Warriors prepared for overtime
With all of the ceremonies and television specials — heck, even Na Koa is planning a $2,500-a-table event — it is easy to overlook that the signing period is a month, not one just one day.
The Warriors expect to learn today whether scholarship offers to about three prospects will be accepted. But they do not expect to fill all of their scholarships when their 2012 recruiting class is announced tomorrow afternoon.
That’s because the Warriors plan to bring in up to four prospects for visits this weekend.
It is not a unique strategy. Linebacker Adam Leonard was a late addition to the 2005 class. He ended up having a celebrated career with the Warriors.

If you’re keeping score, grayshirt linebacker Lance Williams of Farrington High and transfer quarterback Taylor Graham of The Ohio State count as part of this year’s recruiting class.

Sometimes the best prospects can be found on the roster.
Craig Cofer, who was used sparingly as a defensive end last year, is set to move to tight end. It makes sense. Cofer is tall (6-5), strong (400-pound bencher) and athletic. He also draws comparisons to Chad Lewis, who played tight end in Norm Chow’s offense at BYU. Lewis, who had joined BYU as a walk-on, eventually played for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Warriors will have at least three tight ends in spring training — Cofer, Waylon Lolotai (a converted offensive lineman) and Clark Evans, a JC All-American who enrolled at UH about two weeks ago. Two more join this summer.

Preliminary plans call for the Warriors to conduct spring practices in the afternoon, with starting times about 3:30 p.m. Spring training opens March 17.

these final four are probably going to do the “eenie, meenie, miny, moe” if it got down to it. however, realize this, that it’s a decision that needs to be endorsed by the family as well. there in lies where many recruits could end up not where there heart is, but, rather where mom and pop want him to go.
a decision that affects a guy for the next 4-5 years is a tough one to make sometimes.

De’jon Coleman from Arlete High School. Set a city record with 47 TDs and 2,029 yards. Only 17 and won’t be 18 till November. Listed at 5-10 175 pounds. Might be worth a look with Coprich committing to Cal.
Marshaun Coprich- Jeff’s cousin who is another 2,000 yard rusher.

the cofer switch to TE is intriquing. @ 6-5, 250, craig has plenty size. Chow will be using a variety of TE packages so cofer can earn a spot if he can at least block. looks like the staff has been busy in evaluating returning players as well as recruiting. great to see a busy staff and tireless work ethic. hopefully, it will trickle down to players as well.
it is not uncommon for new head coaches to make immediate impact on players and often need to crack-a-whip to make their point. urban meyers shut down workouts temporarily in his first spring at gainsville bc he didnt like the lackadaisical approach towards training. Rich Rodriquez’s new training regimine was initially so tramatic at A2, several starters left the program, including an All-Conference OLM.

Hawaii just edged out by Fresno state (voting 42-44) as a preseason favorite to win the WAC this season.
Hawaii was favored last season and was voted 3rd in 2010 in the preseason voting. Apparently the margin of 44-42 in voting favoring Fresno State was the “closest” margin ever.

Iosefa is a beast but Coach should put Elisara at FB too. He played the position in high school and is also a big bruising back. He gained weight but he could be used for blocking and short yardage situations.
I like the fact that Lakalaka is not afraid to make contact and lower his pads on someone. He will get stronger and faster too, gonna be exciting. I’d like to see what we have in Will Gregory though from last years recruits. Rated the 46th best running back in the nation gotta mean something.
Signing “Day” for football runs for two months from Feb. 1 (This year) to April 1. After that kids can still get scholarships, they just do not sign a letter of intent.

Mike Bass wasn’t a good running back at all. That guy would forever lose his footing and couldn’t take a hit at all. I’d say they are more like some Daniel Libre types as far as size goes…

But the trend of the Pac 12 coming back with a vengeance and reclaiming or taking these recruits is a little scary.

How’s the saying? “If can, can. If no can, no can.” Can’t hate on these kids for wanting to go away. It is a huge, important decision for any high school senior to make, athlete or not. Do I go away and experience something completely new and exciting to begin my adulthood, or do I stay home with mom and dad. Football is only a part of the decision for these young men.

