Sunday blessings

It’s time that good deeds get noticed.
So here’s to:
• The UH baseball players who help put down the tarp during rain delays. Their quick work enabled the teams to outlast the showers and resume the game.
• Kara Nishimura, the assistant sports media relations director, who is the official scorer for every home softball game. During the recent tournament, she worked five games, the first starting at 9 a,m. and the last ending at 10 p.m. She’s also in charge of the music. She does everything but call out the B-I-N-G-O numbers.
• The K5 technical crew. To set up the panoramic shot, a camera has to be placed on the roof of the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium press box. Thing is, the only way to access the roof is to place a ladder on the side of the second-level structure. The technician then must scale the ladder— in the wind, and often the rain — with a 20-foot drop to the side.
• Wesley Uchida, the lone groundskeeper for UH’s Lower Campus.
• The UH men’s volleyball players. Sure, they’re in a slump. But they’re doing their best to save the department money. On road trips, they sleep three to a room (somebody gets the rollaway bed). That goes for the coaches, too. No single rooms, not even for the head coach.

ST bowled an incredible game tonite! Homey bested all evening scores with his solo game in the end. Hurray for South Paws!

JaM and her ‘ohana put on an awesome bowling clinic for us.

The bowlers got better as the evening went on. They started out making field goals. Then started doing touchdowns in batches.

  5. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2009 1:12 am

I think the blog host had his best game, ever, and then, to quote from “The Sun Also Rises,” it went gradually and then suddenly.
By the second game, I was just praying to stay out of the gutter.

None from the so-called pink side.
Although there were plenty of bloggers using the pink balls.

  13. al ™ March 15, 2009 1:23 am

pink balls. are you sure you want to publish that description?

    anyway, aren’t they red?

  14. addahknowjoe March 15, 2009 1:24 am

We had dinner at Mexico Lindo: Stretch, Midori, UHfan808, Rob25, Iwonderwhytheyhateme, Jason, A-sports and me. Then we headed over to bowling. JaM and her ohana were waiting there. SteveM and Peaches came by as well. Then ST showed up and began to systematically put on a fricken ass woopin on the lanes. Then Jessie James showed up after his dinner engagement. The surprise of the evening was when Homey showed up. For one braddah who never bowled in his life he picked up a game super fast. His third roll he threw a strike. By nights end he bowled the best game. Unreal! Total natural!

  15. addahknowjoe March 15, 2009 1:25 am

al- as funny as this may seem, the ladies had blue balls.

Homey is unreal. midway through the evening he completely figured out the game. The ladies were struggling with their games and Homey instructed them they needed bigger balls.

Yes, Kelli, Julie and I had “blue balls” 🙄

It was fun night for all. The bowling alley started clearing out right after we left. We knew it was because they said…hey the fun people are gone…time for us to leave too.

The sun is out, and the water is blue, it’ll be a great day mon.

    Hi-ho

  28. Garret March 15, 2009 4:29 am

    ST,

It is great when the good work gets recognized of people like those you mentioned in your blog. Kara Nishimura, Wesley Uchida, and others are doing the work of multiple people, with their extra effort saving the Athletic Department money. That K5 technician really has a hard job!

  29. Garret March 15, 2009 4:33 am

I have to wonder how badly all this cost-cutting is hurting the performance of the men’s volleyball team. Flying out a day later and staying 3 to a room is saving a lot of money…but I can’t imagine it has some effect on performance. I know that they won’t use this as an excuse, but it is sad to me that the current budget crisis forces teams to have such a competitive disadvantage as compared to how their competition travels.

  30. Garret March 15, 2009 4:37 am

    Al,

I’ve been using buddy passes for years…but it isn’t the same in terms of cost and priority of course. Lori even flew from SFO to HNL back in June 2001 while carrying on her wedding dress! She got one of the last seats available and we were happy that she didn’t have to go home and try again another day.

  31. Garret March 15, 2009 4:40 am

Samson was mentioned in a couple of articles today. Tom Flores sure doesn’t seem to feel that Grove is a $30 milllion upgrade over Samson.

Center Jake Grove: At 300 pounds, the former Raider is only a few pounds heavier than Samson Satele. But former Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist said he’s an upgrade. ”Stronger and stouter than Satele,” Williamson said.

