Lee won't be retained

Assistant head coach Cal Lee has been told he will not be retained on the UH coaching staff after his contract expires on March 31.

Lee has been at UH for nine seasons, coaching linebackers and defensive ends. He was the Warriors’ defensive coordinator in 2008 and 2009, Greg McMackin’s first two seasons as UH head coach. Lee’s success at Saint Louis School is well-documented.

That leaves three coaches from the 2011 staff β€” offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, defensive line coach Tony Tuioti and director player personnel George Lumpkin. Head coach Norm Chow will interview those three next week.

Lewis Powell and Philip Rauscher begin their UH coaching careers on Monday.

* * * * * *

The Warriors have decided to honor quarterback Ikaika Woolsey’s scholarship offer.

In clearing the way for the new head coach, UH decided it only would honor prospects with signed commitments, such as grayshirts who inked scholarship agreements. Woolsey had made an oral commitment to join the Warriors in January, but did not sign a scholarship agreement (a pact that binds the school, but not the player, to a scholarship). After Norm Chow was named UH coach, it was decided to honor the agreement with Woolsey.

During the 2011 fall semester, Woolsey was enrolled at City College of San Francisco, but did not play for the Rams. Woolsey knew if he played for CCSF he would lose a year of NCAA eligibility. By joining UH in January, Woolsey will have five years to play four seasons and participate in five offseason programs.

* * * * *

David Graves will enter Chow’s first offseason program as the No. 1 quarterback, although the position will be contested during spring training.

* * * * *

It is not known if quarterback Stump Godfrey, who redshirted in the fall after transferring from New Mexico, has decided to return.

Good to know that UH will honor Ikaika Woolsey’s offer. Coach Chow had the option to pull back the offer so he must have seen enough in Woolsey to think that he could be productive in his offense.

I’m not sure if Stump fits into the pro-style offense that Coach Chow wants…but since he’s already transferred once he’s running out of eligibility and options. With Coach Chow bringing in QBs that he’s selected for his offense, Stump may be caught in a numbers game.

  5. WarriorNY December 30, 2011 6:01 am

I feel really bad for Stump. He took such a risk leaving NMS. He may need to change positions…

Interesting map that shows how much bowl money is being made in different areas of the country. It sure looks like the Eastern half of the US makes almost all of the bowl money and the schools in the West get the crumbs left over.

Note that all of the $22.3 mil payouts do not actually go to the school, that goes to the AQ conferences to be split among their schools. The $6.1 mil payouts go to the conferences that get a second team in a BCS bowl game. In other words, if this had been a year with 2 non-AQ teams in BCS bowl games, the second non-AQ team would have earned $6.1 mil for their conference.

If you look at the non-BCS bowl games, all of the bowl games that pay between $4.55 mil and $1.15 mil go to AQ conferences. The payouts to the MWC, WAC, and CUSA are mere fractions of what the bigger conferences get even when you take away the BCS bowl games.

there is no guarantee that the nfl pro bowl will remain in hawaii, and the state subsidizes it. why not subsidize the hawaii bowl if there is no pro bowl.

A good bowl is all about volunteers.

At the Sun Bowl, there are 10 volunteers (including Charlie Garcia, who is available 19 hours a day) to work with the media. That’s a lot considering there are only three out-of-town newspaper reporters here β€” from Hawaii, Atlanta and Salt Lake City.

There are dozens more helping each team.

    Garret – 2 things

one, how does that map compare to the student population nationwide? Given the number of institutions out East and the national balance of population, there may be less to this than meets the eye.

two, I have learned to ask a more important question. What is the “net” to the universities? Much of the “payout” gets set off against ticket guarantees. Nevada probably had a net loss from its bowl participation, given the few tickets it sold. I wonder, are the bowls ripping off the colleges? I know they don’t technically make a profit but if they give big salaries and bonuses to their execs and staff, why have them?

From the excellent article in today’s SA:

“The greatest gift a young man can give to his parents is seeing how proud they are to see their son play for the University of Hawaii. When they go out (after the game), I want them to see the big barbecues and the shirts that say, β€˜I am John’s mother.’ ” To me, that’s a payback to everything. I want them to have that experience.”

