It ain’t over ’til it’s over

The Warriors are preparing for the home stretch in recruiting with about 15 visits planned for this coming weekend.

The guest list reportedly includes Shane Brostek of Hawaii Prep, Psalm Wooching of Kealakehe, Steven Lakalaka of Punahou, and Keoni Bush-Loo of Kamehameha.

Feb. 1 is the first day recruits may sign binding national letters of intent.

Give credit to the Warriors. They’re not afraid to ask.

Yes, that is quarterback Justin Alo on the Manoa campus.

Last February, Alo signed a scholarship agreement in which he would grayshirt. But it appeared Alo did not project to be eligible this year. Instead, Alo met the qualifications to enroll as a full-time UH student this semester. UH is honoring his scholarship offer.

Here’s a reminder: Justin Alo highlights.

The UH quarterbacks are David Graves, Cayman Shutter, Kevin Spain, Jeremy Higgins, Ikaika Woolsey, Taylor Graham and Alo. Graham, who transferred from the Ohio State, must sit out the 2012 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. Quarterback John Ursua of Utah’s Cedar High made an oral commitment to UH last week. Ursua also is being considered as a slotback.

Graves will enter spring training as the No. 1 quarterback.

The volleyball Warriors are hopeful outside hitter Gus Tuaniga will be activated for Friday’s match against Grand Canyon. Tuaniga is awaiting paperwork from Long Beach. In practices, he has been one of the Warriors’ top servers.

    Morning, everyone!

    Happy New Year!

The QB’s I knew growing up were all super athletes. Hope we can make use of the athleticism of those who end up not slated to compete or fit in as a QB in our new offense.

  17. Garret January 23, 2012 4:36 am

It doesn’t hurt to ask and I am glad that UH is bringing in so many recruits on the last recruiting weekend. There was no way for this coaching staff to get the first visit for many top-tier recruits, so getting the last visit is probably the best timing they could hope for. I hope that the coaches can close the deal on a lot of the recruits visiting this weekend.

  18. Garret January 23, 2012 4:41 am

It is good to have confirmation on Justin Alo. It will be interesting to see which QBs pick up Coach Chow’s offense the quickest.

  19. Kekoa January 23, 2012 4:51 am

Thanks for the warning Papa Joe. (I warned the neighbors too). Can’t be too careful.

Whew! Catching up on all the recruiting news. Spring training will be an INTENSE battle for every position. It’ll be worth the time and parking fee to watch practice sessions for sure.

Awaiting more good news regarding future players wanting to represent the Warrior football club. It’s already sounding like a very select group of young men ready to become part of an exclusive fraternity of Chow Hounds!

  20. hillmok January 23, 2012 5:13 am

The community (Football) should show up on campus showing these athletes love, and hopefully make it little harder for the “local” boys to say “no”. Imagine a bunch of Hawaii fans on campus forming a line as cheering as these guys go up to the football office. Anyone up for it?

  21. Bugaz January 23, 2012 5:28 am

Good Monday morning all! 15 visitors with 4 stated top local boys and it’s the home stretch. Very exciting times and I wish the coaching staff the best of luck with getting commitments to fill their needs to implement the new system.

i don’t remember reading anything on kiha sai taking an official to UH either.

it’d be good if the local recruits that are “committed” to the mainland schools visit UH the same time as when guys like kiha sai and bj fonua are visiting. hopefully the local boys committed to UH can sway their friends.

it’ll be telling where that pecking order ends up.

perhaps the top dog, taylor graham, is the one that won’t count but he could be the standard by which all qb’s will be measured in the future.

definitely a candidate for the holy grail.

ah but, wait till next year.

  90. tom mui January 23, 2012 10:13 am

    koakane #63

    you hakka or punti

Long-winded explanation. Answer: really technically neither.

Punti – “locals” or the people that populated Southern China and Guangzhou province in particular (Guangdong or Canton). The Hakka were mainly Central Chinese that drifted southward into the Guangzhou area (think Hatfields and the McCoys; Capulet and Montesque).

But in Guangzhou area were the Seeyup (Szeup) which had a dialect all its own and while “local” in the area were somewhat different.

So when people say that I’m somewhat different, I’m not quite sure what they mean.

  91. Pauoa Boy January 23, 2012 10:14 am

The thing about recruiting is making yourself known to the potential prospect. Selling yourself and your product. If you too panty to make an effort to talk to someone, then guess what, lose money on you because you may have been lucky enough to land that recruit. Too many times I seen a potential recruit who may have wanted to go to UH never get any attention, then when another school comes in and gives the love…sayonara! Same with one hot chick at the club…you know you been spocking her all night and you like dance with her, but most times what happens, you too panty to ask or you wait too long, then next thing you know she with somebody else and you on the wall with your drink looking like one loser. Then you end up settling for the girl you no really like. Same with recruiting if you not going after the top prospects and settling for what you can get then what’s the point of trying to move the program forward? Go get um, make the effort, talk the talk, you never know what may happen but what’s the worst they going say…NO???…if that’s the case on to the next…

  92. al January 23, 2012 10:16 am

86…thats what i was trying to tell koakane, that italian food (with pasta) has origins from china who created the noodle.

first noodle on record was dated 4000 years ago on the shores of the yellow river.

