Base ball

The Warriors are close to completing a deal in which they would conduct the second half of their training camp at Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam. The deal is awaiting approval on some aspects, such as insurance.

The Warriors would stay on the base (two to a room), use the practice and training facilities, and eat at the cafeteria.

The Warriors will be staying in the dormitories through Summer Session II. But they have to vacate after that because the school needs a week to clean and prepare the dorms for the start of the fall semester.

Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson yesterday made a one-day trip from Maui to Honolulu to check on his academic status for the fall semester. Robinson, a Baldwin High graduate, is transferring from Washington State. He is awaiting official word, but he appears to have met the requirements to enroll at UH-Manoa. Once he receives an acceptance letter, he will petition the NCAA for an exemption that would allow him to play for the Warriors in 2012. He said his case would be based on a “family situation” that required him to move back to Hawaii. Pu‘u-Robinson is a defensive end/outside linebacker.

It takes UH longer than a day to find your records. How did he do that in one day?

In regards to that USC story yesterday, some people posted comments that included words that, as you can imagine, were on the spam list. Our system is not Siri. It screens words, not context. So sorry if the comments didn’t go through.

  12. tommui May 31, 2012 6:52 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Top whatever!

    Best of luck Jordan!

Now, if the UH can find records within a day – unusual, to be sure – maybe this is a good omen in the future. How many possible admissions/transfers in the past may have been lost because of fumbling around with transcripts etc?

  13. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2012 6:52 am

Hey, we have video ads on the blog now.

  15. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2012 6:53 am

UH has been doing a good job of getting players approved quickly.

  16. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 6:59 am

I read somewhere that two Warriors per room isn’t such a hot idea, especially if one of them snores.

  17. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 7:01 am

and I wonder how the hotels accommodate 7 foot tall basketball players. Hubby grumbles if he has to sleep on a double bed and insists on a king size one.

A king size bed would be like a double bed for some BB players.

  18. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 7:02 am

SteveM: how big are the beds on cruise lines?

  19. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2012 7:04 am

Mahalo for the years of solid work Daniel Arakaki. The job is intense and your efforts went a long way in keeping the Warriors in the games/meets.

Swimmers, even ex-UH Letterwinner swimmers, need to get back into the water at some point.

Best wishes in the new position!!

#17 that’s why they invented ear plugs.

  27. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:07 am

    PPJ2: How tall are you?

  28. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:10 am

    I am 5’1″ tall.

    Hubby is 6’1″.

We both prefer to sleep on our backs.

So we require a king size bed.

  29. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:11 am

ST: There’s no ad on the blog that I can see. What are you talking about?

  30. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 8:13 am

I used to be 5’9″ but don’t know now.

They put 2 beds together if you want to sleep together or 2 seperate single beds divided by a night stand. You have to let them know before. If not, don’t worry, they can change it in an instant.

  31. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:17 am

2 separate beds would be okay with me, but I think hubby would require an extra long twin bed because he wouldn’t want his feet to stick out.

  32. Kevin May 31, 2012 8:20 am

Siri can’t even turn on my flashlight app…

  33. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:22 am

  34. Don Weir (We-Ah) May 31, 2012 8:23 am

In 1973 UH Football team traveled to Japan.

Everyone’s feet hung at least 1.0 to 1.5 feet over the end of the bed (except for Yasuo Yorita’s). I think Paul Lee set the record for extension past the end of the bed.

  35. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:25 am

Don: we spent 3 nights in Tokyo in 2008.

Requested a king size bed. Their version of a king is more like a queen or almost a double. We had to sleep 69.

  36. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 8:26 am

Just noticed on the SA breaking news that a U.S. Senate candidate wants the federals to check birth certificates. Isn’t Mazie born in Japan? I hope no trouble there.

  39. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:30 am

hubby is really concerned about the bed size in the cabin. That could be a deal-killer.

  40. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:31 am

When we toured the Mighty Mo a couple of years ago, we noticed how small the beds were for the officers.

  41. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 8:34 am

I wonder how the new minor league football would take shape? I think it would be cheaper here than in Europe because the travel is less expensive from the outer islands than going from country to country. I have no idea about lodgings though. Could the players afford rent if they have a family? How about the ticket prices? With the NFL backing, like they did in Europe, could it be a possibility? Very interesting. At what time of the year would they play? Finish before the NFL season so the players have a chance to catch on an NFL roster or overlap? Being in Hawaii, I’m sure there will be more local players or players with local ties rostered in the new league.