Raiders radio analyst/former coach Tom Flores said Grove creates a good push on running plays. But like Satele, ”he has trouble with the premier nose guards, like Baltimore has.” And Grove’s pass blocking is ”adequate. I don’t think it’s great,” Flores said. ”The question is, can he stay healthy? Every time he got into a groove, he would get some injury. I don’t think Oakland would have paid” what Miami did [$14 million guaranteed].

  32. Garret March 15, 2009 4:42 am

This article mentions how Grove has to become Miami’s starting center after they gave him his $29.5 million contract.

And Miami believes it improved the interior offensive line with Jake Grove, who must supplant Samson Satele and raise the level of center play to be worth his $29.5 million contract.

  33. Garret March 15, 2009 4:44 am

  41. Kekoa March 15, 2009 6:30 am

dj ~ I was happy to read of your EIS testing going down as scheduled yesterday at the local Irish Pub. It sounds like you may have had a very successful green bottle inventory examination. A quick and easy recovery is important.

It’s so important to note the quality of the contents. Too much green gets to the ‘gills’ and that’s when we have to call in our resident EMT personnel, J(J). You hate to see that happen, but Koakane has come close to that situation a few times already, and Homey has had several close encounters. We are a bit under-staffed here, and await your return.

    Good morning everyone!

Yup, congrats to homey for his consistent games. The sandbagger. If he had bigger heavier balls last night, his score would be near my weight… 😆

  55. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2009 9:03 am

    Re: Samson
    He’s in a tough situation.
He has two years to go before free agency. He can’t request a trade. Well, he can request one, but he has no leverage.
Last year he played for his second o-line coach, and there wasn’t the chemistry that he had with the first one.
On the one side, he played courageously for someone with a really messed-up shoulder. When the doctors went in, they were surprised to see how extensive the damage.
On the other side, I guess that’s what led the Dolphins to act. They couldn’t go into OTAs without the security of having a set center. I’m sure Samson will bounce back, but the NFL is a business, and center is a key position.

  56. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2009 9:05 am

I’m always amazed to watch the lefties bowl. It’s like watching a good left-handed pitcher. A-Joe and Homey were tickling the left lane and then the bowling ball breaks toward the middle.
As opposed to righties, who just roll it down the middle.

  57. Kekoa March 15, 2009 9:59 am

ST ~ When Diana was making her run for Hawaii State Singles Title in the Spring/Summer of ’86, her ‘lefty’ delivery was awesome. Just at the right moment, it would swoop into pocket and blast doze pins.

Meanwhile I was dusting the lanes from the right hand side over at Ft Shafter, struggling to barely qualify for the All-Army team. Made a quick turn around at Ft. Sheridan, Ilinois as a pesky All-Navy team spanked us and sent us back home!

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid March 15, 2009 10:33 am

I have faith in Samson. What the coaches don’t appreciate is his heart.

Three questions about this situation, Mr. Tsai:

What precisely was the nature of his shoulder injury?
How much of a factor was it during his play this year?
What is the long term medical prognosis?

My point is, if this injury was a hindrance to him this year and affected his play, that needs to be considered. If it is the kind of injury which surgery or other treatment can correct, then I predict that he will be back, better than ever.

I’d put a healthy Samson up against anybody, and expect him to be very competitive. We need to remember that Samson is one of the toughest and most competitive men ever to play for the Warriors.

ai-eee-soos No not really, but I do know that you have to tread lightly when it comes to getting rid of a civil service employee, which I think he is even thought he had a contract. It is really hard to actually fire a civil service employee, most often I have seen a department head move someone to another department or another area within the same department, you couldn’t believe the amount of paper work alone, plus the most important thing is that “You had better have all your ducks lined up right” or it can get very ugly.

  71. d1島 March 15, 2009 1:40 pm

The comment about the K5 tech who climbs up on the roof to place the camera reminds me of all those shots on Discovery and NatGeo.
Ever wonder about those shots of the climber coming at you as he reaches the summit; the diver entering the underwater cave; the shark attacking the divers in the cage? All those shots from the perspective of someone who was already in place, by a person who was lugging around a camera (and recently an even bulkier, heavier HD camera).

