EL PASO — Norm Chow noted that he has been in Hawaii only one day during his one-week tenure as UH head coach. To be precise, it was a 13-hour trip.

Chow, who will remain on the mainland for at least another week, will have telephone interviews with some members of the 2011 coaching staff next week, then meet with the players Jan. 10. The Warriors will begin hosting recruits Jan. 13. Chow said offensive linemen top the wish list. He also plans to honor oral commitments. Translation: Dustin Adams retains his offer.

Expect these changes:

• T-shirts and shorts will be out as travel wear.

• Practices probably will be closed to the public.

• No decision yet on the practice times. The past 13 years, the Warriors were one of the few teams to practice in the morning. Chow will decide after reviewing class schedules.

Utah defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake  said Lewis Walker is being used as the scout quarterback helping to simulate Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense. Walker, who was raised in Salt Lake City, is a former UH defensive back.

Another difference between Pac-12 schools and a school in the Pacific is detailed equipment trucks:

I think UH uses trucks borrowed from the University of Haul. I have noticed U-Haul logos.

Well, it appears that UTEP and UH will be reunited. The alliance between Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference, of which UH will join as a football member in July, will result in two divisions. UTEP and the MWC schools will be part of the western division.

Divide the players against each other and or remove the foundation of trust… Well… Not good.

    Morning, everyone!

Always wondered why we traveled so rag tag, while I see some mainland schools wearing at least ties with collared shirts and slacks.

  9. whitey December 29, 2011 7:17 am

honoring a committment is most honorable and thank you coach chow for doing it right.

  10. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2011 7:18 am

    Whuh? huh?

Watchoo mean no t-shirt and slippas? That’s how our other coach did it! 🙂

All jokes aside, I like what Chow is doing. All business baby. I’m sure there will be some players who don’t like it. But the writing is certainly on the wall: It’s Chow way or da highway.

These boys had better be ready.

So this what we’re looking at for new coaches so far:

    – RB Coach

    – OL Coach

    – DC

    – DB Coach

Hopefully Rolo and Tony are still in the mix in some capacity.

  19. kapakahi December 29, 2011 7:31 am

What about JC transfer verbal commits JT Turner and/or Sione Lavaka?

But then again, I kinda recall that their commitments to UH seemed conditional….tied to whether Tony Tuioti would be retained or not by new coaching staff.

So other incoming HS greyshirt commits to be honored for Spring 2012 too? LB Lancelot Williams? LB Penitito Fa’alogo? DE Ipulasi Eselu? DE David Katina? QB Ikaika Woosley?

  20. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 7:36 am

    WarriorNY:

    You are correct.

  21. Wes'side Warrior December 29, 2011 7:36 am

    University of Haul… Bwahahahahaha!!!

  22. Old School Dave December 29, 2011 7:37 am

Closed practices are a good idea. Less distractions, more business-like, more focus, get more teaching and learning done.

Hope the returning players are busy working out on Ching field and in the weight room (instead of taking it easy over the holiday break). Need to make a good impression with this new HC and coaching staff.

  23. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 7:40 am

Here’s the deal on the JC guys:

If Turner enrolls at UH for the spring semester, he will need to accumulate a lot of credits to be eligible to play in 2012. If he continues at the JC, he will have less of a classload. The risk is that by waiting, he now becomes a free agent again.

Lavaka is appealing to reset his eligibility clock. After returning from a mission, he did not enroll in school right away. But his clock started. As it is now, he has one year to play one season. If he wins the appeal, as hoped, he’ll have two years to play two seasons.

  24. koakane December 29, 2011 7:42 am

Chow said the players don’t need to wear ties, but he does want them to serve as representatives of the university and state.

Stretch, meanwhile, is permitted to wear shorts on road trips.

  26. tommui December 29, 2011 7:44 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Old School Dave #22

Closed practices are a good idea

Maybe, but what is DPK, JMxxxx et al going to do with their mornings? 🙂

  27. koakane December 29, 2011 7:48 am

tommui the tree will have privacy bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (e kala mai dpk just couldn’t pass up)

  28. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 7:48 am

    No. 26:

They could get media passes. Practices will be open to the media.

  29. Kevin December 29, 2011 7:49 am

    I like the uniformed look.

That’s another thing Nike didn’t give to UH. When other Under Armour teams like the softball and baseball teams travel, they are all wearing the same thing. UA tops and UA long pants of the athletic-type (either matching shirts or jackets depending on the climate and location). Even the staffers are in unison with matching polos and hats.

ST pics in airports in the past showed some players wear the UA travel/pre game gear, but not all the same as pointed out with some wear casual wear not even UH logo related.

I don’t think we need to do the suit and tie thing. The schools people see on TV are the BIG programs that consider a trip from Florida to Georgia “TRAVEL”, so sitting on a bus for a few hours in that is NOTHING like being on a plane and then on a bus for almost half a day.

  30. Old School Dave December 29, 2011 7:55 am

I guess you could watch practices from above by the dorms, at least until you see Tom Heffernan coming up to chase you away……. 🙂

  31. Kevin December 29, 2011 7:56 am

When practices are closed, as is the norm with other schools (pardon the PUN 😉 ), are boosters allowed to watch?

Might be something Na Koa might work out with Coach Chow down the line?

  32. Kai Kane December 29, 2011 7:58 am

Funny thing about travel attire, the Warriors have the same travel attire as Utah, but the old boss did not enforce any travel attire rules (or ANY rules for that matter).

