Shutter receives indefinite suspension

Head coach Norm Chow said quarterback Cayman Shutter has been suspended indefinitely and immediately from team activities in the aftermath of his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.

Shutter will remain on scholarship and be allowed to attend classes. But he will not be permitted to practice, train with the team or attend team meetings while under suspension. Chow said the suspension could last anywhere from a day through the 2012 season.

The suspension is based on violation of team rules.

“He understands there are severe consequences that need to be paid,” Chow said. “We’ve preached that. We’ve talked that. He understand stands that. Yes, he does.”

After a 12-day hiatus, the Warriors resume practicing this afternoon.

The Warriors had spent the first three practices learning the new offensive and defensive concepts. Soon up on the schedule is physical education. Head coach Norm Chow said he plans to have a scrimmage either later this week or early next week.

Those NFL replica jerseys you’re wearing are now collectibles. Nike, which signed a five-year deal to become the supplier of NFL apparel, launched its initial line today. Your “Rodgers,” “Polamalu” and “Tebow” jerseys will be available at your local Champs this month.

But your Warrior Under Armour jerseys still are trendy. Under Armour’s deal with UH runs through June 30, 2016. It should be an easy transition for the new coaching staff. Utah, where Chow previously coached, was an Under Armour program.

Two volleyball players headed to Manoa next year — Moanalua’s Kolby Kanetake and Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Daniel Aina Jr. — were named to the AVCA’s senior All-America watch list.

    But c’est la vie.

  12. kev-1 April 3, 2012 7:17 am

Nike uni designs should be a refreshing change for some teams. There are others, however, that should probably be left alone.

Did they release the pics yet? Stuff I have seen online has been rumored to be fake.

  13. kev-1 April 3, 2012 7:19 am

Gotta be careful talking about uniform changes over here. Some people get a bit touchy . . . “it’s not what you look like, it’s how you play the game” blah, blah, blah . . .

  14. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 7:20 am

  15. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 7:21 am

    kev-1:

There’s a launch party in New York.

  16. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 7:21 am

UH folks said that Under Armour has a schedule for releasing new UH unis. Under Armour sponsors UH football and softball.

  17. kev-1 April 3, 2012 7:22 am

You should be able to embrace change while incorporating tradition.

I read an article yesterday about the unis, and there was a comment from an Oregon exec. and he said that their vision is to change every four years, so that every student athlete that comes into the school can have a unique experience and be a part of. That’s a neat concept. How realistic? Well when you have the funds and connections that Oregon has, why not?

  18. Kevin April 3, 2012 7:23 am

    Kev-1,

The only thing irritating about uniform discussions are those with adult ADDthat state UH should “just go back to Nike” when the obvious issues were news a long time ago and contracts are contracts.

  19. kev-1 April 3, 2012 7:23 am

Thanks ST . . . if there is going to be a party to launch it, we should be expecting some drastic changes.

  20. papajoe2 April 3, 2012 7:24 am

Kentucky wins then they riot. Make ass. Maybe they should disban their basketball team if that’s how they’re goin to act.

  21. kev-1 April 3, 2012 7:24 am

    nothing wrong with UA

  22. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 7:27 am

I noticed I received an e-mail from the Seahawks about the new uniforms.

Give it to the NFL. They make football a year ’round sport.

  23. Kevin April 3, 2012 7:28 am

Rainbow Wahine Softball moves up to #15 in NFCA Coaches Poll, but continues to drop in ESPN.COM/USA TODAY poll at #19.

Personally I don’t care about the trending downslope in the ESPN.COM/USA TODAY poll.

To me, maintenance of the RPI is first and foremost and handling business in conference are PARAMOUNT and goes hand in hand with obviously a post season and decent seeding.

  24. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 7:28 am

    Crazy thought:

Maybe all of that Nike spam was really a preview for us.

