Saturday ramblings

Clarence “Lafu” Tuioti-Mariner is the latest to “retire” from football. He won’t participate in Pro Day. Instead, he is intent on completing work on his bachelor’s degree. Tuioti-Mariner never quite had the career we all envisioned. But he worked hard, was popular and tried to be upbeat. He now tries to help the offensive linemen during unsupervised workouts.

Laupepa Letuli has trimmed down β€” his body and, most noticeably, his hair.

Here’s Oregon State transfer Steven Ikaika Rodenhurst. He said he goes by either Steven or Ikaika.

And happy belated birthday to Nick Rolovich, who turned 30. It’s hard to believe we’re the same age.

I was going to post a picture of the turkey meatloaf I ordered at Gourmet Express in Kahala Mall, but the program says I’ve used up all of my picture space. Maybe next time.

There is something satisfying about seeing those photos of UH athletes on the new turf!

    Happy Birthday Coach Rolo!!!

    Ban you?

    Mojo, watchado?!?!?!?!

  5. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2009 9:01 am

The only bad thing about the new turf, or any FieldTurf-like surface, is the granules that get into your shoe. I tell you. You do an onfield interview at Aloha Stadium, and four days later, you’re still shaking out the little granules. Players try to tape their shoes, but it doesn’t help. It’s like running (in tennis shoes) on the beach.

    Mojo:
Did you make my wife sing alone in drama class again ?

  7. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2009 9:04 am

It only took her 25 years to forgive you.
She’s still mad at me because I didn’t give her my jacket at the symphony. Symphony? Yeah, don’t ask.

  8. SteveM February 21, 2009 9:09 am

    Good morning ST and everyone!

You, Wena and WarriorMojo singing in drama class… ?

  9. Garret February 21, 2009 9:12 am

Best wishes to Lafu…it is great that he’ll get his degree!

  10. SteveM February 21, 2009 9:15 am

My congrats to Tuioti-Mariner and all athletes who attain their degrees. That is a worthy accomplishment!

  11. Garret February 21, 2009 9:15 am

MSNBC has an article about the budget situation at UH.

“We are expecting to cut about $31 million out of general fund cuts total of $725 million, but we have other sources of revenue,” UH President David McClain said.

McClain is banking on the return of overhead from research grants, from tuition and some help from the government’s stimulus package.

Dwindling revenues from UH games is also a worry threatening a fragile sports budget.

The UH Foundation eliminated 18 positions this month. The foundation’s endowment dropped 21 percent during the last half of the year.

Various UH campuses are drawing up lists of possible places to cut. Among the options being floated are furloughing deans and administrators.

I can only imagine what it must have been or must be like to play ball on the domoturf at Les Murakami Stadium. I remember players complained the granules would get into their jerseys and just itch the hell out of them.

But as I was passing by Ching Field I saw a HUGE pile of that stuff near the fence…. I contemplated leaping into it to see if it would hurt.

We all know of the financial issues Jim Donovan and the entire department along with the teams would have to face when the economy turned sour, but something about seeing it on the front page yesterday left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Sometimes you think you know, but then you stare at the financial figures in front of you and you wonder how JD wakes up every morning.

    Great decision by Tuioti-Mariner.

Also like Letuli’s choice to “lock” it down.
A little more “DL” for all the OL guys might be a good thing.
Who knows? Maybe the officials will subliminally figure, “Hey, these guys ain’t so bad.”

    Happy Birthday Coach Rolo!

  29. letsgowarriors February 21, 2009 9:29 am

i cant wait to see what Shaw can do with Letuli and Estes. and i hope he can improve Kia’s play. if he stays long enough, he got a good core of the inside with: tuiasosopo, maafala and makainai. now just gotta land the OTs, go get crabb and hatchie.

  33. WarriorMojo February 21, 2009 9:37 am

Sorry, back from getting tickets for Journey. When I was trying to access Warrior Beat earlier, I kept getting a message that my IP had been banned for spamming this blog “in particular”. So when I finally got through….

Pepa, stretch those hammies! This is your year to DOMINATE! Make it happen. I am very excited to see what magic Coach Shaw can perform with our O-line.

