Howdy Prez Day to all.
While most of you are taking the day off, it’s been a roller coaster ride for me the past few months. I just returned from Newport Beach on a “spy” mission for a few days for FOX, only to find out my dad is getting a brand new hip this Friday. So, it’s another weekend out of town. (Last weekend was a blast in Vegas seeing Elton John in concert for free. He put on a great show and his voice was excellent. He also had most of his original band. Every song sounded like what you heard on the radio.)
Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say boo. I’ve only read the blog headers for the past few days, but noticed Curveball’s loss. Deepest condolences. Also, I didn’t realize it had been 7 years since ST drove himself to the hospital to save his own life. Until a few years ago, ST referred to me as the guy who said “let’s go”. He has always been good friends w/ Margo, but I’m honored to have gotten to know him better. A very generous and geniune person.
I miss all of you and hope to be able to be back on a regular basis very soon!!

I wouldn’t blame Lingle for Frazier.
As Frazier was hired by Evan Dobelle who was hired by Lingle’s predecessor Mr Cayetano (if you’re going to point the finger at the gov. for a UH hiring) back in 2001. Frazier himself was hired in 2002, but Lingle didn’t become the Gov till 12/2/2002 (according to wikipedia) which would effectively mean she had nothing to do with Frazier’s hiring.

That’s nice how you built up what the govs pass on in terms of UH. Lingle is clueless. Insert obscenities here. Could some one would poke her with a pin and see if she’s alive, stuffed of if she’ll deflate. I’m going with deflate. She’s like a giant inflatable blow-up doll from Sensually Yours, that got drastically marked down because no one was interested. That’s not much of a legacy. If our next gov is a woman, I hope she takes an interest in education and athletics, and understands the relationship between the two at the college level. Hopefully we don’t get stuck with Mufi, who is all mochi, from brain to bells.

Because the donation that Tom Mui helped to get seems to count towards the Ching Complex matching funds, there is not that much left that needs to be raised. However, Aloha Stadium needs a *lot* of money for upgrades. I would hope that the Ching Complex money wouldn’t even be a worry for UH, and if the State was going to come up with Aloha Stadium money then adding the Ching Complex money to it wouldn’t be a big part of the overall funding granted.
This semester, I am off every other Thursday. But it’s (finally) back to work week for me this week. Looks like I’ll miss the cattle call… 🙁

IT takes a whole day for it to clean one room and you better close all your doors ..what if it over heats and you forget you spilled water! then if your chair is lower the vacuum can’t clenb it ..if you have a piles of rags on the floor better pick it up or it will get tangled over heat then WHaT NEXT ….sweeper on the wood floors is easier to use a dollar store sells those with refills.!

A few years ago I had a talk with venture capitalist, Barry Weinman. He’s got tons of leads to deep pockets from Silicon Valley that have second homes in the islands all wanting to invest in a good profitable idea.
I’ve said this countless times before, just building a new stadium is not enough. Such a structure sitting idle that long is a money pit. It needs to be a destination that generates revenue 24/7/365. It’s needs to be a diverse complex complete with a shopping mall anchored by two major tenants; restaurants; on-site hotel; meeting and ball rooms; city, state and federal offices. Events held within the stadium cannot be the only primary source of revenue. It needs to be diverse.
The stadium can be built on the actual site in four stages. Each stage will be functional by football season and be used in conjunction with the remains of the existing stadium structure.
Same principle can be applied to building parking structures. Each structure will be completed in stages and fully functional by the start of each football season. Imagine catwalks from upper parking structures that go directly to upper levels of the stadium. Easy access in and out.

Gotta agree with your assessment. I feel that there needs to be somebody out there that thinks outside of the box when it comes to these types of big projects. I do agree that there are people out there that are willing to shell out some kind of money if there was somebody out there with the type of vision that they would feel comfortable with. The type of big vision that made them deep pockets. These are the type of people we need in our administration, people that are willing to put it out on line to reach the big time.
I think we have some of those people already in place and feel that with this new president search, we need to find a person that will put everything together to work as one. Some one with, as they say, star power, that has a name behind the title.
i do agree with your idea about a multi-complex arena.
for me, since i don’t golf, converting the ala wai gc is still the best option. for exactly what you describe to include the new athletic complex relocated in its entirety to this site which includes dorms, class rooms which btw can have adult classes at night, etc, etc. it should have been built before the convention center was made and the cc could have been a part of this complex.
they could still convert the cc to an annex of the ala moana center.