  25. kev-1 April 3, 2012 7:37 am

You can go to ESPN to see about the uniforms. No major changes. Seems like just a material thing. What a let down.

  26. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 7:56 am

    Now, now, now.

Just remember that a portion of every sale goes to the NFL’s 33rd team — the Oregon Ducks.

  28. J April 3, 2012 7:57 am

Unfortunately, not for the Seahawks… But I didn’t like the last uniform change either. Prefer the earlier Seahawk blue.

  29. papajoe2 April 3, 2012 7:58 am

#23 Kevin, We just “ruled” the game against New Mexico State ON ESPN, and they dropped us. Oh well. And you are right. The RPI is more important but ESPN has a lot of influence, especially at the end of the season.

  30. J April 3, 2012 8:00 am

Too many quacks in the uniform design department. And I think unis and helmets are different art departments, or last I heard. Have to be careful, otherwise might get da slippah from someone.

    Stephen Tsai,

Tulsa wanted to be the tornadoes, but Georgia Tech already had that nickname at the time. Cyclones would have been the next best thing, but Iowa State has held that nickname since 1895.

Also, doesn’t UA sponsor UH baseball as well?

  40. d1shima April 3, 2012 8:34 am

    @31,

Darn I was just about to post that. Just curious, do you know what Colt Brennan, Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares and Davonne Bess’s Wonderlic scores? I imagine Pilares was the highest of the group but I can imagine all of them doing well.

  44. SteveM April 3, 2012 9:07 am

Yikes! Midnight & Barb are in Arlington, TX, around 15 miles south of Euless.

Hope they are hunkered down and safe.

  45. WarriorNY April 3, 2012 9:07 am

Also, Vince Young had a Wonderlic of 6. Was Coach Chow already apart of the Titans staff when he was drafted or did he come on board afterwards. I ask because Coach Chow said the most important attribute of a QB is his mind.

  46. jm2375 April 3, 2012 9:08 am

  48. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2012 9:22 am

I think the Wonderlic means something if you score high and not so much if you don’t.

  64. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 10:50 am

Warrior NY… I think 40 on the Wonderlic is too high if you want to play football. You are going to have to settle for Nintendo or Xbox games…

Didn’t Chow have a bad year in the NFL because the QB they forced on him had a Wonderlic well below 20?

  65. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 10:52 am

I think for QB you want a guy who can at least get 20 points.

  66. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 10:56 am

Oh okay.. that WAS Vince Young..

Chow strongly urged both Fisher and management to go with veteran QB Kerry Collins instead of Young but his requests fell on deaf ears. After the Titans lost to the Chargers in the first round of the 2007 playoffs, Chow was relieved of his position with the Titans. Ironically Chow’s assessment of Vince Young proved to be prophetic. Fisher benched the often injured Young in favor of Kerry Collins after week 1 of the 2008 season. Young got another chance as the Titans starter in 2009 but was ultimately released by the team in 2010 after Young had an altercation with coach Jeff Fisher. — from http://www.footballphds.com/2011/06/30/ode-to-norm-chow-a-titanic-failure/

    point of discussion:

why is it really easier for “kanes” to matriculate to a mainland institution and the “wahines” to stay home?

likewise, why is it easier for the “wahine” to acclimate to mainland travel, including elevation and cold, then “kanes”? mental? physiology? both?

some of us will readily agree that a “wahine” can be tougher than a “kane” when it comes to mental strength – yea, yea wahines cry a lot easier, but that’s not the point. enduring pain is very individual and men will never understand what a wahine goes through giving birth – all we do is plant the seed and “walk away”.

    therefore, a shout to “WAHINES”!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lemme see.. if you donate a sum to the UH Athletic Department that is greater than the distance between this planet and the next OR do meritorious deeds for the said department over the next 20 years, .. uh.. maybe… otherwise, you gotta quit the pipe dream and settle on being a fan.. you could, however, apply for a coaching position.

Better still, does the math club have coaches? Referees?