HAWAII THREE STAR SAFETY Taylor Taliulu switched his commitment from WSU to Hawaii on Sunday. But after talking it over with his family the past 24 hours, he tells CF.C the right choice for him was the one he made back during the summer.
I dont see the horseshoe analogy in Hawaii’s case….perhaps, in past regimes. The fact that Hawaii was organized, showed tactical presence and was able to convince at least two locals to de-commit from PAC 12 programs and snatch another who was leaning–that is huge. They were aamong the top 10 in Hawaii. It bodes well for the future. Chow & Co were enjoined in battle to win, not come close. but, like all things in life, to be successful, short memory and relentless effort is required. Nothing will be settled this recruiting season except for one caveat to the BCS huns–come prepared, you are in our backyard.

i guess this is chow’s first real “wake up call” and the difficulties associated with recruiting to UH. here’s to hoping he has a solid plan for recruiting in the future.
also hope this doesn’t discourage him from doing the full court press year in and year out. these kinds of disappointments are what led jj and mack to pretty much give up recruiting hawaii.
Way to stay positive guys. Brostek never committed to UH, so we lost nothing there. Two de-committs are not the end of the world. These were long shots. The kids made visits, bonded, and made committments out of excitement. They got home, and their parents probably said . . . “uh, uh, I don’t think so. You are going.” Now they have to de-commit.
I truly believe this recruiting class will be about the offensive side of the ball. As long as we hold on to those, we should be okay.
Brostek to me is a good player and I wish we had him but he won’t do anything at Washington. Hope Coach Chow closes the door for players who rejected Hawaii out of college and then decide they want to come back. It is harsh but there is a reason why we can’t keep players in state. I do not like being a fall back option if things do not work out at other schools

I don’t think Chow is learning the disappointments of recruiting– he recruited at BYU against Pac 12 teams. At UCLA he recruited against USC, Stanford, and Oregon. He has even recruited against Hawaii. He knows all about it.

That’s a gamble based on principal and when an opportunity presents itself to a coach to improve his or her chances to win, isn’t it a coach’s job to take that opportunity. That being said, and without naming names, countless student-athletes have returned to UH from other places to make an impact in several sports, even UH football.
Huh? Taliulu switched back to WSU after talking to his family? Seriously? They want him to go to school in Pullman?? I don’t know what bill of goods they were sold but unless Tayler plans to major in veterinary medicine or plant science, WSU has nothing on Manoa academically. Nada.

Mike Leach brings a lot of attention to the program there. People will have their eyes on WSU for a few years. Especially to check the storage rooms in case there are any players being treated for concussions in there.

Ok you said “maybe”, so it is a gamble and all D1 coaches take chances at some point, but closing the doors completely eliminates a potential positive “what if”. Coaches play the numbers game all the time, as in playing the odds, they will accept players that can contribute back for sure if the opportunity and time is right.
Bottom line, UH football is NOT in a position yet to make big body with a close door approach to departing local kids.
But diamonds in the rough can be developed with lesser known kids.
Jerry Rice, for example, in high school Rice played just about every position, from quarterback to tackle…but only one college recruited him, tiny Mississippi Valley State.

by us losing recruits to pac12 folks is a good sign of the times. that means that we are doing the right things in evaluating talent. nobody gets all the ones that they want. at least we are in the game for these guys and it will only get better. chow and company have only been at it for four weeks.

LOL. This is like when a boy takes out a girl for a month and is totally bummed out when she ditches him. He thought it was true love but most times you can’t get true love in a month. However if they go together for a year then that’s another story. By then they are very secure and trusting of their commitments to each other.
All I can say is that our coaches went for the fairest maidens unlike in past years. We have to give them credit for trying but perhaps we should expect to be ditched by some of them because the courtship was very short. Early courtships are fun and exciting. But once in a while ……ouchee!
ST, we will see tomorrow, if they are just giving you lip service, or not. If they turn out to be giving you “lip service” never believe anything they say again.

Yes we have a good recruiting class and it will get better as time goes on so nothing to worry about. The commitment and attitude to move the program forward is being demonstrated by this coaching staff. It is good that our Hawaii players have the opportunity to attend college on the mainland if that is their desire but please parents teach your child not to be indecisive and as someone put it wishy washy.

Coach Chow is a true professional and I am certainly excited and happy that he is aboard. We recruited the right coach and see how much excitement that he has already brought to UH Warrior Football!! This is just the beginning!!!
We should all just wait until tomorrow when all the faxes have been received and then we will know for sure. No sense getting over excited and assuming things. Our returning players will do well under Coach Chow. Nothing to worry about have a great day.

i was skeptical of coach chow’s hiring, but wanted to see if my skepticism was right or wrong. he got on his horse and was off to the recruiting roundup which impressed me cause i neva knew he could recruit. i thought he was a great teacher/coach, but had no inkling on his recruiting prowness. i think now he is on track to do very well his first season and he is generating a new enthusiasm at uh. this could be the start of a revival of warrior football interest in the state.

