Chut Yo Moutt

Princess Leila reports that Chut Yo Moutt won today’s Super Games relay race.
Each player had to place his head on the bottom of the handle of a baseball bat, run five times around in one direction, then five times around in the other direction, then sprint to a marker 10 yards away and then back to the starting line.
Rocky Savaiigaea’s Chut Yo Mouttt team won in 2 minutes, 40 seconds.
Team members are Vaughn Meatoga, Richard Torres, Matagisila Lefiti, Kenny Estes, Billy Ray Stutzmann, Alema Tachibana, Jett Jasper, Joey Cadiz, Joeseph Malabuyoc, Steven Rodenhurst.

June Jones called to say that Texas A&M is looking into canceling an agreement in which the Aggies and SMU were to play a four-game series. A&M would have to pay a lot of money in penalties, Jones said.
“That should help set up an SMU-Hawaiβ€˜i series,” Jones said.

More than 1,500 people attended the Barefoot League’s anniversary block party this past Saturday.
Among the attendees were Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullins, Wayne Hunter, Timmy Chang, Chad Owens, Hauoli Wong, Chris Fuamatu-Maafala, Maa Tanuvasa, Vince Manuwai, Natasha Kai, Konishki, Leonard Peters, Troy Polamalu, James Farrier and Ryan Clark.
The former UH players weren’t supposed to sign autographs, but they did so, anyway. Before leaving, Colt actually went down a long line, signing autographs.
Here’s Polamalu:

Why were the former UH players NOT supposed to sign autographs?? Doesn’t make sense.

  2. 702WarriorNation February 11, 2009 7:42 am

If JD can’t get SMU, why not Texas A&M?
    Good morning!

  3. Southbay February 11, 2009 7:43 am

Hawaii vs SMU … set it up!

  4. Stretch February 11, 2009 7:44 am

Damn…. I thought that you were going to say Texas A&M wants to come play Hawaii instead.

  5. Southbay February 11, 2009 7:45 am

Stephen … any news on the possible new coaches? Looking forward to seeing who MAC is bringing onboard.

  7. Stretch February 11, 2009 7:46 am

If UH plays SMU, they should wait 4 years. JJ played a lot of young players this past season so in a few years, they should be a lot better than they performed this past season.

  8. Da Punchbowl Kid February 11, 2009 7:47 am

    Top Ten!

    Good morning Tsaikos! Top 10?

  11. Da Punchbowl Kid February 11, 2009 7:49 am

UH vs. SMU is an inevitability. Who’s gonna SMU who?

  12. djmitcho February 11, 2009 7:50 am

Whew, barely. I wish I could have been at Barefoot League’s block party. After the CC in January that’s where I went to add to my collection of BL shirts. I love their designs.

  13. djmitcho February 11, 2009 7:51 am

I can see it now…Mack laying the smackdown on JJ and the mustangs

  14. FloridaTed February 11, 2009 7:58 am

    Morning, Gang,

Finally back home, good things keep happening.

I wouldn’t mind an SMU series, should be interesting. The old vs the new, bring it on.

  15. Kekoa February 11, 2009 8:02 am

My life is over…I bombed out on a sports trivia question on Bob Hogue’s show a few minutes ago. Now I’ll never ever know the feeling of wearing his last Pac West T-shirt…(tsai).

  16. haka February 11, 2009 8:03 am

I don’t see the big deal playing JJ and SMU. It doesn’t excite me at all. Plus, they are the only ones that will benefit. We need to schedule big name teams and SMU is not one of them.

Forget the “I love Hawaii…let’s play so we can recruit your athletes” sales pitch.

    Now, A&M would be great!

  17. rog February 11, 2009 8:04 am

Don’t understand why everyone wants to play SMU? What does Hawaii have to gain from a game with them?

  18. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 8:06 am

A&M would be great. And if they back out, UH makes money.

  19. addahknowjoe February 11, 2009 8:07 am

Honestly, playing SMU is simply for entertainment purposes only. It doesn’t help us forward our program.

We should be using those open slots to play bigger programs that can garner us notoriety and respect.

    Anyway- gmornin’ Tsaikz!

  20. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 8:08 am

By the way, it looks like Sun God is trying to get to the West Coast. His wife got a job at Stanford.

  21. addahknowjoe February 11, 2009 8:09 am

    kekoa- was that you?

  22. rog February 11, 2009 8:10 am

I say no to SMU and yes to A&M if possible. SMU is going to ask for a lot of money from us and I don’t see it as being worth the game.

  23. addahknowjoe February 11, 2009 8:12 am

So what’s stronger in the Sun God; his love for his wife? Or loyalty to JJ?

  24. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 8:13 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

    Top 20??

While I wouldn’t mind playing SMU – it would be a big draw as long as JJ is there – it doesn’t do much to add to UH’s SoS, just bragging rights as to who the better mid-major is. Just like playing BYU or Utah. The BCS don’t wanna come here to play. They make way more money staying home and have no shortage of teams that want to play them. If A&M is willing to pay substantial penalties to get out of playing a game, that’s what, a couple of hours’ bus ride away, what makes you think they’d be willing to endure an 8 hour plane ride? I personally hope to never see another Big 10 crybaby in Aloha Stadium again during the regular season.
    *stepping off the soap box*

Gotta go do some work. Back to lurking.

