletic Department each year (line item in UHAD’s budget that was released was I think $10.2 mil from Upper Campus):

Menโ€™s and womenโ€™s swimming; menโ€™s tennis; womenโ€™s water polo; acrobatics and tumbling (formerly known as competitive cheer); and two menโ€™s track programs, cross-country and indoor track and field, were eliminated.

  105. Garret July 4, 2012 10:20 am

    Tom Mui,

I caught up with the blog and saw you asking what I thought about the system that is replacing the BCS. Frankly, I don’t see how the changes benefit UH. For example, under this system the 2007 UH school would be in the Hawaii Bowl instead of the Sugar Bowl, costing UH millions.

The way that SOS and rankings are being emphasized, I don’t think that any MWC school would make the playoffs even if they go undefeated. The system seems weighted to get 2 SEC schools, and 2 of the champions from the Big 12, Big 10, and Pac-10. The money will surely be weighted towards the teams participating, just like the NCAA basketball tournament does.

Even if you don’t count the Sugar Bowl year, UH has gotten a bigger proportion of BCS football money when compared to the AQ conferences than UH has gotten from NCAA basketball money. If they had used the NCAA basketball payout model for football, UH could have received less money during the BCS era. That is why I’m *very* suspicious of any new system and how they “share” the money with the MWC and others.

Two key provisions in the new system that bother me:

    1. No limit to the number of teams from the SEC, Big 10 and other conferences. The only reason why the SEC and Big 10 didn’t get more BCS spots was that they were forbidden from having more than 2 schools in BCS bowls…they were openly unhappy with that limitation and now they can get more big-money spots.

    2. No guarantee that a top-12 or top-8 MWC school will get a big-money bowl. On the other hand, schools from the Pac-12, Big 10, SEC, Big 12, and ACC are *guaranteed* spots in big money bowls for their school not in the playoffs. No “BCS buster” provision and no set rules make me suspicious of the system.

Put it this way: in the current system, the 6th place SEC school is guaranteed FAR more money in a bowl game now than the MWC champion. That is because they get better TV ratings and bring more fans. If a big-money bowl can choose between the 3rd place Big 10 school and the MWC champion, we can look at the current bowl payouts and ratings to see which school would get picked…and the data isn’t good for the MWC.

By claiming that they are just picking 4 teams for a playoff, the other big-money bowls have more flexibility to pick who they want (or manipulate the system and hide behind the “committee”). Unless some provisions are put into place that protect the MWC, I don’t feel good about this system.

On the positive side, after these 10 years are out and people like the 4-team playoff, they will probably need to expand the playoffs to 8 teams and there will be a realistic shot for UH to make the playoff. But that is a long time to wait for a system that gives UH less opportunity than they have now.

  106. Tremendous things here. I’m very happy to peer your post. Thank you a lot and I am having a look ahead to touch you. Will you please drop me a mail?

  107. d1shima July 4, 2012 10:44 am

    Garret,

I wouldn’t bank on a MWC berth in an 8 team playoff. Two SEC schools played in the “finals” last season. It would be quite easy to see 2 teams from at least 3 of the 4 most powerful conferences (SEC, B10, B12, Pac12) leaving the remaining 2 to the ACC and the Big LEast.

…this assumes they are all around then, of course!

  108. d1shima July 4, 2012 10:46 am

…taking that into account, the detriment to schools like UH would be huge when they cut back on regular season games too accommodate a 3 round playoff.

  109. Kekoa July 4, 2012 10:47 am

Attention Al ~ It was only because I took time last night to read thru volumes of blog postings here on the WB that I noted that I had missed your birthday.

So I figured that I would make up for my shortcoming by sending out a special song to you written and sung by Paul Simon at a live Concert.

I chose his Concert in Africa because I had uncovered a story about you and the President. It tells of you & Barry’s arrival here in Hawaii as part of a Foreign Service trade deal at birth.

  111. Garret July 4, 2012 10:49 am

    d1shima,

Yes, I’m really worried that any expansion of the playoffs will result in a shorter regular season. UH won’t get any money from an expanded playoffs and the loss of a game could cost UH more than $1 mil.

