Lakalaka, Taliulu commit to Warriors

In statement-making moves, running back Steven Lakalaka of Punahou School and safety Taylor Taliulu of Kamehameha Schools “de-committed” on pledges to Pac-12 schools to accept scholarship offers from the Warriors.

Lakalaka had made a commitment to UCLA; Taliulu was set to go to Washington State.

Both told the Warrior Beat tonight they wanted to be part of a new tradition at UH. They said they will sign with the Warriors on Wednesday.

* * * * *

Dejon Allen, a lineman from Dominguez (Calif.) High, and Jerrol Garcia-Williams, a linebacker from Palo Verde High in Las Vegas, have made oral commitments to the Warriors.

Allen is 6-3 and 265. He recently de-committed from Arizona State. He can play either on the offensive or defensive line.

Garcia-Williams is 6-2 and 215 pounds.

* * * * *

The next 48 hours will shape the Warriors’ 2012 recruiting class.

What would make it a success? To land a multi-star prospect? To get a mainland-pledged local recruit to change his mind? Just making the effort?

* * * * *

There was an interesting break during the recruiting visits.

Kamehameha safety Taylor Taliuli and running back Steven Lakalaka both were excused for a few hours so they could play in their high school basketball games. They faced each other. Taliulu scored 17 points, but Punahou won the game, 59-57. Lakalaka had six points.

After the game, they resumed their UH visit.

hope the mainland recruits enjoyed their visit to hawaii and also hoped the local recruits enjoyed UH enough to commit tomorrow!

t-minus 3 days til LOI day! c’mon dr. chow! reel em in and seal the deal!

  6. cheepono January 29, 2012 1:37 am

i’m lovin the effort, but the “success” of this recruiting class is based on who’s name is on the faxed LOI’s that come in to the football office on feb. 1.

  7. ai-eee-soos January 29, 2012 1:38 am

What would make it a success?

Have ALL the prospects commit. Then have the coaches determine who plays in the fall,

and who grayshirts. AND make the grayshirts keep their commitment next spring.

wishin’ and a hopin’ for the best.

multi-star, change of heart and rebounder–all three would work. Effort only counts in horseshoes.

In my opinion, Coach Chow and his staff are laying the groundwork for the future. They are trying to plant seeds in the field. They are out there working long hours under the hot sun, making a valiant attempt to throw out good seeds hoping to yield a good crop. We all know that when we plant seeds, it takes awhile for those seeds to grow before we can go out and begin harvesting.

The problem that we have is that, some of the ground maybe hardened and the seeds cannot take hold. Some of the seeds may take hold but may get choked out by the weeds.

What is the hardened ground? I’m not sure. What are the weeds, I’m not sure about that either. Perhaps bloggers who are smarter than I am can elaborate better on those points. My point is that we all know what needed to be done. The new head coach and staff are doing the things that needed to be done. However the farmer doesn’t plant today and then harvest tomorrow. He waits for a season before he harvests. The farmer plants, waters, prunes, waters again, waits, waters, prunes, waits, and then harvests down the line.

Our harvest may not come this recruiting season but wil come eventually. Do the right things, and right things will happen.

Hawaiians call it being Pono. Be Pono, be righteous. Then good things will be the result.

Chow needs to recruit a good running back or two, plus a couple of rush ends. Current commit list looks good. Hoping for best.

#12… Pride… well said. I don’t know if any specific recruit will make or break this year’s class, but the foundation is being laid for our future. Those that we do bring in will be taught and trained accordingly, and everyone’s combined efforts will be reflected on the field. I am extremely optimistic in the direction we’re taking. While education is still number one, the overall athletics philosophy has changed from just competition to chasing championships, with greater collective effort by all involved… not just a select few on each tier.

Wait, am I rambling on? Let me get some coffee first.

Morning, everyone! Hope we all have a great day!

Hey, you no old enought to see squirmin Herman … are you?

The success of this year, any year, recruiting class is Did UH get what they need to compete at the highest level. Changing from run-n-shoot to pro-style is probably a three to four year recruiting challenge, and that’s just on offense. There is a new defense too. It took Jerry Glanville a couple years to get the defensive team speed up to where it needed to be to compete at the highest level defensively. Recruiting will find those coachable diamonds in the rough. Coaching is what will polish those diamonds.

  27. Hillmok January 29, 2012 5:57 am

ST- To try to answer your question on what would make this recruiting class a success I would have to go back to 1985 that year we landed some big time talent off a sub .500 season. Those players included local boys who were being courted by major collegeslike Nick Maafala, Leo Goeas, Junior Tyrell, and mainland recruits highly recruited like Larry Jones, Walter Briggs, Jaime Collins. That was one of Dick Tomey’s most successful recruiting classes of all time which set the foundation for beating BYU and Iowa for the next head coach Bob Wagner. That class like this class is setting the foundation for the future and in that class included the multi-stars, and the local kids who ended up staying home. Another class like that would equal the success class of 1985.