Correia is also part of the trivia question: How many former starting Saint Louis quarterbacks played Division I football at the same time?

  37. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 8:25 am

Answer: Four (Darnell Arceneaux, Jason Gesser, Timmy Chang and Joe Correia)
Correia also played on that Pearl City team that went to the Little League World Series.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid February 11, 2009 8:26 am

  49. labrat February 11, 2009 8:36 am

Good man that JJ still thinking about Hawaii. Getting SMU to schedule UH should ease the scheduling burdon for JD. So many D1 programs afraid to come here. Even ones who think they should be number one in the country. I would rather see UH play D1 team than D2. And it would be a fun game to watch.

  50. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 8:36 am

Actually, Glanville is the one who gave him that name.
After practices, Reinebold would take off his shirt and stretch out on the grass, doing something that resembled yoga.
When Glanville was asked about a defensive coverage, he’d smile, and say: Why don’t you ask Sun God over there?

  70. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 8:59 am

Don’t forget UH still has some DB recruits from last year who either redshirted or played sparingly:
    Jeramy Bryant

    Lewis Walker
    Kawika Ornellas

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid February 11, 2009 9:06 am

As other posters have mentioned it makes no sense for us to play SMU. Can you imagine how many local or American Samoa recruits JJ could get by saying that SMU will play in Hawaii twice in four years? Let’s not make things any easier for SMU.

  73. TOM February 11, 2009 9:08 am

SMU and A&M are both D-1 schools. It looks better if we play either than some AA school.

There is some thought that we should play giants. I suggest that it is somewhat like Chaminade in basketball. A Virginia, perhaps, but that is once in a lifetime; the rest of the time it just looks bad, if not discouraging.

I do not suggest playing the Little Sisters of the Poor but let’s not get into a bunch of mismatches until we get to the point where our budget, personnel, depth can assure us that we are not in a horrible mismatch.

    Just my 2 cents.

  74. YpoWarrior February 11, 2009 9:11 am

ST, Was SMU recruiting in Hawaii this past season? I didn’t see any recruits from Hawaii (except for the kid from Samoa).

  75. Albow February 11, 2009 9:13 am

homey – hmmm, they had to do that thing on 2/14, kinda sucks, i mean even do it on sunday might’ve been a better option w/ monday being a holiday. oh wells, maybe i’ll be lucky e-nuf to c some highlights on the news. what you think of BJ in the summer, me thinks he should just stick to the 155’s, i mean he’s got no realistic shot (unless he gets lucky)when GSP balloons to 185 and he stays around 168, almost a 20 lb difference, too tough to overcome. i’ll cheer him on anyway but that’s rough…and to see that he only takes away $1 million from a fight that must’ve brought in at leat 60 million, that’s a crime.

  89. homey β„ž February 11, 2009 9:41 am

Didn’t he only take in $125,000?

  91. al β„’ February 11, 2009 9:44 am

smu – good for the gate should be sellouts. it would certainly be one of those we must win at all costs. great for recruiting since we stomp the same grounds; samoa, hawaii, texas, west coast. easy access on a charter flight going direct to dallas is better than la tech.

other non bcs opponents i’d like to see – byu is our natural “rival” has been and will be forever. utah a great matchup with another top notch ex-wac member. both of these would be recruiting wars as well.

pac-10 – well we get em once a year. another would be great.

unlv – just an excuse to go up there to play every year.

how about some big 12 teams?

  92. al β„’ February 11, 2009 9:46 am

someone reported that bj got an additional 1 million as part of his share of the ppv monies.

  93. owen-16 February 11, 2009 9:47 am

125 for the actual fight, and a percentage of the PPV and other promotional stuff adds it up to $1 mil, but that’s still less than 2% of ppv sales, who knows what DW made off of merchandise and other stuff

  94. homey β„ž February 11, 2009 9:48 am

not sure how long the HI bowl contract is w/ the pac10, but gonna be kinda ironic if the 2 years we get em, no more enough pac 10 teams to qualify. next year’s gonna be even tougher than this year w/ us having what the 7th team, yikes. w/ that being said, hows about oregon since they ain’t afraid to play boise or utah for that matter. how about ucla or arizona, kinda want to see that too. our kids are gonna go to these schools whether we play them or not, so we might as well play em, could be wrong though…

agree with you on more Big 12 teams.

teams like Texas Tech ( nearly same offense, but maybe more talented players ), Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska.

i remember going to Honolulu Stadium and watching Oklahoma, Nebraska, USC and like powers where the coach played their 1st team well into the 4th qtr and walked away with a victory, but not a blow out.

faced with such talent, UH players “played with a lot of heart” cause they were smaller, lighter, and slower than their opponents – hope our current Warriors and all future Warrios to be can play with such heart and passion

one thing that escapes many is that Hawaii is relatively a “young” school playing in a full college schedule compared to others who have nearly a century or more of experience – was it AD Paul Duram(sp) that started it?

