    Couple of things about Colt:
    • He said his knee is fine. He showed me the wounds.
    • He’s not changing his throwing motion. When I asked, he did the eye-roll and said: “C’mon now.”

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2009 8:52 am

Congrats to Steele Jantz and his crew. I wonder if Steele’s arm had anything to do with it. I can imagine there might be potential for serious injury when these guys play dodge ball. 😆

on a notre dame message board

I found this posts to be funny

Notre Dame will return to glory in 2011, in Urban Meyer’s 2nd year.

over the last 12 years ND has compiled a record 85-62

ND flops next year-Weis will be out

although as other national columnists have ND as a top ten team next year IDK…maybe

but with MT now going to ND I’ll definitely watch a few games

how much of a influence in his decision i wonder of ND playing in the Hawaii Bowl and MT having been seen at the ND practices. I wonder if a positive bond was established then.

#2 saw rgm and bess at a local pub recently. he said that rgm was telling him that he had a tryout going on this year. sorry to say that #2 couldn’t remember which team because he couldn’t make out what he was saying at that point.

rgm’s biggest fan seems to be bess. bess kept telling them that if it weren’t for his hammy he would have hooked up with a team.

    ST, good neighbor:

Are the “rules” to using Cooke Field now been established? Who can use and when? hours of operation?

Any possibility of “adding” recruiting to tony Tuioti’s job description or is it a NO NO by the NCAA? If so, why should they dictate to a school what a position description shall or shall not include?

Hawai athletes going away: their “intent” may be to represent Hawaii, but the reality is they will forever be referred to what school they attended and not Hawaii if they move to the next level — the only way to truly represent Hawaii is to play for Hawaii and all who make reference to the player will say, “Hawaii” or “University of Hawaii”. That being said, we wish them all the very best in whatever they pursue in the future.

  64. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2009 10:22 am

    The dodgeball champs are Tundakatz.
    Captain: Defensive tackle Tuika Tufaga.
Members: Safety Mana Silva, offensive tackle Ray Hisatake, quarterback Steele Jantz, guard Raphael Ieru, wideout Royce Pollard, defensive end Elliott Purcell, linebacker Art Laurel, wideout Troy Lauduski, offensive lineman Daniel Otineru, and Hogan Rosehill.

  65. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2009 10:24 am

I think this year’s class of Mainland-bound players is different.
At least nobody can say they were snubbed.

    national recruiter of the year?

i’ve read where the ucla OL coach was here four times last month in the re pursuit of kapoleis stan h. and the utah prep lineman Xavier Su’a Filo was a huge pick up for Ucla.++ 3 other 3 star OL

so definitely UCLA did unexpectedly well

including 3 4 star DBs ( this is huge in stopping USC-when OSU beat USC this year it was partly because of the play of the OSU secondary stopping the passing game.)

credit to who on the UCLA staff? the OL coach, the HC, or Norm C?

  71. Garret February 5, 2009 10:44 am

Any possibility of “adding” recruiting to tony Tuioti’s job description or is it a NO NO by the NCAA? If so, why should they dictate to a school what a position description shall or shall not include?

    A-House,

This is an NCAA regulation. Only coaches can recruit off-campus and each team has a limited number of coaches. If UH wants to have Tony Tuioti recruit on campus, they can give him one of the open coaching positions.

Your argument here against the rule is actually *bad* for UH. If you think about it, richer schools would hire dozens of coaches for recruiting purposes only (for example, hiring coaches from schools were top recruits played) if they could and UH could not afford to match that. This way the number of recruiters is even no matter what the school’s recruiting budget.

  75. Garret February 5, 2009 10:54 am

    lava,

I think you misunderstood my point. I think that Mac and the UH coaches did things the *right* way! My post was not a criticism of their actions…I just wanted to post about how fans shouldn’t claim purity in the recruiting actions of schools. UH did seem to bring in several recruits that were committed to other schools (McKay right after he committed to UCLA, Jray, etc.), something that others claim is bad only when other schools do it to UH commits.