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid December 30, 2011 6:58 am

The quote I posted above is from the new HC, who says he will be the recruiting coordinator for Hawaii. Excellent.

When Chow spoke at the pressr announcing his hiring, I mentioned that you could almost feel the culture of UH Football beginning to change. Many things we’ve learned since then point to a paradigm shift in the program. I like what I’m seeing. These are exciting times.

Garret, good morning. if the hawaii bowl was to raise their level to $1.5 mil, the mwc would be very happy, but would the pac-12 be more than interested to fill the opposite slot?

    whitey,

If the Hawaii Bowl would raise its payout to $1.5 mil, they would get the Pac-12 back. The Pac-12 dumped the Hawaii Bowl because it was its lowest paying bowl game.

The New Mexico Bowl raised its payout from $750k to I think $1.25 mil for 2012 and got the Pac-12. $1.5 mil would be enough for the Pac-12 to come back to Hawaii…but where is that money going to come from?

  35. newbie December 30, 2011 7:23 am

I know they don’t technically make a profit but if they give big salaries and bonuses to their execs and staff, why have them?

    dcwarrior,

You are correct to point out that the population patterns show that there are more students in the eastern half of the US…that leads to higher TV ratings for Big 10, SEC, ACC, and Big East bowl games, which leads to more money for those conferences. The Pac-12 is the premier conference in the west and they get FAR less money than the Big 10 and SEC for bowl games. TV networks aren’t biased and aren’t loyal to particular conferences…all they care about are how many people will watch the games they show.

The “net” is a very good question. However, your point about Nevada is wrong–Nevada makes a profit on the Hawaii Bowl because the *WAC* pays for the tickets that have to be purchased and the travel costs, just like Southern Mississippi made money because CUSA pays for the 10,000 tickets and the travel expenses.

The “net” actually makes bowl games only profitable for schools AND the conferences they belong to if the payouts are $1 mil or more. Payouts less than that are eaten up by travel expenses (flight costs, 1 week of hotel rooms, per diem, bowl gifts to the players, etc.). That is why I pointed out that all of the non-BCS bowl games with payouts over $1.1 mil go to AQ representatives.

good morning 808 happy 2012 to everyone

good to see bhf2 has righted his canoe to re-enter the regatta lol

went to see two UH bball games last night at the sheriff.

looking at the women’s Florida rooster noting only two players were listed down as forwards and rest inked in as guards. crap they were quick and very athletic. they ran the wahines kinda ragged.

men’s game was a different story. even though their free throws were horrid and dunking needs more work they played good swarming defense and opportunistic offense to pull off a good win.

  42. Slugger December 30, 2011 8:15 am

I feel bad for Stump if he doesn’t get a schollie…this kid moved out here on his own and paid his way through school last semester w/ the promise of a scholarship…If Stump doesn’t fit into Norm Chow’s game plan then wouldn’t that mean Woosley wouldn’t either unless he will be changing position’s when he gets here….NC needs a athletic QB at least for his first season because the oline will probably be learning new blocking schemes with the shift in going to a pro set style offense…

At one time you could count on one hand how many local high school programs ran the run and shoot. JJ made R&S the voque offense of choice. With the advent of Chow establishing his offense, I’m wondering how many programs will switch their style. Will continued use of the R&S have any effect on developing and prepping local talent to play in Chow’s scheme?

    Then again, talent is talent.

  50. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 9:01 am

I like the fact that Ikaika took snaps under. Hope he’s been working out. I didn’t see any hail mary type passes in his video clips, though.

  51. Randy F December 30, 2011 9:04 am

What do you think of Colt Brennan helping in some capacity on the UH staff if his pro career does not pan out this spring? Did NC say his offense will take parts of the Run and Shoot?

  52. urbankid December 30, 2011 9:11 am

why does everyone take the “run parts of run and shoot” so literally? EVERY team runs part of the run and shoot, it’s called the X or Z choice route, every single team has this in their package, it’s almost considered a standard play and not really run and shoot any more

  53. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 9:11 am

    Randy F,

I think many are hoping that NC will retain Rolo in some capacity.