    About scheduling SMU:

I don’t mind SMU on the schedule so as long as it’s in lieu of an FCS (1-AA) team. It’s not that I hold SMU is such low regards, as I think they have a chance of getting better over the years, but I personally would rather play SMU than teams like Charleston Southern or some Sisters of the Poor institution (no disrespect intended to those smaller schools).

Now if we have both SMU and a 1-AA on the schedule the same year, that comes off as serious dilution of the schedule unless the Mustangs are gonna be “that good” when we play them.

I think we should be going after low- to middle-tier BCS schools that match up well with UH and try to get home-and-home with them; perhaps throwing in the occasional powerhouse here and there. I’m talking teams like Vanderbilt, Baylor, NCSU and half of the Big East. Most of those schools have no qualms with us going to their house, it’s just that we have to convince them to come to Honolulu which is the problem.

Article about a UH track recruit–sounds like a good athlete!

Entering the season as the No. 4 high jumper in the state of California, Lodi High’s Samantha Balentine was getting plenty of looks from colleges hoping to entice the senior.

While Cal and Nevada-Reno made good offers, in the end, Balentine went with the University of Hawaii. On Tuesday, in Lodi track coach Robert Winterhalter’s classroom, she signed a letter of intent to compete for the Division I school.

Hawaii produced heptathlon All-Americans Annett Wichmann last year and also has filtered through its fair share of quality high jumpers. The success Balentine has the opportunity to achieve on the track, paired with Hawaii having a kinesiology program, which is what she plans to major in, made Hawaii very appealing.

Balentine also talked to 2005 Lodi graduate Samantha Weaver, who is entering her senior year as a pole vaulter for Hawaii. Hearing about her experiences, along with a visit to the school two weeks ago, sealed her decision to become a Rainbow Wahine.

“I went down and met the team and the coaches,” she said. “They were nice. The school was really nice.”

Article about how some bowl games might not survive this economic downturn. It is good that the Hawaii Bowl has the backing of ESPN and Sheraton.

A bunch of bowls, particularly the smaller, community-based ones, might bite it by the time football season rolls around. Sure, this recession has brought myriad negatives to America. But credit it with at least one positive if it shaves bowl season by a handful of games.

Why the potential problems? For most bowls, corporate sponsorships are critical to maintaining financial solvency. Given their issues in the rest of the world, some companies are reconsidering the value of pumping money into sports.

Part of the confidence comes from a couple of safety nets that are huge benefits for bowls. First, each has a television contract, which provides significant revenue that will continue for the length of each game’s network deal. Six games, including the New Mexico Bowl, are owned and operated by ESPN Plus, an arm of the most powerful force in sports. If ESPN needs three hours of pre-Christmas programming and wants these less popular bowls to continue, then they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

“No question, it’s a huge factor,” Hoolahan said of ESPN. “And it’s going to become a bigger and bigger part of things.”

  145. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 1:10 pm

I think bowls are costly, anyway.
The mandatory hotel stays. The bonuses. The prizes. Don’t many schools lose money going to lower-paying bowls?

  146. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 1:20 pm

how many out of state Notre Dame fans actually came to the bowl this year? thats something to consider. ND is one the big name schools with many boosters and fans. if they couldn’t bring a lot of fans during this economic situation, it might not look good if Hawaii wasn’t in the game and there were 2 much smaller named/supported schools in the bowl.

  147. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 1:27 pm

The best gauge is Wisconsin. Let’s see how many fans it brings this year.

  148. Garret February 11, 2009 1:28 pm

The new TV deals and expanded stadiums will make it much harder to get the big names like Texas, Oklahoma, etc., that people mentioned above to come to Aloha Stadium. Texas now makes more than $5 million per home game, the SEC schools will make that number or more per home game when their new TV deal starts, etc. When you are talking about a public institution that needs to fund its athletic programs with football money, giving up even a single home game isn’t really possible.

UH could try to do home-and-home deals, but JD already said that UH didn’t want to travel to teams that are at the national title contender level. Plus, many teams are now trying to get 2-for-1 deals, so one game at Aloha Stadium for 2 at their stadiums. And I don’t think that UH could afford to lose out on home game revenue by scheduling those types of series.

I really like the late-season nonconference home games against big schools. The offense tends to be better late in the season than early, so UH can pull off upsets or at least come close (Cincinnati). However, that has to be with conferences that do not have conference championship games–so, rule out Big 12 and SEC schools but Pac-10 schools would be ideal.

  149. Garret February 11, 2009 1:31 pm

    ST,

You are correct, most schools lose money when going to lower-paying bowls. I know that Notre Dame lost a lot of money by going to the Hawaii Bowl. I don’t mind if a ton of lower-paying bowls go away…as long as that doesn’t include the Hawaii Bowl.

