Downtown renewal

For those old enough, there probably was a cringe-worthy moment when  it was announced that the Downtown Athletic Club was being formed.

Besides the legal aspects of using a name that might be copyrighted by the folks that deliver the Heisman Trophy, “downtown” and “UH” are words associated with a time of back-room politics and power. It was the so-called “downtown hui” of the 1970s  and early 1980s that stirred UH sports.

But times have changed, and yesterday’s inaugural Downtown Athletic Club showed that power has been restored to the people.

Evidence No. 1: In the Q&A session with Norm Chow, a man who admittedly is a UH supporter but not ticket-buyer was allowed to ask two non sequitur questions and, as it turned out, was the grand-prize winner.

Evidence No. 2: The event was open to the public, and broadcast live.

The premise is that a lot of people work downtown, so why not hold sport-related luncheons within walking distance? Power brokers will attend, but so will a guy asking — twice — about Chow’s thoughts on Tim Tebow. As club president Keith Amemiya said, the intent is to make it an “inclusive” organization.

The biggest problem, though, is finding a follow-up guest.

I consider Norm Chow a professional. He has been an outstanding football coach for many years now. His last name really has nothing to do with his past success. Are there other ways that we can promote the football program without playing on his last name? I think that we can be more creative than that. Apologize to those who are simply having fun.

By the way, my kids do call me “scrooge”.

Abercrombie making a state of the football program speech?

His first promise will be to install a permanant podium at HIAP arrivals to greet new coaches followed by reassurance that he will always have an aide present to clarify his wishful thinking statements from reality.

  24. Jon January 12, 2012 9:06 am

The Tebow guy was a little off, not sure why he got the Mic again. I’d always wanted to go to Quarterback Club lunches but it’s not convenient for me as I work downtown. I’m interested to see what becomes of the DAC, could be very positive.

I agree that the puns playing on Coach Chow’s name are way overdone and I find them disrespectful. We don’t want to be a cartoon here, we want our football program to be high-class in every way we can.

wow ryan katz (oregon state) and brice butler (usc) are transferring to san diego state and eligible to play in 2012. dillon baxter (usc) is also considering transferring there. they’re gonna have some offensive fire power next year. will make for a great game!

Evidence of being ‘lucky’ is not the same as being “deserving”.

  42. Stu Padasso January 12, 2012 10:15 am

We should give the guy “Tony”, asking those weird questions, some slack. He could have easily spent his $20 on another bag of ice or crack, but he instead chose it to attend the function. He’s a true fan.

  43. Kevin January 12, 2012 10:19 am

Wasn’t it amazing how Coach Chow reacted to hearing about fans being told by other fans to sit down?

Coach Chow comes from places UH fans want to be associated with so his reaction, which seemed almost speechless, says a lot about the culture that has been developing over the last decade or so at UH sporting events.

No amount of rah rah from Coach Chow or PSA’s from UH or Chow himself will debunk this mindset by a certain demographic of UH fans that are season ticket holders. It’s like being caught in a rock and a hard place and at the risk of sounding DARK and morbid… TIME is the only thing that will wipe this problem away from UH venues if you know what I mean………

So much for a clear day… just clouded up and it’s now raining again.

Kevin… now I’m wondering if Coach Chow will have an effect on the Stadium’s policy of telling people to sit down… along with having tailgating fans close up shop just ’cause they feel like it.

The game I went to at the Big House, there were lots of fans left in the parking lot still tailgating when we went in. I asked a few why they didn’t go in, and their response was that they “didn’t have tickets to the game.” They were prepared to listen to the game on the radio and kept the food warm for family and friends who went in.

  52. Stu Padasso January 12, 2012 11:00 am

But you need $50 for season ticket deposits…Tony only had a twenty.

  53. Kevin January 12, 2012 11:15 am

    WW,

In my opinion… NO. It’s not a knock on Coach Chow, but you have to look at the people that are telling others to sit down or be quiet and people like that will not waiver their attitudes after decades and decades of that mindset.

  54. Kevin January 12, 2012 11:23 am

Tailgating.. I dunno what’s happening in the lot, but I do personally believe that people need to adhere to some kind of rule with this.