  33. Otto December 29, 2011 8:01 am

These are big guys squeezing into regular size airline seats for a minimum 5 hour flight. Head coaches fly first class… I think they should dress for comfort given the distance and the multiple flights they have to make. It’s all perspective, I remember a recent article with Mack Brown, UT coach, saying Texas joining the Pac-12 didn’t make sense to him, because traveling to Oregon and Washington for road games meant the team wouldn’t get back to campus until after midnight on saturday evenings or maybe even sunday….

  34. Old School Dave December 29, 2011 8:01 am

Funny story told to me years ago by my uncle who lived in L.A. He said that he was in LAX years ago and saw the UCLA Basketball team making its way through. Star player Sidney Wicks was wearing an expensive suit, as were the other players. About 30 mins later, the Long Beach State BB team comes through and their players, including All-American player Ed Ratliff are wearing worn polo shirt, jeans, and sneakers.

  35. forsurftoo December 29, 2011 8:02 am

Just called a certain “old guy” that goes to all the practices and told him he could clean out his locker!

  36. koakane December 29, 2011 8:02 am

I like the attention to details coach chow is implementing. Nothing to dramatic but needed to reflect the program it represents.

  37. Kevin December 29, 2011 8:03 am

When Greg McMackin took over, one of the manini things we wondered is if practices were to remain open, and as someone that liked going I did accept the potential for it to be closed because it’s his show to run. Well he kept em open.

Same feelings here, while I wasn’t able to attend practices as regularly as I did in 08 and 09 (think I only went to a handful combined for 2010 and this season).

Practices being open to the public was ALWAYS a luxury and a privilege. I don’t think it is “owed” to anyone.

BUT then again, you might have some kicking and screaming about how they the taxpayers pay the coach’s salary and deserve every right to know everything at all times. 🙄 🙄 🙄

  38. ai-eee-soos December 29, 2011 8:04 am

Dustin Adams: If you are reading this blog …..

” … Chow said offensive linemen top the wish list. He also plans to honor oral commitments. Translation: Dustin Adams retains his offer. … “

  39. bigislandkurt December 29, 2011 8:07 am

No to suit and tie. But some pants (no jeans), shoes (no sneakers) and one Aloha shirt or Polo could work. I once went from a coach who was really casual to a coach who required us to wear khaki pants and button-down shirt. We hated it at first. But got used to it. When you feel good, look good, you tend to take a better approach to the job. I can’t believe I’m saying this because I might be the most casually-dressed person on the planet. I just speak from experience. When there is a job to get done, approach it with class.

    BIK

  40. Kevin December 29, 2011 8:10 am

Yup UH does have the SAME Under Armour travel apparel other UA schools have, but yes the difference WAS that the entire team appeared to use them elsewhere and here it was optional.

    Key word *was*.

  41. koakane December 29, 2011 8:10 am

casual business travel apparel could be worked out taking into account UH goes mucho distances to play games.

something comfortable but reflects a positive image.

  42. Garret December 29, 2011 8:11 am

I’m glad that UH will honor Dustin Adams’ commitment. Norm Chow saw how the depth chart makes OL recruiting a huge priority in this class, and it will be hard for UH to get a lot of OL better than Adams at this late date. So, UH is both doing the honorable thing and doing what is best for their recruiting class.

  43. Old School Dave December 29, 2011 8:11 am

#23: Thanks ST. That explains the circumstances behind Turner and Lauvaka not signing LOI. Hope things work out for those two. The coaching staff will need to be selective in who’s offered with scholarship limitations.

Not like the old days when schools could sign 100 players like Johnny Majors did at Pitt back in the 70s. Majors did find one Tony Dorsett in that group of freshmen.

  44. Stretch December 29, 2011 8:13 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Stretch, meanwhile, is permitted to wear shorts on road trips.

I am representing the Tsaikos on road trips so shorts IS the uniform.

  45. Garret December 29, 2011 8:13 am

I was expecting UH to close practices under whatever coach that they chose, so I’m not surprised that Coach Chow is closing practices to non-media people. JJ even closed SMU’s practices several years ago so UH was in a very small minority with open practices. It is probably better for the players to focus on the practice and for the coaches to not have to worry about people passing along information.

  46. Garret December 29, 2011 8:15 am

It looks like UTEP could be part of the Western (MWC) division of the alliance for football and part of the Eastern (CUSA) division of the alliance for basketball. Or, they could put UTEP in the Western division for all sports and get a football-only member in the East.

I would put this divisions down in pencil though…realignment may not be over.

  47. Wassup December 29, 2011 8:16 am

More positive steps for the program. First steps to being a top notch program. So far, I like the changes. The program is definitely heading in The right direction. We definitely got the right guy for the job.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2011 8:16 am

glad to hear dressing neatly will be the Norm. hope he requires players to tuck in their god dang jerseys too.

  49. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2011 8:18 am

$6 and a pair of good binoculars will have to suffice i guess.

  50. d1shima December 29, 2011 8:18 am

Sounds like the new Coach is continuing in the right direction.

    re: “comfortable” travel gear

Isn’t the UA stuff supposed to be comfortable?

Be a team, act like a team, show up as a team….

  51. Garret December 29, 2011 8:18 am

Jayson Rego and Joshua Rice are now playing pro rugby in Australia.

As they experienced their first Christmas in Australia, Jayson Rego and Joshua Rice revealed their desire to play at the highest level.

Rego was previously a running back for the University of Hawaii, which competed in the top division of US college football.

  52. chopsueyboy December 29, 2011 8:19 am

    if practice are closed,

will they put up a fence like how Notre Dame

    showed in the movie Rudy?

