Shutter receives indefinite suspension
Head coach Norm Chow said quarterback Cayman Shutter has been suspended indefinitely and immediately from team activities in the aftermath of his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.
Shutter will remain on scholarship and be allowed to attend classes. But he will not be permitted to practice, train with the team or attend team meetings while under suspension. Chow said the suspension could last anywhere from a day through the 2012 season.
The suspension is based on violation of team rules.
“He understands there are severe consequences that need to be paid,” Chow said. “We’ve preached that. We’ve talked that. He understand stands that. Yes, he does.”

After a 12-day hiatus, the Warriors resume practicing this afternoon.
The Warriors had spent the first three practices learning the new offensive and defensive concepts. Soon up on the schedule is physical education. Head coach Norm Chow said he plans to have a scrimmage either later this week or early next week.

You should be able to embrace change while incorporating tradition.
I read an article yesterday about the unis, and there was a comment from an Oregon exec. and he said that their vision is to change every four years, so that every student athlete that comes into the school can have a unique experience and be a part of. That’s a neat concept. How realistic? Well when you have the funds and connections that Oregon has, why not?

#23 Kevin, We just “ruled” the game against New Mexico State ON ESPN, and they dropped us. Oh well. And you are right. The RPI is more important but ESPN has a lot of influence, especially at the end of the season.
Too many quacks in the uniform design department. And I think unis and helmets are different art departments, or last I heard. Have to be careful, otherwise might get da slippah from someone.

Yes I like Enrique’s bat. She should get an opportunity to play more. Her swing is compact and she has power. Makani’s swing is too long. I’m glad Buchanan is getting a chance to play right field. The more she has the chance to hit the better she will be since she is a contact hitter and tries to keep the ball in play especially with her speed.

When I was in high school it was called Math Club.. not too many members and I don’t think they recognized doubles and singles tournaments then. I was in the Math Club, Science Club, French Club, about three social clubs and Wherever the Girls Were Clubs… I think I burned out from clubs because after high school, the only clubs I’d attend were night clubs. The typical dance and “Buy me Drink” clubs.
I broke the law and the law won.
Call up Rich and get some volunteers to open SSC and a clean-up crew.
I think they have the Manoa Clean-up crew volunteer list every year to clean up the UH Manoa Campus.

Looks like UH isn’t the only team dealing with players getting suspended. One of Utah’s starting DBs has been suspended which has resulted in former Warrior Lewis Walker, who transferred to Utah, moving into the starting position.

I think you are right Stephen regarding Coach Chow making an emotional decision. But we all have kids and kids make mistakes. I don’t know anyone with perfect children. I know the ENTIRE team will suffer from this young mans actions. I hope well I bet Coach waits to decide after Cayman Shutters court date.
The sad thing about this situation is that when Coach Chow was at USC, he had to deal with several players who were arrested for a variety offenses including sexual assault. I applaud his quick and speedy actions. And I applaud him for giving strict discipline.
Let this be a lesson…a LIFE lesson about drinking and driving. Take a taxi if you plan are partying. If you can’t afford one they are free on Oahu. Wonder what bar or club he was drinking at. Bet the entire team will be banned for them allowing him to get that drunk. Lesson learned.
Everybody makes decisons. Shutter made a bad one and has to pay the consequences. I believe Chow did the right thing. He said the team will be disciplined. He’s true to his word. No shortcuts.
Joe Flacco said he believes he’s the best QB in the NFL. Nice to see he’s confident, but I don’t think so. If you ask me, I think Flacco is maybe a little Wacko!!!
I was impressed with Kentucky the way they play and that defense. Joston Thomas wouldn’t even get a shot off against Anthony Davis. The athletes in the NCAA basketball tournament is impressive. UH is light years away in terms of talent level. Arnold has to get better athletes every year to upgrade. Hope he gets some good ones by the next signing day.
I really appreciate the way Coach Chow has handled this situation thus far with Cayman. Hopefully, it will not be a year and he will be able to rejoin the team sooner. In any case, I’m sure all involved will be better from this experience. Go Warriors!

