One tough mother

Keala Watson was a tough defensive lineman for the Warriors. But he’s only the second-toughest in his household. His wife, Leona, recently gave birth to the couple’s first child, Alapa. A few days later, Leona was back in school. Leona and Keala are on track to earn their bachelor’s degrees in May.

* * *

Offensive linemen David Garness and Brent Leonard are tall and light-haired. Teammmates refer to them as “the twins.” Thanks to center John Estes, they now are known collectively as the Smithys because of their perceived resemblance to assistant coach Brian Smith.
Garness and Leonard helped Estes’ team win today’s Super Games competition โ€” tug-o-war.

    Ralph,

Samson is *not* too small to play center in the NFL! His mobility was why he started as a rookie and he was not too small for that system. Other teams have done very well with smaller, mobile, offensive lines. The trouble is, the management at Miami changed and Parcells’ system is geared for power running with bigger OL where mobility is not valued.

Samson has trade value around the NFL and if the right team needs a center (and doesn’t get a center high in the draft), then they will probably approach Miami to try to trade for Samson. If Miami would trade Samson for a low pick I bet they could trade him within a day…but they have to look out for themselves and hold out for the draft pick they want (see: last year and their plan for Jason Taylor).

Trading Samson might have been the plan all along for Miami’s management, as new management often wants to get “their players” and turns the roster over quickly. Miami cut a lot of players who were Samson’s teammates his rookie season, but the players that have value they trade instead of cut.

One indication of Miami’s plan is how they signed a former high draft pick to be their new starter at C *and* they signed another former high draft pick to provide depth at C/G. If they were going to have Samson be depth at C/G, they didn’t need to sign *two* free agents within a week that can play both positions. Miami’s head coach was the OL coach under Parcells at Dallas and they are getting their type of OL on their team…that doesn’t mean that the other players cannot play well elsewhere in the NFL.

those HPU colors don’t do the warriors justice, it’s time for a change… how about white Ts with our green logo….

  6. Garret March 4, 2009 10:11 am

    Pride,

I agree with your analysis of Samson’s situation and think that you and Buffoman are correct that Samson shouldn’t “bulk up” this offseason. I think he shouldn’t take away from his strengths (mobility, athleticism, pulling) to try to fit a system that wants to get new players in anyway.

  7. Ralph March 4, 2009 10:11 am

    congratulations to Leona and Keala!

  16. Garret March 4, 2009 10:22 am

    A-House,

Regarding your post at the end of the last blog, I think one *major* difference between Texas and Hawaii high schools is that there are a lot of high schools in which the head coaches in Texas believe that a verbal commitment should be honored. Once one of their players gives a verbal commit to that school, even as early as the junior year, that coach expects the player to honor the commitment.

That is why some high school coaches in Texas got so upset when schools pull scholarship offers at the last second (I think Oklahoma State and a few others did that earlier this year for the 2009 recruits). The coaches made the point that once the players committed, they stopped ALL recruiting efforts–no trips to other schools, no phone calls taken with other schools, etc. The player has a *big* incentive to listen to his coach and keep his word, since he has to play his senior season under that coach!

I don’t think that the Hawaii high school coaches have the same standard for verbal commits. That works for UH when they get a local commit to break their verbal to another school and commit to UH (I can think of examples from as recently as last month), but it works against UH when they have their top commits try to be poached by mainland schools.

One HUGE thing to note is that UH coaches have to constantly keep recruiting their commits in order to keep away the poachers. That takes a lot of time away from filling the other recruiting spots and from actually coaching the team. That is a luxury that coaches in Texas (even at non-BCS schools like Houston, Rice, etc.) have that UH does not. There are still some recruits in Texas that break their verbal commits, but the percentage is MUCH lower than in Hawaii (and California) and they tend to come from the high schools in which the coaches don’t expect verbal commits to be honored.

  17. SteveM March 4, 2009 10:25 am

    Good morning everyone!

