Combined efforts

Athletes’ Performance is planning to set up a combine-like event in which former Warriors Aaron Brown, Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga will work out in front of NFL scouts.

In previous years, UH held a pro day at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. With the switch in UH coaching staffs, the agents for those three players are using their ties with Athletes’ Performance (which trains its players at the Home Depot Center) to hold the workout in early March. Other seniors from the Warriors’ 2011 team are invited to participate.

In the past, UH held its pro days a few weeks before the draft. But this workout, which is separate from any pro day that new head coach Norm Chow might plan, will be held a week after the NFL Scouting Combine in February to give scouts more time to evaluate the performances of the UH players.

Offensive lineman Dustin Adams said he is “definitely committed” to signing with the Warriors.

After Greg McMackin reached a release agreement to not coach the Warriors in 2012, it was decided that UH only would honor prospects with signed commitments (such as scholarship agreements). But last week, head coach Norm Chow said he would honor the offer to Adams. Adams, who also is being recruited by Washington and Iowa State, told the WB this morning that he plans to play for the Warriors.

Cornerback Mike Edwards began therapy after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder in Cleveland. He said the rehabilitation period is between four and five months. He said he returns to Hawaii this weekend.

Lewis Powell and Phil Rauscher today officially begin their jobs as Warrior assistant coaches. They have passed the background checks that UH now requires of all new hires.

The Warrior volleyball team has completed double-practice days. They will practice today in preparation for Thursday’s opener against UC San Diego. This is the first time the Warriors will open the season against an MPSF opponent. The Outrigger Invitational is next week.

it’s a new era and the future looks bright!

time to pound the pavement new coaches!

    go warriors!

  4. RedZone January 3, 2012 8:56 am

ST do the new coaches have to go thru the process where they take the test before they are able to recruit?

  5. ai-eee-soos January 3, 2012 8:57 am

    GO, Warriors.

  6. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 8:58 am

Everyone who recruits has to pass the recruiting test.

By the way, it is an open-book test.

  7. (Jesse) James January 3, 2012 8:58 am

Good morning Tsaikos…woo hoo top ten!!!

  8. (Jesse) James January 3, 2012 8:59 am

Hope everyone had a Happy New Year!!!

  9. NYUH January 3, 2012 8:59 am

With MWC and Chow it’s definitely going to be a new era. Bitchin’ time is over (talking to myself) and support the new regime as no doubt it is make or break time for the UH football program.

  10. ai-eee-soos January 3, 2012 9:01 am

    GREAT news.

” … Offensive lineman Dustin Adams said he is “definitely committed” to signing with the Warriors. … ”

    per ST’s header, just updated.

  11. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 9:02 am

    Morning all!

  12. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 9:07 am

Dustin Adams is “definitely” a good addition to the Warrior Program!

4-5 months rehab for Mike Edwards? That means he’ll miss Spring Camp. … hope his rehab goes well and he can rebuild his strength and stamina by late Summer.

  13. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:09 am

Hate them test, I even fail the open book ones.

  14. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:09 am

    A true Warrior in Adams!!!

  15. RedZone January 3, 2012 9:09 am

Alright welcome Dustin Adams. I hope UH administers the test to the new coaches today so that they can get out there and recruit.

  16. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:10 am

Get well soon Mike Edwards we need you, and thanks for being a Warrior.

  17. mikesmith January 3, 2012 9:12 am

ST, who else in the the football office showing the new guys around?

  18. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:12 am

Never seem to have the right books…only the right covers lol

  19. mikesmith January 3, 2012 9:13 am

ST when do you think we will hear any news on other coaches? DC? OC?

  20. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 9:14 am

While probably not the intent, the test is protection for a school.

Don’t want a coach exceeding call limits.

I think the NCAA allows e-mails but not texting. That’s supposed to change soon.

  21. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:14 am

Take those coaches to Kahuku and pay a visit to Titas and ask for Uncle Junior and he can introduce them to all the boys down dat side.

  22. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 9:16 am

    mikesmith

Not today, as I understand it.

There should be some hires this week.

Because the openings have been advertised since McMackin’s departure, there’s no need for committees or BOR approval to hire assistants. It’s a matter of finding out how much money is available. Chow should be getting a budget soon, if not today.

  23. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:17 am

Go strong after Wiley the Kahuku RB! Still has some interest in UH I heard. Hope it’s true!

  24. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 9:17 am

    Bugaz:

Ah, if you would take the open-book test, you would know the coaches need to wait until tomorrow to go to Kahuku.

  25. mikesmith January 3, 2012 9:17 am

Thanks ST, do you know who is in the mix? Thom Kaumeyer still in there for DC?

  26. tommui January 3, 2012 9:18 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

The new coaches may know the way to San Jose, but do they know the way to Laie?

Hope they made appointments to talk story with the coaches at Kahuku, Kamehameha, Punahou, etc just to introduce themselves, show face and pave the way for Coach Chow when he gets back.

  27. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 9:19 am

I know they’re going after Lakalaka.

    And the Kahuku LB.

    Hmm. Is Benji Kemoeatu available?

  28. al January 3, 2012 9:21 am

so tomw is the end of the dead period. would that mean at 12:01 am tonight you could camp out on a doorstep?