i feel bad for lakalaka. one of his “best friends” straight up betrayed him by not even mentioning going back to wsu after re-affirming their commitments about UH last night.
steven lakalaka is a true warrior. and exactly the type of kid we want in our program representing the university, community, and state. all others need not apply.
I would love for all athletes to stay home. But love more seeing them get a opportunities to further their education. I soon will be in that situation in a few years with my kids.
Ya im happy with the kids that we got. good teams have good line play. I see why coach chow heavily recruiting that area.
Kids that go away give me a reason to watch those teams. Since mantai and his teammate went to notre dame I always watch their games.
My attitude to the recruits is if you don’t to be a Warrior then we don’t want you.
Going for the best is the best strategy,but for Hawaii it is best to look for kids with potential three for years down the road; developement of talent should be the hallmark of Hawaii football. Kids still growing into their shoes will mean bigger stronger kids down the road.
Also maybe sifting through the public school rosters will turn turn up hungrier, more determined,strong minded
atheletes, above all play with kids that want to be here.

These are 17 year old kids making what possibly is the biggest decision in their lives. Their retrospect is very limited. I don’t blame them if they waffle or are indecisive. I can still see Jeremy Perry just cringing at his decision on signing day. It’s tough.
Bottom line is I want kids who want to be here. Not because you or I said they should be here.
They don’t have to be 3, or 5 star rated. Just have the desire and passion to get a good education, play their best and represent us well.
I’ll be happy with whomever commits to UH tomorrow. I’ll welcome them with open arms.
As for the local kids that will choose to go abroad, I applaud them all and support each and every one of them. I hope they make us all proud. If any of them should ever cross UH on the battlefield, I expect them to represent their colors with pride, play like Warriors and bring their A-game against us.

17 year old boys should go where their hearts take them, not where their parents tell them to go. If they dreamt of becoming Warriors growing up, who are their parents to take their dream away and send them to ass freezing weather for 4 or 5 years? Parents, let them live their dreams and be Warriors.
If their dream is to go away, then bless them and send them on their new journey. Some return home realizing that Hawaii is home and that is where they belong. Welcome them home if they return.
Best way to keep our best local players home and attract the best players from the rest of the world is to win.
Coach Chow has begun recruiting Hawaii players and mainland players with a tenacity and spirit not seen in previous coaching staffs. Good things will happen with time. I believe.
Actually the guy I’m excited about landing is Kiha Sai. I think that guy is a more important recruit than Taliulu or even Brostek. He could anchor our O-line for years to come. Thank you for becoming a UH Warrior, Kiha!

Hey, I am amazed how quickly the tide turns. I am still looking forward to tomorrow. getting Benny F (don’t want to misspell), Mr. Sai and others who are our local boys who chose to become Warriors is a big deal. If Mr. Brostek chooses UW, all the best, if Mr. Taliulu changed back to WSU, okay. And too, if Mr. Lakalaka decides to become a Bruin.
Coach Chow did his best in the little time he had to cultivate the interest of these young men and yes, it may have been too little too late.
The alternative if we did not make a coaching change…no even try. Would we have been happier with that effort?

I agree with you. This is a lot of pressure on these young men. It’s probably the biggest decision of their young lives.
If some of them decide that they want to try to live away from home and experience life elsewhere, then so be it. I applaud whatever decision they make and wish them all the best. I cannot condemn them for their decision. Those that decide to stay and get an education at the University of Hawaii and to play for the home team, then that is great. Of course, we are all very happy when that happens. But it is big decision for these young men and also their parents.

Just saying I think that it is good that a young man is able to get a scholarship and go to college. But it bothers me when people say that I need to be happy for those who choose to go away. I am a Warrior fan so I support and cheer for all who choose to play for the home team. The players who play for other teams will get their support from their families, friends and the fans of whatever school they go to. They made their choice and there is nothing wrong with that. There is just one team that represents Hawaii and that is the team that I cheer for. Just saying.

For recruits, there will not be another point in the time of their lives where they will experience the greatest love and the greatest bs from coaches.
No wonder for some, their heads are spinning.
But the decision has to be right for them. They need to sleep on it, ask God for direction and hopefully get peace about their decision in the morning.
If its any consolation, every school in Div. I is probably going through what the Warriors are going through. It seems to be more so this year bc there are lots of coaches, especially the really good recruiters, changing jobs due to the big money the BCS schools are receiving from the TV contracts. Do the kids follow the coaches? The kids start riding the roller coaster just like the fans.
Despite all this, the Warriors will be fine.

