Round 2
The Warriors yesterday had their second scrimmage of spring training. They ran 54 plays, with the offense doing well in the first half and the defense dominating in the second.
The good: DC Thom Kaumeyer is meeting his goal of building depth in personnel and schemes. The wolf defense allows the Warriors to play four linebackers, including two on the line of scrimmage. The tactic created a pass rush and, often, hurried the offense out of rhythm. DE Beau Yap is emerging as an edge rusher. Kaumeyer praised d-line coach Lewis Powell, noting: “Coach Powell is doing a fantastic job of getting them off the ball. That way we’re kind of playing on their side of the line of scrimmage. Then we can react to that.” By resting DE Paipai Falemalu, other DEs are getting work, such as Desmond Dean (who recovered a fumble) and Siaki Cravens. The way things are going, Tavita Woodard might be at TE the rest of the spring. The offense had its moments. Ben Clarke, who is the No. 1 center, is having a good spring. RBs Joey Iosefa and John Lister are a nice 1-2 punch. And David Graves is distancing himself as the No. 1 QB. He completed his first five passes, for 80 yards, and finished his part of the scrimmage with a 29-yard scoring pass to Scott Harding.
The not-so-good: There was inconsistency on both sides of the ball. The defense gave up big third-down plays in the first half; the offense struggled against the defensive pressure in the second half. Depth on the o-line continues to be a concern. LG Chauncy Winchester-Makainai has been bothered by back issues, and OT Sean Shigematsu still is adjusting after completing rehab from knee surgery. The kickers had difficulty with their accuracy yesterday, but no problems with the distance.
The twists: The Warriors are doing very well on fly sweeps, with Trevor Davis becoming an accomplished runner on end-around plays. He had a 16-yard run yesterday. And on a broken play, punter Alex Dunnachie completed a pass to Woodard.
Player to watch: Mike Sellers is having a good camp, at several positions. Yesterday, he was the No. 1 right safety. With his history at nickelback and corner, Sellers has the skill to play in the box or match up against an inside receiver.
Quote: Sometimes “they end up going through the motions because they’re unsure of themselves,” HC Norm Chow said. “I tell them: ‘I don’t care if you’re making a mistake if you’re going 100 percent.’ We’re trying to get that squared away.”
Up next: There will be a scrimmage tomorrow at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium. It also will serve as a beta for how the Warriors will travel.
* * * * *
Winchester-Makainai has been wearing No. 54 recently instead of his usual No. 62. The reason? He is the tester for the new material that will be used for this coming season’s jerseys. The demo jerseys only come in certain numbers.

While awaiting my iPhone (no pressure, Scott), here are some slightly focused pictures of Warrior alumni.
Laupepa Letuli, now a musician, recently returned from a tour in Japan:
* * * * *
Former UH defensive tackle Keala Watson is Nanakuli’s JV head coach. He also teaches digital media. Watson and his wife are expecting their second child next month:
* * * * *
Former UH offensive lineman Aaron Kia is a busy man. He is taking classes toward a master’s degree, coaching at Walnut High, working as an EMT and, next weekend, will be playing in the Rose Bowl. He is a member of the Los Angeles Heat football team, which consists of firefighters and EMTs. Proceeds of the game go to an organization helping children who have suffered burns.
And in his spare time, Kia designs shoes.
Who is number 79?

Enjoy the scrimmages, Maui folks. Come out to support the team.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
ST -Thanks for the good-bad-indifferent.
Don’t forget to support Stephanie!

Really concerned about O-line depth. I hope we get help over the summer.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Was Na Koa disappointed or happy with the results of the fund raiser?

Good morning everyone!
Sounds like the Maui folks and visitors are in for a good practice and scrimmage tomorrow. Then whitey’s Tsai-ko Moo Call at Tiffany’s at 12:30 pm.
howzit going 808