Filling in for homey: I think our “twins” could beat those “twins”… ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Garret March 4, 2009 10:27 am

    A-House,

One very important thing that Mac is doing is establishing a link to every local high school. Holding coaching clinics and visiting the high schools is a great way to build relationships. I remember that Mac was the only UH coach to speak at that meeting of Hawaii principals also, that was also important.

Building those ties is important because when a recruit is wavering, they will tend to ask people for advice–with a coach definitely one of those to be consulted. The coach can point out the good things about UH, and the coach can let UH know that the recruit needs more convincing from the UH coaches. Mac wasn’t doing those things just to be a nice guy…I believe he understands that building those relationships are important for UH’s prospects in the future.

@Garret, what do you know about how Hawaii coaches think? Who did you play for in Hawaii? Who was your football coach? You think they don’t honor their word or that of their players? You gotta be kidding me that no Texas recruit ever broke their verbal commitment to a school.

JD has a difficult decision to make with Nash…1 year to go on his contract….do recruits come because of the coach, the school, or both the school and the athletic program regardless of coach…Kansas State recruited very well even after Huggins and Beasley left early-each with one year at the school.

  25. hntkm12 March 4, 2009 10:39 am

Is there anyone planning on stopping in to check in on Jason before taking in the MS-UH bezbol game on Sat.?

  28. Ralph March 4, 2009 10:45 am

Jackson Wheeler does most of the scouting and recruiting for the wbb team….our recruits are a reflection of him in the past, currently and next season-the only potential loss would be players who are more concerned with Nash’s coaching status as opposed to those who think UH has a program that they want to play for….we need players who want to play for Hawaii regardless of the coach….we aren’t going to get the high price coaches so whomever coaches will be on the low pay scale with little Head coaching experience.

    russian

some of the brightest minds, male or female, don’t necessarily have to have had play the game of football to be a student of the game.

on all a accounts garret is a student of the game to the highest degree, so i disagree with your statement that knowing the game or making an observation of a player needs having played the game as a prerequisite.

  31. Russian March 4, 2009 10:52 am

@Ralphie boy, Wheeler recruits and scouts for the women’s team? You and Garret are two of the same. Who you played ball for?

  32. Russian March 4, 2009 10:53 am

@roysan12-san, did I say you have to play the game to be a student of the game? Where you played?

  33. Ralph March 4, 2009 11:00 am

oops Wheeler recruits for the mbb..my bad…why do I have to be playing for someone at this time to make a statement with a typo…

  34. mauiwarrior March 4, 2009 11:01 am

I think playing the game gives you more insight as to how things happen…..being a student of the game you are limited to what you know about programs and how they work, just my two cents

  35. Kekoa March 4, 2009 11:03 am

Ralph ~ True dat. KS is an established bb school. In their case, I believe it’s partly because of famous ball players who have played there.

Traditions at UCLA set by coach Wooden added his expert coaching to their list of great players. Many other big time bb schools, had famous coaching like him.

In comparison, UH has had a few great players that have made it into the NBA, but we don’t have a *legendary* coach to brag on…not yet anyway. Who’s to say that coach Nash could not be that person? He just needs a fair amount of time to recruit the right players to start his dynasty run. I say JD will support him in that effort.

Now days, every fan wants that championship yesterday. Patience is a virtrue.

  36. Russian March 4, 2009 11:06 am

@Ralphie boy, you was mentioning coaches and I just asked who you played for. how was I to know that was a typo? you seemed knowledged and as roysan16-san said a student of the game.

Russian ~ Hope this helps clarify the name *Alapa.* It describes the offspring as being an athlete, or a child who will be very strong & active.

Kamehameha’s Army had a company of Warrior’s that carried that name into battle under the leadership of Kalani Opu’u.

I’m with Garret and Pride, Samson’s fine the way he is, just gotta find the right system. John Estes is very much in the same boat, too. Both are solid C/G with good athleticism. Samson was rightfully a second rounder, and I see Estes as a 3rd-4th round guy next year, although 2nd isn’t out of the question.

The depth at center in the draft this year, however, will affect Samson’s trade value. If the Dolphins feel like they aren’t getting good offers, they might just keep him on the bench.

