Sweet opportunity for Rolo

It was in December 1999, shortly after making a verbal commitment to play for UH, that Nick Rolovich learned the Warriors had secured a pledge from quarterback Jared Flint. There was a window for Rolovich to change his mind. Instead, he welcomed the challenge to compete for the starter’s job.

Rolovich started the first two games of the 2000 season, but admittedly struggled. After ceding the job to true freshman Tim Chang, Rolovich refused to pout. He kept working and, the next year, after Chang was injured, Rolovich finished the season with the best eight-game stretch of any UH quarterback.

That relentlessness and defiance will serve well as Rolovich prepares to become UMass’ offensive coordinator.

To be sure, it was difficult to see Rolovich depart after four years as a UH coach, the final two as offensive coordinator. He was Norm Chow’s final “cut.”

In the long run, starting anew will be helpful to Rolovich’s career. Rolovich works hard and is creative. At UH, he was well-liked — and respected — by players and coaches. But Rolovich was handed the keys to the UH offense in a clunky exchange when Ron Lee was relieved of primary play-calling duties early in the 2009 season. After Rolovich was promoted to offensive coordinator, UH hired Mouse Davis, the architect of this version of the run-and-shoot offense.

At UMass, which begins competition in the MAC, Rolovich gets to build an offense without being under the shadow of mentors or advisers. A fresh start will be a good thing for Rolovich. It was for Chow, who had left BYU after years as offensive coordinator.

Best wishes to Rolo and his family. And dress warmly.

The aloha-shirt stamps are a nice touch. But imagine if it could have been worked out to have an H-logo stamp?

  8. longdistance808 January 20, 2012 7:39 am

Congrats to Rolo. Somehow, I don’t think it’s the last we’ll see of him in his coaching career in respect to the Warriors.

  9. kev-1 January 20, 2012 7:40 am

Excited to see what Rolo accomplishes at UMass.

Curious . . . has Coach Chow ever commented on his thoughts on Rolovich and maybe why he didn’t keep him? I know he wanted his guys and all of that. I’m assuming he evaluated at least the possibility of bringing him back, given he was the final coach let go. I’d be interested in hearing his perspective.

  10. WarriorNY January 20, 2012 7:41 am

    Good Luck Rolo,

I too hope that Rolo is successfull so he may one day return to Hawaii after Coach Chow is ready to hang it up. But for now, I’m excited about Coach Chow.

  15. Stephen Tsai January 20, 2012 7:51 am

In the end, you go with whom you feel most comfortable, and Chow and Tommy Lee go way back.

It would be easy to imagine that more coaches would have been retained if the previous coach had really retired. But he didn’t, and when he departed, all of the coaches received reminders from the AD their contracts were expiring March 31.

Officially, nobody was retained. Tuioti and Funaki were hired, though.

  16. ai-eee-soos January 20, 2012 7:53 am

    This is a tremendous opportunity.

Best wishes to Rolo and his family.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Excellent post, Mr. Tsai. Says it all. Best of luck to Nick Rolovich and his family, I’m with ld808 at #8. Hopefully we’ll see Coach Rolo back again…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  18. Buffoman January 20, 2012 8:02 am

Kev-1 you never know what the future may hold. There may be a star about to be born in Coach Chow’s staff, who may be the heir apparent to coach if and when he decides to step away.

Rolo may be the next coming of our other successful alums, Ellerson, Niomatalolo (sp?), and to a certain extent, Paul Johnson (I really liked his offense) and make his mark on the continent.

These are good times for Rolo and our Warriors.

  19. primo123 January 20, 2012 8:02 am

    top twenty!

  20. misterfudge January 20, 2012 8:05 am

Scout.com reports that Ariz St decommit OG Dejon Allen coming in for a visit today. Quoted that Miano visited him last week. Know that the asst coaches contracts run until March and that NC said that he expects them to continue working. So who’s allowed to go out and recruit? How many of the previous staff are still involved in recruiting? Other than Coach Chow and Powell who are the recruiters for the new staff?