  121. Steve April 3, 2012 1:59 pm

Great Win for the Wahine! The way Jocelyn Enrique is hitting right now, I can see her being the DP, with Leisha playing 1st base. Makani right now is in somewhat of a slump, and with Sharla out, Coolen probably will need another bat in the lineup, which would be Jocelyn. What do you people think?

  122. Kekoa April 3, 2012 2:07 pm

Thank goodness we already have a good coach. Way to go Ladies, you played tough today.

Gee…I wish I had a UH Softbow hat to wear, or even a T-shirt to show my pride.

  123. oldtimer808 April 3, 2012 2:08 pm

Yes I like Enrique’s bat. She should get an opportunity to play more. Her swing is compact and she has power. Makani’s swing is too long. I’m glad Buchanan is getting a chance to play right field. The more she has the chance to hit the better she will be since she is a contact hitter and tries to keep the ball in play especially with her speed.

  124. oldtimer808 April 3, 2012 2:09 pm

Glad to finally see Aquirre making contact.

  125. Kevin April 3, 2012 2:31 pm

    Good win.

    1) Road win against a good RPI conference (PAC 12) team.

    2) Getting to a pitcher that threw 203 Ks on the season.

  126. Derek April 3, 2012 2:39 pm

Brynne Buchanan has been doing a great job at the plate and in the field. Is she a senior?

  127. mikey April 3, 2012 2:46 pm

A Great Win for the Wahine!

    COUGAR QUICK FACTS

    — BYU is 118-23 (.837) all-time against in-state opponents, including a 37-3 record vs. SUU.

    — BYU hosts Hawai’i for the first time in series history this weekend. The Rainbow Wahine are the first ranked team to play at Miller Field since Apr. 24, 2008, when No. 19 San Diego State played a doubleheader against the Cougars and the highest ranked team since No. 9 Arizona State played BYU in an NCAA Regional on May 19, 2007. Hawai’i is the highest ranked team to ever play a regular season game in Provo.

    — Picking up her second WAC Hitter of the Week award a week ago, senior Delaney Willard has emerged as an All-America candidate. The right fielder is ranked in the NCAA top-15 in six different categories, including batting average (4th, .483), slugging percentage (4th, 1.000), RBI per game (3rd, 1.45), on base percentage (5th, .578), home runs per game (12th, 0.39) and home runs (14th, 12).

    — BYU is currently on a 27-game home win streak, good for second longest in the country. Last season, the Cougars went 14-0 and they are 6-0 at home this year. BYU also has a 37-game, regular season, non-conference win streak, having not lost since Southern Utah earned a 10-5 victory on Apr. 11, 2006.

    BYU bio on Hawaii:

    HAWAI’I

    • Hawai’i is making its first-ever trip to Gail Miller Field, having never played in Provo.

    • The Rainbow Wahine are atop the WAC standings with a 5-1 record, 1.5 games ahead of the Cougars.

    • Hawai’i leads the conference in pitching with a 0.83 ERA – Fresno State is second all the way down with an ERA of 2.55. Stephanie Ricketts has an ERA of 0.90 in 21 appearances with an 18-2 record and 154 strikeouts. Kaia Parnaby has a 0.71 ERA in 12 apperances, currently with an 11-1 record.

    • The Rainbow Wahine can also hit, leading the WAC in slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs scored and home runs.

    • Hawai’i won its first 21 games of the season before losing to Texas on Mar. 13.

    • Among common opponents, BYU and Hawai’i have both defeated UMKC, Memphis, Portland State, Cal State Northridge, Idaho State, UC Santa Barbara and New Mexico State. Hawai’i also beat DePaul, a team to which the Cougars lost while Hawai’i was defeated by Texas A&M, a team BYU has both beat and lost to this season.

