Shutter can train with teammates

Quarterback Cayman Shutter will remain on suspension from team activities until at least mid-July, but he will be allowed to participate with teammates in unsupervised workouts.

Head coach Norm Chow said the players are on their own for those workouts, which lead to the opening of training camp on Aug. 3.

Shutter was arrested on March 29 on suspicion of drunken driving. On April 3, he was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Chow said not embarrassing the program “is a team rule.”

Chow is on the mainland through Sunday. Chow and Shutter are scheduled to meet on Monday. Chow said he likely will wait until after Shutter’s trial on July 20 before re-evaluating the punishment.

Shutter was UH’s No. 2 quarterback before his suspension.

Remember linebacker Ben Mamea from Kahuku?

He is set to go on a two-year church mission. Mamea did not attend college last year, instead working to raise money for his mission trip. His eligibility clock has not started.

Former UH safety Richard Torres is in talks with NFL and CFL teams. If he fails to land a tryout offer, he will seek a master’s degree. Washington, Washington State and Utah State have offered Torres a coaching position as a graduate assistant.

I like the looks of our defense. Offense got lots of growing to do. But, what about our Special Teams? Have our “issues” been addressed and solved? I’d love to see the automatic extra points of days gone by. Please… no more adventures in that phase of the game!

Now is the time when Shutter has to show his leadership capabilities and he will have to work twice as hard to show he wants to be on this team…Like they say he has to do the right thing when no one is watching I believe if he does this then Coach Chow may welcome him back for Fall Camp…

Donovan texts there is no discussion at all anymore about a UH-Notre Dame.

ND wanted to play on Dec. 1, when UH is scheduled to play S.Alabama. But TV deals and other factors made it difficult for that to happen. Also, the MWC does not want its members to play after Dec. 1.

So, no, there will be no UH-Notre Dame game this year.

  53. A-joe May 2, 2012 9:34 am

Wow! I can’t believe Notre Dame entertained the idea to play us on such short notice!

I still remember being in high school, watching sports one evening and seeing Jim Leahy announce the words, “you kids that are in the 6th grade, you will be playing the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in 1991.” Jim went on to say how difficult it is to secure a play date with ND being that they were booked solid 10 to 14 years down the road.

And now we can schedule a game with them within the year. My, how times have changed.

[sigh] …I’m back in the real world again.

This is the first time I did a post-cruise hotel stay and found it a good transition back into the real world. Pay for fuud–and remember to tip and pay before leaving the restaurant. Fill up your own ice bucket. Housekeeping comes only once a day. No gnawing on airport sandwiches hours after dining room breakfast.

papajoe2 probably exited the Panama Canal on the Pacific side around now. I’m not envious. No, I’m not…not. ๐Ÿ™ Mrs. Bulla and Divas should just be home too from the W. Caribbean (OK, I envied that cruise a little).

    I need a nap. BBL

  70. hossana May 2, 2012 11:24 am

It is indeed a sad and tragic day in Hawaii sports history with the passing of 2 sports legends in Hakoti, Andy, and nationally in Jr. Seau.

Certainly, all 3 were heroes in their day and the manner of their passing is indeed of tragic consequences with two by illnesses of which one was caused by a blatant assault and with Seau, tragically we will never know whether the constant hits he took played a role in his depressed and mentally unstable state.

    May they rest in peace.

  71. Nobunaga May 2, 2012 12:04 pm

Assuming he doesn’t get a pro shot, having Richard Torres as a GA not only provides the listed schools with an upstanding student coach but a potential recruiting edge for future Kahuku High football recruits?

  72. mikey May 2, 2012 12:05 pm

Shocked to hear of the initial reports regarding Junior Seau earlier today

He was a fan of UH Warriors for life after June Jones picked up his nephew after all the other Big school gave up on him.

  73. jeezy33 May 2, 2012 12:22 pm

to turn the mood in a positive direction.

UH basketball got commitment from possibly the best guard since Carl English days. Manroop Clair from Canada.

    Guy is for real

  74. mikey May 2, 2012 12:31 pm

To this day I still remember Junior Seau nephew, he basically he had to sit out the whole year.

But very friendly and cordial came up and introduced himself, we talked a bit since he couldn’t practice.

But the following year on the very first team scrimmage he intercepted a pass and ran for TD.

Now there’s a LB for the next 3 – 4 years for Warriors, I said to no one in particular Not many fans were watching that day and Rams too weren’t disappointed in drafting him.