kope check, voted check, check check oops that pool talk
side bar, ran into one of my old player yesterday, has a son on the warrior team, other son is graduating from KHS may walk on but has offers from other places. we talked about his son and the new Chow era, lots of positives to report. Jeff was an all ILH and State ol selection on our first Pac5 Prep Bowl team.
Go all out, every play.
HC Norm Chow said. “I tell them: ‘I don’t care if you’re making a mistake if you’re going 100 percent.’
Go Warriors !!!
Bryson:
It wasn’t intended that way, but after reading it, it looked worse in print, so I took it out. It would take a while to explain his comment.
Stephen,
Thanks for clarifying I’m glad that I wasn’t the only person that kind of raised an eyebrow when reading the comments…
are there any stats from this scrimmage like the last one?
David Graves: 8 of 14 for 124 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int.
Jeremy Higgins: 1 of 6 for 10 yards.
Ikaika Woolsey: 0 of 3.
Alex Dunnachie: 1 of 1 for 15 yards.
lol, “Honolulu Police bomb squd helps Maui disarm grenade”, i don’t think the SA breaking news staff have spell check.
lol, ok somebody corrected it. good-eye.
growing pains for the Warriors, how long will it last until there is a level of comfort?
Couch potato..
I’m not sure you want a level of comfort coming out of spring practice. I think a level of familiarity is what you shoot for and give the players the rest of spring and summer to close in on that level of comfort before entering fall camp.
Hey ST, interesting to hear about Chauncy’s work as the beta tester. Does this mean that the team is getting new uni design for the fall, or is it just the material?
Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy Aloha Friday.
Have fun tomorrow on Maui to those attending the scrimmage. Wish I could go.
GO WAHINE!
GO BOWS!
Hello, Nice icons! I noticed that the titles for “user_thief” & “user_thief_baldie” should be switched.
We are a group of volunteers and starting a brand new scheme in our community. Your site offered us with useful information to paintings on. You’ve performed an impressive activity and our entire community can be grateful to you.
wait a minute, not the blogger. semantics. when i’m familiar with something i’m comfortable with it. like a 9mm glock.
Someone call me?
Ok, false alarm.
Good morning Tsaikos and tomorrow is g day on Maui. Yeah. The Maui Moo Call will be at Tiffany’s on Lower Main Street at 12:30pm. Our table will probably be in the back side of the restaurant. If not sure when entering Tiffany’s, just ask for where the UH Football Fans section. No need invitation, just come and meet our Tsaikos family.
It’s just going to be new material.
Design will be the same.
Was it bomb squad or bomb squid?
I was never good at Wheel of Fortune.
da warriors transition appears to be getting better and it wil be vely, vely interesting to see when fall camp opens. keep up da good work warriors.
don’t know why they call it a bomb squad since most times you only see one person manipulating the red wire, or is that the green wire, or the white one?
i’d like to buy a black wire Pat.
Howzit, everyone!
Wow! All kinds of news tidbits today! Jus’ like one bag of mochi crunch! Awe man… wish I had some mochi crunch!
Anyways, you all have a great weekend! And no fo’get… keep the votes coming for Stephanie.
Go, Wahine!
Go, ‘Bows!
Or.. what about that puffed rice stuff that used to come in that big, white bucket at Long’s? What was da name of dat stuff? Um…
Re: Uni material
Thanks for the info, ST.
Na Wahine up 4-0, top 3, Iwata with a 3 run HR in the 1st, and Robinson with a solo shot in the top 3.
Thanks for the updates, Ralph. Keep ’em coming!
ST- Was the offense running the Pro set against the Wolf D? How does the Wolf D stand up against the spread?
Prolly not well.
I’d love to see the D be able to effectively run any alignment against any scheme posed to them; be dominate to where they dictate the game.
Top of 6th, with two outs, Enrique pinch hitting for Buchanan. RBI single, Robinson scores. 5-0 UH, Majam flies out for 3rd out.
Yes appreciate the updates!
Now this is bugging me…
Was the puffed rice stuff in the white tubs from Long’s called “okoshi”? Had like little pieces of peanuts mixed in too? Man… maybe I should at least make some spam-something tonight.
Go, Wahine! Get my mind off of back-home snacks!
Top of 7th. Iwata solo HR. UH 6-0 off 8 hits.
Headed to bottom of 7th. UNR’s last chance today down 6-0.
Wes’side Warrior…toong mai.
If you structure every opponents offense to run this way, the Wolf D will be successful all the time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_vvI26NnwE
okoshi in japan
toong mai in china
teri spam musubi with a layer of furikake….mmmm
PAU.
UH 6-0 over Nevada.
Now 10-2 in conference still at the #1 spot.
Good day for Stephanie Ricketts on the shut out, Jessica Iwata, Sarah Robinson, and Jocelyn Enrique on their RBIs.
Since you guys posted “Business handled…” Here’s something that I can’t get out of my head:

