Class action

The Warriors’ 2012 recruiting class already has an NCAA-decorated player.

Returner/receiver Scott Harding, who was named to some 2011 all-freshman teams, counts toward the 2012 class. Harding was supposed to join the Warriors as a grayshirt in 2012. Instead, he decided to pay his own way for the 2011 fall semester. He is on scholarship this semester.

Colt Brennan, Dan Kelly and Luke Ingram followed the same path.

* * * * *

Linebacker Penitito Faalologo will not play for the Warriors this spring.

Faalologo signed with the Warriors in February 2011, and was supposed to report last July. But he remained in American Samoa because of a family situation. It is not known if he will join the Warriors this summer.

Receiver Justin Clapp has been impressive in offseason workouts and is being considered for a scholarship. His 2011 season was abbreviated after he suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Come on JT Turner! Get your butt in gear and your credits / academics in order so we can see you on the field with Mike Edwards, shutting down Matt Barkley’s Wide Receivers! Could this be the year? Morning, gang!

Great to hear that Justin Clapp has recovered & is doing well.

Class of 2012 looks winner-ful. Scott Harding was Mack’s find; we’re still benefitting from good recruiting back then.

    GO CHOW! GO WARRIORS!

  48. jkjones February 5, 2012 7:23 am

I see more receiver/RB packages under Chow mainly bc field position and situation will dictate formation. That means more players will be splitting PT. Which opens the door for the sure-handed Justin Clapp. With more packages it means more players will be involved bc it requires a specific talent. Simular to Boise State and USC.

This is a dramatic change from the run n shoot where receiver positions, once established, became a tenured position. I like the new system. It allows younger players to get involved early and gradually gain valuable game experience.

Often, under the RNS, substitutions were infrequent and the bulk of our starters became a cyclical affair–with sharp peak and valley periods. Hopefully, under Chow, we will see a smoother, consistent reloading product over a period of years rather than a rebuilding period every 2-3 years.

Congrads and best wishes to Justin Clapp.

    Steve:

    February 4th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Anybody watching the WBB Game, if so, what you think about the Refs? To me the Refs need to go back to Ref school.

Didn’t get to comment on Steve’s observation last night. Steve, I’ll ‘call’ and ‘raise’ you (in poker terms)! I was at that frustrating and ulcer-inducing game. There were numerous times where 2 to 3 Utah State girls were “mugging” and hacking Kamilah Jackson and Breanna Arbuckle with absolutely no call. The Utah State girls saw that the refs weren’t calling them most of the night so they got even more physical. On another egregious call, Breanna was driving for a lay-up when a Utah State player shoved her from behind and hacked her on the forearm, causing the ball to go out of bounds. What was the call? No foul, Wahine turnover…Utah State ball. Meanwhile the Wahine and even the Warrior men’s basketball team get called for ticky-tack fouls; it’s no wonder that Vander and Breanna want to strangle some of their WAC opponents (and maybe some of the refs?). Don’t know whether the officials are just vindictive for some reason or the other OR flat-out incompetent…maybe a combination of both. Before I forget though, gotta give credit to the Utah State players for their 3-point shooting ability and their swarming, disciplined defense. Still, if the refs had called the game evenly or consistently, it would’ve been a much closer and enjoyable game, win or lose.

  50. jkjones February 5, 2012 7:38 am

wahine BB is in need of better coaching more than it needs 20/20 optics on referee calls.

I dont believe favorable referee judgement will cure what ails our program.

  51. Derek February 5, 2012 7:48 am

My heart says Patriots. My head says G-Men.

  52. krump1_AKA_protector February 5, 2012 7:54 am

    ‘jkjones’ on #51,

You’re talking apples and oranges. What I was saying was that officiating made a difference in last night’s game. If you think the refs had no impact and that that was a high level of officiating, then you are less discerning than I thought you to be and we have to agree to disagree. Did I ever say I was necessarily happy with the coaching? No. And could anyone be happy with an 18 point lead turning into an 8 point win for the lady Vandals a couple of nights ago? Triple no! I never said “favorable referee judgement will cure what ails our program” and you totally misread and misunderstood what I wrote. Don’t put words into my mouth; that’s just a ;misguided projection on your part.