  150. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 1:34 pm

    Stephen,
Good point. They would always bring so many fans, the stadium would be red. Now if we could only get our fans to wear our school colors. Green or White. How hard is that? (don’t answer that, i know it’s obviously too hard)

  151. Garret February 11, 2009 1:35 pm

Wisconsin packed the stadium at their UNLV game in 2007. I remember that UH played at UNLV a week or two after Wisconsin and the Vegas papers reported that Wisconsin brought more fans to Vegas than UH brought! Of course, UH already has a lot of fans there. Tickets were apparently in greater demand for the Wisconsin game in Vegas than the UH game…so Wisconsin fans traveled really well to that game!

  152. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 1:38 pm

    Garret,
my friend actually bought his UNLV vs UH game tickets from a Wisconsin fan. For them, its hard to get tickets to their home games, so what they do is buy season tickets to other team’s games that they’re playing at and going to and then sell the rest.

  153. Garret February 11, 2009 1:43 pm

If this rule change is made, the refs would apply dead ball penalties to the play that occurred, which would really change celebrations after TDs. For example, Stutz punting the ball after his TD vs. BYU would result in the TD taken away! At least they didn’t make the penalties apply as live-ball fouls now, but it sounds like they might do this in the near future.

Unsportsmanlike conduct fouls were another main topic of discussion. The committee confirmed its rules in this area and developed a philosophy to help guide officials and coaches. The group also gave serious consideration to applying these fouls as live-ball fouls, which would penalize the offending team at the spot of the foul. The committee plans to continue to monitor this for possible future implementation and developed a statement to distribute and include in the rules book (attached to this release).

  168. Garret February 11, 2009 3:06 pm

I do like these other rule changes:

In other committee actions, the committee:

β€’ Redefined the rules for roughing the kicker. Now, if the punter carries the ball outside the tackle box, he loses protections provided as a kicker.

β€’ Approved a request to allow teams, when approved by the conference office and agreed to by both teams, to wear colored jerseys as long as they are clearly contrasting in color. When agreement is unable to be reached, the visiting team shall wear white.

  170. Garret February 11, 2009 3:08 pm

Eastern Washington was hit with major NCAA violations…these violations occurred while the now-Washington State coach was their head coach, and one of the penalties will apply to Washington State. Losing their head coach for the start of practice could hurt Washington State’s preparation to start the season…and UH plays Washington State early this season!

The violations occurred when current WSU head coach Paul Wulff was the head coach at Eastern, and at least one of the penalties will follow him to Pullman this year.

One of the penalties is that Wulff will not be allowed contact with his WSU football team the first three days of practice this fall.

The biggest penalty on Eastern is that the school will not be allowed to participate in the playoffs following the 2009 season.

  171. Garret February 11, 2009 3:11 pm

The recession has hit Fresno State’s Athletic Department hard…while I don’t like Fresno State, I do want the WAC to be as strong as possible so this isn’t good news.

The past 18 months have been challenging. Boeh says the department was on track as of Dec. 31 for an operating deficit of nearly $1.2 million this fiscal year.

This comes on top of a nearly $1.9 million operating deficit in 2007-08, a year that, on a competitive level, was probably the most successful in school history.

What makes this crisis different is a national recession of stunning suddenness and severity.

Simply put, Fresno State’s funding and operational model needs major repair, yet is difficult to change.

Travel costs are oppressive but largely untouchable — the Western Athletic Conference extends from Honolulu to upstate Louisiana, which is like a league anchored on one end by San Diego and the other by Bangor, Maine.

The expense of about 250 scholarships, 450 athletes and 19 sports is hard to reduce — Title IX mandates and NCAA rules eliminate or hamstring local decision-making.

And each of the funding streams that Fresno State athletics has come to depend on — ticket sales, gifts, the Bulldog Foundation’s annual fund drive, even a modest stipend from the university — is being hammered by the recession.

Reinhardt, a Bulldog Foundation member for about a half-century, sums up the state of Fresno State athletics: “It’s very scary.”

  172. Committed Road Warrior February 11, 2009 3:11 pm

Approved a request to allow teams, when approved by the conference office and agreed to by both teams, to wear colored jerseys as long as they are clearly contrasting in color. When agreement is unable to be reached, the visiting team shall wear white.

I suspect this was done in light of the USC-UCLA publicity from last year? I think another team did this last year too (Southern Miss or Troy, one of them, I think).

  173. Garret February 11, 2009 3:14 pm

It is a good thing that Fresno State has a new student fee to support athletics…or their situation would be so bad that the people calling for them to drop down to Division II would have a stronger argument. The students of UH seem to resist these type of fees, but Fresno State desperately needs this $1.3 mil in student fee revenue for athletics.

Fresno State officials shudder to imagine this year’s budget without the higher student fee approved last spring despite some campus uproar. The increase went into effect in fall 2008 and is expected to raise about $1.3 million for athletics. Without it, athletics would be looking at a $2.5 million hole.

This year’s deficit comes on top of the significant operating deficit in 2007-08. The irony: Last year was one of unprecedented competitive success.

Fresno State won its first Commissioner’s Cup, signifying the WAC’s top program in 2007-08. The football team beat Georgia Tech in the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl. The women’s basketball team made the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The softball team went to the NCAA Tournament for a national-record 27th straight year.

And, of course, the Wonderdogs won the NCAA baseball title.