Bravo Wahine!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Congrats to Stephanie Ricketts as she is now tied with UH Circle of Honore inductee and softball icon Brooke Wilkins with 32 career shutouts!
yeh! Na Wahine win. congrats to the gals.
51…that’s great company.
let’s see how long it takes the softball score to appear in the breaking news section.
congrats wahines
where is da celebration taking place?
CP,
Team is 30 something and 4 and the only nationally-ranked team at UH right now. BUT… (fill in the blank)
Don’t you know how this ‘game’ is played?
They sing songs and spin tales of “it’s just a women’s sport…”
40 years later, from 300K females participating in organized sports to now over 3 million… still NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED in the eyes of some… some that are many.
UH is on it today!
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2012/4/20/SB_0420121622.aspx?path=softball
The two teams square off in a doubleheader tomorrow to conclude the three-game series. The first pitch of the opener is at 1:00 p.m, 10AM HST.
now who will start the first game tomorrow?
good to see the breaking news section updated the erupting volcano news in mexico. at least they are keeping us informed of the Mayan activity. 🙄
Congrats to the Wahine!!
GO BOWS!
CP – if past history is any indication, it won’t.
Did they really need to put that story about Moron Palin in the Breaking News section? She’s had her 15 minutes. Make her go away.
CP,
Don’t forget about the weird killer disease in Vietnam.
i like Palin, she says “okole”. 😆
heaven forbid that disease makes it’s way to Hawaii via Pho.
Way to go Wahine.
Ricketts = money
Iwata = supergirl
Good to see former Warriors being successful.
Uhhh…
nah, THIS is a moron.

Once people start talking politics, the conversation get ugly. Too bad, as a nation we’ve gotten to this point.
best to stick to the subject of Warrior athletics and keep a happy face.
Great job Wahine!
no radio need softball update
D1 🙂 here here!!
Congratulations to the Softbow Wahines. Excellent.
Box score and play-by-play; Hawaii @UNR.

