Tachibana arrested on DUI accusation

Backup linebacker Alema Tachibana was arrested this morning on suspicion of drunken driving.

He was released after posting $500 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in District Court on July 16.

The Warriors have posted a tentative roster. It’s tentative because it does not include the 2012 recruits and preferred walk-ons. There also is a so-called bullpen, which is a list of players who might be added to the roster.

The goal was to eliminate double numbers. There were more than 30 last year. This year, there are two. No. 8 Taylor Graham must redshirt this season after transferring from Ohio State. No. 21 Siaki Cravens is facing extensive rehabilitation after suffering a severe shoulder injury in spring training.

Also, two numbers that were not issued the past four years — Nos. 14 and 15 — will be used this year. They will be taken out of circulation again if school officials ever decide they should be retired. Tommy Kaulukukui’s No. 32 is the only jersey number officially retired by the Warriors.

The UH coaches did a good job at yesterday’s free clinic at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. About 130 kids had signed up, including an 8-year-old who dyed his long hair green.

Yo! Don’t’ forget the tight ends.

  4. truegreen June 16, 2012 2:37 am

What do Cayman Shutter and I have in common? We’re both #15, but probably not for long…

  5. truegreen June 16, 2012 2:37 am

darn! spam beat me to that one too

  6. wafan June 16, 2012 2:43 am

Top 5 once everyone wakes up to have spam for breakfast.

  8. wafan June 16, 2012 2:53 am

Thanks for the roster and numbers Mr. Tsai!

  9. Kekoa June 16, 2012 3:14 am

    Wafan ~

    You ordered SPAM…You got SPAM!

Now try go stand in line for your Ka Lei eggs, and Sweet Bread toast.

ST must’ve left his SPAM security at Hickam AFB. (Please note that I give the Air Force respect for their base). Like another branch of our mighty military is their private air taxi stand. How rude.

Talk to your peeps SailorBlue…remind them we’re under the same flag. Hickam never should have been renamed “Pearl Harbor Joint Anything!”

    Revisionists…pftttt!

  10. Kekoa June 16, 2012 3:16 am

Blog has a little color to it this morning…hehehe.

  11. wafan June 16, 2012 3:18 am

    Hi Kekoa!

Hope everyone is doing well at home. Greetings to the Queen Mother and Little Princess.

  12. wafan June 16, 2012 3:20 am

Hmmmmmm. I think I made a bunch of spam.

    What the heck happened?

  13. wafan June 16, 2012 3:21 am

    Tsai-kettes!

    Reminder for tomorrow . . . Father’s Day.

  14. mo808 June 16, 2012 3:32 am

What the heck Wafan? You da SpamMan?

Good Morning! My eyes wen pop wen I saw 44 posts already, das sum crazy spam-mania today!

Thanks ST for the roster! Go Warriors!

    Have a wonderful weekend folks!

  15. Shoko June 16, 2012 4:22 am

Why is it Wafan is the only one that has an issue with multiple post. Perhaps its a phonetic tic, or in this case a typo tic?

    Anyway, morning all!

Yahoo’s Mike Huguenin has Hawaii ranked 110 and UNLV at 108? How you figga?

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf–preseason-1-124-countdown–nos–106-110.html;_ylt=AgtoRrWU.XCtOOKUA64XglYcvrYF

I know these predictions don’t mean much, but its something to ponder until the season starts.

  16. wafan June 16, 2012 4:57 am

Good turn out at yesterday’s camp. Making more Warriors and fans!

  17. PowderPuff June 16, 2012 5:02 am

Good Father’s Day Eve! Soooo excited for “Moving Day,” the TV’s been on the Golf Channel all night. C’mon Tiger!

Nice list/roster, ST. Less than 3 months ’til the home opener!

  18. d1shima June 16, 2012 5:35 am

    Great Morning All!

    Looks like a numbers game….

  19. A-joe June 16, 2012 5:48 am

Even producers of the Twilight Zone are a little perplexed by today’s postings.

    Gmorning Gang!

Right off the bat I’d like to ask all of you a big favor. Can everyone either copy or memorize the roster above? Get yourselves familiarized with each player and coach. This will be an incredible and historic year that we’ll be referring to for decades to come.

    Mahalo Gang!!