Of course, this is assuming he is benched. He could still show up, motivated with a nice little nasty streak, and earn a starting role.

And FYI, I walk 40 ft in 5.87 sec, bench 2.25 lb five times, can dunk a basketball on homey’s Playskool rim, and have a 3.8 GPA. ๐Ÿ˜‰

There are a couple articles in today’s Ka Leo that might be of interest to you guys. First is off the wire, “Coaches’ fat paychecks unacceptable.” Published originally in Cal Poly’s Mustang Daily, it delves into the Jim Calhoun tirade, with cameos by Pete Carroll, Chris Petersen, and the University of Tennessee coaching staff.

There is also a letter to the editor by (groan) Noel Jacob Kent, UH professor (I heard enough of this dude during the UARC controversy). He says that $1.1 million for Mack and the new UH system’s president’s salary range of 450-550k plus perks (see also “Presidential hopefuls under review”) are too much, and that UH should cut admin salaries by 1/3 and cap all salaries at $250,000.

Plus, a little “Did You Know?” column gives Mack’s salary, Jim Donovan’s salary ($240,000), and Chancellor Hinshaw’s salary ($350,000).

  61. Kekoa March 4, 2009 12:23 pm

    One more thing Russian

DPK used the word kaona. In the context that he used that particular word, it simply means that the name Alapa could carry a hidden meaning. A kind of concealed reference to athleticism, a pejorative innuendo.

    Class dismissed.

  62. Da Punchbowl Kid March 4, 2009 12:23 pm

You are correct on all accounts Senor Kekoa,

A couple of other notes about Kamehameha’s “Alapa Brigade”: They were all of the Ali’i caste from the Big Island’s west coast primarily, and were recruited and trained from boyhood to be Kamehameha’s most elite shock troops and protectors in battle. Numbering over a thousand, their average height was in the 6’5″ range. All were purported to be blood relatives of Kamehameha. IIRC, they wore the uniquely colored solid white helmets and capes.

The name Smith is common and dime a dozen. I don’t know about the 2 haoles as far as can they play? I have to see them in action before I make any judgments as to whether they’re any good. My only advice them is work hard, get stronger, know your plays, learn from the new offensive line coach and be a tough guy. Oh yeah, and show discipline and don’t make stupid penalties like the last offensive line. The name of the game is what have you done lately. But, good luck to them. They’ll need it.

Jason, re #58 – getting “real” about life on this planet in general is healthy, I think. We all need to be able to earn a living, but clearly an adjustment in priorities could be considered when an NFL player is given a deal for $100M – an amount of money that could feed and educate a bunch of people long enough to allow them to be viable human beings and contributors to society.

One thing about kaona or hidden meaning. Those meanings are usually secret and bestowed by an elder or grandparent. LizKauai was refering to the re-emergence of Football Fan from the 2007 season that owes someone lunch, but disappeared and periodically shows and disrupts the flow of the blog…

  79. Kekoa March 4, 2009 1:34 pm

I was gonna say something about the the abuse of Ralph’s name. “You can say John, you can say J, or you can say JJ…but ya doesn’t have to say Johnson!”

…as in Ralphie boy? No, I don’t think so.

  80. Kekoa March 4, 2009 1:35 pm

Liz ~ Was I pontificating like a certain attorney we know? Heheheh…

  81. Da Punchbowl Kid March 4, 2009 1:38 pm

Besides, Ralph and Garret know we love ’em. They’re both big boys and can handle themselves in here.

  82. Russian March 4, 2009 1:41 pm

    @Kekoa, spasiba for the translation.

@some of you, did I degrade anyone? did I hurt your feelings? what unsubstantiated statements did I make? all I did was ask questions. Jason gave his specs. he’s a witty fellow. did I strike a nerve?

    @the other Russian, funny monkey.

  83. Russian March 4, 2009 1:44 pm

@Kekoa, I was using the honeymooners humor. Russians have humor too. remember Smirnoff?

  84. Kazz March 4, 2009 1:45 pm

Looks like a good day to avoid aholes on the blog and to head out early for some errands before checking out the Wahine tonight at Manoa.