  29. al January 3, 2012 9:21 am

so tomw is the end of the dead period. would that mean at 12:01 am tonight you could camp out on a doorstep?

  30. (Jesse) James January 3, 2012 9:22 am

    More good news…Woo Hoo.

So, ST, when is Coach Chow supposed to be arriving in Hawaii?

  31. al January 3, 2012 9:22 am

    st…those are great starting points.

lakalaka is a perfect fit at running back. he could become a four year starter.

fonua is going to be the next best lb out of the north shore.

  32. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:23 am

ST IMO can read so open book test no help hahaha

I get me seven year old son for text for me

  33. d1shima January 3, 2012 9:23 am

Hope they can find their way to Waianae, too.

  34. al January 3, 2012 9:24 am

bugaz…slow down bull. aofaga wily is only a junior.

  35. d1shima January 3, 2012 9:24 am

Good to hear about Dustin Adams

  36. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:26 am

Yes getting Lakalaka would be big! No to UCLA!!! There’s a new sheriff in town, well just not Manoa yet. He still in somebody else town for now.

  37. al January 3, 2012 9:26 am

d1…if you are thinking that dtackle in waianae…he, too is but a junior.

in fact, next year there are a bevy of top prospects all over the state.

  38. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:28 am

So you telling me we shouldn’t be going after juniors? Das part the problem cause da mainland guys do. I know he is a Junior. No slow down pedal to da medal!!! Lol

  39. d1shima January 3, 2012 9:29 am

    al,

Hear what you saying but in the case of those two, Hawaii won’t be the first to come-a-callin’!

  40. AlaWai January 3, 2012 9:30 am

The acid test for the coaches will be to see how many private school players they can get to stay home.

  41. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:30 am

The Koehler kid out of SL was offered in 8th grade!

  42. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:31 am

Show um the love early and stay on um

  43. Bugaz January 3, 2012 9:32 am

Best of luck Warriors trying to take it to the next level

  44. AlaWai January 3, 2012 9:34 am

Coaches should also be going to HS basketball games to look at potential TE’s.

  45. (Jesse) James January 3, 2012 9:34 am

Seems like we are starting on the right foot in 2012

  46. A-House January 3, 2012 9:37 am

Dustin Adams, welcome to the Warrior Ohana!

Got many new uncles and aunties looking forward to your many contributions on and off the field.

  47. A-House January 3, 2012 9:38 am

Welcome, welcome to Coaches Powell and Rauscher!

    go gettum bull!

  48. A-House January 3, 2012 9:40 am

agree with d1 and bugaz – show’em all the love even if they are only in intermediate school.

jus no foget da outside islands cause get plenty talent – Loeffler (sp) and Shigematsu are good examples!!!

  49. al January 3, 2012 9:46 am

bugaz…no, no, no. we have to go after these kids in their sophmore years or earlier if we can id them that early. this is a no brainer.

just saying that right now we have little time to recruit for this year and therefore, the emphasis and point of attack will be for this year’s recruiting class.

  50. al January 3, 2012 9:50 am

d1…totally agree about the kalaepohaku 2.

hopefully, we can convince that last correa boy to stay home like the rest of the family. i am hoping that he listens to his mama.

saw that koehler kid a month ago. wow. he is a beast. i hope he chooses a different path than his older brother and stays home.

  51. al January 3, 2012 9:51 am

koehler looks like the next nfl bound center from st. louis.

  52. mikesmith January 3, 2012 9:56 am

So many things have to come together for recruits, size, speed, play making ability, and most of all GRADES. Many kids that everyone brings up in these blogs will not qualify so just wait and see. Didn’t the Koehler kid have a brother that was going to the NFL also? When to Arizona I think, how long did he last there and where is he now?

  53. urbankid January 3, 2012 9:58 am

QB Ikaika Woolsey is on a plane to Hawaii as we speak

  54. Mamba January 3, 2012 10:07 am

Dustin Adams has been accepted to UH. Him and I are good friends and I was on here reading about the new coach and seen this.

  55. koakane January 3, 2012 10:25 am

    morning check in

    howzit

  56. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 10:34 am

    urbankid:

Thanks for the update. Hmm. Should we call the governor?

  57. HawaiiMongoose January 3, 2012 10:35 am

Mamba, thanks for the good news about Dustin.

  58. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 10:36 am

It’s going to be an interesting staff, I imagine.

Chow said he wants to get a bunch of young no-social-life grinders.

  59. Pride. January 3, 2012 10:36 am

Wonder if Lewis Powell’s can speak Samoan? That’s always a small plus with parents of Samoan recruits.

  60. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 10:38 am

I think we all talked about identifying talent early. It seems as if Chow is seeking some coaches he thinks are under-the-radar, up-and-coming guys.

    People have to start somewhere.

    Why not here?

  61. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 10:38 am

    Pride:

I think he’s Tongan, if I’m not mistaken.

  62. Pride. January 3, 2012 10:39 am

Hmmmm. Do I qualify? Not young, but nooooooo social life.

Unfortunately, don’t know much about coaching football. Just another monday morning quarterback.