  97. kev-1 January 23, 2012 10:28 am

Chip Kelly staying at Oregon isn’t about unfinished business, or the fact that his heart is in Oregon. It is because they couldn’t reach a deal. You don’t enter “serious contract negotiations” with another team for another job if you “heart” is where you currently are. I don’t know why people are so afraid to say “yeah I wanted that job, but we couldn’t work out a deal.” Just like when ASU yanked the offer away from JJ. He then responds by saying he is where he wants to be. Really? Than why did you look for another job in the first place. It is great to have options, and nothing wrong with looking into them. But why the smokescreen and the lies after everything goes sour?

SDSU’s football players were supposed to show up at 6am today to begin offseason conditioning workouts under the supervision of SDSU’s new strength coach. However, their football strength coach just quit and apparently is going to work for Fresno State instead.

If SDSU doesn’t have a good offseason workout program since it was disrupted by having 4 strength coaches in a little over a year, then that might show up in the 4th quarter when UH plays them in San Diego.

Joey Boese, San Diego State’s new football strength coach, has abruptly quit the job just as players were to begin offseason workouts Monday morning under his direction.

No reason was immediately given for the move, but it is believed he left to soon take a similar job at Fresno State, where he knows the new head coach, Tim DeRuyter.

Boese, 31, was named as SDSU’s new football strength coach less than two weeks ago. He was to replace Rick Court, who left for Ohio State.

What kind of experience does Chip Kelly have in the NFL? I don’t see any. Three years head coaching in college? Now ready to be an NFL coach? These NFL team owners are nuts. Kelly is a very good college coach, but the NFL is big boy football. He’s never experienced big boy football before. It isn’t the same.

Chip Kelly – No NFL experience.

Jim Harbaugh – 15 years as an NFL QB. Two years as an NFL assistant coach.

NFL owners are looking at Chip Kelly, hoping that he’ll be able to do what Jim Harbaugh did this season.

Recalled the video of Harbaugh after yesterday’s game.

    – Protect the ball

    – End every possession with a kick.

  138. Bowwar January 23, 2012 1:09 pm

Yeah, today’s paper talks about the amount of money lost this season by the football program but I fail to see JD “man-up” and take some responsibility for it (example poor scheduling & marketing). I think there is only so much you can blame on MACK and his staff, as alot of their situation, occurred outside of the boundaries of the football field. Didn’t they anticipate the loss in revenue due to the loss of WAC funds?

The other thing I don’t see from JD is what he’s going to do to improve attendance at football games this coming year…Bringing in Chow will only be a temporary fix, as we are not projected to have a “winning” season due to the transition and MWC schedule. Hawaii people are “front-runners”, so as soon as we start losing, Chow won’t be having too much fun before the wolves come out…He’s going to be like MACK, left out to be a target, while JD hides behind the Chancellor’s skirt.

Come-on JD…Step up to the plate or get out of the game!

  139. Ipu Man January 23, 2012 1:29 pm

Bowwow, how would you improve attendance?

  140. A.M. January 23, 2012 1:40 pm

JD can start by taking immediate, concrete action to upgrade the FB locker room. It’s not rocket science to improve the locker room. Do all the high maka maka dance that he gets paid to do & secure funds. Get an architect & contractor and get it going.

Suggest JD take a lesson from the football staff & “outwork” the other UH staffers to make positive changes happen today (and not tomorrow).

  141. maddog50 January 23, 2012 1:43 pm

  153. jm2375 January 23, 2012 3:12 pm

Even if the upgrades are funded by donations, the design and bids are still state processes which can take years. Case in point – Ching Complex.

  154. Haleakala January 23, 2012 3:25 pm

To get the funds starts with lobbying the legislature. JD needs to get some sponsors from the House and the Senate. The Gov said that he will be on board for the locker room improvements. We can help by writing letters of support for a bill. However a bill needs to be introduced. The leg just opened so the lobbying effort needs to start NOW.

  155. Shadow January 23, 2012 3:32 pm

That’s all we ever hear – cannot do locker room upgrade because bidding take years, cannot do this because of that, and on and on and on. Yet, UH found a way to hire a new HC quickly. If there’s a will, there’s a way. If there’s strong & creative leadership, obstacles can be overcome. If other pubic universities can do it, why can’t we?

  156. Buffoman January 23, 2012 3:44 pm

I believe #151 is correct. It has to be completely done with private, designated, restricted dollars that the UH would accept on those terms.

Huskies visiting Mr. Brostek? Well, looks like we’re in the game.