  53. Garret December 29, 2011 8:20 am

I do like Coach Chow’s decision to have the team dress more uniformly when traveling. Like d1shima said:

Be a team, act like a team, show up as a team….

  54. Kevin December 29, 2011 8:23 am

    D1,

It is. Kind of questionable to see the bigger guys sporting dress pants considering they do not sell a lot of them in their size and that’s extra $$$ the kid or their parents would have to shell out.

The team has the Under Armour travel apparel meant for traveling athletes to look good, look like athletes, and represent their school as a team. At least now Coach Chow will make sure ALL of it is going to be used by EVERYONE.

  55. koakane December 29, 2011 8:25 am

comfortable travel wear… have the players choose from the approved UA apparel what they would consider appropriate then all members of the traveling squad has to use it.

  56. truegreen December 29, 2011 8:28 am

    WarriorNY (#17, #20):

You are not correct. If you are as nitpicky as you say, you would’ve noticed that ST said Coach Chow “has been in Hawaii only one day during his one-week tenure as UH head coach.” When he came for his interview, which was more than a week ago, he was not UH head coach.

  57. koakane December 29, 2011 8:28 am

wow too much work, where is the birdies when needed

    taking time out

  58. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2011 8:28 am

I don’t think they need to be Loro Piana dress pants. Khakis or some cotton slacks would be fine.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the green H-logo polo shirts and khakis that can be bought online for $15.00.

  59. d1shima December 29, 2011 8:32 am

    Kevin,

I can understand the extra expense argument.

I also know exactly how much two college players spent for their travel clothes when they played…both were at non-scholarship granting programs. One dressed in shirt and tie for road games; the other dressed in dress slacks, dress shoes and team polo. They both had careers that included 8+ hour bus rides. Both had team members who were accustomed to the “Big and Tall” departments at the stores.

I just would like the team to show up and represent the fans who do travel to road games in a classy manner.

  60. Couch potato December 29, 2011 8:33 am

    Chow Dynasty!

at least still get chance the practices could be open to the public. ST did write “probably”. utah’s spring practices were open to the public but diff hc. i wish it is open then i can get my lazy arse off the couch and watch change evolve.

  61. Couch potato December 29, 2011 8:35 am

what is loro piana? only dress pants i know is angel flights. too tight then and no fit now.

  62. (Jesse) James December 29, 2011 8:36 am

Good morning Tsaikos…Hope all have a great day.

Wait, Stretch has pants???? If no shorts, what will Gramps do???? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA j/k

    #27 Gramps….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

  63. Otto December 29, 2011 8:37 am

Hawaii is one of the most casual places. If they wear long pants and regular shirts, thats not representative of UH or the State. Have you seen what UH students wear to class? Next thing is no long hair and no visible tats….

  64. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2011 8:38 am

Just in case our players are scrambling to find pants now.

Plus Size slacks 38 – 52 inches in 4 different colors for $12.49.

    http://www.amazon.com/Oleg-Cassini-Waist-Pleated-Pants/dp/B00302EDXU/ref=sr_1_5?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1325184816&sr=1-5

  65. Kevin December 29, 2011 8:38 am

I think the perfect compromise would be:

    Majority of road games:

-Under Armour shirts or jacket as tops

    -Under Armour long pants (athletic/windbreaker-type)

Nationally televised and bowl games home or away (cameras are EVERYWHERE):

    -Under Armour polo shirts

    -Dress Slacks and Shoes.

  66. (Jesse) James December 29, 2011 8:39 am

D1…True. Coming from a school where we had to wear dress slacks/business casual slacks, colored button down shirts, and ties for four years, it does make a difference in the way you act and feel.

  67. (Jesse) James December 29, 2011 8:40 am

Oh, and we paid for all our own stuff too…and it wasn’t cheap….but had to be done. 🙂

  68. 99club December 29, 2011 8:44 am

    Slippahs OK?

Interesting news about UTEP and the Western Division. Easy drive from my locale at a completely legal 85 mph on I-10 if that’s one of our road games. A-frame or Rudy’s BBQ…decisions, decisions.

Last year’s MWC schedule came out on 3 March. Can’t wait to see the 2012 road dates for planning purposes. Have they come up with a name for the merged conference?

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2011 8:44 am

    #65,

I’d go for that. So long they are dressing as one its a heck of a lot better than before.

  70. Ipu Man December 29, 2011 8:47 am

People haven’t worn shoes versus sneakers since the 70’s.

  71. d1shima December 29, 2011 8:49 am

  73. Ipu Man December 29, 2011 8:58 am

Luved this quote in the Desert News by coach Chow about leaving Utah for Hawaii:

” I went to school here,” he said. “I thought I was going to finish here. I really did. I don’t know. Life is so screwy. You know what I mean?”

  74. Ipu Man December 29, 2011 8:59 am

    Under Armor Polo shirts

Dark Lava lava with light colored belt

    (under armor shorts underneath: mandatory)

    Dark sandals – socks optional

    Coaches wear:

Long sleeve white shirts with Tie

    Dark sandals – socks optional

  82. d1shima December 29, 2011 9:15 am

    maybe UA going get lavalava?

Would it be considered HeatGear or ColdGear?

  83. Bowwar December 29, 2011 9:15 am

I can’t see why one of the Aloha Shirt companies (e.g. Reyn Spooner, etc.) wouldn’t be willing to DONATE stylish traveling Aloha Shirts for all of the Warrior teams…It would get them alot of publicity and it would keep a uniform look. It’s about time that JD and his staff get off their bottoms and start marketing the program better.