  82. Pride. December 30, 2011 10:06 am

I’ve never heard where a new coach had to come in to a new job and his first order of business was to fire all of the ex-assistant coaches. Shouldn’t the assistants all have been fired with the head coach? That’s the way it’s usually done.

The requirement for the new coach to talk to every member on the staff really isn’t fair to the new head coach in my opinion. They should have all been fired and the new coach given the option to retain whoever he wants. If the new coach wants them, they’ll get a call. If they don’t get a call, then clean out their desks.

The new coach has much more to worry about and should not have been given the job of firing someone else’s staff. That just isn’t right. He’s doing someone else’s dirty work.

It’s called a contract. Many of the contracts expire beyond the Jan. 1 start of Chow’s contract. And it’s not that much of a burden for Chow, if he already has his mind set on a clean slate. How long does it take to say, “Sorry, but I’m going in a different direction. Good luck.”?

It’s called a contract. Many of the contracts expire beyond the Jan. 1 start of Chow’s contract. And it’s not that much of a burden for Chow, if he already has his mind set on a clean slate. How long does it take to say, “Sorry, but I’m going in a different direction. Good luck.”?

Yes hapahaoleboy, I agree. How long would it have taken for Hawaii’s AD to say, “Sorry, but we’re going in a different direction. If the new coach wants you he’ll call you. In the meantime, you should start making some phone calls. Good luck.”

  97. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2011 10:33 am

The analogy we’re using is Chow is asked to both build a house and raze a house.

Most builders start with an empty lot.

  98. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 10:34 am

Hard to say “no” to friends, even harder to childhood friends.

  99. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 10:35 am

    #96

Because it’s not the AD’s job to do that. I may be mistaken, but I thought the AD hires/fires the HC and the HC hires/fires the assistants.

  100. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2011 10:36 am

Pride is correct that the usual procedure is for the old staff to assume they’re released, and then the new coach gets to hire.

It is unique for a coach to think: “I’ve never met you but I’m going to let you go.”

  101. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 10:39 am

    #97

I think that’s a bad analogy for one reason: Chow was given a house. He is choosing to raze and rebuild. He could have chosen to extensively renovate instead. When builders start with an empty lot, it’s usually because there was no house there to begin with. In this case, the house he was given had some people still living in it with a lease that hasn’t expired yet.

  102. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2011 10:39 am

It’ll be interesting if the only person retained is Lumpkin.

  103. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2011 10:42 am

Isn’t the AD everyone’s boss in the athletics program?

Thought he officially hires any assistant coach.

I dont think the HC has the power to execute contracts on behalf of the State/University.

  104. DownSpout December 30, 2011 10:46 am

UH not even giving Miano, the “interim” head coach, an interview was disrespectful and shabby treatment. And then, for Chow not to retain him, was a hugely stupid move that calls his decision making into sharp questioning.

Now this: “Lee’s departure leaves three members from the 2011 coaching staff β€” offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, defensive line coach Tony Tuioti and director of personnel George Lumpkin. Chow will have telephone interviews with those three next week.”

Telephone interviews? This guy needs to get here and go to work in-person. What’s keeping him away? Some sort of “loyalty” to Utah? When it came to “loyalty” to UH, Chow didn’t think that was of any value when it came to, for example, Miano.

I’m beginning to think this guy is out to lunch. Or is it now “out to Chow.”

  105. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 10:46 am

    #103

So the AD is hiring Chow’s staff for Chow?

  106. Bryson December 30, 2011 10:46 am

Surprising about Cal Lee not being retained…but then again when you have over 400 applicants for coaching positions you gotta put yourself in the the best position to win and that’s what Norm Chow is doing…My only question is this should our staff be made up of mainland coaches who have no ties to the islands at all how will that improve local recruiting? I understand about NC being the recruiting coordinator but if he tells a recruit he should stay home and play for Hawaii what impact will that have being that he spent so many years telling kids they should go to the mainland?