  28. Pauoa Boy January 29, 2012 5:58 am

As long as the boyz are coachable and can adapt quickly to Coach Chows way of doing things then we be au’ryte. There is talent already on the team that hasn’t had a chance to showcase what they can do yet. With the new crop of studs coming in and the guys already on board as long as they get coached up the right way to utilize their talents, we should be golden. I wouldn’t expect too much this season as everyone needs to get suited and booted correctly and find their position and roles on the team. As long as they work hard and put the effort out on the field I’m sure the Coaches will lead them in the right direction. We already get studs on the team that haven’t been tapped into yet and have been waiting for their chance. I think Joey Iosefa gonna be a beast in the backfield with Coach Chow. Should move Elisara back there as a FB too. Will Gregory should finally get a legit chance to show why he was rated as the 46th best running back in the country. Guys like Ijumaa Armstrong, Chinedu Amadi, Justin Vele, etc… are all waiting to get their shine on too. We already get some beasts on the line as well and I think Lefotu is going to be a monster in Coach Chows offensive scheme. He’ll finally be able to maul people. Plus we saw glimpses of some up and comers… Mike Edwards is going to be big time, Scott Harding is a blue collar guy and should be much improved this year, Sellers was solid, Anguay should be fully healed and ready to take some to the house, Art Laurel is already a menace, my main man John Hardy-Tuliau is already a beast, Davis at WR showed glimpses and hopefully guys like Chris Gant and Cecil Doe will be better suited in this type of offense. In any case I know there is enough talent on the team to make it work.

  29. d1shima January 29, 2012 6:19 am

good morning and blessings to all the Tsaikos out there,

Coach Chow is establishing the groundwork, the foundation, the building blocks for continued success. This is not going to be a ‘flash in the pan’ tenure, I look forward to a very solid and strong foundation for years to come. The realization is that Coach Chow got in the recruiting game pretty late this year, but he is still making strides.

Good luck to the Warriors and Coach Chow, exciting times ahead for all of us 🙂

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Well put! PRIDE, WESTSIDE, BULLA & AL.

Contrary to some who anticipated instant results, the groundwork has been laid – pretty successful in my mind – for the future. I hope that the harvest will be successful in the years to come. But what has emerged so far looks promising!

Big Hilo I played against those local guys in high school, and later became very good friends. I remember Tom Osbourne flew in from Nebraska to meet Nick face to face. When he signed with UH, I thought his signature alone would call it a successful recruiting class, but when Leo Goeas turned down Washington and BYU and signed it became a very sucessful recruiting class. I like to measure recruiting by how our rivals have recruited, meaning if I put my 19 or so recruits up agains Boise’s recruits in a game of 11 on 11 what would the outcome look like?

  41. tom mui January 29, 2012 8:11 am

    @39 hillmok

I understand that the locker rooms need new paint, ceiling (tile?) work and new lockers. This would be only the first stage. The later stuff probably would be just a new locker facility etc.

  45. kama krab January 29, 2012 8:34 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Pride’s #12 was exactly what I was trying to say yesterday. With regards to Punahou, UH is only about 2 miles at the most from Punahou and still no representation. No Coaches on campus, no calls, no informational packets, nothing. Pretty shame when you can have a coach walk to two of the most productive programs in the state. Like Pride said above, this recruiting class is more about laying seeds down and seeing how the seed grows. Right now I can tell when a UH coach comes around Punahou or STL, it’s like, you still remember how to get here. But now with Norm Chow here, there’s more of a finally feeling going around. Trust me, Punahou and STL would love to send there best to UH but there just wasn’t enough effort coming from UH to warrant even a look. Like I said yesterday, things are going to change.

  46. kapakahi January 29, 2012 8:35 am

    ST,

First time heard about Dustin Adams de-commitment. BTW, what’s happening with San Mateo OL Fanaika?

  47. kapakahi January 29, 2012 8:38 am

    #45. kama,

So…what’s the latest happening between UH and Matthew Sparks?

  48. kama krab January 29, 2012 8:42 am

Kapakahi on yesterday’s post regarding Sparks,

I had thought all along that he would be coming to Hawaii but to tell you the truth, his recruitment has been pretty quiet compared to his other teammates. So I can’t really speak on his recruitment. From what I know is that most of his Hawaii recruitment came from last years big man camp but he never committed then, so I really don’t know. Right now my feeling is that he may not have very much options which is pretty sad for this young man because he has some good stuff going for him. Maybe a preferred walk-on status might be good for him.

    #48. kama,

That’s for the update. Kinda confirms what I’ve been hearing recently from a co-worker (who has ties to the Punahou coaching staff). I know that he was a regular attendee at last season’s UH home games.

A preferred walk-on status would be good for him….and UH. BTW, will be interesting to see how Norm Chow will be handling the walk-on program….and whether UH will still have open tryouts before Spring Ball.

too bad. coming to Hawaii could have been really life changing for you. I read your posts elsewhere. seen who your friends are, midwest.

so be it. good luck in life. i don’t see playing Northern Illinois anytime soon, so you’ll never really know what you missed out on. but i am certain you are going to read about us. and know you could have been one of the chosen ones.

probably yes, but we[‘ll never know. good or not too bad, Coach Chow would have made him great. He wasn’t coach Chow’s choice, he was Gordy’s choice. he was named POY north dakota. whatever his reason he might go NIU, because their oline coach used to coach with Gordy at Minn., never know and won’t care. that’s life.