  75. PONO May 2, 2012 12:33 pm

Clair can stroke the ball. HUGE pickup that should help open up the inside for our bigs.

  76. mikey May 2, 2012 12:33 pm

  78. mikey May 2, 2012 12:40 pm

    On our new commit Clair:

Last summer was highlighted by Clairโ€™s break out game in Las Vegas in July with DRIVE, where he dropped 27 points on Duke Commit and McDonalds All-American Rasheed Sulaimon.

This summer, the 6โ€™2 combo guard is wasting no time, leaving his imprint on the circuit in the first week of AAU season. This past weekend, Clair strung together an impressive four games, registering 28 points, followed by 26, 19 and 28 at the NW Premier Spring Showcase.

I like that Clair has some swagger. Here’s a brief exerpt.

[In Vegas, Clair] displayed his superior scoring ability, connecting on seven three-pointers to register 27 points for Drive. Clair put on a show in Vegas and proved to be a lethal weapon, disregarding any defender he had to face.

Clair possesses ultimate confidence in himself and the charisma that is rare to find, especially at the high school level.

Throughout the course of the game, Clair really got under the skin of Duke Commit Rasheed Sulaimon.

    โ€œโ€I hit a shot and I said; youโ€™re going to Duke?โ€

Immediately, Sulaimon addressed this comment and the two continued to exchange words throughout the game.

โ€œIf you canโ€™t guard a guy like me, maybe you should be going to community college,โ€ Clair continued to tease.

Well Stephanie lost 1.6% of her votes so that could be that they are kicking out all the duplicate votes. If you will notice none of the others except for Boccia and Stephaine has changed. Looks like they are keeping an eye on things.

I was so inspired by Gmahoney’s email to the Lowes folks I sent one myself today. A big mahalo to Ms. Bollig of Premier Sports Management for her quick response.

And a big mahalo to Steph, the Wahine Softballers, Coach Coolen and his staff for a team which we can all be so proud of. Stephanie is a very deserving candidate for this award, best of luck to her.

    GO WAHINE!!!

Actually Lowe’s is a nice place to shop.

They don’t have the army of employees that Home Depot has.

but the ones they do have sure are friendly and smile a lot.

I actually bought some nice chain there cheaper than both HD

and City Mill, which surprised me.

mikey…hahaha. old guy beats young guy. nah, nah…we on the same wave length.

this could be a fun team to watch.

one of the key players is not even on scholarship…jace tavita. if he can provide meaningful minutes from the pg position we could be off to a great start. gibber could have the kind of personnel to run up and down the court as he envisioned.

if everyone lives up to their billing we could have a nice team this year and that’s without keith shamburger who has to provided the spark in practice and on the bench this season.

if we don’t get that last scholarship guy he could award it to tavita if he performs.

  133. cheepono May 2, 2012 4:11 pm

old news regarding sjsu and usu getting added to the mwc, but thought this was interesting…

multiple sources said the Broncos are trying to get in the Big West, as well, now that the WAC is falling apart.

…i hope the big west tells em hell no (again). if that happens, then what’s bsu to do?

On another note RIP Junior Seau

  135. al May 2, 2012 4:13 pm

two guys on the bubble are jawato and jefferson. the former because he hasn’t been on the court yet and he needs to get quicker defensively whereas jefferson is a liability down the stretch run because his poor shooting.

i thought that they would be reduced to non-scholarship status this coming fall. but so far the defections have kept them under the “payroll”.

but what if we sign armstead and then blakes makes it through the ncaa clearinghouse afterall???

    cut bait???

  136. al May 2, 2012 4:15 pm

cheepono…i read somewhere that the big west told the broncos to go take their rodeo elsewhere.

on another note, what about by-who? they’ll have to find another place to park, too.

  137. al May 2, 2012 4:19 pm

when chow elevates our level of play and we can either eliminate or lessen the amount of our travel subsidies because we become an attraction…i’d like to see at least the men’s bb team be invited to the mwc free of charge.

yah, i am dreaming of a capacity crowd every saturday at the aloha and again at the ssc on thursdays and saturdays.

that’s right! i forgot about byu’s arrangement as well.

couldn’t byu park their sports in the wcc?

as for bsu, maybe they’ll put their non-fb sports in the sun belt. i’m sure benson would love to have em.

be interesting to see what happens with both of em.