  20. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 5:49 am

Thanks, Clyde, I did forget to type in the tight ends.

Also, it looks like Donnie King must be a “bullpen” guy who got activated because he doesn’t have a number.

  21. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 5:50 am

Somebody once suggested that it would be good to retire the number “07,” which would honor the 2007 team without taking a number out of circulation.

  22. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 5:52 am

    Whooo-hhoooooooooo. I ranked! Top 25! Gooood morning!

  23. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 5:54 am

    The roster is at 76.

UH plans to have a roster of about 102 at camp, which means 26 will be added.

The NCAA allows up to 105 at training camp, so UH has the flexibility to add players. But the plan is to keep a tight roster, which means expect everyone ready to compete as freshmen and many starters playing special teams.

  24. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 5:56 am

    papapjoe2

You came thisclose to barely making the top 60 before adjusting for the spam and wafan’s post duplicating itself 12 times.

  25. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:01 am

I count 16 seniors on scholarship (two are on the medical retirement list).

  26. lava June 16, 2012 6:03 am

Vele at FB? Really? Me thinks whoever is judging the lb talent needs a refresher course.

  27. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:10 am

Vele was at fullback the final week of spring ball and looked really good there. He’s actually the No. 1 fullback. Now Ethan Watanabe probably will compete there in training camp. If Watanabe does well, that gives Vele the option of going back to linebacker.

  28. wafan June 16, 2012 6:11 am

    Good morning, again.

Thanks for zapping the spam and my multiple posts of the same comment.

  29. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:11 am

Lister and Iosefa also can play fullback in a split-back formation.

  30. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:12 am

    wafan:

I’m glad you were able to make it back. It was easier to spam-delete your comments than to actually delete them, so I was hoping you wouldn’t be labeled as a spammer.

  31. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:13 am

Had a great day at George Gusman’s St. Louis Baseball Memorial Golf Scholarship Tournament honoring the late Francis Funai and Mel Seki. Teamed up with brothers Sonny and former UH Warrior great Rodney Villanueva along with John Harris, Ron Lee and Elroy Chong. Kama Krab came by to help out after he was pau work. I hope they made a lot of money. Sooo many prizes. One guy used up all his raffle tickets winning prizes. Mahalo “Gus” for a great tournament.

  32. wafan June 16, 2012 6:14 am

Dunno about the number 7 for the 2007 team. But it would fit with Colt’s request to honor the entire unit rather than a personal accolade for himself.

  33. Pomai June 16, 2012 6:14 am

For those who would like to print out the roster go here:

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/documents/2011/3/9/roster.pdf

  34. wafan June 16, 2012 6:16 am

I guess your magic is powerful, Mr. Tsai, with the zapper and all.

  35. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:20 am

If you go to the UH Web site and use that roster, ignore all of the heights/weights. They haven’t been updated in a long, long time.

Same as some of the positions. Kamalani Alo hasn’t been a safety for a while.

  36. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:20 am

ST does “labeled spammers” automatically get deleted? Must be a million of them.

  37. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:21 am

Your namm??? I tot was my namm.

  38. Kekoa June 16, 2012 6:21 am

    A-joe ~

If my memory of the numbering system is correct, I’m good from 1-105. Adding names to those numbers, not so good.

My plan is to hire a spotter. Btw, Is A-Sports crafting stuff? I was going axe her be my spotter if she not busy.

  39. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:22 am

ST, please zapp my #37. No make sense now.

  40. d1shima June 16, 2012 6:22 am

The two lead stories on the Sports page this morning make me also feel that I am so ready for fall camp to get started! 🙁

  41. wafan June 16, 2012 6:23 am

No pic of the kid with the long green hair?

And, that name (JBPHH) just does not quite roll off the tongue.

  42. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:23 am

Kekoa, I stopped the numbering part at 2. Public skuul ting.

  43. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 6:24 am

Brother Mike: I’ll tell my uncle Harold Chang you had him for economics. He might remember you, though if you cut class a lot, he might not. Do you remember him coaching football at Kalani?

  44. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:25 am

    papa:

There’s a place I can go to where it lists all of the posted comments. It gives me the option of hitting “unapproved,” “spam,” “edit” or “delete.”