My favorites are those shots from the water of the crab boats in Deadliest Catch; even holding the camera with a boom means the camera operator is dangling over the side of the boat! 😯

My best man was a manager in a civil service department, he had a guy that was a total idiot, but he had been shifted from department to department, so when he ended up in my friends department my friend decided that it had to end and they needed to just get rid of the guy, well it took five years of documented screw-up’s to finally get the guy canned.

Anybody up to date on the rules about when college baseballers can go pro? I know they have some sort of funny rule whereby they can’t just turn pro whwnever they want. I think (I’m hoping) that rule is more restrictive than college basketball where you get those “one and done” guys. I’d be very interested to know this because I gotta believe braddah Kolten Wong is ready for the next level. From the beginning of the year I could see that his talent level was way up there and today’s performance just cemented my opinion.

  105. Garret March 15, 2009 6:15 pm

    chawan_cut,

We went to Legoland today (we let the kids pick between any of the theme parks/zoos/museums) and had a great time of course. We saw the special Inauguration display they set up in Mini Land and I was so impressed! They had a ton of Lego people there (more than all the rest at Legoland combined I think) and set up the display to look exactly like how it looked on TV! Lori took photos and they will get posted eventually.

  106. Garret March 15, 2009 6:17 pm

    KapoleiWarrior,

College baseball players cannot turn pro after one year, so you’ll get to watch Kolten Wong for awhile longer at UH.

Players at four-year colleges are eligible after completing their junior years, or after their twenty-first birthdays. The exception to this is Division III schools, where players can be drafted before their junior year.

  107. Garret March 15, 2009 6:20 pm

In the US we are used to hearing about players having to deal with personal insults, heckling, etc. from the fans of the opposing team. However, in Iraq they take the term “hostile crowd” to a whole different level. This soccer player was trying to tie the game but one of the opposing fans literally stopped him.

An Iraqi football player has been shot dead by a spectator as he was about to score an equalising goal.

Ryanair (European airline) is actually considering charging passengers $1.40 to use the toilet! They point out that train and bus stations in Europe already charge passengers to use the toilet, which is a good argument…but I’d bet the first airlines that tried this in the US would get a strong backlash from the public.

Past studies of men found that there were some benefits for men who drank a glass of wine per day. Unfortunately, this study found that women who drink one small glass of wine a day are increasing their risk of developing certain forms of cancer by six per cent, with the risk doubling if they have a second drink.

    Good night everyone!

A-Joe – That wasn’t my first time bowling. I remember going to Country Lanes in Waipahu for 2 PE classes in intermediate school. We had to walk to the bowling alley! Then there was the bowling game at Fun Factory where you rolled the wood ball and hit the pins that was attached to some kind of metal bars. And then there is Wii bowling.

I was impressed with the scores everyone bowled! Was kinda dark in there. The music was good but loud. Had to talk at shouting level, causing me to lose some of my karaoke voice.

al – I was the only one with a black ball. My other ball was pink but someone took it.

  126. chawan_cut March 15, 2009 10:15 pm

    thanks lizk, d1.

  127. SteveM March 15, 2009 10:49 pm

Saw the news on the causal dining cutbacks. Peaches and I went to Hungry Lion late this afternoon. Triple M for me, Pastrami sandwich w/fries for her. Food has been up and down there but generally good. Certainly is convenient for us…and a place with Tsai-ko memories.

Next place will be chicken katsu and shrimp tempura, I think. Also, noticed a 10% coupon for Camellia II on King Street in the MidWeek…first time I’ve seen one.

homey — it’s OK to bring your own ball to bowling…a 15 pounder seems good, although you certainly have the strength for a 16.

Work day again tomorrow. Good night everyone.

(all though we did talk about it)

looks like the surprising ‘bows are the talk of the town what with a local boy the star player as well as the arrival of jason kramer and now harrison kuroda two more local kids doing well on the mound. throw in young easton torigoe who displayed that he belongs up there (what a quick bat he has).

i guess we were just waiting for the return of the bows, what with the “nothing to cheer for” basketball teams and men’s vb tanking recently, this is just what we needed.