  42. wotda May 31, 2012 8:38 am

Why don’t you ask Siri about the bed size in the cabin using your old man voice.

Siri is overrated. She can’t understand pidgin, can’t sing, and can’t tell jokes. She just tells you she can’t remember the punchline.

  44. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:39 am

PPJ: I believe people have tried to start a pro baseball team as well as a pro football team in Hawaii, but both ventures failed.

  45. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 8:39 am

gigi, no worry. In the military, they pay the officers. On a cruise, you pay them. For somebody 6’1″ should be ok. Maybe it depends on the ship company. I’ve cruised on NCL and Holland America and the bed was not an issue. You could even sleep outside on a lounge chair if desired.

  46. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:40 am

A-House: I am glad you were able to order it. Congrats!

  47. wotda May 31, 2012 8:41 am

If Hawaii winter baseball can’t survive then minor league football can’t survive either.

  48. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:42 am

PPJ: have you ever reserved a balcony cabin? Is it better than ocean view only?

  49. A-House May 31, 2012 8:43 am

As a Company Commander, I had a 6′ 11″ soldier who was drafted – his team was Detroit Pistons – I had to extend his “bunk” bed by 2′.

  50. wotda May 31, 2012 8:43 am

However, I wouldn’t call the HWB league a failure.

  51. A-joe May 31, 2012 8:46 am

Wait… The Blog now has Tsiri?

  52. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 8:46 am

Pro baseball still going strong with winter league. This is not a individual team where we have to travel to the mainland and opponents travel here. Its a league where Oahu will have 2 teams, Big Island 2, Maui and Kauai 1 each. With the NFL backing, it might stand a chance. My concern is if they are relying on attendance, then it would be hard to fill up any stadium. But with Hawaii’s die hard football fans, it may be doable if the reciepts are used for other things besides salaries or just not for everything. The NFL would benefit by having a minor league, ala basebal,l and Hawaii the state and its players may benefit also, with the number of NFL people here.

  53. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 8:48 am

    A-Joe: wouldn’t that be great?

  54. Kevin May 31, 2012 8:51 am

Minor league sports could be very profitable if the mainstream paying public were actually interested in the sport itself.

The paying public is only interested in superstars. Think about that for a sec. NFL, NBA, MLB created a monster that cannot be stopped nor can it’s attitude be changed. The big media is already set up so that the superstars remain superstars whether or not they are getting arrested, breaking athletic records, or doing charity work for a photo op.

I think the mainstream public (aka “paying public”) are too jaded or lazy to try to find interest in anything not marketable in Gatorade chewable candy commercials, tabloid outlets, or featured on Dancing With The Stars.

  55. Kevin May 31, 2012 8:52 am

HWB was fun. Not too often do you get to see talent of that caliber for such a cheap price and a lax atmosphere.

  56. wotda May 31, 2012 8:56 am

No more pro winter league baseball in Hawaii. The NFL’s minor leagues are college, CFL, and the varied arena leagues. I don’t see why they would want to spend their billions on an endorsed minor league.

  57. Ipu Man May 31, 2012 8:59 am

gigi, I hear you can bring lots of luggage on cruise ships.

Mabe hubby can bring his own mattress…

  58. wotda May 31, 2012 8:59 am

The good, more than 200 of the players that played in the HWB league had the opportunity to play in MLB.

  59. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 8:59 am

gigi, no balcony, but unless you get the penthouse, the beds are the same. My brother and another couple had a deluxe veranda so saw the rooms. My wife is still working so she likes the inside cabin because it is totally a blackout room and she could sleep as long as she desired. On our last 2 cruises, we chose the inside cabins. Its OK with me since it saves me money. Just stay away from the lower deck floors at the very front of the ship because the anchors are lowered on some mornings and it makes loud noises early in the morning. If it is your 1st cruise, I recommend at least a window cabin so you can view outside. If you are going with the inside cabin, I recommend you upgrade to an upper floor. Probably cost about $50 more per person. Send me your email address so we can talk more if you desire so not on the WB.