    UNBEATABLE AT HOME

The Cougars have the second-longest home win streak in the nation, having currently won 27 in a row, including a 14-0 season last year. BYU is 6-0 this season at Miller Field. Louisiana-Lafayette has a 31-game home win streak, currently the longest in the nation.

    GRAND OLE TIME

BYU players have hit four grand slams this season, including two by senior Delaney Willard (Cal State Northridge, Purdue) and one each by senior Stacie Toney (No. 14 Texas A&M) and freshman Megan Arnold (UMKC). The four grand slams is tied for third-most by a BYU team in a season behind five from the 2010 squad and six by the 2003 team.

This should be a great game. Now we can watch it home and it’s a free DH game.

It should be a HomeRun Galore! Go Wahine!

  130. WarriorNY April 3, 2012 3:01 pm

    MIH,

It wasn’t Math club; it was Math Team! And we were Oahu Math League B Division Champs!

Haha, I guess, I have to settle for being a fan…

  131. WarriorNY April 3, 2012 3:04 pm

    MIH, (also)

And yes, we had coaches (our math teachers)… The refs were just the people that graded our papers… I’m gonna hang on to the pipe dream as long as I can… LOL

  132. Kevin April 3, 2012 3:13 pm

Show it at the SSC? They can’t even get the ligh… (nevermind)

  133. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 3:17 pm

Tanaka says that Cayman Shutter has been suspended indefinitely.

  134. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 3:20 pm

    WarriorNY…

When I was in high school it was called Math Club.. not too many members and I don’t think they recognized doubles and singles tournaments then. I was in the Math Club, Science Club, French Club, about three social clubs and Wherever the Girls Were Clubs… I think I burned out from clubs because after high school, the only clubs I’d attend were night clubs. The typical dance and “Buy me Drink” clubs.

  136. mikey April 3, 2012 3:26 pm

Call up Rich and get some volunteers to open SSC and a clean-up crew.

I think they have the Manoa Clean-up crew volunteer list every year to clean up the UH Manoa Campus.

If not they can all go to Kevin’s house to watch the Wahine game vs BYU.

But just Imagine some fees you can collect for the Wahine game at SSC? While the hype is Hot!

  139. longdistance808 April 3, 2012 3:29 pm

Interesting point made early on in comments by d1shima (#11) about jerseys with other people’s names on them. That’s why the only jerseys I buy are customized.

If anyone sees the guy at the away football games wearing the #5 Hawaii jersey and asks “Who the hell is ‘Kern’?”, just answer, “Oh, that’s longdistance808. He starts at fan and is one of the top reserve blog lurkers.”

    ;P

Two volleyball players headed to Manoa next year — Moanalua’s Kolby Kanetake and Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Daniel Aina Jr. — were named to the AVCA’s senior All-America watch list.

Wonder if Daniel Jr. is related to Danny Aina? All-star running back out of Hilo High in 1978.

  150. PolyMom April 3, 2012 4:26 pm

I think you are right Stephen regarding Coach Chow making an emotional decision. But we all have kids and kids make mistakes. I don’t know anyone with perfect children. I know the ENTIRE team will suffer from this young mans actions. I hope well I bet Coach waits to decide after Cayman Shutters court date.

The sad thing about this situation is that when Coach Chow was at USC, he had to deal with several players who were arrested for a variety offenses including sexual assault. I applaud his quick and speedy actions. And I applaud him for giving strict discipline.

Let this be a lesson…a LIFE lesson about drinking and driving. Take a taxi if you plan are partying. If you can’t afford one they are free on Oahu. Wonder what bar or club he was drinking at. Bet the entire team will be banned for them allowing him to get that drunk. Lesson learned.

  151. Derek April 3, 2012 4:44 pm

Everybody makes decisons. Shutter made a bad one and has to pay the consequences. I believe Chow did the right thing. He said the team will be disciplined. He’s true to his word. No shortcuts.

Joe Flacco said he believes he’s the best QB in the NFL. Nice to see he’s confident, but I don’t think so. If you ask me, I think Flacco is maybe a little Wacko!!!