Garret: it’s always good to hear your thoughts. What do you think of Boise State’s move to the Big East in light of the new NCAA playoff format and the new makeup of the the Big East? Will Boise earn sufficient TV and other revenue from the move to make it worthwhile for them financially even not considering where they will place their non-football sports?

To get rid of bone fragments, I rinsed the steaks in tap water.

Now, I am marinating them in teri sauce and placed the pan on the counter.

Gee, Shoko, should I keep these steaks outside for 4 hours before cooking time? Or should I do this just ONE HOUR before broiling them?

Hey ST, it was my pleasure! You have a terrific ohana! Wena is a winnah! It was a nice group of people I met today and the little people we’re so adorable!

Gigi, I prefer the Hebrew hotdog cause it’s kosher but it’s so expensive that hubs will only buy it when price is right at Costco.

Broiled a homemade burger for lunch (thanks to D1)!

  194. WarriorNY July 4, 2012 5:15 pm

Mo808: would love to chat with you in person. Can you join us for dinner at Hale Ikena at Ft Shafter on Thursday July 12 at 5 pm?

  197. manoa#1 July 4, 2012 5:28 pm

    st,

i heard they were not arrested but was written up with a citation to appear in court, the mess up thing about this is coach demarst (db coach) who recruited them gave them a ride to walmart and waited in his car while the 2 recruits went inside to shop. they shoplifted. to me coach Demarst should of driven them straight to the airport put them on a plane and send their asses home.

  198. mo808 July 4, 2012 5:50 pm

Gigi, let me see if I can manage that. We have grad parties to attend on the 13th and 14th so I think hubs would not mind another day off from cooking ๐Ÿ™‚ On the twelfth, my shift ends at five. I’ll check tomorrow if I can switch and let you know.

  199. mo808 July 4, 2012 5:51 pm

  205. tommui July 4, 2012 6:51 pm

    manoa#1 re #197

    Where did this story originate?

Unless there was an arrest, no citation to appear in court can be made.

  206. tommui July 4, 2012 6:52 pm

    #202 duffer – make $$$!

  207. gigi-hawaii July 4, 2012 7:00 pm

well, those bone in rib eye steaks were soooooo onolicious!!!!

I marinated them in teriyaki sauce for 4 hrs and broiled them for 5 min on each side at the top rack in the oven.

    TENDER, JUICY, TASTY!!!

  208. gigi-hawaii July 4, 2012 7:02 pm

and guess what, the same ribeye that sold for $6.99 at Times cost $10.99 at Sack n Save.

mahalo nui Kapakahi for the valuable tip!

  210. Ipu Man July 4, 2012 7:07 pm

    Is Mongolian BBQ kosher?

    ๐Ÿ™„

  211. Ipu Man July 4, 2012 7:13 pm

Oops, so I googled my own question and found many kosher Mongolian BBQs

abound, ie. in LV and Washinton State…

  214. tommui July 4, 2012 7:57 pm

#210 Ipuman – I doubt it. THere would be lamb, pork, chicken, beef etc and the serving spoons might be interchanged – even if the meats may have been inspected and approved by the rabbi.

  215. Bryson July 4, 2012 7:58 pm

I’m guessing Manoa #1 is the same poster who posted the story just by the whole “put them on a plane and send them home” line cause the person who posted on the sportshawaii board wrote the same thing word for word.

  216. koakane July 4, 2012 8:13 pm

    evening all

much booming tonight with the fireworks lighting up the night. hope everyone is enjoying the show

good Independence 4th of July and had a fun time so far

  217. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2012 8:41 pm

I did hear murmurs, but again I checked with police and the Prosecutor’s office and there was no arrest, no citation and no court appointment.

If I were to find any record or report, I will write the story. But there is no report or filing.

  218. gigi-hawaii July 4, 2012 8:43 pm

    ST: Is it a HOAX?

  219. wafan July 4, 2012 8:45 pm

    Rumors.

  220. wafan July 4, 2012 8:47 pm

    Long day.

    Nytal!

  221. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2012 8:48 pm

    Gigi:

I don’t know if it happened or didn’t happen, but I do know there is no record, report or filing.

I did spend two days checking.

  222. manoa#1 July 4, 2012 8:49 pm

#215 bryson no im not the same person but i did write the same statement he made cause i felt like that’s what they should do.