One scenario: Would it be wrong for Mac to call a 2010 local recruit in September who committed to another school over the summer to see if he would be interested in UH recruiting him? UH would back off if the recruit wasn’t interested but UH would recruit the player if given the invitation. I say that is *not* a wrong thing to do. However, others have given blanket statements that UH shouldn’t initiate the recruiting of a committed recruit.

That is the last I’ll say on the subject because I don’t want my comments to be seen as negative towards UH or other posters.

  76. al ™ February 5, 2009 10:55 am

rgm will make somebody’s team this year. davone’s success will open doors for him.

i just hope j. rivers can get a shot, provided that he takes training a bit more seriously.

it would be good to have four wr’s from one year in the big show. (not forgetting about cj at buffalo (was it?).

  77. Garret February 5, 2009 10:56 am

This recruit apparently picked his school by a coin flip. I couldn’t imagine being a coach at West Virginia after they worked so hard in recruiting the player but lost via a coin flip…

Just before making his final decision, the Winslow Township High School senior football player flipped a quarter given to him by principal Glen Jackson.

    Heads – West Virginia.

    Tails – Rutgers.

An All-South Jersey linebacker this past season and a three-year captain for the Eagles, Glaud will attend Rutgers. He put on a Scarlet Knights hat right after the coin landed on tails.

“I told my brother (Shariff) that it was between Rutgers and West Virginia. Mr. Jackson asked me if I wanted to flip a quarter. I guess he thought I was joking, but I was serious. It landed on tails, so we’re a Scarlet Knight now. I was really undecided.”

  78. al ™ February 5, 2009 10:57 am

one of the cute comments by mack yesterday was that he wanted tony t. to stay put as the player developement director because he was doing such a great job in spite of tony’s eventual desire to coach again.

Good fun to see the pics of the guys. I picked up a 100th anniversary t-shirt at Murphy’s last night. Hung w/ JaM, sj-macro & Myki.

I decided to pass by Murphys after getting out of work to check out what kind of crowd they had and it looked like the festivites were dying down. So I just parked my car to check out the merch tent and ran into Jack Flash and his boys.

Also saw Coach Mack, JD, McNamara and Clapp mingling with the fans that were left.

But yeah I managed to pick up some 100-year anniversary merch considering they were at a lower price.

  80. Garret February 5, 2009 11:00 am

    Al,

RGM put up great stats in the CFL, including in the playoffs, which is great for his prospects. His health is the key because the NFL won’t wait for undrafted free agents to heal.

I wish Jason Rivers luck, but he might have to play one season with the Shock and get his body ready (back problems if I remember right) for his next shot.

CJ was with Buffalo last season and I’m sure he’ll be in the NFL again.

It is too bad that Miami doesn’t need anymore slot receivers…Bess would be able to recommend RGM. I still cannot believe that Miami had just *3* receivers in their playoff game…I think they had the same number of TEs that day!

stan mckay already had a visit scheduled and he came before his decsion was finalized. i think he was sincere in visiting hawaii as a viable option. same with tepa.

there were some who came and got the thumbs down by the boys. it is why they were not offered or wanted.

if they were offered then mack did commit to them. in one or two cases, it turned out that the one that got away was all for the good.

  85. al ™ February 5, 2009 11:13 am

uh808…..did you forget to add “fan” to your name? is it her son?

  86. Garret February 5, 2009 11:13 am

    Al,

I had heard that Tony Tuioti still wanted to coach when he took the UH position. If he’s going to leave his position for coaching, I hope that he becomes a coach at UH instead of some other school! I would hate for a Pac-10 school or some other school to hire him as a coach and put him in charge of recruiting Hawaii players…

UH has 2 openings now, I wonder if things could be moved around to get him one of those spots. If he’ll wait a few years, there are often openings created in coaching staffs and UH could move him over then.

  89. Garret February 5, 2009 11:15 am

    Al,

I know that McKay’s visit was scheduled before he committed to UCLA, but UH could have canceled the visit if it wished to draw a line in the sand on the issue. Bringing him in was the right thing to do…but I bet the reaction would have been different here if a recruit had a scheduled trip to another school that he took after committing to UH!

One important thing to note about preseason is that if CJ impresses then and Buffalo tries to put him on the practice squad again, any NFL team can grab CJ if they put him on their active roster.