  53. mctruck February 5, 2012 8:02 am

jkjones, ur#49……right on; exactly how I feel as well.

  54. papajoe2 February 5, 2012 8:05 am

When coaching, I always tell my players that yes, the referees suck but we have to be better than that. Let us be outnumbered with the referees on their side. We still have to play this game and beat them. We CAN beat them inspite of it all so don’t let the bad calls take you out of your game. Just focus on what you have to do and win this game. Never, ever use the referees as an excuse. That would be the easy way out in too many games and the players would become losers thinking that the referees are out to get them. Be good enough to overcome the bad calls. Bad calls are for us fans to bring entertainment in the game so we can yell at someone and get some of the fustration out of our lives.

  55. jkjones February 5, 2012 8:08 am

Marrell Jackson and Quinton Brown’s weekend visit to paradise appears to have caused a charming infatuation with the two east coast ballers and the warrior program. That is, according to Hawaii’s ubiquitious blogging paparazzi. Even Sportsbow, Hawaii’s unofficial version of “coconut-certified”, has the two heralded recruits “Committed to UH” on his 2012 UH Football Recruiting list. According to this blog’s namesake, it appears both recruits will have to huddle with their parents first. That is less than solid. What about Ne’Quan Phillips? Reports say he is firm and will fax his signature.

Hopefully, the trip to Hawaii had more substantive effect than joyful memory for Marrell and Quinton. Still, with all the grousing over our decaying facilities at Manoa–Hawaii remains an intoxicating trip. Enuff at least, to cause a charming infatuation.

  56. kev-1 February 5, 2012 8:09 am

Glad to hear about “Mr. Reliable” Justin Clapp. For some reason, I thought he was pau already. I think he will get significant PT this year.

jkjones RE: 49 . . . very true. I like the idea of more players seeing the field in different situations. It especially gives you more of a chance to see who may be “hot” that day so you can start feeding that person the ball.

  57. krump1_AKA_protector February 5, 2012 8:10 am

Howzit DPK (on 46). You’re absolutely right! If he can do this much on short notice, it’s scary to think what he and his staff might do next year, especially if the team has a solid, successful season and a bowl appearance & win(?) to back it up. Sky’s the limit, baby! Trying hard to limit my optimism, but it’s getting harder and harder to.

  58. BigHiloFan2 February 5, 2012 8:11 am

    43.

Protector & DPK. i’m excited too. I am waiting for the USC game. and waiting to see how

Coach Chow gets our gang ready fo compete.

    46.

DPK. one year? no need. Coach Chow can handle in 5 weeks and da gang got 7 months.

he had a team meeting at 10:30 pm and spelled out his goals and expectations.

and kranking USC in da face i’m sure is one of his team goals, and also one of his expectations.

i agree with your assessment. hopefully more players being involved will mean more bettah for us.

    Go Coach Chow!

  63. krump1_AKA_protector February 5, 2012 8:23 am

    ‘papajoe2′ on #55,

What you said is gospel; the players themselves can NEVER get into that mindset and coaches DO have to instill it and ingrain it in their players. The anger and frustration is purely a luxury that only fans can afford. I do wish that somebody would edit last night’s game (and even other games) to make a montage of the officials’ especially incompetent calls and send them to the WAC for review. Perhaps it could be titled: “Those WAC-y Refs” or perhaps “When Refs go bad!”. Better yet, send it to You-Tube.

  64. Shadow February 5, 2012 8:25 am

Unlike last yr, expect substitutions if guys drop passes, miss blocks, can’t get open, etc. Practice is suppose to be when the mistakes are made – Game day is when you need to be near-letter perfect if you want to be a Top 25 team. Coach Chow & staff will make sure of it.

  65. BigHiloFan2 February 5, 2012 8:30 am

    i believe.

  69. jkjones February 5, 2012 8:35 am

    while digressing about visits:

A primetime west coast recruiter once told me, “if I was recruiting for Hawaii, I would take recruits straight from the Airport to the hotel, then, to the beach”. He went on, “you show the positives first”. Than added, “if they want to see the facilities, ill email them pics when they get home”. Makes sense. When was the last time you heard a used car salesman say “i know this car looks good but it leaks more oil than a WWII german tank”?