  63. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 10:40 am

At yesterday’s volleyball practice, coach Jeff Hall was speaking to middle blocker Shane Welch in Spanish.

I asked if Welch knew Spanish, Hall said, “I don’t know. We’ll find out.”

Sounds like the thinking of the first person to see whether lobsters were edible.

  64. Pride. January 3, 2012 10:40 am

#61 – Oh! Powell is a Tongan name. Missed that.

  65. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2012 10:41 am

    Pride:

    You’re young at heart.

And since the heart is what matters most, I think you’d qualify.

  66. Pride. January 3, 2012 10:45 am

Wow, Mike Smith got hired by Wazzu two weeks ago, and then got hired back to the Jets as a the LB coach. It’s almost like watching tennis.

Mike Smith was another grad assistant.

  67. al January 3, 2012 10:48 am

    thats what i heard, too.

  68. al January 3, 2012 10:50 am

    tongan that is.

  69. Wassup January 3, 2012 10:52 am

ST-#56 Too funny. Didn’t think you would jump on that one too.

  70. Pride. January 3, 2012 10:52 am

Well Mr. Tsai if it’s the heart that matters, then we would have a coaching staff full of Tsaikos. We’d spend a whole year trying to decide who the head coach would be. Of course Jason would want to be the OC.

  71. al January 3, 2012 10:54 am

st…i guess vacation’s over. you get to cover two sports now.

sounds like the mvb is not short on talent inspite of losing umlauft and walker. good to see competition at all positions.

i wonder how long will it be to keep guys like averill from cracking the starting lineup?

  72. al January 3, 2012 10:56 am

i heard that they went looking for mini-me governor, but, he got lost in a crowd of japanese tourists. apparently he in fact is shorter than the average japanese.

  73. al January 3, 2012 10:57 am

i thought that cayetano was our shortest governor, but, he dwarfs little neil.

  74. bigislandkurt January 3, 2012 10:58 am

    Young, Tongan, talented, up-and-coming coach.

    Sounds like Inoke Funaki.

And let’s not forget, having LDS-ties sure gives us an in to the north shore like we never had before.

    BIK

  75. Kevin January 3, 2012 11:00 am

Cayetano runs, he just might win.

    Rail = pau.

    Fireworks ban = pau.

    YAY!!!! SALMAT MANONG!!!!!

  76. al January 3, 2012 11:00 am

i once was having dinner at a manoa eatery and neil runs in to pick up some takeout, i hope he wasn’t using campaign funds, this was not a cheap eat diner. he walked by me and the boss. i swear she was much taller than he even though we were seated.

  77. al January 3, 2012 11:01 am

kazz…no forget, no chicken fight raids, too!!!

  78. al January 3, 2012 11:01 am

    kazz…i think he’ll win.

  79. 808Bowler January 3, 2012 11:02 am

Welcome Dustin Adams!!!!! Not many honest guys out there who honor their commitment now days. Esp after a coaching change and being recruited by bcs schools. Shows great character!!!!!

  80. al January 3, 2012 11:03 am

…and mufi will be in congress.

  81. Bulla January 3, 2012 11:07 am

exciting times for Manoa and the lower campus….good luck Coach Chow and gang…

    GO WARRIORS

    GO WILDCATS

  82. Wassup January 3, 2012 11:09 am

Governor at yesterday’s airport greeting session “photo op.” – “new coaches, on behalf of the ‘little people’, I’d like to welcome you to Hawai’i”.

  83. A-House January 3, 2012 11:23 am

Hey, if the coaches can show “love” to potential recruits, why not the Gov and UHAD doing the same for incoming coaches?

    Is this precedant setting?

Does this indicate “more” support to UH athletics from the Gov’s office despite the “autonomy” granted to UH? Liked the Gov’s statement on Leahy & Leahy about a separate line item in the State budget for UH “travel expenses” – I will presume he meant only for football.

Wonder if he will change his mind if MWC and C-USA merge and UH gets stuck with travel expenses for C-USA teams? Heck, I would negotiate for C-USA teams to pay Hawaii’s travel expenses to points east of the Mississippi.

  84. A-House January 3, 2012 11:25 am

    al:

are your “little birdies” taking ST’s statement of no news of recruits for 2 weeks to heart?

  85. jm2375 January 3, 2012 11:27 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Welcome to the new coaches and new players.

al-san – so, will we see you at the volleyball games this year?? You can join in the “conversation”. 🙄 😆

2 more days till Warrior Volleyball!! Woohoo!!

    GO WARRIORS!

  86. 婚姻挽回 January 3, 2012 11:28 am

    I would just like to let ufo know how much I learn from your website Bookmarked book ; be back fast for some more good articles;

  87. jm2375 January 3, 2012 11:28 am

Mr. A-house – C-USA teams should pay for travel to all points east of the easternmost MWC school.

  88. A-House January 3, 2012 11:36 am

    jm:

gotta agree with that – next time any of us see Jim D perhaps we should mention how unfair the MWC Commish making UH pay for all football travel.

