Tuesday’s notes

• The Warriors resume practicing this afternoon. You’ll know that, of course, because of the loud music and the pads popping. Head coach Norm Chow said he would like to see improved tackling, so several drills will be devoted to that skill.

• Chow said the Warriors will have combo practice/scrimmages on Thursday and Saturday.

• Running back Sterling Jackson, who underwent offseason shoulder surgery, will not be cleared for contact drills until July.

• John Hardy-Tuliau will remain at cornerback for the rest of spring training. He was the nickelback as a freshman in 2010 and safety last year.

• Remember cornerback Justin “J.T.” Turner? Apparently he is on track to earning an associate degree and there is a possibility he might be joining the Warriors this summer.

• Tavita Woodard will remain at tight end today. This will be his fourth practice at that position after moving from defensive end for what was supposed to be a one-day experiment.

* * * * *

Tuika Tufaga, a UH graduate assistant and former Warrior defensive tackle, has signed to play with the Sagamihara Rise of the X-League, Japan’s professional football association.

It’s a one-year contract, which includes complimentary use of an apartment and car. He departs this summer.

Tufaga said he is expected to play defensive end.

Former Warriors Kevin Jackson, Derek Faavi and Karl Noa also play in the league.

X-League, according to the English-version Web site, is short for Japan American Football League Xcellence. I suppose it really should be called the E league, so you can get E-mail rather than X mail, but … oh, never mind. Best wishes to Tufaga, who will continue to work with the Warriors through the spring semester.

There is a name for the new radio show featuring Michael Lafaele and Nate Ilaoa. It will be called “Mid-Day Fix,” and will air Wednesdays on ESPN 1500 AM.

Noticed the blog “correcting itself” yesterday. 😆

Wow, talk about a walk down kau-kau and memory lane!

Have lots of things to get done today, but now it looks like I’m gonna have to spend my morning in search of chinese food, roast pork and char siu pork! 😆 j/k My Docs would have to wait in line behind Sweety to kill me for my transgressions! 🙂

Nice memories though, thanks to some nice folks. Masu’s – 🙁 Sweety and I used to love the occaisional plates there when we first got together.

Nuuanu Okazuya on Nuuanu just down from Vineyard is now one of our favorites, along with Chun Wah Kam in Kalihi. Have to mention Char Hung Sut downtown, while we’re talking about guud fuud in the Punchbowl ‘Hood.

Geez. This feels like support group therapy. 🙂 Now that I’ve shared, the urge to gorge on roast pork has passed… I’ll have a bowl of oatmeal while I reminesce. 😆

Alas, Liliha/Lanakila is known for its small mom & pop stores and eateries (past and present). Trying to find Tsai-ko seating and parking could be a problem…and McDonald’s is not really an option. 👿

    Maybe DaveLetterman has a suggestion…

Of course, one block further down on Vineyard Blvd we have Happy Day dim sum and Moon Garden.

Got back from the Lotte Open Pro-Am tournament at Ko Olina. Stephanie Kono was on top of the leader board. Michele Wie’s putting is resolved? Maybe not. Putted from about 5 feet on the 14th hole and missed. Since its only a Pro-Am tournament, she practiced that putt 3 more times, only making the last one. I hope she doesn’t get too discouraged as a bunch of pro and amatures missed that put from a similar angle, most a little longer, but some even closer. I stayed at the 14th hole for the morning round.

.. dunno if I’d like to go to a bar if I were single again… did that route when I was in my early 30’s… pillow would always smell like old perfume, alcohol, garlic or kalbi. And I could never remember their names in the morning.. Not that I was drunk, mind you. Just that I had a hard time with non-English/American names.

  66. tommui April 17, 2012 3:45 pm

This was on the SA webpage this afternoon at 3:59PM:

“The proposed amalgamation of the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA remains “on course,” the chairman of the MWC Board of Directors said today.

A CBS Sportsline report had earlier labeled the impending merger as “unlikely” and quoted an “industry source” as saying it “probably will not happen.”

But Nevada-Las Vegas president Neal Smatresk, who heads the MWC board, told the Star-Advertiser in an email, “We are on course and proceeding as planned.”

Last month officials of both leagues said they expected a resolution in early June.

The University of Hawaii will join the MWC as a football-only member July 1st after 33 years in the Western Athletic Conference.