Hope to see you all at k-call tonight, but my family got that flu bug that’s been going around so I might have to play Nurse Mojo. Hah, scary thought.

  34. d1ε³Ά February 21, 2009 9:37 am

I think, with any job that’s worthwhile, patience is the key.
Writing isn’t coaching, but I worked for a lot of small publications and covered a lot of tough events before getting hired at The Tizer.
And even there, I was a part-timer for more than five years. I was passed over by a lot of people (mostly from the Mainland). One guy who was hired ahead of me was Ed Kennedy, who didn’t know any sports. He once forced himself to watch a golf telecast so he could learn about sports coverage. But back then the managing editor didn’t promote any local guys. After the ME left, then things changed. The part-timers β€” me, Dave Koga, Bart Asato β€” were promoted to full time. Koga is now in charge of online content, Asato is the assistant sports editor. Kennedy got canned several years ago.
    Patience.

  54. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2009 10:24 am

That’s the one good thing about our paper now. It believes in diversity, and it offers opportunities for locally raised journalists. That wasn’t the case 15 years ago.

Concerning the budget crisis at the athletic department. I remember when HF said he did not go to the legislature to ask for funding while he was AD because upper campus was in charge of lobbying for funds. Well this stepping on toes just sounded stupid. The upper campus mandates the athletic department be self sufficient but did not allow them to lobby on their own for funding. These ivory tower decisions make no sense. Makes sense I guess since they are all somewhat connected as DPK mentioned.

I see my ear, nose, and throat specialist once every six months to check up on a massive operation I had about six years ago. As a result of this I no longer can swim because the operation pretty much opened up my ear canal in my right ear and I have ZERO hearing on that side, but it was worth it considering the alternative…

Hey, good to see you again, brew808!

Mmm, Gourmet Express. If that sounds familiar to anyone, it’s because it’s owned by a Tsai-ko lurker’s family:

    http://warriorbeat.honadvblogs.com/2008/06/11/kamehameha-day/

I said it yesterday, and el guapo said it this morning: Stutz getting his Master’s degree can only help him in the future. If he has any serious aspirations of becoming a head coach or administrator, whether it be at St. Louis, UH, or any place else, then that degree will help him get it. I just hope that Mack has communicated that to him, and that both parties are on the same page.

  75. SteveM February 21, 2009 11:25 am

Hi brew808 — long time! Me exited about tonight? Nah–just the same-o same-o when you assemble certain Tsingers together. But explain to me the the concept of “critical mass” and what happens when that is attained?

I know the song, “We Are Family” but am not positive if and when we sang it a Karaoke Call. Sounds like one for Liz as the lead Tsinger.

BTW, Long Time UH Fan is looking doubtful tonight for health reasons, but he requests his old blog buddy sing Misora Hibari’s Kawa no Nagare. I recall las vegas saying he doesn’t do Hibari (female), but maybe one of his gals tonight….

  98. Committed Road Warrior February 21, 2009 12:12 pm

    Howzit everyone!

I just got through watching last night’s baseball game and I must say that UH ran into one buzzsaw through 7 innings. The prospect of that Irvine pitcher getting the no-no looked really possible until Van Doornum got that bloop single to lead off the 8th.

Irvine is a good team. You’d like to go into a series thinking “sweep”, but when dealing with a team like this, I’d be just as happy getting a split or taking 3 out of 4. We’ll see.

I suspect Kazz (or our other Tsaiko baseball experts) are already en route to the stadium.

  99. Rob25 February 21, 2009 12:13 pm

Condolences to the Walter family on the loss of their daughter. Thank you for your sacrifice and her service to our country.

Frank told me that the battalion is taking it pretty hard. He said that it was a bad day and the weather is “badder” to lighten the situation a little. Seriously, it’s very sad to lose someone so young.

So who’s going to the baseball game today?

    Baseball and basketball BABY!!!!

The “Eaters” are a better team on the baseball field and we’ve got our work cut out for us this weekend, BUT let’s see them pull that crap on the court!

    FINAL
    Basketball Bows – 67
    UC Irvine “Eaters” – 51

Congrats to Lafu in his decison to study hard and earn his degree come may 2009.

