London calling

When he played football and baseball at UH, Jason Ross was known for his cool and calm demeanor. But as the father of an Olympic hopeful, he is unabashedly excited about the path leading to his daughter Kyla’s participation in the London Games.

“It’s very exciting times right now,” said Ross, whose daughter was named to the five-member U.S. gymnastics team. “Nerve-racking, but exciting.”

He added: “When it’s your child, and you see all of the hard work she puts in, and hopefully she can achieve all of her dreams, it’s exciting.”

Ross works for one of the top recruiting firms in Orange County. It is fitting, considering he was a highly sought recruit as a multi-sport high school athlete. Ross chose UH, which he described as “one of the best decisions.”

He said he has “fond memories. I enjoyed the experience. I’ve always loved Hawaii and UH.”

Ross’ wife Kiana was raised in Hawaii. His sister-in-law is former UH volleyball player Nohea Tano LaBoy, who is married to Travis LaBoy.

Happy birthday to Mark Takai.

And birthday wishes to the next Jimmy Choo — former UH lineman Aaron Kia.

And, last but not least, happy birthday to Rico Nakashima.

Hey, nice follow up, Stephen. Women’s gymnastics of high interest in our household and I was pulling for Kyla (born in Hawaii) the other night. Googled Jason, but couldn’t find anything. He was quite an athlete; good to see he’s doing well. Hope Kyla makes it. We’ll be watching.

    Thanks PowderPuff.

I was ready to write about Boise, when she called and set up the chat with Jason Ross. He’s a good guy who broke Bob Wagner’s heart when he went full-time to baseball.

  7. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2012 10:28 am

By the way, if I were a UH fan, I would be all for Boise State going to the Big West.

Its non-football sports aren’t anything special.

So, they would pay more and win less.

As for BSU’s football team, all the talk is about how the Broncos want to be in the four-team playoff. A two- or three-loss season, and Connecticut having to travel to Idaho in November, and soon Big East folks will wonder: Is it worth it?

  8. HEINEKEN July 1, 2012 10:28 am

Im calling it. If Big East raids again , Hawaii football will become an independent in football

  36. Wes'side Warrior July 1, 2012 1:35 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

Man, what a great and crazy game! Mo was definitely doing his thing and having fun. The Georgia crowd absolutely mobbed him for autographs, and to thank him for playing for their team after the game ended! There’s quite a lot of life-long Georgia Force fans just eating this stuff up! So proud of Mo!

Right before kickoff, one of the Force players told us that Torres was released. Too bad. Didn’t feel like he was given a good chance.

We expected a huge turnout of Warrior Green. But, due to the heat and the middle-of-the-day start time, many decided to not make the drive at the last minute. So, instead, there were only eight of us, plus a family of four that we met at the game. Still had lots of fun, though. Three of my kids, plus Bruddah Brandon’s wife, Lisa, were caught on the tv cams. Hope we get to see it when the video is posted next week on Ustream.

So, with the low turnout, and how busy Bryant was, we decided not to sing today. We’ll do it after their final regular season home game on the 14th of July.

You guys would not believe how quickly Moniz has become to popular! There were so many kids and adults wearing #9 Force jerseys already! And he is so gracious patient with everyone. What a terrific representative for our school, state, and people!

As far as our tailgate… it was just too hot to do much of anything! I passed out a bunch of spam musubi and bottled water, and then gave out a couple of cheesecake that my wife baked (at 1-2:30 am this morning) to the two families that were parked next to me.

Overall, a great day! Moniz really electrified the crowd and team today! The boyz are really rallying around him. So good to see his leadership shine through!

  37. Wes'side Warrior July 1, 2012 1:37 pm

Oh, forgot to mention one other thing…

The opposing QB? Maybe you guys remember him, or the team he played for…? Chris Leak.

  38. Ipu Man July 1, 2012 1:46 pm

Chris Leak led the Florida Gators to victory in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game.

Here he is being buddy buddy with Georgie Bush in pix at white house.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Leak

  39. Ipu Man July 1, 2012 1:48 pm

    Too bad about Torres…

He just looked out of sync last week.