  107. al December 30, 2011 10:50 am

pride. once again you are correct. the ethical thing to do is never the normal at manoa. it’s time for upper campus and the uhad to take ownership.

too often the “pass the buck” standard is abused here.

it is not only common practice in collegiate and/or pro sports but in the real world as well.

the house cleaning needs to go higher up the pipeline than the hc is what needs to be done.

    …nuff said.

Keith Uperesa is a great guy. As well as his wife is a wonderful person. Keith was one of the original members in the 70’s back at Punahou on the football team that was part of the POLYNESIAN PLATOON. Keith, Mosi Tatupu, Mike Ciacci, Jack Wright. After those guys all graduated high school Punahou football sucked for 25 years.

I better go to my FB page and see if anything is up with them.

I will always be fond of Biology class at Punahou. Keith, Mosi and Jack were my lab partners. They were seniors. I was the nerdy freshman. But they were all so kind to me. Especially Mosi. Those guys always had my back.

  113. al December 30, 2011 10:53 am

  114. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 10:53 am

    #107

Perhaps you haven’t been in the “real world” very much? When a new CEO takes over a real world company and the held over manager/executives are still under contract, he/she — as CEO — still has to decide whether to let those people go or retain them. That’s common practice as well as common courtesy.

  115. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 10:56 am

    #108

Well that contradicts what ST is saying that Chow is building his own house. I would assume that means Chow is doing the hiring. You’re saying that the AD is the one doing the hiring. Perhaps it needs to be defined what is technically meant by “hiring”.

  116. Stretch December 30, 2011 10:58 am

114 – as an assistant coach, you are hired by the Head Coach. You are on HIS team. When that coach is gone, his team of coaches are gone too.

  117. jkjones December 30, 2011 10:59 am

@106. it doesnt matter. coaches are constantly changing venues. They just highlight the positives OF THEIR NEW VENUE.

NC has positives to pitch besides his resume and heisman mentorship, including good reasoning for local athletes to stay home. Norm Chow should know, he spent 38-years on the mainland and is well aware of the downsides of going away. Turn it around. Who would you believe? A coach that has never left the islands or a coach who has seen local boys struggle on the mainland and can tell you what happens after the first snow flakes fall.

  118. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 11:02 am

    #116

I think you’re wrong there. I doubt their contracts were with Greg McMackin. I’m pretty sure their contracts are individually made with the University of Hawaii. If you have verbiage from an assistant’s contract that states their position is tied to a specific head coach, I’d gladly affirm that you are correct.

  119. LizKauai (bonafide) December 30, 2011 11:03 am

  120. LizKauai (bonafide) December 30, 2011 11:05 am

As for assistants, it feels like the HC chooses and the contracts are with UH…

Do those who are “not retained” still get paid through the end of their contracts? Or is there some kind of severance for an early release?

  121. Pride. December 30, 2011 11:08 am

#118 – We obviously disagree, and that’s okay. Nothing wrong with that. I’ve been wrong many times in my life so this wouldn’t be the first time. Just stating my opinon, and saying that I disagree with yours. No harm intended.

  122. Stretch December 30, 2011 11:08 am

118 – yes, you are correct about the contracts being with UH. Since that is true, then UH should be the one informing them that they are not going to be retained. Thanks for clearing that up.

  123. mo808 December 30, 2011 11:10 am

I would be very surprised if any one is asked to remain on with Coach Chow! But, it’s good that he does give them consideration!

  124. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 11:11 am

    #122

That also means that UH can tell Norm he has to interview each assistant still on contract.

  125. WarriorNY December 30, 2011 11:12 am

Wow, I thought our linebackers have been fantastic in the past few years. I’m surprised that Lee will not be apart of the staff. However, this is encouraging because it means that NC is here to win.

  126. Stretch December 30, 2011 11:13 am

122 – it was already reported that Chow had to interview all coaches.

  127. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 11:16 am

    #126

Yes, but someone else on here was whining that Norm shouldn’t be doing that. I’m just saying it’s not unprecedented in the football world or the real world.

  128. Curt December 30, 2011 11:17 am

This morning on the Artie Wilson radio show, I was distracted but thought I heard June Jones talk about Colt. If so, can someone summarize the comments?