Happy Birfday to Coach Rollo and many more to come. Met his wife at the Nov 2008 function at SSC – very nice lady. Rollo’s Dad got us a special autographed picture of Rollo, through a mutual friend, and promised that anything Mrs A-House wanted from Rollo to let him know – maybe special invitation to functions?

I had to stop myself from commenting about how young the girl from Frank’s battalion was. We have, and have had lots of youngsters that age participating in our World Wars.

It’s always a shame to see a young life taken so far away from home. We continue to pray for Frank’s safe homecoming Rob. God Bless him and his troops.,

May good fortune be with you
May your guiding light be strong
    Build a stairway to heaven
With a prince or a vagabond

And may you never love in vain
And in my heart you will remain
    Forever young, forever young

And when you finally fly away
Ill be hoping that I served you well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime
    No one can ever tell

    But whatever road you choose
Im right behind you, win or lose
    Forever young, forever young

my final take on the stutz1 stuff…

since i am not privileged to have been there when stutz1 and coach mack first sat down it is hard for me to past judgment upon either party. at this point, it has become he said, you said, who said, did he say that, and the like.

no telling what were the exact words that day, yesterday, today, or tomorrow. so, i am not qualified to say if stutz1 is getting a raw deal because i don’t know the deal.

i can say that he has been given a great opportunity to get in the door of the college coaching career path. boy, if i could get an education and paid, coupled with a chance to enter a field that some of us have done for 20 years on a gratis basis, it would be too good to be true.

lets remember that college football/athletics is big business and not high school. as such, ever decision is important. mack had little time to assemble a coaching team last year, now with the exodus of two he has had the time to pick n choose. these guys will help mold the future. stutz1 is a part of that future too.

in the business world, one gets paid for his experience and track record. stutz1’s time will come, sometimes we gotta tow the line before we get to reap the rewards.

small steps, it takes small steps to achieve great heights.

    …nuff said.

  109. brew808 February 21, 2009 12:58 pm

Tough loss for Carolina Blue, but it is … just a game….

My condolences to the Sevey and Walter families for their respective losses. (My commentary:) Wow, what a contrast – Bob Sevey was such an accomplished, renown public figure. For the Walters, their daughter was so young, and brave, serving and sacrificing for her country…. And yet in both cases, to the families and friends… still a significant loss….

  110. addahknowjoe February 21, 2009 1:01 pm

No word could truly ever comfort the loss a loved one in times of war. It’s difficult to comprehend the reason why anyone would voluntarily put themselves in harms way for the better of us all. There’s no reset button that many would like to believe. It is the ultimate sacrifice one could ever put forth.

I’ve never met Cwislyn. What I do know about her is she will never have the chance to experience the life we take for granted everyday. She will never see this up coming football season. She will never have the chance to go to college. She will never text and gossip with her friends. She will never have the chance to fall in love, get married, have children, join and ask life questions on MLM, blog here with us, have and watch her grandchildren grow up.

I ask each and every one of you to stop for a moment and close your eyes. Take a moment and simply reflect on what you’re doing right now. Then look at the life you’ve lived that brought you to this moment. Then quietly realize that the very opportunity you just had to reflect on your life was made possible by the sacrifice of those named Cwislyn.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Walter Ohana.

  111. FloridaTed February 21, 2009 1:07 pm

    Al,

I agree with you, who knows what’s really going on with the Stutz situation. I don’t understand what the problem is anyway. He would be crazy to give up his Masters right now, just to get an assistance job. Once he has his Masters, many more doors will open for him.

Maybe that’s the deal with BigMack and Stutz, finish your Masters and we’ll work you in?

  112. Rob25 February 21, 2009 1:07 pm

    Well said A-joe!!

  113. FloridaTed February 21, 2009 1:09 pm

Condolences to the the Walter family.

  116. Rob25 February 21, 2009 1:25 pm

I wonder if weather was in any way a factor. Frank said that they are having really bad wind and sand storms, which affect visibility and add more risk. Not to speculate, but I wonder if there was an accident.

