Blaze due back in late April

Word on the street is that Blaze Soares, who is recovering from an achilles’ injury, is projected to receive medical clearance in late April.
That will be too late for him to participate in spring ball, but enough time to prepare for the Aug. 3 start of training camp.

* * *

Newcomers are scheduled to report Aug. 1. The returning players must report by Aug. 2. And the first practice of training camp is Aug. 3.

* * *

It’s a pretty loud street. Apparently the latest word is that the Boise State-UH football game will be the last one on the WAC’s regular-season 2009schedule. The game will be televised nationally.

* * *

It’s always refreshing for a player to take the initiative to train on his own. Here’s offensive tackle Brent Leonard working out this morning:

* * *

Coach Mack has said Jeramy “J.B.” Bryant is the leading candidate to start at one of the corner positions. He also might compete as a nickelback.

13jb.JPG

* * *

Of the many contenders to start at left defensive end (John Fonoti has locked up the right side), Elliott Purcell is one of the most highly regarded.

What UH told recruits in January and February became official today: Mike Bellotti is stepping down as Oregon’s head coach to become the school’s athletic director.

  4. truegreen March 13, 2009 9:08 am

    Good news about Blaze. I’m sure Avery from Boise St. still remembers him well from their last trip to Aloha Stadium.

    Any news about whether UH will be able to avoid the dreaded 3 road games in a row?

  5. truegreen March 13, 2009 9:10 am

    Wow, so this is what it’s like to be top 5 again. You keep refreshing and a new pic keeps popping up each time. Ooh, wonder who’s next?

  6. Stephen Tsai March 13, 2009 9:10 am

    I heard a tentative WAC schedule is being circulated. Apparently UH will have several ESPN/ESPN2 appearances.

  7. Stephen Tsai March 13, 2009 9:12 am

    truegreen:
    I think UH will avoid the three-games-in-a-row scenario. But the Warriors might have to have a second back-to-back situation. We’ll see.

  8. Kekoa March 13, 2009 9:12 am

    Syracuse and Uconn going toe to toe right now on ESPN. Game before this one was a one pt squeaker with Vilanova beating Marquette at the buzzer to advance to the Big East semi’s.

  9. truegreen March 13, 2009 9:14 am

    Kekoa, are you sure that’s live? I bet you lunch it goes to 6 OT’s…

    w/ Uconn’s loss yesterday and espn’s continued love for uconn, unc and pitt to all get #1 seeds, does louisville get the last #1 seed if they win out in the big east tourney…

    a 2nd back to back road trip, hopefully idaho’s included somewhere in that one, would be tough to have to play 2 out of these 3 latech/nevada/sjsu in a back to back situation

    Tough two game outing for the Rainbow Wahine last night. I stopped by after work to catch the late start of the Cal Berkley game and Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu seemed to struggle all night on the “mound”, not to mention the numerous times Cal-Berkley was able to keep on stealing bases. It was just frustrating.

    Hopefully they can regroup and get back at it today and tomorrow.

  21. YpoWarrior March 13, 2009 9:54 am

    Seriously, I watched the barn burning ending paht…but wanted to see it from the start. In my excitement to get the replay note posted, I forgot to say that it was being featured and will go down as one of the all time great games of the playoffs.

    Not at all disappointed in the way both teams battled and kept it tied most of the 1st half. I thought Syracuse looked like the stronger team, but then the Conn men kept coming on strong! 12:00 min left in the half before the OT games begin!

  39. da princess' classmate March 13, 2009 10:18 am

    Just reading the article on the Softball Bows on the Hawaii Athletics site and I didn’t even realize Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu came in for relief for Sarah Robinson as I arrived after the second game started. I was wondering if and when she would start this year.

    Tough way to start her college career. But if family genes are any indication, the younger Robinson should be able to be a big part of this program’s success in the years to come. One doesn’t earn the accolade of top female athlete in her high school for nothing!

    Awesome win for the BaseBOWS last night. I couldn’t believe they dropped a 5 run lead after six innings. I thought Don Robbs was going to pass out after calling a game saving out by the Bows at the top of the 10th. Vinnie Catricala is going to be the man this year barring injury… and… HE’S GOT A YEAR LEFT TO GO!!! Well… there is the draft after this season… 👿

  76. Garret March 13, 2009 11:24 am

    I hope that Blaze doesn’t rush back from injury and that he’s fully healthy by the August training camp! Even more important, I hope that once he’s back he’s able to have an injury-free season…he adds an intimidation factor and experience to a fairly inexperienced LB group.

    Sometimes I think that Blaze can’t handle a full season of college football. At the moment, he’s more of a myth. Hope he can turn it around.

    Fair enough. What makes it so “painful” for fans is that the times he did play in 2007, he made a big difference enough for everyone to want more.

    Blaze Soares – da man, da myth, da tunda :mrgreen:

  130. Garret March 13, 2009 7:16 pm

    I hope that this doesn’t happen to any of the Warriors during Pro Day…I remember last year 3 of the 4 WRs had hamstring injuries, but at least this didn’t happen.

    Sad news out of Lubbock and Texas Tech yesterday. Former Tech OL Rylan Reed injured his knee while running the 40-yard dash Thursday in Lubbock at Tech’s Pro Day. Reed had to be carried off the field and transported by ambulance to a Lubbock hospital. That just tears at my heart.