Bottom line… tailgating is a PRIVILEGE… not a right. Tailgating is one of those things that just become an unwritten acceptance of ritual. Not sure when fans are being asked to close up shop but there should be a median. Like say, 30 minutes after kickoff at the LATEST, you MUST close up.

You give too many people free range, they WILL abuse it. It’s human nature.

  59. Manoa January 12, 2012 11:39 am

I miss the old tailgating atmosphere– still have it in many some areas of the lot because not as many people come and use the stalls. But if crowds build, it won’t be like Norm describes it as the police will be breaking it up.

We need to look at allowing areas to tailgate and areas to park and they don’t all need to be at the stadium itself.

A good job of planning is called for.

  60. madeinhawaii January 12, 2012 11:39 am

How did our Hawaii team fare against Thom Kaumeyer’s Defense?

In 2002, Hawaii barely squeaked by SDSU. SDSU actually had 21 more offensive yards than Hawaii… the final score.. 42-41 in Hawaii’s favor.

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/custompages/stats/fball/2002/G13.htm

In 2005, Hawaii had 34 yards more on offense than SDSU and won 49 -38. But SDSU had more passing yards…Hawaii actually out gained them on the ground. http://hawaiiathletics.com/custompages/Stats/Fball/2005/120305.htm#GAME.TEM

Both games could have gone either way.

I posted a year or two ago about my one game experience in the Big House. Bleacher seats. We stood the whole game and sat during time-outs, commercial breaks, and between quarters. I understand what you’re saying about those old fans who can’t stand the cheering because it interferes with the radio listening experience. Maybe as part of ticket sales, a little flyer should be handed out explaining that standing and cheering is part of the home crowd experience, so such behavior is to be expected. And as long as fans aren’t belligerent, they won’t be removed.

I asked about tailgating because I haven’t been to a home UH game in ages. Not easy to go to games living on the mainland since ’96. I’ve read that people are being chased out of the parking lots and into the stadium. Is it so that security or HPD (whoever is on hand) can get into the stadium to watch the game too, and not have to patrol the parking lots? Or are they like school bus drivers and go off the clock once the game starts, and then back on at the end of the game?

Wonder if they could designate a tailgate only section and sell passes accordingly, like in the area across the bridge where the State Fair usually sets up. Or would we be opening up a drunken mess with such an area? I don’t really know anyone who gets beer muscles and pick fights every time they get drunk, but I know they exist.

There are many fans/season ticket holders who attend games who cannot stand for long periods of time due to physical disability, age, etc. They should not be expected to be staring at somebody’s rear end during the course of the game. Having due courtesy & respect to others should not go out the window.

If standing is SO important to some, go have a section where the seats are removed and you can stand to your heart’s content and not block the view of others who prefer or cannot stand.

  75. Garret January 12, 2012 12:55 pm

It looks like the MWC and CUSA may decide to form a completely new conference and not all of the schools will be represented at the meeting on Sunday. Is UH going to have a representative at the meeting? It would be nice for someone from UH to be there to make sure that UH is invited to this new conference and to put in a request for the travel subsidies to be decreased or eliminated.

Presidents from the Mountain West and Conference USA will meet Sunday in Dallas to discuss forming a new league, CBSSports.com has learned.

The move was not described as a full-on merger and talks are still in the early stages. According to a source, the new league could be football only, all sports or some other consolidation. Two sources said not all of the two conferences’ presidents will attend the meeting.

There are sections of the stadium for University of Texas games where EVERYONE is required to stand. Those are the prime seats on one side of the stadium (the side with the students), where I sat between the 30 and 40 yard lines because I agreed to stand all game and hold up signs (placed below each seat) during some halftime shows. I paid nothing besides the student athletic fee. People who didn’t want to stand could sit on the other side of the stadium, and students who didn’t want to stand could sit in the student seats closer to the end zones.

This way people who want to stand and make noise during the games could sit together and those who wanted to just sit could sit away from them.

  78. Garret January 12, 2012 1:04 pm

Wyoming’s head coach signed a contract extension for $1.2 mil per year, but only $190k comes from Wyoming…over $1 mil of his salary is from donors apparently.