  89. mikesmith January 3, 2012 11:38 am

ST, no word on who is left from the previous staff? Tony, Rolo, Lumpkin? GAs? Bianca? Are they all working side by side with the new guys not know what their future is? Awkward. Shoot, coach Chow should just let them go so they have time to find a new gig while all the movement is happening. Oh, and I am not the Mike Smith at the Jets, common name. LOL

  90. mikesmith January 3, 2012 11:39 am

“Not Knowing what their future is”

  91. mikesmith January 3, 2012 11:41 am

Here is a question I did not hear anyone asking? So we have a new DL coach, Powell, and TE coach, Roush, when do any of the other coaches start work? Next week when coach Chow gets here? Don’t we host some recruits that week? Seems like we are behind a little bit.

  92. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 11:45 am

I think our GA’s have used up their two years of eligibility and must now apply for coaching positions. Like everyone else, they’ll have to wait in line for interviews and such. If they haven’t finished up their degrees, it may be in their best interests to do so ASAP.

  93. LizKauai (bonafide) January 3, 2012 11:54 am

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO VOLLEYBOWS!!!

  94. 808Bowler January 3, 2012 11:58 am

9 months till season starts up again………

  95. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 11:59 am

    mikesmith,

I suppose Coach Chow and his two assistants and players will do the hosting till he interviews and selects the rest of his staff over the course of this month. If he’s not worried about, then I’m not going to fret about it, either.

  96. Da Punchbowl Kid January 3, 2012 11:59 am

Nice to see Dustin will be sticking around.

Welcome to Powell and Rauscher. Now comes the fun part. 😉

Good luck to all Warrior NFL aspirants. I hope we see at least those three mentioned above in camps, if not drafted.

Healing prayers for Mike Edward’s shoulder surgery. Been there. Did that. Not fun!

  97. Pomai January 3, 2012 12:02 pm

#31 – al – sorry al must disagree with you on this one, Joey Iosefa will be the starting RB for the next three years baring injury, you can take that to the bank.

  98. huh? January 3, 2012 12:03 pm

    Da Punchbowl Kid

    What’s the difference between;

    Healing prayers and healing energy?

And, are you really a kid?

  99. al January 3, 2012 12:05 pm

pomai…i accept your challenge. joey iosefa will be the fullback in our new alignment and not the running back.

  100. al January 3, 2012 12:09 pm

the little gov at the airport was not just a publicity stunt (pun intended) but it was my guess that his boss kicked him out of the house.

  101. al January 3, 2012 12:10 pm

jm0411…perhaps. of course it will depend upon my ride being available. and if that triple choco cake shows up.

  102. al January 3, 2012 12:12 pm

ms…didn’t tsai mention that we’d see some asst coach news as early as this week once the budget was determined.

  103. Bugaz January 3, 2012 12:14 pm

Full back tail back both running backs just full back used more as a blocker or short yardage pounder up the middle

  104. d1shima January 3, 2012 12:17 pm

Badgers’ OL averaged 6-5, 323 yesterday. (and very mobile, thank you very much)

Replicate that in Manoa and would it really matter who totes the rock?

  105. Fashion Police January 3, 2012 12:17 pm

How about ‘dem chrome helmets Oregon displayed in yesterday’s Rose Bowl game?

I would suggest they keep that helmet design with the wings and put the “O” in the back for all the other helmets as the standard. Like it when birdie birdie teams put the wings on the front like the eagles of Philly and of Nanakuli.

weeeeeeo weeeeeeo we weeeeeeeeeo weeeeeeeo wup wup

    -fp

  106. Bugaz January 3, 2012 12:19 pm

Budget? Didn’t coach say money is not an object, or something like that? This is not a BCS program and it will be an issue! Wish him the best, and I have faith he can do it.

  107. J-Dog January 3, 2012 12:19 pm

I agree with Bugaz on the Joey Iosefa usage.

Of course it’s all just speculation at this point as we have a nice crop of young RB’s to choose from. All with different styles of running to bring to the table at Coach Chow’s disposal.

  108. d1shima January 3, 2012 12:19 pm

    …and a pair of TE’s who averaged 6-4, 250#

  109. J-Dog January 3, 2012 12:20 pm

Any word on Justin Turner and Lavaka? Still not signed?

  110. Bugaz January 3, 2012 12:22 pm

I feel Iosefa will play a big part for the next three years, but having a stable of great backs is necessary for injuries and different looks. If we can get um, bring um in or else you may have to defend against them some day.

  111. papajoe2 January 3, 2012 12:23 pm

Good thing the little gov not getting real mad at you guys for joking about him being vertically challenged. If he was the the violent type he would throw an overhand right and hit you guys right in the knee.

  112. papajoe2 January 3, 2012 12:27 pm

4 teams from the MWC has to travel to Hawaii every year at UH’s expense. UH has to travel 4 times too to the MWC schools every year at our expense too. I would be good but not realistic if the MWC or schools pay for Hawaii’s trip too. We still have non conference away games that we have to pay for too.

  113. Da Punchbowl Kid January 3, 2012 12:31 pm

    huh? –

Healing prayers are to ask God (in my case, anyway) to help with healing someone. As a Christian, I pray in the name of Jesus. Healing prayers and healing energy have a kind of symbiotic realtionship. Healing energy will take many many different forms, I imagine. Both are useful in seeking healing.

I started with the nic when this blog began. It could be said that I am still very much a kid at heart. Way to old to be a kid in the literal sense.

