“Raising the bar”

There was yelling, no-pause action, and three players were ousted for “lollygagging.”

In other words, it was a productive Tuesday practice.

“We made it hard,” head coach Norm Chow said of the Warriors’ first practice in four days. “We wanted it hard. They hung in there. They sucked it up. It’s going to be hard. We’re raising the bar.”

Chow had set two goals for yesterday’s practice: 1) Maintain the intensity and focus, and 2) Work on tackling.

Chow noted there were several missed tackles in last Friday’s scrimmage. “It’s not their fault,” Chow said. “We didn’t practice tackling (enough). That’s what we tried to do (yesterday).”

The Warriors will have scrimmage-like sessions in their next two practices — tomorrow on the grass field and Saturday at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium.

Also:

• Quarterback Jeremy Higgins apparently has ascended to No. 2. There were screams of approval, from his grandmother and auntie, after each of his pass completions yesterday.

• There is the belief the pro-set offense is a set offense. Not so. The Warriors have multiple formations, from double tight ends to an empty set. An impressive sight is running back Joey Iosefa taking off on a downfield route. Good luck to the defender who has to cover Iosefa in the open field.

• Iosefa also serves as the personal protector on punts. Iosefa, a former high school quarterback, is the Warriors’ Tim Tebow.

• T.J. Taimatuia has moved from weakside linebacker to middle linebacker. He was on the first-team defense yesterday.

• Yesterday’s opening defense: DE Beau Yap, DT Haku Correa, DT Geordon Hanohano, DE Paipai Falemalu, SLB Art Laurel, MLB T. J. Taimatuia, WLB George Daly-Lyles, CB John Hardy-Tuliau, FS Bubba Poueu-Luna, SS Leroy Lutu, CB Dee Maggitt.

• DT/NT Mose Samia, who is having a good spring, is considered part of the starting rotation.

• Calen Friel resumed practicing yesterday, and he did well in defensive drills. When he’s up to speed, he’ll be in the rotation at one of the interior-line positions. There are murmurs that Friel would be a nice fit on the depleted offensive line.

Happy birthday to Glendalyn Junio.

Also happy birthday to the creator of a great comment (“It’s better than statehood”) and great senior-night dunk — David Hallums, Pearl City High’s head football coach. To recap: Hallums grabbed the side of the backboard with his left hand, pulled himself up, kissed the backboard and dunked. And that’s how you raise the bar.

  5. Bugaz April 18, 2012 6:56 am

Raising the bar gets easier in doing the limbo, but not football! Take care of business both on and off the field.

    Go for it –

They have to stop stealing from the defense.

  8. Haleakala April 18, 2012 7:02 am

“ousted for lollygagging”. How long are they ousted for? Should they have not learned by now that they cannot lollygag in front of Coach?

  17. Stretch April 18, 2012 7:23 am

Good morning everyone…. I’m glad it’s the spring and our first game isn’t for another 4.5 months

  18. Hilo-Warrior April 18, 2012 7:24 am

Super Excited for tonight. Not much in the sense of visually seeing what is going on over there in Manoa. These three hours are gonna be awesome.

And out of curiosity what is up with Allen Sampson? Is he still injured?

  19. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2012 7:25 am

The offense still hasn’t returned Tavita Woodard, who was practicing as the No. 1 tight end yesterday.

I think Clark Evans has some sort of ailment. He reported to Heffernan’s rehab facility yesterday, where the treatment is worse than the injury.

  20. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2012 7:26 am

Sampson is still recovering, but he’s allowed to practice. He just can’t participate in heavy-contact drills.

  21. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2012 7:27 am

By the way, I had to look up the definition of lollygagging. I’m old, but not that old.

I supposed in the old days, like when Koakane was a lad, whippers used to snap.

But is there an age limit?

How come you only hear about young whippersnappers?

  50. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2012 8:27 am

LHB (Large Human Being) was standing next to Laupepa Letuli. Pepa looked small. Pepa’s never looked small before.

  55. al April 18, 2012 9:10 am

congrats to jeremy higgins and chris gant for pursuing the dream.

  56. Go Hawaii April 18, 2012 9:10 am

Great new about Higgins. No relation to this kid, but I remember watching him at St Louis. Great passing motion, natural and flowing. Good sense of timing too with his receivers. That his receivers regularly dropped passes thrown on the money is not his fault. Would like to see him as the starter.

  57. al April 18, 2012 9:11 am

liver, lollygagging, darn i guess i am old.

but, we all used to tease him that his kids athleticism really came from his wife anne who was a standout athlete at sacred hearts.

Can’t think of a place in the Liliha area that would have enough Tsaiko parking. I remember when my mom made liver for dinner. I used to wait for her to yell “dinner” and I would run and get my rice with lots of crispy bacon. Then I could herey dad say “what happened to all the bacon!”

I miss my mom’s cooking – stuffed bitter melon, beef tongue, gandule bean rice and only she made tripe curry stew.

    A-House:

If your doctor is willing to state that it’s a “possibiity” that all the night firing accelerated your vision loss… then you’ll get compensated. My father did for his loss of hearing. Standing too close to the heavy artillery.