  158. Bowwar January 23, 2012 3:48 pm

#139: Gotta be practical…People cannot afford the ticket prices so you either have to lower it (stratify the stadium) to get more people in the seats. Also, do more promos to attract fans to the game…How about a free parking day? Or a pre-game concert by a celebrity group before the game?

They gotta think “out of the box” and try to attract fans in a “down economy”.

  159. Bowwar January 23, 2012 3:51 pm

#140…Amen…I’m with you on that…Gotta have staff people who “out hustle” others…Complacency may have been the “evil fruit” that eventually killed Mack and his staff. You gotta be “hungry” if you want to succeed. Obviously, looking at JD, he don’t look too hungry. ;-0

  160. Bugaz January 23, 2012 3:51 pm

Come Brostek stay home and be a Warrior!!! Be a part of the Chow Dynasty that takes down the PAC 12

  161. Bowwar January 23, 2012 3:56 pm

Funny thing about the UH and State system…When private funds are available, we give them a “hard time” and soon enough, the private funds go away. I think they’re dragging their feet on the Ching Foundation due to our bureaucratic system. I’ve heard that some companies have offered their time and labor “for free” to fix UH stuff, but were rebuffed to “bidding requirements” and other red-tape. Yes, the governor can help by eliminating some of the red-tape so the UH can be more responsive to donors.

Look how fast Gib Arnold got both Hui’s involved in backing the BasketBows trip to China. JD was never involved in that. Shadow – #195 – you may be comparing apples and oranges. Miami is a PRIVATE school, and therefore, not subject to state procurement procedures, etc. With all the money the ACC gets from their tv contract, BC$ and NCAA bb tournaments, you wouldn’t think they would need to fundraise for the athletic facilities.

  208. FactCheck January 23, 2012 7:45 pm

205: The Oregon Ducks football complex is located north of the main campus. The complex includes Autzen Stadium where the games are played, the Len Casanova Center where the locker rooms and training facilities are located, the indoor practice field called the Moshofsky Center, and the outdoor training field named Kilkenny Field. Much of the cost of the state-of-the-art facilities were paid for by the prominent university boosters Phil Knight, Ed Moshofsky, and Patrick Kilkenny

BOWWAR #158 One of the fixed costs using Aloha Stadium is $90,000. Then we do pay teams to play at the Stadium.

  213. jm2375 January 23, 2012 8:19 pm

Does the ILH pay rent at Aloha Stadium? IIRC, the public high schools don’t. Waaay back when I was in high school, almost all the ILH boys varsity basketball games were at Blaisdell. Now the games are at “home” gyms (UHS’s is Klum Gym). Did the City start charging the high schools or was that always the case?

  215. kev-1 January 23, 2012 8:47 pm

al 178 . . . you just made me spit my coffee all over the computer screen. Thanks for the laugh – and for a computer that now smells like coffee.

  216. hillmok January 23, 2012 8:47 pm

I think we can all see that it takes a serious commitment and loooots of money to compete in today’s college football environment either you invest or get left behind. I think the challenge is getting our apathetic fans to see what we all see, so they can come out and support our university and give this state something to be proud of! If norm can’t turn it into a profitable system who can at what we’re willing to pay them?

  217. madeinhawaii January 23, 2012 8:56 pm

Next season will be a more austere one at UH as it has to pay for the transportation costs of the visiting teams. … Can’t blame the Coach for that expense.

  218. al January 23, 2012 9:17 pm

190…bhf2, those two are not 100% accurate. pending perhaps but not solid.

that website, btw, is not an offical site for the hawaii recruit status’.

  219. al January 23, 2012 9:18 pm

kev-1…i am glad that someone recognized my humor. another person didn’t.

  220. al January 23, 2012 9:25 pm

we should have no problem achieving a minimum of 20 % increase in attendance.

    simple mathematics.

anyone who is not a season ticket holder just needs to attend one more game than you did last year.

make no excuses, find a way, beg the wife, what ever it takes.

if you expect the team to put out then so should you.

    ..nuff said

  221. whitey January 23, 2012 9:27 pm

did uw make a mistake in their recruiting?????

    Go Warriors!

  262. dcwarrior January 24, 2012 6:29 am

I understand that there was little or nothing about UH athletics in Abercrombie’s State of the State speech? Whether or not that is true, I suggest that tsaikos who are voters NOT take the “wait and see” approach.

Every Hawaii voter on this board should write a comment to the Governor here: http://hawaii.gov/gov/contact/contact-gov

Let his staff know that you paid attention to what the Gov said earlier about supporting UH athletics and that you are holding him to it. Let him (and his staff) know that you support UH athletics and expect his administration to do the same.

Otherwise his staff will continue to ignore. And who puts together the Gov’s budgets and agendas? The staff.

The Gov is like any other boss, you need to get both him and the staff together on what you want.

If you don’t send a comment, don’t monku later if the Gov “forgets” about UH athletics.

    [stepping off soapbox]