    – SS Kamu Grugier (Kamehameha-Kapalama)

However this weekend turns out, JMHO that the real challenge for Norm Chow and the staff will be the next Class of 2013 to see how many of these top local prospects that they can convince to “stay home and make us proud”:

    – DE Kamalei Correa (Saint Louis)

    – DL Titus Failauga (Pac-5)

    – ILB Colton Goeas (Saint Louis)

    – OL Reeve Koehler (Saint Louis)

    – DT Scott Pagano (Moanalua)

    – DE Ualesi Sale (Aiea)

    – OLB Isaac Savaiinaea (Punahou)

    – WR/KR Jeremy Tabuyo (Saint Louis)

    – DT Kennedy Tulimasealii (Waianae)

    – OL John Wa’a (Kahuku)

    – RB Aofaga Wily (Kahuku)

While I’m like everyone else…..hoping for a few pleasant surprises to result from this weekend’s visits, my expectations aren’t that high for this Class of 2012 recruiting class since Norm and his staff have been recruiting for less than 1 month.

  91. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 12:13 pm

Pride said it best last night.

    Pride.:

    January 28th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

Go to Washington and represent the Huskies.

Go to UCLA and represent the Bruins.

Go to Colorado and represent the Buffs.

Go to Stanford and represent the Cardinal.

Go to Oregon and represent that Ducks.

Go to Arizona and represent the Wildcats.

Go ahead, good luck to you all.

    Pride.:

    January 28th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Stay in Hawaii and represent the University of Hawaii Warriors.

Represent the sudents of the Univeristy of Hawaii.

Represent the entire state of Hawaii.

Represent the Hawaiians as a race, all Hawaiians all across the world.

Represent the culture of Hawaii. the local cultue built on ‘ohana, aloha, sharing, and caring.

Represent the Polynesian people and their proud culture.

Represent your entire family who have watched you grow up, who have supported you in everything from pre-school, to little league to pop warner, high school, and now college.

Stay home and help to create “memories” for all who love you and for those that you love. Young neices and nephews who will grow up remembering how they played in the parking lot as their parents ate, tail-gated and celebrated Warrior wins together.

Stay home and be the conduit that brings long lost family members back together who haven’t seen each other in years, but now have a reason to fly to Honolulu to see their cousin, nephew, or grandson “bleed green” for the University of Hawaii football team.

You see young men. You can go to mainland, yes, you’ll enjoy your experience, you can get a good education, and you can grow from a boy to a man. But all of those things can also be done in Manoa. Yes, in Manoa you can play football. In Manoa you can get a good education. In Manoa you can grow from a boy into a man. But in Manoa, you will play for people who know you, love you, and need you. There is simply no comparison.

I at one time had to make the same decision that you are making today. I do not regret for one second choosing Manoa over Seattle, Phoenix, Boulder, Eugene, Povo, Corvalis, Colorado Springs, Annapolis, West Point, Lincoln, and South Bend. I truly believe you will not regret that decision either, if that is what you decide to do.

Good luck to all of you, no matter what you choose to do. Whatever you choose to do, just remember the reason that you are there is to get an education. That is, and always should be your top priority. Good luck and “make memories”.

    Pride,

you make me green wit pride.

  92. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 12:16 pm

  100. War-E-Or January 29, 2012 12:48 pm

What I meant is, i think we got the bulk of the “good” recruits already! No use waiting around, so lets pretend what got the best we could get 🙂

  101. War-E-Or January 29, 2012 12:48 pm

…i no like jinx anything 🙂

I’m good. They gave the S-A an air-conditioned booth with three TVs.

    I might move here.

  103. MattyBoy January 29, 2012 12:57 pm

    99

I have a HUGE feeling that not that much will happen this week. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t McMackin do pretty good his first year of recruiting with the short amount of time he had as HC? I do remember McMackin receiving more than two commitments from the top players in the state right?

  104. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 12:59 pm

I don’t think much will happen today.

If you’re going to de-commit from a Pac-12 school, it’s always best to have the chat with the folks.

  105. kama krab January 29, 2012 12:59 pm

Man some people are so impatient and because they are not willing to wait, there are willing to start thinking up dome and gloom scenarios. All I got to say is that we will get some and we will lose some. Just gotta wait and see. No sense beating yourself up over this.

From what I know, we will probably get Lakalaka. After that I really don’t know but I am willing to wait and see who else comes down the pipeline.

  106. maddog50 January 29, 2012 1:04 pm

!06….could not say it any better….all said and done it wil be good…no consolation….those that want—-do

  107. whitey January 29, 2012 1:07 pm

  109. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 1:18 pm

    kama krab

thank you for asking us all to be patient.

    I am. I swear I am.

i have been a negativist before, in action and deed.

    if I can, anybody can.

so suck it up Tsaiko! 👿

  110. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 1:18 pm

Oregon is kicking butt today in recruiting.

One of the commitments announced his decision at a news conference at his church.