You know Asians are when it comes to free stuff.

Speaking about recruiting the process itself has gotten out of control. With all of the YouTube videos, blogs and reviews these kids are scrutinized more than ever before; especially when it comes to those high prized players. If they don’t produce within a couple of years those same supporters become ruthless critics. Ask any Penn State fan about QB Anthony Morelli and they’ll rip this kid like he’s a convicted felon.

Although college football is big business we still must remember these young men are still teenagers. Props to Coach Mack for emphasizing the “student” in student/athlete.

i would think that doris serves all of hawaii better in what she is doing right now. being hired by the university will limit her in the number of lives she can touch. after all, she would have to serve the hand that feeds her.

however, for all she does, realize that she doesn’t have a paycheck from it.

oh yes donations are accepted at http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com/

  107. roysan16 February 5, 2009 11:45 am

yesterday morning i’m listening to bobby c. show. And he’s talking to a USC journalist/insider. And basically for about 5 minutes all we hear is the usc insider basically counting his chickens before they hatched. And it was big time boasting and raving about securing manti to USC. He even goes on to talk about how ken norten, the usc lb coach, would do this and this and blah, blah with manti T. Even was mentioning about how important it was that manti T visited the last weekend . And then Bobby dropped the bomb on him.

“Sorry to interrupt you all… but we have this breaking news of where manti’s going to play his college ball”.Bobby clears his throat and their was an enunciation of how he relayed the info the the listeners , maybe, or it seemed that way to the ones listening. And says,” Manti T is going to Notre Dame”.

For a second everything must have seemed so surreal to the USC insider. There was an awkward silence, which was understandable.

Later in the show, Bobby C alluded to that moment, saying (I hope I’m not misinterpreting what he said) it felt strange (or did he say it was good?) in being the bearer of bad news.

I will keep everyone updated on how Jason Rivers and Hercules Satele does with the Spokane Shock this season, since I have season tix. They have a pre-season game on March 18th which is in the middle of their training camp, so I guess that will be the first report I will give.

  118. OldDiver February 5, 2009 12:07 pm

Concerning recruiting a player after they have given a verbal. This is not a black and white situation. Letting a player know you are interested in them after they verbal another school gives them a choice, which is a good thing. Putting bear hug type pressure on them is another.

  119. Beowulf213 February 5, 2009 12:09 pm

Jake’s in Arizona training for the April 2nd proday. He’s training at the same facility as Josh Leonard, Francis Maka and another Hawaii alumni named Vaka. It’s the same place CJ trained last year. This year he will be at his best and ought to test very well. He’s doing his part, the rest is up to you know who. 🙂

  120. roysan16 February 5, 2009 12:09 pm

of the incoming recruits- and not to slight anyone other recruit

just the players I like by watching their film

and judging their potential as how they look on film

I really like schutter– QB, Benson M– OG.

and quite frankly I thought any of the two could have been stolen by the PAC-10 or WAC, especially benson (who was offered by calif. and wash.). Or any of the 3 QB recruits being persuaded to the service academies/or the WAC. So I was very happy to see them signing with Hawaii. For weeks, maybe months, I purposely didn’t write something like,” I hope no other teams are going after benson M or schutter”, as not wanting to tip off the other recruiters.

Come three-four years from now I’d be very surprised if these two are not household names. JMO.

  122. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2009 12:12 pm

    On RGM:
It appears he might be returning to Canada unless he gets an NFL offer.
He got hurt with the Texans, and he didn’t get into any games with Chicago. He wanted to get in, just so there would be some film.
He then went to Canada, and tore it up on the practice squad.
They promoted him for the final three regular season games, and he ended up displacing a starter in the lineup. He had a 100-yard game in the regular season and in the playoffs.
    He looks fit.

  124. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2009 12:15 pm

Jake didn’t play in the 2008 football season, but he was there finishing up school and helping out the team as a student manager. I saw where Gerad and Myron were on the new Texas football league for x college players. United gridiron football league I think it is called. Jacob applied for that but didn’t get picked. We believe there are other plans for him in the works.

