Hawaii stays at No. 6, receives 3 first-place votes

Despite receiving first-place votes for the first time this season, Hawaii remained at No. 6 in today’s AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 volleyball poll.

The Rainbow Wahine (13-1) were among the seven teams to split the 60 votes from the coaches, with new No. 1 Washington (10-0) receiving 38 when moving up a spot.

No. 2 USC (12-1, 12 votes) jumped over Florida (13-1, 2 votes) from fourth to second with the Gators remaining at No. 3.

Texas (8-2, 2 votes) moved up a spot to No. 4 followed by previous No. 1 Penn State (10-2, 1 vote) which was upset at home Friday by former No. 15 Michigan State (13-1, 2 votes). The Spartans moved into the Top 10 for the first time this season to No. 9.

Stanford (9-3) remained at No. 7 with Minnesota (14-1) moving up a spot to No. 8. Rounding at the Top 10 was Nebraska (9-2), which moved up two spots.

The biggest drop within last week’s Top 10 was San Diego (9-3), the only team to beat Hawaii this season. The Toreros fell from No. 8 to 13 after being upset at home by unranked Saint Mary’s in five sets.

Hawaii takes an 11-match win streak on the road this week with Big West matches Friday at Long Beach State (8-7, 1-1 BWC) and Saturday at UC Irvine (0-7, 0-2 BWC). The Rainbow Wahine (2-0 BWC) began defense of their conference crown with sweeps over Cal State Fullerton (7-6, 0-1 BWC) and UC Riverside (1-2, 0-1 BWC) last week.

Those voting Hawai’i #1: Jerritt Elliott of Texas, Christy Johnson-Lynch of Iowa State and Jennifer Petrie of San Diego. John Cook voted Hawai’i 10th, the worst of all reported votes.

  2. Andrew September 30, 2013 9:44 am

    1. Maverick,

Where did Cook vote his team>?

  3. Maverick September 30, 2013 9:59 am

    2. 11th

  4. Cubicle1126 September 30, 2013 10:10 am

it’s not surprising that the votes are all over the place … the overall results so far are all over the place too.

nice to see hawaii holding steady in the various RPI estimators this week, even after playing ucr (and their 1-12 record).

  5. LC September 30, 2013 10:16 am

Hawai`i fell in the different RPI replicators/mimickers. Pablo from 2nd to 4th, Unofficial RPI web site from # 2 to #3 and 3rd to 4th in the Massey rankings. don’t have access to the RKPI.

  6. vbfan September 30, 2013 10:24 am

Hawaii only fell in the home away modified RPI which the NCAA does not use for volleyball. I believe they are still 2 in the unadjusted RPI. I don’t care about Pablo or Massey since they aren’t used to seed teams.

  7. frings September 30, 2013 10:31 am

Can I ask where tehewebsite is that shows how the coaches voted. I found the poll, but have not seen where it lists how individuals voted. Thanks much!

  8. frings September 30, 2013 10:33 am

CS Northridge received votes. They have something?

  9. LC September 30, 2013 10:44 am

By the time we get to Dec 1 start packing the bags.

  10. po'okela September 30, 2013 10:50 am

which matches are being televised on espnu this season?

  11. Cubicle1126 September 30, 2013 11:17 am

for LC and everybody — hawaii stayed at #2 at in the RKPI

i don’t think hawaii is unseeded this year. i think their rpi will hold steady. they may experience a drop, but not so drastic that they end up unseeded. even if they’re on the “bubble” for seeding, i think the nitty gritty of their schedule (3-1 against top 25 rpi teams so far, and 6-1 against top 50 rpi teams) will be enough to earn hawaii a seed.

but still plenty of season left.

  12. Grammy September 30, 2013 11:44 am

Big West play obviously doesn’t impress voters one bit, so I guess only a loss to a BW rival will cost Wahine votes. Only thing Wahine can do is win or else! But I have faith they can and will go undefeated in BW again. Go Wahine!

  13. tako September 30, 2013 11:48 am

At the end of the day, the Wahine need to win out. They have control of that part of the equation, everything else is just a wish list. The team is winning, relevant comments came from the Fresno St Football Coach, we may have won ugly but we won and we’ll take it. Same is true for the Wahine VB team. Personally, seeing our Wahine win is my concern and witnessing them improve each game keeps my eyes glued to history in the making. Watch Emily Hartong’s eyes they reflect hunger and confidence, no matter what position on the court she’s playing, she’s focused, same is true for Ali. All we gotta do is support the team by serving as the 7th player….someone said, you get what you believe as what you believe is what you’ll make happen. Serve as the 7th player….

  14. Andrew September 30, 2013 12:04 pm

I see Florida being the new #1 in a few weeks. I think Washington and USC will at least drop another match in league play. The SEC isn’t that strong of a conference so looks like Florida can win through.