  70. smiley4284 February 5, 2012 8:36 am

“Colt Brennan, Dan Kelly and Luke Ingram followed the same path.”

Hopefully he doesn’t follow Colt’s embarrassing path to the NFL!

  71. kev-1 February 5, 2012 8:39 am

    awww come on smiley

Some people just wait for a chance to take a cheap shot at Colt.

  72. jkjones February 5, 2012 8:45 am

Colt brought national attention and fame to a staggering football program once on the ropes. For many Hawaii fans who embrace him, that memory alone remains inscripted in stone.

  73. Quan February 5, 2012 8:46 am

    😀

  74. A.M. February 5, 2012 8:48 am

I really want the women’s basketball team to succeed, but I keep thinking about their game against Idaho. I still can’t understand why K. Bello didn’t play very much in the 2nd half. She was motivated & scoring very well in the 1st half against her former team & was one of the key reasons why UH had an 18 pt. lead at one time.

Also, seems like they have no defensive adjustments both in this game & against Utah St. We are not a very good man-to-man team. And our freshman point guard needs help! She’s playing hard but she shouldn’t be playing so many minutes & she shouldn’t be guarding the opposing team’s hot shooter. Anyway, this whole team needs plenty, plenty, plenty help if they expect to be competitive next year.

  75. whitey February 5, 2012 9:05 am

morning tsaikos. don’t watch wbb, but do contribute to their team. seems that our tsaikos who watch wbb are not impressed with the coaches. from reading, it appears that the players are playing hard, but are not being taught or used correctly and the game management is not good. i don’t have any judgement on the team, but wish them well for the rest of the games.

  76. A.M. February 5, 2012 9:11 am

Whitey – you’re better off not watching wbb. It’s an excruciating experience at times. Talking football for this coming year is a whole lot more enjoyable & fun.

  77. SteveM February 5, 2012 9:19 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Good news on Justin Clapp!

  78. whitey February 5, 2012 9:22 am

am, thanks for the advice. i hope they do well, so their fans will embrace them. sometimes in adversity there is a silver lining, but right now, i don’t know where it is.

  79. whitey February 5, 2012 9:24 am

this is truly a most different type of recruiting by da warriors. don’t recall da warriors doing recruiting like this in the past. not counting rebounders, this is definitely a new direction for da warriors. go warriors!!!!!

  80. whitey February 5, 2012 9:27 am

for entertainment only, the o/u for supa bowl is going lower from when it first was posted. seems like the crowd here thinks it is not going to be a high scoring game. there are a lot of people from 808 here.

  81. Derek February 5, 2012 9:28 am

Don’t underestimate Brennan’s contribution. You are talking about 3rd place in the Heisman voting, from Hawaii!!! Unheard of! You cannot deny that Colt is a cult hero around here.

  82. whitey February 5, 2012 9:37 am

speaking of 808, the plane i was on was a sell-out. 250+ paxs from the plane i was on is spending ova 2 mil per day and this is just one plane. and they still insist gambling is not guud for 808. hawaiian has 3 flights per day from 808, united has at least one flight per day from each island, and there are others. not counting vacations, i think 10 mil per day spending is a very conservative number. and didn’t count the air, hotel, and ground transportation cost.

  83. jkjones February 5, 2012 9:40 am

    Re Wahine BB:

One thing about JD, he doesnt change drivers because the car has flat tires.

And while caution and fairness is preferred over an administrator with a “hair-trigger”, neither should a Costa Condoria Cruise ship disastor arise before the proverbial hook is used.

Another hindsighted anecdodal observation, you dont relace a druken sailor with a tinker or a tailor.

    The bottomline?

A seven-digit funding program should not be left withering on the vine.

Especially when it is nearly all accounted in RED.

Monies are sourced from public funds.

The ultimate decision should be outcome based, not a personal choice.

As we have seen with JD, too often, his timing comes precariousily close to the later before he acts.

To be fair to JD, in the most recent case, concerning a football coaching change, Donovan acted in reasonable fashion. Much to the relief of many.

I know not anyone who doesnt want coach Dana to succeed. She is homegrown. Everyone is rooting for her.