If I hit “delete,” it takes away the comment, but redirects me from the list. So then I have to go hunt down the list again. If I hit “unapproved,” sometimes the site will decide to “approve” the comment later. So it’s easier to just mark stuff “spam” because then it erases immediately without kicking me off the list.

By the way, I don’t visit other blog sites because the last time I did, that’s how we ended up with AMPP (annoying multiple personality person). It was like visiting a place without shots and contracting a virus.

  45. wafan June 16, 2012 6:29 am

You should always use protection when visiting other places.

  46. wafan June 16, 2012 6:30 am

Zapping posts sounds complicated. The folks who designed the system must like button clicks. The folks who designed our grading system put in a click for everything we have to do. So annoying and time consuming.

  47. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:31 am

Our military writer, William Cole, said that, yes, the official name is Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

It made it tough yesterday when I couldn’t decide whether to go right (Pearl Harbor) or left (Hickam).

  48. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:33 am

We used to get a lot more attention in the spam area.

But I think the techs have moved on to monitoring The Pulse.

  49. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:34 am

The Pulse has its own car, detailed with the logo.

If the Warrior Beat ever had a car budget, I’m sure it would be appropriate to make it a lunch wagon.

  50. d1shima June 16, 2012 6:35 am

  51. wafan June 16, 2012 6:35 am

A big lunch wagon with lots of gravy over everything!

    Mmmmmmmmmmm.

  52. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:37 am

    So, back to the numbers.

Last year, it was tough choosing whether to award No. 2 to Mike Edwards or Allen Sampson. Both had compelling and heart-felt reasons to want that number. So McMackin let both have it, which meant both could not be on the same special-team unit.

    I think it’s a great solution to give Edwards No. 1. That’s a statement-making number.

  53. Slugger June 16, 2012 6:39 am

    Good morning, gang!

ST ~ Thanks for the roster! I miss seeing the guys at practices. Had to put some pictures on my PC @work to make it interesting…Colt, Alex Green, Mike Edwards, Pollard, the funny QB-WR crew at the Wahine clinic. Hope Coach Chow holds the Wahine Clinic this year.

    Laters…

  54. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:41 am

Bigger disappointment — Belmont or Wallenda over Niagra?

  55. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:42 am

#31, In case anybody tried to look up Rodney as a former Warrior, nnooooo he didn’t play football for the Warriors, but did graduate from UH. Everybody knows him as a commedian so that’s my joke to him. He was hilarious as the mc at the golf tournament.

  56. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:42 am

    Slugger:

Chow wants to put on the women’s clinic.

But he would be the lead instructor, not his wife.

  57. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 6:45 am

An 11 year old won the women’s longest drive contest at St. Louis baseball golf tournament. Shucks, I didn’t get her name. I think her first name was Nicole. Could be a future LPGA player from Hawaii.

  58. Slugger June 16, 2012 6:46 am

Fine with me that Coach Chow is the lead instructor at the Wahine Clinic. We need to get to know him. Learned a bunch (for me, anyway) at the clinics with the coaches. Great way to build support for the team. Gonna miss Mouse Davis…entertaining guy.

Bet my hula sister makes lei for Coach Chow for each game.

  59. Steve Paschal June 16, 2012 6:48 am

ST, thanks for all the heads up stuff on the Football Warriors. After tracking all that Coach Chow has said, with more info coming in about this years recruits, the first year guys along with the JuCo transfers—I’m convinced more than ever that the soothsayers predicting a dismal year for UH are sticking their collective necks out.

All this nonsense that the football talent isn’t up to par, that we don’t have QB’s that have stepped up–therefore are slated to be at the bottom, is really just so much grist for the mill. Chow knows his only real hill to climb is getting everyone on the same page and playing their guts out on saturdays! He does that!– he’ll have a team that just might scare the hell out of somebody.

  60. kapakahi June 16, 2012 6:52 am

JMHO but kinda surprised not to see S Dante Johnson (#40 during the Spring) on the roster.

Unlike OL position, must be overloaded at safety since quite a few (Adebayo, Bridgford, Gomes, Leslie) also not listed.

  61. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 6:53 am

I went to the women’s football clinic only once and that was the 1st one by Heather McMackin. I enjoyed it a lot, mainly because she made it so personal — ie, showed us a map of where she had to make a home every time her husband got hired someplace else. There were times when she didn’t bother to unpack boxes, because off they were again.