  223. bigislandkurt July 4, 2012 8:59 pm

    Bighilofan2…and other BI Tsaikos!

e kala mai. I cannot participate in the festivities this go around.

I catch up with you guys next time.

    BIK

  224. Bryson July 4, 2012 8:59 pm

Well I guess we’ll see in the coming weeks if the person who posted was misinformed or if this event actually took place…but I will say that it’s weird that no arrest were made cause I got arrested when I was 10-11 for shoplifting at longs…..So I have trouble believeing that they would just Recieve a citation and not be arrested in the spot…also I don’t see how they would still be allowed to attend team activities especially knowing a coach was present….

  225. bigislandkurt July 4, 2012 9:00 pm

Nathan’s is a pretty damn good hotdog though. My two favorite Hot dogs gotta be Nathan’s and Uncle Louie’s Maui reds. Yum on a bun or nice with rice. You choose.

    BIK

  226. bigislandkurt July 4, 2012 9:02 pm

With all those QB’s on the roster, it’s only natural that a few of them will eventually transfer out of here or play a new position. It has happened before and it will happen again.

    BIK

  227. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2012 9:08 pm

A real Nathan’s hotdog has the works.

  228. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:21 pm

I find it troublesome when a poster decides to post something like on a first time post of a negative nature and pointing blame such as types of individuals being offered schollies when in fact their are other positives not mentioned. Oh well, free country keep posting

  229. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:22 pm

    Their = there

  230. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:24 pm

    Learn from our mistakes!

  231. jm2375 July 4, 2012 9:26 pm

ST – “the works” = sauerkraut, onions, mustard, relish, ketchup? Did I miss anything? Some purists insist that putting ketchup on a hot dog or burger is sacrilege.

  232. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:26 pm

Coaches handle the situation if any and move on.

  233. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:27 pm

No hot dogs for me! Too much gout. Would be hurting for months after a hot dog eating comp.

  234. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:29 pm

So glad Kapua Sai got in! Much needed help for the offense

  235. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:34 pm

Work hard and best of luck to the QBs. May the best man start and bring home the W’s. Looking forward to see how everything takes shape this season

  236. Bugaz July 4, 2012 9:35 pm

Thanks for all the updates and photos

  237. Kevin July 4, 2012 9:58 pm

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with this…

Sports Hawaii and all message boards where you are required to register with a email address are subject to the rules of etiquette set by administrators. If I ran a message board or blogsite, I’d DELETE such non-sense otherwise confirmed through official channels. It would be my forum MY rules. It is not a public service or right.

It is a forum with rules and is NOT subject to the freedom of speech excuse to spread potential lies and whatnot.

On this day of independence, its pathetic to think that the spreading of lies falls under the protection of our amendment rights.

    What a joke.

  238. d1shima July 4, 2012 11:05 pm

  239. clyde July 4, 2012 11:38 pm

Whoa, Kevin got the power. The thread is no longer on the Sports Hawaii forum.

Now I am hungry for a puka dog…

Nighty night, folks… As for other message boards and the haters, illegitimi non carborundum.

    Go Warriors!

Morning all! It’s really great to hear about the added depth at QB and OL.

  244. krump1_AKA_protector July 5, 2012 4:57 am

    ST – re: Sonya Thomas

I suddenly realized that the lady you were talking about was the famous / infamous (and aptly-named) Black Widow” in coimpetitive-eating circles. And she eats a lot of things besides hot dogs, too. I read an article a couple of months ago where she ate a 10 pound turkey in 10 minutes…take a couple seconds to process that. She blew away her male competitors including a 400 pound guy. She can eat 11 pounds of cheesecake in 9 minutes, 29 dozen oysters in 8 minutes, etc. She only weighs about 103 pounds. Anyway, if you invite her to a Tsaiko tailgate, she could literally consume most the food there, lol.

  245. Hank July 5, 2012 5:04 am

Aloha Kakahiaka gang…Yeah, Steve NASH to the LAKERS!

  246. krump1_AKA_protector July 5, 2012 5:25 am

I’ve always been a huge fan of Steve Nash. After this trade to the Lakers though…he’s “dead” to me now. Rats, just when I thought I wouldn’t need to hear about the Lakers for awhile.