  129. Pride. December 30, 2011 11:17 am

#104 – I disagree with Downspout too. No harm intended.

  130. jkjones December 30, 2011 11:18 am

Both Tony and Rolo have value. However, in Rolo’s case, he has a future either way. He is young and Norm Chow is not. If he goes away and makes a name on the mainland while building resources, he will be a favorite in the next turn-a-round at Hawaii. If he stays, he learns from a coach with credentials at the highest level of offensive pursuits. Thanks to Hawaii, Rolo has a starting resume, most coaches at his age dream of–it’s up to him to keep it going. He must improve his stock every year.

  131. Stretch December 30, 2011 11:19 am

The earlier point is that Norm Chow shouldn’t have to be the one telling the coaches they are being let go. It’s not easy to tell people they will no longer have a job.

  132. Pride. December 30, 2011 11:19 am

#127 – Now I’m being called a whiner. Now I really disagree with haoleboy. But thanks to my relationship with LizKauai, I love all creatures.

  133. 808Bowler December 30, 2011 11:22 am

Ya I bet rolo has options.

  134. hapahaoleboy December 30, 2011 11:23 am

    #131

If he’s not willing to interview and let go a dozen grown men who probably already suspect they’re being let go — especially if cleaning house is what’s typical by what others here have said –then maybe he doesn’t have the mettle to be a Div 1 head football coach or deserve to make half a million bucks a year.

  135. Pride. December 30, 2011 11:23 am

#130 – Next time around, Rolo may be out of our price range. Fortunately, Rolo is the type of guy who will turn down 2.5 mill. on the mainland to be a head coach at Hawaii for 1 mill.

Most wouldn’t do it, but Rolo probably would.

  136. Pride. December 30, 2011 11:25 am

#134 – Yes hapahaoleboy, I agree with you on that point.

  138. Slugger December 30, 2011 11:31 am

Good luck to Coach Cal. Always nice to see him at practice.

The timing of Coach Chow’s start might be making the retention of some of the assistant coaches needed until Coach Norm has completed his hires. Weren’t some of the current coaches asked to keep working on recruiting? That can’t be done if all of the coaches had been released at the time of the hiring announcement for the HC. No one home, lights out in the offices…

Saw DJ Armbrust last night at the MBB game. He’d like to come back to UH, but with the changes in direction of the program that might not be possible for him. IIRC, he’s at a JC in Georgia.

Sad thing about Coach Lee is he probably won’t be coaching at the college again. The other coaches like Rolovich, Aranda, Smith, Tuioti are young and resilient. Coach Miano has definite offers on the mainland. Who knows, he may want some of our young coaching talent to follow him.

  145. Old Diver December 30, 2011 11:59 am

That is if decides to go.

  148. Old School Dave December 30, 2011 12:07 pm

Best of luck to the UH assistants for their future endeavors. They’re all “big boys” and knew the nature of the business when they took the job. College coaching is not for the thin-skinned and you can’t ever get too comfortable in any position, especially when you’re on a year to year contract as an assistant.

There hasn’t been a change in staff of this dimension since 1999 when June Jones cleaned house and brought in an entirely new staff. Of course there are fans and friends of assistants not retained who won’t be happy about this, but it’s all part of the college coaching business.

The plot is definitely thickening…Let’s hope Chow is able to pull together a good staff and keep a cohesive football team during this transition. I also hope Chow has alienated anyone by doing the dirty-work of letting people go. You don’t want to burn too many bridges even if you’re 65 years old and with a limited future.

With choke experience, wisdom, contacts, etc. HeΚ»ll be here in a couple of days and we should let him do his job. He knows what he wants to do, he knows what he needs to do, he knows how to get the job done. This is not a popularity contest. This is not high school.

  157. el burro sabio December 30, 2011 12:59 pm

It doesn’t matter either way. JD could have told all the assistants that they were out on March 31 but were welcome to reapply, and if NC didn’t keep them on there would still be ruffled feathers.

  158. Warrior14T December 30, 2011 1:09 pm

  160. mikey December 30, 2011 1:13 pm

My New Chinese neighbor to be bought the place next door 3 months ago and still haven’t moved in. Saying it’s not the right Feng Shui time. Seems January 8th, 2012 is a great day to move in.