  62. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:54 am

    The bullpen is very deep.

  63. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 6:55 am

ST: why no zeroes assigned? Nothing wrong with being a cypher.

  64. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 6:58 am

    Slugger:

People are going to like Chow.

    He’s feisty.

    And he’s very competitive.

He’s also a really good public speaker. He did well at yesterday’s clinic, relating to both the kids and their parents.

  65. kapakahi June 16, 2012 6:59 am

Lack of numbers at TE position must be a factor ‘cuz JMHO that kinda surprised to see scholie JC transfer Evans on this list…..after a very “ho hum” showing this past Spring ball.

Even Woodard (who switched back to DE) and Lolotai (who switched back to OL, but might now be leaving the team) got more reps than Evans this past Spring.

  66. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:01 am

Evans has to work on his stamina. He appeared to tire in the second half of practices last year. He’s young. He’ll get his wind.

Harold Moleni comes in to compete at tight end.

  67. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2012 7:02 am

    Good Morning Gangeez :)!

Spam patrol looks like a lot of work, Stephen. Thanks for makin’ da spam scram. I peeked in at about 2A.M. and dey was already outnumbering the early posters.

Thanks for the list, too. I’m thinkin’ all those numbers will add up to a great season like A-joe sez!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  68. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:07 am

Any OL left in the bullpen?

  69. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:10 am

There will be some newcomers on the o-line.

  70. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:12 am

Looks like bullpen will consist mainly of DBs.

  71. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2012 7:12 am

Sorry to read about Ayers. Prayers and condolences to his ohana.

  72. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:14 am

Any update on Tavita’s twin brother Tana?

  73. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:15 am

He’s still trying to get admitted.

  74. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:16 am

Thanks! Anything on Dorsey and/or Myles?

  75. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:17 am

Inspired by Hoarders, I took pictures of the messy parts of my house. Now to throw away stuff.

  76. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:18 am

Dorsey has to take care of business this summer.

Myles is a very, very long shot.

  77. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:22 am

Good to see RB #28 Sterling Jackson and FB #35 Jared Leaf both on the list.

  78. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:25 am

Jackson missed all of the spring because of the surgery. At the end of spring, he said he should be ready for training camp.

Leaf had that strange illness where he lost a lot of weight. I think he should be OK.

Doubt Elisara will be ready for a while. Was told he suffered more than one tear to his knee in that Maui scrimmage.

  79. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:27 am

Chow isn’t a square-peg/round-hole guy. (Or is it round peg, square hole. I can never get it straight.)

Anyway, he won’t force it. If there’s inadequate play at fullback, he won’t use one. He has a lot of different strategies.

  80. Derek June 16, 2012 7:27 am

Is it just me, but the running back position looks thin. Lakalaka will get an opportunity to play right away. Injuries is the big question that can decimate a team’s depth at certain positions.

  81. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:28 am

Hoping that DE Lasi Eselu (#95 who displayed good potential during the Spring) will also be in the bullpen too.

  82. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:30 am

There won’t just be one or two guys getting all the carries. They’ll play all of the running backs, including Lakalaka. And if they get into a jam, they always can move Anguay or Amadi back there.

  83. d1shima June 16, 2012 7:30 am

    Condolences to the Ayers Ohana

  84. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 7:31 am

Nope. As of now, Eselu isn’t eligible.

  85. d1shima June 16, 2012 7:32 am

Maybe Miano shoulda taken the #14 and #15 jerseys with him.

  86. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:32 am

    #80,

Also hoping that RB Josh Gonda (#22 during the Spring) is in the bullpen too.

  87. d1shima June 16, 2012 7:34 am

    re: Edwards/Sampson solution last season…. 🙄

  88. d1shima June 16, 2012 7:36 am

Is Tuiasosopo (OL) or Umebayashi (LB/LS) in the bullpen?

  89. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:36 am

Thanks for confirming. Kinda heard that about Lasi.

Hoping that younger bro DE Nainoa might eventually walk-on.

  90. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:40 am

    #80,

Maybe that’s why Chow is actively recruiting Wily & Taumua for Class of 2013 signing class.

  91. papajoe2 June 16, 2012 7:40 am

    Condolences to the Ayers family.