  118. madeinhawaii April 18, 2012 2:07 pm

    A-house..

btw… since he didn’t claim it until many years after he was diagnosed, they prorated it overhis expected life span and gave him $900 a month. My father was shocked!… Happy but shocked. He enjoyed that additional benefit over the last 4 years of his life. It was welcomed money. Especially since my mother was paralyzed and bed-ridden.

Gotta smile at Stephane Ricketts effort to “try” teach girls

the game of softball in Pago Pago.

“…this past summer, Ricketts and her sisters Samantha and Keilani served as instructors/supervisors at a clinic in Pago Pago, Samoa, where they taught the value of education and athletics while trying to teach the Samoan youth the game of softball.” (Lowe’s page)

So question is, is her sister here in Hawaii, too, on the team?

And did they accomplish their missions and will we see the fruit

of her labor coming to Hawaii in the future? Hope so.

  126. Kevin April 18, 2012 3:09 pm

    Sister?

Stephanie’s sister Keilani is the sole ace at Oklahoma and their older sister Samantha (OKU alum as well) is a coach at Witchita State.

Their brother Richard played football for Air Force, d or o line I think.

Good family support. In 2010, Oklahoma was ousted so both Keilani and Samantha donned the UH green to support Stephanie and in 2011 Stephanie did the same for Keilani at the WCWS.

  127. Kevin April 18, 2012 3:14 pm

I have no idea what the fastpitch softball culture is like in American Samoa. Like how many girls play on a regular basis or how many teams there, if any. I assume they’d have a LONG way to go if girls there want to get a D1 scholarship in Hawaii or elsewhere.

D1 softball recruiting is like D1 women’s volleyball, the talent, top talent, is in the club and travel squads. Being in American Samoa, any club team there would have a challenge, travel-wise getting to experience the same competition levels and frequency as they would in California where the cream of the crop is for D1 talent much like the football pipeline in Florida and Texas.

Who knows, Im sure there might be a handful of exceptions where natural athletic ability and the ability to learn quickly can be found but again the challenge for American Samoa is their isolation from other competition.

  165. Kekoa April 18, 2012 9:48 pm

I have to be brutally honest…that song, “The Heart of a Warrior” doesn’t do much to get my enthusiasim pumped up. Love the man, love his music, but this one needs help! The young rapper that has a part in this effort made me walk away wondering WTH was that?

OK…gonna take my meds and go to bed. Thanks Al for providing the inspiration. I told Darrick Branch you were my hero.

  166. BigHiloFan2 April 18, 2012 9:53 pm

    Kekoa,

i feel what you’re saying, but I also gotta say that brudda tried to do his part, contribute, be a part of the community, a former player. hats off to him for his good vibes.

NOTHING could have happened tonight to change the good vibes i got from all the players, former players, coaches and Commander in Chief.

was just an AWESOME show, my friend. I got da wife to tape record American Idol as I stayed fixed in front da tv for 3 HOURS. never changed channel. 😀

    AWESOME.

    Goodnight, gang!

  171. Kekoa April 18, 2012 10:09 pm

BHF ~ I hear you Big Guy. There really was a lot of good information put out to the fans tonite. I Salute the crew at KGMB for moving the program quickly and effectively between the different venues. Pairing coaches and players brought an interesting vibe to the interviews.

Coach Chow really does have the Warrior Express rolling smoothly out of the station. It is so good to see all facets of the team starting to meld. I’m excited to see these young men take on USC, and push them HARD!

  172. HiloBilly April 18, 2012 11:03 pm

    BHF2…….

Close friend of mine breaks out w/ shingles on half of his face, too, every now & then, seems like when under heavy job-related stress. He was going gonzo with the itching, especially, so we got him to dab kukui nut sap on the affected areas (easiest place to break off whole clusters of the green nuts was at the front of the Hilo airport post office, a whole bunch of trees). Then, as he needed, he’d break off a nut, wait for the clear sap to form, & dab. It works wonders, tightens affected areas, & really, really eases any itching. And, it works right away & doesn’t cost you anything!

If you don’t have any, son #2 has a loaded tree at his house & can pick some for you & take to work……he’s stationed at the Laupahoehoe fire station w/ your nephew, the nurse’s brother, & can meet you in Pepeekeo.Take care!

BUT, I love the idea that he still shows up!

  179. Kekoa April 19, 2012 6:02 am

No disrespect meant D-1, I like the title, but that’s all.

  180. bigislandkurt April 19, 2012 6:06 am

Kapono’s song wasn’t too bad. But he could have left the poet Kealoha out of that one. The song went downhill from there.

    howzit howzit

now was that not a great event last night? informative. entertaining. had all the players fired up. had all the former players fired up. had all the coaches fired up. and all led by a humble guy. a real humble appearing guy.

not a word about being concerned about any part of the upcoming season. not a face about any concern about any part of the upcoming season.

da man is a class act. Cherry and Tanaka were besides demselves. so was Rick.

my 2 cents. if we going for a 1st class program, all in the program gotta start taking better care of their public images. including coaches. including JD.

Coach, work on da public image. brudda coach gonna find out why he moving to da back office. next to da Fabreeze locker.

    😆

all kidding aside, that was just an awesome display of humility and teamwork by the WHOLE staff and players. AWESOME!