  111. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 1:19 pm

    Whitey:

And all we’re wondering is: Who used this booth during the UH season?

  112. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 1:21 pm

    Another Hilo D1 prospect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ84SDVP4Sc

    Donavan Faoa Kelley, Freshman QB/ATH

    JV Highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ84SDVP4Sc

    Varsity Highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFwqfAILmLg

Runs a legit 4.70 40 and has great explosive athleticism. I think he projects similar to Pilares at this point, probably moving to SB or DB at the D1 level.

  116. kapakahi January 29, 2012 1:49 pm

    #104. MattyBoy,

You’re correct. Mack was able to sign quite a few top local high school players for his initial recruiting class. Paipai Falemalu & Alema Tachibana (Kahuku); Geordon Hanohano & Tuiatua Tuiasosopo (Saint Louis); Haku Correa & Christian Vasconcellos (from Damien); Ervin Sione (McKinley); and Art Laurel (Leilehua) all signed. But Tuiasosopo & Sione either quit the team or were dismissed, while Vasconcellos never became a Warrior.

Ironically the problem with Mack’s initial recruiting class was that there were too few (only 3) mainland high school signees….all DBs..all who never saw much (if any) playing time for Warriors….all who were not on the team roster this past season. Steve Christian (transferred), Steve Stepter (retired), Lewis Walker (transferred). Mack’s initial recruiting class was also too heavily loaded with 10 JC signees….most of whom (excluding Greg Alexander, Jeramy Bryant, and Jovonte Taylor) that also never saw much playing time.

  117. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 1:50 pm

you guys seen dat overhead camera in da Stadium????????

  118. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 2:01 pm

fand the first class was loaded with top local talent who wanted to help da home team, because of the overall feeling of lament that folloed the sudden departure of JJ, leaving us, meaning all Hawaii, to feel the sudden pang of da JJ jump ship following his beef with lolo Herm, and him making his point.

but i no like talk about dat. i like talk about Dr. Chow.

  119. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 2:04 pm

Coach Chow is one smart pake. he get a Ed.D. in educational psychology. The Ed.D. program in Educational Psychology provides professional preparation in applied educational psychology with an emphasis on learning disabilities and child development. The program is based on a balanced and sequential scientist model and emphasizes the interrelatedness of theory, research, and practice.

    whew…. dat wuz a mouthful!

but did you see da overhead cam at da stadium? maybe somebody can borrow em for our games. 😆

  120. Ipu Man January 29, 2012 2:09 pm

    Dr. Chow…Dr. Pepper…

  121. Manoa January 29, 2012 2:16 pm

    BigHilofan #113

    That might have been me.

Initial rumor was Uperesa would be Oline coach– all of that was rumor.

Then I heard Tsai say, it was a long way from happening just yet.

Then, someone I know close to the process told me Uperesa was no longer going to be the Oline coach and it would be someone else (so I assumed Uperesa was no longer coming)– which turned out to be only half true.

Wiesehan is the Oline coach and Uperesa was switched to RB coach.

  122. graham January 29, 2012 2:20 pm

I think coach Mac did a lot better job recuirting than people give him credit for. One thing that people bashed June Jones for not recuirting Hawaii hard enough. Now people are doing the same to Coach Mac

  123. Ipu Man January 29, 2012 2:22 pm

    Manoa,

anywayz, da point i wuz making is most of the time we guessing, speculating. which is alright when we go wrong and it turns out in our favor.

right now, i’m worried dat negativity will cause our guys to turn away, if they’re wavering.

and i’m hoping they wavering in our direction.

  135. azwarrior22 January 29, 2012 2:44 pm

These Pro Bowlers play like they don’t want to get hurt…might as well wear flags and play touch 🙂

  136. lime January 29, 2012 2:47 pm

    Any updates on the recruits?

  137. lava January 29, 2012 2:47 pm

Regardless of which recruits sign up, we can’t fairly grade Coach Chow on this year. He raided his Utah pipeline so get some bodies in here, but next year will be a true test. I think I am stating the obvious.

  138. cheepono January 29, 2012 2:48 pm

i’m guessing the official visits are done. salamo fiso is already back in cali.

    144. Big Hilo,

Wasnt he here a couple weeks ago for his visit? What I’m wondering is if we have a chance at landing him? That to me would be a huge get!

I have to focus on the Pro Bowl now.

  153. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 4:04 pm

Hey, I just realized UH recruited “Jerry” Garcia.

  154. Warrior Dave January 29, 2012 4:08 pm

    Keep those commits coming baby!!!!

  155. hillmok January 29, 2012 4:10 pm

Hell to the mutha @#$% yeah! Dejon was a good catch not sure who the other cat is?

  156. jeezy33 January 29, 2012 4:15 pm

All State 3-4 OLB being compared to Van Noy from BYU… Huge upside…. maybe our next Travis Laboy type rusher

  157. hillmok January 29, 2012 4:17 pm

#112-ST Uncle Phil’s wishes of owning a pro-football team, he’s living vicariously through UO. All that money he spends on Oregon they have no excuse not to land 5 stars, without him they would probably not be the favorite team in Oregon. Go Beaves!