  85. Kekoa March 4, 2009 1:45 pm

Russian ~ No problem. Just thought you might want to know that Ralph is not a young boy. He is a respected professional in the medical community and happens to be a fan of UH sports.

  86. Da Punchbowl Kid March 4, 2009 1:52 pm

Not to mention that both Ralph and Garret are two of the smartest posters here in addition to being huge supporters of UH Athletics.

  87. Russian March 4, 2009 1:54 pm

@Kazz, you referring to me too? did I call anyone ahole? you a former player too? measurables?

    @Kekoa, okay, Ralph it is.

  88. Russian March 4, 2009 1:59 pm

@Da Punchbowl Kid, smart doesn’t mean you know it all. especially thinking that they think they know what a coach thinks. and many here believe them too. not much rebuttal so it gives the appearance that many agree. I don’t agree and I get denounced?

  89. TOM March 4, 2009 2:04 pm

If I read Garret’s statement correctly

There are still some recruits in Texas that break their verbal commits, but the percentage is MUCH lower than in Hawaii

Now, I don’t know where Garret gets his knowledge that the percentage is much lower than Hawaii, but as he is a former professor, I’m not going to dispute it.

However, when one blogger takes Garret task and says

You gotta be kidding me that no Texas recruit ever broke their verbal commitment to a school.

I have to question his reading ability.

Incidentally, observation of factual events are not necessarily suspect – Charles Darwin comes to mind.

@all, it has been interesting interacting with some of you. much luck to your teams. das.

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid March 4, 2009 2:25 pm

    Russian,

Because we don’t respond to a post doesn’t mean we agree with it. I posted that comment because I thought you may want to know who you’re talking to.

Anybody can say anything they want here, the opinions will run from one extreme to another some times. Having met both Ralph and Garret, I can assure you they are excellent people and VERY hardcore UH fans. If they say something, they usually have a reason for saying it. I can’t even say that I am as informed as they are, but they aren’t the kinds of guys who will say things to be unfair or inflammatory. Ralph goes to a LOT of games for a few different programs, Garret would if he lived here, I’m sure. The point is, they have a lot of passion about UH sports, and this is a place to share one’s thoughts about that.

If you stay here long enough you’ll see that most who post here are good folks. We may disagree at times, but everyone here ends up being friends and our exchanges will reflect that. I hope you find this useful.

  94. LizKauai [Believer] March 4, 2009 2:31 pm

With “friends” like this, who needs enemies?

@Kazz, you referring to me too? did I call anyone ahole? you a former player too? measurables?

    @Kekoa, okay, Ralph it is.

    Measurables? Here we go.

    1 – 6 minutes 35 seconds…in lunch hour traffic from work to Camelia’s.

2 – 1 minute 32 seconds…two plates full of veggies, squid, chicken, ribs, beef, pork, rice, poke, garlic cloves, mac salad, and miso soup.

3 – 15 minutes 3 seconds…the amount of time that my thumb can last in a thumb fight before giving up due to exhaustion.

4 – Six inches…the height that I jump out of my chair at Camelia’s when DPK pokes my hand with his fork instead of poking the barbecue beef on the grill.

5 – 2 feet 6 inches…the length of my broad jump, trying to avoid a kick from A-sports if she were my dart partner, because I suck at darts.

6 – 4 pounds…the total weight of the two bowling balls that I will use at cosmic bowling next month because I suck at bowling too. So I’ll roll two balls at one time to give myself better odds at hitting something.

7 – 7…the amount of times that I had to take the SAT test to get the minimum qualifying score of 400.

8 – 100%…the amount of times that I have won make believe sumo matches against Las Vegas, while hanging his shirt up on the wall and making believe that we are in a real live sumo match.

Not quite up to par for the NFL, but hopefully good enough for Tsai-ko special teams.

  132. Da Punchbowl Kid March 4, 2009 3:38 pm

You are fountain of information, Col. Kekoa.

Interesting day, can’t say that the WB has ever been infiltrated by the eastern bloc before today. I’m glad that we had a spymaster like yourself screening the op from your bunker deep underground in the ceded lands.