  21. tom mui January 20, 2012 8:13 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

#20 misterfudge – If Coach Chow is to be believed – and why should anyone doubt him – he said ALL coaches were expected to be recruiters which would include his new staff.

Coach Miano is a honorable man and probably the only one that is still working on the UH staff until the termination date in March, the others are either fully retired or on the job elsewhere. So if Coach Miano is still talking to recruits, he certainly would be doing so 100% for Hawaii.

  22. jkjones January 20, 2012 8:13 am

Chow made his statement. Now, Rolo must make his. Pursuing a college coaching career beyond the safety-net of Hawaii’s entitlement culture was the best thing to happen to Rolo.

His learning curve will grow…. and, undoubtably expand.

Someday, Rolovich will thank Norm Chow.

Ask Ken Niumatalolo where he would be if he wasnt willing to pay dues and go away.

There are many more examples. We know their names…who have gone away as unknowns and climbed the college football ladder.

If any question should be directed at Norm Chow–it should be how he benefited after he left the local high school coaching ranks. Or, after he left Provo–disappointed as he was with a head coach slight–and, how he turned it around at NC State.

Look, Miano and Lumpkin are classic examples of being stagnant. Bob Nash is another. Ditto for Takahara who had no-college experience. UH is paying the price. She wasnt ready for primetime.

Rolo’s departure isnt about entitlement. It’s about learning your trade and earning your keep.

And, nowadays, that is a value lesson too often traded for political favor.

  23. Stephen Tsai January 20, 2012 8:19 am

That might be an old post.

The non-retained are not permitted to recruit for UH.

  24. KeleguenBinadu January 20, 2012 8:20 am

Why was Rolo the only coach to not get a “will not be retained” media announcement?

Congrats to Rolo and his family.

After all this coaching drama and speculation, it is back to lurking for me. Can’t wait for the football season to begin. Go Warriors! BTW, when is ST gonna have another lurker day? 🙂

  25. mikey January 20, 2012 8:23 am

Rolo has the ability and knowledge of what it takes to move the football. It would be comforting for Rolo stay in Hawaii under Coach Chow but he needs to find his own road to Touchdown. That’s what Coach Chow did in his 40 years as OC. I hope Rolo doesn’t take that long to become a HC somewhere.

I do hope Rolo comes back to Hawaii someday as a HC like Coach Chow did. Rolo loves Hawaii and who doesn’t.

Good Luck Rolo and we’ll be watching you.

Since we are on the subject of coaches and the transitory nature of their chosen profession (I read that somewhere), former TAMU HC Mike Sherman penned a letter to all the Texas HS coaches after it was announced that he was replaced.

It’s a good look into why these coaches do what they do and his views on how they should go about doing it.

Several years ago, Niumatalolo wanted to go though the interview process for the experience. That was probably UH’s best and only chance to land him. Same with Kalani Sitake. Not sure if he’s ready to be a head coach now, but when he is, UH won’t be able to afford him. That’s where baseball scouts earn their money. It’s finding people who will project to greatness.

  41. cheepono January 20, 2012 8:52 am

awesome read d1shima. thanks for that. this part would really really really help breakdown the barriers between the general student population and the UH football players:

    VIII. Break Down Barriers

When I got to campus at Texas A&M, I felt there were barriers between our student body and our athletes. I felt our players had an overly high opinion of themselves but the students had a low opinion of our athletes. I have adamantly explained to our kids that they are “special” on Saturday when we play the game as well as when they practice and prepare to play. But during the week, walking across campus, they are students just like everyone else and should act and engage themselves that way. We were able to include the student body and faculty in a lot of football functions. This helped us eliminate the barriers.

I wanted our faculty and student body to embrace our players and wanted our players to embrace them as well. I believe we accomplished this. I believe when players play for something bigger then themselves, they player better.

  42. Stephen Tsai January 20, 2012 8:54 am

Rolo was in the running for a lot of jobs, including one in the Pac-12.

The UMass coach really wanted him.

Sort of reminds me of when Wagner hired Paul Johnson. I think Rolo is roughly the same age as when Johnson was hired.