My understanding is that there is something on the order of $180 million set aside for the refurbishment and upgrade of Aloha Stadium over the next couple of years. That’s far more than any of Lingle’s predecessors coughed up isn’t it? Does she get credit for that, or does the legislature? What is $180 mill gonna look like on the ole’ rust bucket?
Other than that, it appears we can credit Ms. Lingle with trying to ensure that ceded lands are stolen from Hawaiians once and for all… I hope I’m incorrect about that.
Oh yah- she also sat on her hands while her buddies, Kitty Lagreta et al, on the regents let June Jones get away.

I feel that $180 million proposed to refurbish the rust bucket would be one of the biggest waste of money I’ve seen in a long time. I feel going forward with a new stadium will be the biggest savings for the state. I feel becuase the stadium is so old and outdated, who knows how much more money we will need to spend on regular basis to keep the old stadium up to standards.

A-House: I forgot to answer your earlier question. The NCAA rules don’t dictate what title a coach must have.
With a little bit of modification, I think the blue print that has been suggested by A-joe would be a big time hit. With such a big area to work with the potential of the area could be endless, but as I said, we would need somebody with vision to be able to put together a package that could get the founding for the project and the vision to make this a reality.

Wow!
Stanford tore down their 85,500 seat stadium and built a brand new 50,000 seater for $90 million. And they did it within 9 months!
We could easily do the same.
Now, more than ever would be the perfect time to do it. Every facet of the economy is hurting BIGTIME for some stimulation.
It’s just a matter of getting everyone together and agreeing on getting this project done. From designers, engineers, material suppliers, shipping companies, laborers and the unions to fricken agree on not lining their pockets but seeing this project through.
Better to get a little something than to have nothing at all through these tough economic times.

The 2009 NFL Scouting Combine will be held Feb. 18-24 in Indianapolis, Ind. More than 300 of the best college football players will be invited to participate.

For six days at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, players are put through a series of drills, tests and interviews with more than 600 NFL personnel including head coaches, general managers and scouts.
Last year I remember ST was at the RCA Dome providing updates to the blog. The stadium used to be the home of the Indianapolis Colts and has since been demolished this last December. Lucas Oil Stadium is the new home of the NFL franchise Indianapolis Colts and the NFL combine and is approximately a half a mile away from the old site (RCA Dome).
The NFL combine has been in Indianapolis (at the old stadium, RCA Dome) since 1987.

How are the players selected for the NFL Combine?
Participants are determined annually by a Selection Committee. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent twenty-six NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft.

Final notes-
As comprehensive the test are of the workout and position drills– what I heard on ESPN is that a greater emphasis now of days is on the NFL interview, medical history and all of the other testing as opposed to only looking at workout numbers (like 40 times). Mega workout jockeys with great numbers at workouts– history has shown doesn’t always equate to paralleled success in the NFL. (this is quote from one of the ESPN guys).
For the UH contingent this is your big chance to set your foot inside the door. So take this very important first step. And prove that you belong.
Actually, I put out the gov’s legacy for debate because I wasn’t sure of the answer. Maybe sombody could enlighten me. (Admission: I voted for her twice.)

As all of you may realize, Puck’s Alley and the whole area around there, including the Varsity Theatre site is Kam School/Bishop Trust land. Some sort of cooperative effort on behalf of the UH and Kam School to develop the area for supporting structures like parking etc in exchange for some quid pro quo (free tution for Hawaiians?)

Methinks the State is gonna go with the band-aid approach and pour money to fix up the existing stadium infrastructure. Bad idea, IMO. It only prolongs the inevitable, heaven forbid if the stadium has to be condemned for safety reasons, which we certainly hope won’t ever occur.
I like a-joe’s idea of rebuilding the existing stadium site and seating arrangements in four separate stages. Is that structurally feasible? How about putting in metal bleachers with seatbacks and cupholders (and armrests if you really want ’em) so that the State doesn’t have to go through the process of replacing seatchairs on an annual basis?
Stephen: I’m not sold that Veikune is a probable first day player just yet. He certainly could be, but it’ll depend on how he does at the Combine and at Pro Day. Remember that the first day is just two rounds now. I think he goes in round three. But really solid measureables would probably put him into the 2nd round.

Stanford stadium is not comparable to Aloha Stadium. Stanford stadium was built in a huge dirt hole with wooden bleachers on the dirt. They replaced the wooden bleachers with aluminum bleachers, still on the dirt.

Standford stadium is absolutely comparable.
However inferior, Stanford got a brand spankin’ new stadium for $90 million. We can only patch up Aloha stadium for double that amount.