  158. Shadow January 29, 2012 4:36 pm

Dejon Allen is a big time pick! Congrats to Dejon & the coaching staff. Jeff Coprich is said to be deciding between UH & Cal. With Lakalaka & Taliuli (& Brostek) seriously looking at Manoa, things are really looking up for the 2012 haul. This could end up being one of the best recruiting efforts ever at UH.

  159. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 4:53 pm

holy moley. Jerol Garcia-Allen is a great get too. let us change his name. “Jerry” Garcia. like dat. i like dat alot1

  160. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 4:57 pm

okay Lord. time to work your magic on bradda Shadow.

please tell me how come he knowz so much? 😀

  161. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 4:58 pm

    ST

now dat da $25K is kicking in, da game starting to look a little better. 😀

  162. tom mui January 29, 2012 5:13 pm

According to the Nevada Prep Report, Garcia-Williams is a 3*** player and his stats are: Ht:6’3″

    Wt:200 lbs

    40:4.72 secs

    Bench Reps:17

    Shuttle:4.63

    Vertical:34 inches

    GPA:2.9

    ACT:19

    Class:2012 (High School)

I don’t know what 19 in ACT translates into – hopefully that and the GPA is sufficient for admission to UH.

I let WAFAN figure out the ACT score and what it might be as a SAT score.

  163. my spirit animal January 29, 2012 5:14 pm

Another thing I’ve really noticed is always that for many people, a bad credit score is the result of circumstances over and above their control. By way of example they may have already been saddled by having an illness and as a consequence they have substantial bills for collections. Maybe it’s due to a occupation loss or inability to work. Sometimes breakup can send the funds in the undesired direction. Thanks for sharing your notions on this weblog.

  164. Shoko January 29, 2012 5:17 pm

Why is Cam Newton even in the Pro Bowl? He’s terrible.

  165. ai-eee-soos January 29, 2012 5:24 pm

Yes, I agree – great recruits.

Dejon Allen, a lineman from Dominguez (Calif.) High, and Jerrol Garcia-Williams, a linebacker from Palo Verde High in Las Vegas, have made oral commitments to the Warriors.

  166. Isabella January 29, 2012 5:38 pm

In your opinion, do you think this would be great for a room update?

  167. Scott Normann January 29, 2012 5:42 pm

Nice read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing some research on that. And he just bought me lunch as I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch!

  168. 5linx January 29, 2012 5:48 pm

    Excellent information, thanks for sharing.

  169. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 5:49 pm

    thanks Tom Mui.

  170. d1shima January 29, 2012 5:57 pm

Incredible insights. Thanks so much. I will be telling all my friends about this.

  171. d1shima January 29, 2012 5:58 pm

    😆

  172. d1shima January 29, 2012 5:59 pm

Welcome to the newest Warriors, Dejon Allen and Jerrol Garcia-Williams!

  173. TYaiea January 29, 2012 6:00 pm

Agree Shoko, the bugguh wen lose the game for the NFC plus they kept him in for a long time. auwe…

  174. jkjones January 29, 2012 6:00 pm

Dejon is so versatile and quick off the ball. He would make an awesome OG. he can get ahead of the runner in the open field and has excellent balance downfield. he can play D too. An athlete with a big body and blue-collar disposition. Jerrol has huge upsides and can easily add 25 lbs in a hurry. If he blossoms, he could be special. Additionally, I was hoping we could score either nick januska or salamo fiso at LB to give this class 3 great picks at that position (fonua, garcia-williams and either januska or fiso).

  175. TYaiea January 29, 2012 6:01 pm

wow! all these great news about the oral committs. Hope they follow thru on Wednesday, got my fingers crossed…IMUA…

  176. Jack Flash January 29, 2012 6:03 pm

    Aloha Tsaikos!

I’ve been thinking about that song they play at the Stadium prior to kickoffs for our home games- kinda slow/reggae feel to it. And I was thinking, wouldn’t “Welcome To The Jungle” by GNR be great? Well what did we hear at the Pro Bowl today? That’s right- WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE! Can someone help relay this suggestion to the stadium sound folks please?

  177. Jack Flash January 29, 2012 6:06 pm

    One more thing…

There’s only 3 times that standing at the Football game is MANDATORY:

    1. Star Spangled Banner/Hawaii Pono’i

    2. Kickoffs

    3. 3rd downs when the Warriors are on defense

Other than that, sit and enjoy if you like.

    Mahalo!

  178. TYaiea January 29, 2012 6:10 pm

180…also when those in your front row stand and u can’t see…gotta stand up too…

  179. al January 29, 2012 6:28 pm

i wonder how the braintrust will utilize dejon “mustard” allen’s athleticism?

  180. al January 29, 2012 6:30 pm

jerrol garcia-williams, got to think about this one. hard to add another name for one so long.

st’s and bhf2’s simplicity with “jerry” is good for now. i could envision the crowd chanting “jerry, jerry, jerry….” everytime he makes a play.

  181. al January 29, 2012 6:30 pm

i can’t wait for steven “boom” lakalaka to sign up for the home team.

everytime he rips a long one or smash mouths a first down or touchdown the crowd will be cheering aloud in unison.