  43. Couch potato January 20, 2012 8:55 am

  44. Otto January 20, 2012 8:55 am

#26 – Cuz the Sony Open brings in a lot of money, and it’s one of the handful of professional sports events held in Hawaii. “Verbal” commitments aren’t binding until they put it in writing, and the UH coaches can’t even talk about the recruits until they get the signed letter. It’s not big news until it’s real… so why should they waste the ink and space. Sony and all the other tournament sponsor buy a lot of ads in the paper, so the SA is being smart too… after all it is a business.

  45. Stephen Tsai January 20, 2012 8:56 am

Mahalo #31 d1shima for sharing Mike Sherman’s letter. He hit on many areas that all coaches at any level should aspire to. I use to coach baseball and that is something I always believed that sharing core values was extremely important and that the sport was a vehicle to accomplish that goal.

  51. Aaron January 20, 2012 9:10 am

c’mon, Rolo wasn’t here because Hawaii was “safe” or because of any kind of “entitlement”. He wanted to stay because coaching at Hawaii was his DREAM JOB. If you happened to land at your dream job way earlier than expected, you’d want to stay too.

Furthermore, to compare Miano to Bob Nash or George Lumpkin is also wrong. The guy’s only been coaching since JJ took over in 1999, where Nash and Lumpkin have been around for generations. There’s a big difference there.

  52. Aaron January 20, 2012 9:11 am

    ST,

It feels like Chow has reaaallly stepped up the recruiting for UH. Does it feel that way to me only because it is the hot topic right now or has he really taken it to another level?

Can you give me a scale of how much he has taken it up? Like JJ was a 1 as far as local recruit. I felt Mac was a 3. What would you give NC? It feels like a 9 or 10.

Lots of focus coming up on the QB position.

Jim Harbaugh is creating a stir for the difference he’s made to Alex Smith this season.

He’s talking here about developing a QB. Erryting from basic basics on up. Given his background and its similarities to the new Hawaii regime, I found it pretty interesting.

On #51 Aaron: you don’t get the point.

You don’t want to be like Miano, Nash or Lumpkin Stuck in Hawaii.

If you want to get ahead you need to move on to the Big Rock.

  60. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 9:30 am

Furthermore, to compare Miano to Bob Nash or George Lumpkin is also wrong. The guy’s only been coaching since JJ took over in 1999, where Nash and Lumpkin have been around for generations. There’s a big difference there.

I beg to differ. There are people who work for ten years and gain ten years of valuable experience. Then, there are those who work for ten years and gain 1 year of experience, ten times. It’s not the number of years, it’s how much they grow from their experience that matters.

  61. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 9:32 am

    Will-I-Am:

It will all depend on what players sign their LOI to UH come Feb.

  62. Pride. January 20, 2012 9:33 am

  63. WarriorNY January 20, 2012 9:34 am

    Pride,

There were four new hc’s. I don’t think Leech or Rodriguez would take Rolo cuz they implement their own offenses. Jim Mora was going for older more seasoned coaches. That just leaves ASU and Utah.

Using provided space in the sports section to report on happenings with a program that is in the forefront of local football fans with a new regime in place that has good momentum (i.e. shirt sales) isn’t a “WASTE OF SPACE”.

This wouldn’t have been the first time the paper reported a verbal commit for football in the sports section.

UH fans wouldn’t have asked for 3 different stories, just one at least.

  68. WarriorNY January 20, 2012 9:39 am

  72. Kevin January 20, 2012 9:51 am

Why? Dunno what’s so funny about that?

#267 yesterday is what I wrote about what I thought about Bobby Curran saying to listen to the radio broadcast of the women’s game to guage when the men’s game starts so people can be prepared.

    WTF is that?

How hard is it to say, get to the women’s game to get a good parking spot and support the Rainbow Wahine.

***NOW, if Curran was eluding to those still at work and on their way to the arena due to the early start time of the Wahine game, then fine, but unless I blanked out I didn’t hear that, but that is besides the point because instead of pointing to the radio broadcast he still could have still encouraged people to try to make the Wahine game and possible save some $$$ by buying a Wahine ticket and then moving up for the men’s game.