UH got an amazing bargain with Coach Chow’s $550k salary. Coach Chow took less money to free up money for his assistants, which enabled him to hire a DC with excellent credentials. With Coach Chow running the offense and the younger coaches focused on recruiting, that DC hire was key and I think Coach Chow chose very well.

Christensen’s new five-year deal will include total compensation of $1.2 million per year, with a base salary of $190,008 per year. The new contract will run through Dec. 31, 2016. Aside from the increase to the base salary, which was $180,000 in Christensen’s previous contract, the balance of the contract will be supported by non-state resources.

  80. aaron January 12, 2012 1:10 pm

i’m not an old guy who wears headphones at the games, but i’m get irritated when other fans get in your face and tell you how to cheer. people should be free to enjoy the game as they please. if enough people get excited, it’ll catch on and people will get on board. but when people get in your face and make you feel bad for not being as crazy as them, that’s damn irritating.

This happened to me at the SSC on NYE vs UNLV – I was there by myself and sitting in an empty row. the game was very tight, and i tend to get very focused and quiet during those kinds of games. These 2 guys came down from the upper section late in the 2nd half and sat in the empty seats next to me. they tried to start a cheering competition with the group of UNLV fans that were sitting nearby. because no one in the immediate area “backed them up”, they started yelling at US and giving us a hard time for not cheering up to what they felt was required of us. this went on for the remainder of the game, as they would constantly speak to each other loudly enough to make sure that we all can hear how crummy we are as fans. being that everyone in the arena that day chose to spend their New Years Eve at a basketball game, I thought it was a very lame thing to do.

I remember back when I was a student at UH we were at a basketball game and standing after the tip and until the first basket was made, until the guy behind me (we were in the student section) asked me to sit down. I remember being really angry and frustrated and disappointed with the kinds of fans we have. But as I got older and wiser I realized that it wasn’t his fault as much as it is the fault of the kind of game day experience people here are used to. I also realized that “telling” people to stand up (or telling anyone to do anything in general) does not work. People need to to “want” to be more fanatical before they actually do it. The solution is to find a way to get people to want to be more crazy or whatever.

In regards to stadium staff telling people to sit down (i’ve never seen this myself), do you ever see stadium staff tell anyone to sit down when the entire crowd is standing, like during any one of those exciting games back in 2007? The best way to get the stadium staff off our backs is for everyone to be standing and cheering. We need to address the causes of the problems, not the effects.

The non-chalant attitude is engrained and maybe Coach Chow has been on the mainland for too long, which explains his ‘shocked’ response to how people are being asked to sit down.

Coach Chow might have to get used to a subdued home crowd at this stage of his career compared to the REAL college atmospheres he’s enjoyed for most of his career.

Coach Chow’s wish of a real home advantage crowd will NEVER be realized during his coaching tenure even if it extends beyond this current contract.

In 2007, the North end zone was a war zone between fans old and young alike and the ushers. For the most part, even the older folks don’t mind the stuff people cry about to stadium authority.

In section TT orange level between rows 18-21 AFTER we interecepted a possible tying TD for UW in the endzone at the end of regulation, three ushers and one HPD officer were trying to take away a man that was running up and down the stairs hi-5’ing everyone.

After it was decided that the man would not be taken away, an older guy in his late 50’s maybe in front of us who had an aisle seat started calling out one of the ushers and you could clearly hear him say, “hey, all season you been harassing people for cheering wots your ******** problem?”

I think common sense needs to be used as far as attending UH games at the stadium. Respect for those around you is one of them. Not all of our fans are college students. That being said, I think the fighting in the stands have more of a negative effect to the stadium experience than old grouchy fans. In the end, everyone paid to attend the game and should enjoy it without someone else ruining it for them. Aloha.

    Goes both ways.

When people get subdued for cheering and standing at sporadic times, that too ruins their experience.

  90. Kevin January 12, 2012 1:41 pm

Speaking of experience. Anyoen ever talked to a UH student-athlete that got told to sit down when standing and making noise during our defensive 3rd down when the majority of the time they were sitting down?

Yeah, that sends a message too.

Coach Chow can concern himself with the atmosphere at Aloha Stadium, but it might be a waste of his valuable time.