But, the pain of watching our team being mismatched or outwitted in nearly every contest, is unbearable to witness and serves no useful purpose to program, fans or coach. We are past the soothsayer or even the team’s gloomy record. It’s time to make a change.

  84. whitey February 5, 2012 9:41 am

ok, back to fb for da warriors. hope da warriors sign the last three recruits who were here. they can play!!!!!

  85. whitey February 5, 2012 9:46 am

that’s what i mean, another tsaiko not having guud words about the wbb coaches and they care about the program’s success. this not guud and jd will again have to make a soul searching decision. he does not need this kind of grief cause he get plenty other things to get squared away for the entire athletic dept.

  86. madeinhawaii February 5, 2012 9:53 am

I thought Justin didn’t pay for his tuition cause his father worked for the Athletic Department… I guess not, eh? This ain’t high school no more.

  87. A-House February 5, 2012 9:56 am

Signed/commited recruits if they do not attend school or go to a JC.

How long must UH hold their scholarship before terminating and awarding it to another player – such as a “walk-on” currently on the roster?

  88. BigHiloFan2 February 5, 2012 10:01 am

    Quan.

is that you? i’m blushing. 😉

    howzit howzit

i totally agree with you on the gambling Hawaii issue.

but we got da babuuze fakta fo consida,

once da Leg says no, gonna take a Glock fo make em change dare mind.

even wen day no day made a mistake, the Leg thinks of 99 reasons for backup their first decision, which is a No.

you know dat. i know dat. das why poho dat kine.

  91. Coach Duff February 5, 2012 10:09 am

I said this in a post a couple days ago, which seems to have been parked, but it is NOT hard to recruit big time kids to come to Oahu. Reinebold and me didn’t have any trouble getting solid players to look at our program. Heck I got Alex Green to come to Safford Arizona after timing his 40 in a high school hallway and he committed to Eastern Arizona JC that day. He wasn’t happy there so I helped him get to Butte JC and the rest is history. To recruit well, you have to be willing to outwork other coaches and programs. That is why good recruiters recruit well ANYWHERE they coach, they work their butts off every day. I found fast in the WAC that Hawaii was the most coveted destination in the conference next to Boise. I beat Fresno on Adam Leonard, SEC schools on LeMarcus Gibson, Big time schools on Jameel Dowling when he left Oregon, Mountain West schools on Lewis Walker, etc, etc.

All you have to do is let that kid feel some Aloha, walk around the most lovely ladies anywhere, see those palm trees and beaches and let that magic breeze hit his cheeks and he’s interested. Facilities? WHO CARES? WE got a practice field, a nice weight room and a stadium that might be rusty but baby it rocks on Saturday night. That whole facility excuse used to get a good laugh from me and sungod now and then. This staff gets it and General Chow is charging hard. I might even buy season tickets myself this year! GO WARRIORS! Duff

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Recruiting is the lifeblood for a program. Desertion, illiness can affect a program that was thin in players to begin with. I would imagine this is true with the WBB.

I do not know why the WBB had some players leave just at the beginning of the season, and a somewhat keyplayer leave in the middle of the season. I do know that the WBB had some infusion in the middle of the season of players that were not available at the very beginning.

But these are factors that must be considered rather than the automatic reaction of throwing someone under the bus.

  93. jkjones February 5, 2012 10:21 am

eh, coach duff, u know ur posts are never parked. heeheehe.

always great to hear from you.

btw, i was thinking about you everytime i hear about coach demarest. i swear you two are cloned as recruiters. he’s a good looking guy, too, that’s the only difference. lol. keep throwing those 10 lb onos you catch back into the ocean–that’s for native consumption. take care marine.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

mih – #88 – only employees get tuition waivers, not their dependents, unlike some other schools. At my alma mater, dependents were eligible for 4 yrs of tuition waivers if the parent had 10+ years of service.

#95 – go to where da sun don’t shine.

Congrats to the Warriors on their wins last night.

    Congrats to Na Pueo!

But then this was in the late 80’s early 90’s… things may have changed since. I mean, everywhere, benefits have pretty much dried up.