  15. Cindy Luis September 30, 2013 1:15 pm

    10. or you can look at it that this is not the weekly Wahine award. Uiato played well. so did Taylor (not nominated). even Longo (not nominated)

  16. Maverick September 30, 2013 1:53 pm

    13. I think this comment goes on the previous thread.

  17. vbfan September 30, 2013 2:24 pm

I don’t like the way Hawaii is the odd team out in Big West scheduling this year. Since Hawaii has no travel partner that means that when other teams play Hawaii it is their only match of the week.

LBSU and UCI only play Hawaii this week. Granted I think the talent disparity is great enough that they should win anyway, but the Big West did no favors to Hawaii in regards to the schedule. Hopefully another team will be the odd team out next year and not Hawaii again.

  18. Cindy Luis September 30, 2013 2:27 pm

Mentioned that particular item months ago when the Big West schedule first came out.
Shoji said he had no problem with it and he was the one who agreed to being the ‘lone wolf’ He liked it for scheduling purposes, able to get Friday-Saturday matches at home rather than a Thursday-Saturday split

  19. OrbitalRipZ September 30, 2013 2:28 pm

Re: Main post … “Huskies moved up one spot, leap-frogging USC and Florida”: As far as I know, leap-frogging means to vault oneself over the backs of others, and since neither USC nor Florida was ahead of UDub to bend down, leap-frogging is not the right word.

Anne Miller reported that the 1ST NCAA RPI of the season will be released either October 7 or October 8 (having a senior moment here, can’t remember which day she said). In any event, next week’s release will put a lot of questions to rest and (as usual) raise a lot of new questions. And send the AVCA Coaches Poll into the “Who Cares!” category, contrary to the “politically correct” NCAA Volleyball Committee spokesperson’s comment that all rankings/polls are given equal weight. Yeah, right.

Re: 10 I used to say this all the time about the MWC and now I will say the same for the BWC: they need to have 2 awards — OFFENSIVE POW and DEFENSIVE POW — so the likes of a Longo will receive more recognition DURING the season.

  20. Cindy Luis September 30, 2013 2:31 pm

    17. you are right. about leapfrogging. will change it. appreciate you pointing that out.

  21. vbfan September 30, 2013 2:56 pm

#10 I don’t think any matches are on ESPNU this season.

The match at Long Beach will be on Fox Sports West. All other matches are either on OC16, or internet streaming on Big West TV.

  22. LC September 30, 2013 3:34 pm

The Beach had another player out last week due to injury Opp Bre Mackie. Not sure if she is good to go for this match.

  23. abacaxi September 30, 2013 4:53 pm

    7. Go to the website with the polls. The VOTER BALLOTS are shown in the same column.

  24. Don September 30, 2013 8:38 pm

John Cook would vote us 10th..he’s still too chicken to play Hawaii during the regular season…

  25. Warriorfan September 30, 2013 8:50 pm

^Cook doesn’t mind playing UH in Lincoln.

  26. heluhelu October 1, 2013 10:10 am

FYI. Beach-Wahine will be televised Friday (10/4) at 5pm (HST) on FSW (Oceanic 226/1226)

  27. Robin October 1, 2013 10:30 am

    HOPEFULLY perfect timing:
Hawaiian Airlines is increasing capacity and amenities for its Honolulu-Seattle service beginning Dec. 8 by switching to a larger aircraft. The airline will begin using a 294-seat Airbus A330, which offers on-demand seat-back entertainment, more legroom and 60 more seats than are available in the 264-seat Boeing 767-300ER.

Times for daily service between Honolulu and Seattle and Maui and Seattle will be adjusted Dec. 8 so flights from Honolulu are scheduled to depart at 2:05 p.m., while Kahului flights are due to take off at 3:55 p.m.

  28. kaleiboy October 2, 2013 12:01 am

    Agree with Robin (#27)

  29. grace October 2, 2013 2:49 pm

Watching Missouri (16-0) vs Arkansas (9-4). Carly Kan and Loxley Keala looking good as freshmen for Missouri. Also, Arkansas Meredith Hays (former All WAC New Mexico St player) still looking great with her hitting. Hawaii would beat Missouri. Too much firepower and DEFENSE!

  30. Volleyball fan October 2, 2013 10:29 pm

Robin, Hawaii will have to make the Final Four to be able to fly to Seattle. For that to happen, this team will have to beat the likes of Washington or Stanford away from home. Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch.

  31. LC October 3, 2013 6:25 am

UCLA lost to Stanford,no help for our RPI.