Well, if Abraham Lincoln can lose and then come back and win the presidency,

Torres can come back and win some games for someone, somewhere…

  40. Ipu Man July 1, 2012 1:49 pm

Torres would make a heck of a graduate assistant for some school…

  41. Shoko July 1, 2012 2:05 pm

Didn’t watch the entire game, but what I did catch was Mo having a great game. Sorry to hear about Torres. Things happen for a reason and can lead to greater things.

Oh, I did catch this kid holding a sign that read “UH-Force” along with Mo and Torres’ name. Figure they might be part of MW’s Georgia clan.

  42. RedZone July 1, 2012 2:19 pm

The force could use some help on defense.

  43. wafan July 1, 2012 2:27 pm

    Whew!

What is up with the heat and humidity?!?!

  44. wafan July 1, 2012 2:27 pm

    Go Mo!

May the Force be with you . . . looks like it was.

  45. wafan July 1, 2012 2:30 pm

    SteveM . . .

Sent a bunch of pix Saturday night. Did you receive them?

  46. wafan July 1, 2012 2:34 pm

How long will it be before BSu starts complaining about the loooooong eastward trips and the time zone changes it has to make several times each year?

  47. wafan July 1, 2012 2:34 pm

Heck, how long will it be before the other teams start complaining about the long westward trips and the time zone changes they have to make each year and about having to play on that interesting blue turf?

  48. wafan July 1, 2012 2:37 pm

Perhaps BSu can buy the UH vote of approval and their own membership to the BWC next time by agreeing to pay for everyone’s travel expenses to and from Hawai’i and Boise.

  49. wafan July 1, 2012 2:38 pm

    Good luck to Kyla!

Hope your dream of the Olympics come true!!!

Yeah, Shoko… those were “3of7, 4of7, and 5of7” of my kids, with a sign that Bruddah Brandon and his wife, Lisa made!

  53. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2012 3:05 pm

WW: Too bad about the small turnout at the game. Maybe, because of this victory, more fans will show up next time. Everyone loves a winner.

  54. Wes'side Warrior July 1, 2012 3:07 pm

RedZone’s right. The Force were lucky enough to make two stops early in the game, and then hold on at the end to eeek one out.

After last week’s game between the Force and the Utah Blaze, the Blaze offensive coordinator said of Georgia… in the first half, they played zone, so we tried to do what we could with what they gave us. (Torres did not play in the first half.) But in the second half, (when Torres was put in), their defense went to man coverage. According to Utah’s OC, when they went to Man, we knew we could take advantage of it due to the players we have. And they did just that. But, I guess, in Georgia’s eyes, it was the fact that we gave up some TD’s while he was in, regardless of what the defensive scheme or personnel was.

    Almost like…

“Wasn’t too bad, walking on the sidewalk, chewing gum. But, change personnel, put ’em out in the middle of the street, while chewing gum, and all of a sudden, it’s a different and dangerous game.” Doesn’t matter that they didn’t do that in the first half with other players.

The guys they had back there in today’s game also gave up big TD’s. Just my opinion.

  55. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2012 3:12 pm

Yeah, Torres was a force to reckon with at UH. He was great. Hope he finds another team soon.

  56. Wes'side Warrior July 1, 2012 3:15 pm

Oh no, Gigi. It was the second highest turnout for a home Force game this season. Just was a small UH turnout today. Most messages I got were from friends who did not feel like driving 45 minutes to 4 hours, one way, in this heat, in the middle of the day, only to repeat it at 7pm or so, when everything is done. But I have a feeling we will have a much better turnout for their last regular season home game on 14July. Moniz has got the whole area buzzing, and many are already talking about next season!

  57. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2012 3:21 pm

WW: Sorry I misunderstood. Seems Moniz has charisma that attracts fans. Good for him!

    Re: Petition.

Not sure if the Roughriders will budge, but if the intent is to call attention to the situation, then it’s a worthwhile goal.

If this doesn’t work, I think that Colt should make his own tape, then show up at several team facilities and just audition. If it’s a last shot, go out with a bang. Bring medical records, anything. Even if it means working out in a parking lot. Give it a best shot, and if it doesn’t work, then live the rest of your life in peace.