Everybody has to start thinking Big Time if they want it to happen…

  84. madeinhawaii December 29, 2011 9:16 am

Would be cool if they could get Under Amour to come up with some kind of comfortable but classy travel uni…go ensemble… sell Hawaii.. sell a Brand… make a name for themselves.

  85. Kekoa December 29, 2011 9:23 am

    Good morning village people!

I’ll just continue to use my Tsai-ko ID badge for entry to practice. My fancy new Na Koa card will be used to get priority seating near the tree. As an added bonus, I also have my Na Wahine booster club card as back up.

Bring on the 2012 Warrior Football Team, your fans are waiting.

  86. PolyMom December 29, 2011 9:24 am

What you are going to see is Big Time college behavior. Not surprised about the changes. And if he is does implement the closed team practices for some games that Includes the media too. At USC and UCLA certain practices are closed even to media. On the mainland all the reporters have to watch from the top of the parking lots. They use binoculars.

It is going to be very interesting to see how Coach Chow does treat the media. Wonder if he will implement the no talking to players rule?

Guarantee there will be the no rubber slipper rule. When you look good…you feel good. I love all the rules. Happy to buy a nice suit for the kid. It makes them men. Not boys. Like I said some will fight his rules. Those who do will go bye bye.

Good for Norm Chow. Like he said…”those who survive will play”

  87. Couch potato December 29, 2011 9:27 am

send some H-logo wear to n. korea. they could use something other than dark drab.

send H-logo wear to pop icons in japan and s. korea and usa. any paparazzi captures them on film wearing it and it will be a big seller. maybe not korea since the may end up making their own H-fakes.

  88. WarriorNY December 29, 2011 9:28 am

    truegreen… haha…

  89. Pomai December 29, 2011 9:29 am

Travel uni – just as what Coach and Walker are wearing in Photo, but UH green with white piping with UH green polo shirt, nothing wrong with UA UH green sneakers. Main thing is they all dress alike = team.

  90. papajoe2 December 29, 2011 9:29 am

I wonder if the dicipline thing will include the hair?

  91. papajoe2 December 29, 2011 9:31 am

    Hair today, gone tomorrow?

  92. PolyMom December 29, 2011 9:32 am

People when they travel to the mainland it is fall and winter. As a fashionista I see them wearing black UA track suits with green shirts with black shoes. They can hemo the shoes when they get on the plane. But like they say when you go for a job interview…first impressions mean everything.

They can wear their lava lava in the hotel rooms. But I bet they won’t be allowed out of the hotel toom with any lava lava.

  93. mikesmith December 29, 2011 9:32 am

Rumor of Rocky Seto coming on board as DC. Heard that Norm was not on speaking terms with his past co-workers at USC, don’t think Rocky is a candidate, he would be good though.

  94. PolyMom December 29, 2011 9:33 am

Hair I bet will have to e in pony tail. Do not think he is a fan of the long hair.

  95. Pomai December 29, 2011 9:34 am

Sorry PolyMom you’ve been on the mainland to long, no to the suit and tie for travel. I really think the main idea would be for the team to dress as a team and if that is a requirement of the coach then the UHAD needs to foot the bill for the players.

  96. HawaiiMongoose December 29, 2011 9:35 am

Garret, re #46, if UTEP were going to split sports it would seem to me to make more sense to move basketball and the other Olympic sports to the western division of the alliance and keep Miner football in the eastern division. Travel time and distance is a bigger concern for Olympic sports than for football, and UTEP is much closer to the remaining MWC schools than the remaining CUSA schools (I was surprised to find out that the distance from El Paso to the Pacific Ocean is less than the distance from El Paso to Tulsa or Houston). Also by keeping football in the eastern division, UTEP could continue to play at least some conference games in its marquis sport in front of alumni and boosters in Texas and Oklahoma, and could continue to recruit those states and the southeast.

Of course if UTEP were to do this, the alliance would have to find a football-only member in the west to balance the football divisions at 9 teams each. I think SJSU would be a good candidate since it could place its Olympic sports in the Big West, which would probably welcome SJSU as a 12th member.

  97. papajoe2 December 29, 2011 9:36 am

Remember UH basketball player Gavin Smith? In the first day at the Aloha Classic, his hair was long and he used a head band. After some coaches criticized his “hippie look” he cut his hair for the next 2 games. He never got drafted. In those days, I think they had at least 7 rounds in the draft, maybe even 10.

  98. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2011 9:39 am

Tuck in the jerseys. That is all.

  99. Couch potato December 29, 2011 9:40 am

papajoe2, if he kept his hair long he would have been drafted? 😮

  100. al December 29, 2011 9:44 am

mcnamara should get off his duff a nd work a deal with the tommy bahama people.

(wanna stay local reyn’s or tori richards)

design a hawaii logo’d silk aloha shirt with coordinating silk slacks. include a blazer to wear at the colder climates. then, have under armour design a casual/dress shoe with matching socks.

    uh logo caps? nah.

    do it right.

    do it in style.

…after all these are exciting times.

  101. Couch potato December 29, 2011 9:44 am

    any rastafarians on the team?

    what no open practices?

what is this girl to do?

watch out tsai…someone will be hitting you up for a press pass.

  106. wafan December 29, 2011 9:47 am

2011 is winding down with an exciting finish. 2012 looks to be awesome!

  107. wafan December 29, 2011 9:50 am

Closed practices? Aside of the hillside, parking structure and dorms, that is. If they really want closed practices move them to the stadium and lock the North Endzone door.

  108. Couch potato December 29, 2011 9:51 am

    or build a field house.