  94. Lopaka January 12, 2012 1:46 pm

    Kevin,

That’s true. I know the feeling nobody like being told what to do and what not to do. That’s why I say just common sense and respect for others. Also, as regards to the stadium staff, I don’t envy them. All they hear are complaints and they’re just doing they’re jobs. It’s hard to keep everyone happy.

    1) Did he eventually stop?

    2) Did security have to get involved?

  118. kev-1 January 12, 2012 3:05 pm

Is it really that difficult to “place” people with conditions that prevent them from standing in certain sections?

I know nothing about running a stadium, but would it be impossible to do this . . .

    1. close off all upper sections of the stadium (top down) and only open up when lower sections are full (not sure if they do this or not). That way you get the condensed feel that would produce concentrated noise and that college football atmosphere that Coach wants.

    2. Categorize your seat selections, such as “family,” “senior preferred,” and “open.” If you are with your children, you sit in the family section. If you are elderly and prefer not to stand and people around you not to stand, you sit in the senior section. If you don’t care and won’t complain, you sit in the open section. You could spread these sub-sections around the stadium to be fair and not monopolize good or bad seats for one particular group.

If this was done, I think you would find that the people choosing to be in more private sections are the few compared to the many.

    3. Lighten up on the ushering, for crying out loud. Only thing worse than a cop with an attitude is a guy who isn’t a cop but thinks he is with an attitude.

  119. VonAppen January 12, 2012 3:08 pm

The whole goal of playing a home game is to create a crowd atmosphere so loud that the opposing team’s offense can’t hear themselves when they are calling plays at the line of scrimmage. Make it tough for them to play, and frankly, meek clapping just isn’t going to do the trick. So use those vocal chords, and let some air out of those lungs. See a player on the field who looks just a bit too skinny? Let him know about it. See the defense lining up for a big third down stop? Chant “De-fense” to urge them on. See that wide receiver inevitably drop that pass when he was wide open over the middle? By all means let him know about it.

    You got to get up!

Cheering by itself, however, is not enough. When it’s that pivotal third down play on defense, or as our offense is driving down the field, stand up and give the team the standing ovation it deserves. The other great part about standing up? If you and the person next to you do it, just motion around, and before you know it, everyone around you will be standing and cheering as well.

    GET IN THE GAME!!

I don’t know about the sideline sections, but I have never seen seats so narrow with legroom so tight. You couldn’t even lift a beverage cup without banging into your neighbor. I was fortunate that the seat next to me was vacant so I could sit sideways with my legs in the adjacent seat (or stand up). Then my neck got sore from watching the game sideways . . .

The issue, as it ALWAYS has been, is Aloha Stadium’s lack of handicap support.

As a venue, it is YOUR responsibility to make proper accomodations for ALL the demographics you will entertain. The area between the orange and blue is a high traffic area and the row in front of the handicap section is not low enough for handicap individuals to see if people stand.

Passing the responsibility to your clients is a typical lack of action by another state run institution when things should have been done to minimize conflicts between groups of people.

  129. kev-1 January 12, 2012 3:17 pm

Umm . . . what handicap support? Don’t they just stick them in the walkway behind a row of seats so everytime someone stands up they can’t see? If they are going to continue to just make wheelchairs pull up behind rows and not be able to sit with people they know or come to the game with, then they need to remove that last row. That way the guy in front of them who stands up will be a row down and may not block as much view.

What they need to do is convert sections of the orange section top row into a row similar the handicap sections on the bus, where a seat can be folded away so a wheelchair can be put there. That way they can sit with their family and/or friends.

I think that the demographic of the football games has to have a shift. If the older fans want to sit all game, have a designated section for them. If families want to bring children have a section for families (I hate it when my young 6 year old boy gets beer spilled on him and he has to ask me what does F _ _ _ mean?) I would take him to the family section. Most of all surround the lower levels with loud screaming students like all of the big time schools. You know I saw some older fans, very conservative and they would ask security to remove the loud fans that stand in front of them. Crazy. Let’s all be honest here, the majority of fans are older yakuza

Money does not buy happiness….so if someone overpays for what it gets…..well thats what you get. A lot of buy outs, pre-pays, and another expensive coaching search. Big time or winning has little to do with salary unless you earn it—UH did a good job and time will tell. Winning breeds revenue, if you are part of that you share in that—-Ron Zook got paid a lot of money to leave as did dozens of others.