  149. Bulla February 5, 2009 12:59 pm

it is apparent that there is more exposure of local athletes and their abilities on the field. if they are able to maintain a decent gpa and be of good character, the sky is the limit.

coach mcbride is investing in the future of their school, using the talent we have here in hawaii, same as he did at Utah. not everyone can play for UH, plain fact, simple math. we wish all the best for the Warriors in their coming season, and years to follow.

if a student athlete has an opportunity to get an education that is paid for by the institution who wants him for his/her athletic ability….Praise God!!!

we have far too many kids in hawaii who are not given the chance, for one reason or another, and who is the ultimate loser besides that student? Us, Hawaii, our society, our community as a whole lose out on what ‘might’ve been’.

to all the student athletes blessed with the chance to further their education, God Bless and God Speed. if you have to leave Hawaii, represent and remember your roots….always.

I thought I’d share this with everyone.

Yesterday I posted a copy of a letter I sent to Coach Mack in addition to thanking him and his staff on the effort they displayed in recruiting this past year.

There is no way I would have been able to thank all those kids in person for signing on to play for Hawaii so I had humbly asked him to “pass” the message along to his new players.

    Letter:

    Kazz:

    February 4th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Dear Kamalani Alo, T.J. Alofipo, Kalanai Brackenridge, Rodney Bradley, Aaron Brown, George Daily-Lyles, Lametrius Davis, Chizzy Dimude, David Graves, Alex Green, David Hafoka, Tank Hopkins, Joey Iosefa, Brett Leonard, Chad Lopati, John Lister, Jordan Loeffler, Benson Ma‘afala, Marcus Malepeai, Veni Manu, Zach Masch, Corey Nielsen, Deondre Powell, Cayman Shutter, Destin Stewart, Billy Ray Stutzmann, Aulola Tonga, Michael Wadsworth, and Chauncy Winchester-Makainai,

On behalf of Warrior fans and boosters I would like to thank all of you for believing in the cause.

At one point or another some, if not all, of you have “second-guessed” your decisions prior to sending Coach McMackin your letters of intent and we do not blame you. For the mainland kids, we UNDERSTAND that Hawaii is far from home and far away from your “comfort zone”, but you have shown the Warrior fans that you are fearless and are young men of your word.

For our local boys staying home, words cannot express the respect you have earned from Warrior Football fans across the state. The University of Hawaii may not have the amenities other programs have as a result of wealthy donors, but what UH can offer is a taste of the local life you were raised in. The values of “ohana” will never leave you as you have decided to stay home and DEFEND IT!!! In this, you will have a place in UH football history as kama’aina.

I, and the thousands of fans, can only promise you all that we will be there for every home game, cheering for all road challenges, and supporting you all spiritually and financially as you embark on a new chapter of your young lives. In the end, there is no way to know who will remain Warriors and who will make LARGE impacts on the program itself, but please understand that each time a young man or woman commit to the University of Hawaii, you are committing to a community of people that remain unique from the rest of the country in the fact that you bear the name of a people, of a belief, and a family on your chest.

Hawaii athletics has it’s OWN traditions. Some of them may not be steeped in National Championship lore, but ALL of our traditions carry the spirit of a nation that is unified by the belief that anything is possible if we are able to unite as ONE.

“Pupukahi I holomua” has been translated as “united to move forward”. I have heard this phrase before and I have seen the intention for this phrase to be carried out for those that embrace it. At the same time I have seen this mantra fail. With each passing recruiting class and each passing football season, this message of uniting as “one” will be tested and judged by wins on the field and the ability of young people in Hawaii and across the country to want to come to Hawaii and support this cause.

You all have now added your name to the list of hundreds of Warriors that came before you.

What you do with the opportunity and responsibility given to you on this day is all up to you.

    Malama pono,
    Kevin
    Pearl City, HI

    This is Coach Mack’s response:

    Kevin,

Thank you for your kind words of support for our staff and our team. We appreciate your thoughtfulness in addressing the new members of our football Ohana. We believe we have recruited some outstanding young men who will represent the University of Hawaii and the State of Hawaii well.