  109. (Jesse) James December 29, 2011 9:53 am

al…nah. slugger will just continue honing her gardening skills. It’s DPK I’m worried about. He may have tree withdrawals… 🙁

  110. Kevin December 29, 2011 9:54 am

Reyn Spooner makes several of the aloha shirts currently worn and worn in the past by the UH coaching staffs of Rainbow Wahine and Warrior basketball and the volleyball programs.

At banquets and fundraiser functions for UH athletics UH staff and coaches usually wear these shirts as well.

Reyn Spooner and recently Tori Richard have made many designs for UH with the embroidered H logo on them over the past few years.

  111. al December 29, 2011 9:56 am

j/j…ah no worry about dpkl. get two trees on the sidewalk where he lives. he’ll be fine.

funny thing though those are two special kind trees i think cuz the leaves are always yellow.

  112. Kevin December 29, 2011 9:57 am

The Under Armour H polos and dress slacks and shoes are a nice combo. For anyone that’s attended the UH Rainbow Baseball Grand Slam event, the players are dressed up with UA UH polos tucked into their dress slacks and shoes.

  113. al December 29, 2011 9:58 am

    110…das why i mentioned them.

but, tommy’s would be a step up and the kids might really like to wear um as long as mcnamara isn’t the one who chooses the stuff.

  114. al December 29, 2011 9:59 am

well we all know why we never dressed uniformily right?

  115. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 10:00 am

I thought Gavin Smith didn’t get drafted because he had an aversion to passing.

  116. LizKauai (bonafide) December 29, 2011 10:01 am

#80… I like Samoan formal. Very classy.

#85… Na Koa Membership card??? Hmmm… I don’t think I have one of those. I’ll have to carry a clipping of the “member profile” in my pocket…

Anyway, all superficial changes aside, we’ll see if the 2012 Warriors can break the LizKauai curse. I hope to attend the opener at USC… and you know what happens when I attend an away game….

Maybe if I sit with the Trojans… 😆

  117. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 10:01 am

    Hmm.

People do realize this is a Warrior-related blog, right?

    I’m just sayin’.

  118. Old School Dave December 29, 2011 10:02 am

Three NFL coaches could be coming on as UH assistants. I would assume that they would be along the line of quality control level coaches (Seahawks Rocky Seto), which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, much like Mike Cavanaugh was with the Chargers before coming to UH.

  119. cheepono December 29, 2011 10:03 am

mike edwards’ shoulder surgery is done. wishin him a speedy recovery!

  120. Old School Dave December 29, 2011 10:06 am

Gavin Smith – UCLA transfer, right? Another former Bruin was Marvin Vitatoe. Victor Kelly was from USC, I think. Boyd Batts was another. UH BB has had a lot of notable and less notable transfers over the years. I once sat on a flight next to a Gonzaga BB assistant back in the 80s. I mentioned a certain USF transfer to UH after they dropped basketball and the assistant just rolled his eyes.

  121. Fashion Police December 29, 2011 10:06 am

    Oh give me a break!

  122. Kevin December 29, 2011 10:08 am

McNamara isn’t the one to choose designs, but he most likely will be the one to see the final product or sketch and approve them since the H logo is involved.

The UA deal, for example… The actual Under Armour rep assigned to Hawaii is the one making the call on ordering merchandise to be sold for fans (designs, etc..), the programs (football, softball, baseball, soccer, and partially wahine basketball) choose their stock for the staff and players.

UA can propose something or have something available for UH, but from what I understand, the UA UH rep is gonna make the call whether to order them or not. That’s I was led to believe.

  123. Kevin December 29, 2011 10:10 am

To clarify, the UA/UH rep isn’t someone from the mainland. Local individual put in charge of the orders between UH and UA for merchandise.

  124. Slugger December 29, 2011 10:10 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Speedy recovery to Mike Edwards.

Guess I’ll have to introduce myself to Coach Chow & see if I can get into practices.

The UA gear, similar to what Coach Chow & Lewis Walker are wearing, looks comfortable for traveling.

LizKauai, get in touch with the Na Koa office re: your membership card.

  125. LizKauai (bonafide) December 29, 2011 10:13 am

Healing energy to Mike Edwards and all wounded Warriors and alumni!

  129. al December 29, 2011 10:20 am

kevin…ah what the heck. kazz my brother…i bring up mcnamara’s name because i heard he nixed some of the greatest designs of collegiate uniforms in this century that ua came up with.

people who seen them after the fact, okay wait, little and big birdies who have seen those prototype uniforms that ua proposed say they were unbelievable and they alone could have recruited two holy grails by themselves.

you yourself would have bought a closet full of warrior jerseys.

  130. al December 29, 2011 10:22 am

    127…wow.

talk about taking furloughs seriously. thats one way to reduce the payroll.

and that is taking the leap year a bit to literally.

  131. kawika49 December 29, 2011 10:25 am

ipu man that is Western Samoa (time change). AmeriKa Samoa remains the same.

  132. AlaWai December 29, 2011 10:26 am

Bowwar: I like your suggestion of the Reyn’s Aloha Shirt. Reyn’s has produced a UH aloha shirt in the past. A uniform look by the team would go a long way in upgrading the image. A nice blazer for travel would also add class. Black slacks and shoes. (No white socks please!) The shirt can be marketed and would sell well. Dark shirt for home games and a light white shirt for away games. This look, is Hawaii’s suit and tie. It speaks volumes to local business guys who are the target for UH donations. Great for public appearances. I have been at lunches and dinners where the coaches and players are guests and they appear in T-shirts, shorts and slippers. While we are upgrading lets do it right!