  117. Ralph February 21, 2009 1:35 pm

well said and written a/Joe…..condolences to the Walter ohana, we all share and feel your sorrow and pain for Cwislyn, and when our names are called we shall join her and rejoice….aloha

  118. Kekoa February 21, 2009 1:41 pm

Very well said A-Joe. We spoke of this not too long ago.

  119. Garret February 21, 2009 1:43 pm

Condolences to the Walter family. Words are inadequate to express the sadness I feel every time I hear about a tragedy regarding one of our soldiers.

  120. Garret February 21, 2009 1:44 pm

    addahknowjoe,

Thank you for writing so much of what I and many others feel.

  121. Garret February 21, 2009 1:48 pm

I agree that getting his Masters degree and getting the experience as a GA is going to be good for Stutz1. I do hope that UH take less than 2 more years to resolve his situation–he should be getting his Masters degree next year, as it should take 2 years to get it instead of 3.

Then, if UH doesn’t do anything after 2 years, there is a possibility that he can’t be a GA for a 3rd season (NCAA rules). If he does serve as a GA for 3 years, then after that season UH has to give him a full-time assistant spot or shove him out the door to look for some other school that will give him a job. If there is nobody voluntarily leaving, then UH would be faced with the choice of getting rid of Stutz1 or firing some other coach.

  122. brew808 February 21, 2009 2:03 pm

    Ha! I like that… Stutz1, and Stutz2!!! πŸ˜€ 😯 πŸ˜†

  123. Ralph February 21, 2009 2:19 pm

news from the combine, crabtree isn’t 6’3, more like 6’1….will be interesting to read about the measurable stats of the players and compared them to pre-combine hype….

  124. brew808 February 21, 2009 2:41 pm

I wonder if any player ever showed up taller, bigger, or stronger than rumored…. πŸ˜€

  125. Jason February 21, 2009 2:45 pm

    SteveM: Nope, riding TheBus.

Ralph: Eh, he’s got long enough arms, so I wouldn’t be worried about that. It’s the injury and the lack of a 40 time that’s going to hurt his stock. Still, he’s gotta be the top WR off the board. He’ll more than likely slip, but not too much.

Izzy is looking for other work. Difficult to find jobs in todays economy.

I figured with four gas grills we would be able to keep up with demand. But those haoles were amazed at the taste of the product and kept sending their friends over. I should have known better since our lu’aus always sold out — the best and most famous Norwegian thing to eat is lutefisk. Gross! Exactly like fish-flavored jello. Ugh.

  136. wafan February 21, 2009 3:30 pm

  165. Jason February 21, 2009 4:05 pm

  191. Ralph February 21, 2009 5:59 pm

Jason called me something close to grumpy-to negative about his beloved UH basketball team…He said give them time, and I said there are only 5 games left, how much time do you want them to develop team chemistry, the season is almost over…

  192. warriorfanny February 21, 2009 6:01 pm

Steven Rodenhurst is a 2006 Kamehameha grad, meaning he has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
Presuming he redshirts in 2009, he will have one year to play in a warrior uni?

As for Stuzz, MAC has to increase his chances of winning by bringing on board coaches who can help immediately.
    If Stuzz Qs–bring him on.
But he must earn his appointment.

MAC has another year to decide… let water seek its own level.

Lou Holtz frequently quips that he hires coaches that make him look good and fires those that dont.

It’s GM’s butt in the sling and while I can think of some on MAC’s staff that do not Q–that is another issue altogether best saved for another day.

  193. brew808 February 21, 2009 6:01 pm

Ralph – I would call you Frank! But then it would get confusing….. πŸ˜€ πŸ™„ πŸ˜†

Brew coach nash has a three year contract, in the past, with one year remaining the AD rolled over the contract automatically….his team is struggling this year to win in the wac, he has no seniors this year, so what you see is what we get next season…he may have 1 scholie to offer, so does the AD offer an extension in advance or wait to his final year plays out…we saw what happened with June, waiting to long…tough call…

  195. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:10 pm

warriorfanny players have 5 years to compete in 4 seasons…so if Rodenhurst did not redshirt at wherever he started his fb, he will have 3 to compete in two…