Okay now another group wants to compete with the Honolulu QuarterBack club? Why not work with them to have on of the meetings downtown? Where you meet does not mater as Nakoa has it a the Willows and the Qb club joins in for the season. Both have buffets and parking. Down town is fine for an hour but these meetings last longer when film and questions are asked. Who will they ask? High school and HPU since that is the closest college but no UH during football season. Qb club gets speakers from around the island and Keith should think twice about re making a better club. The Qb club was started in the 40s by a few members like the General-Les Keiter. They honor all sports and when they have the banquet for yearly awards the whole sports community comes out. Hey Keith whats up?

  160. PolyMom January 12, 2012 5:42 pm

@Stephen Tsai, actually I think there is lots of great future speakers. In LA many of the reporters like your self speak every six weeks or so. I could see you speaking giving YOUR perspective of sports. Lots of folks to get in there to talk. I would like to hear kids who are being recruited and how their journeys go. It would also teach the young kids some public speaking so they do not seem stupid when they are interviewed by folks like you Stephen,

Regarding standing up and looking at okoles…at the Coliseum expect to stand up. But civility has seemed to end in our current society. I feel sorry for the handicap people who want to enjoy the games.

I have long complained about our fans and stadium / arena standing issues. I am no spring chicken yet still love to stand and cheer for good plays, when our defense needs some fan help, when it’s a close, exciting drive, etc… I have been told to sit so many times I can’t even keep count. Last season I was almost removed from the game when an usher told me to sit down, I refused and said “no, our team needs us to stand right now” which then led me to ask “where is it posted as a rule that I have to sit down?”

I am not obnoxious but ok maybe I have some beers in me but geez…I have been to quite a few other college football stadiums and we have the largest % of apethetic, quiet, sit down, shut up and clap softly fans. It’s kind of embarassing if you ask me. Hey..it’s an NCAA Division 1 football game, not a church service.

By the way I missed it…what was Norm Chow’s take on all this?

I haven’t followed volleyball in a long time. However I used to have season tickets to both mens and wahine during the Yuval Katz era.

I just so happened to watch the game tonight and saw a really small crowd. It was never like that when I used to go. Used to be several thousand.

    What happened?

  225. Chris Hart January 12, 2012 8:38 pm

#162 – The Downtown athletic Club does plan to support sports at all levels from Amemiya’s Intermediate after school program to the HHSAA to Pac west to UH. See the website – downtownathletciclubhawaii.org. I respect Herman Stern and what the QB Club is all about, but they are not at the same level they once were in the 50’s and 60’s. This is an organization with names like Duane kurisu, keith Amemiya, Don murphy, Ray Ono, Kalowena Komeiji, Peter Ho, Kurt Osaki in the forefront and many big players in the background who can get things done… These players have a track record of proven success and are committed to their mission.

  226. al January 12, 2012 8:44 pm

looking ahead…cusa-mwc merger is all fine and daddy. it was better to do this than nothing at all. but, really, how realistic is it that the bcs boys would want to cut them in even if for just one entity come bcs bowl pairings.

they are already not too happy with hawaii, utah, bsu, tcu, and the like who cracked the egg in the past.

what, realistically speaking once again should we look forward to? oh yeah, pac-12 would be nice to have. but, is it a possiblity? really, i think not, not in the next decade.

for us to be considered at all we’d have to br a perennial top ten team with a very broad and expansive market base which would include millions in the asian market.

reaslitically, we’d have a better chance at lobbying for the big east. as the movers and shakers of bcs football keep poaching one another we’d have to hope that the big east goes completely continental.

we’d have to be in position when that happens. can it be done?

it could, but, it’d take a miracle worker or two. like chow and amemiya for example with the support of the key members of the new downtown athletic club.

  227. Chris Hart January 12, 2012 8:48 pm

    Hi Al!