WarriorNY: We don’t call the divisions A and B anymore, we call them “Leibniz” and “Newton.” But B division champs, that’s pretty good. Best we got when I was in school was my junior year, A division 4th place/best public school. Senior year we were A division 5th place/2nd public. I keep the plaques in my classroom. 😀

while i don’t agree with the “we all make mistakes” crowd on leniency and
let the guy play on etc i think we won’t see this guy on the field ever. Its a huge
mega huge slap on a new HC / First time HC / one month in on the job, rolling foward
with big mo in new practice regimen and then this guy pulls this 3 AM crap? No way
man. It was a time when the guys held tight and policed each other, knew where
they were head wise and kept tabs and it worked well for the team. zero incidents
for long time. For a player to be that lax about his actions this close to the start
of a brand new program is not fixable IMO – i’m not saying he is unfixable or damned
just saying he burned the bridge he had. Its toast and so is his career at UH. The guy
is done.
My two cents is that if Cayman has to wait a year then so be it. If at some point after his DUI goes to trial Chow makes a determination that the suspension is less than a year then so be it. But, to say Cayman will never see the field again as a Warrior well that just lacks grace. Time will tell…

Cayman was indicted for DUI.. not for manslaughter or causing an accident. You cannot condemn a person for a crime that he hasn’t committed or deliberately plotted. The law doesn’t work that work that way. He just has to understand that he was very very VERY fortunate to have been caught before he had an accident. He’s got a little blemish on his record, but that doesn’t have to stain his whole life. I hope he does he right things and gets a second chance.
tom mui – no, I am not Ben. But I do agree with some of the things he says. Whether Shutter will see the playing field, only time will tell. The ball is squarely in Shutter’s court now. If he keeps squeaky clean, attends all his alcohol classes, and does community service. I do not see why he cannot rejoin the team at some point in time. He may also need to install one of those breath alcohol test device’s in his car to be able to start it. He needs to understand, he was quite fortunate not to have hurt someone, or himself. Especially, with all the DUI accidents and deaths that have been happening lately.
You even have to watch out for sober bicyclists these days…
TO ALL THE WARRIORS, take this as a lesson and warning. Coach Chow does not fool around. The next time, a player might not be as fortunate. Meaning, Coach Chow may not allow that player to be on the team. Coach Chow means business, DO NOT try his patience.
I think bicyclists who ride on the sidewalk and dash out across a crosswalk on busy intersections should also be arrested. That’s the last thing you expect to see coming off of the curb.

i guess the part that is most agonizing is that here you come in the new man on the block. your moral standards are high, very high. you express that to your team from day one.

upon completing basic training, i asked my drill sergeant why he had to be so rough. his answer was, “to prepare you boys to fight like men and if you do it right, you’ll come home.”
Good thing society is more forgiving than people like Ben! Some of the best citizens are ones that had second chances. Colt, Pisa, Devonne are prime examples.

If you gotta ride on the sidewalk, and I can fully understand this, please stop at the curb before crossing even if there is a green light. People are looking for pedestrians that are already waiting there, not for a cyclist speeding from behind.
I was actually hoping to hear something more decisive from Chow regarding the Shutter suspension. Although I understand keeping it open ended.
So, how was practice today?
Its now up to Cayman to show his mettle. If he is convicted, lets hope for a suspended sentence with community service. He should talk to younger students and be held to a higher standard. This is his life intersection. Does he go left or right? I hope that Cayman lets this burn into his heart and he makes the choices that will guide his life. I believe he is smart enough to realize that his choice now is more than just football. This episode will also test his team mates.
How will they show character and embrace the situation? Things like this can unite and solidify a team. I observe that Coach Chow handled this more like a father than a coach. If it was just about football, I believe Shutter would be gone and his scholarship revoked; a simple business decision. I am now more than ever proud to have Norm Chow as our coach. Character and discipline will bring the wins the fans want and start the young Warriors on the right life path.
MIH I really appreciate your input on this! I haven’t sought a bike as major transportation mode since oh lets say 1970 something pre-high school years. My first inclination is to ride it like a car on the streets and do the hand signals thing. I ride a cruiser so I can only go so fast. I yield to cars easily because I prefer to extend my life rather than take chances. We have bike lanes but not nearly enough in Kailua and none to speak of in Kailua Town. I am more aware of traffic now than I’ve ever been–mostly because I try to be be a good neighbor and not pi$$ people off. 🙂