  133. FattyMcButterpants December 29, 2011 10:27 am

I hated having a dress code back in college. Made me feel like we were on a grade school field trip. Like we should be singing that “2-4-6-8, who do we appreciate? Bus driver, bus driver! Yay bus driver!” thing upon arrival.

  134. Really December 29, 2011 10:29 am

Shaw, Aranda and Smith join Miano as non staff memebers. Good luck to you and thanks for your service and good luck to you in future endeavors

  135. LizKauai (bonafide) December 29, 2011 10:37 am

    Ok, Slugger.

So, ST, I like the designer logo trucks. Do the teams travel in designer logo buses? Perhaps Coach Chow will be able to influence the official carrier of the University of Hawaii Warrior Football Team to design a plane for them!

  136. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 10:44 am

“Fashion Police” is a pretty funny blog name.

  137. LizKauai (bonafide) December 29, 2011 10:45 am

And while we are all into the designer mood, how about some designer plays?

    And some designer wins?

    And designer schollies?

    And designer grads?

    And designer recruits?

after all, it is better to look good than to feel good, right?

  139. postmanke December 29, 2011 10:48 am

Nice that there’s discussion regarding travel attire policy. sad to think though thats theres discussion regarding travel attire policy. but it’s about time. so does that mean we wont be seeing any baggy hip-hop offhand wear on the sidelines during games as well?

    about time..

  140. Kevin December 29, 2011 10:52 am

Never liked our players being interviewed on TV wearing the hat of a pro NFL, NBA, or MLB team.

  141. Kevin December 29, 2011 10:55 am

At least we won’t be seeing Coach Chow sporting an NBA team hat while being interview on national tv after a win. 🙄 🙄 🙄

Going forward, UH should look into FINING coaches for not wearing appropriate UH-related apparel when being interviewed on TV in a game situation.

  142. da keed December 29, 2011 10:55 am

Hmmmm. Someone’s reporting from El Paso??? I’m guessing. Is there a casino nearby?

  143. bigislandkurt December 29, 2011 10:59 am

What if all the players got outfitted with Sig Zanes? haaaaaa.

I guess we are really hurting for some football news.

    BIK

  144. Really December 29, 2011 11:02 am

How about Khakis, with Tori Richard custom UH team shirt?

  145. koakane December 29, 2011 11:03 am

gangie let get real, not asking the players to make a fashion statement.

key here is casual ware that is comfortable and appropriate for the institution represented.

there is UA athletic apparel which meet this need.

  146. mikey December 29, 2011 11:10 am

#132 Alawai & Bowwar Yes! Bring on the Reyn’s Aloha Shirt.

Obama didn’t do us any favors’ by not wearing Reyn’s Aloha Shirt during APEC week. He could’ve at least promoted Hawaiian wear for the inconveniences he caused for our local business and traffic.

  147. papajoe2 December 29, 2011 11:11 am

I think if we signed a UA contract, then we have to wear UA geer. How would UA feel if we wore Nike sweat suits on the plane?

  148. mikey December 29, 2011 11:12 am

He’s here again but never have I seen him with an Aloha Shirt! Only shave ice.

  149. papajoe2 December 29, 2011 11:14 am

OK, back to football. If UH lifer, Rich Miano, was to work for another school to further his coaching resume, don’t you think that he would recruit Hawaii high school players? Wouldn’t the other former coaches do the same?

  150. mikey December 29, 2011 11:15 am

    catching up from yesterday’s blog:

#302 AlaWai – I agree whole heartedly Rolo will contribute and knows the offensive personnel better than anyone. I do hope he gets a chance to be a QB/WR coach. It will be a world to him able to learn from the Master of OC!

  151. mikey December 29, 2011 11:15 am

#248 Dennis The New alliance of Big 10- Pac 12 really is a belly punch for Warriors

Good thing Pac-12 schedule is set till 2015 with us. But will have harder time scheduling after 2016. Which is wide open for business? Bring on the SEC and ACC.

  152. Kevin December 29, 2011 11:15 am

    Papajoe2,

No way in hell we wear Nike. Coach Chow is on top of things. No worries.

  153. mikey December 29, 2011 11:16 am

    last one from yesterday:

#243 Derek I hear the UA shoes are terrible. My friend said he got some UA shoes from UH and when he put it on he didn’t like them. They don’t feel solid and doesn’t give the proper support.

Maybe that’s why Warriors underperformed ?

  154. mikey December 29, 2011 11:17 am

  155. SUPPORT RAINBOW WAHINE SOFTBALL December 29, 2011 11:22 am

Aloha! We are 41 days away from the start of the Rainbow Wahine Softball season!

Coach Coolen will debut his largest roster in recent memory of 24 players.

As fall practice started to take shape and concluded with the fall exhibition games, the primary starting lineup looked like:

    -Freshman Kayla Wartner – catcher

-Freshman Leisha Liilii – 1st base

-Sophomore Jazmine Zamora – 2nd base

-Senior Dara Pagaduan – 3rd base

    -Junior Jessica Iwata – shortstop

-Senior Alex Aguirre – left field

    -Junior Kelly Majam – center

-Sophomore Sharla Kliebenstein – right field

-Senior Sarah Robinson – designated player

The Na Wahine Softball Booster Club is proud to report that to date we have nearly half of our membership count in for 2012. We finished 2011 with the highest membership count in recent memory of around 80 members.

The generosity of our members helped fund sending the coaching staff to the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s National Convention which was a first for the coaching staff in nearly 5 years. We also help assist with the funding to send the Rainbow Wahine to Maui in November to scrimmage UH Hilo and host a softball clinic for the youth players on the Valley Isle!