Aaron Kia, spreading the Aloha! That’s priceless. I am glad that so many of our former Warriors are still giving back to their communities. The way i see it, these guys certainly deserved their scholarships toward a higher education and have returned the gesture many time over.
Aloha…finally pau with some yard work and I agree with Buffoman keep the politics out of here and stick to our first love ….UH Warriors and Rainbows….good job Wahines and Warriors for being victorious. I know the wahines had a slump in the middle of the season but look at them now. There were the negative comments earlier in the year about Coolen’s philosophy about hitting but I always prefer the aggressive approach and forget the slam hitting.
I meant slap hitting….I guess more tired than I realized from the yard work…bulk pickup so all the junks.
oldtimer808, congratulations on having the cleanest yd in neighborhood. yea!!!!! but also the tiredest yardman!!!!
I’ll defer to the decisions of the coaches that toil with the student-athletes on a day to day basis and understand the dynamics of running a team in reality as opposed to from the sidelines or the computer monitor and keyboard.
Hoping the Warriors continue to show improvement even as they travel to and from Mau’i. Each will rise to the highest of their ability to perform and learn.
Kevin I too defer to the coaches and I support them because I know how difficult it is to coach so I will always support our coaches with much appreciation for their dedication and work ethic and yes I am the tiredest yardman in response to Whitey..is that one word or what…tiredest.
one word oldtimer, just like you are the bestest and now the tiredest.
Howzit Tsaikos.
howzit Whitey.
those of you going to Maui for tomorrow’s scrap, represent!
Go Warriors!
Go Tsaikos.
Go tim!
I just noticed something about the updates in news with the StarAdvertiser….no word on the Wahines winning at Nevada but update of the Warriors baseball team beating San Jose. Didn’t the Wahines play earlier in the day?
@88 oldtkmer808 that is just WRONG!
You girls GO WAHINE!
Okay, now leaving to GO VOTE!
Sorry oldtimer808 I’m not good with spellcheck on my IPhone!
hello buddy!…
I reckon something genuinely interesting about your blog so I saved to bookmarks….
#70 Buffoman: Once people start talking politics, the conversation get ugly.
My Sainted mother always told me to avoid talking about politics and the Great Pumpkin.
No problems my fingers miss the keys too
have fun in maui tomorrow! eat some guri guri for me!
Here today gone to Maui!
(wish I was as well)
GO WARRIORS!
See… popularity contest. Wahine are ranked right now, HIGH RPI, took down the #1/2 team in the country, have two of the top pitchers in the NATION, etc…
YET..
WHAT? JACKS***.
All this does is PROVE that my theories are CORRECT.
40 years ago 300K women participated in organized sports.. today over 3 million, but there is NO level “playing field”.
Anyone denying the bias is so full of crap it’s coming out of their ears and nose.
Spring ball happening across the country at all levels.
In D3 it’s, “Pads? We don’ need no steekin’ pads!”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_ZPElwZPqg&feature=g-all-u&context=G2b725a3FAAAAAAAAAAA
kevin…you should take your beef to the sports editor and the editor-in-chief of the star-advertiser.
Perhaps the SID for softball needs to make sure the story gets to the S-A sports desk.
jm,
Sorry, this is NOT on UH’s softball SID.
The press release came out about 20 minutes after the game ended on UH’s site.
For baseball, UH didn’t send up it’s release until 7:26pm on the UH site. The “breaking news” on the ‘Tiser came out at 5:55pm.
This is NOT on UH’s softball SID.
Don’t worry about it.
Depending on the sports page tomorrow, we’ll see what kind of HAND-WRITTEN letter it will be.
I think somebody needs to take a deep breath.
And not use caps all of the time.
ST,
Hi, I’m Kevin, nice to meet you. 😆
I like to go with my first instincts, it has served me well so far.
Switching channels, but staying with softball … awesome OIA championship game just completed with Campbell beating Kapolei in extra innings after the tying home run was taken off the board and ruled a catch. Great game girls.
Btw,
No one was advised to “calm down” after some expressed their displeasure about a radio host not covering UH football s-i-g-n-i-n-g day enough.
A record was tied today.
A team is the only ranked-team at UH right now.
A team is #1 in the conference.
Yet….????
Looking forward to seeing da warriors and their fans tomorrow at War Memorial. Field is ready for FOOTBALL!!!!!!
No, Kevin, it doesn’t serve you well.
If you’re mad all of the time, after a while it just becomes white noise.
Besides, SA probably is one of the only major papers with a fulltime softball beat writer. Jason’s a good reporter. I’m sure he’ll have a nice writeup tomorrow. He also has other duties. I don’t know his schedule but he might be part of the crew covering the LPGA tourney.
So, relax.
Besides, thanks to you, Pomai, Ralph, etc. we have ample coverage right here.
Terrible to see a championship game end like that or be decided by that.
The HHSAA needs to invest in a better outfield fencing alternative as that instance has happened too many times for it not to be an issue, especially in a championship game.
ST,
I’m not putting it on Jason Kaneshiro, it’s always been made known that the editors issue the assignments and what not.
Im only getting started and will be finished by Sunday and will send a letter to the editors.
Besides, if people here react to my “white noise” or not that’s fine. I don’t care. Im not going to stay quiet.
Sorry.
To clarify,
Im not irritated at the assigned beat writer.
The prioritization of what makes “breaking news” or what story gets a bigger portion of the sports page depending on the situation (i.e. who’s winning shouldn’t take a backseat to who lost a game) is an upper management/editor decision.
Unless I am mistaken that is what I’ve been led to believe for the most part.
It seems like you think there’s a conspiracy against the Wahine. I really don’t think so. LikeI said, the paper devotes a fulltime beat writer.
Perhaps a song?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SCtfZ5uqNsg
I actually don’t know about the breaking news section.
If it’s something that the news section would run, I’ll call it in. If not, I’ll just post it here.
I think if you’re a subscriber and you’re not getting the story in the daily paper, that would be a valid complaint. The lack of a one-paragraph story in the free section, not so much.
By the way, that’s also my stance with this blog. Nobody pays to read it and I don’t get paid to write it.
So the word is out that the Colts will have them some Luck.
How are the prospects looking for Warrior NFL hopefuls?
I have an online subscription, $50/year just so I can read the sports articles.
But this is more than some breaking news thing.
If anything this “little” thing was the breaking point already.
I think I’m gonna just stop talking softball here already. Besides there are enough people here doing so, there is no need.
ST, nothing personal, you’re a good guy and accomodating, but I just can’t do this here anymore. I’m still sending my “valid” complaints in writing via mail to the proper personel because its what I feel I need to do.
Aloha.
d1, your english teacher is very proud of you.
Okie and dokie.