  174. Garret February 11, 2009 3:16 pm

Other WAC schools are in trouble also, with Utah State is really bad shape. If their attendance problem doesn’t force them to leave D-IAA, their budget problem might do it.

Fresno State’s WAC rivals are in crisis, too.

“All of our schools are at a juncture where they’re just trying to tread water,” conference commissioner Karl Benson says.

Utah State athletic director Scott Barnes, a former star Bulldogs basketball player, says the Aggies are looking at an operating deficit “far greater than Fresno State’s.” Utah State’s budget is barely half the size of Fresno State’s.

Utah State is implementing a campuswide furlough plan — one unpaid day per employee per month for five months — that includes athletics, Barnes says.

The Aggies’ future may pivot on whether students in a March referendum agree to impose a fee on themselves earmarked strictly for athletics.

“For us, it’s absolutely a tipping point,” Barnes says.

The WAC is trying to save money and the volleyball tournament might be the first to be cut back.

The WAC school presidents and athletic directors are trying to save money, Benson says.

One proposal is to limit next season’s conference volleyball tournament to six schools rather than all nine and hold it in Las Vegas (lower air travel and hotel costs) instead of Boise, the scheduled site.

What about booting Hawaii and/or Louisiana Tech out of the WAC? Conference bylaws won’t allow it, Benson says.

  177. Garret February 11, 2009 3:18 pm

The article also mentions how BSU wants to go to the MWC.

A more serious threat to WAC stability may reside in Boise, Idaho.

Boise State, with the conference’s signature football program, wants to jump to the Mountain West Conference. But the Mountain West is standing pat for now.

    Says Benson: “We survived that.”

  178. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 3:20 pm

i think fresno and utah state need a certain person with the initials H.F. to balance their budgets, or at least claim that he did it.

btw, how will UH ever fix what HF did? we’re not really “balanced” either if i recall right.

  179. Kazz February 11, 2009 3:27 pm

i thought i read that rule change re: celebration penalties differently. i think it’s more like if you celebrate before reaching the end zone (ie strutting from the 5 yd line), then it’s gonna negate the TD whereas if you celebrate after the TD (ie the stutz punt into the stands or the UGA team celebration against FLA 2 years ago) then the penalty will not negate the TD

  181. Kazz February 11, 2009 3:32 pm

    Chawan,

I no tink HF was “balanced” either…

  182. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 3:34 pm

    homey,
just saw your golf cart comment. that guy doesn’t even have a hard hat and he’s below the post. not like that would save anything except his hair. the guy in the cherry picker, wait thats not even a cherry picker, but a fork, has a hat and he’s above the post!
i kinda feel the same way walking around the shipyard under the huge cranes with my UH hardhat. like that’s gonna save me and my neck if something drops on me.

  183. Garret February 11, 2009 3:34 pm

    owen-16,

You are correct on the rule change interpretation. However, the rules committee seriously considered making the celebration penalties applied as “live-ball” penalties, which would take away TDs.

  184. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 3:36 pm

when i read the word peanut above, i could only think of HF for some reason. he poisoned us too.

  185. Garret February 11, 2009 3:36 pm

The Football Rules Committee wants coaches to debate turning some dead-ball celebration penalties into live-ball fouls, which could result in taking points off the scoreboard.

  186. owen-16 February 11, 2009 3:36 pm

benson better not be so big headed in his we survived that mantra. it’s only a matter of time before the MWC gets so dominant w/ their 3 headed monster of BYU, TCU and Utah that somehow their gonna force their way into the BCS w/ the BCS’s only stipulation being you get BSU and you’re in. once that happens, it’s gonna be scary to be in the WAC.

  187. chawan_cut February 11, 2009 3:46 pm

come to think of it, isn’t benson a boise alum? wonder if he’s torn with his alma mater trying to ditch him and the WAC.

  188. owen-16 February 11, 2009 3:48 pm

    garrett

that would be a much better rule change, as there aren’t as many opportunities to celebrate before reaching paydirt as there are after it

    Sawp,

Rocky look huge in the video of the Super Games…hope he stay injury free and destroy QB’s this year!

Speaking of the secondary, I too would like to know who has the edge to start as of right now. Obviously things will change before season opener but I like know who to keep a keen eye on. Lametrius Davis looks like someone who could step in right now. Bryant looked promising last year. I think Aaron Brown could be in the mix to start at one of the Safety spots. Wonder if Aulola Tonga, Kamalani Alo, or Mike Wadsworth could crack the rotation this year too. In due time them 3 are going to be mean. Tank need to put on weight or go on the Hawaiian Food diet…right now he no look like one Tank he look like one Moped.