Re #147, I’m really hoping the Big West tells Boise State no thank you. I don’t want UH’s basketball, volleyball, and other non-football teams to have to travel to Idaho again.

Unfortunately the California schools are so desperate for money that when Boise starts waving around all that Big East cash it will be tough for them to say no.

Look what I found on one of Alabama Fan Sites

    http://www.crimsonredsports.com/index.php?topic=8946.165

Seems they did use a computer to automate their votes. The poster who wrote the auto-vote program also said he can make it so that you can vote for everyone but Ricketts. Someone should forward this site to the Lowe’s Marketing/Technical people.

    “SUPERCOACH”

    May 1

“Consider the battlefield nuked and obliterated by 35,000 votes tonight. We now have a 12% lead.

  163. Derek May 2, 2012 7:28 pm

I like Clair already, he’s got that swagger, that confidence, but his name, Manroop, seems a little over the top. Can we just nickname him Manny? And I like his “trash-talking” and his line “If you can’t guard a guy like me, maybe you should go to community college” talking to a Duke commit Rasheed Sulaimon who is an McDonald’s All-American.

The articale said Clair is South Asian from Burnaby, British Columbia. So what nationality is he? That 7’3″ teammate of his at his prep school seems interesting.

    DPK or GMAHONEY:

Did one of you send in the Alabama website to the Lowe’s people?

    http://www.crimsonredsports.com/index.php?topic=8946.165

I noticed that SuperCoach passed his automated program to three or four other people who were also using the program.

Also his program seems to prevent any votes going to Stephanie. I don’t know whether the program diverts votes going to Stephanie to the other candidates or whether it would go to Cassie.

  167. gmahoney May 2, 2012 8:00 pm

Hi DPK! Glad the folks at Lowe’s are keeping it classy at the Senior Class Award. May the best candidate win. Stephanie Ricketts is very deserving and a fan gone wild will ruin it for Bama’s candidate. Can’t lose to lowly Hawaii! How would that look? As I told Mrs. Rickets on Senior Nite, once a Wahine, always a Wahine. Steph, Hawaii is grateful you chose Hawaii.

  168. gmahoney May 2, 2012 8:01 pm

Tom, I can send that link.

  174. Ralph May 2, 2012 8:12 pm

good job gmahoney! if Lowe’s acknowledges your post than that’s their confirmation, otherwise, you may want to follow up and send another one tomorrow and ask for confirmation and ask if they are following up on the ‘Bama voters.

  175. gmahoney May 2, 2012 8:15 pm

I don’t cheat, never did, I vote on my PC, my iPad, my phone. And I encourage others to do so also.

Yes, KK…looking forward to the evening.

#202, PP, you’re so right. We never know when our time will come. Hug your loved ones every day, and never let harsh words be the last words you say. Thanks for the reminder.

  194. PowderPuff May 2, 2012 8:48 pm

Talk about football scholarship dinner…it’s baaack. Well, I think this is the one for Summer Camp coming up on Tuesday, June 26th at Honolulu Country Club. If any Tsaikos want to drop 2 “dollars” each, I can arrange for a table. :). I know, I know…kinda high…but anyway…

Oh, thanks to the Tsaikos who came out to the Spring Fling. I know the wild softball game was going on, but nice to see Chawan, SailorBlue, Janice, sjmacro and myki. Oh, and slugger, jm2375, Kekoa and I believe I saw the lovely Ms. Gmahoney.

Jm, I have to agree, but the Cal game was right up there.

After speaking with University of Hawaii media relations, it was confirmed thru their conversations with the Lowe’s folks that they have CLEARED the softball voting of all ILLEGAL votes.

The percentages you see now, are all clean votes and the fact that Stephanie Ricketts is a large lead at 30+% after Lowe’s cleared the illegal votes from all candidates, it is a testament to how Hawaii fans in Hawaii and on the mainland responded in support of Stephanie Ricketts.

This is fact direct from the people that manage the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award voting.

  223. Old Diver May 2, 2012 9:46 pm

Thanks, gmahoney. Got eight of them, but I won’t be announcing how I have been using them over the past month. For security reasons of course. Trojan horse in the house.

Over 16 people we know of (friends, family of players, and supporters in general) contacted Lowe’s with regards to the voting discrepancy for Cassie Reilly-Boccia.