  114. papajoe2 January 3, 2012 12:32 pm

Why is the SA calling it Hawaii Island? Just call it the Big Island. If you from here, you know what we talking about. Unless the writers are not from here. Even if you not from here you should know what they talking about. Or how about the island of Hawaii? To me sounds better than Hawaii Island.

  115. Da Punchbowl Kid January 3, 2012 12:37 pm

I’ll say one thing for the Guv, for a braddah his age, he can pound some iron in the weight room. Used to see him at the Y pretty regularly a couple of years ago.

Let’s hope he starts throwing his weight around for the sake of UH athletics. 😉

Safe to say, the biggest question going into next season will be… …wait for it… wait for it…

the Offensive line. Sounds too familiar don’t it? 😆 We have some promising young guys, though.

  117. Bowwar January 3, 2012 12:42 pm

Is NaKoa and the boosters contributing to Asst. Coaches salaries? I think the We-ah man said that they paid for part of Shaw’s salary…UH is far behind in providing reasonable asst. coach salaries especially if they want someone with background and credentials.

  118. Bowwar January 3, 2012 12:47 pm

If anyone saw the Stanford offense, I think that’s exactly what Chow wants to employ here. However, its really “pound em” football and requires a big offensive line and quick running backs. Not really exciting, but more traditional football like the Big 10 stuff.

  119. Stretch January 3, 2012 12:48 pm

#106 – Bugaz – Coach Chow was referring to HIS salary regarding the money not being an object.

  120. RedZone January 3, 2012 12:52 pm

We need to find a couple of centers going into the spring. We used to at least have some projected ones. I don’t know if we have any this year.

  134. Kevin January 3, 2012 1:07 pm

Keep asking boosters to pay for coaching salaries and they better start getting the club’s officers and whatnot onto the state’s payroll.

Salaries come with the job, the state/UH is the hiring and employing entity and are responsible for financing it’s employees.

BOOSTERS , b-o-o-s-t a program’s budget, NOT pay for it.

By now, we should know that all of UH’s 19, soon to be 20 athletic programs need a boost, they do NOT need money that is intended to SUPPLEMENT budgets for the improvement of athletic and academic goals to replace monies that must be allocated by the entity that is supposed to be responsible for it’s basic needs.

Athletic scholarships thru the regular semester sessions and coaching salaries (including raises) are things that should be off-limits as far as booster clubs are concerned when it comes to needs.

  135. Kevin January 3, 2012 1:08 pm

People donate money to their favorite programs in hopes of IMPROVING it, NOT trying to ensure it’s basic financial needs at the minimum.

  136. Couch potato January 3, 2012 1:08 pm

  140. Da Punchbowl Kid January 3, 2012 1:20 pm

Straight from Rev. Bulla’s lips: Stutz to be receivers coach at Weber. The UH coaching tree continues to grow.

  142. A.M. January 3, 2012 1:28 pm

Coach Chow is a smart guy – he’ll tailor his offense to fit his personnel. If we don’t got the behemoths, he’ll find another way. (He ain’t gonna force a square peg into a round hole.) There’s always a way – just look at Oregon’s lean & speed team & the results they get.

  143. mikey January 3, 2012 1:32 pm

#97 Pomai– Joey will have a good chance as starting RB coming this spring. Chow uses 2 RB.

On TE would be interesting to see if Gib allow both Wiseman and Hauns both at 6-7 with great pair of hands? I would think Wiseman will have a better future as NFL TE rather than at BB.

JJ use to raid the UH Basketball teams for DE

    aloha Tsaikos,

DPK is correct, Craig STUTZMANN was introduced as the WR Coach at Weber State University today by former Michigan State and now Weber State Head Coach John L. Smith.

The Hawaii boys on the team, especially the Crusaders from Kalaepohaku were ecstatic to say the least. The Hawaii connection will remain for the 808 and Coach McBride’s legacy will continue…..

On OL I see that we have on roster coming back are 4 6-5, 4 6-4, 4 6-3 = 12 OLinemen. Don’t know how many will make the 2012 Spring Roster.

I see that we’ve offered 4 **** OT Jeremiah Poutasi at 6-5 315 just visited Hawaii this pass month but has a high interest in Utah. Hope Chow can bring him in.

Another OG Dustin Adams at 6-5 290 has already verbally committed to Hawaii. of which Chow has already honored for the coming 2012 year.

Someone on earlier post mention the importance of getting a Great DC and OL Coach.

I would like to see as I mention on earlier post Keith Uperesa as OL coach who has a fantastic 18 year career record.

As for DC I like Chuck Bullough who I think has a great potential with 14 years of high level with top defense where ever he goes. His father – Henry Bullough is a NFL legend as “Doctor of Defense”

What more can you ask? He has to live up to his father what more pressure than that?

Hopefully both could work out with given contract.

56 consecutive winning seasons gets ya noticed by yer peers…

Owing to its lengthy record of sustained success, the Linfield College football program is profiled in a cover story as part of the January issue of Coach and Athletic Director magazine.