  133. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 4, 2009 3:38 pm

  137. Kekoa March 4, 2009 3:48 pm

Kazz ~ Here’s the hard rub. My real estate birdee told me that she rented out a large 6 bedroom house in Pearl City to some construction guys here to do some of the stadium renovation.

So my question is, why not our local construction crews who have been idle seen the economic downturn?

re-blog advertising working (mobi laptop card)

just to pass on a story, or feedback

the mobi ad sold me on trying their product

it was last november when i saw the ad on top of the page

mobile laptop card was always something i wanted

i looked at sprint and verizon

but both had caps on internet usage, mobi doesn’t

a lot cheaper than verizon and sprint by almost $25

no contract, the other 2 have 2 yr. contract

however w/mobi out of pocket initial expense was around $225.

which covers the costs of the modem, installation etc.

    minus a $60 mail in rebate ($165 )

the convenience of a laptop card is that i take it everywhere…beach, appointments, bars, coffee shops, work, home etc.

the plug in modem is totally transferable to any other laptop or desktop

    these numbers i don’t understand, but it 115kbs and 3G, so i’m thinking it’s

plenty fast–some disconnects, but the same amount i’d say i had with hawaii telcom.

surprised they only advertised a short time

hope what i wrote helps someone in making a decision on future internet service.

    Hiya Tsaikos everywhere.

    LizK,
in answer to yur inquiry about kekoa’s prognostication…..zzzzZZZZZZ ๐Ÿ˜€

    Russian,
yu got some good points, I’ll give you dat,
and if you’re wondering if we’re I’m givin da Ocoach
some mulligans or not, righto on da mulliganZZZ.

and if you got any question that WE’re wishing ALLLLL of our coaches the best wishes and prayers, then you don’t belong here and you shouldn’t pretend yur a Warrior booster.

C’mon pal, we all have different motivations for being here, and one day our motivation might be a little different than the next day, for each of us. But the guys on the other teams don’t give a crap about each of us. They want to know about the WARRIORS. can the WARRIORS deliver? can the coach deliver. the proof was in the results. gotta address the problem. and it was a PROBLEM.

so hats off to Coach Mack for trying to fix da PROBLEM. not do say we dump anybody. life is full of ups and downs. i give da Coach credit for trying. and being classy.

  189. bighilofan2 March 4, 2009 8:51 pm

not to say yu denigrated anybody, Russian. i didn’t say that. but you did try to put down some of my friends, and that was not nice.

but then again, you can ask some of my friends. and relatives.

and they’ll all Agree that I’m not nice. ๐Ÿ˜†

and in that i agree wit you… what do they know about brilliant minds. ๐Ÿ˜€

  193. bighilofan2 March 4, 2009 9:03 pm

    Russian,

I’ll bite. Next season, if we neva go try get help so we can help OUR brother to get samoa tutorin, what kind excuse would coach come up wit if we got our butt handed to us.

the truth is this: I SAW COACH SMITH COACHING LAST SEASON. no doubt he tries hard. no doubt he believes in himself. no doubt coach believes in him. BUT at least one of the players wuz making like a luuza to him, crossing his arms, turning his head, just da common place Class A akk like yu not paying attention kinda jerk. I saw dat in da attitude of one player a year ago, at the Spring Game. I saw it again in da Cincy game, and dat was at da end of da season.

and yu wanna know my measurables too? try ask…. ๐Ÿ˜€

  194. brew808 March 4, 2009 9:03 pm

Hi Tsaikos! Let me apologize in advance for this long post. (This might be a record long post!) ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Garret, Jason & others have posted on Samson Satele and his future with Miami or other NFL teams. I think many of us have been wondering the same thing regarding the relative size of Samson (and possible John Estes) as center(s) in the NFL. Yeah – the ‘phins are bulking up their OL – that is a clear trend. I know there are several teams and OL coaches that utilize the speedy/mobile interior linemen. I knew the Broncos had that philosophy – but they’ve just changed coaches. It looks like they and the Texans had the lightest starting C’s. Even Kreutz & Mawae are lighter than Samson.