You, my friend, have absolutely no idea what you’re talking / blogging about!
It’s apparent you haven’t spoken to some of local high school standouts over the past few seasons yourself. I, and it reads that some others that frequent the WB indeed have talked to some / many / few of those kids.
In my opinion, and again I understand we all have one, what went on during the past 4 seasons as far as recruiting goes, especially local kids, was a complete and utter disgrace, a sham, a farce, a joke, a lack of effort, poor evaluating, very poor contact and / or communication with the kids, their families and most importantly their high school coaches.
I suggest that if you know a kid, or maybe even a coach, go ahead an ask them what they feel about U-H coaches recruiting efforts over the past few seasons.
Again, please do not take this as any dis-respect because none is intended. I just wanted to share with all what I know, much different from what some may think.

But I do think that’s the minority point of view. I feel most people aren’t happy that a kid decides to go but they don’t begrudge his decision.
The pros and cons of staying home or going away have been debated since the Tomey years. It’ll continue as long as UH has a football team.
I do follow the careers of the kids that make a name for themselves else where. I’m happy for their success. It still brings me pride when someone like Manti flashes the shaka on National TV.

I got burned 2x playing this game.
I visited my first school over spring break when everyone was gone. Turned out everyone in the school is white. I transferred the next year after visiting a cold weather school in July. Winter came in October and last into May. I’ve never seen more depressed, binge drinking, overweight people in my life. I transferred again the next year. Live and learn.

@ Gambit- rajah that- the alcohol rate amongst teens is crazy– meth pretty big too- worked with native men to try and reconnect them back to their families– very difficult. . . as far as Pullman- you know it is truly a bleak and dreary place in the winter- summer was a lil better- I enjoyed my time on Bainbridge Island as well as the Olympia area. . . wish the brother the best of luck!

So much speculation going around. I am glad the negativity that permeated the blog this afternoon has waned. People gotta give these guys a break. They are making HUGE decisions about their future. Can’t knock them for looking away. There is so much the world outside of Hawaii has to offer. One of my biggest regrets as an adult is that I have been so “sheltered” out here in Hawaii. I love my home and wouldn’t trade it for the world, but often feel like I should have experienced something else. At least for a little while. I applaud these young men for at least considering the opportunity to benefit themselves. Whether it be in Hawaii, Pullman, or wherever else.

I just read a touching story about a Wazzu commit who made his declaration not in front of TV cameras, not at a school assembly, or anywhere else. He made it at his mother’s hospital bedside. She has been in a coma for over a month. He sat there and called Leach so his mother could hear him make the committment over the phone. She raised him as a single mother, and apparently it has not always been easy. He believes she heard him. I think so too.
Let’s not lose sight of what going away to college might mean for some families. Opportunites that were never available to them, are now suddenly presented to their children. Parents want what’s best for their children, and sometimes that means going away.
Garret: Nice story. He gets to live his dream after serving his country. Good for him. I wish him well.

Why a disadvantage? A school on the continent fills all their scholarships but has one more to give. They look at Hawaii and says it’s not 12 am there in the islands yet. See who is committed to Hawaii that we can make a last hour poach before they are allowed to receive their commits.
If all schools can use the EST that is okay. If not another thing that needs to change. East coast has the greatest advantage as time moves to the west.

To me, the offensive line is the most important part of any football team. If you can run the ball, and give the passer time, it’s pretty hard to stop you. And it seems like we are going to pick up some excellent lineman. With a killer offensive line, even our blog host could run for a 100 yards a game. i NEVER give up on a kid, unless the kid gives up on hisself. Taliulu was in the moment, and tried to help his friend out, tried to help himself out, tried to help Hawaii out. and he went and made public comments. about himself. about the Warriors.

i care for Hawaii football. really do. and i care for Taylor Taliulu. two weeks ago that name did not mean anything to me. now it does. now he does. up to him. i gave him my best advice. honest advice. his coice. and like i said, it won’t bother me, his choice. but he’ll have to live with his choice. and i know people. i’d rather spend time with my dog than with people. my dog is honest and means me well. can you say that about your neighbor? thats what i’m saying. we have some aama crab kinda neighbors. i don’t want that for a well meaning young man who only meant us well. now he’s gotta suck it up. whatever his choice, his speech writing gotta be his A game. for real.
I have nothing against the kids that go away on a scholarship. I’m happy for them and proud that our island boys have garnered the attention of schools here as well as those as far away as UMass. I wish them well. If they do well and I hear about them cause they make the sports headlines in our local papers, then it makes me feel proud. If they do something wrong and I read about it, I feel the shame, too. But if they are good enough to start but not good enough to get written up about locally, I’ll soon forget who they are and their names will never ring a bell for me. Still, I will wish them well, when I am reminded by someone, because they are from Hawai’i.