    Mahalo and Aloha,

    Coach Mack

The Old Spice Red Zone High School Football Player of the Year program recognizes those high school football players who elevate their play and that of their teammates in the Red Zone. The Red Zone athlete embodies and exemplifies leadership and performance. He’s the one player the coach looks to when the game is truly on the line.

Corey was chosen from a large pool of nominees from more than 9,000 participating high school football teams to receive this honor. He is honored as one of 50 players across America who stood out among their peers for their exceptional performance in the Red Zone.

As one of the 50 Red Zone Players of the Year, Corey will be honored in a full-page congratulatory announcement in USA Today on Thursday, February 5, 2009 along with the newspaper’s coverage of National Letter of Intent Signing Day. He will also receive an Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year awards package.

High school coaches from across the country nominated one player from their teams as their Player of the Year. Each nominee received a certificate to acknowledge his accomplishment and was eligible for the national Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year award.

Heard Corey on BC’s show yesterday and BC asked him if he gets a years supply of deodorant! Come in handy after practice, wot?
Anyhoo, Congratulations to an outstanding Warrior!

Why would Toma consider UH if ND and UCLA offered? Might be some behind the scene stuff going on?
Would be great if he became a Warrior though!

  207. warriorfanny February 5, 2009 4:17 pm

Look, for anyone expecting Teo to become a ND phenom…well, u just aint thinking straight.
I like the kid, he has all the right stuff including a humble attitude. Without playing football he has done much to make his parents proud.
Teo will play in 2009, take a break in ’10 n ’11 and return in ’12. Now, ND has a policy on redshirting simular to the academies, so it’s a safe assumption that Teo will return following a 2 year layoff with 3 to play 3.
    Good luck.
If he does well, he deserves the accolade.
But what lays ahead–is not a speed bump but a major obstacle to climb.

    NorthShoreFan,

Toma should consider schools that fit his puny physique. He will get the living crap knocked out of him at ND or in the PAC-10 during the schedules those teams play. He is 160 and thin-framed. Even at 175, those 15 pounds aren’t going to jump on his bones overnight. Besides, at some point the weight hurts his speed, and he is not a speed burner at 160.

He should look for a place that is a good fit. The WAC, the MAC, the Weber States, the Portland States — that is Toma territory.

I’m not sure whose whispering BIG SCHOOLS in his ear, but I think they are doing him a disservice. He is going to chase top notch recruits every year just for a wee bit of playing time. By contrast, he could make some real contributions in the WAC or the MAC.

Yep, now that NLI day is over the next BIG announcement will be who will be filling the 2 vacant coaches positions.

Gotta squeeze again for the next 7 – 10 days until Coach Mack makes his choices public. Then, we can get euphoric again and chatter and chatter and chatter because no more surpises. Then, comes Spring ball – yeah!!!

For the high school recruits, don’t stop training! Keep running, lifting, speed & quickness drills, etc. cause no one can just “be in shape” in 2 months. Run on the beach (soft sand) – yeah it’s tough, but it will strenghten your legs and give you endurance. Ran Ala Moana beach for over 10 years doing 6 complete laps each time at lunch.

USC just recruited 4 of the top 6 safeties in the country, along with a lb that runs 4.4 and another than runs 4.5. No where to run or hide. Lucky for Toma, he won’t even see the field.

Before I fall into a deep sleep for the night I would like to say that I am very happy with boys that we have picked up through this years recruiting class. Once our coaches are put into to place and spring ball comes it will be interesting to see how steps up. With some of the new pick ups and walk-ons on the O-Line, it should be interesting to see who comes out from behind the crowd to become starter. For the defense I am totally excited to see what some of the young guys and walk-ons can do. With some of the names we have read that made the team through the walk-on tryouts, we will have a solid base to work with.

I have a feeling that this year will be a very special year. With all that we have lost on defense I just feel that the youngster that where behind them will come out flying this year. They all had very good role models to look up to and I just feel they will continue in their footsteps. All I gotta say is buckle you all seat belts and get ready for a good ole ride. YeeeeeeHaaaaawwwwww!!!!!!!

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Well, that explains #’s 1 and 13… I don’t think I ever heard WM sing… or that could just be my lack of memory cells.