    Reed, as you might remember, has overcome so much in his life. Reed’s minor league pitching career ended when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Reed, whose mother lives in Plano, beat cancer, and just a few days later, lost his father in a traggic car accident.

  131. Garret March 13, 2009 7:17 pm

    Another article about the injury during Texas Tech’s Pro Day.

    With most of his former teammates and coaches watching the drills – as well as representatives from 22 NFL teams – it was a difficult turn of events considering the amount of adversity Reed has fought throughout his life. His rough past includes a battle with cancer – which he won five years ago – the death of his father and a right broken ankle suffered in the 2008 Gator Bowl.

    The injury came moments after Reed – who was not invited to the NFL Combine in February despite being named a Walter Camp All-American and to several Big 12 Conference first teams – bench pressed 225 pounds 44 times. The showcase of strength was no surprise considering Reed set a Tech record by benching 625 pounds in July 2008.

  132. Garret March 13, 2009 7:20 pm

    The Reno paper had a little information about every WAC team before Spring Practice starts. Info on some of the teams is below.

    BOISE STATE (spring dates, March 9-April 17): The Broncos will likely only have five seniors in the fall … sophomore running back Doug Martin, considered the heir apparant when In Johnson left, is getting some looks as a safety … coach Chris Petersen recently juggled the coaching staff, moving RB coach Jeff Choate to LB coach and making three other moves.

    FRESNO STATE (March 23-April 26): The Bulldogs are no stranger to losing coaches, and they lost both coordinators after last season. OC Doug Nussmeier left for a similar position at Washington. Jeff Grady will be the new passing game coordinator and will call the plays on offense. Longtime DC Dan Brown retired. Hill named Randy Stewart the DC. There were a number of coaching changes at Fresno State.

    SAN JOSE STATE (spring dates N/A): Terry Malley, who for the last nine years was the OC for the Arena League’s San Jose SaberCats, was named the Spartans QB coach recently. He replaces Marcus Arroyo, now the OC at Wyoming. … SJSU won out over some Pac-10 and Mountain West schools for the services of RB Lamon Muldrow, a four-star recruit out of Roseville, Calif.

    Wow. You can almost hear the wind whistling through the broken windows, the creaking of the busted door on the saloon, and the rustle of the tumble-weeds as they blow through the deserted town.

    Where is everyone?

    The camera slowly pans and zooms to the end of the street. The blowing dust obscures the objects. A lonely tumble-weed blows across the street as the wind dies and the dust settles.

    Too late! The Pony qb has enough time only to catch a brief glimpse of very large and enraged green somethings and four distinct flashes of searing pain. Then blackness and the muffled sound of complete pandemonium until four of the Warriors slowly get up of his now badly bruised body.

    The Tsai-ko Card Section holds up the number 13 and slowly changes it to 14, the number of opposing qb’s crumpled by the Warrior “D”.

  136. Garret March 13, 2009 7:25 pm

    In this week’s WB show, Mac talked about how Maka had to wait forever to find out if he’d get another year via a medical redshirt and hoped that Libre wouldn’t have to wait that long. Texas submitted the info for WR Shipley even before the season ended and his extra year (2009) was granted before last season ended. They applied for that medical redshirt probably about 4-6 months before UH applied for Libre. Now, UCLA got *two* players the medical redshirt results already…it is my impression that for years UH never found out this early about a medical redshirt!

    The news was expected, but I thought I would pass it along anyway.

    UCLA received word tight end Logan Paulsen (foot) and linebacker Kyle Bosworth (knee) each received a medical red-shirt, meaning both will be eligible as fifth-year seniors in 2009.

    I don’t think that Bellotti stepping down at Oregon is a big shock to any of the 2009 recruits that they signed (like Wade). Back in December it was announced that Chip Kelly would be taking over for Bellotti some time in the near future, with Bellotti predicted to decide if he wanted to be AD in March.

    On January 2, Oregon let two assistant coaches go and Chip Kelly, not Bellotti, chose the replacement coaches. So, it was clear that Kelly was setting up his coaching staff. All this happened well before NLI day. One of the new assistants that Chip Kelly picked was Oregon’s new DL coach (Azzinaro)…who will now be Wade’s position coach.

  179. Committed Road Warrior March 14, 2009 8:04 am

    Morning everyone!

    Last night’s baseball game was rather interesting. Personally, LMU should have won that game but the less-than-stellar fielding from that SS and a wild pitch proved to be the difference. They pretty much handed us that game…..no way a team only musters two hits (one of them on a IMO blown call) and wins the game regardless of the number of BBs issued, but that’s just what happened to UH last night.

    We’ll see how the BaseBows do tonight!

  180. Committed Road Warrior March 14, 2009 8:05 am

    Did anyone read about what happened at the WAC Tournament last night?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3979903

    During a timeout with 7 seconds left and New Mexico State leading 70-69, Utah State’s mascot, “Big Blue” the bull, confronted New Mexico State’s “Pistol Pete” cowboy mascot and ripped off his fake mustache.

    The cowboy then chased the bull to halfcourt, jumped on his back and tried unsuccessfully to pull him to the floor.

    “Pistol Pete” then started to try to choke his rival before retreating to his end of the court.

    Several newspaper photographers covering the game said they heard a man in a Nevada shirt offer the Utah State mascot $100 to go grab the mustache.

    The man confirmed to The Associated Press that was true and that he paid the mascot the $100, but declined to provide his name. He said he did not expect New Mexico State’s “Pistol Pete” to respond the way he did.