  197. Pauoa Boy February 11, 2009 5:16 pm

Plus I’m thinking if LWJ cannot break into being a consistent running back for us, maybe Coach can use his speed at Safety? I know he left Nebraska because he didn’t want to play Safety but c’mon LWJ it’s your Senior year and reality is you haven’t done much except for that one Fresno State game. your #171: here we go again, the NCAA dumping on the little guys and the big guns ( USC, Texas, Florida, etc ) get off with very little or NO penalties – Reggie Bush for example.

yur #177: my impression from Benson’s statement is that if “by-laws” allowed dumping UH and LaTech – the WAC would vote to do it!!

if UH can get soooo goood that the PAC 10 would come calling as their fans would love to visit Hawaii – of course, we need help from the airlines and hotels to package a great itinerary they cannot refuse – all the while Coach Mack is builidng a great Warrior program.

I don’t know about anyone else but, playing SMU with JJ as coach is like going to a dance where the girl who dumped you shows up with her new boyfriend. He might be fat and ugly, but he could hurt you and there is nothing positive to be gained from a confrontation. Would you let your ex into your house with her new BF?
JJ might have gotten the raw end of HF, but he made the choice to leave after UH’s greatest year knowing that 2008 would be a rebuilding year. JJ could use the Hawaii game as a recruiting tool to take a few Hawaii players away.
Is he doing us a favor by playing a home and home? I don’t think so! JJ may have a warm spot for Hawaii in his heart, but he is still all business and would sure as heck try to steal Hawaii’s next star QB from under our noses.

Sorry JJ, keep your BF away and stick to recruiting in Texas and the bayou…

JJ is doing us a favor by wanting to set some games with the Warriors. While it would be nice to play more Pac-10 teams they are not knocking on our door. To believe BCS schools are looking to play us here is naive. JJ’s heart is still in Hawaii, his offer is proof of that.

I didn’t realize that Bess came this close to leading the Dolphins in receptions despite not starting until fairly late into the season…Pennington sure went to him a lot down the stretch!

Receiver Davone Bess, who played about half the snap Ginn did in 2008, was five catches shy of leading the team in receptions. During the final six games of 2008, which was the most critical stretch of the season, the undrafted rookie caught 32 passes as Camarillo’s replacement while Ginn caught just 18.

UH should take up all offers by teams who want to play here (SMU, Oregon State). In this economic climate, athletic departments are looking to cut costs. ST told us that the UH men’s volleyball team has to cut its prematch meals and shorten its trips, and the Fresno article Garret linked to talks about booting UH from the WAC to cut travel costs (prohibited by bylaws, but troubling that people are talking about it). Playing a football game in Hawaii is not cheap and is probably not the first choice of many football programs, BCS or non-BCS.

  242. Garret February 11, 2009 9:34 pm

    momotaro,

I know that some articles over the past year mentioned that the issue of UH subsidizing travel costs of the other WAC teams might be brought up again. Remember, UH used to have to pay that, but were able to get the subsidies removed when they got some leverage…now both UH and La Tech are considered budgetary burdens for travel.

  243. Garret February 11, 2009 9:42 pm

I think that filling the pukas in the schedule in the near future will be a problem for UH, which is the best part of the offer from JJ in my opinion. Remember, competent ADs work on their football schedules years in advance (some teams are filling their schedules all the way up to 2015 already!), and aren’t begging for teams right before the season begins like HF in 2007. Because HF was so far behind in the 2007 schedule, the 2010 and 2011 schedules were neglected.

My personal preference would be to do a home-and-home with Oregon State, which they have offered. Playing a good Pac-10 team has a much better upside to me than playing a C-USA or MWC team. I understand the recruiting implications, but so many other teams are recruiting in Hawaii anyway and Mac and the UH assistants are doing everything right to keep the local recruits home that want to remain home.

Many other schools would be great to schedule but they have already filled their schedules and wouldn’t be likely possibilities. Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, to me are all good choices for future games that have already shown they would do home-and-home deals with UH.

  246. jm2375 February 11, 2009 9:57 pm

Liz – the Brits have found that the researcher who originally published the study that linked vaccines and autism *changed* his data. No other studies have corrobated the “findings”.

  247. Jason February 11, 2009 10:15 pm

jm2375: Certainly worth studying, though. There’s a young boy at my church who is autistic. Not saying the vaccines are the reason why he’s like that, but I’m sure for many parents and family members out there, it’s a question that needs answering soon. I’m just wondering if there’s enough statistical data out there to conclusively show causality, and if there are any serious new unbiased studies being conducted into the effects of such preservatives and the vaccines in general. And by serious, I mean something that doesn’t look like it was put together by an amateur with a pre-determined conclusion.

  248. jm2375 February 11, 2009 10:40 pm

Jason: I believe part of the reason for the increase is either a change in diagnostic criteria or it’s become a “disease of the month”. Autism is also detected most easily at about the same age as the MMR vaccine is given. As a public health professional, I am a believer in the Star Trek adage “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”. That being said, I am not convinced that some of the newer vaccines are worth it. I have not yet had my 13 year old vaccinated with the Gardisil vaccine. It’s supposed to help prevent a cancer that won’t show up for many years that we don’t have any familial risk factors for. I’ll wait several years for more safety studies. I also would have rather she caught chickenpox as a young child, but no such luck, so she was vaccinated.

As for the research, check Medline: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

There are 4 Rhinos at the zoo.
Two by the Zebra’s and Giraffe’s.