Real careless if you ask me and quite disrespectful, but hey, it’s women’s sports so who cares right????

People bitch and moan about how much money the women’s basketball program drains from athletics, but yet every ticket bought is something less that could be lost.

I still have yet to make it down there. Last season was perfect as I got out of the office by 5pm.. now been getting out by 7:30 if I am lucky and most of the time out by 8:00pm.

But that’s ok, no worries. UH football spring practice starts soon yeah???

Better recheck your statement about getting womens ticket at cheaper price. Yesterday no sale of wahine tickets instead men tickets sold only and went for $10.

I don’t recall any statement that the ticket office made but they insisted this was the policy and even said the whole ticket office knew. I calling BS on this.

  76. bigislandkurt January 20, 2012 10:05 am

I’m so stoked for Rolo and his family. What’s happening with them is a routine that takes place each and every year in the landscape of coaching D1 college football. Rolo is extremely fortunate as each year, there are many coaches who stay unemployed. There are only so much jobs to go around. To secure an OC and QB coach position at UMass is huge. I’m happy for that bradduh.

  77. bigislandkurt January 20, 2012 10:07 am

It could be a possibility. Are any Warriors originally from the Massachusetts/east coast area?

  81. jkjones January 20, 2012 10:24 am

@51. that’s the beauty of opinion, everyone has one. Having said that, i believe you miss the point on entitlement. Perhaps you dont understand its underlying meaning of social/political expectation or just have your own view. IDK.

Re Miano, his example is on point with Lumpkin and Nash. Miano isnt going anywhere. Never was.

Like Nash and Lumpkin, who wanted to serve their career as coaches in Hawaii. The proof is in the puddin–Miano hasnt moved on and he wont. Rich is deeply rooted in Hawaii.

BTW, both George Lumpkin and Bob Nash are the nicest guys you can meet. They are great family role models and successful gentlemen. Not intended to be trash talk.

My point is to become competent as a college coach, many aspiring coaches have followed a time-tested blueprint and placed their apprenticeship-residency into different programs and venues across the nation, to expand their skill-sets and overall comprehension. That is common practice in the trade and the reasoning for GA’s. You need to read more biography on coaches. It is a gypsy trade in nature.

All the options you cite can be assigned to one of these two categories. 82: I did not miss the point of entitlement as much as you missed the point of my post. I don’t think Rolo leaving is the “best thing that could have happened to him” as you mentioned. I don’t think the “entitlement culture” that you refer to has any impact on whether or not he becomes a great coach. I agree that he’s “making the best of it” by pursuing a job elsewhere, but it can be argued that the “best thing” for him would to have been able to stay for a few years and learn from coach Chow, who everyone is saying is an “offensive genius”. It’s not like Rolo hasn’t coached anywhere else (he coached at CCSF, which people forget). It’s also not like Norm Chow is going to be Hawaii HC forever either, so the window of chance to learn from someone like that is not very big (and has probably closed already). 3-5 years working under Norm Chow, while still being able to live and work where he wants to live? that’s the best possible outcome for him, in my opinion. in that scenario, he will have played for/coached with June Jones, Mouse Davis, and Norm Chow – not bad credentials for an aspiring Offensive Mastermind. I stick to my original opinion that it has nothing to do with safety or entitlement.

    #77…BIK

I think after spring practice we may see a few transfers, and some asked to not return, especially some of the slots. I don’t think our new offense will have a great need for 5’7-5’9 receivers. With the influx of potential O-lineman, that might be another area…with a new emphasis on run blocking, more than pass protect.

After spring, I believe some players will see whether they “fit” or not.

  86. al January 20, 2012 10:45 am

78…miah could be a candidate to transfer. Since he graduated he could play in the fall. Then he could stay on as a grad asst the following yr.

  87. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 10:47 am

So, will UMass be considered an FBS team next season or an FCS team under review for FBS status? If not “FBS” formerly, then can UH players transfer there and play next season without sitting out?