The reasons for Linfield’s remarkable record of 56 consecutive winning seasons is among the topics covered in the multi-story package. The magazine also contains sidebars discussing the football program’s stated ethos of “Team, Attitude, Excellence and Class,”

RedZone. The next center in line is Kody Afusia. He was recruited two years ago as a center. But you are right. This position is thin with the departure of London Sapolu and Sila Lefiti.

  165. bleedgreen January 3, 2012 2:14 pm

Da biggest question is how quickly the team will adjust to the new coaches and the new offensive and defensive schemes. On offense, the biggest puka is running back and tight end. Joey is not enough and no mo TE yet with experience at that position.

  166. mikey January 3, 2012 2:16 pm

Chuck Bullough as our new DC? 14 years of coaching experience

Played at Mich State as a LB had a 175 T record set at Michgan State

He was drafted 8th Round by Philadelhia Eagles

    Coaching Carreer:

1997-1998 Started coaching at Michigan State (Assist.) DB 1997 LB 1998

1999-2003 Chicago Bears (Assist.) 2001 HC was named NFL Coach of the Year 13 -3 record He tutor Brian Urlacher and other great Bears LB to All Pro.

    2004 Lake Forest (LB/Sp. Teams)

2005 Western Michigan (LB) Was the Biggest turnaround year & HC was named Coach of the Year.

    2006-2008 UCLA (LB) 2006 9th in nation 1st Pac 10; 2007 14th rush D nation 29th total Def

2009-2010 UCLA (DC/LB) 2008 again excel as LB group promoted to DC.

    2011 Cleveland Browns (Assist.)

With him as assit coach his HC was named ‘COTY’ twice! and as Chuck a DC I can just see it now “Norm Chow as Coach of the Year” if not this coming year sometime in near future.

He Recruits heavily in California ‘CIF Southern Section’ which is latent with talent.

  167. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 2:18 pm

I figure if the the Oline can give the QB adequate time, we will pass more.. if not, we will run more… either way we will win more.

  168. Derek January 3, 2012 2:23 pm

Poutasi has verbally committed to Utah. If Chow wants to have a ballanced attack he needs a dependable and tough running back. I agree Iosefa could end up a fullback since he’s a good blocker and can do the job as a short yardage man. He can also catch some passes too. I think Will Gregory will get a shot. Jackson seems like he can run well, but he got hurt at times.

The jury is still out on John Lister. Jared Leaf should get a shot in the spring to see how he can do. Chow should bring in at least 1 or 2 running backs. I am looking forward to seeing Ellis Henderson if he will join the program in January as a grayshirt. I thnk we’ve got too many QBs. Graves, Spain, Shutter, Higgins, Godfrey, Woolsey. Graham is redshirting, plus Chow might bring in 2 more QBs. The numbers say we can’t keep them all. Only Graves has had meaningful game time experience. Shutter has had only mop up plays if at all. Godfrey played quite a bit at New Mexico so he has some game experience. I can’t say I’m excitied with this group as nobody is Holy Grail material. We’ll see what happens when Chow coaches them up.

Unless Chow can find a reliable QB, it could be a long season in 20912. Plus, if the OL doesn’t improve a bunch, the QB will be running for his life.

The kicker cost Stanford and Georgia their games. No excuse for Georgia as their kicker is an All-American kicker. The Stanford kicker is a freshman. Too much pressure in a big game. All 3 were pulled meaning he got too quick and the adrenaline rush was too much. That’s why I always believe that teams should try to get a TD as best they can and going for a field goal shoud be a last resort. Stanford had lots of time to go for the TD, but they ran running plays and ran the clock down to try the field goal. I would have trusted Andrew Luck to make plays and score a TD. He’s the best, right! I would never trust a kicker unless it is absolutely necessary to kick it. Always try to make a touchdown.

  169. mikey January 3, 2012 2:30 pm

    On a side note:

#158 Couch potato: i don’t think the Chow Dynasty will last 56 seasons.

According to Chinese legends Zhou Dynasty (lost in translation Chow in America) lasted 800 years. I went to China this past October (missed 2 Warriors Games ) to see the Terracotta Warriors buried in protected tomb. These Warriors may have been a replacement for the actual people who had previously been buried with the rulers.

  170. Pride. January 3, 2012 2:34 pm

#170 – That should be, couldn’t come to an agreement

  172. mikey January 3, 2012 2:40 pm

To continue with my #166 I also like to see:

Adrian Klemm (awesome recruiter for SMU and OL coach) who was recently hired by Jim Mora at UCLA. Klemm is a three time Super Bowl Champion with the New England Patriots and was named the 2010 RIVALS, FoxSports & Scout.com Conference Recruiter of the year, and the National Non BCS Recruiter of the Year with SMU.

Klemm like Chuck recruits heavily out of Southern California.

I would like to see Klemm come back home like HC Chow a full circle home to Warriors!

  173. mikey January 3, 2012 2:41 pm

    Pride Ahhhh.. That’s too bad…

  174. mikey January 3, 2012 2:43 pm

I think NC should take the OC position and free up the $$ for padded DC hire?

  175. Pride. January 3, 2012 2:44 pm

Not sure if we can pay Klemm what he’s getting at UCLA. At this point, Klemm probably needs to do what’s best for his career and family. That could mean different things to different people.