  196. brew808 February 21, 2009 6:11 pm

I believe players get 5 yrs to play 4. So a 2006 HS grad should have either 3/2 or 3/3 remaining. Of course, I’m not a mathematician or statistician…. 😯

  197. brew808 February 21, 2009 6:14 pm

Oh oh, sounding and thinking like Ralph…. Okay, regarding the aforementioned sport – … flush….. IMHO. 😯

  198. warriorfanny February 21, 2009 6:18 pm

    Ralph Wrote:

“Jason called me something close to grumpy-too negative about his beloved UH basketball team…He said give them time, and I said there are only 5 games left, how much time do you want them to develop team chemistry, the season is almost over…”

At least Jason is not calling you out 4 not being a true fan becuz you make criticism.
    LOL.
Hawaii is loaded-up with this type of neophite-wannabee-a-warriorfan-mentality…that’s Y hermie lasted so long…2 much apathy and not enuff scrutiny….dittos with Bolla…et al…eh, how about Pat Charity πŸ™‚

  199. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:18 pm

bottom 7th, UH down by 1- last inning in doubleheader

  200. brew808 February 21, 2009 6:20 pm

Again, IMHO … guard play is essential in bball … especially in the college game. It doesn’t matter how good the other players might be if they can’t get the rock in quality scoring/shooting situations. And another thing… Move your feet! 😯

  201. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:21 pm

Pat is 1 and 2 this season….the key is recruiting…got to have the eye for talent and mold them into a team…

  202. warriorfanny February 21, 2009 6:24 pm

Ralph thanx for the tip…Im aware of the rules:
    so Rodenhurst grads in 2006–06–first year (RS @ OSU)–’07 #2–08 #3–09 #4 (RS @ HAW) and ’10 #5.
Im saying becz he is a transfer from OSU he prolly will sit out 2009, leaving him with ONE year to complete his 5 year eligibility of play in 2010.

  203. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:26 pm

all the turnovers by the wahines is primarily coaching- its their sets and spacing that contributes to the poor passing lanes and thus, turnovers…any poor decision on passing comes from the lack of discipline and coaching during practice when they need to have proper ball movement to give them better opportunities to pass the ball or shoot.

  204. brew808 February 21, 2009 6:27 pm

Okay, I’ll play. How come we haven’t heard of this 6′-1″ Allie Patterson before? It sounded like she had a very strong game last night. There might be some talent there…. they just have to want to play together, and with the right leadership. And, remember it is suppose to be fun! IMHO πŸ™„

  205. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:27 pm

bb loses after first two batters reach base safely…..no clutch hitting

  206. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:30 pm

Irvine is ninth rated, so had we done better and won 2 or the three games played more people would be excited about warriors bb and plan on seeing them this season…but losing 3 in a row and not having any punch, the mindset, same O. just watch them on tv whenever and if junk, change the station…now I wonder what Jason and Kazz gonna say…but this is the season opener! so if you want fans, you got to win…

  207. Ralph February 21, 2009 6:31 pm

off to Karaoke to meet Las Vegas altho I can’t sing or hum a tune…

  208. brew808 February 21, 2009 6:34 pm

It’s rumored that the former AD also enjoyed karaoke! It’s only rumored since he never got past the warm up…. “me me me me….” 😯 😈 😯

  209. Pauoa Boy February 21, 2009 6:35 pm

Watched basketball game against Fresno St. on ESPN the other day and although there is a crap load of improvement still needed, the team actually looks somewhat decent. Saw alot of patience, spacing, and movement on offense which was lacking previously. Defense is still solid for the most part although we really need to recruit a big banger down low. Paul Campbell, Bill Amis and even that big Block Balocka are too weak down low and at times get man-handled in the paint. Regardless, I’m glad we have a guy like Rod Flemings, cause eventhough he’s the most talented offensively, I love him for his desire to rebound the ball! Also, I’m glad Hiram Thompson is playing much smarter handling the ball eventhough I think Nitoto is a better overall player.

  210. el guapo February 21, 2009 6:37 pm

Took a look at Oregon State’s 2008 media guide and Ikaika is not listed, so could 2008 be his transfer year, then 2 to play 2?