I was impressed with Kentucky the way they play and that defense. Joston Thomas wouldn’t even get a shot off against Anthony Davis. The athletes in the NCAA basketball tournament is impressive. UH is light years away in terms of talent level. Arnold has to get better athletes every year to upgrade. Hope he gets some good ones by the next signing day.

  152. mo808 April 3, 2012 5:05 pm

I really appreciate the way Coach Chow has handled this situation thus far with Cayman. Hopefully, it will not be a year and he will be able to rejoin the team sooner. In any case, I’m sure all involved will be better from this experience. Go Warriors!

  153. al April 3, 2012 5:17 pm

well, you set rules and regulations.

    you determine some “penal code”.

if you want a program that is squeaky clean then it starts with something like this.

you want integrity then you have to be honorable.

cayman shutter is not the example to others, it is the way we do business these days.

hopefully, at some point, probably after the court decides, a more finite suspension will be told.

  154. Jason April 3, 2012 5:20 pm

Did someone call for a math team coach? 🙂

    http://www.oahumath.org

WarriorNY: We don’t call the divisions A and B anymore, we call them “Leibniz” and “Newton.” But B division champs, that’s pretty good. Best we got when I was in school was my junior year, A division 4th place/best public school. Senior year we were A division 5th place/2nd public. I keep the plaques in my classroom. 😀

  155. slenzi April 3, 2012 5:22 pm

Good to see such support for Coach Chow, whether we agree with his discipline of QB Shutter or not. Please continue to support the coach and continue to show the love for Cayman. I believe he will get thrugh this setback.

  160. Ben A. Lurker April 3, 2012 5:57 pm

    re: Cayman Shutter

while i don’t agree with the “we all make mistakes” crowd on leniency and

let the guy play on etc i think we won’t see this guy on the field ever. Its a huge

mega huge slap on a new HC / First time HC / one month in on the job, rolling foward

with big mo in new practice regimen and then this guy pulls this 3 AM crap? No way

man. It was a time when the guys held tight and policed each other, knew where

they were head wise and kept tabs and it worked well for the team. zero incidents

for long time. For a player to be that lax about his actions this close to the start

of a brand new program is not fixable IMO – i’m not saying he is unfixable or damned

just saying he burned the bridge he had. Its toast and so is his career at UH. The guy

    is done.

  161. mo808 April 3, 2012 6:28 pm

My two cents is that if Cayman has to wait a year then so be it. If at some point after his DUI goes to trial Chow makes a determination that the suspension is less than a year then so be it. But, to say Cayman will never see the field again as a Warrior well that just lacks grace. Time will tell…

  162. tom mui April 3, 2012 6:48 pm

ST – is Ben and Steve the same person?

  163. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 7:12 pm

Cayman was indicted for DUI.. not for manslaughter or causing an accident. You cannot condemn a person for a crime that he hasn’t committed or deliberately plotted. The law doesn’t work that work that way. He just has to understand that he was very very VERY fortunate to have been caught before he had an accident. He’s got a little blemish on his record, but that doesn’t have to stain his whole life. I hope he does he right things and gets a second chance.

  164. Steve April 3, 2012 7:25 pm

tom mui – no, I am not Ben. But I do agree with some of the things he says. Whether Shutter will see the playing field, only time will tell. The ball is squarely in Shutter’s court now. If he keeps squeaky clean, attends all his alcohol classes, and does community service. I do not see why he cannot rejoin the team at some point in time. He may also need to install one of those breath alcohol test device’s in his car to be able to start it. He needs to understand, he was quite fortunate not to have hurt someone, or himself. Especially, with all the DUI accidents and deaths that have been happening lately.