  176. bigislandkurt January 3, 2012 2:46 pm

“Hawaii Island,” to distinguish from “Hawaii da state.” That is why nobody uses “Maui Island,” or “Kauai Island.” If we just say “Hawaii,” when referring to the great and majestic island, then everybody would be confused. I think it was the kanaks at UH who coined the term “Hawaii Island.” I use Big Island casually with talking with other Hawaii folks. If I’m talking to non-Hawaii folks, I use Hawaii Island.

    To each his own.

BIK (HIK in formal settings) 🙂

  177. Pride. January 3, 2012 2:47 pm

  189. (Jesse) James January 3, 2012 3:07 pm

#176 BIK…Good explanation. The funny thing is that a lot of people I know in my neck of the woods who are from the “Big Island” get very upset when we say Big Island…and have been pressing us to say “Hawaii Island” or “County of Hawaii”…..just like using the term “outer islands” to people on Maui, Oahu would be an “outer island” same goes for people from Oahu, Kauai would be an “outer island”. It’s all relative. However, many people from Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and the Big Island feel that that term is Oahu centric for some reason and now the term being used is “Neighbor Island”. I get scoldings from people from Maui and the Big Island when I say “outer islands”…..LOL

  190. Kevin January 3, 2012 3:09 pm

I think more times than not when a ball is kicked in between the pipes, the team is up usually by three points and it’s crucial for a kicker to make sure that happens.

But the real point is the QB play, if our QB can make his reads and make the throw, we have a chance to get a completion.

    Today is Tuesday.

208:Joey looked out of position early in the season but as it went on He Looked more and more like a future RB…He just needs to hold on to the ball and he will end of as a 1K yard rusher before his career ends

  209. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 4:13 pm

BIK… except that they both fumble the ball some.

  210. Bugaz January 3, 2012 4:37 pm

Iosefa freshman running back transition from QB almost 600 yards 5 yards per carry average behind a devistaded oline…das pretty darn good if you ask me. I think he will be special when it’s all said and done.

  211. Bugaz January 3, 2012 4:39 pm

He may never get to 1K yards but in Chows offense he may end up blocking for a couple of them.

  212. Garret January 3, 2012 4:43 pm

Penn State is trying a 3rd time to get Chris Petersen…his first 2 “no”s weren’t enough for them I guess.

What the heck; third time’s a charm, right?

After two failed attempts to woo Chris Petersen away from Boise State, Penn State will reportedly make yet another run at the coach. According to a tweet from CBSSports‘ Charlie Casserly, the Nittany Lions are going to take a shot at a coach who has spent the vast majority of his coaching career to the left of the Rockies and has shown no desire to leave the Broncos for jobs in locales east, west, north or south of Boise.

    http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/02/penn-state-to-make-another-run-at-chris-petersen-roman-a-finalist/

  213. Garret January 3, 2012 4:45 pm

Not coincidentally, the Idaho State Board of Education is meeting and the ONLY thing they are discussing is their approval of Petersen’s next raise.

Boise State football coach Chris Petersen’s salary is the only item on the agenda for a special State Board of Education meeting Wednesday.

He has a five-year, rolling contract that will pay him $1.625 million in 2012 with a $100,000 raise each year thereafter. The contract is extended by a year each time the Broncos win at least eight games. Petersen is 73-6 in six seasons as the Broncos’ head coach.

  214. Kevin January 3, 2012 4:50 pm

I think Penn State’s track record shows a history of not understanding the concept of “no means no”…

    Yeah I said it.

  215. Bugaz January 3, 2012 4:51 pm

    Ouch

  216. Garret January 3, 2012 5:07 pm

Here are the details of Petersen’s new contract. An even more important thing to note is that Boise State pays its assistant coaches from a pool of $1.75 mil. Petersen also designates 10% of his contract to the assistants, so it looks like Boise State’s assistant coaches will make about $2 mil/year in total. Boise State has always paid its assistant coaches well, which is crucial for their success…if UH keeps its assistant coach’s salaries low, that really will limit the Warrior program.

Boise State and football coach Chris Petersen have agreed to a new five-year contract that will pay him at least $2 million per year.

  217. shorebreak January 3, 2012 5:24 pm

The main roadblock to immediate success will be the budjet; that’s why the new HC is looking to young coaches

to fill spots. I hope he has a creative, innovative approach; the only other solution is raising ticket prices or having 45 thousand plus show up for the games. i hope that happens

    Shorebreak…

When I heard how much Chow was going to make, I kind of sighed and realized that our assistant coaches will not be mid-to-high tier but rather position coaches ready to move up. The DC may be someone who is good but willing to take a lower pay for the opportunity live and work in Hawaii — he’d have to make less than the HC. I can’t see us having an OC, I think Coach Chow will take that position for his first year, at least… maybe a QB/WR coach (like Rolo). If the wins come, maybe he’ll be able to negotiate more.

    mih . . .

Chow needs to hit the 25,000 ticket mark for a bonus per his contract.

But, if 22k were sold last year he has a good chance at the bonus.

  230. Kevin January 3, 2012 6:36 pm

I would have included a 75,000.00 bonus for defeating a nationally ranked opponent top 25 on national TV, 90,000 top 15, 120,000 top 10.