  60. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 9:00 am

Kevin: you are probably right about the “jaded” public. I am one of them. I find it more exciting to watch NBA and NFL — more so than college sports (except for UH sports).

  61. Ipu Man May 31, 2012 9:01 am

If UH stays on base, they will be drinking fluroride in their water.

It was supposedly used in German concentrations camps to dumb down internees.

Also in Siberia. Flurodide was originally used as rat poisen. So if the team seems

a bit groggy in practice, now you know…

  62. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 9:02 am

    PPJ2: good info. thanks.

  63. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 9:06 am

Ipu: Hopefully, they can buy bottled water on the base. I think the water is chlorinated, too, eh?

  64. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 9:08 am

I wonder if they include PPV for the games in the Hawaii Football League at a small cost (not like UH’s PPV), or just be on local TV for the game of the week. It may draw interest, especially if some of the players with local ties are on the rosters. They may even have it nation wide too. What if the old Hawaii Warriors or were on TV? With the amount of TV stations now in Hawaii as compared to the 1970s it may have a chance. This would be an all Hawaii league with future NFL stars and may catch on. They could charter a sponsored plane to the outer islands for a trip before and after the games. Only a short flight.

  65. wotda May 31, 2012 9:09 am

Our municipal water supply is chlorinated.

  66. al May 31, 2012 9:11 am

hmmm…if i were the blog host i’d be asking for a stipend, what with all these new ads bringing more money to the s/a.

  67. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 9:12 am

Anybody know how the current (pro, semipro?)football league in Hawaii is doing financially? I’m sure some of those players will get a look, say if the league would start up next year. Maybe the NFL would have to buy out the current league to operate here.

  68. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 9:13 am

wotda: Certain areas are more chlorinated than others. For example, St Stephen’s Diocesan Center, where the Catholic bishop resides, — the water is really chlorinated, very noticeable. That’s why they furnished us with Menehune water — chilled and bottled.

  69. al May 31, 2012 9:17 am

did gigi realize what she said regarding sleep arrangements in japan?

    this is a family blog…no?

  70. al May 31, 2012 9:18 am

i really don’t see an nfl minor league developing here.

    its all about the money.

  71. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 9:22 am

Pro football games on Oahu could be played at Ching field or even local high schools, with a number of them having turfs now (Mililani, Leilehua, Roosevelt, Kamehameha and others). The NFL could “rent” those fields, giving such schools added income. Aloha Stadium for the championship game or even 1 of the semifinals with the other on a neighbor island. Sure, Aloha Stadium wouldn’t be sold out, but with the local TV games’ publicity, 20+ thousand is realistic.

  72. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 9:23 am

al, #70. That’s why I said too much info. LOL

  73. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2012 9:37 am

I’ve been the chair/president of a few organizations. I’ve encouraged suggestions to make people feel involved, even though there weren’t a lot not-very-good suggestions. I think the NFL is being polite to HTA. There’s not going to be a developmental league here. There won’t be an exhibition game. NFL has a developmental league. It’s called the NCAA.

  74. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 9:47 am

ST, you are probally right about the league not happening here, but wouldn’t it be interesting to watch, Colt, Bryant, and others that fell just short of the NFL? A lot of former UH linemen and players living here anyway, maybe they could also collect a paycheck while keeping their dreams alive.

  75. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 9:49 am

OK enough from me about the NFL minor league here. I won’t go on and on like some other annoying person.

  76. papajoe2 May 31, 2012 10:07 am

ST or anyone else. Any time on the USC game? I checked the UH website and most of the games don’t have times to it. I may be driving in from Vegas. I have a party to go to on the Friday before the game.

  77. wotda May 31, 2012 10:19 am

The start time for the USC game is TBA.

Video ads and the WB? Welcome to big time, Mr. Tsai!

Just read the report of the lawsuit from HNN. And based on the pictures, this guy was severely beaten. Also, read the lawsuit that was filed in Hawaii and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture of Boyd Gaming’s policy on security. This guy may have hit the jackpot, so to speak.

Anyway, what I’ve noticed is that the old Fremont area has always been high risk for crime. You could be walking then all of a sudden find yourself in a bad part of town surrounded by drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes and the homeless (Oh my!). However, you could be walking through the parking lot of the Bellagio and get mugged just as easily. Of course, the criminals might be considered more upscale and drive nicer cars. 😉

When in Vegas walk in groups and always be aware of your surroundings.