  165. Ipu Man April 3, 2012 7:28 pm

You even have to watch out for sober bicyclists these days…

  166. Steve April 3, 2012 7:31 pm

TO ALL THE WARRIORS, take this as a lesson and warning. Coach Chow does not fool around. The next time, a player might not be as fortunate. Meaning, Coach Chow may not allow that player to be on the team. Coach Chow means business, DO NOT try his patience.

  167. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 7:37 pm

I think bicyclists who ride on the sidewalk and dash out across a crosswalk on busy intersections should also be arrested. That’s the last thing you expect to see coming off of the curb.

  169. al April 3, 2012 8:08 pm

i guess the part that is most agonizing is that here you come in the new man on the block. your moral standards are high, very high. you express that to your team from day one.

you treat your team with respect.

you often and very often remind the team of the moral obligation to represent hawaii, the university of hawaii, the football program, and the members of your team.

  170. mo808 April 3, 2012 8:10 pm

I’m a recent bicyclist all of three days now (gas prices on the rise and parking fees in Kailua Town lots once free–are no longer now) and I promise not to get in your way and under your wheel! 🙂

  171. al April 3, 2012 8:13 pm

with this type of discipline expected i’ll bet we reduce our penalties by at least 50%.

once this team learns the nuances of the offense, defense, and special teams concepts we’ll be as efficient as can be.

i liken the new mantra to the ways our militia used to be run.

upon completing basic training, i asked my drill sergeant why he had to be so rough. his answer was, “to prepare you boys to fight like men and if you do it right, you’ll come home.”

  172. Warrior Dave April 3, 2012 8:28 pm

Good thing society is more forgiving than people like Ben! Some of the best citizens are ones that had second chances. Colt, Pisa, Devonne are prime examples.

  173. d1shima April 3, 2012 8:35 pm

The difference is we don’t know what expectations were for those three for their “first chance” but they and the former QB2 knew what they were once their HC’s ‘splain’d it to them.

If you gotta ride on the sidewalk, and I can fully understand this, please stop at the curb before crossing even if there is a green light. People are looking for pedestrians that are already waiting there, not for a cyclist speeding from behind.

  178. kev-1 April 3, 2012 9:27 pm

I was actually hoping to hear something more decisive from Chow regarding the Shutter suspension. Although I understand keeping it open ended.

    So, how was practice today?

  179. AlaWai April 3, 2012 9:30 pm

Its now up to Cayman to show his mettle. If he is convicted, lets hope for a suspended sentence with community service. He should talk to younger students and be held to a higher standard. This is his life intersection. Does he go left or right? I hope that Cayman lets this burn into his heart and he makes the choices that will guide his life. I believe he is smart enough to realize that his choice now is more than just football. This episode will also test his team mates.

How will they show character and embrace the situation? Things like this can unite and solidify a team. I observe that Coach Chow handled this more like a father than a coach. If it was just about football, I believe Shutter would be gone and his scholarship revoked; a simple business decision. I am now more than ever proud to have Norm Chow as our coach. Character and discipline will bring the wins the fans want and start the young Warriors on the right life path.

  180. mo808 April 3, 2012 10:01 pm

MIH I really appreciate your input on this! I haven’t sought a bike as major transportation mode since oh lets say 1970 something pre-high school years. My first inclination is to ride it like a car on the streets and do the hand signals thing. I ride a cruiser so I can only go so fast. I yield to cars easily because I prefer to extend my life rather than take chances. We have bike lanes but not nearly enough in Kailua and none to speak of in Kailua Town. I am more aware of traffic now than I’ve ever been–mostly because I try to be be a good neighbor and not pi$$ people off. 🙂

  182. Ben A. Lurker April 3, 2012 10:31 pm

193 just my opinion but the cart is way out front of the horse here. You show character

by NOT being out. By being accountable from the get go, not after. All for the second chance here but its not here – its somewhere else – Bess and Colt all left there former places – and

landed and rebounded and excelled here. I am huge fan of both. What gets me is the affront and kick in the face to a new coach this kid did. He said, “screw it, i’m going out.” He made

that choice. Its not about legalistic results. Its just the me-first attitude that comes through.