  92. d1shima June 16, 2012 7:44 am

…or maybe it’s just that players like that are good to have aboard?

  93. kapakahi June 16, 2012 7:46 am

    ST,

Any chance that #53 could still “unretire”?

  94. tommui June 16, 2012 7:46 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!!

Thanks for the list – the anticipation mounts!

  95. tom-warriornation June 16, 2012 7:59 am

anyone need tix for the San Diego St. road game on Oct. 6; I need 20+ for da group rate; looks like they have great seats near midfield upper deck; just like we had last year at UW. email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

    http://goaztecs.cstv.com/tickets/sdsu-tickets-detail.html#group

  96. lava June 16, 2012 8:14 am

I get that Vele can contribute at fb, but I feel he has the greatest upside at outside lb of anyone on the team, and I have to think the outside lb position is more critical to the success of this team than fb, which, as you indicate, will be scrapped altogether in the absence of the right player.

Hopefully we beat USC by 20 and I’ll agree to defer to the coaches on all things football.

  97. WarriorNY June 16, 2012 8:15 am

Ok…#15 needs to be retired… Or we do should do something similar to what Michigan does with the number 21. That #21 jersey has a patch that says Desmond Howard and his years played… The number is given to a player by coaches to honor Desmond Howard and also award the student who deserves to wear the “legend” jersey…

  98. jm2375 June 16, 2012 8:19 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Wow plenny posts for a Saturday morning, already.

papajoe2 – #31 – the late, great Francis Funai was my great-uncle. He was an amazing man, full of energy. An avid golfer, he was shooting his age when he was in his 80’s. Hopefully, there are young baseball players out there who are still benefiting from the knowledge he imparted on previous generations of players and coaches.

    Is it football season yet?

    Vele…no fear…will be a beast at FB.

  101. Na Koa Mike June 16, 2012 8:44 am

The Aloha Beer Company fundraising event for Na Koa which was to have been held on Friday June 22nd has been postponed until further notice.

  102. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 8:46 am

I like the idea UH is forced to make a decision on numbers. If people are deserving, it should be a school act. CB certainly made enough money for UH.

  103. d1shima June 16, 2012 8:50 am

Is there a list of retired numbers for the entire UHAD?

Tats and Les in baseball are the only other ones I can recall

  104. d1shima June 16, 2012 8:51 am

    No problem Na Koa Mike,

I used my SWAM gift card last night and stocked up on beer already

  105. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 8:54 am

I’m not sure how they retire numbers. It was a nice gesture to hold out numbers, but if it’s not official, what’s the point?

  106. d1shima June 16, 2012 8:56 am

…and what happens when the holder leaves!

  107. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 8:57 am

Exactly. Few knew the numbers were withheld because there were no plaques.

  108. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 8:59 am

Pops Leahey suggested Miano should hire Lobendahn. End of controversy.

  109. Derek June 16, 2012 9:07 am

Too bad Shoji doesn’t have a Number! His number would be retired too. Looks like Shoji’s 3 division I transfers are promising. In particular, I like Longo from Penn State and Kastl from Arizona State. Somehow, we need a 6’5″ to 6’6″ middle blocker. but 6’4″ isn’t too shabby. Too bad Hewitt called it a career. She was a proven blocker.

  110. el burro sabio June 16, 2012 9:12 am

Jordan Monico is not on the roster. You gotta be kidding…

  111. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 9:20 am

    Bullpen.

  112. el burro sabio June 16, 2012 9:27 am

I still think someone is kidding 😉

  113. graham June 16, 2012 9:34 am

Can u post who is in the bullpen

  114. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2012 9:42 am

    Stephen #108 –

    Good call by Pops.

  115. d1shima June 16, 2012 9:47 am

    Stephen/DPK,

No tink so. Birdies tell me the guy who was replaced was instilling a new ethic and mindset. That needs to come from the HC. Like I said, it will be interesting to see who continues or doesn’t continue as the S & C dude up Lunalilo Home Road.

  116. LizKauai (iPad) June 16, 2012 10:08 am

    Yawn. F’d til 5am. 3 akule in 12 hours.

Woke up to the sound of planes and helos… ???

  117. LizKauai (iPad) June 16, 2012 10:10 am

Heavenly consolation to the Ayers Ohana.