  211. Pauoa Boy February 21, 2009 6:42 pm

Sorry catching up from previous stuffs…

Finally got to watch the video of my boy Chad Owens. Princess and ST, you guys are a frikkin hilarious duo. Anyway, glad to see my boy Chad working hard to live out his dream. Kind of had to laugh seeing him speak cause of how much he’s matured throughout the years. Remember Booth Park Days ballin it up at the gym, cracking jokes, etc… Anyway, hope he makes it back into the NFL…Atlanta Falcons or Detroit Lions? For those of you who don’t know about his Hawaii Football School on Sundays at Booth Park go check out his website at http://www.hawaiifootballschool.com

  212. Pauoa Boy February 21, 2009 6:45 pm

So now that recruiting is kind of done for the most part. Any word on what has happened with guys like… Whitley Fehoko, Jesse Williams, Jack Sula, Kainoa LaCount, and anyone else who is supposedly going to be playing for us???

  213. Pauoa Boy February 21, 2009 6:47 pm

Anyone know how Mouton, Veikune, and Ingram are doing at the combine? Also, when is Hawaii’s Pro-Day in Carson happening and any word on who will most likely attend???

  214. al β„’ February 21, 2009 7:29 pm

just back from a long, long afternoon with the boss. whew.

i see some folks were taking shots at me. hahaha. so be it.

pboy; from what the little birdie has said….

jesse williams is awaiting the final word from the nc2a. he has graduated from australia’s version of hs, but, it has not yet been accepted by the ncaa. he may end up in jc.

sula and lacount need to complete some academic stuff and may arrive during the summer. lacount would now be a walk-on.

no word on fehoko whether he is in school or planning to enroll later is still a question mark. he would have been a walk-on. i hope he didn’t expect a scholie.

  215. jm2375 February 21, 2009 7:30 pm

Watched the BB game the other nite on ESPN ….great to see Hiram got his legs back….Go Warriors !!!!

  219. al β„’ February 21, 2009 8:07 pm

ikaika rodehurst….interesting story. he was a non-roster guy last year, so one would suppose that he is eligible to play this year. he would have two years to play. hopefully, he will be a cinderella story for us and him.

so, we supposedly have two more scholies available, depending upon how we juggle the allocations. interesting or we could just save for next year or make this year easier to figure out.

we picked up quite a few walk-ons and transfers unexpectedly which should really boost our team up. quite a number on the dline side of the ball too.

  220. al β„’ February 21, 2009 8:09 pm

i think nitoto has developed immensely over the past few games. his confidence is up, he’s taking it to the hoop and finishing better. why he even made a few outside shots.

  221. brew808 February 21, 2009 8:09 pm

alski – Why are you someplace taking shots of your own? 😯 πŸ˜†

    Re: Baseball Team

Sucks that they’ve lost the first 3 games of the series, but I can’t help but think that a couple hops the other way and they could have had the opportunity to split the series. I also think that aside from the solo Arizona State game and the Fresno series, Irvine’s probably gonna be the best team we face this year.

The starting rotation looks fine for now and I’m hoping they’ll improve as the season progresses. Can’t wait for Alexander to make his return! Defense looks fine too aside from the routine play issues that may be resolved as the players get more games under their belt (dusting off cobwebs). The offense can use some oomph, though.

My only worry is if they go up to Minneapolis next week and get swept. The possibility of an 0-8 start could start to rattle some nerves and result in a loss of confidence on the part of the team. This happens and the rest of the out-of-conference slate may be at risk. I still like our chances once conference play starts, though.

  232. Garret February 21, 2009 9:14 pm

Miami is looking at drafting Percy Harvin because they want a WR who can run after the catch…didn’t they notice that Bess did that at UH *and* at Miami last year?

Harvin disclosed that the Dolphins are showing him enough interest to bring him down for one of their 25 workouts. Details will be worked out after he leaves the combine, where he only benched (20 reps) and plans to run the 40.

Could their interest be a smoke screen? Absolutely. But could it also be genuine?