Here is a list of NFL Centers based on 2008 rosters. The data is from Yahoo Sports and shows their 2-deep charts. The list is in the 2009 draft-order. Dallas and Panthers traded their #1’s. Many teams have only one C. We know other OL are likely the backups. The second C (labels with the “b”) is the back-up C per Yahoo. Groves is still listed as a Raider altho he’s signed w/ Miami. The players stats are also from Yahoo. I know Groves and Saturday are much bigger than listed. It’s pretty interesting how the C’s are all similar in size, and that so many were undrafted FA’s. Okay – you can make your own analysis …. or simply ignore this post. ๐Ÿ˜€

look what I found this morning.

    By Ferd Lewis
    Advertiser Staff Writer

University of Hawai’i has refused to make a settlement offer to women’s basketball coach Jim Bolla, who has declined to resign, people who claim knowledge of the situation have said.
Bolla is currently on paid leave from his job as head women’s basketball coach while the school investigates a player’s claim that he kicked her during practice earlier this season. Bolla, who is in his fifth season as the team’s head coach, has not been on the bench since Feb. 13 and is not expected to attend next week’s Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Reno, Nev.
UH Manoa spokesman Gregg Takayama declined comment yesterday other than to say Bolla remains on paid leave. When reached by phone, Bolla said “no comment.”
It is the second investigation of Bolla’s treatment of players in less than a year, both prompted by complaints from players. The previous one, which took place during the summer of 2008, was said to have resulted in a warning letter, according to people familiar with the case.

Under terms of Bolla’s contract, there are provisions for termination by UH with or without cause.
Termination without cause comes with a 90-day notice, according to the contract, and requires UH to pay damages equal to the amount left on the contract.
Bolla has two seasons remaining on a contract due to expire June 30, 2011. His annual salary is believed to be more than $120,000 per season.
If released for cause, Bolla must be given 10 days’ notice but the contract says “salary and any benefits …” end upon termination.

Grounds for cause include, according to the agreement, “committing material or repeated violations” of the contract or school policies AND “engaging in conduct which is unlawful or results in coach’s conviction of a crime or displays continual or serious disrespect or disregard for the character of the university or causes notorious and public scandal …”

HOBOY, HU WUZ DA GENIUS DAT WEN WRITE DIS ONE UP? AND LED BY HUU?

    good morning

when something ticks right, you want to see what makes it tick.

so take a look at TCU football team-I did; they have it going

go to their official athletic site, and read about the TCU coach, gary anderson

very impressive resume, very impressive what he has done for TCU football

and not out of the realm of possibility of coach mack replicating or bettering here at UH imo.

i looked at their 2009 roster of players, maybe 3 JC transfers-and get this 17 red shirt freshmen ( i think Coach Mack is going in this direction too, w/ gray/ red shirting incoming players)

but what has me intrigued about TCU football is their 4-2-5 defense, and how it limited Boise in the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl–less than 40 yrds rushing, 200 something yards passing in a 17-16 win

in TCU gary anderson 10 yrs. at TCU -8 at as coach, 2 as a DC–the TCU defense nationally recognized as being one of the best

is the 4-2-5 defense might be the answer to the spread offense? idk, maybe

i know UH uses nickle package, but not too familiar if its the same as TCU

whats the counter to a defense that shows pass defense–i would think run right at them

hypothetically speaking, how would TCU fare against Florida?

would Florida coach urban meyer run the ball, utilizing TE sets, 1-2 in the game, to counter the 4-2-5; maybe, i would think so, but it would be an interesting matchup

last thought, with so many defenses using nickle defense–don’t you wish UH would come out w/ TE look–i do.

from a fan’s prospective, i just love big line men (TE) blocking and catching passes and running over the DB, such a mismatch –a 6’5” 260 lbs. TE on a smallish DB….oh there’s a thought for UH to consider.

  244. roysan17 March 5, 2009 6:04 am

nice one roysan-you don’t pay attention

as your big brother how many times have you heard that?

everyones a step ahead of you

they’re at the new blog…ding, ding, ding

    sshhheesh