I don’t have any clever whimsical jokes to tell but, at one time, if you were up at this hour, you could always depend on a few jokes from LV. This was his time to turn loose. You could maybe even get in a conversation with him. But, even those would turn into a joke also.

I miss this man. I do yearn to read another post from him.

    Yeah. 😥

His Celebration of Life gathering (and karaoke call) is tonight at Genji’s, from 7:00 pm. All welcome.

las vegas, rasu begasu, maryann(e), John Collins brought the Tsai-kos together in Las Vegas 3 times and actually was the cause for the first Tsai-ko karaoke call in Hawaii. A-Joe was there. See:

Hope to see you folks tonight. But darn, it’s difficult knowing it’s the last one for John.

  90. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 10:53 am

    Will-I-Am…

The effort looks great, but if I’m not mistaken, the second year of Mack’s tenure, they looked really good too (effort wise) and everyone was hailing the first efforts to reconnect Kahuku with UH.

What’s more important than initial enthusiasm will be sustained enthusiam. Can they keep this up for the next four seasons to really build up a roster of champions?

  91. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 10:54 am

As starting positions get filled, will we still be able to recruit the blue-chip Hawaii player for the same position if the player ahead of him has two or more years remaining?

  92. Couch potato January 20, 2012 10:57 am

madeinhawaii, almost anywhere you go going get players with 2 or more years remaining. what you hope for as a player is the chance to compete and show what you have and earn the starting position. competition makes one better.

  95. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 11:03 am

While coaching under Chow would have been a great experience for Rolo, coaching under coach Charley Molnar isn’t a shabby deal either. In fact, Charley Molnar may be a better fit for Rolo, as Molnar, too, values the passing game. Last season, Molnar’s offense averaged over 400 yds/game at Notre Dame. Prior to that he was at Cincinnati till 2009, the season in which Cincinnati chewed our Warriors up and tossed them around like paper sacks.

#116 nanakuli – I haven’t seen the whole locker room but the little I did see it is in pretty bad shape, it is at least 17 years old and has not been any upgrades or maintained.

  117. GondaOhana January 20, 2012 1:01 pm

@89, Will-I-Am – just from the HS point of view, having 3 sons over these 7 years playing HS ball + all their football friends and talent, I would give chow a 9 on recruiting effort here at home in the last 2 weeks compared to former years. He and his staff are infiltrating local high schools (and not just Kahuku!), talking to our local kids and really causing some excitement here at home. Kids are changing the attitude of “just going away” and are really considering staying home a great opportunity. I believe it has a lot to do with the interest theyʻre being showed that has been missing in the past.

@112, A-Team: I have heard a lot of the same and my son also really likes the new staff and especially the new head coach. We are looking forward to an exciting season! GO WARRIORS!!

  118. turfwar January 20, 2012 1:02 pm

A-Team thanks for some insight. If Coach Chow needed funds specifically for the locker room clean up/ refurbishing I for one would be more than happy to contribute. Let’s also see if the Gov was just talk or is actually going to help Norm get it done. But if it needs to be grass roots then so be it. I think a lot of people would be willing to help Norm get it done.

  140. Bowwar January 20, 2012 3:16 pm

#136 – I don’t think people are that simplistic in their criticism of Miano…He’s a nice guy (like Mack), but if you look over the years, the defensive secondary has not performed as well as it should have. Is that an indication of good coaching? Miano would improve his coaching advancement possibilities by going off somewhere and expanding his resume. I don’t think anyone can argue that?

  141. madeinhawaii January 20, 2012 3:43 pm

    Bowwar,

I agree. Part of College coaching is to leave your footprint and fingerprints in different locations. Get to know the high school coaches around the various States. Share weekends and experiences with other coaches. If you don’t go, how can you expect someone from someplace else to come? The sacrifices and insecurities of going somewhere else to coach are somewhat similar to that incoming student from abroad. Earn the respect of other head coaches and assistant coaches so that when the opportunity strikes one can say, matter of factually, “I’ve had at least 400 applications for assistant coaching positions already.”

Miano is a good guy…no doubt, bt there is more to being a head coach than that.