I like the idea of building a stadium on the Ala Wai golf course. (The golfers might not like losing the public course.) Once it’s built, they could raze Aloha Stadium & place a golf course there. A stadium closer to Waikiki would help to entice the NFL back for Pro Bowl games since it’d be convenient for touristas. You’d need multi-level parking. Expanding the project to include shops and maybe meeting/conference facilities might be lucrative, but may compete with the convention center. Interesting idea.

Rebuild or refurbish, the Stadium is in the right place, imho.
The Debartolo family is developing the largest shopping center on island in the new Hawaiian homestead area of Kapolei. The center piece is going to be the world class hotel that will anchor the complex.
Since this was supposed to be the 2nd city, it’s time to start planning the infastructure for it. The old Barber’s Point airport runway has already been extended to handle jumbo traffic. There is plenty of space around it for parking and airport hotel facilities.
Senator Abrecrombie had proposed building the West Side stadium near the Kunia exit. It was planned to go in on the Northwest quadrant of that exit which has lots of room for a huge stadium and lots of parking.
The new interchange that is opening in Jan of 2009 to add another outlet for traffic relief of Ft. Weaver Rd, plus the light rail planned for the area with other major road improvements would help, but certainly not be enough for such a major project as a super stadium.
A major widening of old Farrington Highway to help take the load off H-1 West and another land bridge built across Ford Island to continue shifting the flow of traffic to a new corridor running East/West across Oahu, had been considered and will be re-visited. I’ll leave the engineering problems for Stretch, Jason and Garret to work out. Me?…I’m just stirring the pot!

why I like the idea of a stadium on ala wai gc is because it’s near waikiki and for the potential of drawing the walk up traffic to the games. foreign tourists never having been to a US stadium or football game might just go because of the novelty and curiosity of it. Add the close proximity to the stadium and the foreign tourists might just go to game just for thrill of it and for maybe for the taste of concessionaire foods.

roysan, you probably hit the correct button on why UH bb has not been very good over the past years. UH used to recruit players from areas east and west which had excellent basketball programs, but somehow are stuck in first gear when it comes to recruiting. i am not sure, but maybe the problem is with the coaches because they are new and have not established a program or it could be that they just wait to see who wants to come to UH. either way, is not good.
the idea of a new stadium for uh sounds good, but how are you going to do it when cannot even finish ching field????

with the number of graduates, undergrads, part time students, and friends of uh, you would think that uh would be able to raise the necessary funds for academics and athletics. the alumni and friends program for uh is probably one of the weakest in the nation. you look at other universities and how they get their money from alumnis and friends because they make it a point to contact and maintain those contacts. another weakness is uh’s marketing strategies. example, field turf for ching field. imagine is uh athletic dept had sent out flyers to all alumnis and past athletes asking them to buy 1 sq ft and uh would recognize them by putting a donor’s plaque with their names on it. i don’t know what the cost was for the field turf, but i would estimate it to be around $50 per sq ft.
I know D-1…kinda creepy, but he is our short stack, no neck senator until anodda one comes along. Of course there’s always Amazie…

A stadium on the Ala Wai or West Oahu could only be up for discussion if the rail is built. Location wise though you can’t beat Halawa.

Discussing the needs of the Dolphins, this article again mentions how Samson might be better suited for guard in the power system that Parcells brought in. Samson fit at center in Cam Cameron’s system, but it really sounds like the new system might force him to move to guard. If Miami drafts a center or signs on as a free agent, we’ll know what their decision is.
Georgia’s head coach promised one of his recruits that signed a NLI that he would attend his high school graduation if the recruit was valedictorian. Unfortunately, the NCAA would declare that a violation so he cannot attend the graduation.
Cutbacks in University funding is requiring coaches to take unpaid leave, from BCS schools like Arizona, Clemson, and Maryland, to the WAC’s Utah State. I’m sure that JD has been looking over this option and will have to weigh this type of thing vs. layoffs if things get worse.
A *lot* of money is needed for a new stadium, and I don’t see Gov. Lingle, the Legislature, or others seriously attempting to come up with that money…even when the economy was much better it was decided to put the $180 mil band-aid. That is cheaper than building a new stadium…but a new stadium will be needed eventually and the cost will go up each year.
As WassupDoc and others have pointed out, infrastructure projects are being prioritized due to how that type of construction project puts people to work during a tough economy. However, the Gov. and Legislature seem to be looking at spending really won’t get a new stadium.
Finding a location for the stadium is less critical to me than finding the money. Without that, everything is just plans and photoshop…and the cost of the stadium rises each year.
Kapiolani Park is on landfill. An engineer would know better than I if that would present a problem when building a stadium on the site. I was wondering if the Ala Wai golf course was built on sand-based soil.