Your membership fees and other donations will continue to support post game meals for the student-athletes throughout the season, as well as other incidentals or needed costs not covered by the annual budget.

Every little bit helps as the program continues to receive inquiries from some of the country’s most talented high school and travel ball players.

  156. Kevin December 29, 2011 11:24 am

So I guess in 2010 we were using different shoes/cleats?

  157. koakane December 29, 2011 11:25 am

papajoe2 #149 my answer most definately. the battle for 808 athletics will intensify especially if he can duplicate what he did with the walk on program. most schools would welcome to have solid athletics walk on, prove their worth and make the scholies look bad eventually taking it away and becoming a starter.

  158. koakane December 29, 2011 11:26 am

    opps athletics should be athletes

  159. AlaWai December 29, 2011 11:27 am

The image UH projects is important to its over all success on the field and off. If we hope to be invited by a AQ conference we need to project an image of total class professionalism. Winning consistently, playing aggressive hard-nosed, disciplined football and exhibiting sportsmanship makes UH a lot more attractive than the current impression. We cannot have a “take us as we are” attitude because we are campaigning to a national audience. Grant it, we give up some of our individuality, but if it gets us into a dance somewhere it will be worth it.

  160. koakane December 29, 2011 11:28 am

I think we will continue to have PAC 12 schools to play against. Don’t think it’s as bad as it may initially sound.

  167. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2011 11:59 am

Chow’s got a Phd. in Educational Psychology. Every thing he says in public, every rule he makes, every hire he makes is very deliberate and calculated towards giving the Warriors every advantage on the field. Gotta respect that.

Agree with Pomai’s #89. Nice sweats, shoes and a logo polo. Main thing they look tidy, uniform, ready to play and reinforce team unity/identity . Ultimately, its Coache’s call.

I wonder why the selection of the Uni designs falls to one person. Seems to me that a golden opportunity for fan and player involvement is being missed. Even if we aren’t given a say, it would be nice to at least see the choices and have an informal poll. It would serve to keep the Warriors at the front of the mind at the very least.

  168. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2011 12:02 pm

  183. krump1_AKA_protector December 29, 2011 12:51 pm

Agree with ‘tommui’ that the T-shirts on #162 look good. And that the phrase “chasing championships” is somewhat catchy. But hasn’t UH ALWAYS chased championships?? How about a shirt that says We will WIN championships or We will CLINCH championships? It may not be as poetic or catchy but I think it’s more accurate in terms of where we aspire to be

or what we hope to attain.

  184. mikey December 29, 2011 12:53 pm

#132 Ala Wai – THE WARRRIORS ARE HAWAII’s TEAM, so they have to “represent” and “market” our State. We may not dress in Suit and Ties, but a nice logo Aloha Shirt under a suit does wonders when a team is seen together. Maybe, the gov can get the Hawaii Tourism Bureau to assist with the marketing of the Warriors and Hawaii in tandem…

i guess some did not listen to the presser. Chow said the phrase on the shirt.

  192. d1shima December 29, 2011 1:28 pm

What’s in the design is quoting what the new Coach said in his initial presser, “We will chase championships.”

Geez…the guy hasn’t reported for work yet and folks are already editing his words, critiquing (sp?) his meanings and questioning his intentions.

The Chow Dynasty is undefeated! Support that!

    GO DYNASTY WARRIORS!

Is Lewis Walker on staff at Utah? GA? Just happened to be standing around when they needed a scout QB?

  199. d1shima December 29, 2011 1:54 pm

    CP,

UA get more “forgiving” styles, too now. 😉

There’s been no definitive word he’s out, but it’s highly, highly unlikely he’ll be back.

  202. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2011 1:58 pm

Walker transferred to be closer to his family. I think there was a serious family illness. He basically gave up a UH scholarship to be a walk-on at Utah.

  203. d1shima December 29, 2011 1:58 pm

    Aloha Tsaikos!

Tommui – you have me confused with Slugger. I don’t attend practice.

Can I put a plug in for the Warrior volleyball booster club? Being a member is one of the best ways to get to know the players, especially if you come to the potlucks (1x/mo during the season) or help provide a post-game meal. There are 4.5 scholarships spread among the team, so some of the players are juggling school, practice, team, and jobs. The players are most appreciative.

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!

I often wonder about scouting reports on high school graduates – the amount of stars could mean something in the scale of things. Yet a guy like Tom Brady never even got a nibble from any D1 schools. His father had to make a whole bunch of DVDs or tapes to send to various schools.

  238. Kaneohe Resident December 29, 2011 4:48 pm

I advocate no player interviews after practice, only the coaches. If players are interviewed, please have them put on shirts before the TV cameras. As for travel wear, I’m all for uniform team apparel. They are representatives of the University and not on personal travel.

Casual wear is good for home, for travel? Leave the shorts and slippers in the suitcase for hotel room wear. Seeing local people wear shorts and slippers going to LV is ridiculous! And what’s with camos? I remember when Wilton was HC for the men’s VB team and they would adopt the moniker “men of war”. Hell, the REAL men of war were the 25th ID, HANG, and the Army Reserve serving in the middle east at the time. Not playing a GAME! I think adopting unofficially the use of black in any part of the uniform is asinine! Black makes you stronger? Boise State with their affection for BLUE sure didn’t hurt their performance. If we need players who think wearing black will make them more intimidating, then I think we’ve recruited the wrong type of player. The school colors are GREEN and WHITE! And for me the school nickname will forever be the RAINBOWS.