It appears an Alabama fan was on a message board sharing an illegal script for others to use. It essentially allowed a PC to vote between 40-60 times in one minute. This was provided as evidence to Lowe’s. This explains the vast difference between those clearing their caches or cookies, also not permissible by the voting regulations set by Lowe’s.

Again, the voting percentages you see now are correct after the search of all candidates were done to eliminate and adjust illegal voting techniques.

So if Hawaii fans in the 808 and on the mainland and Australia brought Stephanie to this high number with CLEAN votes, we can keep her up there or push her further ahead!!!

There is something wrong with Apple devices (iPhones and iPads) reading the incorrect #s of Reilly-Boccia in the 40s and Stephanie in the 30s. I noticed the same thing. My MAC at home however reads the correct voting #s.

The correct voting for sure is:

    Valerie Arioto California 19.1%

    Katelyn Boyd Arizona State 3.9%

    Mallory Duran-Sellers Southern Illinois 3.6%

    Julie Fernandez Lehigh 3.6%

    Ashley Hansen Stanford 3.5%

    Stephanie Ricketts Hawaiโ€˜i 30.8%

    Niki Williams Washington 3.5%

    This is neat enjoy

    By Graham Hays

    ESPN.com

Which team has the most dominant pitching combination in the country?

At least by the measure of ERA, it’s not Cal’s All-American duo of Jolene Henderson and Val Arioto, although both rank in the top 20. It’s not Arizona State’s Hillary Bach and Dallas Escobedo, either.

Here’s a hint: Most of us can’t drive to see these two pitch.

    University of Hawai’i

Stephanie Ricketts has Hawaii poised for a return to the NCAA tournament after a one-year hiatus.

If you didn’t know the answer was Hawaii’s Stephanie Ricketts (25-3 and fifth nationally with 1.02 ERA) and Kaia Parnaby (15-2 and fourth nationally with a 1.00 ERA), you aren’t alone. It’s all too easy to forget about No. 14 Hawaii, even though the program has been among the most consistent winners outside of the BCS conferences in recent seasons.

The Rainbow Wahine are at it again. With a core of juniors and seniors who were part of the team that reached the World Series in 2010 and who experienced the low of missing the NCAA tournament last season, No. 14 Hawaii is 40-5 after it swept Fresno State last weekend, a record that includes a win against top-ranked Cal in addition to DePaul and two wins against Florida State. The team that reached Oklahoma City made its mark with the long ball, setting an NCAA single-season record with 158 home runs. The current group has power at the plate, but it excels with the pitching of a senior who wanted to make her own mark (Ricketts’ older sister, Samantha, was an All-American at Oklahoma, as is younger sister Keilani these days) and an Australian junior willing to play her understudy.

“Having Kaia understand that Stephanie was in the program a year and Stephanie would be looked at first, that is something that some egos from some pitchers wouldn’t allow,” coach Bob Coolen said. “But right now, both of them complement each other really well. โ€ฆ It’s a good relationship. They enjoy each other’s company. I’ve had them in my van for three years when we travel together. Nothing ever has come between the two of them. They pick each other up when they need relief, and it’s just been a real good relationship between the two of them.”

Even as the team continues to win and move up the ladder in the human polls, Hawaii’s RPI has dropped in recent weeks. At No. 18 in the most recent release, it could find itself unseeded when the NCAA tournament begins, even if it sweeps Utah State this weekend and runs through the WAC tournament at New Mexico State. Unlike last year, there is no doubt the Rainbow Wahine will be included when the NCAA tournament bracket is revealed, but there is always something to prove for a program that often feels it is out of sight and out of mind for those on the mainland.

“We’re a non-BCS mid-major,” Coolen said. “And that is something that as a coach, you have to get a serious reality check that you need to do something special year in and year out to put yourself in the eyes of the committee. There’s no two ways about that.”

Winning 40 games with two pitchers ranked in the top five nationally in ERA ought to open a few eyes. A regular-season conference title wouldn’t hurt, either.

Just in case you weren’t feeling too old today………

The people who are starting college this fall were born in 1993.

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

The CD was introduced two years before they were born.

They have always had an answering machine.

    They have always had cable.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

    Popcorn has always been microwaved..

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They don’t know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: ‘Where’s the Beef?’, ‘I’d walk a mile for a Camel ‘ or ‘de plane Boss, de plane’.

McDonald’s never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don’t have a clue how to use a typewriter.