  32. Cindy Luis October 3, 2013 7:18 am

    30. true but it also means it will be a neutral site if they were to play UW or Stanford. The predetermined regional sites are USC, Nebraska, Kentucky and Illinois.
That is, unless the selection committee seeds UW (to protect them as NCAA host) and then sends unseeded UH up there for first-second round again

  33. Robin October 3, 2013 7:57 am

Volleyball Fan, the reason for the HOPEFULLY in CAPS…and I was implying airline capacity for fans, not the team…

  34. surfboy October 4, 2013 3:32 am

Someone on volleytalk noted the absence of Kalei Adolpho from the UH rosters on the athletic site….hoping this is an error as theydont have her listed Iin the archives as well….

  35. Hot October 4, 2013 3:55 am

    She’s gone…

  36. LC October 4, 2013 5:23 am

The same thing happened just recently with basketball. She was removed from their roster including the archives. I’m guessing just another screw up.
If there was anything going on we would have already known about it or there would have been signs.

  37. LC October 4, 2013 8:45 am

Problem fixed just took another look at roster and she is there.

  38. JT October 4, 2013 12:10 pm

any surprises on the travel roster? any additions?

  39. Beauston October 4, 2013 12:16 pm

Anyone here know how else I can watch the match tonight against LBSU?
Im in DC and my cable provider does not offer FSW.
I have Fox sports 1 and 2 but it looks like they are only streaming at FSW.

  40. surfboy October 4, 2013 12:18 pm

    38. I hope Dave Shoji brings Kayla Kawamura on the travel roster, think she deserves it

  41. surfboy October 4, 2013 12:19 pm

    39. I live in Vegas and we have three different channels that will be televising the game…FSW, FSD and forgot the other one. Try checking if you have Fox Sports Digital.

  42. mauna October 4, 2013 12:34 pm

    40. I agree with you surfboy. Shoji didn’t bring Kayla on the first trip because she had too many service errors at 13 but since then hasn’t had another. I recall only one serve that went into the net, if anything she gets it over the net, even if long the opponent might get a touch on it.

  43. LC October 4, 2013 1:09 pm

Miller said in her article today that this a nationally televised match but that isn’t true it’s a regional match on Fox Sports West which covers all of Nevada and California with the exception of the San Diego area which has Fox Sports San Diego.

Here is a map of the regional Fox networks.
    http://msn.foxsports.com/home/page/fsn

  44. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 1:36 pm

    34. et al
the question came up about Adolpho last week. UH hadn’t updated the roster
I never understood the question about the archives since the few items I looked at had her in there.
She is on the team. She is on the roster.

  45. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 1:42 pm

    42. Shoji didn’t take another player be it Kawamura or Lelepali because he said he didn’t think he needed another DS. Which, in my mind, translated to he thought Long was the only one he needed to bring and that was because of her versatility as potentially playing OH.
As I said two weeks ago after talking to him about that, and mentioning Long by name, he did not single out any player by name but said he would re-evaluate the situation for the next trip. There was never any mention as to Kawamura having too many SEs as a reason she wasn’t on the trip to Wichita.
That said, I don’t know who made the travel roster.

  46. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 2:01 pm

    44. The Beach’s release also called it a nationally televised event.
    Under The Bright Lights
Long Beach State will play on national television for the first time in the 2013 season this weekend, as the Walter Pyramid will play host to a television crew from Fox Sports West. The 49ers-Hawai’i tilt in Long Beach last season was also televised, as the rivalry continues between the two teams on a national stage.

  47. LC October 4, 2013 2:04 pm

Well that makes both of them wrong.

  48. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 2:06 pm

That it does. think Regional is the better term. although for UH being on ‘local TV’ is regional. This is the first time they will be on a national network, albeit it in a regional market.

  49. Beauston October 4, 2013 2:13 pm

It cant be called nationally televised if your on DC and cant watch it.

  50. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 2:35 pm

47-49. I also think it depends on who your cable provider is and what stations you are paying for. In Hawaii I get FSW and a couple other FS stations for free, such as FW2. I could buy FS Atlantic and FS Central but I haven’t. So it seems that it is available nationally but you have to buy FSW if you don’t receive it as part of the package you already have.

  51. LC October 4, 2013 3:11 pm

It’s not on FS1 already ready looked and FS 2 it just the old Fuel Channel.

It’s really simple if you don’t live in the Fox Sports West region and want to find out just go to the Fox Sports click TV Listings fill in zip code select your provider and like magic you get to see the TV listing for your area.

  52. surfboy October 4, 2013 4:55 pm

    44. The adminstrators fixed the error for Kalei Adolpho this morning as when the same thing happend a short time ago for her on the basketball roster.

  53. Beauston October 4, 2013 5:13 pm

Thanks LC, already tried that. Dish and Direct TV are the only ones that provide FSW in DC Metro Area.
I guess i just have to wait until it post on Youtube.
    Hope the Bows win!