  118. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 10:18 am

Hi Liz! If you fished for 12 hours, that’s a good sign. No flu now, huh?

  119. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 10:20 am

An hour or so ago, my neighbor was cooking fish. Definitely not pleasant, odorwise.

When I cook fish, it’s always salmon with teri sauce and green onions, baked for 20 mins in a 375 degree oven.

  120. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 10:22 am

Interesting that Miano is going to donate his Kaiser salary to his staff. How does he manage to survive, though? Hawaii is expensive.

  121. d1shima June 16, 2012 10:50 am

  122. LizKauai (iPad) June 16, 2012 10:51 am

Gigi – i replaced the F for flu with F for fishing.. 🙂

  123. LizKauai (iPad) June 16, 2012 10:52 am

    Go Tiger!

  124. LK June 16, 2012 10:52 am

Yesterday, there was a question about when Curtis Murayama was the HS beat writer with the HA. You can ask him in person tomorrow at the Kahala Chevron, I believe he’ll be at our club basketball team’s carwash. It’ll be a good opportunity for moms and kids to get dad’s car washed for him on Father’s Day.

  125. LK June 16, 2012 10:54 am

I remember at one of our car washes last year, Coach Mac made a very generous donation in addition to getting his car washed. Wonder if Coach Chow will stop by this year. 😉

  126. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2012 10:55 am

Is Tiger leading? I should watch.

  127. 4UHFAN June 16, 2012 12:05 pm

    Aloha, RIP Billy Ayers

  128. wafan June 16, 2012 1:05 pm

    Condolences to the Ayers family.

  129. kapakahi June 16, 2012 1:26 pm

    #108,

Just don’t think that will go over real well with Principal Sosa and/or AD Iwasaki.

  130. kapakahi June 16, 2012 1:33 pm

    #66,

That could be said about alot of the players….especially on offense.

JMHO but better to let Tommy have full control of running the conditioning program this off-season…..instead of by committee.

  131. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2012 1:34 pm

    kapakahi/d1 –

I stand, er, sit corrected re: 108. You guys have da birdies, I only know what I read here. Much more to the story, it looks like. Thanks for the info. Had no idea this might affect the S & C guy too. Hope everything works out.

  132. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2012 1:47 pm

    Breaking news not good…

  133. Ipu Man June 16, 2012 1:54 pm

God bless Billy Ayers. Couldn’t find any football video of him but did find this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mogUKR6zbrU

It is dated May 12 and he looks pretty good for a man in his sixties.

  134. Ipu Man June 16, 2012 2:11 pm

DPK, I searched Yahoo News and CNN and KITV but did not see anything

out of the ordinary. Do you mean Lindsy Lohan sleeping/death misreport?

  135. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2012 2:12 pm

    What an idiot

  136. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2012 2:13 pm

Did he not learn from Shutter…(O_o)

  137. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2012 2:14 pm

Alema Tachibana arrested on suspicion of DUI.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/159319815.html?id=159319815

  138. Ipu Man June 16, 2012 2:18 pm

Guess you have to be non-drinking sports person nowadays at UH…

unheard of in my day…I remember a gymnast who drank a beer at

lunch every day to calm his nerves at practice…he was pretty good!

  139. Shoko June 16, 2012 2:20 pm

    Yikes! Another DUI?

  140. Ipu Man June 16, 2012 2:34 pm

44 Alema Tachibana… might want to change his jersey number.

44 is an unlucky number in Japanese as 4 is the same word for death.

44 Dustin Elisara, full back, also.

Now who else UH got to replace Tachi at outside linebacker?

  141. Kapahulu June 16, 2012 2:39 pm

I expect Chow to lower the Boom on this DUI charge. I guess some on the team didn’t learn from others mistakes. The penalty will probably be severe enough to make sure this will not happen again. Unfortunately this now will effect the UH Football teams image on the opener against USC on National TV.

Not the type of publicity UH wants or needs around the country! Once can be forgiven, twice will be a lot harder.

  142. Ipu Man June 16, 2012 2:43 pm

Christianity also has an example of Four as bad news…

with the last of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

    being death.

    🙄

  143. Shoko June 16, 2012 2:43 pm

Would Chow dish out a harsher punishment with Tachibana for the same offense as Shutter? Hardly seems fair if Chow gave Tachi more than a four-day suspension.