As much as anybody else, I would have loved for him to chose UH, but at the end of the day he’s still a kid born and raised in Hawaii, on of ours so to speak, and I for one, wish him nothing but the best.
Except of course, when Washington plays UH.
As a matter of fact, that goes for any kid that does indeed chose to go away for college, he/she is still one of ours, and I will always root for them.
mih, how true. just take one name out of the hat, michael carter. a lot of people in hawaii know who he is and still remember him, but i’ll bet in his hometown, not many will remember him. somehow the kids who play for uh, no matter what sport, are long remembered after their playing days.

Not sure how long you have been on this blog, but you are talking about the same guy that has for a FACT made personal attacks on student-athletes in the past and has made FALSE accusations about UH coaches and has in FACT attempted to cite former student-athletes for supposedly being the source of false information, thus adding another victim to his character assasination diatribes.
If one is going to lie about others, one should make sure that the people he lies about and also tries to include in his lies are not known to others reading the false information.
Nothing he says is of any value unless words can be turned into toilet paper.

From a business point of view, no matter what degree you present at a job interview there is always someone who can do it better and cheaper then you. What will save/help you are your connections.
To you recruits sitting on the fence, read the book “The World Is Flat” by Thomas Freeman. Basically, U.S. workers are getting outpaced behind workers from all over the world. Unless any graduate in the U.S. understands what is happening and going to happen in Asia, he/she is at a huge disadvantage.
This is where UH and the East-West Center proves it’s worth. The world is flattening out and the U.S. is not at the pinnacle anymore, nor are U.S. students. However, the student who understands Asia will climb the ladder quicker. And in Asia, they don’t care much for football, they care more about culture, relationships. In contrast in the U.S. we are more ego-centric, individualistic.
So when you choose your university, think of course about football, but also think about this-China annually has over 1 million unemployed college graduates who are equal to or better then the average U.S. graduate. India is the same. When you graduate, more then any of us here you will be facing competition from top students by the tens of millions from India, China, Korea, Singapore, etc…
So my opinion is this for the current generation graduating from high school…is a degree from Hawaii or Washington or wherever else going to make a difference? No, it won’t. However, what will are two things. First is your connections, and second is your understanding of Asia.
I’m saying this because I’m based in Southeast Asia. I can tell you kids from UH excel here and make a name because kids from Hawaii are blessed with understanding both East and West. To you recruits, think bigger. Think football, think degree, then think job or creating a business. I can 100% guarantee you what you do after college will be influenced from Asia. Understand a “flat” world, and understand where Hawaii and Hawaii’s people are undeniably uniquely poised to shine.
Governor, are you hearing me? Put money in football, put money in almost anything UH. Market UH all over Asia-not just Japan and China because this generations opportunities will come from such things as MNCs in Southeast Asia. It’ll come from the thousand of independent U.S. business owners who need a U.S. link in Asia or has an understanding or connections in Asia.
For you recruits, I know this was long, but so is college and so is your life. My opinion, stay home because when the pads come off, your connections and your understanding of culture will separate you from the millions of degree holders you will be competing with. And culture, understanding and respecting cultures comes natural to all of us in Hawaii. It may seem simple to us, but in other places in the world to have an American who respects and understands your culture is huge deal. This is where UH and things like the East-West Center, the sheer diversity of the people and cultures in Hawaii will clearly make you more desirable in the “real world” then you ever were as a recruit.

Kevin, I would not talk to much. I have friends that have contributed to the Softball program, but have not gotten what they were suppose to get for contributing. Not even a thank you, letter. They are not very happy about it. They feel you people are just a bunch of crooks, hiding behind the Softball program.

Local recruits, here is something to think about. How many Warriors are playing in the NFL, or CFL, compared to the ones that went away. If my count is right, there are more Warriors playing in both the NFL and CFL, then there are the ones that went away. One main reason, when you are a Warrior, you play, not ride the bench. Mainland schools can easily get better players then you. The Warriors cannot always, so you play and gain valuable experience, inside of just riding the bench, not gaining any playing experience. By the way, those Warriors that are playing at the next level, have are playing a dominant role for their professional team. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!

As Wednesday morning arrives, I wan to thank Doris for all that she does. It is easy to talk or (write on a blog) but she is actively helping our student athletes throughout the year. From combines, to clinics, to SAT prep classes, to establishing a clearinghouse and hosting their videos and information, she does quite a bit all through the year. Of course, for all this work, she gets paid nothing.
This morning we are off to downtown for Signing Day and lets see, she organized that too.
Feb 1 should be Doris Sullivan Day for all that she does.