I hope NC don’t wait that long to move in.

  161. DownSpout December 30, 2011 1:15 pm

#156. I agree. This is not high school: doing telephone interviews is elementary school.

  162. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 1:22 pm

    DownSpout…

Maybe you’re right.. Maybe he should have simply cut them off at the pass and send em a post card saying .. “Sorry, Rick, but I’m cleaning house!” Or better still, have them fly over at their own expense for a face to face in Utah?

Then again, maybe, those who wanted to keep Miano should have voiced themselves loud and clear against Mack’s retirement. Otherwise, it’s out with the old.. in with the new..erm.. old.. erm..

  163. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 1:24 pm

Coach Norm isn’t on Hawaii payroll yet and already he’s doing telephone interviews… selecting his staff… He’s doing UH and the existing coaches a bigfavor by getting these things out of the way ASAP, rather than have them hanging around waiting till the very last moment when the best coaching opportunities elsewhere have been filled.

  164. cocobean December 30, 2011 1:26 pm

Powell and Rauscher. As Coach Chow said the first thing new assistances should do after getting off the plane is drive to Laie.

May I suggest the second thing they do is check into the Laie Inn for a week. Within hours they’ll be a buzz in the community that two of the new UH coaches are staying there. The locals will know who they are. They should be seen and heard around the area as much as possible.

Driving into town every morning and back in the evening will give them some perspective on what many of our players from Kahuku have been dealing with.

  165. mikey December 30, 2011 1:30 pm

And I hope everything works out with Keith Uperesa. Like Coach Chow, he has done his due and needs to come home to us. And I am hoping that he can bring that lucky streak of his, since he started coaching back in 1995 at Snow College with 4 years of Top Ten Ranking!

    2010-2011 Nicholas State

    2005-2009 UNLV OL Coach

2004 Utah OL Coach with a record of 12-0 Fiesta Bowl win by 35-7

1999-2000 Idaho St Offensive Coord Rated as Top 12 2 years; # 9 in 1999

  166. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2011 1:46 pm

And yes what I meant by “hire” is that the assistants contracts are with UH.

As to who decides what coach will be able to sign such a contract, Chow makes his choice. At least I believe that to be the case.

  167. Suckaaaa December 30, 2011 1:47 pm

We are ALL Warrior football fans. Opinions are expressed, we learn from each other here. No whining involved.

Coach Chow was told he had to interview the current staff, so he is, and he makes the call one way or the other. Pomai’s #155 is a good way to look at the situation. And this “house” that Chow is building is his to design as he wishes. He gets to put the bathroom wherever he wants. It is kinda odd that Coach is the one who appears to be doing all of the hiring or”firing” as it were. We don’t have all details, so its hard to comment.

Coach Cal Lee will be remembered as one of Hawaii’s greatest football coaches. There thousands of fan and players who owe him a debt of gratitude. Thanks for evey thing Coach Cal.

  171. Da Punchbowl Kid December 30, 2011 1:59 pm

Let’s not forget, Coach Chow has at least 400 applicants vying for a position in his staff. That’s a LOT of evaluating and decision making to do. Glad I don’t have to pick from a pile that big. Let the man do what he gotta do.

  172. rainbowfan December 30, 2011 2:00 pm

Chow should have started full time on his new job and not coach at Utah anymore. Either you are the head coach at UH or a coach at Utah, not both at the same time.

I don’t think he would have the time to be a recruiting coordinator for UH and also the head coach.

  173. d1shima December 30, 2011 2:04 pm

Yessir Coach Chow stated that he had about 400 applications for assistant positions and that at least two showed up in El Paso to meet with him.

Im sure the CBS game tomorrow betw the Utes and Ga Tech will feature some discussion about Norm Chow’s hire at Hawaii. That should turn the spotlight on Hawaii’s program and give it national exposure for recruiting purposes, among others. Just saying, Chow can take advantage of the situation and hit the ground running. At 65, Im sure NC is aware of time constraints and can walk and chew gum at the same time. Not too concerned with the timing of his staff selection. Reading between the lines, he has prolly made up his mind and wants to clear the slate before announcing.