I graduated from Campbell h.s. a while back, we had our graduation at the stadium. We got to use the away teamslocker rooms to get ready in. Those lockers were very run down abused and very rusty. There was a lot of wooden furnish that was eaten by termites and the smell smell of tar, not overbearing but barely tolerable. I can’t imagine the home teams lockers…..but everything was either naked wood or iron…both damaged by years, pests an abuse. I don’t know but it doesn’t look maintained much. I’ve been lucky enough to get an insider tour of a professional baseball team’s locker room and I will tell you that the common space looks like the buffet area of a casino. It is unbelievably plush with anything a professional athlete would want. The lockers were like a shallow version of a walk in closet in a 4 star hotel.

To even think Aloha Stadium is remotely close to that to give the professional players a feeling of “home” is just not in the realm of being close to being on the same page.

If you asked Shane or any of the local players who were even at the AAA level of the difference in locker facilities, I would say they’d say miles and miles apart.

At the professional level they really go all out. I cannot begin to imagine what it must look like at Cowboy stadium.

Be careful when using statistics in derterming the qualifications of a coach. College football is too complicated a game to do that. After he left USC Norm Chow’s offensive statistics were dreadful. Should that alone have disqualified him from being considered as HC. Of course not. Why? Because college football is too complicated a game to do that.

Small kine rant: Speaking of the state of facilities on the Manoa campus, have you used the men’s bathroom on the ground floor of the Athletic Complex? Looks like the bathrooms they use for those anti-drug commercials on TV. Be nice to have some hand soap since there are any dispensers to begin with – helps to prevent the spread of germs and viruses.

    hi Wafan

i am truly sorry i am not in Honolulu tonight. JohnCollins was a great Tsaiko, a very good man, one of us.

I am going to miss him too, and am really sorry I’m missing out on the friendship and comraderie the other Tsaikos and John’s family and other friends are sharing tonight at

Cheers to Brudda John Collins, aka Las Vegas.

  182. jkjones January 20, 2012 7:20 pm

Like most Hawaii fans watching Norm Chow skillfully installing his recruiting game–I am an observant grasshopper. So far, learning has been delightful. Take Shane Brostek, consensus No 1 blue-chipper in the 50th state. All 6-3 and 300 lbs of him.

Brostek claims no offer has come from UH.

Shane has already made visits to Colorado, Wash, Oregon and UCLA. Teams that UH annually pleads nolo contendere when in hot pursuit of local high school talent. Its like the skinny kid asking the homecoming queen to go to the prom. They back-off.

We have seen this scenario occur here year after year and with the exception of Dick Tomey, top-tier pursuits were seen as futile attempts. Hence an unwritten doctrine was shaped in Manoa, that locals playing out of State was a casualty of rock fever.

Enter the Dragon. Not only does Chow visit Brostek and offer a scholarship, but not to be outdone on his turf, he takes 3-other warrior coaches for good measure. Howzat that for love?

Look, Brian Cabral is a loner. He cant top that number. Wearing a malo is getting tired. Cross out the Buffs. As for the rest of the PAC 12 teams, Hawaii has a new head coach and he knows your sales pitch. He beat-up on all your teams and potty-trained your coaches. Just saying, what most grasshoppers observe.

Not sure if anyone posted this from the East West Shrine Game

Vaughn Meatoga, DT, Hawaii — Meatoga is an athletic big man who beat opponents the past two days with quickness and power. He was able to exploit lesser blockers off the snap with his first step and also showed power and leverage in his game. He’s more a conventional defensive tackle in a four-man line, and scouts walk away pleased with Meatoga’s display this week.

Kaniela Tulpulotu, DT, Hawaii — The other defensive tackle from Hawaii, Tulpulotu showed many of the same skills as his Warrior teammate. He may be a bit more athletic, and easily chases the action in pursuit. Tululotu has set himself up for a rise up draft boards if he performs well in workouts.

John Collins was a one of a kind man who lived enough to fill many lives in his time on earth. A Warrior, philosopher and truly, a poet, he embodied all the best of the ties that bind. We are saddened by his loss and blessed by his memory.