    “boooooooooooooommmmmmm!”

(btw, remember that old sly and the family stone song that had the verse, “boom, lakalakalaka…”)

i wonder when the birdies will release more names?

    tonight?

    tomorrow morning?

    kitv4 6pm news tomw?

its like the heinz ketchup commercial….anticipation.

    ah yes,

after all these are exciting times!!!!!!!!!!!

  184. jkjones January 29, 2012 6:47 pm

the choice with dejon is clear–we need to place more talented athletes on OL. we are transiting to a disciplined run game, we need blockers that can scoot to the outside without tripping on their shoe laces and can zero in on LBs and DBs like a tow missle. you need to run with balance. defenses have good athletes on the line and ergo, we need to upgrade our OL athleticism to counter.

  185. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 6:53 pm

    Sly you bugga you.

baby baby baby… I wanna take you higher….

baby baby baby light my fiiiire,

    boom lakalaka boom lakalaka….

    boom lakalaka boom lakalaka

I’m hoping he commits. we could have fun cheering brudda on.

  186. tom mui January 29, 2012 6:55 pm

    @186 AL

So Al, when are YOU going to release more names?

  187. PONO January 29, 2012 7:11 pm

Dejon is a HUGE get. I think people will realize how good he is once he puts on the pads. OL do the dirty work and its not a sexy position that gets all the hype but he is an outstanding get by the staff and should get early playing time.

  188. MattyBoy January 29, 2012 7:22 pm

    Al,

You think we have a chance at Brostek or Fiso?

  189. MattyBoy January 29, 2012 7:26 pm

And would anyone know by any chance if J.T. Turner is still committed to Hawaii?

  190. jeezy33 January 29, 2012 7:26 pm

    Loooong Day!

    Great news, more excellent recruits!

Chow has a vision. Others see his vision. Fans. Boosters. Recruits.

It all starts with the vision. We see, we believe.

Braddah Pride – masterful! Said as well as it can be said. Thanks. I hope the recruits read your stuff and take it to heart, because it comes from the heart. Awesome.

Don’t forget, recruits, Pride was one of those who made the choice to stay home and play for Hawai’i. In big big way. He talks the talk because he’s walked the walk.

    Nuff said.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

from tanksah (the resident kahuku connection)

    TAKE THIS TO THE BANK:

Allen, Garcia-Williams, Lakalaka, and Taiulu, and Fonua all committed together! Benny did a good job helping with Lakalaka.

Brostek still undecided. And Fiso had a great visit and became good friends with Lakalaka and Benny but gotta convince his Mom.

Great news thus far Warrior fans!

    Tanks Ah!

  207. al January 29, 2012 8:39 pm

a lot of these fine young men have to have their parents approval.

it is written in the contract. both parents must sign off on the loi.

we all know that the person to convince first is the mother. we all know that the mother/wife is the boss.

the birdies are waiting on the sidelines with their scoreboards.

patience its gonna be an eye popping time.

  208. Bryson January 29, 2012 8:46 pm

  214. kapakahi January 29, 2012 8:59 pm

Mom would still probably have to fly to see her son play home games anyway.

  215. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 9:26 pm

Yep, Lakalaka and Taliulu said they are Warriors.

  216. Manoa January 29, 2012 9:37 pm

Outstanding job by Norm and crew.

Lakalaka and Taliulu are great additions and they turned down real Pac 12 offers.

  217. Warriorbacker January 29, 2012 9:38 pm

Now just need Fiso and Januska and hopefully a few other surprises 🙂

  218. kev-1 January 29, 2012 9:39 pm

Was just thinking about this today when I was watching the pro-bowl . . .

Coach Chow runs a more pro-style offense, especially with the use of the tight end. Gone are the days that tight ends were primarily extra blockers. They now almost always need to be considered by defenses as a pass option, given the recent success of so many TE’s in the league. The commentators were talking a bit about how the use of TEs is considered the “new pro offense.”

Anyway, you all know that . . . my point is simply that maybe more top recruits would consider staying home with the possibility of more kids making it to the pros out of a pro-style offense. Ever since JJ came, Hawaii was considered a gimmick offense (no disrespect, because it was JJ that took thrust this program into the spot light), and I don’t think the team was ever given a proper look once the draft rolled around. We were often left wondering why so and so never got a shot in the pros. I think a lot has to do with them being from UH.

Now UH has a name of a head coach, albeit is first HC gig, but still a HUGE, respected name in college football. That, together with getting out of the WAC and running an offensive system that pro-teams will consider with a bit more credibility than the RNS might have the kids giving more serious consideration to UH.

  219. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 9:40 pm

Garcia-Williams is an interesting recruit. He’s originally from Ohio, so he’s part of the Ohio pipeline that Tony Tuioti started.

  220. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 9:41 pm

Let’s go back to today’s original question about the quality of this class.

  221. Uhwarbow January 29, 2012 9:43 pm

I like it. The new tradition.