193 just my opinion but the cart is way out front of the horse here. You show character
by NOT being out. By being accountable from the get go, not after. All for the second chance here but its not here – its somewhere else – Bess and Colt all left there former places – and
landed and rebounded and excelled here. I am huge fan of both. What gets me is the affront and kick in the face to a new coach this kid did. He said, “screw it, i’m going out.” He made
that choice. Its not about legalistic results. Its just the me-first attitude that comes through.
Its a national story. Its the brand new coach and situation. Sure you can take a soft attitude
and let is pass with all the legal process to come and miss games etc. Betcha we see more incidents then. Toss the guy and no more incidents. May be harsh but its more harsh how he treated HC. I care more about that then this one second string player.

I rode a bicycle all over Japan in the 8 years I was there. I had a mountain bike customized so that I could pop of the wheels, handlebar, seat really quickly and store them all into a racing bike bag. This I was allowed to carry onto trains and that made city hopping a joy on weekends. In Japan, the pedestrian has to wary of the cyclist. I also had a landlord that would drop off keys to his spare car on weekends when I wasn’t on the road so that I could cruise along the mountains of Okayama Prefecture. When i came back, I bought a mountain bike and road along the Pearl Harbor to Waipahu bike trail three or four times a week. Great fun but the ride back home up one mile on Halawa Heights was murder! My wife isn’t a good cyclist, which is really too bad. The two of us really should get into it. Kaneohe, however isn’t as flat as Kailua.
I road alongside semis and buses in Osaka and Tokyo and never once thought to wear a helmet in Japan, but here? I’d wear a helmet.

Here’s something you might find interesting. In the years I was in Japan, I observed that 10-speeders and racers, when they hit a car, tent to collapse downward and the rider is drawn forward and downward into or under the vehicle… Mountain bikes tend to bounce up and throw the rider back or over the top of the car….. a mountain bike can climb the edge of a side walk, or go over a log, a racer and ten-speeder, on the otherhand, well … good luck. The cruiser is a big wheeled mountain bike without gears.
MIH wow you’ve experienced some really great moments bicycling! I am doing so now because it’s a healthier lifestyle and a heck of a lot more economical. I see groups of cyclists every so often on very expensive multi speed bikes and wonder — these guys are going around the island and seeing some great sights. It’s a great way to travel but traffic does make it challenging!

Yeah.. even in groups they have had some serious accidents. Really sad. So many drivers with so little or no patience these days. But cycling is great way to rediscover the old neighborhood, or the new. Kailua is a great place to go cycling as well as Waimanalo. Places you were too tired to walk before. .. get yourself a good pocket camera with a lot of optical zoom. I bought my wife a new Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V before she went to Paris so that she could take movies, 3D (whatever that means) and panoramas as well as 16x optical zoom without having to lug around her professional equipment. 16Mp.. about $250 but worth every penny, I think.
MIH that’s a great idea! My oldest son Ethan is an amateur photographer so I’ll ask him what he recommends. My husband and sons have recently bought or refurbished bikes and now that the rains have cleared up we should do a family Bicycle outting to Waimanalo! Mahalo!

My wife is a professional landscape and flora photogapher and it was a hard decision between the Sony and the Nikon. The Nikon at Best Buy was actually cheaper as it was on sale. Originally we were going to buy it. But we are very familiar with Sony too, and my wife wanted to experiment with the 3D. Enjoy and do take a lot of family pictures. The boy will grow up really fast now and you’ll be glad you took those pictures.

The kid made a mistake, did not think—like most young people, and a lot who should know better. Now let him learn—then let it go. He will be fine and Coach Chow did the right thing–and will do the right thing. This kid will be back after learning what to do and what not to do. Mistakes we all make—-rebounding from them is what an adult does. This team is going to go in the right direction and Cayman will be part of it in time….