Two more are the exhibit of the Lions or as some may see exhibit of grass and trees

  267. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 11:42 pm

Then again, I haven’t been to the zoo in 15 years. The last time I was there I saw a used syringe a couple of stalls from my car.

  269. BigWave96744 February 11, 2009 11:43 pm

Also right before you enter the Reptile exhibit, to your left you will see 2 huge tortoises. Those buggahs always mating.

In fact they are said to mate 3-4 times a week.
Not bad for those 70 year olds..

  270. Kekoa February 11, 2009 11:43 pm

Liz ~ Kimana was driving Diana back from the store, and they spotted it when it touched down about a mile away from them. He said that it sucked up mostly the red dirt in the area, and some outdoor patio equipment and chairs flew up in the air. Weird day!

I was talking to Curveball on my cell at the time, and he had my undivided attention.

ST, I hope you got the msg I left with Wena…

  271. homey β„ž February 11, 2009 11:45 pm

What did Tarzan say when he saw a herd of rhinos coming over the hill? “Look, herd of rhinos coming over hill”.

What did Tarzan say when he saw a herd of rhinos wearing sunglasses coming over the hill? Nothing, he did not recognize them.

What did Tarzan say when he saw a herd of elephants coming over the hill? “You rhinos no fool me again!”

  272. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER February 11, 2009 11:45 pm

ST- got hat right… I was looking for your tv show from yesterday to see if Richard Cooley was still around. I went to the Warrior Beat section from the link… no mo!
I found it eventually… and Richard is gone at last.

  273. BigWave96744 February 11, 2009 11:46 pm

    Stephen,
    Remember when our zoo had:
Camels, Gorillas, Kangaroos and Wallabies, a Black Pather, more than 2 sun bears, etc…

But then of course they were in cement cages and not roaming in the nature as they do now..

  274. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 11:46 pm

OK, I guess we’ll also use as prizes the 1980 baseball card with Rick Bass, Thad Reece, Mark Olmos and “Collin” Tanabe. Isn’t it supposed to be “Colin” Tanabe?

Hey, Wena, just found my Muhammad Ali autograph, from 1970.
We were in Miami when the hotel doorman told me to approach him. I said: “Hi, Mr. Clay …”
And he gave me that stare.

  284. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2009 11:59 pm

The best autograph I have is when Pete Rose signed my parlay sheet at the MGM in Las Vegas.

    Good point, Liz.
Then there was the time Woody Harrelson turned down my autograph request. He was carrying a kid at the airport. The guy next to him offered to carry the kid while he signed, but he still refused. Later, I realized the other guy was Wesley Snipes.

i have seen the white pueo on three occasions. once sitting on median rail on the h-3 saddle near the kawainui marsh. a second time on the same stretch of road, but, this time it was road kill. the third time while traversing through the old kawainui marsh road.

i guess the kawainui marsh does serve its purpose as a bird sanctuary.

and i guess st has never smelled the elephant cage?

  307. roysan16 February 12, 2009 5:36 am

    kawainui marsh

    have seen the white pueo

what’s intriguing to the little ones is watching uncle throw some bread in the water and as the small talapia go after the bread….at the same time the white pueo dives into the water and goes after the talapia, usually gulping down many at a time.

where did all the ducks go?

along the trail note the moss rock wall, the workmanship on that wall is outstanding, probably comes at a high cost since it’s at least 5 feet high and stretches a mile (at least?).

haven’t seen pigs at the marsh as al mentioned

but have seen many pigs up in …Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden (google)

no admission charge, and the top part of the trail gives a tutorial (signs etc) identifying the plants and trees found in Hawaii)….very worth while walk around the Lake…saw 3 big white ducks in the marsh area, and many in the water ( saw signs identifying the types etc) check in with the office, something I regretfully ignored as it was confusing to which trail to go on…seemed to be three trails ( not marked well, and confusing to follow with some going to dead ends.)

to do lists (someday…Diamond Head, and the state park up in Tantalaus)

    about football

read the upcoming rule change here about something to do with how if the punter goes out of the tackle box it wouldn’t be a roughing the kicker penalty on the defense is a good rule to enact

in the wac or some time team UH played last year ( was it Boise?) had a right footed rugby style type punter that would sprint to the right about 15 yards with the punt defenders hesitant to run into the punter–now the defenders can, which I think is good for the punt defenders.

about Oregon state football-I thought i read somewhere where the football coach would love to play UH in the future, but the OSU administration nixed the idea

about future opponents, outside of the wac, UH has to find a rival, a rivalry game that creates a lot of hype…and a lot of viewership from PPV
PPV and TV should help UH underwrite the costs of bringing in a big name teams

or UH should have a bigger percentage of PPV

SMU? Sure, why not.. Fostering relationships with one Texas team is a start to perhaps other Texas teams looking to schedule here.. Big market area, Texas…and the smu-UH could potentially develop into a rivalry game, which is the niche UH should be looking for—also there could possibily be lot of viewership from dallas

  308. Kekoa February 12, 2009 6:04 am

    Roysan16 ~

“The eyes of Texas are upon you!”…That sounds good, but I’m wondering how the Texas folks would feel about the travel expense.