We miss you John. Rest in Peace.

That aside, I think that a multiple-contributor blog would give you support and provide some other perspectives. You could combine this with your ideas on coaching/ghostwriting and work with ‘intern’ contributors to hone their skills, see their work supplying your site, and give them the tools they need to take your philosophies and understanding out on their own tangents. It might give you a regular supply of fresh, new writers and keep things going while allowing you to step back a little. Good Morning all,

I thought this was interesting. After reading about the NY Giants offense, I learned they use a pro-style offense that incorporates run-n-shoot principles. I have a feeling our offense will look a lot like the NY Giants. In his press conference, Coach Chow said “A lot of the pass concepts the “run and shoot” provides are still there in the pro-style, drop back style game. Will we throw it every time? Probably not. I think we need to have balance…we need to run it a little bit.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Patriots_strategy#Other_teams_running_similar_offensive_systems

The New York Giants with Coughlin and Gilbride from 2004–present but they also employ a run ‘n” shoot or streak and read principle offense. “It’s different than it was at Michigan,” Manningham said. “At Michigan, it was man or zone. That’s all you needed to know. Now you need to know what the backside corners are doing, what the water boy is doing and everybody else.”

That’s because the Giants have an offense that employs a “streak-read principle” for its receivers. The routes don’t just depend on the play that’s called in the huddle. They have to make sight adjustments when they get to their spot in the formation based on where the cornerbacks and safeties are aligned.

“You’ve got to look at DBs and (middle) linebackers. You’ve got to look at the whole defense,” Manningham said. “The routes depend on what the coverage is. You come out and you know what you’ve got to do, but it may change the whole thing after you get done looking at the coverage.”

WarriorNY: Not sure if you saw this article on Grantland. It’s authored by Chris Brown, the guy who runs the Smart Football blog (which d1shima and I both read). Brown’s also written a bunch of articles on the R&S (see paragraph 6 of the article below for those links).

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7481235/chris-brown-victor-cruz-new-york-giants

  275. d1shima January 21, 2012 8:00 am

From time to time the “analysts” on the NFL broadcasts will talk about adjustments made to routes that enabled a big play to happen.

I think all those teams have come to expect that out of their offensive personnel to some degree.

As someone stated a while back everyone is using the Choice route in their package.

RnS principles have more or less become mainstream but will probably never be used as a single philosophy by any team.

Next up seems to be headed towards spread offenses and zone reads (and expendable QB’s)

  276. WarriorNY January 21, 2012 8:07 am

    Jason,

    Thanks for the website.

D1shima, No doubt that all NFL teams use principles. It was just interesting to me that the Giants use as much as they do.

  281. Manoa2 January 21, 2012 8:50 am

D1ShimaWhat is pure run and shoot or pure West Coast Proset?

is the pure run and shoot what JJ ran in the NFL with one or two big H Backs and QB under center? Is it mix of routes he devised with Bill Walsh in two two week film sessions? Is it the heavy pass oriented offense he ran here? Is it the 50/50 balance of run and pass with tight end/Hbacks, two 1,000 yard rushers he runs at SMU with mix of adjusting and set routes (as he did here with Colt– wheel routes, crack and bubble screens)?

There are even more variations of the West Coast offense or the multiple West Coast or Proset. Is it Harbaugh at Stanford, Walsh, Holmgren, Chow at USC, Boise (or is Boise some Dirk Koetter variation), Chow at USC, Holmgren, Shanahan, Leach at Texas Tech?

Do you spread the field geographically and force more pass coverage so you can run or pass depending on the D (the 4 wide spread) or do you pack in the beef with a TE, FB and RB (but adjust pre and post snap by spreading the field over time, releasing, TE, RB, and/or FB as receivers depending on blitz and coverage?)

Today in football it is not about system and what you call it– it is really about plays. Harbaugh borrows the fly sweep from a high school coach and JJ and Klemm borrow several of plays from the patriots who in turn borrow and score with plays they borrow from JJ and Klemm (Klemm now at UCLA).