  222. jkjones January 29, 2012 9:43 pm

salamo fiso is an uncanny hunter who stays crouched in pursuit as he strikes to attack. salamo stays low like a pile-driving FB. he lines up his prey in a nanosec and attacks in a straightline. quickly, suddenly and with deadly outcome. hope we get him.

  223. PIAA DS January 29, 2012 9:44 pm

Good, now I can cross of those Pac 12 names and circle the Hawaii on their RSVP’s , print the programs and announce the Warriors on Wednesday morning! Hope some of you come to the event. Got a soccer girl signing with UH as well.

  224. Ralph January 29, 2012 9:45 pm

option number 2, mainland pledged recruit deciding to stay at home.

  225. PowderPuff January 29, 2012 9:46 pm

WOW!!!! How exciting! Nice digs for you today, ST….and thanks for the great info, too.

  226. jm2375 January 29, 2012 9:46 pm

Welcome to the new Warriors! Thanks to the local boys for staying home and welcome the Mainland boys to Hawaii.

  227. whitey January 29, 2012 9:50 pm

congratulations to coach chow and his staff for doing a very good job on recruiting. now we wait til feb 1st. go warriors.

  228. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 9:50 pm

    Doris:

You know I love you, but does it have to be so early?

  229. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 9:52 pm

    PowderPuff:

It was funny at the end. First, they cut the WiFi. Then they carried away the TVs. Then they cut the A/C. Then it started smelling pretty funky.

  230. chawan_cut January 29, 2012 9:52 pm

    wow

  231. jm2375 January 29, 2012 9:54 pm

    ST – #232 – 😆

  232. kev-1 January 29, 2012 9:56 pm

random thought about the pro-bowl today . . . looked like some of the vets wanted to send Cam Newton a little message. They weren’t playing like that agains Rodgers and Brees. Even sacked the kid a couple times. He was smiling in the beginning, but after awhile, he looked pretty pissed. Wonder if they are just trying to keep the kid grounded.

  233. jkjones January 29, 2012 9:58 pm

the proof is in the puddin’. if we score 5 of the top 10 athletes in hawaii (fonua, sai, lakalaka, taliulu and brostek), it is a quintessential coup. end of discussion for locals.

we get fiso and the big one from san mateo, in addition to all those named, yup, this would be one the top classes ever recruited from both sides of the pond.

what i like about it–no gray shirts or kids going on missions and they all look like qualifiers. Chow doesnt strike me as the type of coach that puts up names on the message boards just to get pub, knowing they wont qualify–JJ and MAC did it every year.

  234. Derek January 29, 2012 9:59 pm

I think it’s a very good class so far. A “B” grade. Get Shane make it “A-“. Plus, get a DT and it’s an “A”. Plus, get a playmaker RB or ATH make it “A+”. You can find a kicker as a preferred walk-on.

  235. ai-eee-soos January 29, 2012 9:59 pm

    Welcome, aboard …

    Steven Lakalaka and Taylor Taliuli.

  236. PowderPuff January 29, 2012 10:02 pm

HAHA! Back to normal…one of the NFL guys staying at the hotel called Aloha Stadium “UPS:” what can brown do for you. But good thing they had the WiFi because 3G/4G were NOT cutting it this afternoon at Aloha Stadium. It was awful.

  237. Kevin January 29, 2012 10:03 pm

I don’t read subliminal messages well. Does that mean they’re coming to UH? Or is there a subliminal message inside the subliminal message that states it is not a subliminal message?

  238. Duh??? January 29, 2012 10:04 pm

    WOW… These are exciting times.

  239. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 10:05 pm

    BigHilo:

When the circus leaves town, they don’t care who’s still sweeping the elephant kaka.

Then one of the guards wouldn’t let reporters into the AFC locker. We pointed out that the NFC locker was open. Then the guard said we had to clear a path. We said: Why do we have to clear a path if nobody is allowed to enter?

Anyway, we have to be nice since we’ll probably see him at the next carnival: “That will be 5 scrips, sir.”

  255. oldtimer808 January 29, 2012 10:24 pm

Outstanding news for the future of Warrior Football, the fans and the State.

  256. jeezy33 January 29, 2012 10:24 pm

Just MY opinion but Garcia Williams might be the best pro prospect projecting the future out of our class….

He really looks the part of a long 3-4 OLB. If he can put on the needed weight and muscle, watch out. Has the genes and already has a 1st team All State and League POY to show for. So it’s not as if he is a total project like Desmond Dean was coming in..

That will be my bold statement of the class though.

  257. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 10:26 pm

    ok. 99, 104.

eat your ice scream and enjoy da ride. 😆

As excited as everyone is, gotta be cautious of more PAC 12 schools trying to poach last minute.

I expect some teams to try fill out classes on tuesday night and new teams could come in hot for guys like Dejon Allen, Garcia Williams, Koloamatangi, and other..

  270. Bryson January 29, 2012 10:48 pm

Jeezy isn’t it a dead period right now until Wedenesday? I remember reading that somewhere…

  271. jkjones January 29, 2012 10:48 pm

    Taylor Taliulu

  272. Bryson January 29, 2012 10:50 pm

  275. Stephen Tsai January 29, 2012 10:52 pm

Reminds me of those silent auctions.