  183. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2011 3:10 pm

Donovan said he sent letters to the staff reminding them that their contracts expire March 31. In essence, because they’re on one-year contracts, they should assume they will not be renewed unless otherwise notified.

I think these coaches will be fine.

Ment be. sorry for the misspell. sometimes I think the old keypads are better then touch screen.

  190. newbie December 30, 2011 3:30 pm

188 – he wont leave till he has another job in hand. that would not be smart, too many coaches out of jobs right now. bet he’s looking though. Defensive jobs available at Washington right now. Holt is gone and the safeties coach fired.

  191. kailua000 December 30, 2011 3:32 pm

what about Director of Football Ops Bianca. is she on contract and staying or going. havent heard anything bout her in all this conversation.

  192. 808Bowler December 30, 2011 3:33 pm

True. But I hope he gets retained.

  193. expat December 30, 2011 3:40 pm

The assistant coaches can’t just leave – they are under contract through March. They have to wait until they are released and I assume that if they told by NC they are out they get a check for the balance of their contract. Norm has to get rid of coaches before he can hire any new ones as there are limits to how many coaches can be on staff.

I don’t know what the actual assistant contracts say but I would have to assume that the coaches can’t just be fired — they are on one year contracts and letting them go just means not renewing. But for Norm to fill out his staff he would need the coaches he doesn’t want to work out an agreement with UH — which would mean a buy out. An awkward situation.

  194. tommui December 30, 2011 3:57 pm

There are some coaches from the old regime that I like – but my job doesn’t depend on them.

Coach Chow’s success or failure leading our UH Warriors is dependent, not only on his players, but on his coaches.

So it is up to him to choose those coaches upon which he has confidence.

  195. Bowwar December 30, 2011 4:11 pm

Mui: I agree…Don’t burden him with the baggage that Mack had to carry when assuming the job from JJ. I think Mack’s downfall was his loyalty to the existing coaches and not having the $$$ to attract better assistants. Of course, part of not having the money had to do with having a $1.1 million contract…Chow is doing the right thing by taking a smaller contract, but allowing for more money to hire “his” coordinators and assistants. I hope that Chow hires one of three coaches left, as it will be valuable to have some link between the two regimes.

  205. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 4:48 pm

Had Coach McMackin had a better group of supporting coaches, we wouldn’t be talking Chow today… Thing is, the fans want more than two bowls in 4 years. They want more than a ten win season every three years. They want more than what JJ was able to produce or they won’t be coming back in big numbers.

  206. RedZone December 30, 2011 4:50 pm

Donovan was on the sports animals and explained why the assistant contracts are til March. I can’t remember the details but it made sense to me. I think he said something about giving them a 90 day cushion from the end of the season which included the bowl game.

  207. RedZone December 30, 2011 5:15 pm

Na Wahine goes down in flames to North Carolina State, 84-54. Na Wahine shot 15-67, otherwise they held their own in rebounds, FT, Steals and assists. TO margin was 22-17 with UH throwing the ball away most often.

Keith left USC when Pete Carroll took over at USC. I am under the impression and from the several HC’s I know, when a new coach comes in…the existing staff usually resigns. Then they reapply. That is my understanding of how it works.

It is good to see how there is such an outpouring of UH Ohana concern for Coach Lee and Coach Miano. They were more than coaches, solid members of our community. I’m sure Coach Chow feels some heat because he understands Hawaii, but its nothing new . . . check his time with USC, Utah, BYU and even negotiations with Lame Kiffin at USC. It is a business and if Rich Miano still wants to coach in D-1, then I’m sure he will get connected with the right program.

What a disappointment at the women’s basletball tournament yesterday and today – four blowouts – and the Wahine were on the losing end of two of them.

The Sun Bowl is on KBMB at 9 am tomorrow morning. Hope the commentators talk about UH’s new coach.

Again, show up tomorrow afternoon to create a raucus and rowdy playing environment for the Rainbow Warriors – watching Miah bustle his huns up & down the court makes me wonder what role he’s going to play in the new coaching regime.