ST,
What’s up with FB Jared Leaf? Haven’t seen or heard any practice reports on him.
Also, what’s the latest ailment sidelining WR-turned-TE Darius Bright?
d1, excellent idea, but need to rest for tomorrow.
d1…perhaps this song by her would best soothe the ire of some.

i wonder how much that guy got paid for that biru song???
al,
Das for Sunday
It’s Friday nite. beeru…..
Oh, wait. whitey….you right. Early start tomorrow.
Aiya just logged in and read some of the post. The problem with writing on a blog is sometimes your thoughts are misinterpreted so I apologize if my comment on the Wahines caused some consternation. I respect the information that I get from coming on here so mahalo to ST for providing this blog as another avenue for information and recent happenings with the UH Athletic program. Just wanted to say I am looking forward to the football season whether we win or lose because of the great attitude and organization of our coaching staff.. Go Rainbow Warriors!!
At least three cases I would think
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp1F16_7lO0
Okay, so then by the same token why is there never any press on the Wahine sailors?
Consistent top ten nationally year after year.
Yeah sailing!

Al I was waiting for her to sing “Amazing Grace” in English after the Japanese version…hmmm..maybe she did and I just clicked off too soon but I am soothed and now I shall fade away and close my eyes and dream of …..private.
and the Sailors, men and women, I believe, do it for the love of the sport, none are on athletic scholarships.
Mahalo Al that song “I say a Little Prayer” brings back memories from my old days but that song was written by Burt Bachkerat for Dionne Warwick and recorded around 1966 or 67. I know I spelt his name wrong..oh well. Ok now going moi moi.

Why you gotta bring Koamahu into this? 😈
Leaf is hurt. Not sure what he has, tho.
Bright’s never fully recovered from the wrist surgery. He’s in yellow, meaning he can’t be hit.
long ago a coach used to bark in your ear.
“you can play if you are hurt. but, not if you are injured. so what, are you hurt or injured!!!????”
it definitely tested your manhood.
Is the entire panoply of jersey wearers making the trip?
Like whitey said, Long day tomorrow.
Oyasumina-tsai…
No, Chow says they’re leaving a few behind.
Kevin, I emailed Ferd about late or no breaking news report on Wahine softball. He forwarded the email to editor. If Jason is assigned prime reporter for softball, he should follow up with timely news reporting, especially for a Top-20 ranked team. Catch the game on UH game tracker. They also do a nice job of reporting – all sports.
If not for UH Athletics website, I would not know of athletes like TeRina Keenan (Auckland, New Zealand), Women’s discuss/shotput. The UH Track and Field women’s team has around 48 athletes.
Thank you and d1shima for your musical links. I especially liked the Hibari link because in the 50s, I patronized all the Japanese theaters to watch chambara. Toyo, Kokusai, in the back of Aala Park – Nippon?, Kapahulu Theater, Golden Harvest Theater.
My friend introduced me to Japanese movies because they started to show them with subtitles – now you could follow what was being said to a fashion. My first Japanese feature was called “Daibusatso Toge” – “The Blind Swordsman, featuring Kataoka Chiezo, and Nakamura Kinnosuke. At first, the stars seemed like a scrambled lot, one looked like the other. But after seeing several movies, I began to discriminate, and notice the facial differences. Older stars: Okochi Denjiro, Kataoka Chiezo, Yamagata Isao, Kinnosuke Nakamura – my favorite, Sonny Chiba, Azuma Chiyonosuke. Hibari was my favorite Japanese actress, beautiful and melodious singing.
That was years ago in the fifties, I am surprised that I still remeber their names, and all.
Al, thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.
Go Warriors!
Wow, just got caught up reading. d1 & al thanks for the levity and YouTube links! Except for the Amazing Grace number, I wished for a little streamer at the bottom of the screens in English. Hope everyone has a great time on Maui today! Go Warriors! Go Wahine! Keep voting!

Good morning….Midnight don’t forget Hashizuo Okawa another all time favorite samurai in the days of Toyo Theatre.
Great Morning All!
Warriors No Ka Oi!
Morning Midnight,
Hope your recovery is well along the way.
Forgot all of the Japanese actors you mentioned. I lived in the area- Kukui/College Walk back then and did see most if not all of the same movies you probably saw. We could have discussed movies in CIQ back then too had we known. Get well!
Looking forward to reading da news from Maui today.
Bestests samurai movie – Chushingura