In February, the two conferences had declared their intention of dissolving their leagues to form a new 16-to-24 member conference but acknowledged in March that obstacles made a merger more likely.”

but i got one tincy weency eety beety question for Coach tomorrow nite.

how come UH let Akoakoa Kennedy, da 2 years in a row heavyweight wrestling State champ, who lost almost 30 pounds to make wrestling weight from the end of the football season to the wrestling season, had to miss coupla metes because he neva make weight, and den go play for JC in Ariz.

imma tinkin to myself, how we wen miscue dat one?

i know most likely dat kinda genius won’t happen again anytime soon, but dat wen take da cake. i still scratching my head on dat one, brudda Tsaikos. da only excuse i get is dat Kam Keaau coach neva get da memo from Coach Chow. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.

Coach Chow, maybe you gotta schmuuz Coach Wags and da odda coaches, make em feel appreciated. you’re right. I am totally habut! but at least i’m being cordial. 😀 ok. at least a little cordial. 😀

Logging in to add my contribution.

    Use # 105 as a guide.

  103. HiloBilly April 17, 2012 10:02 pm

BIK: the only liver I eat nowadays is my neighbor’s broke da mouth ake…very, very clean, w/ just the right amount of Hawaiian salt, inamona, huluhuluwaena limu, & chili pepper, oh my!

BHF2……I see Akoakoa everyday. Bruddah’s weight goal was 270# (defense, be the hunter, not the hunted) which he’s at right now. Lots of muscle, still running & lifting, looks absolutely great! Most people don’t realize he played both ways for all games, since our team numbers tend to be small.

Wags is retiring, & sold his Kea’au home; hopefully the new AD will be proactive in helping our students beyond HS, we shall see.

  104. ai-eee-soos April 17, 2012 10:12 pm

Steph now at 25.9 %. Keep it going gang. Get to 26+ %.

    Break time.

    War-E-Or:

I’m hoping Coach Chow’s more disciplined approach will help eliminate that trap game mentality and keep our players on the edge no matter who the opponent might be.

  106. al April 17, 2012 10:30 pm

anybody remember the chicken liver omelette that was world reknowned coming from the kitchen of the old tahitian lanai?

celebs used to come in just to dine upon that wonderous culinary delight.

  107. Kekoa April 17, 2012 11:08 pm

    Hilo Billy ~

Now you’ve done it. I’m so ono for the ake as you described above. Some how the bag of Dorito chips I’m snacking on now just does not even come close to the ultimate ono level of raw stuff.

I’ll be on the lookout for ake, vana, and O’io tomorrow. I’ll settle on the best 2 out of 3.

    Note to T-gate Grill team:

Pls save a spot on the grill for my favorite Blood sausage links. Mahalo.

  108. jm2375 April 17, 2012 11:28 pm

Mercy! In ILH softball, MPI captures its 2nd straight ILH title by run-ruling that school who will not be named at said school’s field, 17-6.

    GO OWLS!!

  109. al April 17, 2012 11:43 pm

    kekoa…now you started it.

okay, so at marukai they sell this uni (aka vana) that is seasoned in a bottle. get the spoon out and be creative. hot rice, mini musubi, nigiri sushi, poi…you get the picture.

often times i find lomi oio at marukai also pretty good with the limu and inamona going on.

  110. al April 17, 2012 11:44 pm

    jm2375…did you say keiki carlos?

  111. mo808 April 18, 2012 12:17 am

Ahhh shucks Al! Could not open your YouTube music video!

Here’s hoping for at least four unbroken hours of sleep tonight, so I can beat the traffic tomorrow because WholeFoods is opening…and that’s another new place in Kailua fo grind at!!!

  112. Kekoa April 18, 2012 1:35 am

    AL ~

Tamashiro’s Market has an ample supply of O’io. Then, I take it home and add the ‘magic’ of old skool ingreedy-mints to it. Just enuff to make it finer-then-frog-hair!>/i>.

  113. madeinhawaii April 18, 2012 1:55 am

    Kekoa,

The largest fish my father ever caught was a 36″ O’io. He snagged it by the tail with a lure and thought he was fighting an ulua. My mother took it, chopped it up.. deboned it and made kamaboko. First time I ever saw anybody make fish cake. I was 9. Wow!..51 years ago.

    BHF2 and War-E-Or

I was on business in mainland when UH played USC one year (can’t remember when, but Chad Owens had a great game) with a pretty stacked offense, but no D. Although the Warriors played well against USC second team, in second half, the first half told the story. The Warrior D will have to show up big, and maybe some new household names will emerge. Will be interesting to see who is able to step up when the lights come on.

  115. jm2375 (Infuse) April 18, 2012 5:21 am

    Good morning.

Al-san – yep, MPI featuring UH recruit Keiki Carlos.

    Go Owls!

  116. gmahoney April 18, 2012 5:24 am

Congrats, Owls! Always like when the small schools put a hurt on the large schools. That Keiki is a great get for Na Wahine.