Speaking of memory, I sure hope the HA web server has been beefed up for the webcast today. I’m going to miss it as my 9am Dr. appt has been changed to 11:20am, Tsai…

    Happy ALOHA FRIDAY to all!

I feel sorry for Toma. Or is it Rudy? I think he is in way over is head and he comes home in a body bag. 160 pounds. USC just recruited 4 of the top 6 safeties in the country, along with a lb that runs 4.4 and another than runs 4.5. No where to run or hide. Lucky for Toma, he won’t even see the field.

Go easy bu! Don’t be a hater! The kid is an outstanding playmaker in his own right, get on the specialized strength and conditioning program at ND, get bigger and stronger, more explosive and faster in several years he will contribute, special teams included. Best of luck to RT.

Wow, that sounds familiar. That’s the same thing that people said about Rich Miano in 1981.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!! Happy Friday!

Hope the streaming thing works at my office. Darn firewall!!

Mistake on my post from last night – Sorabol is still open. Looked like it was closed yesterday afternoon, but the neon sign was on this morning, so… Not that I go there very often…

I’m thinking about going to the Wahine softball game vs UAB this afternoon. Anyone else going?

  309. PIAA DS February 6, 2009 7:48 am

#303..i dont know who Lava is but on the sportshawaii site and this site he has nothing to say but negative comments about a 17 year old boy who made the decision he wants. Its apparent that Lava either knows him and doesnt like him or he’s very jealous. Hiding behind the blog, he can say what ever he wants. Sad if you are an adult Lava, very sad. And if you are a teenager, grow up and get a life.

    Jason,
thats only if they survive the homework and finals and the law. fresno hasn’t had a good history of keeping their players for one reason or another.

  313. lava February 6, 2009 8:17 am

Doris, I applaud everything you do, but in this one instance I think you and others have done a great disservice to this young boy. He is 160 pounds. He wasn’t highly rated by anyone, not before the season and not now, by the recruiting services, so leave my alleged bias out of it. I have seen stats that he is comparatively short and slow, and I didn’t hold the measuring tape or the stop watch. I have said he is a gutsy kid with great football instincts, and would be a great addition to the right team, like Boise State. He is not an every down player, even in the WAC. When he gets carted off on a stretcher, I hope maybe you’ll think twice before you encourage the next young man to risk his neck merely to take advantage of a free ride. He could have gotten a free ride to a lot of places, and had a great career. I’m entitled to my opinion, and I share it only to try and get people in your shoes to think twice about where to send kids. Not every kid is a good fit at every school. If he were my son, no way would I allow him to walk blindly into ND or UCLA. You know the athletes these days, you have linebackers who can be 6-3 and 240 and run a 4.5, and bench press 225 pounds 25 times. Can Toma bench press 225 once? That was the weight UH used at the recent walk-on tryouts.

Sometimes you stick a kid in a situation over his head and you set him up for failure. People in the know should have given him better guidance. I can’t imagine I’m the only one with what I feel is a very responsible attitude toward a guy 160 pounds who shortly will be going out of his league.

I am sorry if I have offended you, but my intentions are sincere. I have no hidden agenda, no axe to grind, to jealousy.

At any rate, we can agree to disagree. I applaud what you do for everyone else. I can’t think of another player where I’ve taken such a stance, but there aren’t many 160 pound guys getting offers to ND and UCLA either, although there has been at least one, George West, now a receiver with ND. He was 160 when he was recruited. He isn’t contributing much to the team, but he’s still breathing, and I think he’s up to around 200 pounds. I think he had one catch all of last year. That isn’t much for Toma to look forward to, when I think he could easily have 500 yards in receptions per year in the WAC.

Not so smart… A men’s basketball player from NM St tried to take weed with him on the roadtrip to Utah St and Nevada.

  315. TOM February 6, 2009 8:46 am

    Re: Toma:

Great to get a scholarship to a good school. Makes it easier for the parents. The object in the long run is to get a good education and not necessarily to score a million or even one TD.

After all, there was a really skinny kid from Punahou who shot baskets from afar who didn’t get a athletic scholarship who had to go to Columbia and Harvard …