  107. Garret February 5, 2012 11:19 am

Judging from his play last season, I would think that Justin Clapp is worthy of a scholarship if UH has one available. Dependable hands, hard work, and a great spirit…I was really sad when he was injured because he was doing a great job for the team.

  108. Garret February 5, 2012 11:23 am

Congratulations to Colorado State for reaching their $500 mil fundraising goal in 2.5 years, when their goal had been to raise that in 6 months. Their academic improvements, facility improvements, and on-campus stadium without any tax dollars is a great example to the other MWC schools. It is too bad that they aren’t really doing this to boost the MWC…they are openly trying to get into the Big 12. Colorado State knows that the Big 12 needs 2 more schools in 4 years and they are trying to get better in a hurry.

CSU today announced that in December, it reached its ambitious $500 million goal for the university’s first-ever comprehensive campaign – six months before the official end of the Campaign for Colorado State

Private giving is more important now than ever, given the financial realities of our state and the challenges many of our students face in paying for their education in a tight economy.

    $508.3 million raised to date

    89,757 donors

Donors from 50 states and 50 countries

One more thing. I think that there are many travel insurance web-sites of respected companies that allow you enter your vacation details and acquire you the estimates. You can also purchase an international travel insurance policy on-line by using your current credit card. All you have to do is to enter all travel specifics and you can begin to see the plans side-by-side. Only find the program that suits your finances and needs and then use your bank credit card to buy that. Travel insurance on the internet is a good way to check for a respected company pertaining to international travel insurance. Thanks for expressing your ideas.

    great game today.

which reminds me, how many more years can we play in Aloha Stadium, honestly? do we have to have something fall down before we get serious about a fix or a new stadium?

do we have to get pushed into a corner first?

is this a Honolulu issue or a State issue?

  141. Steve February 5, 2012 6:37 pm

bhf2 (145) – If I am not mistaken it is a State issue. As for your question about Aloha Stadium, do you remember the old Honolulu Stadium, otherwise known as the Termite Palace. Well that should give you a clue, the State did not do anything until they found out that the only thing that was holding up that old stadium were the termites. We must have some super strong termites here in Hawaii. So with that in mind, the State will not decide on a New Stadium, until only the rust is holding up the Current one. 🙁

  145. Steve February 5, 2012 7:20 pm

whitey (149) – Yes, they were big, like Wes Keliikipi, and Nate Illaoa were. Iosefa, would fit right in with the Giants RB group.

  146. Hendo February 5, 2012 7:41 pm

Interesting that Tom Coughlin, the coach of this year’s Superbowl champion, NY Giants, is 65 years old, which is the same age as Norm Chow. I am happy that no one complains anymore about Norm Chow being 65 years old and is supposedly too old for the job. And they were a lot people who mentioned that this was an important criteria for them in selection our new coach. I’m pretty sure Giants fans have no complaints about Tom Coughlin being too at at 65.

  151. d1shima February 5, 2012 8:30 pm

Despite the loss today, Belichick should still get credit for taking his team as far as they did.

Of course, nothing Belichick does will transform the Patriots’ defense into a great one; they don’t have the talent. But coaching is about more than talent. It’s about taking the talent that’s available and giving it the best possible chance to succeed.

Interesting read on the development of modern defenses and more to the point how Hawaii may deal with any personnel deficiencies in Coach Chow’s first season.

He is a little nuts –

Colt let us down? A person who relinquished a chance to make $$$ by coming back to UH for his fourth year? A person that took us to the Sugar Bowl?

The persons that lets him down are the ungrateful would-be or so-called fans

that are taking pot shots at him.

    Well said, Tom!

I often wonder what would have happened if Colt entered the draft after his junior year. He might be playing in the NFL today if he went then. But he stayed for Hawaii and the rest is history. I just hope there is a legitimate shot for him in the pros yet.

  156. kev-1 February 5, 2012 8:44 pm

POCOLOCO . . . you really let us down too. Wait, I don’t know you. And you don’t owe us anything. Oh that’s right, neither does Colt. Find something better to do with your time than to piss on someone elses reputation when it has nothing to do with you. If you feel let down by an athlete because HE didn’t make it, that says more about your own dissatisfaction with your own life.

  157. kev-1 February 5, 2012 8:48 pm