20,000.00 for win against nationally ranked opponent in the Top 25 overall in a non-nationally televised game.

    So, Carter Chow… any relation?

  236. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 7:59 pm

Ah with his bonuses, his salary doesn’t look all that bad. With an exciting brand of football, a good winning season, the first two season ticket tiers are achievable.. that would bring him up to $700… add #4, 5, 6 and 7 and he’ll at least be in the 800K range.

  237. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:03 pm

Dick Tomey tells Hadden that only 1 coach will be returning… who do you guys think that might be?

  249. krump1_AKA_protector January 3, 2012 8:25 pm

I think it’s ridiculous that Coach Chow will get $75K for hitting 25,000 in attendance. How low a bar does UH have to set? It should be more like $25K for hitting 30K, $50K if he gets to 35K, and should only get $75K if there are 40,000+ okoles in those disappointingly empty seats. Essentially, you’re just tossing him $75,000 for virtually doing nothing; what kind of motivation is that?

  250. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:25 pm

    BigHiloFan2:

    g’night bro!

  251. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:27 pm

    krump1_AKA_protector:

If UH only sold 20k season tickets last season.. that’s a 5,000 seat bump… or 500,000~ 1,000,000 dollar increase.

  252. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:29 pm

Chow’s base is on the low end of the mid-major scale.. the first two incentives have to be somewhat easily attained and justifiable. Which these are. It amounts to less than a 10% commission on sales above the current baseline. That’s a low commission schedule.

  253. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:30 pm

At 40K in season tickets, he should be getting 1,000,000 in salary… but he won’t be. So UH gets a deal.

  254. rainbowfan January 3, 2012 8:39 pm

How come, with Mack’s success in 2010 (10-4 & WAC championship), season ticket sales weren’t better in 2011 ?

Too high prices and ppv, etc. ?

  255. Curt January 3, 2012 8:41 pm

NC will likely pick the assistant who is young, aggressive, and has no life other than football. Both Rolo and Tuioti are young. If either are married with kids, then they’ll have a life outside of football. I don’t know who is more aggressive and hardworking. I know Tony is a recruter. Rolo has knowledge of the R&S which NC may want to incorporate elements of. But if I had to guess, I’ll say it’s Tony da Tiger.

  256. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:48 pm

    rainbowfan:

The recession is still lingering on in Hawaii and we lost the bowl game against Tulsa … so we lost the momentum turning the corner… I think we should start to see more spending this year. People are gifting themselves again…justifying purchases with the “I deserve it” excuse. AND that’s the kind of thinking that it’s going to take for season tickets to get a boost.

  257. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:50 pm

I think Hawaii fans like a little smash mouth and razzle-dazzle type of football over the RnS. Yeah we like those long bombs and quick strike two minute drills, but we also like those double reverses and options plays that get the blood pumping and the temples bursting while laying everything out on the field in seeming slow motion.

  258. Curt January 3, 2012 8:52 pm

Though I’m disappointed that only one former assistant may be retained, I gotta put my trust in Stormin’ Norman. In Chow, we trust!

  259. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 8:55 pm

    Curt,

Except, Chow has already hired someone to coach the D-line. So that might mean, Rolo?

  260. cocobean January 3, 2012 8:57 pm

Both married. Tony six kids. Rolo two.

    Powell named d-line coach….

Keep both. Good PR move. Sell more season tix.

  261. Curt January 3, 2012 9:02 pm

From the desert and the Rockies to the shores of the Hawaiian islands, Stormin’ Norman, will lead our Warriors in battle. Go Warriors!

  262. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 9:03 pm

Either one will find jobs elsewhere but one will have to move off the islands. Too bad, really.

  263. Curt January 3, 2012 9:03 pm

    mih,

I would think the assistants can be moved around. We’ll see.

  264. Curt January 3, 2012 9:05 pm

From the “Where are they now” dept (especially for Midori7 😀 ):

Jon Hee ’03, was recently awarded the 10th Player Award for the Portland Sea Dogs (AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). Jon was a former University of Hawaii infielder. According to the Sea Dogs website, “Jon became a fan favorite for the Sea Dogs, and appeared in 98 games hitting at a .275 clip. He played at least ten games at four different infield positions and batted .311 through the first two months of the season.”

    From the MPI Alumni magazine

  269. Curt January 3, 2012 9:20 pm

What position offers did Rolo get at New Mexico St and Idaho?

  274. mikesmith January 3, 2012 10:05 pm

    272. BowBraddah,

If you are correct, good for Tony, 6 kids? That is a whole lot of dead presidents he needs for food.

  280. Curt January 3, 2012 10:33 pm

Thanks Guy in the office. Kind of a half step backward for Rolo with both positions. However if he excels as an OC, he could significantly raise his stock for his next job.

  281. madeinhawaii January 3, 2012 10:55 pm

Boise State: Head coach Chris Petersen has agreed to a new 5-year deal and $375,000 raise.

Oops.. I suppose that’s part of the new 5-year “over 2 million a year” contract that Garret referred to above. Wonder if we’ll ever get to that point where we proactively raise the pay of a successful coach before he can be spirited away? I guess we need to get one of those successful coaches first.