UH submitted bids just before the auctioneer yelled: “Time’s up.”

  276. MauiwarriorEassie January 29, 2012 10:54 pm

Norm has made me believe, doubted him with his age, but he has proved to me with assembling his staff and recruiting in such a short amount of time that he is prepared, no more stupid mistakes, imua warriors……on board norm, can’t wait for smart football

  277. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 10:55 pm

dead period? wat? we gotta play fair? and you think da PAC-12 teams are playing fair? WTF… day got Mike Leach coaching a PAC 12 team. and SARK too. warning. don’t turn your backs on any of em. its not about the kids, or their state. or their watevaz. its about them having to earn their $$$. and cheating is part of the game. Cam Newton Auburn? Da USC brudda wit da cars?

give me a break. dead period my a$$. don’t turn your back on da poachaz, coach.

  278. Mauiwarrior January 29, 2012 10:57 pm

    Will lakalaka stay at RB?

  279. jeezy33 January 29, 2012 10:57 pm

275.. I wasn’t sure how that worked… I still remember how Oregon got Keliikipi.. So I don’t know what the actual rules are. Phone calls permitted?

  280. jeezy33 January 29, 2012 10:58 pm

    280. Always have to look out for Sark. He has to be the most hated man on Cal Berkley campus. I think Cal doesn’t offer Coprich or Bruce had they didn’t lose so many decommits

  281. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 10:59 pm

    okay then my brethren. 😀

I’m gonna have a really great sleep tonight, knowing all will be well in Hawaii nei.

welcome recruits of 2012. welcome welcome welcome. thanks for playing for the home team. in the past, that was a phrase. when i see our new Coach and his team, I am sooo excited!!! really!!!

  282. jkjones January 29, 2012 11:02 pm

look, there are so many “eyes” going for Hawaii now, if the huns cheat, we will know it in a coconut-wireless second. HUNS beware, the eyes of hawaii are upon you.

  283. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 11:05 pm

The one team I’m gonna make the effort to go watch is the Washington game. I do not like their coach. I know the game will mean alot to Caoch Chow too. I’ll especially like it because he will play it down. But inside, I know. He still wants to prove his awesome coaching talents. thats the vibe I get from the great Coach Chow. steady. always steady. and a killer on the field.! yup, i believe.

  284. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 11:10 pm

yup, dare are great battles ahead. and recruiting wars are a part of the battle.

    Go Coach.

  285. BigHiloFan2 January 29, 2012 11:11 pm

ST, can u somehow get the word to Norm Chow about Jeffrey Coprich cousin Marshaun? Wow this guys video is great. 2200 rushing yards and MVP of all star game. Talk about quickness with break away speed.

Very cool news on the 4 recruits today. Good job, coaches! Welcome, newbies!

    Night all!

jeezy that m.c. highlight is awesome. makes u wonder if he is that good or is the defense that terrible. but to be mvp of an all star game, he gotta be really good

I think a little of both…. But you cant ignore the moves and speed. With the Big O linemen we bringing in, it might good to have a small RB to hide behind and explode through the holes… Looks like a solid Kick Returner at very least.

Lakalaka the thunder, and we need some lightning behind Gregory.

what’s impressive is his numbers his jr and sr year. scoring/rushing rank in california his jr year is around 570 and rank 200 his sr year. rank #3 in league as jr and #1 as sr. tells me he is gonna improve as he gets older and better coaching.

Lakalaka, Taliulu, Sai and Fonua. The ’12 local class is not a total loss after all. Any word yet on Brostek?

re: Pride…ur blog is da best!! wow! Lakalaka and Taliuli verbally committed to UH. Can’t believe it!! For all you Miano supporters…would this have happened if Miano was appointed HC. I think not….look at what Chow and staff have done in going after the local recruits….wait till next yr. when they will have more time to plan and actually do some real recruiting….look what they did in an abbreviated period..I mean, we might not get the Brosteks etc…but just to have them come in for a visit, is an accomplishment…word is out that Chow et. co will go after the local recruits en force….now if the coaching staff can only assemble and work all these recruits into a viable team, we might have something in couple yrs……this coming fb season will be a learning curve in getting acclimated to a new system and staff but i can see this team really producing the following season etc…i am wholly impressed with what Chow et. co has done…just the fact that Lakalaka and Taliuli decommitted to Pac-12 teams to commit to UH is a BIG COUP in the recruiting war…..JOB WELL DONE!!!

Starting a content kind of like this one forced me to do some research and I found your post to be quite helpful. My page is centered around the idea of knowledge, fun and sharing. I wish you respectable luck with your site in the future and you can be sure I’ll be following it.

In the future when Lakalaka makes a good run with the ball, maybe the band can do the Tina Turner version of “I want to take you higher” and really emphasize the “Boom Shaka Lakalaka.. Boom Shaka la!” Just hit that falling musical rift …and let everyone scream it out… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-brXwxSR47E

Remember to you should not chuckle at me expressing this, but your submit actually jogs my memory on the quotation… “Talk to a man about himself and he will listen for hours.”