There’s a possibility if you consider this team’s needs. The Dolphins have plenty of young promising receivers in Greg Camarillo, Ted Ginn Jr., Brandon London and Davone Bess. But the one thing the Dolphins lack is a guy who specializes in making run-after-catch plays.

Harvin averaged 16.1 yards on his 40 catches last season for the Gators.

  233. Garret February 21, 2009 9:17 pm

Adam and Sol aren’t the only productive players that were excluded from the NFL Combine…this Oregon player really seems to have earned an invitation also. The same “measurables” that the NFL scouts use to downgrade UH players seems to have hurt him too.

Reed started at defensive end for Oregon for three seasons and was a two-time All-Pacific-10 selection. Pac-10 offensive linemen voted him as the 2008 Morris Trophy winner as best defensive lineman in the conference.

Reed is Oregon’s all-time sacks leader with 29 Β½ and finished fourth in the NCAA with 13 sacks last fall. He also finished ninth in the nation in tackles for losses with 20. Fifty-two of his 148 career tackles were for losses. He also was an academic All-American.

But his sterling college portfolio wasn’t enough to garner Reed an invitation to the combine. Seven of his Oregon teammates are here – but not Reed.

Reed knows why he was passed over. Oregon listed him at 6-2, 250 pounds. But NFL scouts measured him at 6-1 Β½, 247 pounds in January at the East-West Shrine Game, where he was a last-minute roster addition.

Honor student in a Colorado high school didn’t realize that she had had 3 fake rifles (used by her young Marines drill team) in her trunk. She parked her SUV on campus, violating a Colorado law (passed after the Columbine tragedy) that calls for expulsion if any student brings anything on campus that resembles a firearm (even a water pistol can get you kicked out of school!):
    http://www.denverpost.com/ci_11693756?source=rss

Thankfully the school superintendent decided to overlook the law and let her go back to school. I think that by then the student had been suspended for 10 days, but at least she can finish the school year and graduate:

mac has treated him good. he understands that he has to give 2 years ga, he loves uh
    he loves mac
    he loves where he is
    etc, etc, etc,

stutz understands where he is …………………………. he knows he is making a sacrifice for future ……. we dont have to worry. he is still tough as nails as we know him. if UH is in his future, that is his dream. but it is all g folks. and stutz2 is doing well and expects to compete this spring.

  257. wafan February 22, 2009 4:59 am

I will keep it down this morning since people are still sleeping off the KK.

So, a peaceful and quiet Sunday to all.

  258. Richie February 22, 2009 5:02 am

roja that–I’m glad to hear that about stutz. I think part of the problem might be that we now have Brian Smith being incorporated into other duties on offense and we still have George Lumpkin whose duties are still a mystery to me. In essence, we now have two coaches on the staff who are probably not absolutely critical and it boils down to a numbers game. We still do not have a running backs coach and we could certainly use a wide receivers coach (that could be stutz in another year) so that Coach Ron Lee can focus on being an offensive coordinator. We all love Coach Mack, but sometimes you just gotta make the tough call.

  259. bighilofan2 February 22, 2009 5:51 am

Coach has already made 2 tough calls in the past two months without being mean about things. and he’s made 2 excellent hires, and we can say that without playing any game yet.

and he’s giving a young oline coach, a chance to grow better at UH. and our hero Stutz1 a chance too. i no like waste time anymo, good to know its all G with Stutz1 an his faimly.

Was told that Chile was the world’s biggest producer (farmer?) of Atlantic salmon in its fish farms.

One of the big worries was that some of them might escape and interbreed and louse up the genes of the Pacific salmon.

Interesting also because Chile’s borders only the Pacific.

Sorry we left early last night but wanted to say hello to Las Vegas and SteveM, thanks again for the invitation. Glad to see Kekoa and Diane there and that she is on the mend.

My nomination for a Tsaiko Tsinger award in the category of Pop Music is – (please hold your applause until all the nominees are announced) – Mr. Waipio Gentry, D-1!

In the “Omigod it’s Opera!” category, we have Mei Ling in a tie with LizK.

The entire cast of Tsaiko’s are up for the Country Music nomination.

The entire LV Ohana has dominated the International Music category nomination.

We’ll have more nominations after this brief message about mental health…