  228. al January 12, 2012 8:52 pm

chris…this is true. the qb club has had its moments of glory and has done a lot in the past.

but, the times they are a changing.

na koa should not be slighted either as their focus is limited to football. they are an attraction to the necessary smaller money in the scheme of things financial to its mission.

the dac though is looking at sports in a broader sense for the benefit of the youth, the sports, the students, and the community. they have reaches in bigger playing fields of the financial support venues. i don’t think that dac’s mission is to destroy the qb club nor na koa, but, rather to bring to the total picture that which is lacking to develop sports throughout the state and making us a known entity in the global market. the benefactor is the state, its people, and its businesses.

    …nuff said

al . . . I agree that Pac12 is a pipe dream for Hawaii, but with a big name coach back at the helm combined with a winning future, UH should push hard for Pac12’s next expansion. They need to start now. No only means no when it comes to women.

  241. al January 12, 2012 9:06 pm

how fast is 5.5 in the forty?

imagine greg salas sprinting from the 40 to the goal line and soon after in “thousand and one” crosses the 6’6″ 330 lb hoko fanaika.

  242. Chris Hart January 12, 2012 9:07 pm

Al – the DAC includes Na Koa in their events. at the last gig, they had a table for sign ups. As for my daughter Courtney… She double majored at HPU in Corporate Communications and Business ( How cool is it for a school to let the kid play for 4 years and then pay for her education to double major that lasted 5.5 years!) She is working in sales at Paradise Beverages right now.

  243. al January 12, 2012 9:08 pm

i wonder if ray hisatake or francis maka has anything to do with fanaika’s visit?

or is this the result of lewis powell’s connections?

i wondered why in the past few years we stopped recruiting the san mateo cc school that is always loaded with big polynesian men.

#228 Charlie Wade seems to be trying to go after more international players so I hope to see the arena fill up like the days when UH had players like Yuval too! Maybe Thursdays are hard for people, i myself had a twelve hour day today so raced home to catch end of second set.

  246. al January 12, 2012 9:13 pm

one small thing that coach chow did mention and to me that was very significant is that he recognized the huge polynesian population that has been blossoming in euless, texas. schools from that area have been impacting the huge texas hs championships lately.

he mentioned that it would be area that they would also target.

you got to just love the passion and enthusiasm our coach has in recruiting. he has already outhustled our past coaches.

iwwthm – Re: crowd at Warrior vb – several reasons I can think of:

    1) as with almost all UH sports, attendance is down from the heydays of the 80’s and early 90’s

    2) Thursday game

    3) opponent tonight (Springfield) was one of those schools that no one seems to have heard of

Saturday’s game vs UCLA will have a crowd of around 4000, I hope.

You guys really need to come down and support the team. Charlie Wade has attendance goals in his contract.

One of the best things about being a member of a booster club is getting to meet the players.

    I get last word today?

People should not have to check their Aloha, Kokua, and Ohana at the gate when they attend UH Football games at Aloha Stadium. However, many people feel [with help of beverages] that anything goes in the name of “fandom.” You being a good, spelled boisterous to the point of obnoxious, fan does not give you the right to disrespect the other folks in the stands. It is not your birth-right to make big body and say “Ehh, like scrap?” to anyone who asks you nicely to tone it down a bit so that you and your aunty, tutu, etc can enjoy the game. Ohhhh Yeah, and while i am on the subject, it is not your birth-right to tear up programs, especially when you grab 10 of them on the way in the door, and rain confetti on the field and stadium by launching it into the wind. What you should have to check at the gate – your desire to be a punk, your desire to come to the game for the possibility that ther maybe a good fight to be had, your desire to act like an ass and get all the attention you never get at home. Nuff said.

Getting low-priced auto batteries may perhaps seem like saving oneself a very good amount of income to start with but this may basically result in you to expend more. Prime quality batteries charge slightly bit additional since they final lengthier.

    WARRIOR FOOTBALL

After first meeting, players like Chow’s vibe

    By Stephen Tsai

    POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Jan 13, 2012

Norm Chow hustled from meeting to meeting Thursday as he began the process of building the 2012 Hawaii football team.

His itinerary was punctuated with his first team meeting, after which the Warriors emerged with renewed enthusiasm.

“It’s a great thing,” middle linebacker George Daily-Lyles said. “Change is good. Right now, everyone is enthused.”…

I’m excited for the players and the fans and can’t wait for the FB season to start!! 🙂