Once the shine wore off the lily, it would be hard to pitch it to the fans to shell out for transportation and lodging to Hawaii.

What about the Military teams? We got Navy coming here in November of this year. What about the Air Force, since it’s out West?

  309. whitey February 12, 2009 6:34 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos.

  310. roysan16 February 12, 2009 6:37 am

    kekoa

you hit it on the nose with scheduling the military teams in the future

with a uncertain job market we’re already seeing record enlistments in all the branches of the services-marines, army, navy etc.

and I imagine the academies, likewise, are seeing better talented football applicants wanting to go to the academises because of an uncertain job market

the future talent on the academy teams-airforce, navy and army- should see it’s teams attracting and become appealing to the talented football recruits

how i see it in the future the academy teams should be fortified with a lot more talented players

and scheduling these teams to play UH wouldn’t anyway be gimme games because the academy teams should tougher to play in the future

rivalry games with the academy teams? sure, sounds like a good idea.

which in the future the academy teams

  311. whitey February 12, 2009 6:39 am

roysan, the white bird at the swamp you are describing is probably not a pueo, but an owkoo (spp), night heron or cattle egret. the white pueo is probably a barn owl, which is the logo for white owl cigars. the pueo is a small owl and very shy.

  312. whitey February 12, 2009 6:42 am

i may be wrong, but didn’t 2 of our more famous nfl players come from the air force to uh, larry cole and golden richards?????

  313. roysan16 February 12, 2009 6:49 am

    whitey

i’m glad you taught me something, i got the those two mixed up

    absolutely your right

now i remember for sure (?. maybe)? i’ve seen the pueo near the wailae country club near the beach park–beautifulest bird to marvel at

  314. whitey February 12, 2009 6:49 am

i believe for uh to get “major” schools to schedule us is going to take some time, but he also needs to look at how you approach other ads’. personally, i would start with “omiyage” to introduce myself to them. When going on trips, always take “omiyage”. When they visit here and before they go home, give them an “omiyage”. You will be surprised at how the old axiom works wonders “treat people the way you want to be treated”.

  315. whitey February 12, 2009 6:51 am

another suggestion is for jd to sit with hugh yoshida to find out how he got teams to come here or on their schedule. hugh knows how the “omiyage” works.

  316. whitey February 12, 2009 6:56 am

if you look back at the past prior to hf, scheduling was not a problem. the major problems for uh scheduling is a result of hf being a total arsehole.

  317. whitey February 12, 2009 6:59 am

why not do what hugh did, bring in a bunch of ads’ for a weekend of golf and getting to know each other. ask the airlines and hotels for help cause they will benefit when the other schools come here.

  318. whitey February 12, 2009 7:01 am

ok, time to get ready for “big time” marketing today. Have a great day!!!

  319. roysan16 February 12, 2009 7:12 am

    whitey

i think also if the elected hawaii officials elected to congress smmoze with other states congress people and ask other states congress people to get word back to the college prez to keep UH in mind in future scheduling would help, imo. it can’t hurt.

    it all about smmoozing

if the prez obama just intimated the idea to a colleague “keep hawaii in mind in future schedule” could work wonders.

  320. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER February 12, 2009 7:39 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

We have pueo and barn owls here. The pueo are cuuuute!

  321. Garret February 12, 2009 7:40 am

The biggest power that UH can get on its side for scheduling is ESPN. UH fills a time slot for ESPN that no other team can fill, and UH can bring ratings to that time slot with the right opponent. ESPN is already setting up a lot of special telecasts of football games for other schools, but nothing so far for UH for the upcoming season.

Even more than smoozing college Presidents or ADs, the lure of a national TV broadcast on ESPN will get teams lining up to play UH.

  322. jm2375 February 12, 2009 7:44 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

roysan – #309 – the rock wall at Kawainui Marsh is actually a levee.

I remember seeing a brown owl (Hawaiian owl?) fly across Honolulu (at least from my vantage point up on Round Top) every evening during the summer waaaay back when I was a kid.

As for the WAC kicking UH and LaTech out – isn’t UH the senior member? When did FSU and SJSU join the conference?

  323. TOM February 12, 2009 7:53 am

GARRET: Your point in scheduling and recruiting is well-taken. In the case of JJ, it would seem that his offers for the next several years has been in Texas and is a bigger area too begin with in recruiting than in Hawaii and Samoa. It may be that we are too concern with him “poaching” in our part of the world.

I would be more concerned with the western US (ie Washington, Oregon, Utah, Colorado) where the population is comparatively small and they have to go far afield in recruiting. Of course if there is a superstar(s) in our area, the coaches may wander over here to see if they are interested.

Maybe Doris has some thoughts on that – but this is my 2 cents and in these days, 2 cents doesn’t go too far.

  324. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER February 12, 2009 8:15 am

Mahalo Garret and TOM- Also, Texas is a GREAT place for UH to recruit players. Door swings both ways.
I still believe that Coach Jones loves Hawaii (his Foundation is one reason to believe) and is really trying to do his part to help UH.