  144. Ipu Man June 16, 2012 2:45 pm

Alrighty then…to lighten things up here is a vid for Portugese Pride

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXw5fMIYGqg

    😆

  145. Shoko June 16, 2012 2:46 pm

Might have to make an example of the example. Pretty sad…

  146. Shoko June 16, 2012 2:47 pm

Sor of like bad things happens in three’s? Will there be another DUI? Hope not.

  147. ALLAN June 16, 2012 2:52 pm

LINEBACKER JUST GAVE UH FB PROGRAM THE FINGER, SLAPPED THE HC IN THE FACE; NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER.

  148. d1shima June 16, 2012 2:53 pm

    Good grief!

  149. madeinhawaii June 16, 2012 2:58 pm

I take it that that linebacker was the same one that just recently got arrested for a DUI ? http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/159319815.html?id=159319815

  150. madeinhawaii June 16, 2012 2:59 pm

After the Shutter incident, if it is the same LB, I think the penalty is going to be even stiffer. If that linebacker had a scholie, he may be stripped of it or off the team completely.

  151. Shoko June 16, 2012 3:01 pm

If this is his second DUI then it should be a dismissal from the team.

  152. Wes'side Warrior June 16, 2012 3:11 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

First off, mahalo, ST, for the list. Looks like it will change a bazillion times before we get to the start of the season. Wondering what our bullpen looks like.

Anyways, for those wondering… the Georgia Force are trailing the Chicago Rush. You can watch live online: http://www.ustream.tv/GeorgiaForce

  153. Kapahulu June 16, 2012 3:11 pm

    From the Dallas Morning News:

How long will June Jones be at SMU? Normally, a coach that has produced the sort of results Jones has wouldn’t be wondering about his future. But two things happened this off-season that could cast something of a shadow on Jones’ outlook. First, his flirtation with Arizona State (that only ended because ASU boosters didn’t like Jones) showed that Jones might have the itch to coach in major conference football for the first time and couldn’t have endeared him to his bosses on the Hilltop. Then, Steve Orsini, the man who brought Jones to Dallas, was axed himself. Just how Jones will jibe with whoever the new AD is remains to be seen, but with three years left on his deal, he figures to get at least a year or two to prove his worth. It’s just a question of whether Jones is the man who will lead the Ponies for the next 10 years, or if he’s closer to being on his way out (either by his own choice or otherwise) than his way in.

  154. Wes'side Warrior June 16, 2012 3:13 pm

Just got on to check out the game, so I don’t know if any of our boyz are playing. Logged on during their halftime, and they had younger kids playing AFL-style football. Pretty sure Bryant Moniz isn’t playing. Not sure about Richard Torres.

Should be able to check out this site later, as these games are saved to be watched at your leisure.

  155. lava June 16, 2012 4:05 pm

Yes Gigi, Tiger is leading. So is Wie.

    Tachibana more puzzling that Gigi.

  156. wafan June 16, 2012 4:15 pm

    Good grief, Tachibana.

    No learn from others?

Hoping this one will not hurt a lot.

  163. Bulla June 16, 2012 4:59 pm

    well my tsiako ohana,

not to sound like a broken record, but our Warrior is innocent until proven guilty, so let’s not be the proverbial judge and jury here in this blog, but continue to hope for the best for him and his family.

on a brighter note, wow, 1st game of the season for the ballers on National TV…..whooo hooo, what a chance to show the country what we have. what a motivator for the boys during the summer training session…

    GO WARRIORS

    GO WILDCATS

  164. tommui June 16, 2012 5:04 pm

I don’t know where the idea of Mr. Tachibana is a second DUI offender – anybody got something on that?

No question that he will probably get wacked more than Cayman Shutter even though it may be his first offense. It becomes a matter of informing the team that this sort of conduct cannot continue.

If it is a second offense, I would imagine he would be shown the door.

  165. d1shima June 16, 2012 5:10 pm

  166. Stretch June 16, 2012 5:14 pm

D1, really? How do you do that?

  168. madeinhawaii June 16, 2012 5:29 pm

Shutter was held out of the spring training camp… so I guess Tachibana would be held out of Fall camp. No fall training camp kind of automatically relegates him to the scout team. Add to that a number of weeks of suspension… I think he’s pretty much out of the line up for next season.