Its a national story. Its the brand new coach and situation. Sure you can take a soft attitude

and let is pass with all the legal process to come and miss games etc. Betcha we see more incidents then. Toss the guy and no more incidents. May be harsh but its more harsh how he treated HC. I care more about that then this one second string player.

  183. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 10:32 pm

    mo808:

I rode a bicycle all over Japan in the 8 years I was there. I had a mountain bike customized so that I could pop of the wheels, handlebar, seat really quickly and store them all into a racing bike bag. This I was allowed to carry onto trains and that made city hopping a joy on weekends. In Japan, the pedestrian has to wary of the cyclist. I also had a landlord that would drop off keys to his spare car on weekends when I wasn’t on the road so that I could cruise along the mountains of Okayama Prefecture. When i came back, I bought a mountain bike and road along the Pearl Harbor to Waipahu bike trail three or four times a week. Great fun but the ride back home up one mile on Halawa Heights was murder! My wife isn’t a good cyclist, which is really too bad. The two of us really should get into it. Kaneohe, however isn’t as flat as Kailua.

I road alongside semis and buses in Osaka and Tokyo and never once thought to wear a helmet in Japan, but here? I’d wear a helmet.

  187. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 10:38 pm

    mo808,

Here’s something you might find interesting. In the years I was in Japan, I observed that 10-speeders and racers, when they hit a car, tent to collapse downward and the rider is drawn forward and downward into or under the vehicle… Mountain bikes tend to bounce up and throw the rider back or over the top of the car….. a mountain bike can climb the edge of a side walk, or go over a log, a racer and ten-speeder, on the otherhand, well … good luck. The cruiser is a big wheeled mountain bike without gears.

  188. mo808 April 3, 2012 10:44 pm

MIH wow you’ve experienced some really great moments bicycling! I am doing so now because it’s a healthier lifestyle and a heck of a lot more economical. I see groups of cyclists every so often on very expensive multi speed bikes and wonder — these guys are going around the island and seeing some great sights. It’s a great way to travel but traffic does make it challenging!

  189. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 10:59 pm

    mo,

Yeah.. even in groups they have had some serious accidents. Really sad. So many drivers with so little or no patience these days. But cycling is great way to rediscover the old neighborhood, or the new. Kailua is a great place to go cycling as well as Waimanalo. Places you were too tired to walk before. .. get yourself a good pocket camera with a lot of optical zoom. I bought my wife a new Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V before she went to Paris so that she could take movies, 3D (whatever that means) and panoramas as well as 16x optical zoom without having to lug around her professional equipment. 16Mp.. about $250 but worth every penny, I think.

  190. mo808 April 3, 2012 11:11 pm

MIH that’s a great idea! My oldest son Ethan is an amateur photographer so I’ll ask him what he recommends. My husband and sons have recently bought or refurbished bikes and now that the rains have cleared up we should do a family Bicycle outting to Waimanalo! Mahalo!

  191. madeinhawaii April 3, 2012 11:18 pm

    mo,

My wife is a professional landscape and flora photogapher and it was a hard decision between the Sony and the Nikon. The Nikon at Best Buy was actually cheaper as it was on sale. Originally we were going to buy it. But we are very familiar with Sony too, and my wife wanted to experiment with the 3D. Enjoy and do take a lot of family pictures. The boy will grow up really fast now and you’ll be glad you took those pictures.

anyway.. time to shower and hit the hay for me. The best to you!…

The kid made a mistake, did not think—like most young people, and a lot who should know better. Now let him learn—then let it go. He will be fine and Coach Chow did the right thing–and will do the right thing. This kid will be back after learning what to do and what not to do. Mistakes we all make—-rebounding from them is what an adult does. This team is going to go in the right direction and Cayman will be part of it in time….