did anyone else notice the mention on the 6 o’clock news about how much the UH lost in its endowment last year due to market losses?
d1: It’s funny (or maybe not), cause I attended a talk the other day about the new Master’s in Financial Engineering program. The department chair mentioned that potential thesis topics could include an optimization of some UH endowments. He mentioned he hadn’t been at UH long (he was most recently at HPU), but he was pretty sure UH was not using state-of-the-art optimization techniques. 😀
If I weren’t going into education, that would be a really cool program to enter. I hope it develops into a top 10 program.
Isn’t there an extinct volcanic crater that would get partially blocked from Waikiki if a stadium were built at Kapiolani Park? 😕

I can see a lot of civil defense/natural catastrophe scenerios where a facility like a stadium within the crater would not seem absurd. Won’t happen though–lot of logistical and emotional drawbacks. But Diamond Head would have a interesting back glow on game nights. 🙂

I think a new stadium would be an idea worth considering. 2 theories, 1) a 40K-50K seat stadium w/ lux boxes. 2) 75K-90K w/ lux boxes. The former would be suitable for attendance now. The later obviously brings us up to par with superbowl/bcs bowl size requirements with the ability to fill the stands should we bring our program up to par with the elite teams in the country. Although expensive I like the later as it gives room for growth and options. Maybe not the best example but people thought the SSC was waaaay to big at 10K. We want to be a big program?…then we gotta think like a big program.
as to the ala wai example. absolutely not. im a golfer haha =). plus, that would be incredibly expensive for the state to buy that prime land from the city. not to mention for planning purposes it may run against the city’s Oahu General Plan and the Development/Sustainable Communities Plan…along with a plethora of land use/zoning policies that must be addressed.
west oahu would be much more sensible and easier to work with imho.

parks, golf courses are open spaces. its nearly impossible to switch from a open spaced zoned parcel to another type i.e bmx or r-1 residential etc etc.
its easy to go from others to open space, but not the other way around.

#162 suggests the use of the ceded lands in the Kapolei area, and close to the new UH West Campus. As several peeps pointed out, it goes back to the funding, and how the compliance issues drive people away.
If you saw tonite’s KGMB news, UH has already lost 38 million dollars in endowments for scholarships in just the last half of 2008. That’s minus 143 million dollars for the entire 2008 year.
The funding of schollie’s are so complicated that I recently gave up trying to get one started for the Tsaiko’s because of the red tape. We did find it a bit easier to donate directly into the Na Koa fund. It just needed to be earmarked specifically for the Wahine Softball team.
Is it just repair n maintenance? Isn’t upgrading and repair two different things?

You know, I was always one of those in favor of a convention center at the current location. But that traffic is horrible, and there’s no parking.
So, to build a stadium at Ala Wai? Forget about that. Don’t know about you, but right now there’s no rail. Traffic is a mess. And I would be ticked having to sit in Waikiki-area traffic for an hour after every game (well, if I were a fan and went to a game for fun).

I think they should just renovate Aloha Stadium. First, lock it into football configuration. Then renovate it in sections. One year, it’s the makai sideline. The next, it’s the mauka sideline. So that means attendance takes a big hit for two years. But I figure even the state can build a half in one year, right?
Then I’d build one of those Pearlridge-like monorails from Kam Drive-In to the stadium.
I still can’t blow my nose without bleeding, which should make tomorrow’s video chat quite interesting.
Anyway, on Sundays, Princesss and I get the “script,” which is an outline. Then on Monday, they send us a revised one. Then Monday afternoon, we get a revision to the revision. Then Tuesday, we get a “final” one.

The ad-libbing should be interesting, especially if I start bleeding.

i had that same condition for years. then one really hot summer i find myself in las vegas. for five days and four nights i kept getting a bleed nose. oh, i had had them for years but, with the dry heat it got worse.
i finally saw an ent specialist upon our return who cauterized the ruptured vessel. its been good since.
of course i have hmsa and not summerlin, so i paid ten bucks.
ST- when I was a kid, I used to get nosebleeds when I did not get enuf sleep… something to ponder.

Chad Owens is one of the best football players to ever put on a Warrior uniform. He certainly was the most exciting. Sometimes playing in the NFL is just a matter of timing and being in the right place atthe right time. I never thought that Chad was given a fair chance to make it in the league as a receiver. As good as Wes Welker is, I think that Chad Owens is every bit as good.
No one said life is fair, especially in the NFL.

Lingle question, I wasn’t sure, but didn’t Lingle have something to do with giving UH more control of the stadium and ending the paying of users fees? I hope someone with the answer is still monitoring yesterday’s blog because I am not sure and would be interested in the answer.
