Hartong wins another weekly BWC honor
Senior hitter Emily Hartong picked up her second Big West women’s volleyball player of the week in four weeks today. It was the third for a Rainbow Wahine this month; senior setter Mita Uiato was honored last week.
Hartong averaged 4.18 kills and 3.09 digs en route to the MVP honors at the Shocker Volleyball Classic. The Rainbow Wahine defeated South Dakoto, No. 23 Creighton and Wichita State.
Hartong hit .284 (46-13-116) for the tournament with double-figure kills in each match and double-doubles in two of them. She had a match-high 20 kills on .311 hitting (20-6-45) while adding 16 digs and a pair of service aces against the Bluejays, helping UH to its third win over a ranked opponent this year.
She opened the tournament with 13 kills, 13 digs and three blocks against South Dakota. Hartong also swung at a .278 clip with 13 kills in the finale against Wichita State. She leads the Big West in kills per set (4.70).

if Hawaii takes care of business in their conference, Im hoping the NCAA selection folks will “gift” Coach Shoji with a region…this could be his final year. No one is more deserving, no one has earned more consideration, no one would bemoan the wahine for earning a pole position in the post season playoffs.

Is the Kam/Punahou match tomorrow?
Yes kam vs pun tomorrow Tuesday sept. 24 on oc16 at 7p. I believe kam comes into this game being favored. Kam just returned this past weekend from the durango fall classic in Vegas and finished 2nd in the field of 64 teams. They lost in the championship game to Torrey pines 26-24, 23-25 and 26-24, who I believe is ranked #1. That would put kam possibly in the top 5-10 in the nation. Should still be an awesome game with Granato on the other side of the net.

It will not be a cakewalk in the Big West Conference as the Wahine have a target on their backs and every team will come at the Wahine with everything they got and I think Shoji knows it and I do hope the team knows it, too, and doesn’t become lackadaisical because of the preseason records of the BW teams. Plez don’t jump to conclusions and say Shoji should play this person and give that person a shot…stick with what got him and the team this far and when things seem to be in control, then he can sub liberally giving other players that opportunity to exemplify their skills. Trust me, it will not be a cakewalk and so every match will be a contest and I do hope the Wahine can pull it out……I think Long Beach & UCSB will definitely be tough opponents, also.
Dave Shoji has been doing this for 39 years and 1,114 wins later I’m sure he, the rest of the coaches, the whole team, Kaleo, Jimbo, Kayla, the Japan assistant and maybe even the ball girls and floor wipers knows all about the target on the teams back.

What I miss the most from the Klum Gym days was the coaches who claimed the “Hawaii effect” that is two tough games played back to back nights in Klum Gym then they’d go back “home” and lose one or two there. So if they were having a good season, bam out the door and limp to NCAA. Of course, no one ever wondered how Coach Dave and the Wahine managed to win doing the opposite (playing games on the continent then returning to Hawaii). But now, it’s “great experience for the team to play in Hawaii’s atmosphere”, etc. etc. I think that Coach Dave is well versed in keeping his teams/players focused he’s done it in the BW, WAC and last year back in the BW. He will do it again, target or not the other teams will have to outplay the Wahine. Not saying they can’t but it’s easier said than done. Go Wahine!

From an RPI perspective, I’m glad UH is no longer part of the Old WAC.
Good article on Adora Anae in today’s paper. It says she committed to Utah, but Hawaii is still recruiting her. She also seems to be having a difficult time deciding if she should stay home or go away.
We’ll see where she eventually signs with in November I guess.
I think Anae is a nice player. I think she would be a redshirt her first year and has potential to be real good in 3-4 years. but with Granato and Castillo possibly on board I hope uh goes for an outside hitter transfer with experience instead and ready to play right away next season.

As far as I can tell Castillo hasn’t played in a match so far this year. She is on the roster but isn’t listed in any of the stats for any of their matches for this season.
I heard she’s been was wearing a brace on her right leg. A 6’2 freshman named Lexi Sun has replaced her.
Lexi Sun is the next logan tom apparently she touches 10’5 already as a freshman and passes and plays defense very well.

It’s really surprising to me that Robins-Hardy hasn’t committed anywhere yet with signing day just over a month away. She’s a big talent.
Really impressed with Mckenna Granato’s powerful armswing and she can dig and pass pretty good too, Shoji will do wonders with her.