Speaking of sports in the military, I remember convincing my CO to let me and a friend take part in a military-only surf competition near Camp Pendleton. Room and transportation wasn’t paid for, however it did allow us to get our of work for a couple of days. Funny thing was when we got there, we didn’t even swim out for our heat. Instead, we drove further south to visit his friends..lol! Yep, your tax dollars hard at work.

  116. Shoko May 31, 2012 3:08 pm

Okay, I exceeded my usual number of post for the day. Signing off and wish everyone a good night.

Since it was not on the news (over a year ago), it may have just been fake.

14 wake ups to go. 7 for the seniors; albeit there are those who will be back next school year.

The next bunch of days is an eternity in student and teacher time.

  128. WarriorMojo May 31, 2012 4:08 pm

Wafan, every time you do that, I find myself checking each post to figure out what is different.

I’m OCD that way, I guess.

  129. d1shima May 31, 2012 4:31 pm

    …and we made it Home.

    Safe!

  130. jm2375 May 31, 2012 4:43 pm

    Welcome home d1!

wafan – I thought only the DOE did that – seniors get out a week before the underclassmen. 🙄

I’m such a bad auntie. Congrats to the vball Warriors who made the conference all-academic roll!

Congrats to Stephanie Ricketts on her All-American honor!

Off-topic – my one quibble with cruise cuisine is they don’t serve food specific to the region it is traversing

  134. Slugger May 31, 2012 7:02 pm

    Glad you’re home safe, d1.

I’d Pay to watch triple A baseball in Hawaii again. Loved going to Islanders games.

Not me. Seems like there’s a lot of ocean around cruise ships and I don’t eat seafood. 🙄

  136. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 7:45 pm

After watching the Thunder beat the Spurs by 20 points today, I think they have a chance to win the series. And then it will be the Thunder vs. the Heat.

Now THAT will be the games of the century.

  137. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 7:48 pm

SteveM: Don’t most Japanese eat a lot of seafood? Look at their sushi. You won’t find beef on top of it.

Actually, I no longer eat sashimi. Too many parasites.

  138. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 7:51 pm

When we shop for groceries, the only animal flesh we purchase is chicken and fish. That gets tiresome, so tonight, for example, we bought Korean take out for dinner. Meat juhn for me, and kalbi for hubby.

  139. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 7:57 pm

ST: I’m surprised your cell phone can take video. I guess I am a dinosaur, as my phone does not have the video or the photo feature. All it does is make and receive phone calls. And I keep it turned off most of the time, making emergency calls only.

  140. kkobi425 May 31, 2012 8:16 pm

Mainstreet area is pretty seedy. County jail is two blocks away. You would think

you would be safe in the property with all the video monitoring.

  141. SteveM May 31, 2012 9:06 pm

Reading the S-A story on the Main Street incident, I recall that rasu begasu, LizKauai, wafan, izzy, Committed Road Warrior, and I were in that restroom corridor. There was some art work on the men’s restroom wall and Liz and some other ladies wanted to see it. This was the Sunday after the UH-UNLV game last September when rasu issued a last cattle call at the Main Street buffet.

Rasu parked in the parking structure there. It was dark. I had a bad feeling in the structure and walking to the casino. rasu wondered why I turned blind corners very wide…old Coastie habits I told him. I think he posted a comment about how I walked. 🙂

  142. chopsueyboy May 31, 2012 9:07 pm

    ggh

where do you go for Korean food?

my favorite place for meat juhn is O-Bok at Manoa Marketplace and Young’s Kal-Bi for Kal-bi in Aiea

  143. BigHiloFan2 May 31, 2012 9:43 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos.

Watts Way. Martin Luther King Boulevard. Exposition. USC. 9/1. Lord o please o please help me. i gotta go. i do gotta go!

  144. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 9:55 pm

chopsueyboy: we get our Korean food from Soon’s Kalbi in Salt Lake. They make the best meat juhn, I swear.

Since I am on a diet, I didn’t eat the whie rice. I just ate the meat and the kim chee.