GO BOWS! Remember…Rainbows have a real tradition with regards to football not some contrived marketing gimmick like Warriors. Remember Coach Klum’s legacy? Warriors belong to Kamehameha Schools.

    Well, people asked.

UH Rainbowtique will be selling Norm Chow shirts.

hmmm…. the phrasing and placement sounds FAMILIAR……

    On the front:

It’s CHOW TIME, with “CHOW TIME” in the thick UH tapa font and to the right of it, an image of Coach Chow in pensive thought….

    On the back:

It’s the new NORMal. with “norm” part also in the UH tapa font.

    Nice Utah Truck.

Several years ago Rainbowtique thought that it would be cost effective to have two trailers built to haul UH Rainbowtique merchandise: one here, one on the mainland. It didn’t work out. The trailers’ graphics were the type of wrapping that you see on some upscale merchants trucks.

I wonder where those trailers are now? Could they be repurposed to serve UH Athletics?

Rainowtique is part of the UH organization and it seems a prudent move to use resources, if available, for UH needs.

the subliminal message that is. somebody with the b***s needs to be tasked to reevaluate where the money flows and goes.

somehow, the athletic dept is being raped by their own sister. in particular the football program which is the cash cow. if all revenues and profits that are initiated by football be it gate, parking, concession, rainbowtique, and donations were to be funneled back in to the program we’d have a proud program because although we are far away from the big time we’d definitely be able to fund a respectable program, facilities, and salaries.

  300. whitey December 29, 2011 9:04 pm

it is amazing that rainbow boutique is handed a silver platter (Chow Time), don’t know what to do with it, then calls 6 geniuses to find out what to do, and still don’t know how to produce or market it. amazing!!!!!!!!

  301. whitey December 29, 2011 9:06 pm

I think the Don Weir’s “I will chase championship” shirt will be awesome with the mercurial vapor superfly soccer cleats. Need a large and a extra large.

Now that was some second half by the men’s basketball team tonight..final score 100 to 73.

The women need to learn how to play defense. How can you go down court with your back to the point guard, how can you back off on a 3point shooter, how can you pass cross court when you are offense because more often than not you will have your pass stolen or thrown away and that one drives me nuts

  309. cheepono December 29, 2011 10:57 pm

utah asked kiha sai to greyshirt so he decommitted. go get em norm!

  310. madeinhawaii December 29, 2011 11:06 pm

Wonder what Sai’s real reason was? I mean, could it be he wants to follow Chow? Hope so. Cheaper go gray shirt here, too.

  311. Slugger December 29, 2011 11:20 pm

WheeHa!!! MBB wins with 100 points! I think SC St. got 76… I don’t remember. Great game! Congrats, BasketBows!

  312. Slugger December 29, 2011 11:23 pm

SA article has the correct score: 100-73. Yay!

  313. madeinhawaii December 29, 2011 11:35 pm

UNLV comes to town on Saturday.. they just blew away their opponent (Central Arkansas) tonight 124-75… The boards at the Sheriff will be smoking on Saturday afternoon!

  318. madeinhawaii December 30, 2011 12:05 am

    Check that…

    I should have said..

    “Why the blank expression?” instead.

  319. papajoe2 December 30, 2011 12:25 am

In all my years of keeping track of sports, I can honestly say I’ve never heard of Florida Gulf Coast University until last night. They really took it to the Wahine. How can a team have numerous 3 point shots with nobody within 5 yards of the shooter? No wonder.

  320. da keed December 30, 2011 12:26 am

Wow. No coaches on staff yet.

Jake Heaps said to be interested in tranferring to Hawaii.

An OSU QB calls. Needs to redshirt one year, wiil get to play two.

Another OSU QB calls. Available immediately, one year to play.

Norm Chow tells, Jake Heaps thanks, but no thanks.

Jake Heaps lands in Lawerence, Kansas on Wednesday ready to play for a BIG guy.

Man that’s exciting drama, and head coach hasn’t started yet.

Dramatic, because neither OSU QB’s are registered at Hawaii yet, and Coach Chow tells Heaps to take a hike.

  321. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 30, 2011 12:40 am

Three blowouts at The Stan yesterday – fortunately, only one of them bashed UH while UH was the basher in the third game.

Next week is the start of the men’s volleyball season, but before that we need your okoles in the seats by 3 pm on Saturday, December 31, 2011, for the men’s basketball game v UNLV. By 3:01 stay standing and yelling for the next two hours – although you can sit down for 15 minutes during the half.

For those of you who are interested in greeting the New Year in a very special way on Sunday morning, check out my post later today for details. We’ll be hiking up Makapu`u to greet the rising sun and to raise our glasses with non-alcoholic bubbly before heading back down the trail and going over to The Shack in Hawaii Kai for breakfast and NFL football – our treat.

Here are the 8 am games – wiill call tomorrow to see which ones will be shown here in Hawai`i:

New York Jets at Miami Dolphins, (CBS)

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots, (CBS)

San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams, (FOX)

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints, (FOX)

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings, (FOX)

Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers, (FOX)

Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles, (FOX)

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars, (CBS)

Have to spend a couple of hours at work later today so it’s time to go to beddy-bye.

  322. al December 30, 2011 1:08 am

da keed…technically can’t officially hire any staffers because the hro and admin offices are all on furlough. this was not a joke, its reality.

although, unofficially two are in. rauscher and powell.

any transfers are not yet in. not until they apply for enrollment and are accepted. although they are exceptional students. not counting the jc transfers who may have suffered a different fate.

it will all start unfolding by tuesday or wednesday.