Remember that the men’s volleyball season kicks off next Thursday and Friday against UC San Diego.

As for me personally, life starts anew with the beginning of spring training for the 2012 baseball & softball seasons.

Finally, for those of you who are interested in greeting the New Year in a very special way on Sunday morning: We’ll be hiking up Makapu`u to greet the rising sun with an oli presented by Kumu Samuel M. Gon III and to raise our glasses with non-alcoholic bubbly to honor those who have earned this privilege.

The Malapu`u parking lot will open at 5:30 am; however, we’ll be gathering at the base of the trail shortly before 6:15 am and then heading on up the trail no later than 6:25. There’ll be plenty of stopping points, but we should be at the top around 6:50 am. The sun rises at 7:09 am tucked behind Moloka`i at this time of year.

Be sure to bring a flashlight as it will still be dark at the start of the hike – wear (real) walking shoes, bring a hoodie or jacket because the wind will be blowing fairly hard plus a small umbrella just in case.

We’ll be heading back down the trail around 7:25 am and going over to The Shack in Hawaii Kai for breakfast and NFL football – our treat if you plan to join us for both events.

If you’re going to join us, please e-mail me swood at hoku dot by 6 pm tomorrow evening or let me know if you’re at the basketball game. We’ll be stopping by The Shack on our way home to make a Sunday morning reservation, but I can pick up your e-mails on my iPhone.

Here are the 8 am games – the choice(s) will not be known until Sunday, but I imagine that the best & most challening ones are the games we’ll see.

New York Jets at Miami Dolphins, (CBS)

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots, (CBS)

San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams, (FOX)

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints, (FOX)

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings, (FOX)

Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers, (FOX)

Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles, (FOX)

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars, (CBS)

Tennessee Titans at Houston Texans, (CBS)

D1 – Many sports bars not only have Oceanic Time-Warner but also satellite dishes to get more broadcasts. I knew about about the CBS and Fox games, but I could not get anything about the rest of them so that’s the choices so far.

BTW – I noticed a typo in my post about the Sun Bowl. The CBS call letters are KGMB – Channel 7 on Oceanic.

and especially since he is backing up his rhetoric with cash. gotta respect him for that.

    BIG HILO –

not going fill up da stadium until da State wants to help out.

In what ways do you want DA STATE to help out? Once I get your list, I can provide you with the list of state agencies/departments/people in charge who can make change.

Off to bed – We’re getting up really early because we have to take a kazillion bags of green waste up to the Kapa`a Transfer Station before we head on into town for the UH/UNLV men’s basketball game. The high winds we’ve had to deal with for the past couple of weeks have done some serious damage to our yard – way beyond our two gree bins – and the landlord is coming by on Monday for his semi-annual inspection of the property.

For those of you on the other side of the International Date Line – Happy New Year!!!

an da State could have odda contests just a little bit earlier before the game, involving high school (or school students). give peeps a reason to help fill the place, give coach Chow a chance to get things rolling….

I guess what I’m saying is that there has to be some well paid πŸ˜† State employee who has more brains than me to figure out how to hoomalemale peeps, get a crowd of high school students interested in going to Aloha stadium at about the same time as UH football, enough to stay or show up for the games…

That’s a trail young guys like Aranda & Smith can follow.

In fact, Aranda looks like he’s landed in Cajun country already.

    still yet…

hats off to Miano for his speed and quickness schools and efforts.

he’s a great keeper in that regard. and his work ethic is beyond doubt.

but Coach Chow gotta feel comfortable with his program, because the buck stops there.

so all things considered, for me, best of luck to Miano. and Lee. We got Chow now. and he had terms to start after the game today. so gotta respect him for that too.

so don’t pick on him just because he had obligations to finish. we coulda waited till now to say who our new coachis. that woulda left things still in the air. better off we are this way.

and you just gotta know in your gut that Chow is thinkin this one through.

it just feels that way. so no humbug him. like he said…. he’s 65… and he’ll outwork

    everyone in the room.

yoou know the man means what he says. not behind the back kind of guy.

    solid. real solid.