  145. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 10:10 pm

SteveM: “art work”? I guess you mean grafitti. Was it obscene?

  146. al May 31, 2012 10:16 pm

mrs. ahouse …..would a couple orders of roast duck suffice as a truce option?

  147. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 10:19 pm

I don’t know why I thought A-House was Chinese. He just does not look Japanese. Lol.

  148. al May 31, 2012 10:30 pm

i’ve spent hundreds of hours at the main street station casino and have never felt insecure there. there’s always security in uniform and incognito. that’s the first robbery i’ve heard about.

  149. al May 31, 2012 10:34 pm

    check that thousands of hours.

  150. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 10:37 pm

That Vegas incident could have ramifications for Waikiki. I keep reading stories about tourists being knifed, beaten, and robbed in Waikiki. Are we supposed to flood the streets with cops? That would be unfeasible.

  151. gigi-hawaii May 31, 2012 10:40 pm

I was robbed at gunpoint in a Fifth Avenue elevator in New York back in the 1970s. The robber followed my boss (an attorney) from the bank where he cashed his paycheck to the elevator. He had seen my boss put the money in his shirt pocket.

When he pointed the gun at him, my boss offered his wallet, but the robber insisted on the cash in the pocket. My boss threw the money on the floor. The robber picked up the cash and got my wallet and the wallets of the other women in the elevator.

He fled and was never caught.

13 wake ups to go. 6 for the seniors; albeit there are those who will be back next school year.

    jm2468 . . .

Good to move the seniors out a bit early. Most of them have already stopped working since a month or two or five ago. And, since they have all the answers I tell them it is best they go to work and tell their bosses how to make things much more efficient and how to be better bosses.

  155. mctruck June 1, 2012 4:09 am

I have an elderlybout 74y.o. neighbor who was rubbed, lockstock&barrel, completely bushwacked/cleaned out when he took a weekend trip to see his son when he lived near Baylor University; well, at least he didn’t have a whole lot to move when he relocated to Marshall, Texas.

I guess, theives look out for elderly people who don’t think as fast or move as fast as younger people..though, not entirely.

  156. mctruck June 1, 2012 4:09 am

    rubbed=robbed

  157. mctruck June 1, 2012 4:12 am

Gigi, ur#156…carry two(2) wallets….one empty, the other with the goods.

  158. mctruck June 1, 2012 4:23 am

    Gigi,

don’t know if u came across an article recently, on-line about how much of the chicken sold in grocery stores and resturants are fed a special engineered/ modified feed to make them grow faster and heavier because of the need and demand issues, much like certain live stock.Whatever they are fed is passed on to whoever eats their flesh, etc. Now, that’s spooky, zombie-ish!!

  159. d1shima June 1, 2012 5:24 am

    Great Morning All!

Who knows? After holding camp at Pearl Harbor some players might become attracted to the military…

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  160. wafan June 1, 2012 5:51 am

    Welcome home M/M d1!

  161. Wes'side Warrior June 1, 2012 6:06 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Happy Aloha Friday to you all!

Looking forward to Bruddah Mo’s and LilRich’s game tomorrow night at the Arena. Lots of things to do this weekend, but I should be able to make the game, with a kid or two, at least.

Every single time we’ve ever gone to Vegas, we’d usually stay at the Cal. This was for annual business conventions, shows, and school reunions. Have never once ran into any trouble, even while wandering the far end of Fremont. Robberies happen everywhere, daily. I’d venture a guess that more robberies are probably committed at convenience stores and gas stations than at casinos. I highly doubt it happens more often in or near casinos, (although many others may disagree in that the casinos are the ones robbing us in the first place). I’m not much of a gambler, so a few coins here and there, or a Keno game once in a while, and I’m done. My main focus at Vegas (aside from business) is always the buffet spread, along with whatever local food I can find.

Anywayz, hope you all have a great weekend!

she noticed she was holding the handles and the bag was gone

  163. tommui June 1, 2012 7:10 am

#163 Usually when I go out in a strange place, I usually carry $20 and a credit card in my pocket – no wallet.

My niece, an investment banker type, usually changes at work, to worn out jeans, sneakers, when she goes to or from her work place. Unfortunately she also wears the same to theaters, restaurants etc.

  164. mctruck June 1, 2012 7:16 am
