Spring ball

Three months after Norm Chow was hired as head coach, a first sampling of his work will be on display when the Warriors begin practicing this afternoon.

It also will be interesting to see the impact of the early-morning workouts for the players.

* * * * *

What timing. Today also is the first day of spring.

* * * * *

Happy birthday to PowderPuff. In her honor, may we all have a moment of … screaming!

    Good morning everyone!

    Good news on Midnight!

    Thanks Kekoa!

Sorry, I won’t make the cattle call today. Got a bug with body aches and chills that make me wake up 4-5 times a night. No other symptoms though, voice OK, no cough or sore throat, no runny nose. But I should keep my germs at home. [sigh] 😐

What an emotional roller coaster I am on today . . .

Shed a tear this morning after watching one of my all time favorite NFL players retire from the game. I tip my hat to Hines Ward for always playing his heart out. I am sad to see him go. I still think Pittsburgh should have at least kept him for one more year. He is a solid veteran receiver whose productivity went down, not because of eroding skills, but because of emerging young talent. He could have still been a valuable teammate.

On the other end of the spectrum, I can hardly control my excitement in anticipation of the first Warrior practice of the spring. I wish I could go this afternoon. That’s okay, because I know ST and some other wise posters here will share some solid insight about the practice.

  25. homey ℞ March 20, 2012 9:07 am

  70. Old School Dave March 20, 2012 12:06 pm

I’m sure the offensive linemen are looking forward to the emphasis on run blocking and getting after defenders instead of waiting for them. Heard that there were only 2-3 running plays in UH’s game plan last season.

YAY! 🙂 Can’t wait to see the coverage of the practice today on the news. Hope everyone’s having fun at the cc.

  78. Bowwar March 20, 2012 12:31 pm

Really don’t care what kind of offense we have under Chow anymore…Just win baby!

  79. Derek March 20, 2012 1:03 pm

If the Wahine softball team want to move up in the rankings, they have to start to dominate, not these close 1-0, 2-1, or 3-2 type games. Yeah, just win baby but looking at big picture all ranked teams have good pitchers or great pitchers. The difference is the hitting or should I say the clutch hitting. I agree that Lii’lii should move up to 5th spot.

  80. Bigislandkurt March 20, 2012 1:05 pm

    #72 Old skoo Dave…

I agree 100 percent! The olinemen gotta be excited about this. Run blocking certainly increases the smash mouth factor…with they being the smashers of course.

Spring ball is here my friends! yeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh! Go Warriors.

Chow forgot to introduce Tuioti. Classic Chow. Someday, this same thing will happen to him. Oh, wait, it happened to him. Oh, wait, it happened to him often, at all the schools who refused to hire him as head coach. UH got a real weiner, uh, oops, i mean, winner, in Chow.

We are so lucky to have such a highly sought after head coach like Norm Chow. All the big D1 schools and NFL teams wanted him as their head coach. How did we, mere islanders, become so lucky, landing this much sought after coaching talent they call the Chowman. We are blessed. Chow’s ability to pay attention to detail is flawless. The Tuioti incident is a classic example of his sharp attention to detail. Good job, coach. Another fine example of the correctness of Jim Donovan’s ability to select top-of-their game talent for the UH. Kudos to Donovan too.

  107. tom mui March 20, 2012 4:55 pm

  108. al March 20, 2012 4:56 pm

so i, too was at that dac inaugural get together.

true, chow inadvertently forgot to introduce tony tuioti. i believe it was his wife who made him aware of this.

classic chow moment did occur as he apologized to tony over and over again. while apologizing he also bowed to tony in the ways of the old orient. it showed a lot of class on his part.

  109. al March 20, 2012 4:59 pm

  118. Steve March 20, 2012 6:46 pm

Ipu Man (#117) – Do not worry about Coach Chow, he gets his daily excercise, brisk walk arould the lower campus. Starts out at the UHAD, walks down the sidewalk between Cook Field and the RWSS, goes around Les Murakami Stadium, around Stan Sheriff Center, back to UHAD. Does this about 2 or 3 times.

  119. jm2375 March 20, 2012 7:11 pm

  123. Steve March 20, 2012 8:11 pm

Ronald Reagan was President from age 70 to 78. That is perhaps the most demanding job in the U.S. Norm Chow is a youngster at age 64. I don’t think the stresses placed on him can compare with that of a U.S. President. Chow is just fine. He will do a heck of a job. Looking forward to watching his team in the fall.

Wow! Just awoke from a nap after the afternoon in the sun after the cc.

Great seeing everyone at the Maple Garden today. 🙂

Lotsa hootin’ and-a hollerin’ at the grass practice field from players and the high-energy coaching staff. Coach Chow seemed comfortable with allowing his staff to maintain a very quick pace moving from period to period.

For those who have been to practice during the past 2 regimes, the most noticeable thing was seeing just one QB throwing the ball at any time.

Didn’t notice a lot of one-on-one fine tuning going on but on the very first day of hitting the field the goal may be to get film on “where you at” and go from there.

    Impressed with the redshirt QB…

  132. kev-1 March 20, 2012 9:56 pm

Surprisingly quiet here on the blog, especially following the first day of spring practice. What gives?

  133. kev-1 March 20, 2012 9:59 pm

oh, I see d1 . . . the regulars feasted, watched practice, and went home and fell victim to the late afternoon naps!

  134. kev-1 March 20, 2012 10:00 pm

which QB you like d1? Graham?

  135. d1shima March 20, 2012 10:16 pm

    kev-1,

QB1 and QB2 got most of the reps and looked pretty comfortable with the WC-type passes that will be the staple of the offense.

QBx Graham spent most of the afternoon with his nose in his notes and asking questions but when he did have a ball in his hand he made you dream about 2013! 😉

  136. d1shima March 20, 2012 10:17 pm

…saw some nice routes for and setup by the TE’s and FB’s. Those will be fun!

  137. kev-1 March 20, 2012 10:22 pm

RE: QB Graham . . . just from seeing him in the background on the news coverage, he looks the most like a D1 QB. Saw him throw one crisp pass. I am a Gravesdigger, so it will be tough for me come next season if Graham outshines the rest.

  138. Supastoke March 20, 2012 10:34 pm

    Good report! K-bye

  139. redwarrior March 20, 2012 10:35 pm

    #132

Took in practice today. My thoughts were that the pace of practice was off the charts… also the coaches were making some serious noise.

On the QBs…I thought that Shutter spread the ball around well and showed nice touch on the deep ball. Graham still looked a little green to me…had some accuracy issues but a strong arm.