  169. madeinhawaii June 16, 2012 5:30 pm

Sorry, in terms of DUI, you are guilty — until you (or a good lawyer) can prove you innocent. Case in point — how many DUI offenders have we seen beat or get off of their charges? Answer: Not many. No need to be a legal scholar, judge, or god to see this. One of the few ways to get out of a DUI is to prove that the police stopped you illegally. This is virtually impossible.

Alema could thank the good gods if just so happen the police did not do a breathalyzer test on him. But that is almost never the case. Blowing on the tube goes hand in hand with the field sobriety test. Pretty standard protocol when officers make these stops. And a breathalyzer reading over the limit is pretty hard to dispute.

    BIK

  200. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2012 9:11 pm

I was surprised Tachibana wasn’t listed as having played in a game last year. He was on a couple of road trips.

  201. kapakahi June 16, 2012 9:21 pm

    #208,

My attorney friends always advise to NEVER agree to take the field sobriety test….’cuz just too subjective and discretionary. HPD apparently cannot force a person to take the field sobriety test. Field breathalyzer test is unofficial. Official breathalyzer test is taken at the station….which buys more time if alchohol level is borderline.

Once he gets his life in order, then he can figure out what role football has in his life. Until then, this guy needs some help, and I hope UH will help him find it.

  219. BigHiloFan2 June 17, 2012 7:00 am

    DUI.

lots of comments about the recent charge against Mr. Tachibana.

from my own experiences this year along, 5, and based on intuition and a very limited knowledge of the “facts”, I gotta say TOMMUI and LAVA hit da nail on da top.

gotta wait and watch da game. but the first first first first thing Mr. Tachibana gotta do,

is at least write ADLRO and ask for a copy of their complete file, so he knows what he’s facing at ADLRO. and he’ll know what he’s facing at district court.

my gut tells me this case is different than Shutter. State v. Nesmith.

so even though I know we gotta back up Coach Chow, and I back up Coach 100%, and I agree with a initial perception from ALLAN that it appears brudda gave da coach da finger,

I also agree with Lava, gotta give brudda da benefit of da doubt.

like I said, 5 experiences this year alone tell me us humans gotta give chance to da kinda good guys who will face up to mistakes.

final word to Tachibana. go talk to a lawyer before talking to Coach Chow. i would proceed under da guise of “coach, gotta check on my legal rights first, cuz all is not as it seems.”

    look Coach in da eye.

wishful thinking from a diehard UH fan.

    ok, off da box.

  220. Old School Dave June 17, 2012 7:06 am

If these players have a substance abuse problem, they should receive professional help, rather than simply throwing them off of the team. There are more important things than playing ball and they still have a whole life ahead of them. I’m sure Coach Chow will do the right thing to help these players.

  221. BigHiloFan2 June 17, 2012 7:08 am

the Nesmith April 2012 Sup Ct decision.

    just guessing:

a 5 am stop is way past bar closing time.

location of the stop suggests coming from somebody’s home.

the stop likely was based on a claim of observation.

most likely, intuition by the officer.

    just guessing:

this is the kind of case likely can result in good result

    for a good guy.

so, on the side of the young man, get chance.

on the side of the team, the charge and cases (ADLRO and Dist Ct) takes away from focus on the team. plus even resolutions gonna take time. not good.

but before jumping to conclusions, gotta know who the arresting officer is,

gotta know who you’re gonna scrap.

my gut tells me, Tachibana can do with a top D1 defense attorney.

public defenders, while some are very good, won’t be able to help with

ADLRO and won’t be able to get the records from ADLRO because they don’t

do ADLRO, and Mr. Tachibana needs to get the ADLRO records right away,

    not next week, right away.

again, my current opinions are based on intuition, not facts.

    good luck Mr. Tachibana.

    I believe in Dr. Chow.

Shutter and Tachibana have given him the ammo to make this team his team.

i can feel it in my bones. DUI is the worst kind of charge. but i’m saying

Tachibana can make a deal deal, convert the charge into a more manageable charge,

say Reckless Driving with a deferred acceptance component, so his record can be cleaned up and the insurance impact and long term impact minimized.

but Bubbatita’s comments worries me. Are things really like that?????
